- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. Education Minister Paul Dinh says he's appalled
- 0:10Speaker 2: by video showing an altercation between students at a school
- 0:14Speaker 2: in Bay Roberts. RCMP say they have identified the victim
- 0:18Speaker 2: in the video and both police and the school are
- 0:22Speaker 2: supporting him. In the meantime, the incident is under investigation
- 0:26Speaker 2: and police say an update will be provided when appropriate.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Minister Dinh says the video is very upsetting.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Horrendous to see that happening. We've been doing a lot
- 0:36Speaker 3: of work on safe and caring schools, working with our
- 0:38Speaker 3: different stakeholders, and to see that, it's just very upsetting.
- 0:45Speaker 3: But I understand the authorities, proper authorities, are looking into that,
- 0:48Speaker 3: so hopefully they'll find an answer to that.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Meanwhile, a rally in support of the victim is planned
- 0:54Speaker 2: for Bay Roberts later today. RCMP are aware of the
- 0:58Speaker 2: rally and will have the appropriate resources on site to
- 1:01Speaker 2: ensure the safety of students, staff, parents, and the general public.
- 1:07Speaker 2: The Privacy Commissioner's Office has launched a video series aimed
- 1:10Speaker 2: at getting young people to pause and think critically about
- 1:13Speaker 2: their online activities before sharing personal information. Sarah, hey, got
- 1:20Speaker 2: your latte there?
- 1:21Speaker 4: Oat milk.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Just the way you like it.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Yeah, um, do I know you?
- 1:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we're friends on all the socials. You share
- 1:30Speaker 1: your location on there. And you're here every Wednesday around 4.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Anyways, I'll see you later. Have a safe walk home.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Number 57, right?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Think Digital was put together based on conversations with young
- 1:45Speaker 2: people about their experiences online, their privacy concerns, and the
- 1:49Speaker 2: challenges they face when sharing information. The office says the
- 1:53Speaker 2: information provided by young people helped to inform the topics
- 1:57Speaker 2: and scenarios featured in the series. The Office of the
- 2:00Speaker 2: Privacy Commissioner is encouraging people to view the series and
- 2:04Speaker 2: discuss it with their families. Stats Canada says the country's
- 2:09Speaker 2: fertility rate in 2025 remained at the all-time low recorded
- 2:13Speaker 2: the previous year, just 1.26 children per woman. Linda Swain reports.
- 2:20Speaker 4: The majority of Canadian provinces and territories recorded all-time low
- 2:24Speaker 4: total fertility rates, including Newfoundland and Labrador, at 1.08. Nationally,
- 2:30Speaker 4: the average age of mothers at childbirth has been continually
- 2:33Speaker 4: increasing for nearly five decades. Last year, the average age
- 2:37Speaker 4: reached a new high of 31.9 years. That's up from 26.7
- 2:42Speaker 4: years in 1976. The overall long-term decline in fertility is
- 2:47Speaker 4: not unique to Canada. In 2025, among 20 selected high-income countries,
- 2:52Speaker 4: Canada had the seventh lowest rate. The United States, at 1.57
- 2:56Speaker 4: children per woman, had the highest, followed by Iceland and
- 2:59Speaker 4: France at 1.56 children per woman each.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Today marks four years since Hurricane Fiona slammed into the
- 3:08Speaker 2: southwest coast of the island, causing widespread destruction and claiming
- 3:12Speaker 2: the life of 70-year-old Thelma Lehman, whose home was pulled
- 3:16Speaker 2: into the water by powerful storm surge. The storm struck
- 3:20Speaker 2: the area hard, destroying or heavily damaging some 150 homes.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Area MHA Michael King says it's a somber time for
- 3:29Speaker 2: the town of Portabasque as they remember what was lost.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Certainly four years later, we still think about that. I'm
- 3:35Speaker 1: certainly thinking of the friends and family of the individual
- 3:38Speaker 1: that was lost here. I know that she was a
- 3:40Speaker 1: very valued member of the community. And that event certainly
- 3:44Speaker 1: changed our community forever. But certainly the people here have
- 3:47Speaker 1: always been resilient since that event.
- 3:49Speaker 2: King says despite the destruction, he recalls the way in
- 3:52Speaker 2: which people came together to do what they could to help.
- 3:55Speaker 1: You know, I think back to the time I was here.
- 3:58Speaker 1: in the district, and everybody just came together, whether it
- 4:01Speaker 1: was the Canadian Armed Forces, the governments, organizations, everyday people,
- 4:06Speaker 1: in a true Newfoundland and Labrador fashion, put up their
- 4:08Speaker 1: hands and said, how can we help? How can we
- 4:10Speaker 1: be there to support you? So four years later, the
- 4:13Speaker 1: event still stings, still sits with us all, but we
- 4:17Speaker 1: remember the good parts as well.
- 4:19Speaker 2: The CB Star says the entire hockey community in Conception
- 4:22Speaker 2: Bay North is saddened by the recent passing of Joe Hunt. Hunt,
- 4:27Speaker 2: a former defenseman with the CBs, was on the Herter
- 4:30Speaker 2: Memorial Trophy winning team in 1967 and was a member
- 4:34Speaker 2: of several teams from Harbor Grace that won championships in
- 4:37Speaker 2: the CBN League in the 1970s. Hunt also served as
- 4:41Speaker 2: a minor hockey coach, leading teams to several provincial championships.
- 4:47Speaker 2: A Tennessee judge has granted Dolly Parton's estate a temporary
- 4:50Speaker 2: restraining order against her nephew, Brian Seaver, and his private
- 4:54Speaker 2: security company. The estate alleges Seaver made repeated threats against
- 4:59Speaker 2: the business and demanded payment. with court documents citing concerns
- 5:03Speaker 2: about his claimed access to weapons and experience with violence.
- 5:07Speaker 2: The order bars Seaver and Squadron Augmented Protection Services from
- 5:11Speaker 2: entering the estate's property or coming within 305 meters of
- 5:15Speaker 2: its employees, lawyers, and business partners. That's your news. I'm
- 5:20Speaker 2: Sarah Strickland.
