- 0:56Welcome back to Mini Tech Scroll everyone.
- 0:58I hope you had a lovely week since I last spoke to you guys.
- 1:02I have spent the first half of this week deep in all the White
- 1:07Lotus Reddit threads since the finale so I am very curious to
- 1:11hear if you guys were watching and if you had any thoughts so
- 1:14please let me know if you are. I just love talking about this
- 1:17season. Also, Speaking of Reddit, I just
- 1:20want to say that I am literally always sleuthing through that
- 1:23platform to find any of you guys who have recommended Infinite
- 1:27Scroll and Mini Scroll on various podcast recommendation
- 1:31threads, so that is always much appreciated by me.
- 1:34We also loved when one of you guys created the subreddit for
- 1:37the Infinite Scroll podcast, although I will say there hasn't
- 1:41been so much discourse in there yet, but I love whenever someone
- 1:45leaves a nice comment in there. Other than that, Please remember
- 1:49to rate, review and subscribe to Infinite Scroll.
- 1:53We are trying to get one KA Spotify star reviews.
- 1:56We are still on that journey and it's a long one.
- 1:58But anyway, let's get into the content for this week.
- 2:01So the first story I wanted to quickly touch on today
- 2:04definitely feels a little bit random in the context of this
- 2:07episode, but I am trying to include something a little bit
- 2:10fun and less depressing each week.
- 2:13So with that being said, I wanted to touch on the response
- 2:16to the Minecraft movie that recently came out.
- 2:19I will just say to begin, I haven't seen the movie so this
- 2:22isn't going to be review or anything.
- 2:24I also didn't want to include any spoilers or too much about
- 2:28the plot in case you guys were infested.
- 2:30But the movie has honestly made such waves in the Internet
- 2:33culture and film space, so I didn't want to ignore this
- 2:36entirely. But let's start from the
- 2:38beginning. So a Minecraft movie was
- 2:40officially released last week and has already been super,
- 2:43super successful. According to The Hollywood
- 2:46Reporter, the film has broken box office records, opening with
- 2:49160 million domestically in the US and 313 million globally.
- 2:56It is now the most successful video game adaptation film,
- 3:00beating out the Super Mario Bros Movie And as the best selling
- 3:04video game of all time, which I actually didn't realize, it has
- 3:07over 300 million sales and over 140 million players per month.
- 3:11It is honestly no surprise that this movie did well, but there
- 3:14were also such high expectations.
- 3:17The movie version had also been in development for quite a
- 3:20while, I've read since 2014, but it only started shooting last
- 3:24year, which is 10 years later. So the premise of the movie
- 3:28though is that four people end up in the Minecraft overwhelmed
- 3:31after going through a portal. Obviously, the cast is extremely
- 3:36star-studded with the likes of Jason Momoa, who is obviously
- 3:39Trisha Paytas's one true love, Jack Black, and even Jennifer
- 3:43Coolidge appears. But from what I've read about
- 3:45the film, it's not the plot that has really gotten people
- 3:48invested in the film. It's actually the cinematic
- 3:51atmosphere and the viewing experience.
- 3:53From what I've seen on TikTok and also just general reporting
- 3:56about the film, it has been very fun for those attending with
- 4:00many viewers, mostly teenagers and children, yelling out the
- 4:04memeable lines that were included in the trailer.
- 4:07It's honestly giving cult classic already.
- 4:10I'm sure we've all heard of those participatory movies like
- 4:13The Rocky Horror Picture Show or even The Room.
- 4:16If you know, you know, but they have all built in traditions.
- 4:21While viewing the film, my immediate thought after reading
- 4:24about the success of a Minecraft movie was I think that this
- 4:28movie shows just how adaptable Internet culture and gaming can
- 4:32be in what is typically considered mainstream spaces,
- 4:35reinforcing just how important the digital world is to Gen.
- 4:39Z and especially Gen. Alpha.
- 4:41But I'm sure I feel listening to this podcast, you are well
- 4:43aware. I don't know why, but my
- 4:45immediate thought as well was about the Skippity toilet movie
- 4:48and TV franchise that was coming up.
- 4:51I know this is a bit different, but I kind of think this bodes
- 4:54well, especially if the production can lean into the
- 4:57Skippity law. Sorry, I just can't take myself
- 5:01seriously. I can't believe I'm talking
- 5:02about this on the podcast, but this is definitely the place to
- 5:05do it. And also, we are Skippity toilet
- 5:09enthusiasts here at Infinite Scroll.
- 5:12Last year we had a meme expert on to discuss all the hidden
- 5:16meanings behind Skippity toilet and just how powerful, for lack
- 5:20of a better word, that series actually is.
- 5:22But I was also listening to to the Big Picture podcast on my
- 5:26way in to work this morning and they were talking about the
- 5:30success of the Minecraft movie and had some pretty interesting
- 5:32points that I think relates to these video game and Internet
- 5:37culture film adaptations. They first noted that kids
- 5:41movies over the past few years haven't actually been specific
- 5:44to this generation. Like even the Sonic movie and
- 5:47the Super Mario Bros have roots in older generations where
- 5:50Minecraft is uniquely Gen. Z and Gen.
- 5:53Alpha. The host described this as
- 5:55returning kids movies to kids, which I thought was so true.
- 5:59And I think the Skippity toilet movie and perhaps other video
- 6:03game adaptations can definitely fall into this category for
- 6:06sure. But if any of you have seen the
- 6:08movie, please sound out in the comments.
- 6:11I want to know did you like it? Was a good did the cinematic
- 6:15atmosphere live up to the high? I am curious.
- 6:17OK so my next story as I alluded to last week is a quick update
- 6:22on the TikTok ban in the United States and how it has been
- 6:25extended. Once again, this is a bit of a
- 6:27whiplash from the last story, but one thing about me is that I
- 6:31have range. So let's just get into this.
- 6:33But I will just say as a preface, I am honestly tired of
- 6:37covering this. I feel like how Lauren feels
- 6:39whenever she has to cover Mr. Beast.
- 6:40I feel like you are probably all sick of hearing about it, but I
- 6:44still think it is a big tech news piece.
- 6:47So with that being said, I don't want to go into all the details
- 6:49of what has gone down, but as a quick reminder, TikTok has been
- 6:53facing a potential nationwide ban in the US for what feels
- 6:56like decades at this point. Talk about the ban has been
- 6:59around since 2020, but it obviously went up a notch in
- 7:042024 when a bill was signed into law in April which required Byte
- 7:08Dance to divest from TikTok or face a ban in the United States.
- 7:12As we all know, no deal was made by the deadline, which was
- 7:15January 19th. Since then, when Trump took
- 7:18office, he issued an executive order to delay the enforcement
- 7:21of the ban for an extra 75 days, hoping that his administration
- 7:25would be able to strike a deal with Byte Dance.
- 7:28There have been reports that there are major companies and
- 7:30he's in the running to help support Byte Dance from TikTok,
- 7:33namely Amazon and Oracle. But obviously no official deal
- 7:37has been made yet. And that was the problem because
- 7:40the extension expired on April 5th.
- 7:42But over the weekend, Trump took to Truth Social to share that he
- 7:46would be extending the deadline writing quote.
- 7:48My administration has been working very hard on a deal to
- 7:51save TikTok and we have made tremendous progress.
- 7:55I can't with how often Trump says tremendous, but let's get
- 7:58on with his post. The deal requires more work to
- 8:01ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I'm
- 8:05signing an executive order to keep TikTok up and running for
- 8:07an additional 75 days. We hope to continue working in
- 8:12good faith with China, who I understand are not very happy
- 8:15about our reciprocal tariffs. And then he kind of talks about
- 8:18the tariffs for a little bit before saying that quote, we do
- 8:21not want TikTok to go dark. We look forward to working with
- 8:24TikTok in China to close the deal.
- 8:26As with many of the actions taken by the Trump presidency so
- 8:30far, there has been a little bit of pushback.
- 8:33The first executive order was pretty controversial in and of
- 8:36itself because the ban had been passed through Congress.
- 8:39So continuing with that and allowing for another extension,
- 8:44Trump continuing to move unilaterally has been a cause
- 8:48for concern for lawmakers. As far as how American uses a
- 8:52feeling about the ban, I am sure many of them are sick of hearing
- 8:55about it. But recent polling from the Pew
- 8:57Research Center found that, quote, public support for a
- 9:00TikTok ban now stands at 34% among US adults.
- 9:04That's down from 50% in March 2023.
- 9:06I really don't know how long this will go on for, and I'm
- 9:09kind of in two minds about it. There is a possibility that the
- 9:12Trump administration will just continue to extend the extension
- 9:17even though much of this is legally dubious.
- 9:20Like I said in I think my second episode of a mini scroll, there
- 9:23definitely are benefits for Trump being seen as the quote UN
- 9:26quote savior of TikTok and using this platform to spread his
- 9:30message. But as far as deal making
- 9:32prospects, I don't know how much tariffs will play into the
- 9:35willingness of Bite Dance as a Chinese owned company to
- 9:38negotiate. I've actually seen reports, I
- 9:40can't remember where it was from, but I'll include it on the
- 9:44screen and in the description if I find the article that the
- 9:47latest TikTok deal on the table was likely to be supported by
- 9:51the Chinese government in exchange for tariff relief.
- 9:54So if that is the case, in the worst case scenario, I could see
- 9:58TikTok eventually going offline in the US because of the
- 10:01tariffs. But I could also see Trump
- 10:04playing it off as a way to assert dominance over China.
- 10:07But also, I don't know how much longer TikTok will remain a
- 10:10priority given that the likelihood of a recession is
- 10:13seemingly increasing day by day. The vibes are good.
- 10:17Love it. Continuing with the political
- 10:20vibe, I guess my last story for today is quite concerning, and
- 10:24that is that YouTube has reportedly quietly removed
- 10:27gender identity from hate speech policy from what I've seen.
- 10:30This was first reported by Taylor Lorenz for her Sub Stack
- 10:33Publication user mag. In the piece, she noted that
- 10:36this went down shortly after Trump took office, as she
- 10:39explained. Means quote YouTube doesn't
- 10:41allow hate speech towards a number of groups.
- 10:43Content that promotes violence or hatred towards users over
- 10:46their race, nationality, religion, disability, or veteran
- 10:49status is explicitly barred. Hate speech against someone's
- 10:52quote, gender identity and expression was also once barred,
- 10:55but that phrase has since been removed.
- 10:57According to a YouTube spokesperson cited in the
- 11:00article, the removal of gender identity and expression from the
- 11:03policy was just part of edits to the copy on the web page.
- 11:08They maintained that this policy would still be enforced.
- 11:11As Lorenz explains, quote, hate speech towards someone over
- 11:14their sex, gender or sexual orientation is still bad.
- 11:18However, critics say that gender is very different than gender
- 11:21identity and expression. Obviously this vague language
- 11:24and excuse comes at a time when there is more and more vitriol
- 11:29and hatred directed towards trans people.
- 11:31I mean, Trump from the beginning of his administration proclaimed
- 11:34that his administration only recognizes 2 biological sexes
- 11:38and has obviously continuously worked to scrap DEI policies as
- 11:44a result. This is essentially given the
- 11:46green light for transphobia, a type of discrimination that
- 11:49we've honestly been seeing steadily increase in the United
- 11:52States and around the world over the past few years.
- 11:56In the US specifically, we've obviously seen this sentiment in
- 11:59legislation around all the drag bans, which is what many kind of
- 12:03see as a front for anti trans hatred, violence and
- 12:07discrimination. Recently we've also seen more
- 12:09and more public figures speak out against this increasing
- 12:12transphobia. But I will say they are often
- 12:15trans people themselves. But there are two notable
- 12:18examples of public figures who I think have recently come forward
- 12:21against the government's anti trans approach.
- 12:24One of them is Hunter Schaeffer. She recently took to TikTok to
- 12:28explain that her passport had been reissued and the new
- 12:31passport said that Hunter was a male, which is obviously a
- 12:34consequence of policies implemented during the current
- 12:37Trump administration. This TikTok was very well
- 12:40received, and I actually included an article in the sub
- 12:43stack a couple weeks ago talking about why that was the case.
- 12:46And what the author claimed was so successful about Hunter's
- 12:49approach was that she didn't really call in her audience to
- 12:51do anything. She just kind of shared her
- 12:54experience showing how there were real effects to what is
- 12:58going on in the government. On top of this, I think Hunter's
- 13:01approach was also well received because she was very upfront
- 13:04about her privilege as a white famous trans person.
- 13:08Aside from Hunter, there was also Elon Musk's daughter Vivian
- 13:12Jenna Wilson, who is also a trans woman.
- 13:15But she spoke out publicly against her father and the
- 13:18administration's anti trans policy in her recent viral Teen
- 13:23Vogue profile. Anyway, with the YouTube
- 13:26changes, this is obviously very very upsetting and concerning
- 13:29and I don't understand why if hate speech against gender
- 13:32identity and expression violates community guidelines, why it
- 13:36wouldn't just say that? Unless this was some sort of
- 13:39cheap attempt at trying to capitalize on the political
- 13:42zeitgeist and norms at the moment.
- 13:43But at the end of the day, the entire concept and validity of
- 13:47protecting against hate speech and discrimination online falls
- 13:51kind of a part in my opinion. If a platform essentially goes
- 13:54ahead and decides that it will allow vitriol against one
- 13:58specific group, that just completely undermines the
- 14:01credibility of this. But anyway, that is a little bit
- 14:04of a sad and concerning story to end on, so I am sorry about
- 14:08that. I am glad I included the
- 14:10Minecraft story at the top of this episode to have a little
- 14:13bit of fun, but that is everything from me today.
- 14:17Lauren will chat to you tomorrow and also a new episode of High
- 14:21Stakes will be out. But other than that, I will
- 14:24speak to you next week and thanks for listening.
- 14:27Hi.
