Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome to a special episode of the Retail podcast
- 0:03live at NRS. I'm here with Fabric actually
- 0:07one of the major sponsors on on the lanyard.
- 0:09You can see them all around the show, privileged enough to be
- 0:13joined by Mike Micucci, CEO of Fabric.
- 0:16Thank you so much Mike for giving up your.
- 0:17Time pleasure. I'm surprised you've got a voice
- 0:19because now that you've been talking to your customers.
- 0:23Well, hey, it's I've been practising.
- 0:25How about that? So listen, for those who don't
- 0:28know about Fabric, don't mind doing two things for me, he just
- 0:32give us a little bit of background about you how you
- 0:35ended up at Fabric. We're sort of journey here and
- 0:37then maybe focusing on Fabric. Well, yeah.
- 0:39Well, first again thank you Alex for the opportunity and it's
- 0:42been a wonderful NRF here. We we clearly are are being
- 0:46being present that are at Interop.
- 0:49I've been the CEO here about five months now.
- 0:53I'm relatively new to the company.
- 0:55What attracted me, the company was just the amazing platform
- 0:59technology and forward-looking vision as the commerce world's
- 1:03rapidly evolving with the app and things like AI.
- 1:06Yeah, prior to this I was a long time Salesforce executive and I
- 1:10was the CEO of Salesforce commerce father for many years.
- 1:14OK. And it's been an absolute
- 1:16privilege feedback in the commerce world working on
- 1:20leading cutting edge technology and helping companies
- 1:23revolution. So what do you find?
- 1:25So over the last three days, we're coming up obviously to the
- 1:29end of the third day. What's been the thing that's
- 1:31been the top of mind of executives who are coming to see
- 1:35you? Yes.
- 1:36Top of mind is how can they drive fast return on their
- 1:41technology. But you, I mean, companies
- 1:44globally have poor a tonne of money and the technology because
- 1:48of coke, right? And there's quite a bit of
- 1:50hangover on digesting that. So as they look at say, how do
- 1:55we take those investments but turn those into real world
- 1:58conversion results and AOV results and basically get a
- 2:01superior TCO, that's what's top of their mind.
- 2:04Go ahead, help me get to market really quick and realise results
- 2:08And if we can do that, this is not a project we're looking.
- 2:11At, Yeah. And then in terms of customers,
- 2:14they obviously being new, you must have spent the first you
- 2:18know whatever just focused on customer, customer meeting your
- 2:21customers. Yes, what's been an interesting
- 2:23because obviously you come from Salesforce, what's an
- 2:25interesting outcome that you were like, oh, you were
- 2:28surprised by and your customers from their journey of working
- 2:32with Fabric? Here is where I, and this is
- 2:35maybe my call this a humble bride, but we came off a holiday
- 2:39with two things. First of all, 0.
- 2:43Downtime. Yeah.
- 2:44And you know, look, holiday is like the Super Bowl, American
- 2:47term, Super Bowl of the commerce world.
- 2:50Yeah. And you're all hands on deck.
- 2:52You've got, you've been preparing for months.
- 2:54You got everybody there and we went through this seamless.
- 2:57Y'all. This is the beauty of having a
- 3:00built a new stack on, you know, all cloud services on the
- 3:05hyperscalers, in this case Amazon, so that we can scale up.
- 3:08Yep. Well, we need to and we can
- 3:10scale down as the demand, you know, as you go post holiday.
- 3:14Yeah, so 10 issues. That was phenomenal.
- 3:18That makes me breathe easier, makes my customers breathe
- 3:20easier. Stability is first and foremost
- 3:23in customer experience. Number two was just increasing
- 3:26conversion. We saw our investors on average
- 3:30at over 20% year over year conversion and I was like wow.
- 3:34And I asked him a lot about that and there was, it wasn't just
- 3:36one thing at a combination. One, they had just great
- 3:43performance. We have lightning fast API
- 3:45speeds. So that meant that when the
- 3:47shopping people were shopping on our product, they were seeing
- 3:52just really good response rates and we know speed helps improve
- 3:57conversion. It's a flat out industry that
- 4:00everybody every 30% increase in performance, yeah, you see
- 4:05almost up to a 10% increase. So just getting speed and
- 4:10stability, those sound like obvious, but they're the basics,
- 4:12like who wants to shop on a slow place.
- 4:14Yeah, right, where you know things are buggy or what others
- 4:18is getting them a bit back using the back end of our services,
- 4:21things like inventory availability so that you know
- 4:24when you get to a product detail page, you can see what inventory
- 4:28is available, you can reserve that inventory.
- 4:30If it's a backward situation, you give them offer, you can see
- 4:33if there's any availability in the region at your physical
- 4:36store. So now it's not just what's in
- 4:39your distribution centre, but any of the stores all that
- 4:41becomes instantly available. Yeah that helped our customers
- 4:45using best in class services or they didn't even have to swap
- 4:49out the app or the head. Yeah.
- 4:51They just stitched in the services that were helping
- 4:54unlock on incremental going. So those were the things that
- 4:58really surprised me was I knew we were going to do well.
- 5:03I didn't expect to do this well. Yeah.
- 5:05And so NRF here we are talking about through the lens of this
- 5:10customer success, how we can help our customers on that
- 5:13journey. This NRF, we announced our new
- 5:15order management capability. We've built it over the last
- 5:18year with a handful of key design customers.
- 5:21Yeah, it was designed to drive omnichannel retail experience,
- 5:25which is what everybody says. But let me just take a yeah,
- 5:28yeah, yeah. On COVID.
- 5:29Yeah. During COVID, where did all the
- 5:31money go? It went into digital cause
- 5:33nobody could go anywhere. Yeah, alright, we we're all
- 5:35we're out of that. You know we're out of that.
- 5:38We still have issues, but people are back in the source.
- 5:41Yeah. Where are people investing?
- 5:43They're investing in the physical, physical experience.
- 5:45Yeah, but as consumers what do we want?
- 5:48We still want that kind of flexibility on a digital
- 5:52experience, but we also want it when we in the store being, hey,
- 5:55I want to see if inventory is available that my size, our
- 5:58availability or whatever is not there.
- 6:00Can I talk to somebody quickly reserve it, can I ship from
- 6:02store and pick up in store returns?
- 6:04How? How is that presented in in the
- 6:06physical store? Are you?
- 6:08Is it in an app? That Ohh yeah.
- 6:10How does that represent? Well and.
- 6:12You can manifest. Those, those latter shopping
- 6:15experiences are powered by order management system that can
- 6:18handle the order. Yeah.
- 6:19Now if you're a store associate, we have a.
- 6:21We literally have a store app that they can use right to go.
- 6:25And just like. Yeah, it's like it is in store
- 6:29app, yeah. And or if you have a clienteling
- 6:31app, maybe you're using like NAD Mobile or predict Spring, yeah,
- 6:35we because we are services base ahead in the services.
- 6:38Space go on you, so you. Just said right into there and
- 6:41those are great use cases. We want our customers to use the
- 6:44existing tech investments, yeah, but they want to be powered by
- 6:48investing class platform. Again back to lightning fast
- 6:51speed adding new services on Google and that's one of the
- 6:55reasons why I joined this company was look in my prior
- 7:00life is really hard to make incremental changes.
- 7:04Yeah these were these were pretty rigid monolithic
- 7:07platforms. They're worked well in their in
- 7:09their swim lane. Yeah.
- 7:10But the world is changing really quickly and the the founders
- 7:14built this off the premises white why can't every company
- 7:17behave from a perspective like Amazon.
- 7:20These are all Amazon engineers. So Amazon built this web
- 7:24services, you know, all web services and modern so it can
- 7:27react super fast price promotion inventory.
- 7:30Yeah. And that disconnected piece and
- 7:31it's from merchandising to film it.
- 7:33Yeah. So let's take those same
- 7:35principles and bring them to everybody else.
- 7:38So as you see new needs, you can quickly incorporate those
- 7:41capabilities into whatever application that might be your
- 7:45customer service Rep, it might be your in store app, it might
- 7:48be your physical digital store. That's what's so much fun.
- 7:52Being able to, you know, are the possible wherever you need to
- 7:55go. She finds that retailers are
- 7:57worried about in terms of another system that they have to
- 7:59integrate. Is that like what's the barrier
- 8:02then what's the barrier to entry room?
- 8:03People are are having conversations with you.
- 8:05What's? Why do they think they can't
- 8:07use? Fabric.
- 8:07Yeah. Well, I would say, you know, and
- 8:10you take a step back and look at the industry as a whole.
- 8:13Because that's what I'm thinking.
- 8:14I'm thinking that they've got their ERP, they've got.
- 8:17There's so many different systems.
- 8:18Yeah, right. And still when you go and talk
- 8:21to the customer, like it took me 6 months to integrate to TikTok,
- 8:24Yeah, right. I'm so frustrated.
- 8:27All the platforms and I'm guilty of this in my prior life, they
- 8:31are like come to me and use everything for me and then get
- 8:35rid of all the other tech. Yeah, OK, so the barrier, a lot
- 8:39of case is having to switch over from A to B and having the
- 8:43technical expertise to do that. I mean, this is like a lot of.
- 8:47Just absolutely So instead. It's like, look, we'll do it
- 8:51slightly different, use the systems you have them, let's
- 8:54just make them go faster and better and use the underlying
- 8:58capabilities. And with the modern tech today,
- 9:02it's pretty easy to have with all the simple endpoints that
- 9:05you can incorporate in. So that removes some of those
- 9:09barriers to adoption. The second thing is this is
- 9:12really I think the commerce platform for guilty of this is
- 9:15essentially dead. Hey, here's my API's.
- 9:18You go tape, figure it out. You know, we're about customer
- 9:22success. We're about driving conversion,
- 9:24helping you increase average order.
- 9:26So we built these end to end, meaning let's go all the way
- 9:30from the experience, Yeah, help you with your business logic all
- 9:34the way down to the underlying service.
- 9:36So you can go a lot faster versus, hey, you got a great
- 9:39platform, lots of APIs, I'm sure you're pretty smart.
- 9:42Go take those APIs and figure it out later.
- 9:44Yeah, that's not fabric fabric. We're about customer success
- 9:48helping you drive outcomes because in today's world every
- 9:52investment dollar counts has to count for those urgent that our
- 9:56average order value and really stunning custom.
- 9:59Well, I mean look listen for me the future of retail in the
- 10:02sense and some of the themes that I've picked on is, is the
- 10:05fact that inspiration and discovery are now becoming
- 10:09growth engines. But then the systems to support
- 10:12Inspiration and Discovery and store are not there because you
- 10:15know the the consumers left to their own.
- 10:18Final two questions and I appreciate you busy day,
- 10:22something that's inspired you at the show and what, what, what
- 10:26point of inspiration are you going to take away?
- 10:28And then in terms of fabric, when you as CEO looking to the
- 10:31the future, what what do you see in terms of the future?
- 10:34What are the areas that are really interesting?
- 10:36Yeah, well those questions actually are multi part
- 10:40question. Actually, I'm gonna kind of
- 10:41blend together, OK? Right.
- 10:44We are on the cusp of the biggest technology revenues
- 10:49through AI. Yeah, OK.
- 10:51And commerce, there's so many use cases in commerce that have
- 10:55been in the heads of all of these amazing brands and
- 11:00retailers companies globally, but they've just been too hard
- 11:04to do. Yeah, And it's either takes too
- 11:06much labour, I've touched too many systems together and so
- 11:09forth. AI is going to be the biggest
- 11:12unlock for the consumer experience, right?
- 11:16It's gonna touch every app aspect from customer success all
- 11:20the way through to the shopping. Yeah, but you can't do that
- 11:24without the back end being rock solid.
- 11:27Because every commerce experience, I don't care where
- 11:30it comes from, from some combination of product, price,
- 11:34promo, inventory and order. Yeah.
- 11:36And if you can do that and mix and match.com, well, yeah.
- 11:40So what inspires me? The things that I see from the
- 11:43hyperscalers around the advancements.
- 11:46Agnostic or you? We are, we are, we are built on
- 11:50a WS, yeah. But we use, we can use services
- 11:53from other people as needed quickly investor breed a right.
- 11:57So it's not. Yeah.
- 12:00So my what gets me excited is seeing these innovations where
- 12:04AI can build consumer experiences or shopping
- 12:07experiences or BBC at any, just whatever you dream of.
- 12:12Yeah, that is unbelievable. And the advancements you're
- 12:16going to see in search and those are going to unlock the next
- 12:19kind of wave of I think of shopping and whether it's BBC.
- 12:26And that's what gets me excited because as a platform provider
- 12:30and ready to help a lot because you can't unlock them unless you
- 12:33can deliver those combinations, that critical kind of a comic
- 12:37level. So that's what inspires me.
- 12:39Yeah. And in delivering kind of real
- 12:42results versus kind of Fantom, like, yeah, that's a great
- 12:45project. In 18 months, we'll see how it
- 12:46goes. Listen I I totally agree with
- 12:49everything you said and it's really refreshing and nice to
- 12:51hear about the enablement or empower of conversion in store
- 12:56right. Because I think it's just the
- 12:59system challenge in store is is is big and and and I think if
- 13:04you're lucky enough that you were a pureplay online and
- 13:07you've gone into physical and you're building everything from
- 13:10the ground up, whoa, very lucky. But that's not the reality of
- 13:14modern return. And you and I has consumers work
- 13:17were frustrated like I think there's a better way.
- 13:20Yeah, And I think the technology, and This is why I
- 13:22love being a fabric and here to help revolutionise commerce for
- 13:25everyone and let's go. Yeah, Mike, thank you, So.
- 13:29Much Hey, so much fun. Thanks for the invite today.
