- 0:01The terms Divine Grace along with cosmic law and divine
- 0:06compassion are transcriptions into human terms from our human
- 0:11viewpoint of actions and events that take place from an entirely
- 0:15different level of the divine manifestation and with a
- 0:19viewpoint that far exceeds that of our limited human
- 0:22understanding. For example, we tend to look at
- 0:26the world of some kind of machinery that operates under
- 0:29specific strict rules that we treat as inflexible rules
- 0:34governed by an all powerful, all knowing ruler.
- 0:38We then go about trying to understand and define those
- 0:42rules and come up with things such as the speed of light, the
- 0:46gravitational constant, the mathematical relationships that
- 0:50lead to the structures we observe on the level of the life
- 0:55energy. We describe the law of cause and
- 0:57effect as the law of karma because we view these things as
- 1:03a form of machinery we do not generally expect nor understand.
- 1:08When things occur that vary from our preconceived notion of how
- 1:12the law works, we then try to find explanations, facts, or a
- 1:18new more refined understanding of the law involved in order to
- 1:23justify to ourselves that the machinery is still in operation
- 1:27as it should be. At a certain point in our
- 1:30psychological make up, we find it difficult to accept that we
- 1:35are alive in a fixed mechanical world that has no way to adapt
- 1:39to circumstances. We thus bring in the question of
- 1:43divine compassion, responding to prayer, thus providing a way for
- 1:48us to petition the Supreme Ruler for intercession and remitting
- 1:52of the Cosmic Law. In a specific instance, we may
- 1:57not actually recognize that prayer and response to prayer
- 2:01may actually be part of the evolutionary process of a
- 2:04conscious being manifesting the universe.
- 2:09And then we come to the concept of Divine grace.
- 2:12This is the most inexplicable of all the variations from our view
- 2:16of Cosmic law. In as much as it seems to defy
- 2:21any rational understanding, it seems to shower down on unlikely
- 2:26recipients at unlikely times and under unlikely circumstances.
- 2:33The issue here is that as we try to appreciate these things from
- 2:37the human standpoint, we are unable to see, understand,
- 2:42appreciate or even recognize that these things occur from the
- 2:47divine standpoint. We do not see the struggles, the
- 2:51past lifetimes, the karmic sequences, the need of the
- 2:55evolutionary developments taking place when we try to judge these
- 3:00things from our limited understanding.
- 3:03We also do not see the cosmic intelligence, the personal
- 3:08aspect of the divine, at work in and through the mechanisms we
- 3:13observe, Sri Orobindo writes. Quote.
- 3:19I should like to say something about the divine Grace, for you
- 3:23seem to think it should be something like a divine reason
- 3:26acting upon lines not very different from those of human
- 3:29intelligence. But it is not that.
- 3:33Also it is not a universal divine compassion either, acting
- 3:37impartially on all who approach it, and exceeding to all
- 3:41prayers. It does not select the righteous
- 3:44and reject the Sinner. The divine grace came to aid the
- 3:48persecutor Saul of Tarsus. It came to Saint Augustine the
- 3:53profligate, to Jagai and Madai of infamous fame, to Bill 1,
- 3:58Mongol, and many others whose conversion might well scandalize
- 4:04the puritanism of the human moral intelligence.
- 4:09But it can come to the righteous also, curing them of their self
- 4:14righteousness and leading to a pure consciousness beyond these
- 4:19things. It is a power that is superior
- 4:23to any rule, even to the cosmic law.
- 4:27For all spiritual seers have distinguished between the law
- 4:31and grace. Yet it is not indiscriminate
- 4:35only. It has a discrimination of its
- 4:37own, which sees things and persons and the right times and
- 4:41seasons with another vision than that of the mind or any other
- 4:45normal power. A state of grace is prepared in
- 4:49the individual, often behind thick veils, by means not
- 4:53calculable by the mind, and when the state of grace comes, then
- 4:59the grace itself acts. There are these 3.
- 5:04Powers 1. The cosmic law of Karma, or what
- 5:09else? 2 The Divine Compassion acting
- 5:13on as many as it can reach through the Nets of the law, and
- 5:17giving them their chance. 3 The Divine Grace, which acts more
- 5:23incalculably, but also more irresistibly than the others.
- 5:28The only question is whether there is something behind all
- 5:31the anomalies of life which can respond to the call and open
- 5:35itself with whatever difficulty till it is ready for the
- 5:39illumination of the Divine Grace.
- 5:43And that's something must be not a mental and vital movement, but
- 5:48an inner somewhat, which can well be seen by the inner eye if
- 5:53it is there. And when it becomes active in
- 5:56front, then the compassion can act, though the full action of
- 6:01the Grace may still wait, attending the decisive decision
- 6:05or change. For this may be postponed to a
- 6:08future hour, because some portion or element of the being
- 6:14may still come between something that is not yet ready to
- 6:18receive. End Quote.
