- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to press Play, where we're going through the less
- 0:02Speaker 1: than stellar history of video game movies. I'm Drew Shulman
- 0:05Speaker 1: with me is my beef cheek bro Jason Twin. Now,
- 0:08Speaker 1: whether you're watching or playing, it's time to press play.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Oh wow, welcome back. Hopefully people heard the first one
- 0:24Speaker 1: and went like, yeah, I can put up with this
- 0:25Speaker 1: and listen to it again.
- 0:27Speaker 2: That's exact reaction that we want, no more, no less.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Exactly. We don't want fan mail. We don't want like
- 0:33Speaker 1: five star reviews. We want like a three and a
- 0:34Speaker 1: half star review. It's like, yeah, I mean like I'm
- 0:37Speaker 1: not gonna not listen to the episode, but like whatever,
- 0:39Speaker 1: it fills the time.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yea background with the background noise to your chores.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Oh have you kate question for you just podcast stuff? Quickly?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Do you listen to podcasts while trying to fall asleep?
- 0:52Speaker 1: It's yes and no.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Okay, I'll listen to YouTube videos I've listened to before,
- 0:59Speaker 2: and it's some times to go to sleep. Sometimes it's
- 1:02Speaker 2: it's half the time, like when I'm having trouble sleeping
- 1:06Speaker 2: and stuff like that.
- 1:06Speaker 1: No, I get that, I've just I've heard like both
- 1:09Speaker 1: I listened to shows where like it comes up in
- 1:11Speaker 1: like fan letters and like I've heard people saying about
- 1:13Speaker 1: things I've worked on where it's like, oh, like I
- 1:15Speaker 1: fallen asleep listening to this before, and it's like yeah.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Sometimes it's like oh, like Once in a Blue Moon
- 1:20Speaker 1: fun and then I'm like, oh, no, I hear this repeated,
- 1:21Speaker 1: Like are people like putting on podcasts before bed and
- 1:24Speaker 1: like falling asleep mid episode?
- 1:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I totally understand it, because again it's ancient noise.
- 1:28Speaker 2: But I can't do it for something I've not listened
- 1:31Speaker 2: to before, because then my brain is actually trying to
- 1:33Speaker 2: listen to what's going on versus if it's a thing
- 1:35Speaker 2: I've listened to on repeat, then it's like brain shut down.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Personal stories. But I've been having trouble sleeping recently, so
- 1:41Speaker 1: a lot of it has been catching up on like
- 1:42Speaker 1: old YouTube series that I'm like, I know well enough
- 1:44Speaker 1: that I can just listen to and fall asleep to. Yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 1: But I've also done the thing where I've like put
- 1:48Speaker 1: on a podcast, especially on a plane, because I I you,
- 1:52Speaker 1: funny fact about Drew, I fall asleep super fast when
- 1:56Speaker 1: I'm a passenger plane. Both car doesn't matter if I'm
- 2:00Speaker 1: in a moving vehicle and I don't have to actually
- 2:02Speaker 1: the one paying attention to the vehicles movements. I have
- 2:06Speaker 1: literally fallen asleep from the time the like captains like, oh,
- 2:10Speaker 1: we're we're gonna our descentment whatever townt now, so like
- 2:13Speaker 1: you know, buckle your seat and make sure your seat
- 2:15Speaker 1: back is up right, and I'm like, oh, we're like
- 2:17Speaker 1: literally in the act of landing. Sleep, wake up, We're
- 2:19Speaker 1: on the ground, Like I slipt through the landing.
- 2:23Speaker 2: People want to be you, Drew, I'll tell you that.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Oh yeah, no, I feel like I've heard jokes before,
- 2:28Speaker 1: but like my ability to fall asleep in like weird
- 2:30Speaker 1: positions and like suddenly probably a medical problem, but damn
- 2:34Speaker 1: is it good.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I fell asleep on a dude once on a problem.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I was like, I was like fifteen, and I was
- 2:39Speaker 2: drooling all over his big belly.
- 2:41Speaker 1: It was awful. There. There was a tradition for a
- 2:44Speaker 1: while when I was in college, the gamer Club I
- 2:47Speaker 1: hung out and all the time between classes or when
- 2:49Speaker 1: I skipped classes for a lot of the time because
- 2:51Speaker 1: I dropped out. Eventually, there was a really cozy couch,
- 2:54Speaker 1: but it was a little too small to sleep on,
- 2:56Speaker 1: but if you were sitting on it with somebody and
- 2:58Speaker 1: you could lean on them. It was like and it
- 3:01Speaker 1: became like a rite of passage to nap on, Drew,
- 3:03Speaker 1: And it was like, I like this, I don't mind,
- 3:06Speaker 1: I feel useful. I'm embracing my inner tutto.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah you I mean you touch is like I gotta
- 3:12Speaker 2: know you before you touch me. So good, Onya, because
- 3:18Speaker 2: I'm sure a lot of people appreciated it.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Whereas I was at a concert a week or two
- 3:22Speaker 1: ago and I literally there is a dude in a
- 3:24Speaker 1: like a red panda onesie, like just like we ended
- 3:26Speaker 1: up chatting for a bit and enduring one of the songs.
- 3:29Speaker 1: There's like a bit of like a weird moment where
- 3:30Speaker 1: it turns to like a slow song and we just
- 3:32Speaker 1: locked eyes for a split second and we're like ballroom
- 3:35Speaker 1: dance go. Social anxiety is afraid of you, Drew. And
- 3:41Speaker 1: the worst part is I am mostly an introvert.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah for sure, No, I totally get that. But you're
- 3:46Speaker 2: not socially anxious, I'll say that.
- 3:49Speaker 1: No.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Uh.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I've also been trying. I feel like I've like done
- 3:51Speaker 1: two more stories that I meant to do here in
- 3:53Speaker 1: an attempt to find a segue to the movie recap,
- 3:56Speaker 1: and I can't find one, So I'm just gonna say
- 3:58Speaker 1: time for the recap of the movie.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I'm totally for that for sure.
- 4:03Speaker 1: So going into this, before I even do the recap,
- 4:05Speaker 1: I was gonna ask, are you familiar with the movie
- 4:08Speaker 1: or the games before this anything?
- 4:11Speaker 2: No? Absolutely not. Never heard of it in my life.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Cool, so I had, like you movie, Like, I don't
- 4:18Speaker 1: even think I knew it existed till we started planning
- 4:21Speaker 1: this project. Yeah, the games definitely in the years of
- 4:24Speaker 1: like owning an nes, especially with the knockoff ones that
- 4:27Speaker 1: came with a bunch of preloaded games on it kind
- 4:29Speaker 1: of thing. Mm hmm. I like must have booted it
- 4:31Speaker 1: up and like hit the first few enemies. I can't
- 4:34Speaker 1: say I ever beat a level or even like I
- 4:36Speaker 1: literally there was a point where I was looking up
- 4:38Speaker 1: the game and it occurred to me the only way
- 4:41Speaker 1: to play the original game two player is through a
- 4:43Speaker 1: mod I was reading through it. I'm like, how does
- 4:46Speaker 1: that make sense? This is isn't this two players? Like
- 4:47Speaker 1: what happens if you're doing two players and it's like, oh,
- 4:49Speaker 1: this is a two player mode, it's a modification, Like
- 4:51Speaker 1: third party hack. Anyways, the movie stars two brothers who
- 4:56Speaker 1: have half a powerful ancient Chinese talisman that an evil
- 5:00Speaker 1: gang leader has the other half of and is determined
- 5:03Speaker 1: to get the brother's half and have a complete medallion
- 5:05Speaker 1: so he can gain absolute power. That's the recap of
- 5:09Speaker 1: the movie. That is literally like the like Wikipedia is like,
- 5:12Speaker 1: here's everything you need to know and genuinely pretty good job.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's definitely the main points of the movie.
- 5:18Speaker 2: We're gonna get into some of the things that get
- 5:20Speaker 2: that start happening, for sure, because there's a lot to
- 5:23Speaker 2: talk about. More oh more than I was expecting, that's
- 5:26Speaker 2: for sure. But yeah, it kind of lends itself, I
- 5:31Speaker 2: think because it's unknown.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I think this movie.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Ooh, I don't know if I want to say this
- 5:36Speaker 2: just yet, but I think this movie has a bit
- 5:38Speaker 2: more freedom to not adhere to anything and makes it
- 5:43Speaker 2: a better product in the previous movie that we talked about.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Very thank you're right. I think you're onto something, and
- 5:49Speaker 1: I think we'll explore this going not even just today's movie,
- 5:52Speaker 1: but going through some of the other movies we're gonna hit. Yeah,
- 5:54Speaker 1: is so again, I went into this, like I said,
- 5:57Speaker 1: movie with virtually no knowledge of the so I assumed
- 6:01Speaker 1: some things from the movie were pulled from the game,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and as we'll get to totally arc.
- 6:06Speaker 2: For sure not And actually I could talk about the
- 6:09Speaker 2: games here because I did a bit of research. Just
- 6:11Speaker 2: please so to recap the video game series for people
- 6:14Speaker 2: who are like us and going like, who what is this?
- 6:17Speaker 2: Double Dragon was a ArKade beat him up video game
- 6:20Speaker 2: released in nineteen eighty seven, Thanks Drue.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I was like, Clo, I figured it was easy to
- 6:28Speaker 1: cut while you were talking. We wouldn't wry attention to it.
- 6:30Speaker 1: But I was like, now I want to have a
- 6:34Speaker 1: nice beer. I listen to your explanations.
- 6:36Speaker 2: You're like, I'm already tuned the hell out. Developed by
- 6:41Speaker 2: Techno Japan, players took control of martial artists twin Brothers
- 6:45Speaker 2: Billy and Jimmy Lee, and the latest one actually came
- 6:49Speaker 2: out last year Double Dragon revived, so it's still active
- 6:52Speaker 2: to this day, which is shocking to me. But it
- 6:55Speaker 2: shouldn't be that shocking because what I actually found out
- 6:57Speaker 2: is that Double Dragon video games are more more or
- 7:00Speaker 2: less attributed for the golden age of beat them ups.
- 7:04Speaker 2: So if you like like Streets of Rage, Castle crashers,
- 7:09Speaker 2: any good teenage mutant ninjaternal game you have double Dragon.
- 7:14Speaker 2: To think, some of the features that they introduced were
- 7:17Speaker 2: the side scrolling bit because before it would just be
- 7:19Speaker 2: arenas that you would pop in and out of picking
- 7:21Speaker 2: up bad guys's weapons, and more importantly, co op, so
- 7:25Speaker 2: really interesting that the co op portion of the video
- 7:27Speaker 2: game you play it had to be like through a
- 7:29Speaker 2: mod and stuff like that. But that was like the
- 7:30Speaker 2: big stuff that they introduced that became staples. So it's
- 7:34Speaker 2: it's kind of really really cool. Also side note, this
- 7:37Speaker 2: is our second episode of press play. Also the second
- 7:40Speaker 2: game series that the Beef Cheek Bros Have reviewed about Brothers,
- 7:44Speaker 2: so that it's like a president's like, like, is it
- 7:47Speaker 2: only about brother video games?
- 7:49Speaker 1: From me?
- 7:49Speaker 2: Are now?
- 7:49Speaker 4: Is it?
- 7:49Speaker 2: Devil May Cry is uncharted for specifically Super Smash Bros.
- 7:54Speaker 1: You know, I just thought that was when they make
- 7:59Speaker 1: a Smash Bros. Movie, I will be there.
- 8:02Speaker 2: It's just in goingr nonsense, masterhand is there.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I mean even the games like attempted a story in
- 8:08Speaker 1: the more recent ones was like, Okay, I see what
- 8:11Speaker 1: you're trying, Sacher, good on you cool.
- 8:14Speaker 2: So that definitely tells me that it's gonna be in
- 8:16Speaker 2: this list of not great video game movies.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Doing a bit of reading as well. In the game
- 8:22Speaker 1: how like it really was the first side scroll beat
- 8:25Speaker 1: them up and like you mentioned some great games like
- 8:27Speaker 1: I love Castle Crashers. Those are my favorite games. I
- 8:30Speaker 1: still play it. I need to replay it at some point, Seminal.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I think another one they bring up to like a
- 8:35Speaker 1: classic back in the day was Gauntlet Legends or Gauntlet
- 8:38Speaker 1: like some of the best games out there. Interesting, still
- 8:41Speaker 1: love those ones.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I've definitely played a couple. I've just never It's really
- 8:44Speaker 2: fascinating that Double Dragon just never came up for me.
- 8:48Speaker 2: It released on multiple consoles I used to I don't
- 8:50Speaker 2: know if this is like a video game experience that
- 8:52Speaker 2: other people have. They'll often have like the retro video
- 8:55Speaker 2: games as part of like the newer consoles that have
- 8:57Speaker 2: been coming through. So I've played the original cast Slovenia
- 9:00Speaker 2: and stuff like that. I've never personally seen Double Dragon
- 9:04Speaker 2: out or I've heard of Streets of Rage, yeah part
- 9:07Speaker 2: of it. Never played it, but yeah, I just find
- 9:09Speaker 2: it interesting that this is attributed to being like the
- 9:13Speaker 2: one that started at all more or less.
- 9:14Speaker 1: But I've just never heard of it. It reminds me
- 9:17Speaker 1: vaguely of to pull a really weird example. So if
- 9:19Speaker 1: I say Xerox, the thing that comes to mind for
- 9:21Speaker 1: I assume most people, especially if you've work in an office,
- 9:23Speaker 1: is like printers and fax machines. Yeah, but like Xerox
- 9:27Speaker 1: invented what we now know as the mouse for your computer.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Huh.
- 9:32Speaker 1: They created it, they made it a thing, and then
- 9:34Speaker 1: we're kind of like, whatever, it's a thing, and then
- 9:35Speaker 1: other companies ran with it and made it like a
- 9:38Speaker 1: you know, integral part of computers. Yeah. So it kind
- 9:40Speaker 1: of feels like Double Dragon like invented this amazing format.
- 9:43Speaker 1: It's like this great style of play and was kind
- 9:45Speaker 1: of just like we did it, and then everyone else
- 9:48Speaker 1: like excelled and made better games using their foundation.
- 9:52Speaker 2: It's so double Dragon is the hydrox and everything else
- 9:56Speaker 2: is the oreo.
- 9:57Speaker 1: That's what a better example than your which I'm so.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Bad because I was like, I know what xerox is
- 10:03Speaker 2: as a twenty eight year old, I.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Was gonna say, I'm like, I feel like you've had
- 10:07Speaker 1: a boring office job enough at some point to know
- 10:09Speaker 1: what a xerox is. I've heard the word.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I had to ask my office the other day, how
- 10:14Speaker 2: do you fact something?
- 10:16Speaker 1: Oh my god, I hate when companies still do that
- 10:18Speaker 1: bullshit with like just email things, just.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Like send digital Yeah, emailing a PDF is the exact
- 10:25Speaker 2: same thing.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Oh my god. Yeah. And then like the weird time,
- 10:27Speaker 1: we're like, can I send you a fact without a
- 10:29Speaker 1: fax machine, like just through a digital service, and it's
- 10:31Speaker 1: like it's like the number of hoops to jump through.
- 10:34Speaker 1: It's like it's not worth it anymore. It's probably easier
- 10:36Speaker 1: to go like dig up a fax machine from like
- 10:39Speaker 1: a gutter and then hook it up. I love. So
- 10:44Speaker 1: before we get into our thoughts on the film and everything,
- 10:47Speaker 1: I do want to bring up like the fact that
- 10:49Speaker 1: basically the only thing from the games that made it
- 10:52Speaker 1: to the movie are the protagonist names yep, the villain's
- 10:57Speaker 1: name and the girlfriend's name. Oh Marion, yeah yeah, yeah yeah,
- 11:01Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure. But also Alyssa Milano, what a pleasant surprise?
- 11:05Speaker 1: Adore her.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I literally have a note that says, is that Melissa
- 11:08Speaker 2: Milano in a platinum pixie cut?
- 11:11Speaker 1: Because it's awesome? Oh yeah that like if she pulled
- 11:13Speaker 1: off that look like today in a movie, that would
- 11:15Speaker 1: be like it would break the Internet, dude. I genuinely
- 11:19Speaker 1: going into this that was like, like all this plot
- 11:21Speaker 1: about like an earthquake that ruined California and we're like
- 11:25Speaker 1: some sort of weird future apocalypse of two thousand and seven. Yeah,
- 11:30Speaker 1: No Angelus New Angelis. That's what it was. Like. There's
- 11:33Speaker 1: a weird like new because I didn't even say Old
- 11:34Speaker 1: York at some point for first to New York.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Skipping ahead a bit, I find that this movie has
- 11:39Speaker 2: something again similar to the Super Mario Bros.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Movie.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I'm gonna dub it nineties futuristic grunge is what I'm
- 11:47Speaker 2: gonna dub it, Yes, Because in the in the Mario movie,
- 11:50Speaker 2: they were like, oh, we've got Koopa's too, and we've
- 11:52Speaker 2: got we've got Yoshi's, and we've got Goomba's and all
- 11:55Speaker 2: this other stuff. Right, But like in the game itself,
- 11:58Speaker 2: you're just kind of going through the streets speat up
- 12:00Speaker 2: random thugs and so and so forth. They kind of
- 12:03Speaker 2: adhere to it. Well when they do nineties futuristic runge again,
- 12:06Speaker 2: I don't know if there's an actual term for it.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I kind of dig it.
- 12:09Speaker 2: I kind of it's it's kind of like the village people.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Like the people, not in a million years without what
- 12:17Speaker 1: I expect you we're gonna.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Say at some point in the movie, we'll get we'll
- 12:21Speaker 2: get more into that. It fits because there's such nothingness
- 12:27Speaker 2: to this world to begin with that I dig it.
- 12:30Speaker 2: And I don't know, maybe it's because we've been bogged
- 12:32Speaker 2: down by CGI nonsense and the same movie over and
- 12:35Speaker 2: over again. I find it charming a bit. I don't
- 12:38Speaker 2: find this movie as charming as the Mario Bros.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Movie.
- 12:41Speaker 2: In certain parts it's it's really weird.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Okay, I agree. I definitely feel like there's I think
- 12:46Speaker 1: coming off of Mario, especially like this feels like you
- 12:50Speaker 1: can see the lines of like, oh, like I guess,
- 12:53Speaker 1: did I don't know if up did Mario do well
- 12:55Speaker 1: enough that when they made this movie they're like, hmmm,
- 12:58Speaker 1: this like grunge future thing is definitely the way to
- 13:00Speaker 1: go with video geries, Like did anyone like watch Mario Well?
- 13:05Speaker 1: I guess maybe they saw like early printings before it
- 13:07Speaker 1: it was like publicly like received, so they had like
- 13:09Speaker 1: a something to I don't know who I'm making bullshit
- 13:12Speaker 1: up here, but like yeah, it really feels like there
- 13:14Speaker 1: was some sort of like linear path between the aesthetics
- 13:17Speaker 1: they attributed to like Dinohhattan and you know, the New
- 13:21Speaker 1: Los Angeles.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I totally agree. I think it's also and
- 13:25Speaker 2: I had this in my notes, this movie has a
- 13:26Speaker 2: bit of teenage Muan Ninja Turtles in it as well.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I don't remember when that release, that first Teenageman Ninja
- 13:33Speaker 2: Turtles movie. I feel like it was in the early nineties.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Similar to this, there's this similar level of grunge that
- 13:39Speaker 2: goes into it. The movie opens in a very teenage
- 13:42Speaker 2: Muan Ninja Turtles way, where it's like there's this karate
- 13:45Speaker 2: tournament that's underground being spectated and performed by just angsty,
- 13:51Speaker 2: unruly teens, and I kind of fucking dig that, Like
- 13:54Speaker 2: there's something really charming about this society run by teens
- 13:58Speaker 2: that I really dig. But there's this I describe nineties
- 14:03Speaker 2: futuristic runge as pull some sci fi greebley tech from
- 14:08Speaker 2: RoboCop and like Back to the Future too, but then
- 14:12Speaker 2: make it look like it was what Hollywood thought New
- 14:16Speaker 2: York looked like in the eighties. There's just newspapers flying
- 14:19Speaker 2: everywhere and trash fire like trash can fires. That's my
- 14:24Speaker 2: description of it, and for some reason people were obsessed
- 14:27Speaker 2: with the aesthetic.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I dig it. Yeah, Sow Turtles was the nineties. It was,
- 14:32Speaker 1: actually it was. It was nineteen ninety on the dot.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Oh so maybe this movie was inspired by that more
- 14:37Speaker 2: than the Mario Brothers movie.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's like interesting that there was this weird,
- 14:41Speaker 1: like early nineties like vision of what like eighth and
- 14:45Speaker 1: it still kills me to watch movies where like the
- 14:47Speaker 1: far flung future was like so long ago for us. Yeah,
- 14:51Speaker 1: Like I remember seeing like like twenty and seven and
- 14:54Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my god, this is them thinking of
- 14:56Speaker 1: the future. Oh my god, it's our past.
- 15:00Speaker 2: I was in the bionicle still back then. Hey, my
- 15:03Speaker 2: bionicles are still on that shelf. Really big note about
- 15:07Speaker 2: the movie going into it. The brothers are played by
- 15:11Speaker 2: Scott wolf Is I believe Billy Lee. Jimmy Lee is
- 15:14Speaker 2: the dude from Iron Chef, which was Yeah, he's he's
- 15:18Speaker 2: a He's a Hawaiian actor from Iron Chef. You might
- 15:21Speaker 2: know him as a guy who yells a La cuisine.
- 15:23Speaker 2: He's also the bad guy in John Wick three. I
- 15:26Speaker 2: think that's awesome really Yeah, yeah, he's like the sushi
- 15:30Speaker 2: chef bad guy in John Wick three.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Huh. I also feel like when I looked up the
- 15:36Speaker 1: villain for this movie, whose name I'm marty forgetting.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Robert Sorry, yeah, Robert Patrick is the actor's name.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Isn't he also in John Wick?
- 15:46Speaker 2: I don't know if he's in John Wick. He's the
- 15:48Speaker 2: T one thousand in Terminator two? Yes, which is also
- 15:51Speaker 2: like what a crazy poll? He's He's quite good in this.
- 15:55Speaker 2: He's actually quite awesome as his campy villain. He's also
- 15:58Speaker 2: Peacemaker's dad. For those people who like that, Rob Patrick
- 16:01Speaker 2: absolute awesome guy. You have a note here, what the
- 16:05Speaker 2: fuck is that dude's hair?
- 16:07Speaker 1: It's like one of those things where it's like the
- 16:10Speaker 1: most bizarre ass haircut and like color, and like, I
- 16:13Speaker 1: think it's amazing, but it's so fucking like a weird poll.
- 16:17Speaker 2: I was gonna say it's awesome too, because what it is,
- 16:19Speaker 2: it's like a reverse gray temples is what they've done
- 16:22Speaker 2: for his hair and then added like a goatee to it.
- 16:25Speaker 2: He's just awesome. He's just eating up every scene that
- 16:27Speaker 2: he's in. I really do love him. The acting in
- 16:31Speaker 2: this is atrocious. It's so bad. The only good moment
- 16:35Speaker 2: other than Robert Patrick is the brothers have this moment
- 16:37Speaker 2: where they like talking to each other before the third act.
- 16:41Speaker 2: It's okay, it's it's decent, but god, this movie. I
- 16:44Speaker 2: have such an interesting qualm with this movie where I think,
- 16:48Speaker 2: in parts it's charming. It's a lot funnier than the
- 16:51Speaker 2: Mario movie was. Yeah, it like it knows it's making jokes,
- 16:55Speaker 2: and there's obviously like at one point the news channel
- 16:58Speaker 2: of this universe is channel sixty nine. Yes, so maybe yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 2: they know right, they know they're making fun of themselves,
- 17:06Speaker 2: but the jokes aren't funny. No, when they make one liners,
- 17:11Speaker 2: and there's a couple of like directional things that happen
- 17:14Speaker 2: that I just don't think lands as much as it
- 17:17Speaker 2: could have to make this honestly like a pretty decent movie.
- 17:21Speaker 1: I definitely agree. I think there's like a like a
- 17:23Speaker 1: modern sensibility level of like, ooh, like this movie like
- 17:26Speaker 1: didn't eight Like Like again, the Mario movie coming out
- 17:29Speaker 1: today I think could garner some cult following. This movie
- 17:32Speaker 1: coming out today. I don't think would hit the same mark. No,
- 17:37Speaker 1: but I could definitely see this being like if like so,
- 17:40Speaker 1: my father had this weird habit of like going to
- 17:42Speaker 1: pick up movies for us, like and I realized that
- 17:45Speaker 1: now it must have been like the VHS dollar bin
- 17:47Speaker 1: at some place. So I had a collection of like
- 17:50Speaker 1: VHS movies growing up that were like not Disney animated films,
- 17:53Speaker 1: but like could be mistaken for Disney animated films. And
- 17:57Speaker 1: I feel like, if you were the kind of kid
- 18:00Speaker 1: who grew up with like the not mainstream movies, like
- 18:02Speaker 1: instead of getting the Karate Cad, you got this, I
- 18:05Speaker 1: can see this becoming your favorite movie.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, I could. Yeah. There's some moments where
- 18:11Speaker 2: the brothers are having moments. There's like there's this crazy
- 18:15Speaker 2: monster in it that's just horrifying, but also kind of
- 18:20Speaker 2: like his character is kind of funny and endearing. It's
- 18:24Speaker 2: very bright and colorful. And there are these moments where
- 18:29Speaker 2: there's like action scenes. There's like a set piece where
- 18:31Speaker 2: it's like, Okay, this is the jet ski chase. This
- 18:34Speaker 2: is the one where Yeah, it's awesome.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I love a jet ski chase on like a lake
- 18:42Speaker 1: that you can see the other side of, so it's
- 18:44Speaker 1: like really like you can throw a rock across this
- 18:46Speaker 1: lake and hit one of these kids.
- 18:48Speaker 2: They were just going in circles. That's all that's happening.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Oh god.
- 18:53Speaker 2: There are set pieces that I could be like, oh yeah,
- 18:55Speaker 2: like I've seen that, or that's like a solid set piece.
- 18:57Speaker 2: But I think the thing that makes it not watch
- 19:01Speaker 2: is the direction of it. So there's like this one
- 19:04Speaker 2: kung fu scene in the middle of the movie where
- 19:06Speaker 2: the bad guys infiltrate their base and there's some parkoring,
- 19:10Speaker 2: there's some kung fu that happens, and so and so forth,
- 19:13Speaker 2: but everything's just so slow. Everything's so telegraphed, it's not quick.
- 19:18Speaker 2: There's a lot of face shot reactions in this movie
- 19:21Speaker 2: as well that are cheesy to so it just goes
- 19:24Speaker 2: up and down, up and down to like ultra cheesy
- 19:27Speaker 2: one liners, reaction shots, but then also slow fight scenes
- 19:31Speaker 2: and uninteresting wackiness. It's just it's all over the place.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I think it's a serviceable TV movie, Yeah, you know, serviceable.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Yeah, like I think you're I think the the issue
- 19:44Speaker 1: is they didn't know which way to go if they
- 19:45Speaker 1: wanted this to be like decent choreo or just like slapstick. Yeah,
- 19:50Speaker 1: And I think the emblematic thing is how slapstick the
- 19:55Speaker 1: ending of the movie is, how like it's like a
- 19:59Speaker 1: pretty decent fight scene, like the final battle like ahead
- 20:02Speaker 1: of a lot of other things we want to talk about,
- 20:04Speaker 1: but like the final battle is like a surprisingly decent
- 20:07Speaker 1: final battle with like a cool conclusion and then just
- 20:11Speaker 1: like slapstick comedy to save the Day. Like, yeah, it
- 20:15Speaker 1: really takes a total shift in the end that I
- 20:17Speaker 1: was like, Oh, this is kind of like I thought
- 20:19Speaker 1: we were gonna get a good movie out of this.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Finally by the end, I was like, oh, really it's
- 20:23Speaker 1: Stuart Love.
- 20:24Speaker 2: It's to a Yeah, it's it's it bounds, It's PG
- 20:27Speaker 2: thirteen I found out. Yeah, but it really goes from
- 20:30Speaker 2: being the intelligence of a child's movie in the nineties,
- 20:35Speaker 2: Like isn't technically teenage? Mean Interurles also a kid's movie,
- 20:39Speaker 2: you know, in the nineties, but it's like dark, It's
- 20:41Speaker 2: like quite dark.
- 20:43Speaker 1: So I think Mario is probably closer to Ninja Turtles
- 20:45Speaker 1: than to this in the like the darker atmosphere. Yeah,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I think this was going more for like, I think
- 20:51Speaker 1: the comparison to the Karate Kid is like a really
- 20:53Speaker 1: apt like comparison to make because it really feels like
- 20:58Speaker 1: it's one of those like you could be this kid,
- 21:00Speaker 1: like even though you're not a kung fu fighter. You
- 21:02Speaker 1: could beat him because he's a little bit less traditional
- 21:05Speaker 1: and a little more fun and silly, and he gets
- 21:07Speaker 1: the girl.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Yeah, this movie's doing a lot. This movie's doing a
- 21:11Speaker 2: lot of other movies. So the plot of this movie
- 21:14Speaker 2: is that these two boys have the halves of a
- 21:17Speaker 2: Chinese medallion, which, by the way, I'm like ninety nine
- 21:21Speaker 2: percent sure that we start in ancient China, and I'm
- 21:24Speaker 2: ninety nine percent sure of the Chinese that they.
- 21:26Speaker 1: We start someplace in China.
- 21:28Speaker 2: To be very exact, it's like Brooklyn, China. Because they're
- 21:33Speaker 2: not speaking Chinese at all. I'm like, not, I don't
- 21:36Speaker 2: think it doesn't even sound like Chinese. They say in
- 21:39Speaker 2: the middle that the bad guy's name, Shuko, means something
- 21:42Speaker 2: in Japanese like a Japanese warlord.
- 21:43Speaker 1: That's what it is.
- 21:45Speaker 2: That's a daimio or showgun. I looked up shuko on
- 21:49Speaker 2: Google and it says that is a ceremonial like chef's apron.
- 21:57Speaker 1: So we're starting the movie off of racism. So that's awesome,
- 22:00Speaker 1: love that, Oh God.
- 22:02Speaker 2: But then it's doing like it's doing ancient like I'll
- 22:05Speaker 2: say it, oriental magic, mysticism, because this is the era
- 22:09Speaker 2: of the world where they don't know what to do
- 22:10Speaker 2: with Asia for listeners, just as a reference, I'm Asian American.
- 22:17Speaker 2: And then they're also doing kung fu, but they're also
- 22:21Speaker 2: doing the street gang thing.
- 22:24Speaker 1: It's it's just a lot. It's like it's it's a lot. No,
- 22:28Speaker 1: it is definitely like I feel like there's an era
- 22:31Speaker 1: of movies at this time where it's like, we don't
- 22:33Speaker 1: need to be culturally appropriate. We can just reference the
- 22:35Speaker 1: culture and that's enough. Yeah. I feel like I've watched
- 22:39Speaker 1: a lot of TV shows where like they just go
- 22:42Speaker 1: for the like, oh, the ancient Indian wisdom of like
- 22:45Speaker 1: a native tribe, with like no research, no background, no
- 22:49Speaker 1: like logic, just like we're in America, Indians died here.
- 22:53Speaker 1: That's a thing.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Yeah, they absolutely do that because one of the main
- 22:57Speaker 2: henchmen is like he's supposed to be Native America. I
- 23:00Speaker 2: didn't get that until they made reference to it in
- 23:03Speaker 2: a in a I think a racist.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Joke on same thing. I did not click until then.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Yeah, they get to the point where they introduce a
- 23:12Speaker 2: lot of characters into it, and then they just go
- 23:15Speaker 2: they just go bananas. Where there's there's like a gang
- 23:18Speaker 2: that comes up and your notes on this are just great,
- 23:20Speaker 2: so please.
- 23:22Speaker 1: So first of all, it's like the the TV CGI
- 23:25Speaker 1: that we get here is just like I think it's
- 23:27Speaker 1: like during the car chase, and like their cars first
- 23:29Speaker 1: of all, are like these weird mad Maxi in future
- 23:31Speaker 1: cars or like they're just like rinked it up with
- 23:34Speaker 1: like a furnace in the front seat that can just
- 23:36Speaker 1: dump it into to make it go faster, which is
- 23:38Speaker 1: the most like child logic ever, but like weirdly reminds
- 23:42Speaker 1: me of the car chase scene for Mario. Yes it yeah,
- 23:46Speaker 1: And then like even so, first of all, our main villain,
- 23:49Speaker 1: the lead of this gang, whose name has stuck with
- 23:51Speaker 1: me because I love it so much, is a Bobo,
- 23:53Speaker 1: because that's a name you give somebody.
- 23:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:56Speaker 1: His second in command is just like, oh, you sucking
- 23:59Speaker 1: video games. Let me drive the car with a remote
- 24:02Speaker 1: control while our windshield is blocked because we have computer
- 24:05Speaker 1: game in our car.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Oh that's right.
- 24:07Speaker 1: The CGI is just so bad. I love it. And
- 24:11Speaker 1: then ultimately we get the the end of this amazing,
- 24:14Speaker 1: this amazing scene. I also feel like we mentioned the
- 24:17Speaker 1: Channel sixty nine news. Uh, Van of White is just
- 24:20Speaker 1: one of the anchors on the news station and their
- 24:23Speaker 1: weather man is Andy Dick. Like what weird? Like were
- 24:26Speaker 1: these cameos you needed to get for a children's movie
- 24:29Speaker 1: in the nineties?
- 24:30Speaker 2: Yeah, man, especially me knowing who Andy Dick is. I
- 24:33Speaker 2: know what Vana White is. Andy Dick is.
- 24:36Speaker 1: I only know him a few was like more like
- 24:38Speaker 1: comedy roles, but like at that age, I wouldn't have
- 24:39Speaker 1: known him. It's like up there with like the genie
- 24:41Speaker 1: references of like like at least those you can be like,
- 24:44Speaker 1: I get these are references I'm not getting, But Andy
- 24:45Speaker 1: Dick I wouldn't have figured out as a kid. But
- 24:48Speaker 1: we have this this this chase scene. This looks like
- 24:51Speaker 1: it's gonna be a big fight. But then Alyssa Milano's
- 24:54Speaker 1: character shows up with her gang, and can we just
- 24:57Speaker 1: the reveal of this gang popping up in this alley
- 25:00Speaker 1: Like they're on the rooftops, they're hiding in trash cans,
- 25:03Speaker 1: that there's a group of them that are just against
- 25:05Speaker 1: the wall in graffiti camo jackets, like they've just been
- 25:09Speaker 1: standing in this in this alleyway for who knows how
- 25:12Speaker 1: long in case someone came by and needed rescuing. Yeah,
- 25:16Speaker 1: Oh it just that was one of those moments that
- 25:18Speaker 1: just like, like that is just too funny. I could
- 25:20Speaker 1: not live with that. I had to pause and like
- 25:23Speaker 1: roll over for a few minutes time. Now, this movie, man,
- 25:27Speaker 1: it really is. It's funny unintentionally, yes, Like I feel
- 25:31Speaker 1: like that was a scene that was meant to be
- 25:33Speaker 1: cool and it's just laughable. Up there with a not
- 25:36Speaker 1: too long later, the Jimmy and Billy are running away
- 25:40Speaker 1: and they like skid to a halt and it literally
- 25:43Speaker 1: plays the sound of a car skidding. It's awesome because like,
- 25:47Speaker 1: again in cartoons, you would do that, you would use
- 25:49Speaker 1: the car skiding noise on someone like coming to a
- 25:52Speaker 1: halt in like a cartoon. This movie should have been
- 25:55Speaker 1: a cartoon, is what I'm saying.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it should have, just because it's real cheesy
- 26:00Speaker 2: at certain points it's real cheesy. Oh yeah, it also
- 26:04Speaker 2: takes stuff so seriously.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Oh god. Yeah. The villain. The villain seems to be like, like,
- 26:10Speaker 1: it's amazing how serious he is despite being the funniest
- 26:13Speaker 1: looking and like having some of those bizarre lines. And again,
- 26:17Speaker 1: in the in the history of video game movies, we
- 26:20Speaker 1: will get to some villains that are way too serious
- 26:22Speaker 1: for some of the best lines later. Yeah, I'm looking
- 26:25Speaker 1: at U street Fighter, but I kind of love the
- 26:29Speaker 1: similarities of we have this young hip boss type character
- 26:34Speaker 1: who vaguely looks like a younger King Cooper from the
- 26:36Speaker 1: Maria films who has this machine to evolve a dumb monster.
- 26:43Speaker 1: You know.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Just kind of connecting some dots here real quick. Yeah,
- 26:46Speaker 2: our villains, Yeah, absolutely so just the first two video
- 26:51Speaker 2: game movies we've done. We're gonna make some comparisons here.
- 26:55Speaker 2: But it's an interesting question that you've put out here
- 26:57Speaker 2: where it's like, is this a president? Is this something
- 27:00Speaker 2: that people were just like, let's do this for video
- 27:02Speaker 2: game movies. But I was I was like, oh, yeah,
- 27:05Speaker 2: is that the blue light in the sky, because like
- 27:08Speaker 2: every movie from like twenty ten to twenty twenty had
- 27:12Speaker 2: a blue light in the sky, you know, And I
- 27:15Speaker 2: wonder if that was the blue light in the sky
- 27:17Speaker 2: for movies back then, because I could have sworn the
- 27:18Speaker 2: TMNT two.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Was also about making people into giant monsters. Oh yeah,
- 27:25Speaker 1: it was supposed to be using the good to like
- 27:26Speaker 1: mutate more like mutants that our Rangers movie do that too,
- 27:31Speaker 1: like brain control ooze. Yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, I even
- 27:35Speaker 1: oohs oh, I even oohs. Again that is not part
- 27:38Speaker 1: of the canon we're gonna be covering. But goddamn is
- 27:40Speaker 1: that a good movie. But again for all the wrong reasons,
- 27:43Speaker 1: it's a great movie most Yeah, I even being amazing.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Yeah to Helpless sort of set more of the scene
- 27:48Speaker 1: of the movie. It's just been decided that as soon
- 27:51Speaker 1: as the sun goes down, there is a curfew and
- 27:53Speaker 1: only the gangs come out at night and they just
- 27:55Speaker 1: get to rule the city. Like the cops just basically
- 27:58Speaker 1: go like, nope, it's nighttime, we're done. Like that is.
- 28:01Speaker 1: During the day, the cops are there and they save
- 28:04Speaker 1: people and they try to be good guys, even though
- 28:06Speaker 1: we know they're not. All cops are bastards. But at
- 28:09Speaker 1: night they are just basically like, nope, the gangs take over.
- 28:12Speaker 1: We're not gonna fight this. We've made an agreement. They
- 28:14Speaker 1: get half the city to themselves every night, and then
- 28:18Speaker 1: like Shoko, I guess kind of like unites them all
- 28:21Speaker 1: in a sense for his mission of getting the other
- 28:23Speaker 1: half of the medallion from the brothers. So when he
- 28:26Speaker 1: sends the gang's plural to attack them, I think you
- 28:30Speaker 1: said it the best. It's the village people. It is cowboys,
- 28:33Speaker 1: it is guys with the mohawks. It's like school uniforms,
- 28:37Speaker 1: metal heads, I say, bikers, not like bikers. I'm talking
- 28:41Speaker 1: like dudes on bicycles with helmets and like you know,
- 28:44Speaker 1: like hand signals and then a maleman for some reason,
- 28:48Speaker 1: like what this gang.
- 28:51Speaker 2: But I read that note before I got into this movie,
- 28:54Speaker 2: and when the scene showed up, he's he's the mailman
- 28:58Speaker 2: is very prevalent.
- 28:59Speaker 1: They love the mailman.
- 29:01Speaker 2: But the very first time he shows up, he's just
- 29:03Speaker 2: in the background. He's like way off in the distance.
- 29:05Speaker 2: He's like fifty yards out and you can spot him
- 29:07Speaker 2: and you're like, that's that's a mailman. And then up
- 29:10Speaker 2: close and it's like uniform. Like we're not saying he
- 29:13Speaker 2: looks like a mailman gang. We're saying that he's got
- 29:15Speaker 2: a US Postal Accurate Service uniform. He's got the bag,
- 29:20Speaker 2: he's got the dog mace like he's out here in
- 29:23Speaker 2: the shorts.
- 29:24Speaker 1: It's so good. The other thing I noticed too.
- 29:27Speaker 2: I don't think this is part of the village of
- 29:29Speaker 2: people at all, but people were just wearing what I
- 29:30Speaker 2: call mister mind gloves. There's the time, like froghands with
- 29:36Speaker 2: extra digits at the end.
- 29:38Speaker 1: I did not catch that.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Man. Yeah, there's just this clown guy and he's like ah,
- 29:42Speaker 2: and I was like, oh Jesus, what is that? What
- 29:45Speaker 2: is that supposed to be? Who made those gloves?
- 29:48Speaker 1: Oh my god, this is the ultimate causeplay. We're gonna
- 29:51Speaker 1: go as two members from this gangs if anyone can
- 29:53Speaker 1: figure it out. Yeah.
- 29:54Speaker 2: The school uniform was something that really off put me
- 29:57Speaker 2: because the guy who wears a school uniform is like,
- 30:00Speaker 2: no younger than thirty five.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Yeah, like not a student. Yeah, man, that is like
- 30:04Speaker 1: you consciously made the choice to be school uniform themed
- 30:08Speaker 1: as a dude as part of your gang.
- 30:11Speaker 2: You're like, yeah, we're gonna come in with propeller hats
- 30:14Speaker 2: and shorts, but suspendeds doesn't. It's really got me, man,
- 30:21Speaker 2: I just I can't this movie. It's gotta know right, Like,
- 30:25Speaker 2: it's gotta know that it's funny.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Like it really feels like the direction was Okay, I
- 30:30Speaker 1: know it's live action, but be a cartoon as much
- 30:33Speaker 1: as you can. Is that to the benefit. I don't know.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Usually I'm good with that. Usually I'm like more camp,
- 30:38Speaker 2: you know, lean into the lean into the silliness of
- 30:42Speaker 2: your world and so and so forth. This one, I'm like,
- 30:44Speaker 2: you know what, whoever did the my hands You're out,
- 30:47Speaker 2: You're out?
- 30:47Speaker 1: Yes, that was too far. We have a limit. Maleman
- 30:52Speaker 1: middle aged man as student fine by me my hands
- 30:56Speaker 1: in the trash crazy. I imagine this is like multiple
- 30:59Speaker 1: gangs coming together, like unified under Shuko, which we never
- 31:02Speaker 1: really I feel like, isn't explained. Like I feel like
- 31:05Speaker 1: if there was even a line somewhere that a cut
- 31:07Speaker 1: that was just like, oh, there's Gang A and Gang B,
- 31:10Speaker 1: and that gang is school themed in that gang is
- 31:12Speaker 1: bike theme, which is already ridiculous and would have fit
- 31:15Speaker 1: in the world of this movie. Yeah, I also do
- 31:18Speaker 1: love that, like post this horrible gang fight scene when
- 31:21Speaker 1: the news is talking about it, and like the cops
- 31:22Speaker 1: are being interviewed, who, of course, is Alissa Milano's character's father,
- 31:26Speaker 1: because why wouldn't it be. You can very clearly hear
- 31:29Speaker 1: an interview where ask the question maybe the gangs just
- 31:33Speaker 1: need a hug talking to you.
- 31:37Speaker 2: I'm kind of turning around. Maybe the theme of this
- 31:40Speaker 2: show is I just love every movie that we watch.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Oh, just spoiler alert. I love this movie like un ironically.
- 31:46Speaker 1: I think this movie is like I was joking before
- 31:49Speaker 1: that I would love to go see the Mario film
- 31:51Speaker 1: in the style of like a rocky horror, like get
- 31:53Speaker 1: dressed up and yell at the screen and throw things.
- 31:57Speaker 1: This movie is like the same level of like. I
- 32:00Speaker 1: don't think I like it as much as the Mario movie,
- 32:02Speaker 1: but I think it's the same realm of like I
- 32:03Speaker 1: would love to go see this with a bunch of
- 32:05Speaker 1: rowdy people.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I'm halfway there with you. I think
- 32:09Speaker 2: I'm similar to where I like the Mario movie better
- 32:12Speaker 2: than this movie. It's funnier, it's more self referential, and
- 32:15Speaker 2: so I think that I would let it go. But
- 32:17Speaker 2: I will say that all the plot details that you've
- 32:20Speaker 2: shared with me thus far I've apparently somehow missed, because
- 32:24Speaker 2: I just I turned my brain off halfway through this movie.
- 32:27Speaker 2: I think it went from being fun and like, oh,
- 32:30Speaker 2: that's charming to like a chore again. With the fight scenes,
- 32:34Speaker 2: they just started getting more boring. Yeah, there was one
- 32:37Speaker 2: part where my brain turned on. So I think this
- 32:39Speaker 2: is an homage maybe to the video game, because you
- 32:42Speaker 2: had told me a bit of the plot of the
- 32:44Speaker 2: first video game where we play primarily as Billy.
- 32:48Speaker 1: I'm fairly sure you play as Billy.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Yes, because Jimmy turns out to be the bad guy,
- 32:53Speaker 2: I guess or something. And in this movie, the third act,
- 32:57Speaker 2: Shuko has the medallion that can possess people. I suppose
- 33:02Speaker 2: that seems to be it's that it makes him too
- 33:04Speaker 2: d it makes him a shadow thing.
- 33:07Speaker 1: He's still affected by like a fan ripping him apart
- 33:09Speaker 1: at some point, and like that doesn't have any effect,
- 33:12Speaker 1: and he can possess people. That seems to be the ability,
- 33:15Speaker 1: but weird shadow antics is a side effect. I guess.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Yeah, all this was an asterisk. We've watched the movie.
- 33:22Speaker 2: We don't understand Shuto, the bad guy possesses Jimmy iron
- 33:29Speaker 2: chef guy and they have a fight, and I think
- 33:31Speaker 2: that's an homage to the first video game. That being said,
- 33:34Speaker 2: when I watched that scene, I was like, why wouldn't
- 33:36Speaker 2: you just have Billion Jimmy actually have a falling apart,
- 33:40Speaker 2: like a natural falling apart, and so then they could
- 33:44Speaker 2: quarrel and battle out their differences as brothers, then come
- 33:48Speaker 2: together and probably unite the real power of the Double
- 33:52Speaker 2: Dragon or some nonsense like just me kind of thinking
- 33:56Speaker 2: about that got me mad because I was like, Okay,
- 34:00Speaker 2: so I thought about that like fifty seconds in, and
- 34:04Speaker 2: somehow no one else thought about this, and they made
- 34:06Speaker 2: the movie. They thought about this, they paid money to
- 34:08Speaker 2: do this. I'm on my computer right now watching this
- 34:10Speaker 2: movie making notes for this show.
- 34:13Speaker 1: So I have so two points to bring up in
- 34:16Speaker 1: regards to that thought process. So first, I think you're right.
- 34:18Speaker 1: I think that would be a much more interesting dynamic.
- 34:22Speaker 1: I think the downside being really doesn't seem like the
- 34:25Speaker 1: kind of movie that wants to have thought provoking character
- 34:28Speaker 1: arcs and like drama. Like I feel like a modern
- 34:31Speaker 1: redo of this with like even if it was as
- 34:34Speaker 1: silly as this, Like I look at things like the
- 34:37Speaker 1: more recent Fallout franchise, which was like very dark and
- 34:40Speaker 1: serious but like had a lot of funny silly moments.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Given the context you're working in, I think this movie
- 34:46Speaker 1: could have done the same thing and been like just
- 34:48Speaker 1: as silly, but could have woven into better narrative. But
- 34:51Speaker 1: I think given the we're aiming for the like dumb
- 34:54Speaker 1: kid audience, there wasn't much thought about it. I'm sure
- 34:57Speaker 1: if someone pitched that in a meeting to the exact
- 35:00Speaker 1: as they're making this movie, they would have been laughed off.
- 35:02Speaker 2: I don't hate your idea at all. I think that's
- 35:03Speaker 2: actually really genius. I think if we made a modern
- 35:06Speaker 2: remake of this movie, now, lean into everything that does
- 35:10Speaker 2: make this movie charming, right, like, lean into all the nineties.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Maybe maybe take out a bobo being a freakish monster.
- 35:15Speaker 2: I that that was crazy.
- 35:18Speaker 1: He becomes his redemption is kind of worth of though.
- 35:22Speaker 2: It is funny because it's the classic monster turn into
- 35:25Speaker 2: just an endearing dumb guy situation. But he's horrifying. He's
- 35:29Speaker 2: just ballooned out monster to look at. He's force fed
- 35:33Speaker 2: spinach by Alissa Milano, and that farting his life out
- 35:38Speaker 2: is like a weak point for him. That was when
- 35:41Speaker 2: the movie lost me.
- 35:42Speaker 1: All right, Oh yeah, it's that was like peak, like
- 35:45Speaker 1: we need a fart joke now, stat God, what do
- 35:49Speaker 1: kids hate spinach? That's his punishment eating spinach. Leave all
- 35:54Speaker 1: of that out.
- 35:54Speaker 2: But I think if we leaned into like the machismo
- 35:57Speaker 2: of even even exaggerated bit like take it to the
- 36:00Speaker 2: eighties and we had these two brothers who were just like,
- 36:03Speaker 2: oh man, all my life is karate and it solves
- 36:06Speaker 2: everything and I'm awesome, and then there's just an equally
- 36:08Speaker 2: like even make them the nerd right because Jimmy's characters
- 36:11Speaker 2: I think too hard about karate some way somehow, and
- 36:14Speaker 2: Billy's like, I just go with the flow, man, Like
- 36:17Speaker 2: have these machismo characters back in and over the top
- 36:21Speaker 2: and all this other stuff, but at least make it
- 36:23Speaker 2: a coherent plot and maybe respect.
- 36:25Speaker 1: The viewer a bit.
- 36:27Speaker 2: That's all I want is goddamn respect.
- 36:29Speaker 3: True.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Yeah, And again, like like looking back early in the
- 36:32Speaker 1: film when during that initial fight where they're doing like
- 36:34Speaker 1: a tag team fight and like Jimmy's about to win
- 36:38Speaker 1: and Billy's like, nope, I'm forcing you to tag me
- 36:40Speaker 1: in and then like throws the match to like play
- 36:43Speaker 1: a joke. Almost like I could see that being like
- 36:46Speaker 1: the initial like you don't respect the art and like, oh,
- 36:49Speaker 1: you're just you know, too much into your like practice
- 36:52Speaker 1: and not having a good time. And then eventually into
- 36:55Speaker 1: the split you can even have them Jimmy be like
- 36:59Speaker 1: not possessed, but like lured into shooto side because he
- 37:02Speaker 1: like respects the martial arts.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Yeah, he quarrels too much with his with his brother,
- 37:07Speaker 2: they see on opposite ends but they come back together
- 37:10Speaker 2: towards the end and unlock the Double Dragon. I still
- 37:12Speaker 2: don't get the double Dragon thing. I hope that they're
- 37:15Speaker 2: maybe two dragons and they're the Double Dragon. But yeah, whatever, because.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Again it's one of those things like the medallions don't
- 37:21Speaker 1: exist in the game, like to the idea of so
- 37:24Speaker 1: again spoiler for the original game. The whole The whole
- 37:28Speaker 1: plot essentially is Billy's girlfriend, who is a listen Molano's
- 37:31Speaker 1: character gets kidnapped and you go fight a bunch of
- 37:34Speaker 1: gangs to rescue her. And then the surprises, h the
- 37:36Speaker 1: leader of the Evil Shadow gang is my brother Jimmy,
- 37:39Speaker 1: and you beat Jimmy and save your girlfriend. We want
- 37:42Speaker 1: to mirror the game. They have to fight at the end,
- 37:44Speaker 1: but they're brothers, so you use the dark possession as
- 37:47Speaker 1: a way to do it. But like the talismans the
- 37:50Speaker 1: magic powers, none of those come from the game. That
- 37:52Speaker 1: was completely for the movie.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Yeah, very movies to just put all your magical things
- 37:57Speaker 2: into a mcguffin in a.
- 37:59Speaker 1: Magine, just a McGuff mcuffin isn't the best fucking word.
- 38:01Speaker 1: I love that word years ago in film school and
- 38:04Speaker 1: have never dropped it. You just use it all the time.
- 38:07Speaker 1: I'm hungry for mcuffin. I swear to go. I want
- 38:10Speaker 1: to go to McDonald's. Get myself one of those maple
- 38:13Speaker 1: mabe maple egg and she's a mcguffin.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Oh the breakfast mcuffin. You know that at ten a
- 38:18Speaker 2: m right, some.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Of them do it now past ten, but then the
- 38:22Speaker 1: maple one they only do to eleven total.
- 38:24Speaker 2: Sam, You're you're You're the Jimmy to my Billy Lee.
- 38:29Speaker 1: All right, as I'm as I'm completely just not Asian
- 38:34Speaker 1: as a character. They're there, They're there. Are they twins?
- 38:39Speaker 1: Do we ever discuss if their twins or if one's
- 38:40Speaker 1: older or younger? I think you're supposed to be twins. Yeah,
- 38:44Speaker 1: I do love that about the nineties.
- 38:45Speaker 2: So Billy's just super white and then Jimmy is uh
- 38:50Speaker 2: played by Mark Allen di Caaskos. I hope I said
- 38:53Speaker 2: that right. But yeah, he's a legendary Hawaiian actor. I
- 38:56Speaker 2: think he's been on Hawaii five oh at some point
- 38:59Speaker 2: or another as well.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Well.
- 39:00Speaker 2: But I do like that about the nineties. It's the
- 39:02Speaker 2: same thing with like the Brandy Cinderella race just doesn't
- 39:05Speaker 2: play into that at all. Their brothers. Who cares? Why
- 39:08Speaker 2: not they could? I think they have the same dad
- 39:10Speaker 2: in the movie. In the video games, they are for
- 39:13Speaker 2: sure twin brothers. Yeah again, totally totally look different because
- 39:17Speaker 2: you gotta have player one and player two.
- 39:19Speaker 1: But I kind of and again the magic of video games,
- 39:21Speaker 1: like Mario and Luigi, you just color swaft one and
- 39:23Speaker 1: it's a new brother. Yeah, a third a third Lee brother.
- 39:28Speaker 1: Oh my god. As we talked about earlier, we do
- 39:31Speaker 1: have like this really decent like Shueco gets both Talsman's
- 39:34Speaker 1: becomes two weird Shadow Warrior dudes.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Oh is that what happened? Okay, the twin Henchmans said
- 39:42Speaker 2: he had. That wasn't them, No, no, they were just Hughey.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Hughey and Lewis were just off to the side who
- 39:47Speaker 1: eventually like leave hitchhiking like they have like a sad
- 39:51Speaker 1: ending for the two of them for no reason. Oh yeah,
- 39:53Speaker 1: that's that's our film's outro. So again we end on
- 39:56Speaker 1: the brothers reunite. They've kicked Shugo out of his like
- 39:59Speaker 1: brother uh he oh he unlocks the other talisman, which
- 40:03Speaker 1: does literally nothing except they claim makes him physically stronger.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Oh right, like like one of them is like, I
- 40:11Speaker 1: can become a cool shadow thing and possessed people. The
- 40:13Speaker 1: other one is you can hit me, and I'm okay.
- 40:16Speaker 2: The player too medallion.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Like I was, like, I was really honestly, legitimately wondering,
- 40:22Speaker 1: like what weird shitty CG we were gonna get for
- 40:24Speaker 1: his ability, Like I'm picturing like a nineties attempt at
- 40:28Speaker 1: like Colossus from X Men, with like the metal exo
- 40:31Speaker 1: like thing, but with ninety CGI. Yeah, and as we discussed,
- 40:35Speaker 1: I mean the villain was the T one thousand, so
- 40:37Speaker 1: like he's not outside of the realm of like weird
- 40:39Speaker 1: liquid metal CG. I would have loved to have seen
- 40:42Speaker 1: Billy take on like a cool metal form, even just
- 40:45Speaker 1: like a few hits before they go to a classic
- 40:48Speaker 1: like Brothers Versus Shadow Essence Win and then possessed Shuko
- 40:53Speaker 1: make him give all his money to the police department, right,
- 40:57Speaker 1: which I really don't like, let himself get arrested, and
- 41:00Speaker 1: then just leave like okay, slapstick ending, I guess bye,
- 41:06Speaker 1: yeah and fitting in to the majority of this movie. Sorry,
- 41:12Speaker 1: the actual ending is they let a bobo drive their
- 41:16Speaker 1: car and they all scream and that's the end.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Yeah, God with the post or the pre credit scene
- 41:23Speaker 2: being here.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Oh yeah, of Hughey and Lewis just walking away sadly
- 41:26Speaker 1: like the end of it up some of the Hulk
- 41:27Speaker 1: or some shit with.
- 41:29Speaker 2: A cardboard Scien saying henchman for ire.
- 41:32Speaker 1: Yes, that's what I love is That is the sign
- 41:34Speaker 1: I are carrying around more often. Okay, Well, with the
- 41:39Speaker 1: movie and our thoughts wrapped up, why don't we touse
- 41:41Speaker 1: this to a little break, get everyone a chance to
- 41:43Speaker 1: get themselves a drink and a whatever, and then come
- 41:46Speaker 1: back and we'll talk some more fun facts about the
- 41:47Speaker 1: movie for you. Welcome back, Thank you everyone for hopefully returning.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Maybe you got to the ad break and we're like,
- 41:58Speaker 1: I'm done. I don't want to hear fun facts about
- 42:00Speaker 1: this film, and you've left. So if you left, screw you.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Welcome those who stayed. So I did. I dug up
- 42:06Speaker 1: for you, Jason. Some fun facts about this movie that
- 42:08Speaker 1: I thought would be some fun conversation starters. Some of
- 42:10Speaker 1: them we may have touched on a little bit in
- 42:12Speaker 1: our go through, but I kind of love the fact
- 42:15Speaker 1: that so talking about that really silly boat chase slash
- 42:19Speaker 1: jet ski chase scene that was filmed in northeast Ohio.
- 42:24Speaker 1: It used seven hundred gallons of gasoline with two hundred
- 42:28Speaker 1: gallons of alcohol to make the explosions and fires, and
- 42:33Speaker 1: despite ample warning from several news outlets the night before,
- 42:36Speaker 1: they received tons of panic calls from like locals. I
- 42:40Speaker 1: think two hundred and ten phone calls were recorded to
- 42:43Speaker 1: emergency services for this explosion in the lake.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Dude, people thought people thought stuff happened, or are they
- 42:51Speaker 2: just doing off the books.
- 42:52Speaker 1: I've lived in enough towns where like films take place,
- 42:55Speaker 1: or I've been to enough towns like there is ample
- 42:58Speaker 1: notice of when a film is happening. Maybe the nineties
- 43:01Speaker 1: were a little less extreme, but also with that level
- 43:03Speaker 1: of explosions, Like I'm sure the area was like roped
- 43:06Speaker 1: off for like a day in advance, and I guess
- 43:09Speaker 1: people just like don't watch the news or get the
- 43:11Speaker 1: news the way we do today. So yeah, waking up
- 43:14Speaker 1: to the lake is on fire and exploding is worth
- 43:17Speaker 1: a phone call to the emergency services.
- 43:19Speaker 2: I like the idea that they didn't rope anything off
- 43:22Speaker 2: and there's just some like a RC boat in the
- 43:25Speaker 2: lake and he's just enjoying his day. He just gets
- 43:28Speaker 2: ripped to shreds.
- 43:29Speaker 1: I was just picturing like the kid in like the
- 43:31Speaker 1: sailor out for there, like Donald Duck style with Oh daddy,
- 43:34Speaker 1: take my boat. Oh I love my boat. What's that boom?
- 43:39Speaker 1: No more boat.
- 43:43Speaker 2: Me and my mouse brother are just gonna have a lake.
- 43:46Speaker 1: I'm sorry you assuming that Nick and Donald are brothers.
- 43:49Speaker 2: No, Stuart little that's what they.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Oh no, he was in the boat, my mouse brother
- 43:58Speaker 1: Deddy I know from the South. Well, speaking of siblings, segue.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Kind of cute is Alyssa Milano whose character name is Mary,
- 44:09Speaker 1: and I forgot the entire time and start writing down
- 44:12Speaker 1: character names on like a little side notes.
- 44:14Speaker 2: I have them now just call her a Lissa Milana but.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Honestly more respect but her. The character of Mark, who
- 44:20Speaker 1: is her little brother, is actually played by Alyssa's little
- 44:23Speaker 1: brother Corey in the movie. Oh that's cute.
- 44:25Speaker 2: He's a he's a little kid from memory right. He
- 44:27Speaker 2: shows him a one scene.
- 44:28Speaker 1: Oh yeah, he has like one scene. I think he
- 44:29Speaker 1: like walks in on her actual's brushing her teeth, or
- 44:31Speaker 1: like she's brushing her wig because her her platinum blonde
- 44:35Speaker 1: hair is her actual hair, but she wears a wig
- 44:38Speaker 1: around the rest of the time to hide from her father.
- 44:40Speaker 1: I guess the worst wig. Oh yeah, the wig, Like
- 44:44Speaker 1: I was like, it's again, I know if it's just
- 44:45Speaker 1: nineties and I'm not a big I don't. I don't
- 44:47Speaker 1: wear wigs. I'm not a wig guy. I love Dragon
- 44:50Speaker 1: like for less. So I see a lot of wigs,
- 44:53Speaker 1: and cause playing I guess is that I can tie
- 44:54Speaker 1: it there and make it less weird. There's all cool
- 44:56Speaker 1: things to answer. I never worren a wig. I've seen
- 44:59Speaker 1: a lot of wigs, but hers was like as soon
- 45:01Speaker 1: as she walked out of like, oh that's a wig.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Without the previous scene, I would know it's a wig.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I would be more convincing in a wig.
- 45:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, there's your next Cause play Alyssa Milano's character
- 45:12Speaker 1: from Double Dragon, not Marian Alyssa Milano's character Super Hot.
- 45:17Speaker 1: So there's a moment in the final battle that, of
- 45:18Speaker 1: course I did not catch this. The fun facts brought
- 45:20Speaker 1: it up, but I think was so fun to bring up.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Is Linda Lash, who was the name of the character
- 45:25Speaker 1: with the whip, because of course her name has to
- 45:26Speaker 1: be a pun yep played by Christina Wagner, gets into
- 45:30Speaker 1: a fight with Alissa Milano's character and uses the line now,
- 45:34Speaker 1: who's the boss, and then later the response is you're lucky.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Generally I put people in the hospital. Alyssa Milano starred
- 45:42Speaker 1: on the television series Who's the Boss, and Wagner was
- 45:44Speaker 1: a regular on General Hospital. Oh that's cute, so like
- 45:47Speaker 1: to throw in these lines, and of course again like
- 45:50Speaker 1: is I think it was a good term for it.
- 45:51Speaker 1: But like the parents joke, the like parent watching this
- 45:54Speaker 1: movie with their kids for some reason would go, ah,
- 45:57Speaker 1: that's clever, which leads to my last fun aren't really
- 46:00Speaker 1: many for this, unfortunately, is that the Henchman the Henchman
- 46:04Speaker 1: Hughey and Lewis. At some point the line Shuko gives
- 46:07Speaker 1: them as Huey Lewis any News, obviously referencing the band
- 46:10Speaker 1: Huey Lewis in the News who I do love. But
- 46:12Speaker 1: I think it's just such a funny name for henchman,
- 46:14Speaker 1: like it' sais like a. It very much feels like
- 46:17Speaker 1: they needed the name for the Henchmen. Someone made this
- 46:20Speaker 1: joke and they ran with it, which I kind of love.
- 46:25Speaker 1: So normally here we talk about what we would change.
- 46:27Speaker 1: I think we kind of already touched on it. But
- 46:28Speaker 1: I really do love the idea of seeing this as
- 46:32Speaker 1: a still being a little on the silly and comedic side,
- 46:36Speaker 1: but embrace the character development more and again, maybe that's
- 46:40Speaker 1: better suited for a TV series where you can kind
- 46:42Speaker 1: of get a little more time with it, which, ironically
- 46:45Speaker 1: I feel like has just been the better place for
- 46:46Speaker 1: video game media recently has been television versus movie. Yeah,
- 46:50Speaker 1: we finally cracked the case. It was we need more
- 46:53Speaker 1: than an hour and a half to make this sixty
- 46:56Speaker 1: hour franchise scenereal. Yeah, yeah, No.
- 47:01Speaker 2: What I'd like to see this as is like a
- 47:03Speaker 2: reference to all the ridiculousness of nineties and eighties movies.
- 47:09Speaker 2: I think it being self referential was one of the
- 47:12Speaker 2: strongest points of the movie. I think the silliness was there.
- 47:15Speaker 2: I just think that if it had just a bit
- 47:18Speaker 2: more of that touch. If you're gonna do a fight scene,
- 47:21Speaker 2: do good. If you're gonna do a joke, make it funny.
- 47:23Speaker 2: It's not just ridiculousness and ludicrousness for ridiculousness sakes, if
- 47:27Speaker 2: that makes any sense, Because you could do shock humor,
- 47:30Speaker 2: but don't let that be the one foot you stand on.
- 47:33Speaker 2: I suppose and really really embraced that to the umpty degree,
- 47:38Speaker 2: and don't don't take your audiences as idiotic, you know,
- 47:43Speaker 2: like respect their intelligence. I think, yeah, there's bones of
- 47:46Speaker 2: something really good and charming here. But this was the
- 47:50Speaker 2: first one where I was like, yeah, video game movies
- 47:53Speaker 2: are bad, some reputation for that for a reason.
- 47:57Speaker 1: So I guess so that we should come up to
- 47:59Speaker 1: our our our fa our famous, our famous segment of
- 48:03Speaker 1: let's let's review this movie. Yes, so from a movie perspective,
- 48:08Speaker 1: so dropping the fact that from a video game movie perspective,
- 48:11Speaker 1: how would you rank this?
- 48:13Speaker 2: I would rate this zero dragons, oh hard. Half a
- 48:19Speaker 2: dragon out out of a double half half a dragon
- 48:24Speaker 2: out of two possible dragons. Yes, I weirdly have a.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Weak spot for this movie, having only seen it now.
- 48:31Speaker 1: So this is not nostalgia. This is just the jokes,
- 48:35Speaker 1: while they were bad, tickled me in the right way
- 48:37Speaker 1: where it's like, I get how bad this joke is.
- 48:39Speaker 2: I like it.
- 48:40Speaker 1: The fight scenes while they were like, I think I
- 48:43Speaker 1: was expecting better fight scenes, and I kind of just
- 48:45Speaker 1: like the like cartoonish level of slapsticks and some of
- 48:48Speaker 1: the combat had and I really really fucking loved Schuko
- 48:52Speaker 1: as a villain. I thought he was so much fun.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Every line he delivered, he was acting with such passion. Well,
- 48:58Speaker 1: everyone else knew this movie was like whatever, No, I
- 49:01Speaker 1: totally agree. So I'm gonna give this three out of
- 49:05Speaker 1: five village people? Which which of the village people?
- 49:09Speaker 2: The cop?
- 49:10Speaker 1: I think the cop. Unfortunately, I have to include him
- 49:13Speaker 1: just because the movie it's somebody cops in it, and
- 49:14Speaker 1: the cops get a bunch of money for no reason.
- 49:17Speaker 1: The biker I think the biker okay, And the construction workers.
- 49:22Speaker 1: I feel like they'd all fit into the gang fight
- 49:24Speaker 1: scene pretty well too. Okay, I love that. Now, as
- 49:28Speaker 1: far as an adaptation of a video game movie, I think,
- 49:31Speaker 1: I know we're gonna go with this one. But yeah,
- 49:33Speaker 1: it's tradition.
- 49:34Speaker 2: I think I'm gonna give this an a la cuisine
- 49:38Speaker 2: because I think given the source material, it's if anything
- 49:42Speaker 2: it adds on to it.
- 49:43Speaker 1: Yeah, pure and simple. It takes what incredibly like Again,
- 49:47Speaker 1: this is an era of video games where literally to
- 49:51Speaker 1: find the initial note I left you for the game's plot,
- 49:54Speaker 1: I had to find a scan of a PDF of
- 49:56Speaker 1: the game's original manual because nothing else Wikipedia doesn't have
- 50:01Speaker 1: that and again, that entire paragraph boils down to, like
- 50:07Speaker 1: I said, twin brothers girlfriend stolen. Turns out brother was
- 50:11Speaker 1: the villain like It could not be more cliche, and
- 50:15Speaker 1: despite having that being their starting material, they translated it
- 50:20Speaker 1: pretty well and then built a world around it, albeit
- 50:23Speaker 1: a completely nonsensical, unnecessary world around it, they did build
- 50:28Speaker 1: something kind of fun. All give its one horrifying monster
- 50:32Speaker 1: manuate Spitch. You can decide what that means to you.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Only good things for me, only good things.
- 50:42Speaker 4: There you go.
- 50:42Speaker 1: We'll hop out for another quick break and we'll come
- 50:44Speaker 1: back with some friends and a little game to see
- 50:47Speaker 1: how well they can understand this movie and its villains.
- 50:56Speaker 2: There we go.
- 50:57Speaker 1: We're back in the countdown in now everyone accordingly. Yeah, geez,
- 51:04Speaker 1: this is four perfectly trained and well organized podcasters recording
- 51:09Speaker 1: a podcast like normal podcasters do. Not a second round
- 51:12Speaker 1: because we missed the first one.
- 51:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it only took two episodes in Drew, but the
- 51:17Speaker 2: two naughty boys who should not be sat together have
- 51:19Speaker 2: already fucked up, specifically me. This is a second go
- 51:23Speaker 2: round of the bonus round here because I didn't press
- 51:27Speaker 2: record the first time.
- 51:28Speaker 1: So here we are three weeks and again I'm sorry
- 51:32Speaker 1: to your credit three other people who do podcasting pretty
- 51:35Speaker 1: much professionally did not think to check Ford or notice
- 51:39Speaker 1: that we never got a count down and the nice
- 51:41Speaker 1: big red recording screen of the talk. It was just
- 51:43Speaker 1: such a good time.
- 51:44Speaker 2: But speaking of which, our two guests here that we're
- 51:46Speaker 2: bringing in, it's the Geeks, four boys from the gate
- 51:50Speaker 2: Leapers cast, Ben and John, John and Ben, Hey, well,
- 51:55Speaker 2: welcome back.
- 51:58Speaker 4: I just figured it was it was an honor of
- 52:00Speaker 4: the topic that we would have to do to record.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Double Dragon double recordings.
- 52:06Speaker 4: Yeah, last time was the Billy recording. This one's the
- 52:09Speaker 4: Jimmy one. This is gonna be.
- 52:12Speaker 1: We all know Jimmy was clearly the better of the two.
- 52:14Speaker 1: I couldn't play with which anymore. It's been too long. Yep.
- 52:17Speaker 2: I was about to say the same thing, but I
- 52:19Speaker 2: also want to reiterate because genuinely I do want to
- 52:22Speaker 2: hear it again. You guys are very familiar with Jimmy
- 52:25Speaker 2: and Billy or whatever, Jimmy and Billy Lee.
- 52:28Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, well, I mean we grew like we grew
- 52:31Speaker 3: up with like we're old enough that like Double Dragon
- 52:33Speaker 3: was a childhood thing for us, you know, in the
- 52:36Speaker 3: Arcade and on the nes. Yeah, I just played a
- 52:39Speaker 3: shit ton of Double Dragon. There was a shitty cartoon
- 52:41Speaker 3: when we were kids.
- 52:42Speaker 1: There was oh my god, right, there was a shitty cartoon.
- 52:45Speaker 1: This came up in the past, and I think Jason
- 52:47Speaker 1: and I neither of us knew about it.
- 52:49Speaker 3: Like we said, well researched professional podcasters.
- 52:53Speaker 2: You guys are familiar with the movie as well.
- 52:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I watched it right before the last one, so
- 52:57Speaker 3: it was all fresh then probably faded now because it
- 53:01Speaker 3: was not like a core memory. You need to really
- 53:04Speaker 3: put this stuff in my permanent story.
- 53:08Speaker 4: Yeah, the impression is still there. But yeah, if you
- 53:11Speaker 4: ask me names of characters or significant plot details, I
- 53:15Speaker 4: think that has left. But yeah, I watched it the
- 53:18Speaker 4: night before and the morning of sort of split there.
- 53:23Speaker 4: I started to fall asleep in the middle.
- 53:24Speaker 2: But which speaks to the quality of this movie.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, like I think. Weirdly, I have so far
- 53:31Speaker 1: enjoyed all the movies you've watched on a level of
- 53:33Speaker 1: like this is just like fun, like popcorn movie mode,
- 53:37Speaker 1: Like I could just sit and be like this is
- 53:39Speaker 1: dumb eat popcorn. I'm waiting for them to truly get bad.
- 53:43Speaker 1: I think I know where that line is. But I'm excited.
- 53:45Speaker 4: Oh it's coming quick. Oh wait, never mind, I know
- 53:47Speaker 4: if you've watched it. Okay, but I see after listening
- 53:50Speaker 4: to the Mario episode, I was like, Oh, you're not
- 53:52Speaker 4: gonna feel this way about the Double Dragon episode.
- 53:56Speaker 1: I still I weirdly had a week spot for this movie.
- 53:58Speaker 1: I liked how cartoonishly stupid it was, like it felt
- 54:01Speaker 1: like a Saturday Morning cartoon turned live action movie. Yes
- 54:05Speaker 1: it is.
- 54:06Speaker 4: It is kind of like a live action movie like
- 54:09Speaker 4: Power Rangers without the morphine.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
- 54:14Speaker 3: Actually, yeah, Power Rangers quality level of filmmaking for sure.
- 54:19Speaker 2: It's so interesting to me because they extrapolated so much
- 54:22Speaker 2: from a video game that has zero plot, zero real
- 54:26Speaker 2: true substance. I mean, I know, like it pioneered a
- 54:29Speaker 2: lot in the beat him up genre, but from what
- 54:31Speaker 2: I understand, Double Dragon won as a video game pretty
- 54:35Speaker 2: pretty plain, pretty pretty cut and dry.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:38Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's kidnapped. Now you got to beat some
- 54:40Speaker 3: guys up to get her back. Like, I mean, it's
- 54:42Speaker 3: the tried and true plot for a beat them up? Like,
- 54:45Speaker 3: what more excuse does a does a eight year old
- 54:48Speaker 3: boy need than his imaginary girlfriend getting kidnapped.
- 54:51Speaker 2: For sure.
- 54:52Speaker 1: It's that.
- 54:52Speaker 2: It's that classic adio thing you're you know, she's in
- 54:54Speaker 2: another castle situation and.
- 54:56Speaker 4: You know their assholes because they just for as far
- 54:59Speaker 4: as goes they walk up, punch her in the stomach
- 55:02Speaker 4: and just fire man carry her off. You know who
- 55:06Speaker 4: the bad guys are from the beginning.
- 55:07Speaker 1: Well, because you would never punch a woman. I eat
- 55:10Speaker 1: a second boss in the second level.
- 55:12Speaker 3: Unless she's wearing a bikini and has a whip, she's.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Free game for beating up.
- 55:18Speaker 4: And her name's Linda.
- 55:19Speaker 1: Come on, she was the Karen of the times. Well,
- 55:23Speaker 1: we're getting into the game here. We spoiling some things.
- 55:26Speaker 3: No, whoops, I'm not familiar with this that yet.
- 55:30Speaker 1: Yes, so we have a mini game that you is
- 55:32Speaker 1: completely new and original, not stolen from the gate Leaper's
- 55:35Speaker 1: main feeds Pandemonium games. But we're gonna do a little
- 55:38Speaker 1: minigame here. Jason and I are going to give you
- 55:39Speaker 1: each a list of five villains from the Double Dragon games.
- 55:42Speaker 1: It's your job to spot the real versus the fake.
- 55:45Speaker 1: You'll name the correct films one at a time, a
- 55:47Speaker 1: max of three so for three points per round. But
- 55:49Speaker 1: as soon as you get a wrong one, you're frozen
- 55:51Speaker 1: out of the list, and you forfeit all points of.
- 55:53Speaker 2: That round you missed out on, and you guys don't
- 55:55Speaker 2: have an advantage by knowing prior villains and answers at all.
- 56:02Speaker 1: Yes, so I did rearrange the list to try to
- 56:05Speaker 1: make the more tricky. Hopefully the tricks from last round
- 56:08Speaker 1: stick and the sudden magical knowledge you had previously doesn't
- 56:11Speaker 1: come back to haunt me.
- 56:13Speaker 3: I'm sure John's memory is better than mine.
- 56:14Speaker 4: So I was gonna say, like the movie, I think
- 56:17Speaker 4: I've already forgotten on the last record. I remember we
- 56:20Speaker 4: had a good time.
- 56:23Speaker 1: It's a great record. It was a great time. We
- 56:25Speaker 1: had a really good time exactly. No complaints with my buddies,
- 56:30Speaker 1: just nothing else. Okay, I'm gonna give John the first
- 56:36Speaker 1: list of names. Your first five villains are Dark Queen,
- 56:41Speaker 1: Dark Hand, a Bobo Roper, and the Germ.
- 56:46Speaker 4: Okay ABOVEO for sure that that's that's the gimme.
- 56:51Speaker 1: Yeah, well give there, there's your gimme.
- 56:52Speaker 2: He has a crazy arc in this movie.
- 56:55Speaker 4: S oh geez.
- 56:57Speaker 1: Yeah, he's both his and his design.
- 57:00Speaker 4: Yeah, Like, I mean, he's pretty grotesque in the game. Anyway,
- 57:04Speaker 4: but like, oh yeah, the movie steps it up. All right,
- 57:07Speaker 4: let's see what what was the one between a Bobo
- 57:11Speaker 4: and the germ Roper?
- 57:13Speaker 1: So you have Dark Queen, Dark Hand, Roper and the Germ.
- 57:18Speaker 4: I'm gonna go the Germ.
- 57:20Speaker 1: Okay, you're frozen out of the list because I made
- 57:22Speaker 1: the one up. Come on, this sucks. You had two
- 57:27Speaker 1: chances and you still bummed it. I know you're also
- 57:30Speaker 1: I realized when I shuffled it, I didn't really like
- 57:32Speaker 1: take super good attention to some of the names. I
- 57:34Speaker 1: like that Dark Queen and Dark Hand I'll put together.
- 57:36Speaker 1: But Dark Queen is real, as is Roper.
- 57:39Speaker 4: Oh I felt good about Roper, but yeah, dark.
- 57:43Speaker 1: Followed the one.
- 57:45Speaker 4: There you go.
- 57:46Speaker 1: I never do, Jason. I'll let you take away the
- 57:49Speaker 1: next list for Ben Sick.
- 57:52Speaker 2: I also like this pairing because I love that we
- 57:55Speaker 2: have just two buds with our two butts. So I'm
- 57:58Speaker 2: gonna I'm gonna take Ben here. All right, Ben, your
- 58:00Speaker 2: list is Chains of a Z, Willie, Jeff, the Fangs,
- 58:09Speaker 2: and shadow Master.
- 58:10Speaker 3: Okay, well shadow Master for sure, yes, sir, that is correct.
- 58:15Speaker 1: There you go. That's to give me.
- 58:17Speaker 3: This game loves to give people completely ordinary names. So
- 58:21Speaker 3: I'm gonna go uh, I'll go with Willy.
- 58:26Speaker 1: Willy is also correct. There you got. You got one
- 58:28Speaker 1: more reel one of the lists. Can you find him?
- 58:30Speaker 1: What were the other three?
- 58:31Speaker 3: You've got chains, Jeff and the fangs left the fangs
- 58:38Speaker 3: that's plural, that's kind of weird. I'll go with Jeff
- 58:43Speaker 3: just because that name pops up a.
- 58:44Speaker 2: Lot in God, damn, that's three for three, my god.
- 58:48Speaker 2: The double name normal name situation.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Yeah, that was I really thought he was gonna give
- 58:54Speaker 1: us like one of the normal names, be like, hey,
- 58:55Speaker 1: can't be both of them, and then take something stupid
- 58:58Speaker 1: like the fangs chains.
- 59:00Speaker 3: Too generically late eighties early.
- 59:02Speaker 1: Nineties, which.
- 59:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I was gonna say, is that above or below
- 59:08Speaker 2: this this franchise to do that then to be generically
- 59:12Speaker 2: eighties just two martial arts buds fighting thugs.
- 59:17Speaker 3: Well, my guess is a bunch of the like the
- 59:19Speaker 3: Japanese developers just pulled out an English phone book, Willie
- 59:25Speaker 3: got it.
- 59:26Speaker 1: We've seen what Nintendo does with like English names. We've
- 59:29Speaker 1: seen that. We've all seen that meme from the baseball games.
- 59:31Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's that's the Thing's amazing, Like a D
- 59:35Speaker 3: and D characterist for me.
- 59:36Speaker 1: Now I've used them for D and D before.
- 59:39Speaker 3: They're fucking great.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Oh my god, Jason was gonna say, just to keep
- 59:43Speaker 1: things back and forth, you want to give the next
- 59:45Speaker 1: list to John?
- 59:46Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely, all right, John, your list
- 59:50Speaker 2: is ice Pick, Sickle, Katana, Big Greg, and Jimmy.
- 59:59Speaker 4: Oh boy, and these are just villains.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: These are yeah, apparently.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: Okay, there can't be. There can't be a good and
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: a bad Jimmy and there Oh wait, in the first
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: game they weren't named Billy and Jimmy yet, were they?
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: They were. Okay, I don't know. All of these sounds
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: so familiar. Mm okay, I'm gonna go, man, I'm risking
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: shooting myself on the foot right right off the bat.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: But for some reason, Big Reg is calling out to me.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Greg would call out to you. I think that was
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: an answer from the last time we recorded, but it
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: was a fake answer.
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: We've heard all these names before, so if it's vaguely familiar,
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: it could be because we.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: That's part of why I kept them was which one
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: will stick because they're fat? Is they're real?
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: Because I was thinking the same thing, John.
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: Yeah, we did a lot better last time. Jeez, we
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: sound like idiots when we're actually being recorded. You sound great, man.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: The real ones were ice Pick Sickle and Jimmy was
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: a villain. We discussed this in the original game. I
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: think you play as Billy and then the enemy turns
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: out to be Jimmy in disguise.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Or something like that.
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: I think you were the one that brought that up
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: last time too.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: Me.
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: I didn't. I don't think that's true. I don't think
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: I ever knew that.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure last round too, someone got it wrong
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: when it was the same reason get to give. So
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: that was the part of why I wanted to keep
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: you such a fun fact, but also like maybe they'll
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: remember this time. Speaking of credit, I'm going to give
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Ben his last list, and looking at the scoreboard, you've
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: got a pretty lenient here, Ben. This doesn't count towards
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: stat leapers.
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: That's the only reason I'm phoning it in.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: I bet your list is countdown Night Wind, Linda Seca
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: and Tendo.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: Okay, well, Linda, for sure, I legit did not know
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: that Linda was on this list. And that's hilarious that
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: John gave us Ben. That's fucking awesome.
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: I remember something about Tendo from the last time we
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: did this and thinking like Nintendo, maybe they just did
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: that blah blah, but I don't remember if it was
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: right or not.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: So was it? Was it the game's creators or this
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: game's creator being witty exactly? In many ways, this record
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: is just like the last we're seeing. We're seeing a
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: few weeks could really uh hamper the memories.
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: So I'm gonna go with it. I remember something about Tendo,
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: but I don't remember what it was.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: Look at John, John is John is giving all the
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: visual cues that that is.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: Wrong and John would be correct. For once, did you
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: remember that from last round? Or yeah?
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: That that one once? Once it popped up. That one
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: stuck out very clearly as to whether or not it
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: was real.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Yeah, for me, it was the again behind the curtains
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: of making a game. It was one of the characters
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: the correct answers is Seca, which sounded like Sega. So
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: I was like, let me give one that sounds like Nintendo,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: just to make it balance. Now, all right, and your
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: your last one was countdown to the clock. That is
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: just a villain for some reason.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: It's just a clock because time kills us all. It
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: is probably what they were saying.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Yeah, there real deep meaning in these games that we
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: didn't understand as eight year old boy saving our girlfriend
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: from people.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: I didn't pick that theme up in the in the
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: movie though.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: The saving girlfriends or the time will kill us all.
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: I didn't quite touch that.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: I didn't see the deep meaning there. I think it's
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: when the village people came in. Essentially people represent time. Yeah,
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: in this essay I will explain.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: That's what I remember about this movie. But actually, in
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: this essay, I will explain that the final score was
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: one point for John and four points for then, making
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: Ben the de facto winner. I forget who won last time. Honestly,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: I want to scroll back up. I didn't delete my notes.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: It doesn't matter.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: Right now, it doesn't matter because it didn't matter.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: There you go, it was a non cannon win.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Well, Ben and John, thank you so much for joining
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: us for another round of this game. Genuinely, it was
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: an honor having you back again and getting to revisit
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: this little game to see if the results would be different.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: And they were slightly different. I think I can't remember
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: the old scores, and that doesn't matter for me, you
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: want to let people know where they can find you,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: Ben does. Yeah.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: Yeah, we have a bunch of episodes of gig Exploration,
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: the podcast that still exists on the internet that you
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: can go and listen to, so if you haven't listened
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: to them, check them out. I don't think we ever
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: did one on Double Dragon, but we did a bunch
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: of other Anis games and then we've got space out
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: of these. Number three is a little difficult to get
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: your hands on right now because the Kickstarter is closed
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: and it's not available to the publiclet so if you
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: miss that, you gotta.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: Have to wait.
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: But one and two are out there. We have the
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: comic books in hand now too, so they'll be mailing
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: out to anyone who did back to Kickstarter, and then
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: I think around March will release the the book to
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: the general public.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: So yeah, definitely keep in line for that. It's a
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: sick ass comic. I'm getting decoder rings in the mail
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: and I'm super stoked. And if you missed the kickstart
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: for number three, just wait until issue four. We'll be
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: putting that on the main gate Leapers feed whenever that
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: does come, and it'll be awesome and it'll be sick
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: and you can get super cool Kickstar rewards, like putting
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: yourself in a comic book is a Kickstarter reward, and
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: that's awesome. Yeah, drawn by John Oh my god, could
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: not be a better reward.
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: It would be really obvious. If I drew you into the.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: I'd pay extra for it.
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: Honestly, you should give that option, except that one. Rather
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: than your commissions being cheaper than mine, we should make
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: yours more expensive.
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: But also so extra incentive for the listeners to this
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: feed is Jason did a variant cover for us on
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: this one.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: I forgot.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: I did it was awesome. Thanks so much, guys for
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: letting me be a part of your world.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: Thank you and thank you both for joining us for
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: a lovely game and a little extra fun, more so
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: than we had planned initially.
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: Yeah, let's do this again sometime. Double Dragon three.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: That brings us to the end of our show. We
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: hope you enjoyed us at least more than the film
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: we discussed.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: That concludes another level in our journey through the history
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: of video game movies. Whether your thumbs on the joystick
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: oiler mote, thanks for joining us on the couch here
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: at press play. If you join this content. See us
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: on the main feed of gate Leapers, where you can
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: see Drew and I the Beef Cheek Bros. On the
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: game show of Fandomodium. That's the main feed there. You
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: can also see Matt Nadra every month with bonus round.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: I'm not really on social media, Drew, but where people
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: can people find to you?
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: Well, you can find me at box on Blue Sky,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: Instagram and threads, as well as the news pertaining to
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: the shows in general at gately Prints all the same platforms. Now,
