- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Alright, lads, how's it going?
- 0:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, all good, mate.
- 0:02SPEAKER_02: Good weekend.
- 0:03SPEAKER_02: Good weekend.
- 0:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, good weekend, mate.
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: Good weekend.
- 0:06SPEAKER_02: Went ice skating yesterday.
- 0:09SPEAKER_02: Done two laps and got off because I couldn't put one foot in front of the other.
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: So left my missus and Sophia and her mate to go round and round, but I failed miserably.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: Footballers are meant to have balance, aren't they?
- 0:20SPEAKER_04: No, not this one.
- 0:21SPEAKER_04: No, I know, I know.
- 0:22SPEAKER_04: Nah, I've just chilled as well, yeah.
- 0:24SPEAKER_04: Just um we didn't have a game this weekend.
- 0:26SPEAKER_04: It's a cup tie, so back home, spent time with a family.
- 0:29SPEAKER_04: It was nice.
- 0:30SPEAKER_03: Some of us were uh lighters out at a concert, James Arthur.
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: Good James Arthur.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: You're not having them, my yours game.
- 0:37SPEAKER_03: Nah, not for me, not for me.
- 0:38SPEAKER_03: Love songs?
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: I can just see you now.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: At the front, you and Laura at the front.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: He goes to me, he goes, You must like her, like going to a concert with her.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: I went, What you're talking about?
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: It was his idea.
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: But you'd been dragged along.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: Do you remember he won X-Factor or something, didn't he?
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: It was homeless, wasn't he?
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: Well, you won X Factor, and then he was knocking off Ritaurora.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: It was a big turnaround.
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: Not bad, is it?
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: No, not bad.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Anyway, I had a little chance at the weekend to look at Dylan's Celtic goal.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: As soon as you type in Dylan McGeeok, it has goal next to it.
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: I've seen it.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: Very impressive.
- 1:15SPEAKER_04: Well, not known for scoring scoring goals, but yeah, the few that I've scored to be fair have been pretty decent, especially my first one, yeah.
- 1:22SPEAKER_04: That your home debut?
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: It was aye.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: I came on the week or two before against Motherwell.
- 1:28SPEAKER_04: Um that was my obviously my debut, and then uh Celtic part, I hadn't played yet, and then yeah, St.
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: Mun, we were I think 3 0 up in the first half, like quite quick.
- 1:39SPEAKER_04: How old were you?
- 1:40SPEAKER_04: Um 18.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: 18, aye.
- 1:42SPEAKER_04: So you're warming up and the goals are coming in, you think, bro, I'm gonna get it.
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: I do warm up right in front of the manager.
- 1:48SPEAKER_04: Doing style jumps in front of Lenny, yeah.
- 1:50SPEAKER_04: But um, you knew that as soon as we get a few goals up, he was going to fling a few young boys and that on the rest of the rest of the boys that are playing.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: Was he like that, Neil then and wanted to put some in?
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: Because managers are reluctant sometimes to give you a debut because they think you should uh you need to earn it.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I think you did have to earn it with Lenny as well.
- 2:06SPEAKER_04: Like in his staff at that time, you had Alan Thompson, Johan Miaalby, Gary Parker.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: Um Parker was like a big a big thing for me.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: Like with Celtics, he was the one that was pushing it massively.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: He was a player, him proper player, yeah.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Villa, um class.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Speaking of debuts, big showler, Amiobi.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: We had an under 19s game on the Saturday morning, he was playing centre half against Wrexham.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Bobby Robson uh sent one of the stewards down.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: You're not playing, you're on the bench for the first team.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: About half past four, he's centre forward, first team debut against Chelsea, and Dennis Wise by the throw in the box, didn't he?
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Ah, he did, I was there.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Aye, he did.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: It's mad, isn't it?
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um I remember, yeah.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: I played, I've made my debut for Sunderland at Wolves, 1-1-0.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: We had Redding on the Tuesday in row 4-1 up and he didn't put us on.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: Reed.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: Boiler.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, you know, remember that old skit on Soccer Am when they were doing the warm-ups, the geese.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: I was like, like running past them, that star jumped to the lot, say, How are you, gaffer?
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: Nah, didn't get off.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: Just keep me on your toes, didn't he?
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we've had um by the way, did Jim Goodwin try and tackle you on that goal?
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: It was mate.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: Aye, I was telling Skip about it.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: Remember him, yeah.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: He was a he was a he was he was good to hard to play against, wasn't he?
- 3:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he was hard to get aggressive and fit.
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: He's done the United manager.
- 3:20SPEAKER_04: I guess I he's done alright, I think he struggled a bit this year, but he's he's done well.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: He was so he came in when I was a couple of months left in my contract, Aberdeen.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: He came in after Stephen Glass.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, and took over.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: Stephen Glass.
- 3:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was a new cousin with him, yeah.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: Oh were yeah, yeah, Glass, yeah, really great guy.
- 3:38SPEAKER_04: He's a good player, wasn't he?
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: He's flying training and stuff, like he was like doubling balls and that he was decent.
- 3:43SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, Goodwin came in.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: Um had a bit of cracking that with him and a few staff about my solo goal that he tried to nip in at the um halfway line and skin and skin.
- 3:53SPEAKER_04: I did, I that's I thought I was seeing him.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: He's another one like Scott Brown when you played against him, they were bald.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: And has he got the hair now?
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: Ah, he's got the grey hair, so we're fucked, yeah.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: But anyway, we've had a bit of feedback from podcast royalty under the kosh.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: So we have so Chris Brown, ex-Sunderland, give me a sent me a photo, and he's got us up there listening on his car, I was chuffed to bits.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: Sent us a nice voice note saying, I like how you're doing it, you know.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: You're you're in Carlisle, so you're you're going down the Carlisle route and then branching out.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: It's like that's brilliant, that.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: And he went, the big man, Johnny Parkinson's in the car with us.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: What does he call him?
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: The big scruff.
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: The big scruff.
- 4:32SPEAKER_03: He says he's got a bit of feedback for you.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: So then comes the voice note.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: So Brownie's very supportive, supportive, Zorri, he's interested, he's engaged.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: This is from John.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: So regards to us not branching out onto YouTube.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: Because this is what would happen on YouTube.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: This video comes with a warning.
- 4:51SPEAKER_03: We've got a fucking horrible ginger ratty looking thing, a little fat dumb truck boidy, and I don't know what the other cunt looks like.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: All the best, lads.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: Sounds about right for him, doesn't it?
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: So Brownie, thank you, Johnny.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Every bit of uh support is welcome.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: So we might not be branching out onto YouTube.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: Very nice of them though.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: But thanks, lads.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: As I said, podcast royalty under the cush, so it's nice to have that very early on.
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: So on that productive note from Mr.
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: Parkin, let's crack on.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: A recap.
- 5:47SPEAKER_03: This is a podcast talking all things collar united, football in general, honest opinions, and a few laughs.
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: Thank you so much for the support we've had so far.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: We really, really do appreciate it, don't we lads?
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, definitely.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: It's massively been great.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: We've actually had a message from Stu MacArthur, I hope that's right, all the way from New Zealand, who's tuning in.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: And when the gaffer Neil McIntyre's looked at it, we've got people in Canada, Indonesia, Australia.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: So you've got a mate somewhere as well in Thailand.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: Thailand, yeah.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he uh messaged me this morning saying I'm uh I'm gonna have a listen while I'm over here.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: So excellent, very good.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: You're listening to me, Chris Lumsden, former Sunderland, Barnes and Carlisle player.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: You're listening to current player with Bellamina and Ireland, Dylan McGillch, who has represented Celtic, Hibbs, Sunderland, Aberdeen, and Carlisle, as well as playing for Scotland as a full international and completing this ball playing trio with no legs, Mark Skip Boyd, whose former clubs include Newcastle United, Port Vale, Carla United, and Barrow.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Now, Skip, you've got something you need to get off your chest for last week.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I messed up.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Um, but it won't be the first time, it won't be the last time, will it?
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: So I said the nightclub, um, the Johnny Brain story, I said it was in freedom um down West Walls.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: It wasn't freedom, it was club excess.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Um, so a couple of my mates, Gary Ellison and Luke Wordsworth, were very, very quick to pull me up about that.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: So there you go, lads.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: I uh do apologise and uh on we go.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: I actually got a message saying they were disappointing you because you should know your night clubs.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: I did go to go to him quite a few times.
- 7:21SPEAKER_04: Have you seen um just touching on that, have you seen the boy on TikTok?
- 7:24SPEAKER_04: It's the HMRC or something, the boy that's doing all the podcast things.
- 7:27SPEAKER_04: Aye, that's one of them, isn't it?
- 7:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'd be scared.
- 7:29SPEAKER_04: Honestly, I'm thinking I've done a few, obviously in Glasgow and stuff in early years, like, and I'm thinking, have I said something now?
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: Like, because you've you've got a story in your head, but sometimes you can see it differently from you've heard something.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so for people listening, it's Carell Prince, isn't it?
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he now looks into people's podcasts like the under the cauch, like the overlap, and they pull apart like people's stories.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: They've said they've played like against certain players or players, or they've scored in that, and they go, No, no, no, and he goes, Come at the stage.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: But there's one where I can't remember who it is, it's quite a big play in these times.
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: You get man in a match or something.
- 8:03SPEAKER_04: He didn't even get on the game.
- 8:05SPEAKER_03: Our mate, I don't know whether Lee Clark, Nash, ex Nick Castle, he's been hammered, hasn't he?
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: Said it was the best player you've played again.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: Zedan, come to the stage.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: Wasn't it Nickastle at that time?
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: Zidane didn't even play in the game, and it was just like horrible.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: And then Nikki Button schools have talked about it and that.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: But Nash is a good lad.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: But Dean Saunders is absolutely paranoid about it.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: Every time Saunders tells a story now, he says, and this is uh how I remember it, this is my truth.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: He just covered himself.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: I've been uh having a few sleepless nights as well after last week's uh why just worried about them kids at uh centre parks on the Monday morning when they were in the debauchery and you took Johnny Brain.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Johnny Brain's not there.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: Where's where's the teacher?
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Where's the teacher, Mark?
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: Easy way to Port Meel to start his career.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: So just going back to that skip, you could have been in those nightclubs when you seen Johnny Brain a lot earlier.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Uh when you were younger, leaving your castle, you were maybe signing for Collar United earlier than you eventually did.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: Yes, that's right.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Um Well thought you were.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Well, so obviously I got released on the afternoon off um off Bobby Robson.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: Um so obviously I'd four my dad and stuff, and I was driving back on the A69, I was just past Holt Whistle, and my phone rang.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: So didn't know the number, answered it, and it was uh an Irish voice at the other end.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: He just said, Hi, is that Mark Bowers?
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, it's like Roddy Collins, the Carlis United manager.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: I was like, How are you doing?
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: He's like, I've uh obviously it's it's now common knowledge of being released off Newcastle, so what would you think he was going to say next?
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no, no, yeah.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: He's like, just so you know, we don't want to sign you.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: I was like, Alright, no bother.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: And and that was it.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: He's like, so just in case we're gonna get in touch, hometown team and all that, we don't want you.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: All the best.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: Put the phone down.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Is that why every time me and you drive past, hopelessly you get this little shut up?
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: Is that when they do the call?
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: I was just like Would you think he's reasoning for that?
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: Maybe he thought you mentioned that or something.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, have you come across him before?
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: No, no.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: He's he's out there, isn't he, as a character?
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: He's I mean, he managed Carlisle, he used to have the big long fancy coat under the shirt and tie, and he was dead animated, and he was just a terrible manager.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: And that's what just because he didn't want me.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, the Rod squad's gone off YouTube, hasn't it?
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: Has it?
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: It was a documentary on the season, and it it's crazy.
- 10:19SPEAKER_03: But remember Stuart Green?
- 10:20SPEAKER_03: You know Stuart Green.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm good, Major Green.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: Stuart Green was ex New Castle Dillon, he good player, um, played for Palace, Hull, etc.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: So he was at Hull, and he was not playing, so Hull kind of sent him on loan to Carlisle.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: He's a Carlisle like Whitehaven lad, isn't he?
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: With a fee,£30,000, committed to it, that they'd sign him at the end of the season.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: So Stewie's went there, hasn't he?
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Obviously he's training with Roddy and the lads, and he's not enjoying it.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: And then the manager's changed at Hull, but this deal's already in place.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: But he's trying on the sly with his agent to get back to Hull.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: So I've heard it from a few lads, they're sitting on the coach on a Friday right to go, and Roddy just gets on, goes everyone off.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: We've got a snake in the grass, lads.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: We've got someone who won't go to war with you.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: But all the lads didn't give a shite then.
- 11:06SPEAKER_03: They're all looking at you, they're like, he's clocked us.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: None of them give a shit.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: Like he said it.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: One of the lads said, if you said put your hands up, who's the rat and all things like that?
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: But he's just waiting, then he's just went, You Stewie Green, called him out, um, just saying, How can you act how can you play and play with a man like that who's not gonna run through a brick wall for you?
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: And Stewie Green's like trying to like say why what's happening, and what he just went, you're not playing again.
- 11:31SPEAKER_03: Very intimidating fellow though.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, scary brother, isn't he?
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Steve Collinger.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: Steve Collins' brother, yeah.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, big scary man, yeah.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: But I mean, I didn't argue with him on the phone, I just says no bothering.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: The best one was a couple of lads who were playing still on the bus, and Stewie's off in his car, and they're like, Lucky bastard.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: We don't want to go.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: I'm trying to negotiate a move, Gaffer.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: I bet he tells a great Stu when he does that as well.
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: Uh a few of the lads were seeing about Roddy as well.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: They'd get in like the bottom of the league, and they'd get in on a Tuesday, having the blackboard, beehive, half ten.
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: I've heard the shit be there.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: Bro, the lads are like, so nothing like we've got school run at three.
- 12:11SPEAKER_03: Listen, you'd be there, they're all ringing their misses saying, We've got to go over the pub all day, and they're like, You're bottom of the league, you should be out there coaching and that.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: He's going, we'll get it, you know, this will get us together, we'll club together, we'll we'll build this like um camaraderie.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: I think they got done for nell off Orient on the Saturday as well.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: He was an odd man, wasn't he?
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: And just the last one on Roddy.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: Remember, uh Simmo was telling me when he got in there, so Simmer was playing under Roddy, and he he was gonna retire.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: They were doing set plays at four o'clock on a Friday afternoon before Saturday game.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: But Roddy on this Rod squad was building a boxing ring in the gym by hand, so it took him like six, seven months.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: He was just waiting on the cushions coming and to finish it.
- 12:51SPEAKER_03: You got sacked three days before.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: Simmo went, right, demolish that got rich straight away.
- 12:57SPEAKER_03: So Roddy was one of them, and not people non-Carlisle fans, just Google a few things on Roddy Collins and you'll see a few.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: He's going viral at the minute for talking to a fourth official, I think, when he played Shrewsbury.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: But bit of housekeeping.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: So again, we've had loads of people get in touch, which is great.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: What insta handle is at three in the middle eight.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: Email three in the middle at yahoo.com.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: And a massive, massive thank you to AEC Limited Electrical Contractor based here in Carlisle.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: Family business owned by John Heaney and supported by his sons Henry and Toby Heaney.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: They cover industry, industrial installation, gate automation, testing and inspection.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: The lot done well there, didn't I?
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: Very good.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: You know, they've done the dressing rooms at Carlisle, you know, the the the lighting and all that.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the brand new ones.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: So they've done that.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: So they've done a hell of a lot of work for Carlisle United over the years.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: I've known John a lot, long time, top man.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: So they've also nearly got me signed for their Sunder League team.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: The quarters didn't that six pounds deep over Christmas.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: A bit giddy.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: What this Christmas?
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: This Christmas in the handshake was there.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: Morton's West.
- 14:05SPEAKER_03: They're in the county cup quarterfinals on 1st of March, so we might get out there and see them play.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: Certainly not playing.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: But thank you, EC.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: Much appreciated.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: And another big thank you to our mate, Cumbria Van Sales, located on Henry Street, Botchagate, in Carlisle.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: If you need a van, the buy or end, check them out.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: He's been going a long time, and Lee Hoolikan will sort you out.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: As I said, good mate of ours, great lad, good player back in his day, Carlisle Apprentice, really good mate with the late Tony Hopart and Rory and Liam DeM de Lap.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Good mate, yours, Skip as well.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, he's my best mate Hoolia.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: Uh so we can't thank him enough for supporting us.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: Um, as you say, he was a really good player as well.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, wonder left foot, he'll tell everyone.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: Uh but it was to be fair, and still is on the other 35.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, top lad, and thanks very much, Lee.
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: Doesn't like getting doesn't like getting uh left out of the over 35s, though, does he?
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: No, no, I'm signing for Carl's.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: He loves that one.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: Gets left out, he's like, that's it, he's sitting at the sideline.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: Player of the year last season's bowl.
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: I'm just that's me, that's me done.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: But no, top lad, and thank you to both.
- 15:09SPEAKER_03: As we've said many a time, we couldn't do this if it wasn't for that support.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: Right then, let's get stuck in Carlisle United.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: We'll do Carlisle, we'll do a bit of football in general, bit crack, and then finish back on Carlisle.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: But Rochdale, I'm just gonna leave it out there and I'm like he was gonna go for it.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: But the quote I had back was, and I thought was quite apt.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: It was good until it wasn't.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: Wow, yeah.
- 15:38SPEAKER_04: For me, um obviously I've got games on a Saturday, so I don't get to see a lot of the games as I would like.
- 15:44SPEAKER_04: But I watched it um this Saturday as we didn't have a game, and honestly, it was so poor.
- 15:49SPEAKER_04: I thought it was so poor.
- 15:50SPEAKER_04: I I can kind of see the game plan of just trying to frustrate them and don't get beat with three or four, but that that's all all good.
- 15:59SPEAKER_04: But if if you get a result, if you get a point or whatever, you nick something, but the minute you don't, and then even when they went one-il down, they didn't really switch anything up.
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: They played the same way, they they never looked at scoring.
- 16:11SPEAKER_04: Um but yeah, it's just I I honestly uh the way they set up behind the ball, they they wouldn't even go, they were scared to go for the half-wheeling when Rochdale had the ball at the back, just passing it about.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: I agree, I think they were camped in the half, and that was the plan from the off.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: Um I mean yeah, like you say, you get what they're they're set up to do, and I and uh they had a lone striker in Luke Armstrong, but uh it was like they were playing 4-6-9, wasn't it?
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Um now like you say, it's alright if you nick that point, but when you go one hill behind, you've gotta have you've gotta get out there and think, right, we need to get back in the game.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: But like you say, nothing really switched, and that was a disappointing thing.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: There was no there was no urgency to try and get back in the game, and and they just sort of they sat in the shape and and just let and I and I just feel Rochdale didn't really have to exert themselves.
- 16:56SPEAKER_04: How do you flip that?
- 16:57SPEAKER_04: How do you flip that though?
- 16:58SPEAKER_04: And I've been there as a player, it's hard.
- 16:59SPEAKER_04: Like you're playing against probably a team that's like possession based and you're gonna sit in and a low block and stuff.
- 17:05SPEAKER_04: If they score early on the first half, how do you then switch your whole game plan and the whole mentality of being?
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: That's the hard bit, the mentality, yeah, isn't it?
- 17:13SPEAKER_04: Well, you've worked all week on we're just gonna be solid, don't let balls in between us, and then now we're gonna be expansive, now get on the ball, play through the length.
- 17:22SPEAKER_04: Like, how how are you able to do that?
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: I understand Rochdale are top in the flying and the runner-ons amazing, and the Carlisle Scouts would have gone and watched them tear Boringwood apart midweek.
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: Now, are we in a position here where we're thinking Carlisle should be winning the league, should be up there, should be competing, or do we need a realisation that York and Rochdale are miles ahead and the only way to get something from it is to go and kind of treat it like it was a I remember them kind of performances when I've been in the team struggling, and you go to the top of the league, you've got Swansea away, you go to Notham Forest away, and you sit in, even when we're up at the top, and you if you can get the first goal, it's perfect because then they've got to come out, there's gaps in behind it.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: But if you don't, as Dylan just said, your game plans out, you your mentality more than anything's got to switch to.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: We've worked on this for three, four days, we've been zoned into it, and then we've got to certain suddenly jump out of it and go.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: And I've spoken to a Rochdale player, I'm not gonna lie, and he said Rochdale were comfortable, yeah.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: Said I know because I know it's boring, they Rochdale themselves don't want to pass it all the time, but said we'll wear them down, we'll wear them down.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: You know, uh Rochdale even said it a point against Carla United is keeping them in the mix as well, so they didn't have to really chase it.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: It was almost I know Rochdale obviously going for the league as well, um, and Caleo had that kind of half chance, but it was like it was almost a must-win for Caleo as well.
- 18:52SPEAKER_04: Like if you've got any hopes the try to like go automatic, you need to go to Rochdale, pick up three points, close the gap, and show the rest of the teams up there, the three four teams, that we're one of the big dogs in this league.
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that was honestly like a like a team in the FA Cup playing against a Premier League team.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: Just a loving men behind the ball, hopefully we don't get beat with four or five.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: Well, I've been like I said to you on the um after the game, I I used to play for Barrow in that league, and we were one of the smaller, sort of weaker teams in the league, and we we've gone to to the top teams and sort of set up like that because it's probably our best chance of sort of nicking something.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: But even when we went behind, we did sort of like say, right, we're gonna have to have a go.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: Sometimes we're on the end of a three, four, five, but it wasn't for like just one nil down, we're gonna sit in anyway, and we're not gonna change.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: It's sort of just like an acceptance of like, well, let's keep it at one-nil.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: I just did I just didn't see what they had going forward.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: I mean, in the first half, Aji Boy got them up the pitch once with a with a he carried the ball up, didn't he?
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: And and and a neat little pass through, and I think it was Macadam or Gilead nearly got on the end of it.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: But apart from that, you just I don't know, it was just very, very disappointing on the other side of it.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: After going one-nil down, you think, right, come on reaction, and I just didn't see it.
- 20:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 20:08SPEAKER_04: But Kaleo have got more, that's the that's the problem.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: Like on paper, as a squad, I know obviously they've got a few players that are out injured, but on paper, surely you've got more than setting up a team to be so negative.
- 20:22SPEAKER_04: And I think going forward to the playoffs as well, what does that do to the rest of the teams up there when they're watching Carlyle def defending and playing the way they're playing?
- 20:32SPEAKER_04: I think they lose all respect.
- 20:33SPEAKER_04: The Rochdale boys after that game will have probably zero respect for that style and how Carlisle are playing now.
- 20:40SPEAKER_04: Like they're not don't get me wrong, playoffs can come and anything can happen.
- 20:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, of course, yeah.
- 20:44SPEAKER_04: But it's almost like you you're kind of that they're treating you like one of the teams that are going to be lucky even be in the playoffs, do you know what I mean?
- 20:52SPEAKER_04: Rather than being one of the big dogs in the league.
- 20:54SPEAKER_04: But again, it all comes down to results, and if you if you nick a point, it it's a great game plan.
- 21:00SPEAKER_04: If you don't, then that's when people like us can sit down and say, well, is that the right way to go about things with the quality you've got?
- 21:08SPEAKER_03: I had a good good texting of Keith Ward and he said, Remember the last time and last season, the end result is more important than the journey in this case.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: So basically what he's saying is we're gonna be in the playoffs, aren't we?
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Um in the playoffs anything can happen, but for me, like Scunthorpe now becomes massive, I think, for Hughes and the players, because there's supporters now starting to think I don't want to watch that, I don't want to go back.
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: Uh I might as well go back in early May, late April.
- 21:43SPEAKER_04: That was my fault.
- 21:44SPEAKER_04: Like there's a f over a thousand fans down again.
- 21:46SPEAKER_04: I know there was a ball was for another one.
- 21:48SPEAKER_04: I know there was like a lot that were disappointed, and there was a few that were kind of supporting the team at the end, but for me, what if you're gonna set up the team to be so negative and just admit that you're gonna be in the playoffs and what Have a go at it and we'll see what happens.
- 22:01SPEAKER_04: Then and I know they won't do it because they they follow the club button down the country and they always have.
- 22:06SPEAKER_04: But why even bother?
- 22:07SPEAKER_04: You may as well just turn up at the playoffs and say, Right, let's go.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: It's funny that Linny and Kelly were out because I think that's two players who probably would have not spat the dummy but would have been probably frustrated at how we set up.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: Or does Linny in that team get he takes us up the pitch a bit more, so we might have got up further?
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but you can say that, but like going by the reaction from the last couple months, been a few decent results, but a lot of the performances are like everybody's yeah now, and obviously Hughes is having to come out and kind of back up like yourself and the squad, like it's not as bad as the fans are making out and all this kind of thing, but they're no daft.
- 22:46SPEAKER_04: I mean that they they can see what they're watching.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: But Hugh's gotta protect the players as well, though.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: Has he got to say, right, I can't for me?
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: I think Hughes knows, and I think he would he likes he'd want to say a lot more than he can.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: Of course, he's gonna be.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: But he's got this group of players where he probably thinks, God, I could get rid of of most, yeah.
- 23:04SPEAKER_04: PB thought he could go and have a go at Rochdale.
- 23:06SPEAKER_04: And I'm not talking about high pressing the box and going daft and man for man over the pitch.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: But if they're gonna be possession-based and we're gonna put some sort of pressure on or set traps and then turn over the ball in good areas, if he thought he could do that, I I would I would think he he he he would have done it, but it probably does tell you that he he's probably no good belief that they're actually good enough to go and be that sort of team, that they're just gonna Luke Armstrong's playing basically midfield at the weekend.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: He was, wasn't he?
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: In in his own half, he was like in the middle of the two, yeah, and it just looked like he had no way.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: Well and I've done it a few times when we've it's so destroying, it is it's so destroying, especially when you're one of the bigger teams in the league, like with the from the outside, you are one of the big teams that kind of should be competing at the top, and you've been asked to play that sort of way, and then if you don't get his out, it's like what are we doing here?
- 23:56SPEAKER_04: Do you know what I mean?
- 23:57SPEAKER_04: Like we're good players Monday to Friday, and then we're asked to do that on a Saturday.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: Like, what it's no disrespect to Rochdale either that manager three, four years put a team together, yeah, and the the the manager before they've kind of played that certain way, and they've added players, just one player here, another player here, they're going by the lad from Hartleypool who gets 13 goals last season, so he's in a good rich frame of form.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: Get him, and I've been very, very impressed with them.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: And again, everyone looks athletic.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, York look athletic.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: We don't look I can't remember the last Carl team.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: Probably with Mellish was in Melish looked athletic, but you know, quality on the ball.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: Quality on the ball at times was a bit different, but Roshdale look a team that have been put together and are ready for it.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: And I know the manager's kind of building himself up here saying mentioning Carl's budget quite a bit.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: He's kind of saying, Listen, look what I'm doing on which is great, yeah.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: Fair enough, absolutely fair enough.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: But I think Skuntal game, as I've just said, becomes massive on Tuesday.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: I think we yes, where they are in the league, whatever, but we've got to go and start winning some games to keep the keep the the fans on board.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: Everyone inside, yeah.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: I mean, but whether Carl like it or not, one of Rochdale and York are gonna be in the playoffs, aren't they?
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: So they know they've played against them uh both a couple of times and and being on the wrong end of the result, and the and the way they've they've happened.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, York batted them twice, didn't they?
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: Um and Rochdale have beat them twice, so that's gonna be.
- 25:23SPEAKER_03: But you know what the disappointing thing is, neither any of the games I've felt we've not turned up, but Rochdale, York, and you look at the interviews, have not had the thought was going to be a harder game.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, I remember we top of the league, Carlisle, we went to Northampton on a Friday night, and if they had won, they'd go ahead of us, and this is like March, so it's a big time of the season, and we've gone down there and we've beaten them 3-0, and they've not turned up, and we come off what Dylan New just said and went we've done there, and we and the confidence we gained from it, that's like logic, and they went basically, okay, we need to focus on the top three because we're not gonna catch Carlisle here, we're gonna go.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: And I think Rochdale not being at their best, not having to exert themselves, will be absolutely flying again now for these games in hand.
- 26:10SPEAKER_03: And people said, didn't they the other week Rochdale have got too many games in hand, they're gonna be tired.
- 26:14SPEAKER_03: As three players here, best thing in the world is game, game, game.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: They would add a warm down on Sunday, they would add a time with their families, Monday would be today, cool down, get on a bike, the banter will be absolutely flying because they're they're ready, they're they're set, they know when they win.
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: If they win two more games, something like that, they're they're away.
- 26:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the chairman's probably throwing a three-day holiday in there.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: So this is where it comes, aye.
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: So quick new signing, Hugh Parker, Irish League signing from to what to Hull, played on the 21 football, not made a debut, on the bench twice, mon one month loan.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: What does that smell of to use?
- 26:55SPEAKER_04: I think when you seen it was announced, there was speculation that somebody's obviously picked up an injury.
- 27:01SPEAKER_04: I think you could see that it was kind of a panic kind of sign in, just to get him in for a month to cover someone.
- 27:08SPEAKER_04: So obviously when the team comes out at the weekend, you can see that with especially in the front three kind of area, that big um the boy Lemmy's injured and um big Georgie's picked up a knock as well.
- 27:21SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I think it'll probably be more cover than anything, but yeah, a a young lad coming and hopefully get some game time in it and see what he's all about.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's good for the lad, isn't it?
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: Um but like you say, it's maybe a bit of a a rush loan, something that they sort of uh needed last minute and up but listen, you don't know, do you?
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: He could come in here he might produce the goods, it'd be nice if he did.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: Shall we quickly do the poll results before we move on?
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: Right, put a poll up last night, so I've not seen these either.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: It is the question was is Call of United, is finishing outside the top three acceptable?
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: Because I was just gonna say Dylan said it, didn't he?
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: He said if they get promoted, then it is.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: But if they don't, then obviously it's not, and you can look at it that way, but I I know the question you can look at the question the other way.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Um from what sort of should we not be one of the top three?
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you should be really.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, you'd think Carlisle coming down from League Two and the size of the club and the and the backing they've got, they should definitely be one of the top three clubs.
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: So is finishing outside top three acceptable?
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: Yes, 22%, no, 78%.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: You just had a vote, didn't you?
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, do you know?
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: Had a look.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: Skip yes, Dylan, no.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, obviously I put yeah, just because if they do get promoted, then it is acceptable.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: But when you look at it in the bigger picture of the size of the club and and the finances and stuff, this should really be one of the kind of changes.
- 28:58SPEAKER_04: I know obviously we're coming on here weekly and talking about each situation, but again, if they do go up, then who cares how they played, how they got up, it doesn't matter.
- 29:07SPEAKER_04: But if they don't, then you can obviously turn around and say, Well, the way we the way we played week in, week out wasn't good enough.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: The big games we never established ourselves on on our teams, we never finished in a better position to give ourselves a home tie at this part of the playoffs so it's all the question marks in it, but um a team with the budget and resources and the the stu the size of the club coming down with the fan base and stuff should be right up there.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: So, question from Sam.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: So, hello all, great first podcast.
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: Thank you very much.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: You spoke about Jones not being to blame for the amount of money he has paid last week.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: My question for the group is just in football in general, to what extent do players know how much other players are paid?
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: How much resentment will there be when a highly paid player isn't contributing?
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: So in general, in general, we'll go in general, but I remember just a quick one on Carlisle.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: Sam Lavelle on a podcast he'd done mentioned it was a problem in the Carlisle dressing room.
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: So his words were along the fact of you've got players coming in now on the three, four, fives, and on in the team and sitting on the bench.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: Um, and he felt he was playing week in, week out, and should be on the same.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: I know there was an issue with probably Gabe Breeze where he was playing, Harry Lewis wasn't.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: If you're Gabe Brees and there's bids coming in for you, at that time there was, you go to the chairman or whatever, and you say, Listen, if I'm valued on that and you're knocking it back, my contract needs to reflect that.
- 30:39SPEAKER_04: So it's fair, it's a fair point.
- 30:40SPEAKER_04: I think it's that sporting director kind of role in it, it's kind of that new kind of era of football that they're in charge of kind of dealing with all the finances and making sure there's kind of a limit.
- 30:53SPEAKER_04: I think the minute you start offering big money, then that's when it just starts creeping up.
- 30:58SPEAKER_04: And as obviously Sam said it there, the Gabe scenario is the same where you start creeping up the wages, but before you know it, somebody will come from nowhere, starts doing really well, a bit of interest somewhere else.
- 31:10SPEAKER_04: Oh, I want to stay, then I want the I want the money he's on.
- 31:14SPEAKER_04: And then before you know it, he's on that, and you've got four or five, and it just starts rising.
- 31:19SPEAKER_04: So it is difficult, defin definitely difficult.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: When I was at Barnesia, I went in as a young lad, they paid money for me, but I was going to a dressing room that had just come down from the Premier League a couple of years before.
- 31:30SPEAKER_03: So these players were on big, big money, but trying to force them out.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: There was too many to force out, so some had to play.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: And there was a few big names from like Premier League years past and stuff were playing, but not trying a bit.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: And like myself and Gary Jones were trying to get were you know ex-roch deal.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we were trying to get our careers going.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: This was a big move for us, championship, and we were looking around seeing these aren't bothering, these aren't bothering their arse, like it was it was nightmare.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: I think that's what it comes down to.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: It's how people apply themselves, isn't it?
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, I mean, me personally, it didn't really bother me who was on more or less.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: It's just how lads sort of were around the place and how they were in training and stuff.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: I I just I could never get away with people tossing it off.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: Um I mean, people doing it for different reasons.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Sometimes lads sometimes wanted away and and things like that.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, we've mentioned Stephen McPhee.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: He had a a move lined up to I'm sure it was Wigan and he walked all week.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: He didn't get above a walk all week, and Brian Horton in the end just said, look, go in.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: And it forced the move in the end.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: Um he ended up he was going to Wigan, but he went to Hull.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: But what I'm saying is he forced his move by just disrupting training.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, we we played we uh so Alex Ray at Sunderland had a move to Wolves lined up, so he was just on the periphery, but he was 30-31.
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: So this wolves move was gonna get him higher wages.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: Probably his last big last big payday.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: And we're walking out, and he just went, if anyone wants me in this possession, I'll be underneath this cone.
- 33:00SPEAKER_03: He just went and stood next to this cone, didn't try a job, just came up and kicked it out of the plane.
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: I gaffer's just like go in.
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: He's like, I hope he'll be on the honestly.
- 33:10SPEAKER_03: He just used to shout all the time, Alex Ray, even before going out for summer, he go, Come on, Rangers.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: So then next thing is he's walked in, finally done it about the fourth day of running.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: You've just seen his beer and he always used to whistle.
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: So anyone who's played with Alex Rhea knows him, he'd used to whistle.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: He went, That's me, Midland's bound, and off he went.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: And then they played it when he finally got his move to Rangers, and I think they won it on that that helicopter day.
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: Oh helicopter Sunday, I wouldn't.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, don't talk about that.
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: Just for Dylan's sake, when the trophy was going to Celtic where they were playing, Scott McDonald for Mother Well scored two in two minutes, something like that.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: That would turn the helicopter, wasn't it?
- 33:45SPEAKER_03: And go back to Rangers, yeah.
- 33:47SPEAKER_04: I don't know if that's the same time.
- 33:48SPEAKER_04: I think there was there was definitely two.
- 33:50SPEAKER_04: Scott McDonald done it, but I don't know if Alex Reid was there at that time.
- 33:52SPEAKER_04: Ah, right.
- 33:53SPEAKER_04: He was definitely involved in our last day.
- 33:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's last both.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: I'm glad he won because it it was everything to him.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: Oh, it still is.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: He's he's on radio and stuff now in Glasgow.
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he won't mind me telling this.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: He he had a bit of a dip um personally.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: He was drinking a lot and on other stuff, and he had to see Peter Reid and just say, Listen, I need to get away.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: And he went to the priory for about two weeks, and we all missed him.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: Like Nel Kun was saying after games, we miss him, he's one mate, we love him round the dressing room.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: So to welcome him back from his like rehab stint, his peg, everyone gets their own peg, didn't they?
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: We put a crate of bud and loads of lines of sugar.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: Welcome back.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: He's walked in, and you're like, This could go even though it could go one or two in this.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: I don't think you get away with that, then we loved having him back.
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: What a lad he was.
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: Great player as well.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: But yeah, good question from Sam.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: Perfect.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: Uh one from Stuart Gilby.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: All the best for the podcast.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: Quickly back on the Carlisle.
- 34:54SPEAKER_03: He says, All the best for the podcast.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: This is exactly what we need round here.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: Have Carlisle United found their current level?
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: Would being in the National League for a season, another season be a bad thing?
- 35:05SPEAKER_03: Would it be better than going up and struggling?
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: Before we jump in, we going up to we should never be scared of going up to League Two.
- 35:13SPEAKER_03: I think it's harder to get out of the National League than it is to stay in League Two.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: I agree with that.
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: Um so have Carlisle United found their current level?
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's hard to argue against it, isn't it?
- 35:26SPEAKER_04: I think again, I'm going on the performance at the weekend.
- 35:29SPEAKER_04: I've not seen a lot of the football this year, but going off fans' reaction and the game I watched at the weekend, they've not done enough to merit being any higher than the teams I've watched.
- 35:40SPEAKER_04: Like Rochdale, they've played their game.
- 35:42SPEAKER_04: I think the York obviously have put quite a few by Kaleo, they've imposed themselves.
- 35:47SPEAKER_04: They you can see that they probably go up a level, League 2, and be a decent team.
- 35:52SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I think Kaleo just gonna try to be hard to beat and get a few match winners in the team and see if that can carry on, but sometimes it's not enough.
- 36:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and if they do stay down, the the the the next window, summer window needs to be National League players who get you out of the league, yeah.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: And even if Rochdale go up, go on go and get a few of them, go and get you well York have got the bigger budget, but you can get you can entice the Rochdale lads, you can it's what we said, haven't we?
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: I like the Borham Wood manager how he does it.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: He finds the northern best in the northern um the north conference north and souths, and he he goes from there.
- 36:29SPEAKER_03: But yeah, great question.
- 36:32SPEAKER_03: So let's go on to football chat in general.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: What a Premier League weekend.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: Um shall we start with a question though?
- 36:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, going off last week.
- 36:40SPEAKER_03: So Johnny Ray, good friend of ours, he's from the Carlisle Social, um you know, BBC Radio Sounds and Baby Radio Radio Cumbria do a podcast about Carlisle United.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: It's called the Carlisle Social, so check that out on BBC Sounds.
- 36:54SPEAKER_03: But this is his question, football in general.
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: I keep seeing a lot of football fans up and down the country frustrated with their own teams going sideways and backwards.
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: Is there an unhealthy possess uh obsession, sorry, from clubs with brand and style these days?
- 37:11SPEAKER_03: And is it having a knock on effect, making the game boring, reducing flair players, perhaps?
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: Or is it the supporters now demanding the brand of football and not the clubs?
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: So what he's saying is basically, are we sick of watching all these teams play out from the back and play this philosophy?
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: And is it now a little bit boring watching it?
- 37:34SPEAKER_03: I have to agree.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: And like we said last week, where are the flare players?
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: Where are the spontaneous moments on that pitch?
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there isn't as many as there was, is there, when you go on about flare players and and match winners and things like that.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: But I mean, as far as the Premier League goes, I don't see many exciting games now in the Premier League.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: I just find it all very much of a muchness, and they're all trying to play one way, and yeah, it's I never thought I'd say the Premier League be boring, but I do find it.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, when was the last really exciting, exciting game that you watched?
- 38:05SPEAKER_03: Well, yesterday was.
- 38:10SPEAKER_04: No, but just touching on that, Skip, like I I totally agree.
- 38:13SPEAKER_04: I find it hard to watch a lot of the games, yeah.
- 38:15SPEAKER_04: But the best part of the games are probably in the last 10 minutes when all the game plan goes out the window.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: No, it didn't go along, innit?
- 38:21SPEAKER_04: Like like yesterday, like Liverpool going for it, City are holding on, and then they break up the pitch, and there's lots of lots of action that the fans can get behind.
- 38:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and that's like most games where a lot of the goals are coming from.
- 38:31SPEAKER_04: That up until then it's almost like chess, side to side.
- 38:35SPEAKER_04: The managers drilled them all week on where we want to get the ball, and you see it where obviously Man City, a few of the boys are brought in.
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're playing for their teams like Knotts Forest and without uh Bullmouth and stuff, they come in, and now they're they're just a chess piece in this game where they they they commit two defenders pass the ball inside to attack the other side, and whereas you're usually seeing them driving with the ball 40-50 yards and cutting in and shooting, and so I think for the fans it's more difficult to watch because it's an entertainment business, innit?
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: You want to go to games and enjoy it, and with your kids now.
- 39:08SPEAKER_04: Managers are stacking the kind of the odds in their favour with the possession and where they want the ball and XG, all this kind of stuff.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: So I'll have to ask you because that's all we have loads of questions in.
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: So Mike Williamson, he was one of these coaches that when he came to Carlisle, I was like, you know what?
- 39:26SPEAKER_03: I've seen what he's done at Gator, seen what he's done at MK Dons.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: So he came into Carlisle and he just was set on this philosophy of playing out from the back, wasn't he?
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: As a player, what was I mean?
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: If he came in and I was a midfielder, I'd be going to loved it.
- 39:39SPEAKER_04: I loved it because it's right up my street.
- 39:42SPEAKER_04: I want to get on the ball and stuff, and he's a great guy, so I'll say that right off the bat.
- 39:46SPEAKER_04: He's great people and busty, um, Ian Watson, he's assistant, top, top guy, um, top coach as well.
- 39:52SPEAKER_04: So soon as he came in, see everything like they're doing like preparation-wise on um analysis and on the pitch.
- 40:00SPEAKER_04: Like, honestly, up there were the best I've had my full career, yeah.
- 40:03SPEAKER_04: Like, phenomenal, and the boys all loved it as well.
- 40:06SPEAKER_04: Like, there wasn't any like boys sitting about going, oh, what is this, and now a few bad eggs, but everybody got behind it.
- 40:12SPEAKER_04: Training Monday to Friday was phenomenal, honestly.
- 40:14SPEAKER_04: And I we're doing that against each other when we know the patterns, so you kind of know where they want the ball to go, and still try to stop it was hard.
- 40:22SPEAKER_04: So the big problem we had was probably we didn't probably have enough players to kind of go out on a Saturday and do it, yeah.
- 40:31SPEAKER_04: And a lot of times, and I find this even even now, where young young boys coming through and playing first team, where if you tell them something that's black and white, that's it.
- 40:42SPEAKER_04: Like the pass goes for here, A to B to C, and that is it.
- 40:46SPEAKER_04: Take it to the ball.
- 40:46SPEAKER_04: But sometimes really sometimes on a game on a Saturday, teams have done the homework where the the strikers maybe press from a couple of yards in a different angle and shut off the pass.
- 40:56SPEAKER_04: So now what do you do?
- 40:57SPEAKER_04: And then that's when you problem solve.
- 40:59SPEAKER_04: Do I mean like you step in and you make the same pass, or somebody else arrives, and like you can see that the the the plan is they working, so more people kind of problem solving on the pitch.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: I think we can uh Could he not have though could he not have because it seemed he wouldn't change?
- 41:15SPEAKER_03: So what I know what you're talking about would be Lavelle to Hayden, and then the trap would be set as soon as they give it to Hayden or they give it to Barclay, who was left footed, right footed, and let it was just the other team are going, well let them have the first one, as soon as they do the second one, we're there, yeah, and that within and you're just looking at Williamson going, as you've just said, wait till you get the players in the building who can do it.
- 41:36SPEAKER_03: So park that philosophy till you get them.
- 41:38SPEAKER_03: But he came he came into a squad that didn't really there was only I would say you, a couple of us who were comfortable with it, yeah.
- 41:45SPEAKER_04: And I thought to give them a T Monday, Friday.
- 41:48SPEAKER_04: Let me there was like and I know that's different, I know it's different with pressure and up against real opposition, but we were good enough to kind of to do it and understand.
- 41:58SPEAKER_04: It was just transferring a Saturday, and if you don't start well the first couple of games, then it's hard.
- 42:04SPEAKER_04: And Russell Martin's another one.
- 42:06SPEAKER_04: Anyone now has been round Russell Martin or listened to his stuff, he's phenomenal, like the way he presents and the way he coaches, and everybody says how amazing he is.
- 42:14SPEAKER_04: But if it doesn't go well right at the start, it it's hard to turn it around again.
- 42:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Nancy itself takes the exact same, comes in, changes everything, but then it's the old like everything they've done up to that point to get the job, that is what they've done, and they don't steer away from it.
- 42:30SPEAKER_04: It's this is what we're living breathe by.
- 42:34SPEAKER_04: So it must be hard to come in to a new club and say, right, everything I've done to now for for positive results, how do I just change that now and go now more route uh route one or what do you mean?
- 42:46SPEAKER_04: Like so it's hard, it's and I find it hard myself, like obviously still playing and doing my badges and stuff.
- 42:51SPEAKER_04: Where if I was to go in somewhere, I was like, would I rather have a full philosophy of being like right, this is how we play and this is it, everybody gets it, or are you able to kind of be maybe a half and half or I think the half and half for me at the minute are Wrexham, Newcastle, Sunderland just to pick.
- 43:10SPEAKER_03: I think they're the half and halves.
- 43:11SPEAKER_03: I think they play when you you can, but more often than not, you want to go forward first, direct at times, and yeah, you rarely see them playing for the bat and getting caught.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: I think Newcastle have a couple of goal kicks where purple point one way and he'll go diagonal, or then when he points the other way, he'll play out to shore and they'll play, but you rarely see them getting caught.
- 43:33SPEAKER_03: You don't see the Wrexham's, they fill their team with big lads, they're going up the league.
- 43:37SPEAKER_03: So I mean the team the West Ham way, the Spurs way, you know, you hear this all the time on radio stations.
- 43:43SPEAKER_03: What like what is the way?
- 43:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 43:45SPEAKER_04: But you see with Rochdale, ball position at the back, do you keep it and they they they try to probe you to press them and then they play through you or play over the top.
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: So they're a team obviously that's build built over the years and they've got results and they're up to the top, so I haven't It's positive.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: Do you know what I mean?
- 44:01SPEAKER_04: And it's a kind of same systems.
- 44:02SPEAKER_04: York is maybe similar.
- 44:04SPEAKER_04: Um Ian Watson, I spoke about earlier, who's uh South Shields, yeah.
- 44:08SPEAKER_04: They're up top of the top of the league, yeah.
- 44:10SPEAKER_04: And I went in and trained with them before uh uh signed in Northern Ireland, and it's all the same stuff, all the same stuff, and they just managed to get it to click.
- 44:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, maybe had a few more players that were more suited, or just got a couple of positive results at the start, and everybody bought into it.
- 44:24SPEAKER_04: Like, so I think it was hard to kind of pinpoint where they got it wrong because a lot of the stuff they were doing was was good, just maybe wrong wrong place at the wrong time.
- 44:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, as I said, many questions we put to Dylan about Williamson.
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: So we'll keep answering them over the weeks, but that was a good one.
- 44:40SPEAKER_03: Cheers for that question as well.
- 44:41SPEAKER_03: Top draw, Johnny.
- 44:43SPEAKER_03: So, weekend action in England and Scotland, Man City, Liverpool, VAR.
- 44:48SPEAKER_03: Let's talk VAR.
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: Not too much on VAR, but great game, really good game.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: Thought the title was Arsenal's in about the 80th minute, yeah.
- 44:58SPEAKER_03: Um, changed as I've said, good game, going at each other, shots, crosses, atmosphere.
- 45:07SPEAKER_02: Like, Vaug, just let that goal go away.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: I have seen it, yeah.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's bad, isn't it?
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, common sense should prevail.
- 45:14SPEAKER_02: But obviously it didn't, and and everyone's uproar about it again.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: But I mean, I don't know about users, but VAR for me, I just I'm just not a fan of it at all.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, I do I don't mind goal line technology and and certain things, but when they're taking forever, I mean, have you seen some players now they'll they'll celebrate and then they'll sort of have a look, won't they?
- 45:32SPEAKER_02: Is this gonna count or not?
- 45:33SPEAKER_02: It's like maybe borderline, offside, or things like that.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: So yeah, VAR for me is uh I'm not a fan at all.
- 45:41SPEAKER_04: I'm exactly the same, yeah.
- 45:42SPEAKER_04: I think the goal line stuff it's black and white in it, it's either over the line or it's not.
- 45:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there's no argument to get that either in or it's not.
- 45:48SPEAKER_04: Or the offsides, it's kinda yeah.
- 45:50SPEAKER_04: Now there's no kind of now your interpretation of it, it's offside or it's not, but the VR stuff, it's the ref's not even he's just at a ref the little the little things.
- 46:00SPEAKER_04: Do you know the little stupid little fellows?
- 46:02SPEAKER_04: See any any decision, it's not his.
- 46:04SPEAKER_04: Yesterday he's played on, obviously Haaland's pulled the boy back and it's in the back of the net.
- 46:09SPEAKER_04: He sees that as a bit of an advantage.
- 46:11SPEAKER_04: And I get VR needs to step in and correct it.
- 46:15SPEAKER_04: But for the game and people now Gary Neville spoke about it, like they kind of people at the game watching it and yeah, the the atmosphere, everything about it, it was phenomenal, phenomenal.
- 46:26SPEAKER_03: I think they're getting told, they're not getting asked to go to the the screen and ref they're getting told to go.
- 46:32SPEAKER_03: But for me, on that that goal, it was a ball through.
- 46:35SPEAKER_03: Lads try to pull Haaland first, Harland shrugged them off.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: Oh no, yeah, and then they pulled each other together.
- 46:41SPEAKER_03: But if you go off the first one, which is the Liverpool player trying to pull him back, just let the goal stand because it's it's it's and then they don't use lose the lad Liverpool for a game.
- 46:51SPEAKER_03: Man City get the extra goal, Pep's on about the goal difference, right?
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: Haaland as well, and he's got a tapping as well in the stream one, eh?
- 46:59SPEAKER_03: It was funny that uh it reminded me.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: So when the ball was played through and it's a gallop, Holland and the midfielder, we played air.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: Do you remember Julian Joechim?
- 47:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he was rapid by the way.
- 47:10SPEAKER_03: Rapid, right?
- 47:11SPEAKER_03: So we've got a game in the Pontons.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: So that anyone listen, the Reserves League used to be class, didn't it?
- 47:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:17SPEAKER_03: Back in the 90s and early 2000s, so if you weren't in Sunland's first team on your castles, anyone middles whereas you played in this Pontons league, and it was everywhere, so everyone would have their like the Midlands would have one, North East would have one, down south.
- 47:31SPEAKER_03: And there was always a couple of big hitters.
- 47:32SPEAKER_03: And when you played, you didn't play on a Saturday, every player played, so you were playing against big players.
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: So I was playing against Gaza, Andy Townsend, stuff like that.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: So we played against Leicester, sorry, Villa.
- 47:44SPEAKER_03: So I'm on the halfway line, we've got a corner, and they've went, Lummy, back then I was eighty, so I was quite quick.
- 47:49SPEAKER_03: They went, You stay on the on the halfway line, and I went, no bother.
- 47:52SPEAKER_03: So there's no one up, Villa, so I'm just there on my own, and then they've cleared it over my head, but our keepers rooted to his line, and I've turned and Joachim's sprinting from their box, and I went, I'm sound.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: But I was at New Ferrens Park where Durham playing, all you can hear is people going, Love me, love me, and then you just heard a collective 1,000 people.
- 48:13SPEAKER_03: He's coming.
- 48:15SPEAKER_03: I turned round and I was like that.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, and I've just fell on the ball just to like give a free kick.
- 48:21SPEAKER_03: We just fell on it, they go.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: I can't have the embarrassment of him nicking this up, but flip that one time for Carlisle.
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: I broke the offside trap, haven't I?
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm I'm going.
- 48:33SPEAKER_03: You've got to remember the story of you as well, is it at Wembley?
- 48:36SPEAKER_03: I'm through against Knott County, so I've only got like 30 yards to go it and go one-to-one, but I nam slow us out.
- 48:42SPEAKER_03: I've kind of like tucked it to the corner and then turned back.
- 48:46SPEAKER_03: So kind of what are you doing?
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: I'm like, points win prizes.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: Like because he would have caught us.
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: I didn't want to like embarrass myself.
- 48:53SPEAKER_02: I remember we uh we played Stevenage in the trophy final at um at Wembley, and I went on a sub for Barrow, is it?
- 49:00SPEAKER_02: For Barrow, yeah.
- 49:01SPEAKER_02: Um and we're winning 2-1, there's not long left, and they're really high on the halfway line, and I've got the ball, and I've I thought I'm just gonna knock this and go here.
- 49:11SPEAKER_02: But when I've done it, I've never thought that much, I've thought I might have messed up here.
- 49:16SPEAKER_02: So I've started chasing it, and to be fair, they'd all played like 90 minutes and extra time, so and half got away with it, and I've tried to just get there before the keeper.
- 49:26SPEAKER_02: If I was not the slowest man in football, I would have knocked it past him, but he it was a bit of a 50-50 in the end, and he tackled it, but it's the first and last time I'd done that one.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, I did it.
- 49:35SPEAKER_02: Do you know when you do you know when I've done it though?
- 49:36SPEAKER_02: I thought, oh, there's like to Wembley there's a big crowd, and I could be clean through here.
- 49:42SPEAKER_02: Got to say that.
- 49:42SPEAKER_03: But then people were thinking, is he sprinting or is he Don Hutchinson?
- 49:46SPEAKER_03: Was it remember Don Hutchinson like Everton, Liverpool, West Ham, Sunderland, Scotland?
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: He wasn't the quickest, but he's something sharp, and he was done.
- 49:54SPEAKER_03: I'm feeling sharp the day, watch this.
- 49:57SPEAKER_03: And you remember Lee Neal after wolves up there?
- 49:59SPEAKER_03: He knocked it past him.
- 50:06SPEAKER_03: We got past him, but the ball was like 10 yards in front, so he still had to get but he he it was quick past Neil, and he went, Neil just turned, ran back and got it.
- 50:16SPEAKER_03: Don't you ever take the fist like that again?
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: And like Bones used to call him just look, there's a knife, honestly.
- 50:23SPEAKER_03: You're still in some situations when you've got no no pace.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: A quick one for Leeds fans, Calvert Lewin.
- 50:32SPEAKER_03: Is there a conversation for England?
- 50:35SPEAKER_02: He wouldn't he keeps himself fit, that's the thing though, isn't it?
- 50:38SPEAKER_02: His fitness because he was Everton, wasn't he?
- 50:40SPEAKER_02: And he was involved with England, wasn't he?
- 50:42SPEAKER_02: And he was when he's fit and firing his he's top draw, like but it's always just been his fitness issues, hasn't it?
- 50:48SPEAKER_02: Because he he's one of them ones where you you know you look at certain players and you think they haven't played that much football in their career, and I think he sort of like comes in that problem.
- 50:56SPEAKER_02: I could be wrong, but there's certain ones you think I love to know how many games he's played and stuff, but when he gets regular regular football, he seems to score, and he's he's a right handful, isn't he?
- 51:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he is.
- 51:06SPEAKER_03: Um I I just hope the England squad we'll talk about this in depth leading up to it, but I just hope that the England manager like takes more forwards and drops the defence.
- 51:17SPEAKER_03: Phil Neville used to go because he's right and left footed, wasn't he?
- 51:20SPEAKER_03: But then they'd take another one.
- 51:20SPEAKER_03: I remember Matt Janssen got left out of the squad for the World Cup, he got told he was going, and then on the Saturday, and then the Monday they announced the squad and they took Martin Keone instead of Matt Jansen just to shore up the defence.
- 51:34SPEAKER_04: So depends what injuries and that as well, innit?
- 51:37SPEAKER_04: Bellingham got a hamstring, didn't he?
- 51:39SPEAKER_04: As well, I think it'd be alright for the summer, he'd definitely go.
- 51:41SPEAKER_04: But that forward there's phenomenal talent.
- 51:45SPEAKER_04: Oh, they're just Harry Kane is probably who maybe from now to the end of the season.
- 51:48SPEAKER_04: Who hits that kind of popple patch, innit?
- 51:51SPEAKER_04: Who's doing well?
- 51:52SPEAKER_03: A quick one, Virgil van Dijk.
- 51:55SPEAKER_03: Is he up there with Terry's, the Ferdinands, the Vidic, the Sol Campbells?
- 52:00SPEAKER_03: Because I thought he was, but somebody's just I don't know.
- 52:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I played with Big Virgil, so I didn't know.
- 52:06SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna say, yeah, did you play with him, yeah?
- 52:08SPEAKER_04: He's um not a bad one to say, is it at all?
- 52:10SPEAKER_04: Nah, he was he was top player, mate.
- 52:12SPEAKER_04: Celtic, honestly.
- 52:13SPEAKER_04: Like he he's kind of he's done it his full career, but you can see that kind of blasé, kind of I'm better than everybody attitude, do you know what I mean?
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: Um I think the Dutch not arrogance, but the they have a lot of the Dutch I've played with have got that single focus and kind of rate themselves.
- 52:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but he's but he knew like obviously in Scotland and he's he's a big dog, do you know what I mean?
- 52:37SPEAKER_04: And the size of him, like I don't know if you've been close to him, but he's absolutely huge.
- 52:41SPEAKER_04: Honestly, he's huge, yeah.
- 52:42SPEAKER_04: Massive guy, um and he's good players, and he's quick and stuff, but he had that kind of like if you knock it, I'll just beat you for pace, power, everything.
- 52:51SPEAKER_04: If you put it in the air, I'll go one every header.
- 52:53SPEAKER_04: But now, sometimes where there was one a couple of weeks ago when the ball's at the back post and he's kind of thought that it was gonna go out and he's kind of left it, and the butt he keeps it in and then he looks stupid, do you know what I mean?
- 53:03SPEAKER_04: Where because he's not like made sure the danger was kind of over.
- 53:07SPEAKER_04: So he's he's had that, but more now that Liverpool are kind of struggling a little bit, it it's on him, do you know what I mean?
- 53:14SPEAKER_04: Especially at the back where before, like you you guys will run up to him and turning back and just passing it back the way because they knew they weren't the way they were.
- 53:22SPEAKER_04: They didn't get cribbed the last for three seasons or something, didn't he?
- 53:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um but yeah, a couple good luck chat to that in Voljure.
- 53:31SPEAKER_04: Oh wow, but yeah, he's he's he's had some good games, and then there's games where you think like he's maybe switched off something.
- 53:41SPEAKER_04: We've now got Virgil.
- 53:44SPEAKER_04: It's been a long time.
- 53:45SPEAKER_04: I'll um I'll need to send him on Instagram TV.
- 53:50SPEAKER_03: Right, um let's go kind of back on to Carlisle, not Tuesday night, but next Saturday, Forest Green away, which has kind of turned into through Robbie Savage a grudge match.
- 54:06SPEAKER_03: So last game he got abuse from the paddock.
- 54:09SPEAKER_03: I will just say Robbie Savage, I met him before during and after, and he could not have been nicer.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: He anyone who wanted to autograph selfie, he done it um half time he had a word with my partner's son in the midst of a big game.
- 54:28SPEAKER_03: Just fantastic.
- 54:30SPEAKER_03: But I do I have played against him, I do know what he's about sometimes.
- 54:35SPEAKER_03: He probably didn't need to be out next to the crowd for that long before kickoff and staring into it.
- 54:41SPEAKER_03: So I think I can see why Carl Elsport has he's there to he's a pantomime.
- 54:45SPEAKER_03: He loves it, exactly what he does.
- 54:47SPEAKER_03: He loves it.
- 54:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he loves it.
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: It's been proven that that wasn't any kind of never crossed the line, never crossed the line.
- 54:54SPEAKER_03: Maybe someone did, but sometimes there's a football, and I always remember James Phillips on radio company always says this to me, says, I say it's football, isn't it?
- 55:02SPEAKER_03: When you're being abused, and he went, You shouldn't be you shouldn't take it.
- 55:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he does say that, Jerry.
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: He firmly believes that he goes, I don't understand why you say sometimes it's fine, it's football getting called this, getting called that.
- 55:12SPEAKER_03: But I think we're just you just part and parcel of the game, innit?
- 55:16SPEAKER_04: Like you don't get me wrong, you can go across a line with some stuff, especially where I'm from in Glasgow and some of the big games, sectarian and stuff, and it's both sets, do you know what I mean?
- 55:25SPEAKER_04: It's just a kind of way of life, and you are just expected to sit there and take it.
- 55:29SPEAKER_04: Like I've had it a few times, do you know what I mean?
- 55:32SPEAKER_04: Where police and the stewards and stuff are kind of standing watching it, and and I probably get why they don't want to make a scene as well, because if you start ripping people out the fans and uh the crowds and it can cause a disturbance, but um as players you probably are just expected to take it in the chin.
- 55:48SPEAKER_02: But he he he loves it, doesn't he?
- 55:50SPEAKER_02: I remember we we played Wrexham away for Port Vale, someone went down injured.
- 55:53SPEAKER_02: We had a corner, the song's getting louder and louder, so it looks to like full stand of Wrexham fans just pointing at me, you fat bastard.
- 56:02SPEAKER_02: But they kept singing it because the dad was down injured for ages.
- 56:04SPEAKER_02: I'm thinking, please get up because I'm getting the pellets here.
- 56:07SPEAKER_02: Hit the first man.
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: I've had a few, I've had a few honestly taking the full stand, giving me I was taking the corner against Nottingham Forest, and I was running up, and this kid from this crowd was going, wasn't hitting that football.
- 56:25SPEAKER_03: When you've done three in a row the manager's even saying you better whip this in with paper, I'm gonna float it.
- 56:32SPEAKER_04: There was once in the last minute or so of like everybody's up and like your last chance to get rolling and you think I'll put a bit of snow in this here and make sure I missed the first man.
- 56:41SPEAKER_03: I was fuming at once, this fan shouting at this ginger bastard.
- 56:44SPEAKER_03: Everyone knows him, strawberry blonde.
- 56:46SPEAKER_03: Here we go.
- 56:46SPEAKER_03: You uh you played with Savage's son though, yeah, yeah.
- 56:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you come in, um looks like him, moves like him, yeah, yeah, with the hair and stuff.
- 56:55SPEAKER_04: He's a good player, he's a good player, yeah.
- 56:57SPEAKER_04: He erm He came in at a tough time, obviously.
- 57:00SPEAKER_04: Forest Green, and I think that was probably one his first loan, I think, from the United.
- 57:04SPEAKER_04: You can see he's got quality, do you know what I mean?
- 57:06SPEAKER_04: He's he was at Man United as a kid and stuff and he's got quality, but at the time we were kinda a difficult um part of the season and going away to some like your bolt ones and stuff, and um I'm trying to think of who else, but Plymouth Plymouth and stuff were like top of the league, so yeah, it was it was a difficult time, but he's a good player and he he he done alright and he got his cell was it uh Redden he went.
- 57:30SPEAKER_04: Four and a half year deals, yeah.
- 57:31SPEAKER_03: Fair leaving man, because he got a he got a game for Manu, didn't he?
- 57:34SPEAKER_03: He did and then quite quick, his dad commentating or something, wasn't it?
- 57:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um no, he he he was he was just a kid, like a proper kid when he was with us, and he's obviously matured.
- 57:45SPEAKER_04: And um I've not really kept tabs on how he's doing this season or whatever, but I know he was at Redden for a few years there.
- 57:51SPEAKER_03: Going back to Savage, uh no one had even mentioned him for the Blackburn job at this point.
- 57:56SPEAKER_03: No one, right?
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: And he's got his social media team with Forrest Green, sit down and he's went.
- 58:01SPEAKER_03: Basically, you can tell the first question is Robbie, you've been linked with the Blackburn.
- 58:06SPEAKER_03: He went, No, I'm going up.
- 58:07SPEAKER_03: You know, these things happen, didn't rule himself out.
- 58:08SPEAKER_03: He's basically he's basically said that day, not even penciling for an interview, come and interview me about the blackburn job.
- 58:15SPEAKER_04: I was like the manager with you skip, wasn't it?
- 58:17SPEAKER_04: You need to get a phone call saying, I know you think you're coming here, but we're not interested.
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: We don't want you.
- 58:22SPEAKER_03: He's created his own speculation, fair play.
- 58:24SPEAKER_03: But yeah, grudge match next Saturday, another one we've got to show up for.
- 58:28SPEAKER_03: Have you played that or not?
- 58:30SPEAKER_03: I played at Forest Green, it's not good, is it?
- 58:33SPEAKER_03: The old, old right.
- 58:35SPEAKER_03: So I'd say for Carlisle.
- 58:36SPEAKER_03: So I'd left Barnsley, signed for Carlisle to have this season in the sun in the comp this one and only season in the National League.
- 58:42SPEAKER_03: Um, as I said earlier, Barnesley was still paying my wages, and I was getting brown envelopes elsewhere.
- 58:48SPEAKER_03: That's another story.
- 58:49SPEAKER_03: And we got there, and it was like no disrespect, it was it was worse than Carlisle City.
- 58:55SPEAKER_03: Like, not worse, it was the on par with the Carlisle City, like one stand, a little bit of shedding.
- 59:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, very non-league, like so.
- 59:01SPEAKER_03: I've literally went like a pre-season friendly against Porto to their end as well.
- 59:06SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it was it was a it was an interesting season, that's why we had to get out once.
- 59:11SPEAKER_03: You couldn't do it once.
- 59:12SPEAKER_03: The new the new ground, well it's not so new now, but it's up that hoe, isn't it?
- 59:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean you I mean I just did I it's just one of the grounds I didn't like playing at.
- 59:19SPEAKER_02: I was I mean I got I got took off.
- 59:21SPEAKER_02: I played there three times, got took off every time, lost twice, drew once, so that's maybe why.
- 59:25SPEAKER_02: But it was just one of them places where I don't know, I mean I've commentated there for Barrow as well, and I just wasn't keen on it.
- 59:32SPEAKER_03: When you commentated, it's all vegan stuff and all, isn't it?
- 59:34SPEAKER_03: It's tight as well.
- 59:35SPEAKER_03: Oh, it is tight, it's tight by the way.
- 59:38SPEAKER_03: That is the tightest commentary box.
- 59:40SPEAKER_03: Did they give you some food?
- 59:41SPEAKER_03: I did, I tried to well, you know what?
- 59:42SPEAKER_04: I knocked it back.
- 59:43SPEAKER_04: I had a bit we we had to eat it during the week.
- 59:46SPEAKER_04: Well, during the week, yeah.
- 59:48SPEAKER_04: Well, we didn't sit you down and force you, but the only food they would provide was vegan.
- 59:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 59:51SPEAKER_04: Honestly, it was an it was a nightmare for the week.
- 59:53SPEAKER_04: Did anyone knock knock it back because of that?
- 59:56SPEAKER_04: Well, we used to we used to in a Friday go to Nando's, so we did the away games.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_04: Do you mean knock it back as in to sign for them?
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_03: Um were you there with Johnny Parkin?
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_03: No.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_03: No.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_03: So Johnny Parkin again under the cushion heard from him already.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: He signed.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_03: Did I?
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_03: And he didn't get on course, he didn't get on board with it.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_04: What did you say?
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_04: You think I played with him?
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_04: I just thought he was late there.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_03: He was there, he was there as like a veteran, wasn't he?
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was gonna say, I'm not I'm not that old.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_04: No, no, he was like veteran veteran.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_04: Okay, um yeah, but they they provided the vegan even obviously some hotels you would go to weren't the the the greatest hotels on a Friday and asking them to provide vegan food.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_04: What even then?
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_04: Even the hotels, yeah, you could imagine the standard of the food that was and Big Dunk came in.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_04: Big Dunk, um yeah, I think he was in the same boat.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_04: He's he'd done a funny promo the the promotion was it the what was the the rules or something?
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_03: It was like he'd done an advert in Ferguson about the vegan food, and you could tell you could tell why he doesn't want it to eat.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_04: Have you ever seen his first interview with Sky when he just signed?
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_04: It's hilarious, and it's the the owner, Dale Vince.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_04: Obviously, he's the one that's driving it all.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um, it's hilarious, mate.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_04: Honestly, he's got like I think they're eating like a pie or something, something like that, and he's trying it and he's like, Oh, it's bro, you know that like acting up, and they've obviously talked about like the world getting hot, he's like, the world's getting getting warmer, we all need to do a bit and all that, and I'm thinking big dump and stuff like that.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_04: That's not him.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_03: You'll see it and just reckon they went back in and half it was in the bed.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but quick one, and what we wanted to touch on this, Chris, because we're quick because we're um big advocates for mental health, aren't we?
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_03: And things like that.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_03: And just going back to the Robbie Savage thing, you know what whether we said anything or not, the support as he did mention it had got him down and some of the abuse he gets and stuff.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_03: But you're the latest player, Dylan, like obviously still playing.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_03: We probably missed out on the social media, didn't we?
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_03: Thankfully, yeah.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_03: We we knew we had played crap because when we walked off we got booed.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_02: I said this to Dylan, we had forums, didn't we?
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_02: Remember, you have to used to fire the big computer up and go on that I couldn't go on them forums, mate.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_02: I couldn't go on them, they were brutal, but yeah, you can't miss uh but kind of we knew, didn't we?
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_03: The reaction of the crowd.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_03: But now you can turn your phone on and then you can just see everywhere how people think you're putting it good and bad, but is there any players or any instances where you can see it's really getting someone down?
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think over the years, um there's there's probably been a few that have kind of I've had conversations with about the reactions and stuff, and you can see it bothers them.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_04: Do you know?
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_04: I've had it before as a player as well.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_04: Like and did it bother you?
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_04: It did, it did.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_04: Um so with hibs and stuff, because I was picked a little bit of Kaleo to fair as well, like picked up a few niggles that were keeping me out, and um and then obviously people saying he's always injured, he's all and and it's you kinda you you know that you've picked up quite a few injuries over your career, and they're entitled to kind of say it, but it's no nice reading about it, is it?
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_04: It's not like commenting commenting um comments on your obviously social media stuff about um always being injured or wh whatever it is.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_04: So erm, I think for like 20 minutes, half an hour, you you you can see that it does affect your mood a little bit, do you know what I mean?
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_04: It puts in a bit of a downer, and you kinda snap out of it.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_04: So and that's me kinda at the end of my career, do you know what I mean?
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_04: Like so I can imagine like young kids coming through now and actively looking at it.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, actively looking for it, and um and the other way as well, like a lot of the boys kinda go on looking for validation and how they played and stuff, do you know what I mean?
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_04: Like on social media, it's like the manager.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_03: Young kids who have uh have come off and someone's given unbelievable and started their own fan page and that and they've been brutal and you like it's got the other way where they think they're doing enough and you like it.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_04: But you're just setting yourself up because you know it's gonna happen as soon as you have a bad game or the the team goes through a rough a rough spell that it's gonna pile on, do you know what I mean?
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_04: And then it's it's difficult to kinda to see these comments, but it does, but I think it's just society now, innit?
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_04: But we can have it and like you kind of get brought up with it, so you you need to try and learn to kind of use it positively.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_04: Did it used to bother you?
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um of course it does.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, you don't like hearing negative stuff about yourself to you, but it's uh I just got the same old, same old, too slow, can't run, too heavy, week in, week out.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_02: And then in the end, it was just like oh, here we go again.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_03: So going off last week, Kenny Dad at least warned your mum and dad, stop feeding you like what's you know what?
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_02: I'm giving myself a bit of a hard rap here.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_02: I mean I would listen, you can't be a professional footballer, not be fit.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_02: It's just my body shape.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_03: And how long was your career?
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_03: 14 years?
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_02: It was enough years, so it I must have been doing something right sometimes.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_03: I'll tell you what happened when we were centre midfielders back in our day.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_03: Who did you have to be?
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_03: You had to be six foot three, petite, Vieira, and that's what you were.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_03: You're an athlete, you could play, you could mix it.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_03: Minute I retired, what happened?
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_03: Pep comes with a three, like that's right up my street.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_03: Loads of the ball right up my street.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_03: Right then, to finish off, back onto Carlisle United.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_03: Tomorrow night, Scunny.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_02: Tough again, like we said before Rochdale last week.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_02: We said the next three games are really tough, and we've had our opinion on Rochdale.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_02: Um that's being and gone now.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, by all accounts, the moon in the cam should be alright because they were quite after the game.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_02: The interviewers I listened to.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_02: Mark Hughes was pretty pleased with with what he saw.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_02: Um, this was apart from the the set piece he he was on about the the game plan nearly going to plan.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, Rochdale, uh sorry, Scunthorpe.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_02: Um I think it's gonna be like you say, gonna be very tough.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_02: They're gonna be in the playoffs, are as forest screen are as well.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_02: But I just think Tuesday they've got to go and I think they've got to go and win.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_03: Which it just seems like we're waiting on the playoffs now, isn't it?
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_03: So now we've got to go and please the supporters, get everyone back on side.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_03: Hughes, I think, needs a result.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_03: Hughes needs a result just to get the fans back in the fans.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, a bit of a setup for the playoffs as well.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: Between the last the last week, probably three then teams are going to run about you.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_04: So again what I said earlier about that kind of mindset of getting into these games, if you go down if you don't lay a glove on them and then at the end of the season when everyone's expecting you to, and these teams are not they're not gonna think of you the same way, whereas if you actually have a go and express yourself in these games and see how you can get a result and then now instead of just sitting behind the ball, it doesn't look like they're gonna get anything, so now they want to go lay a glove on them and now you've got a marker.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_03: That's exactly laying a glove on them on Tuesday.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_03: I think whatever the thoughts were, I think Satter probably dictates in the reaction to it that we've got to go on the front foot, hopefully Linny's back.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_03: I'd like to see Georgie back in as well.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_03: Uh but I like Armstrong as well, so just trying to fit plenty of forward players in, but also keeping it tight at the back.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_03: And I I think the window, I think we need a couple of players in.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_03: I think statement signings to go, you know what, come on, come to us to the end of the season, enjoy yourself this promotion push.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_04: See, um just touching on it, I obviously I've not seen a lot of the games, but see midfield wise, we spoke about us wanting to get on the ball and play and stuff.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_04: As a midfield, they're now good enough to go and dominate games.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_03: I think Gilead's the most comfortable and the rest uh Jagalus when he goes in there is neat and tidy, but he's not gonna dominate a game, he's gonna nick a ball off you.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_03: McAdam know, but I think McAdam's strength comes in arriving in the box.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I don't think we've got enough midfielders in there who can dominate a game.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_03: I think Wheeling's a tidy player, but I just don't think he's strong enough.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_03: Um but I'd love him to because his he seems like kind of with an attitude, good attitude, good lad.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_03: I kind of want to get him put in the team, but every time he's in the team, we don't get a result.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_04: He probably needs a couple similar to him though, he like dominate the ball.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_04: So he's probably gonna in there with boys that are more like want to kind of go forward, do you know what I mean?
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_04: And just get the ball in the final third.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_04: Whereas if he was in there with a few kind of ball players that they can dominate it and pass and move, and he's brilliant or that's right.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_03: When we when we talk about bow tang, York he does it all.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he can go up, down, he can dominate the game, he can play a six, he can play an eight, he can play a ten if you wanted to, but yeah.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we'll see.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_03: So we will be back after the Forest Green game.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, we've gone down there and turned them over.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, Robbie's nice to Marcuse and he's not over to Blackburn.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_02: He's uh like you say, it's a big it's a big week for them, isn't it?
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_02: Um after losing Saturday and some of the reactions off the fans and stuff, and they want to especially this Tuesday, I think they're they need to get a good win, but like you say, play on the front foot.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, bit of excitement, um, get a bit of a good feeling back about the place and and then kick on to Forest Green away, which will be very tough as well.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_03: Aye, and I'm on another freebie, and I'm gonna beat my record of 13 plates.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_02: I bet you do, no.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_02: Oh, we'll have to have a right though.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_03: Uh right then, that's it for episode two.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_03: Another big thank you to EEC Limited, John, Henry, and Toby.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_03: Good luck in the County Cup Morton's West quarter final, March the first.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_03: Might have a trip out.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_03: And thank you to Cumbria Van Seals and Lee Hoolikan.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_03: We love you, Lee.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_03: We do.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_03: We'll tell that uh we'll tell that story one day about that.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_03: Thank you to both, and thank you for everyone for listening, and we'll be back next week.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_03: Cheers.
