- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett. Twenty years ago this week,
- 0:08Speaker 1: on October first, twenty four yours truly was actually bar Mitzvah,
- 0:15Speaker 1: just before my thirteenth birthday. My fate decided to do
- 0:22Speaker 1: this bar Mitzvah, and it was a great way to
- 0:25Speaker 1: end the twelfth year of life and to begin the
- 0:29Speaker 1: thirteenth year of life. But on that same day, twenty
- 0:33Speaker 1: years later, I had to see the horrible images of
- 0:37Speaker 1: Iran attacking Israel. And it's no coincidence because this was
- 0:43Speaker 1: going on just before the High Holy Days. If you remember,
- 0:48Speaker 1: last week, October seventh was part of the High Holy Days.
- 0:52Speaker 1: It was part of Young Kipper's solemn tradition. I won't
- 0:59Speaker 1: say the celebrations. Actually Young Kipper is a day days of.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Its homen But but.
- 1:10Speaker 1: To see the rockets coming down against Israel and the
- 1:14Speaker 1: terrorist attack on the train in Tel Aviv where six
- 1:18Speaker 1: are shot dead on the anniversary of my bar Mitzvah,
- 1:23Speaker 1: that would break anyone's heart. It broke my heart, but
- 1:28Speaker 1: it made me also very alert to how we have
- 1:34Speaker 1: to protect ourselves in the Jewish communities in New York City.
- 1:40Speaker 1: This is right now happening in Israel. But I am
- 1:46Speaker 1: so thankful the NYPD is guarding every synagogue possible. I
- 1:51Speaker 1: am so thankful that Jewish neighborhoods are getting protection during.
- 1:55Speaker 2: The high Holy Days.
- 1:57Speaker 1: And by the way, I don't think the FEDS says this.
- 1:59Speaker 1: It seems like it's the NYPD doing it.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And throughout his mayoral.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Hardships and being indicted and going through all of that,
- 2:08Speaker 1: Mayor Adams is still working to protect the Jewish community.
- 2:11Speaker 1: That should be highlighted today. But I wonder if and
- 2:17Speaker 1: I have to look this up at President Biden and
- 2:19Speaker 1: VP Harris are sending federal reinforcement to support the Jewish
- 2:23Speaker 1: communities across New York City and other urban areas. Because
- 2:29Speaker 1: my biggest fear, I don't want to talk about it
- 2:32Speaker 1: because I don't want to happen. But we do not
- 2:35Speaker 1: need copycats here in the United States. We do not
- 2:40Speaker 1: need I Ran and the really negligence of the US
- 2:45Speaker 1: government to support Israel in this effort, or it wouldn't
- 2:50Speaker 1: have happened. Thank God for the Iron Dome. We don't
- 2:54Speaker 1: need those attacks to inspire others here, especially because we
- 3:01Speaker 1: don't even know.
- 3:03Speaker 2: How many terrorists are here.
- 3:04Speaker 1: We know that a lot have been arrested, but there
- 3:08Speaker 1: could be selves, and I had to be sounding conspiratorial.
- 3:13Speaker 2: But my prayer this High Holy Days twenty twenty four.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Is that our Jewish communities in New York City are
- 3:22Speaker 1: very much so protected. I've had my thoughts on the
- 3:28Speaker 1: Orthodox community, but you know what, they are to be protected,
- 3:37Speaker 1: deeply protected, whether Orthodox or Conservative Jews.
- 3:42Speaker 2: They are deserving to have the right to live.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And these attacks on Israel are kind of showing the terrorists, oh,
- 3:51Speaker 1: maybe they don't deserve.
- 3:52Speaker 2: The right to live. Well, we got to prove them wrong.
- 3:55Speaker 1: We got to show them we are tougher than these attacks,
- 4:02Speaker 1: that we can overcome this attack. I have seen a
- 4:05Speaker 1: lot of unity to bring all these hostages home within
- 4:10Speaker 1: the Jewish community, and I love that. I've seen the
- 4:20Speaker 1: somber memorials as well, the empty dinner chair, dinner table
- 4:27Speaker 1: in time. But you know what, we have to ask
- 4:40Speaker 1: this United States government to truly defend Israel now.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And that's why that's.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Going on one lay up on news because I don't
- 4:48Speaker 1: want to be on even the thirtieth anniversary of my
- 4:53Speaker 1: bar Mitzpha seeing that again, twenty anniversary is hard enough.
- 5:03Speaker 1: You're trying to honor and celebrate that anniversary. And then
- 5:06Speaker 1: you see the rockets coming down against Israel and thanking
- 5:10Speaker 1: God for the Iron Dome. Thanking God for the iron Dome.
- 5:21Speaker 1: But in these Jewish communities, where citygogues are literally just
- 5:23Speaker 1: on the streets of New York, we have to protect them.
- 5:27Speaker 2: They do not have that protection.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And I am again so thankful that the NYPD is
- 5:37Speaker 1: stepping up to secure and support the Jewish communities, especially
- 5:42Speaker 1: during the holy days. I remember Russia, Shana used to
- 5:46Speaker 1: be such a special holiday to go to with Rabbi government.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And after Rabbi government passed, actually we.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Kind of.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Not distance ourselves from the religion but from the community
- 6:04Speaker 1: because life took us in different directions. We had to
- 6:08Speaker 1: support a grandmother that was frail and yet about to
- 6:12Speaker 1: turn one hundred. We had to had to survive two
- 6:15Speaker 1: foals around the time that Rabbi was wrapping up his
- 6:21Speaker 1: ministry and beyond, had to take care of a father
- 6:28Speaker 1: that you know, was not doing well towards the end
- 6:38Speaker 1: with his battle of proseigancea my dad, John Garrett. And
- 6:45Speaker 1: then this year we lost our canter Judy Steel.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And let me tell you, she was the rock right.
- 6:54Speaker 1: She not only kept the community together and made an
- 6:57Speaker 1: effort to get everybody together in her home means, but
- 7:03Speaker 1: her singing held up the world, I believe, and with
- 7:08Speaker 1: her passing, we've lost another anchor, and together we have
- 7:13Speaker 1: to be that anchor.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Together now.
- 7:17Speaker 1: We have to as a unit, whether you are Jewish
- 7:20Speaker 1: or not Jewish, say Israel deserves to be protected, the
- 7:25Speaker 1: Jewish people protected and defended as well. And I hope
- 7:34Speaker 1: you feel that way listening to this podcast, because those
- 7:41Speaker 1: rockets coming down should not have ever been a thing.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Where are our support for the state of Israel. Instead
- 7:52Speaker 1: they're questioning every move they make. Oh they kill the
- 7:54Speaker 1: HESBLO leader, Well why they do it?
- 7:55Speaker 2: Why they do it that way? Well they did it.
- 7:59Speaker 2: That's the pole.
- 8:01Speaker 1: They killed off a HESBLO leader and so many more
- 8:04Speaker 1: hesbel A soldiers.
- 8:06Speaker 2: And that's a big thing. And if you cared so
- 8:10Speaker 2: much about the.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Innocent Palestinians, the innocent Lebanese, well why don't you care
- 8:15Speaker 1: about the innocent Israelis that are on eggshells every damn day,
- 8:20Speaker 1: whether in Israel or I believe here in New York
- 8:22Speaker 1: City or across the country in UCLA. Last semester, you
- 8:26Speaker 1: couldn't even go in to campus because they blockaded and said, oh,
- 8:29Speaker 1: if you're Jewish, you can't get on.
- 8:31Speaker 2: How adismitic is that?
- 8:37Speaker 1: And so if we're not gonna get support from upper levels,
- 8:42Speaker 1: then it's true. We have to stand by each other
- 8:45Speaker 1: as a community, and we're we should ask those who
- 8:48Speaker 1: are not Jewish to support us as well.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And not criticize us, but defend.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Us and support the an applaud the deaths of Hesbela
- 9:02Speaker 1: leaders and the killings of Hesibel leaders, I should say,
- 9:06Speaker 1: because that's a win for not only Israel, but for
- 9:09Speaker 1: the country's, the United States and the world. But I
- 9:14Speaker 1: want to come here ten years on my thirtieth anniversary
- 9:17Speaker 1: of being environmentsmen and say, well, Israel was attacked again.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I don't want to see that. I want to see
- 9:23Speaker 1: guess what. Israel has been able to prevail and won't prevail.
- 9:30Speaker 1: But that's thanks to the support of its ally, the
- 9:33Speaker 1: United States of America and here in New York. It
- 9:36Speaker 1: seems like the NYPD is a major ally of the
- 9:40Speaker 1: Jewish community, and I pray that stays that way. I
- 9:44Speaker 1: pray that continues, especially through the High Holy Days. My
- 9:49Speaker 1: prayer today seeing what happened on Tuesday scene, knowing it's
- 9:52Speaker 1: the High Holidays, is that Jewish communities can feel safe,
- 9:57Speaker 1: can feel secure, can feel able to proceed with their
- 10:02Speaker 1: worshiping and their synagogue communities to really.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Honor the high Holy days and celebrate them with one another.
- 10:17Speaker 2: That's my one lag up on news. I'm Alex Garrett.
- 10:19Speaker 1: God bless the United States, God bro bless Israel, and
- 10:23Speaker 1: for goodness sakes, God bless the Jewish communities across the world.
