- 1:40SPEAKER_00: We're going to be talking about what it is and why it's important, especially if you are out there looking to sell online products and what you can do to start building your personal brand online.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: So, Ayla, welcome.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Thank you for joining me today.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Karen.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: I'm so happy to be here.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: It's a pleasure.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I know we've been talking about this for a while, so I'm really excited that you have come onto the podcast and you're going to be sharing your expertise with us.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Yep, happy to.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: I'm hoping to provide everybody with some top tips as well.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: So actual insights that uh course creators can go away and start implementing to build their personal brand successfully.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Now, this is uh quite a hot topic, really, isn't it?
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: And it's and I do think it's something that doesn't always get taken on board, especially when you are looking to build an online business.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I think for many course creators, they perhaps think that they they they can create the product, put it out there, and then they'll get those instant sales.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: But of course, you and I both know that that is not necessarily the case, and there's a whole piece that goes into them being able to make those sales, and part of that is the way they build they're building their personal brand online.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Uh and I think that the term personal brand can sometimes be misunderstood.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Um, sometimes people can think that it is simply your imagery, you know, the photos that you use, and yes, that is a part of your personal brand, but your personal brand stretches much more than that because the bottom line of it is really it's your reputation.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: So it's what people think of you.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: So what people think of you and your expertise, how comfortable they are perhaps buying from you, how willing they are to listen to what it is that they have to say.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: So your personal brand actually isn't really about you in the sense that your personal brand sits in the minds of other people.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: It's what they think of you.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: So if you have a strong brand, you have a strong supporting reputation, people feel so much more reassured, they feel comfortable buying from you.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: And that's why I always encourage people who are starting uh building a business or they're creating a course to really think about building their personal brand with authenticity and intention.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: I think that's really important.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: I think whenever we put anything out, having that authenticity that sort of sits behind it is incredibly important.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: And you're absolutely right, it's all about reputation.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: And the thing about the online space is that there are so many businesses and entrepreneurs out there that are selling what they have, they're selling their products, they're selling their services, and they are looking to you know build traction within their businesses.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: And so, what that means is that within the online space, it's such a saturated place that in order to stand out and to be seen, there needs to be more thought and intention around that.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, that a lot is being said about being consistent, and you have to do this and you have to do that.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: And I think that you should always do what's right for you in your business, but there's some underlying principles because you've got to show how you deliver value, and particularly course creators, it's about the transformation that you're going to bring to your uh your ideal students and the people that you want to bring on board onto your course, and it's how you position yourself in comparison with everybody else.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: You know, a key thing to remember is that you're not uh talking to everybody, you're not broadcasting to the whole world.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: What you're trying to do is you're trying to speak directly to your ideal student or your ideal customer.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: And I think that once you're very clear on who your ideal customer is and the language that they use and what it is that they want from you and from your program, your messaging will be much clearer.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: And that is really the essence.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: You know, what are you known for and how effectively are you getting your message out there?
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Is your message rooted in, I guess, simplicity and clarity?
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: And that's how you cut through.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I completely agree, actually.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: I think when it comes to messaging, I think the the the simpler you make it, the more effective it's going to be.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: But you can only make something simple once you have that clarity that's built around it, and then of course, you can only get that clarity when you know how you want to show up and what you're about and what it is that you offer to your your students and and your customers.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: And I think I think part of creating an online business and or creating an online course, yes, you're looking to create a product that you're looking to get sales from, but actually, because you're the person that's created it, you're the person that is delivering the content, you're the person that is teaching others, there's almost sort of a a your how people then perceive you becomes really important because then it's a case of well, is this person credible?
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Can they deliver what they are promising?
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Are they going to get me results?
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Do I like them?
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: What do they stand for?
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: And is that aligned to who I am and the type of person that I want to be working with?
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Um, and and do I like their business?
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Do I like what they're putting out into the world?
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: And is it resonating with me?
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: And then when it comes down to teaching me, are they going to teach me in a way that is going to be um that that's going to work for me?
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: So, so actually, um, from a student's perspective or a customer's perspective, there's a lot of questions, whether they know it or not, these might not be questions that they're aware of sort of consciously, but it will be they will be questions that they're asking in the back of their minds when they're making a purchase or when they're looking to make that purchase.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: And so I think one of the ways that as clause creators, we can navigate that and we can um we can answer those questions in the best way possible is by the way we show up and the behaviour that we display online and the things that we talk about and what we share with the world.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: And I think that then helps to build our reputation in a way that is conducive to us meeting our goals and um achieving those sales that ultimately we're going to want to achieve.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, the majority of course creators are creating a course because they have something valuable to teach and they want to get that message out there.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: So whilst your course will help build your brand, you equally need to build your brand, as we've just been saying, you equally need to build your brand and your reputation to help you sell that, help you sell the course.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: You know, there's so many well-known course creators out there.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Is it easier for them to make sales because they have a reputation in the space?
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, we we could, I guess, argue about that, but I would say it probably is easier.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: It's easier for them to build their email list so that they can have more people directly to sell to.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: I think it's an extremely important part of the marketing mix for any course creator.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: And I think that if you take the steps to proactively, consistently put your message out there, then it will do nothing but help you sell your course.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I had actually just to put this in context, really, I had something that came through my email yesterday from someone who um I'm I'm part of their program.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: They they are well known within the online space, and it's somebody that I have been a part of their program for a couple of years, and I really like them.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: They are very much aligned with the way I think and what I feel about things.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: I love the fact that they bring in a spiritual element into the work that they do, and so yesterday they sent an email out to obviously their email list that they they had clearly been building for some time, and they have put out the fact that at the end of this year they're going to be hosting a live event.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Now, this event is most likely going to be overseas, and what was really interesting is that I I'd already said to my husband that if this was the case, if they were going to do this, I would be interested in attending.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: And so when they put out this email yesterday, um, you know, saying that at the end of this year they're going to be hosting this live event, they're just uh trying to work out location at the moment, but it's most likely going to be in the US.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Without thinking about it, I I just so happened to say to my husband, I'm penciling these dates into my calendar because I'm going to be going.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: Now, when I think about that, it for me it was a no-brainer because I am invested in what they have to offer because I know them.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: I've I've worked on the programs that they've put out, so I've purchased products that they have created.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: I really like their messaging, I really like how they approach what they do, and I also know that I will get so much value from being a part of this event.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: So for me, it was a bit of no-brainer.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: But this person has built their personal brand.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Like they have a really strong personal brand online, and so every time they put something out, every time they share something, every time they release an offer, because of the brand that they have built for themselves, I won't be alone in wanting to be a part of that.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And I think when we talk about reputation management and personal brands online and all of that, and you then ask that question is it enough for for these people to be well known in their space, does that generate those sales and the you know increase their profit profit margins and all of that?
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely, because we're buying into the person.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: If I didn't like this person and I didn't like what they had to offer and I didn't like the messaging and how they showed up, then I wouldn't for a moment even consider it.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: But it's not that's not the case at all.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: And I've already penciled in those data into my calendar.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: I think that is how that to me, that's how powerful creating a personal brand is.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: You know, and I I I'm sure that the person that you're talking about has probably spent a good few years crafting their personal brand.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: You know, it crafting a personal brand isn't something that can be just be done overnight.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: It it is something that needs to be given some thought, and you know, you have uh a plan of activities that you do.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: It's like, you know, you know, yourself as um as a as a brand strategist, it's bringing everything together.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: So all the different parts of you, so how how you look, how you talk, how you appear, how you dress, the branding of your business, where you appear in networking groups, you know, all of these things all come together to create that image and that impression of yourself that you want to put out there in the world.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: And this person that you're talking about, I can maybe guess who it is, has probably spent quite a bit of time thinking about well, okay, who am I?
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: How do I want to share my personality with the world?
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: Um what do I want to share?
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: How much of my personal life do I want to share?
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Is it enough to let people into my world so that they can really get to know me and they can get to like me?
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, you you instantly uh took up that invitation to buy those tickets because also on top of that, the third factor, which is incredibly important, is that you trust in her, her ethics, her her values, as well as her experience and her skills and her knowledge.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: So all of those facets of her brand uh and her personality, everything is working together so that it was a really easy decision for you to make to sign up for those tickets and travel halfway across the world.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: And that's what we want to do and create for all of our customers.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: We want to make it as seamless as possible so that when you land in somebody's inbox, they're gonna be like, absolutely, it's almost like it's a hell yeah, I absolutely want that.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: I want to work with this person.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: How am I gonna do that?
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: So we need to be visible as your example.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: We need to show that we're valuable and what our value is, and just make sure that we are showing up so that our customers know that we are available.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: There's no point now in this world, which really is based on a reputation economy, I would say, you just can't be the world's best kept secret anymore.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: Because you could create the most marvellous course in the world, but if nobody hears about it or nobody knows who you are, you're really gonna struggle to uh to break through and be seen and heard.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I really agree with that.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: I think there is so much noise out there now, and I think that one of the challenges as business owners or entrepreneurs, whether you're online or offline, is being able to be seen and to be heard above all the other noise that that is out there, especially within the online space.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: There is a huge amount of noise, probably more so since the pandemic, because more people have moved their businesses online, and therefore they're I mean, I'm always being inundated with ads.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: Every time I go onto Facebook, I've I'm always like my feed is just full of them.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: I go onto Instagram, I've got, I'm I'm constantly being marketed to.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: I'm always, you know, in my inbox and whatnot, you know, it gets it gets crazy.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: I have to spend time now unsubscribing because I cannot cope with the level of noise that is coming through because everybody's trying to be heard, everybody's trying to get a spotlight onto their businesses so that they can build their audiences and they can have that visibility and they can sell more of what they're selling.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: So I think, and and then it just does become noisy.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: It's almost like there are there are so many people that that land in my inbox that I have no idea who they are.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: I may have signed up to their um email list at some point, but if truth be told, I don't know who they are, I don't know what they stand for, I don't know what they're about, and so am I going to therefore buy from them?
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Probably not, because to me I don't know them, I don't like them because I don't know enough about them, and I certainly don't trust them because I don't know enough about them, and then I don't like them because I don't know enough about them.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: So I think when you have invested in getting people to know who you are and building your reputation and sharing you with the world so that people almost see what's behind the facade, because I think a lot of it is um, I think a lot of entrepreneurs do carry facades around, and I think when you are brave enough and you get to that point where you're like, no, I'm gonna peer back the curtain, they can see who I really am, I think that's where the magic starts to happen because then people buy into you and they buy into what you're about and what you stand for and your ethos, and that's when they start knowing you enough to then start liking you, and then of course trusting you.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: And so when we then put things out in the world that we're we're hoping will sell, then you've got more of a proven strategy behind you because they're they're not buying your product, they're buying you, so then you're more likely to get those sales.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I I think you're absolutely right.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: And for me, you've touched on two really important points.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: The first point that I want to pick up from what you're saying is is about how we are all being more conscious of who we are letting into our world in the sense of, you know, who are we signing up to?
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: You know, and I think with our inboxes, most of us are suffering from inbox overload and we are going through and we are unsubscribing.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: Now, why are we unsubscribing?
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Yes, we might not like the people, but I would go a little further and say we need to remind people why we are relevant to them at this point in their uh, you know, at this point in their business life or or their personal life.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: We are unsubscribing people, maybe yes, we don't know them, but we don't understand why they're relevant for us.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: Or maybe they're not relevant for us right now.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: So I would say it's when when it comes to personal branding, and and it's a key example as to why we need to be talking about the value that we're giving, because through the value that we're giving, we're reminding our audience to how and why we are relevant, how and why they need us and why they need us right now.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: And that leads me so beautifully on to the next point you were talking about was when we need to be our true authentic selves, which is all the time.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Because, like I said before, we're not talking to the whole world, we're talking to the people who we are going to love to work with, and that isn't going to be everybody, and we're not right for everybody.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: There are numerous competitors, probably in every aspect of the work that we do, but we want to come to work in the morning and be excited by the projects that we're working on, the people that we're working with.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: We, you know, we want to pick up the phone and be excited to speak to our clients, and and I think the personal branding and creating that brand which embraces everything that you are, even your differences.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying we need to hide away from things that make us different, because the things that make us different are the things that make us special.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: And what makes us special is what's going to resonate with the people that we are going to absolutely love to work with.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: So I think our personal brand, yes, absolutely 100% our authentic selves, it's got to be rooted in our authenticity.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Applying ourselves to uh consciously growing our personal brand with intention and purpose, and then following through.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: On the actions that we that we set ourselves so that we uh absolutely enjoy being out in the world, being visible and talking about ourselves and our business and the value that we can bring.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: It's not self-promotion, not really, it's not bragging, it's not boasting.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: It's we have value, and as business owners, we've got something that can help somebody else, and that somebody else could be really struggling.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: So don't we have a purpose in putting ourselves out there so that person who's struggling hears our message and receives our help?
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: I think I think it's you're right.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: I think that it's almost like you kind of owe it to others to get yourself out there to that extent.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: Because, as you say, there are going to be people, they're going to be customers that need what you have and therefore need to know that you exist in order to be able to buy the things that's really going to help them.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: I think, especially here in the UK, our culture is very much we play everything down, we have to stay humble, we cannot brag, we cannot, you it is really frowned upon.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: In fact, I think really it's drilled into us from such a young age, isn't it?
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Especially women, we cannot, we're not allowed to over like talk the things that we bring to the table.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: We cannot brag about it.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: We cannot, you know, sometimes with men, it's that overconfidence is just accepted.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: But if we're if if a female acts in the same manner, it's very much frowned upon.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, she's full of herself, she's she loves herself, you know.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Do you know do you know what I mean?
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: And so I think there's a little bit of that that really sticks in people's minds that we cannot um we cannot promote ourselves because then it'll be deemed as bragging.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: And and you're absolutely right, you know, we need to be talking about what we do and how we can help people, because those people that need that need to hear our message and need to have access to the things that we offer because in their life it's going to move them forward, and so it's finding that balance between showing up in a in an authentic manner that puts across the value of what we do and the results that we drive, because it's all about those results, but not in a in a way that makes us feel uncomfortable or icky or you know, as though we're not actually being truthful to ourselves.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: We're trying to be something that we're really not.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: And I know speaking to a lot of my clients, the whole visibility thing can be really uncomfortable because they're they're not used to being so um visible, I suppose, with with everything that they have to share.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I I think that's true.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: And I think that you know, women particularly, yes, we have this ingrained nature to be humble.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, we also have imposter syndrome, you know, that there are many, you know, real things that prevent us from stepping forward uh and stepping into our space, to be honest, almost you know, shining our light, whatever metaphor we we want to use for that.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: But I think that if we don't step forward, you know, what's the worst that could happen?
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Well, the worst is somebody else talks about us, and are they saying and are they talking about us in the way that we want them to, or actually are we completely invisible?
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: So I think it probably is time now for us to step forward, but I would say let's not, you know, let's do the work behind the scenes.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: There is a process to helping build that confidence.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: You know, we're not saying we're gonna rush out there and you know get on every single platform all the time 24-7.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: That that's not what this is about.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: You know, we're talking about intentionally, carefully, and purposefully building our reputation both in person, so it based on the real us.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: So if we go into a networking room, you know, what we are online is who we are in person.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: So there's no, you know, there's no great dramatic shocks or anything like that.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: But I think once we've done this and we understand how we can talk about ourselves and in a way that makes us comfortable, and we do that by sharing the value that we bring and the difference that that we make.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: And we come from a place of service, a place from where we genuinely want to help other people.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: Uh, and you know, that's a two-way interaction.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: You know, we can help other people, other people can help us.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: It's a collaborative space where we you know work with others and we we raise each other, we raise each other up.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: But you know, these are confident spaces, particularly for women to to step into.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: And I think that you know, almost trust the process, you know, and you know, don't run before you can walk.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: You know, if you're new to the personal branding journey, then well, you know, we can we can talk now about how we build our personal brand and and taking those steps forward.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: And the first step is to think about your messaging.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, the way to cut through is with that simplicity and clarity.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: But as we said earlier, that's easier said than done.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: So some work does need to be uh done on what is the value that we're bringing, what is the transformation that our clients will go through from working with us?
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: You know, what is the benefit?
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: Why are we different from our competitors?
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: You know, why should somebody work with us?
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: And why should somebody work with us right now?
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: So all of these questions will help shape your messaging.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: And then I think once you've got all your messaging, you've probably got several sheets of paper or sticky notes, whatever, how can you crystallize that down to one sentence?
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: Because that's what we really want to do.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: So we get that message nice and clear.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: Uh and I think then once we've got our message nice and clear, that's like a grounding point.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: It's it's a place that we can always return to when we get confused by all of the other social media, all of the things flooding in our inbox was like, you know, do this, do that, you know, spend money here, spend money there.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: Actually, that might not be right for us, but we won't know that until we've done that very first stage, which is getting really clear on who we are, who it is we want to help, and how we help them.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: And those messages will underpin everything that you do that will guide which social media channel you're going to be on, it will guide how often that you're going to post.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: Because we don't need to be everywhere all the time.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: We just need to be where our our ideal clients are.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: It will help you look at LinkedIn.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: If LinkedIn is a is a platform for you, it will help you craft your profile.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: It doesn't need to be written in the same way as everybody else is writing names.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: You can put your personality in there because you've got the confidence in really knowing who you are and knowing that your unique essence, how that serves your ideal clients.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: And when you're confident in that, that really is quite a magical thing.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Because you can stand up at a networking meeting and talk about your business with that enthusiasm and passion, and that's what you need for sales.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: You know, we cannot underestimate how valuable enthusiasm and passion is for what it is that we're selling.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: And I think that you need to create those opportunities to put yourself into that selling space, but that comes after you've done all the work that you've done on your on building on building your brand.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: I again I agree with you.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: I think what's really interesting about when this you're in that place for selling, I know it can make some people feel really uncomfortable, like they're having to step into that salesman mode of having to get those sales for their course and whatnot.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: And they can feel obviously really icky about doing that.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: But what you're talking about is selling with authenticity, so selling through the brand that you're creating.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: So it's almost as though when you have a conversation with somebody, if you really cement who you are, what you're about, how you can help, the value you bring to the table, and you approach it in a in a very authentic way where it's just you having that conversation, then that can be really powerful, and then that can be enough to result in sales, which means that you're not having to do that salesman, you know, the salesman approach where you're trying to sell, sell, sell, sell, sell.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: You don't have to because people are buying into you, they're buying into your brand and what you stand for, and that, like you say, that that's where the power is, because then it's this seamless process as opposed to trying to make something happen that you're not comfortable with because you've not done that work, so therefore you're just trying to sell without anything backing it up, and I think you're you're you're absolutely right.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: I think everything that goes into it's the foundational pieces, isn't it?
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, I I I've talked before on the podcast about my branding studio.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: So I I work with clients on with their branding, helping them to curate these really strong brand images for their businesses so that they can really attract the right clients.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: But but your personal brand, the same principles apply.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: You have to do that groundwork and really dig into what you're about and really get to know you as well.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Because there is that piece to it, isn't there?
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: You know, not everybody comes to the table fully aware of who they are.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Um, they they may have a vision of what they think they are, but actually what you might think and what clients say about you could be very different.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: And so when you really uh go under the hood of who you are, what you're about, what you stand for, stand for all of that, like say the foundational pieces that make up your personal brand, there that that that's where the magic is, because that's where you come together as a whole, and that's what then your your clients are buying into.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: You you know, you hit on a very good point there in the in terms of um you know who you are, might who you think you are might not be how others perceive you.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: And when um people come and work with me, we do an exercise right at the beginning of our personal branding journey where I get you to tell me all about yourself, um, but I also interview people close to you.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: I do a series of 360-degree interviews, and and that's really, really quite interesting and illuminating because we're looking for, or what I'm looking for, is what is your unique essence, what makes you different, and what attracts the clients that you love, what attracts them to you.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: And when you start to crystallize this and you start to use these words in your marketing materials and the way that you talk about yourself, it gives you an inner, an inner power, an inner confidence because you find the stories that make you that have shaped who you are through your life.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: And selling through storytelling is a much more authentic way, and it's a much I don't know, much nicer way for, I guess, women in business particularly to talk about themselves.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: And storytelling can build such a deep connection with your audience as well.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: Because if we've gone through challenges, we've all gone through challenges as business owners.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: Other people will be going through similar challenges, and and that will resonate, and they'll be interested.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: You know, how did we deal with that particular challenge?
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: And you know, would I have made that decision at that particular time?
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: And and when you really look at your values and your skills and your behaviors, and you start to unpick why you've made that decision at that particular time, or why did you respond in that way to that situation?
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: These are our values that that are ingrained, but these are all so important when you put together your your holistic brand, if you like, your holistic approach to putting yourself out there and then managing and crafting that you the reputation that you want to build.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: You know, what is it that you want to be known for?
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: You have an opportunity, and I think it's an exciting opportunity to create to craft what people think about you, and if that is firmly rooted in who you are and your values, it's going to jet propel your success.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: I think people want to buy into a human, don't they?
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: They don't want to buy into a machine, they don't want to buy into a faceless business or a faceless brand, they want to buy into a person, and a person has a story, they have a history, they have they they've had a pathway that's led them to where they are today and why they're doing what they're doing.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: And you know, in the world of branding and personal branding, we talk about the power of the why, and that that's where your story is rooted uh from because your why is the the reason, the purpose why you're doing what you're doing, and that is what can really um connect with somebody on a real really deep level, especially if you're talking about things that they're experiencing, and that you're you almost because you're you're sharing things that are quite personal to you, that's the thing that humanizes you and makes you different because of that experience and that that sort of proof, if you like, of you know, I've been here, I'm now here, and I'm going there, and this is why I'm doing it.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: It that that that journey is what can really resonate with your customers because of that human aspect to it.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: You're sharing, you're lifting that lid, you're you're lifting, you're peeling back the curtain, and you're actually saying, This is who I am, this is me, and these are the reasons why I'm doing what I'm doing, and this is the and and this is why.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: This is the thing that really sits in the in the cornerstone of my heart and what and what drives me forward every day, and and that's the thing I think that can really make a difference.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: I know, you know, the person that I've spoken about that that is obviously working towards putting this event on at the end of the year, I like their story.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: That that is something that really sort of resonates with me, and I like the fact that they've been on their own journey, and there's a lot of similarities and similar thought patterns as well.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: And we can't invest in everybody, uh, because like I say, you know, we have limited sort of limited funds, limited time, limited energy.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: So I think when you do decide to be like, right, okay, this is the person that I want to work with, or this is the person I'm going to buy from, you want to make sure that there's that that you there is a similarity there.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: There is a similar way in which they think, in which they behave, in the way they present themselves, to maybe how you do as well.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: Or maybe they're they're more aspirational.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: So where you are right now isn't necessarily where they are, but maybe there's an aspiration piece to that as well.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: But I but I think I think it all really boils down to that things resonating, and you can only you can only resonate with someone once you've shared what you're about and your story and your why and your purpose and all of those key foundational pieces that goes into building your personal brand.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think so.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: And I think it's you know, I get asked quite a f you know, quite often, you know, what should I share?
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: How much should I share?
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: And I think this is very personal to to everyone that you know, there is a line.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: I talk about your personal professional reputation, and I talk about intentionally crafting the reputation that you want, you know, and we've talked about perception.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: So I would say, well, if this particular aspect of your life or incident or challenge, whatever it may be, I would say, is that going to enhance the personal professional reputation and brand that you're trying to create?
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: Is it going to be a distraction?
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: So there is an element of thinking about, well, what am I sharing?
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: What am I not going to share?
- 39:57SPEAKER_01: I was on a I was on a networking call the other day, and we were talking about personal branding, and one of the other members of the call just popped in and just said, Well, I think personal branding is useless.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: I'm not going to talk about walking the dog at the weekend or what I had for breakfast.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: And for me, that was a classic example of not having that clarity around what you're putting out there and how that is going to build your personal professional reputation.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: Because talking about our family life, there is a degree of what we're going to share and what we're not going to share.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: I'm probably not going to talk about walking my dog every morning.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: You know, why is that relevant to my audience?
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: But I might talk about the fact that walking my dog gives me a break in the day and how that resets my mindset or how it resets my focus.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: I'm not going to talk about what I had for breakfast because that is in no way relevant.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: So I think it's got, you know, what is relevant to my audience?
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: What is going to enhance my brand?
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: What is going to damage my brand?
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: You know, you're building something that is potentially your most valuable asset, and that is you.
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: And, you know, like we've talked about your um you know, your your lady that you're going to be going and potentially going to this event, you know, there will be a line up to which she shared personal things about her life.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: She has decided where that line is, so she keeps personal stuff personal.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: But there'll be maybe enough of her personal life to bring into her professional reputation that she's created to show that she's a person, she's an identifiable human being.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: Because at the end of the day, you're absolutely right.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: We are human to human and we want to work with people who excite us and light us up.
- 41:54SPEAKER_01: We don't want the heart-sinking feelings in the morning.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: So everyone has to decide where that line is for them, what they share and what they keep private.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: That sort of time and attention you you have at the beginning where you think about, well, who am I?
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: How do I want to be known?
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: And how am I going to craft and build my professional reputation?
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: You know, that it's not an exercise that can be rushed through.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: And yes, it does change over time, uh, because you grow, basically.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: So, you know, you do need to sort of go back and have a look at it.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: Because if you're surrounding yourselves with the same people all the time and you're growing, well, maybe those same people aren't seeing your growth.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: Um, so you know, that's a factor to uh to consider as well.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: And I think it's really important that as you are developing your business and you are developing your personal brand, that you equally position yourselves around maybe people that are equally doing that as well.
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: Um, because we're all influenced by by the people that we have around us, and I think it's really important to have those people in your um sort of in your line of fire, so to speak, that that influence you in an inspirational way that that keeps you motivated, that keeps you grounded, so uh, but also so that you can see their growth as well and the way they're doing it.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: And I think that equally helps you to start feeding that into your own business and um to to make the right decisions about how you're showing up online.
- 43:41SPEAKER_00: Because whether you go networking or you're online or you're doing other ways to promote your business, if it's your business and you are that person that is out there presenting yourself as the owner or the founder or or however you label yourself.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: You are the person that people are looking at.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: You are that guiding light.
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: You are the person they're going to be questioning.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Do I want to work with this person?
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: Are they aligned with me?
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: Do they get me?
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: Do they do they understand what I want?
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: Are they going to give me the results?
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: And so I think it's really important, equally, as you're building your personal brand, to make sure that you are around those people that are doing it as well.
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: So that you can almost kind of learn from other people as well.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: So that it's not just you trying to figure it all out all of the time.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: I would definitely say, you know, talk to people around you, get some professional help, um, because the people around you will have their own perception of you.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: Um and and like we're saying, they might see you as you think you were rather than perhaps where you think you are now.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, I I would say totally agree.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: I spoke a couple of episodes ago in episode 39 about awards.
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: Now, you know all about awards, you help your clients to enter awards, you yourself are an award winner, so you know the power of awards and what that can do to elevate someone's personal brand.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: So, how I mean, can you share your thoughts around that and what you think about awards?
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think that for me, there's there's four stages to building an effective personal brand.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: You know, the first stage we talked about a lot on this podcast, and that's you know, how you talk about yourself and what you know what you're going to be presenting to the world.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: And then the second stage is then how you are presenting yourself to the world.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: You know, what are you saying on social media, what are you saying on your website?
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: The third stage is what you are building your sphere of influence and actively creating situations where other people can talk about how good you are.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: You know, there's that old um, you know, old and that, you know, old adage where, you know, we can say how good we are till the cows come home, but actually people don't pay attention until somebody else says how good we are.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: And awards are a fabulous way to do that because awards where you've submitted an application and an independent set of judges has gone through and looked at what you've written, they've researched you, they've looked at what you've said, and and they've come back and said, actually, yes, you are an award-winning.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: We've looked at you, we've compared you with your peers, and we think that you are worthy of an award.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, that that is incredibly powerful and and will just enhance your reputation, no end.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: It's it's like media coverage when you put something into the media and an editor likes what you've written and likes it enough to think it's a value for their publication and for their readers, and they print it.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: You know, that's that's a phenomenal third-party endorsement.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: Um, so awards are really powerful for that.
- 47:16SPEAKER_01: And I think that what's not to be underestimated as well is the work that you do behind the scenes when you're completing the award application, you know, that deep level thinking about what you are doing as a business in terms of again mention it again, the value that you're bringing to your clients.
- 47:37SPEAKER_01: Um, and then doing award applications as well can somehow give you that nudge that you might need and that element of courage to go and get some testimonials, uh, especially if you're slightly reluctant to get testimonials.
- 47:51SPEAKER_01: Um, doing an award application can help you do that.
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, the wonderful things that people say when you reach out to them and say, you know, I'm I'm entering this award, could you please tell me what value uh you gained from working with me?
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: And then you get these back.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, I mean, it's just wonderful.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: So I would actively encourage uh people to think about entering the awards, particularly awards that are going to be right for their business again.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: Think, you know, don't just enter any award, enter an award which is going to further your business, an award that is relevant in your business sector.
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: I think just being part of the awards process can be really powerful.
- 48:33SPEAKER_00: And I mean, I still I said it, I was talking about this, like say on my on episode 39, where if you're considered for an award, whether you're a finalist stage, runner-up, or or you happen to win, then that alone, that like you say, that third-party endorsement is going to really um elevate your standing and how you're seen.
- 48:55SPEAKER_00: And I think when we talk about standing out in a sea of noise and and being able to be seen above everybody else, then being able to kind of have these credentials against you, I think takes it to the next level.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: And I think in the world of you know, online business where it is a very saturated market, so you've got so many people out there selling selling their products and services, it's it's about looking at what you can do that just gives you that edge, that just helps you to take your business to the next level.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: And I think to a certain extent, I think awards often come off the back of yes, what you're doing for your clients and the value you're bringing and the results that you're achieving, but I think it's also down to your personal brand as well and how you're seen, how you're known, and again, what you stand for.
- 49:51SPEAKER_00: I think that all goes into the mixing bowl, and then obviously that is then what comes out in their in their decision.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: So I think being able to invest in your reputation very early on.
- 50:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, as soon as you start a business, I think this is something that you can be doing.
- 50:12SPEAKER_00: It doesn't necessarily mean that you've got to throw a ton of money at it, it just means that you're being conscious about the way you're showing up, the way you're behaving, the way you're talking, the way you stand by what you say.
- 50:27SPEAKER_00: And if you say you're going to do something, you do it regardless.
- 50:32SPEAKER_00: So if you say to a client, I'm going to whatever, you deliver on that promise because that is excuse me, that's a really powerful way of becoming known for quality and for delivering a really great service because you're there, you're providing them exactly what they need, and you're standing by your the word, your word.
- 50:57SPEAKER_00: So your word becomes something I think is really important.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: It's you're you're building your credibility and you're building trust from your client's perspective because they can trust you to deliver and you you deliver on your promises.
- 51:14SPEAKER_01: So absolutely.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I totally agree.
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: So, with that in mind, um what could my listeners do to start that process of building their personal brand?
- 51:29SPEAKER_00: Do you have any tips that you can share with them so that they can either start doing or start working towards building their personal brand?
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: Or maybe if they are, maybe they could elevate the experience of how what their their clients are are receiving.
- 51:49SPEAKER_00: Um, do you have any tips that could help them?
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 51:54SPEAKER_01: I think I think the key thing that everybody can do, whatever stage they're at in their personal branding journey, is is to actually sit down and really think about what is it that you want to be known for?
- 52:07SPEAKER_01: And then think about actually, am I saying this in my messaging?
- 52:12SPEAKER_01: Is it really clear in my messaging?
- 52:14SPEAKER_01: Is the value that I'm giving to my clients really clear?
- 52:18SPEAKER_01: Have I have I nailed that messaging?
- 52:21SPEAKER_01: And then look at where you're being seen.
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: So, where are you presenting yourself?
- 52:28SPEAKER_01: If you're presenting yourself in person, what are you saying about yourself in networking events?
- 52:33SPEAKER_01: Are you doing yourself justice?
- 52:35SPEAKER_01: You know, are you being the person that you've defined yourself as that you the person that you want to be online?
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: Are you showing up as the person that you know authentically you?
- 52:48SPEAKER_01: So have a look.
- 52:49SPEAKER_01: Where are you showing up online?
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: What is being said about you online?
- 52:53SPEAKER_01: Set up some Google alerts for your name just to make sure that you're tracking what's being said about you online.
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: And if you find that what is being said about you or what people are thinking about you isn't what you want it to be, then you need to do need to proactively think about well, how can I change that?
- 53:14SPEAKER_01: You know, what steps do I need to take?
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: And that is going back to the messaging again.
- 53:18SPEAKER_01: It's it's um it's a circle, really, all the time.
- 53:22SPEAKER_01: These things, these things are a circle.
- 53:24SPEAKER_01: So sit down and spend a bit of time.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: How is it that I want to be known and how can I do that?
- 53:32SPEAKER_01: Where do I need to be seen that's going to help me be better known?
- 53:38SPEAKER_01: And what places do I need to be in or at that is going to help me raise my visibility and get in front of the people that I really want to work with?
- 53:49SPEAKER_00: Aila, that's really great advice.
- 53:52SPEAKER_00: And I I I I mean I'm sitting here nodding because I agree with everything that you've said, and I think it's something that I don't think personal branding gets talked about enough, if truth be told, for the level of importance it has when creating a business.
