- 0:14Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's Emily a body here with five Minute Friday
- 0:19Speaker 1: from Hurdle. I have an exciting announcement this Friday. What
- 0:25Speaker 1: day are we on here? May fifteenth is the first
- 0:29Speaker 1: installment of the five Minute Friday newsletter that goes with
- 0:34Speaker 1: this episode. So I have a new newsletter. It's called
- 0:38Speaker 1: the Weekly Hurdle. It's going to come out on Fridays.
- 0:41Speaker 1: And with the newsletter, the idea is that it will
- 0:43Speaker 1: follow the same format as Five Minute Friday. So you
- 0:46Speaker 1: can read the newsletter or you can listen to the
- 0:49Speaker 1: podcast and either way, just looking for a different way
- 0:52Speaker 1: to connect with all of you. Of course, you'll also
- 0:55Speaker 1: there get my content pics, and with time, I will
- 1:00Speaker 1: expand this to a little bit of a subscription model
- 1:03Speaker 1: so that Hurdle newsletter subscribers can get special awesome stuff
- 1:08Speaker 1: in their inbox that free newsletter consumers will not receive.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Of course, I'm still figuring this all out. I'm brand
- 1:14Speaker 1: new to the platform that I'm using. It's called Substack,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and I've heard really great things, So stick with me.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And if you want to subscribe either, head on over
- 1:23Speaker 1: to Hurdle dot us and you'll get a prompt to
- 1:25Speaker 1: do so over there, or click on over to the
- 1:28Speaker 1: show notes and there will be a link in there
- 1:30Speaker 1: to subscribe to Hurdle Weekly. So for this week's five
- 1:34Speaker 1: minute Friday story, I did a lot of reflecting this
- 1:38Speaker 1: week and really this month, because at the beginning of
- 1:41Speaker 1: the month, or right before the beginning of the month,
- 1:43Speaker 1: I would say I was mad, okay, well maybe mad
- 1:47Speaker 1: as a stretch. I was frustrated. For the past few years.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Every single Thursday morning, I would wake up at five
- 1:54Speaker 1: forty five am. I'd linger around in bed until five
- 1:57Speaker 1: fifty two ish, then get up, pack my bag and
- 2:01Speaker 1: make my way down the four flights of stairs, out
- 2:04Speaker 1: the door, and down three different escalators toward the New
- 2:08Speaker 1: York City Subway at eighty sixth Street on their ber
- 2:10Speaker 1: East Side. And now i'd emerge from the que train
- 2:13Speaker 1: at Harold Square. I'd be finishing up my coffee in
- 2:16Speaker 1: an episode of The Daily before walking into Nike's New
- 2:19Speaker 1: York headquarters. There at promptly seven am, I would join
- 2:25Speaker 1: a handful of journalists for what we came to call
- 2:29Speaker 1: Media Miles. And this was a weekly run that was
- 2:32Speaker 1: fun because camaraderie and challenging because we had great access
- 2:37Speaker 1: to Nike's top coaches on the regular. Now we have
- 2:41Speaker 1: run in everything. We've run in the rain and the snow,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and the wind and the sun, and we've run in
- 2:46Speaker 1: good times and bad times and during layoff times. Because publishing,
- 2:52Speaker 1: we've celebrated personal bests, and so many of the Media
- 2:55Speaker 1: Miles Squad runners they've crossed off marathons from their bucket lists,
- 3:00Speaker 1: largely due in part to the motivation that they have
- 3:03Speaker 1: garnered from this weekly meetup. It's inspiring, really, But when
- 3:08Speaker 1: coronavirus took hold over life as we know it in
- 3:10Speaker 1: quarantine began and many of us started to order way
- 3:13Speaker 1: too many pairs of sweatpants online, this gathering was honestly
- 3:17Speaker 1: one of the first things to be put on hold,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and it was also one of the things that I
- 3:22Speaker 1: missed the most from my regular routine. Now, don't get
- 3:26Speaker 1: me wrong, there are other weekly constants, like heading into
- 3:29Speaker 1: my twenty fifth Street we work office and seeing my
- 3:32Speaker 1: favorite community leaders, or sitting at the dimly lit bar
- 3:35Speaker 1: at Bar Preami with a glass of Barillo and hand
- 3:37Speaker 1: debating between the Bucatini or the Natella Sunday. I missed
- 3:41Speaker 1: those two, but in New York City. Your friends become
- 3:45Speaker 1: your family, one big, diverse, all over the place family.
- 3:52Speaker 1: And while I am so lucky to have made friends
- 3:54Speaker 1: in my time here, I've just never had one big
- 3:57Speaker 1: group of friends that did everything together. No Charlotte, Samantha Carrey,
- 4:01Speaker 1: Miranda situation where we meet up at the diner every
- 4:04Speaker 1: other Tuesday to talk about everything from the fling of
- 4:07Speaker 1: the week to work woes. But the media miles in
- 4:11Speaker 1: a weird way. This group of humans, it kind of
- 4:13Speaker 1: felt a little bit like that, and the good and
- 4:17Speaker 1: the bad times. I kept showing up and my family
- 4:21Speaker 1: and I just put air quotes around that talking to
- 4:23Speaker 1: this microphone. They would be there waiting, without a doubt,
- 4:27Speaker 1: the family. They wanted you to be your best, whether
- 4:30Speaker 1: it was on a run or elsewhere. And to me,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I just I think that's pretty special. Anyway, back to
- 4:36Speaker 1: the whole frustrated part, So the feelings of aggression, they
- 4:39Speaker 1: really didn't come from this year fact that we could
- 4:41Speaker 1: no longer meet up. As May one approached, we were
- 4:44Speaker 1: offered the opportunity to participate in a virtual running challenge
- 4:48Speaker 1: in the Nike Run Club app, and it would be
- 4:50Speaker 1: to log fifty miles in May. Now, if you've never
- 4:54Speaker 1: used the Nike Run Club app, it's really cool. You
- 4:56Speaker 1: can go in there and create your own challenge, challenge
- 4:59Speaker 1: whoever you want, set it for as long as you
- 5:01Speaker 1: want to go, as far as you want, and all
- 5:03Speaker 1: of the parameters. It's all up to you. So leading
- 5:06Speaker 1: up to this challenge, according to my garment, I was
- 5:09Speaker 1: running between thirty and forty miles a week in February
- 5:13Speaker 1: and March, a little less between, like twenty and thirty.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Come April, I ran twenty six miles total. I was sidelined,
- 5:23Speaker 1: as I've talked about here before, with some discomfort in
- 5:25Speaker 1: my left glute, my left performance, and I struggled so
- 5:29Speaker 1: much with wanting to indulge in the thing that feeds
- 5:32Speaker 1: my soul versus taking a step back for the betterment
- 5:36Speaker 1: of my body. I was on my fourth week of
- 5:40Speaker 1: no running when the challenge came through my inbox, and
- 5:44Speaker 1: so yeah, I was frustrated. How would I do this
- 5:48Speaker 1: with how things are now? I asked myself, Am I
- 5:51Speaker 1: capable of this? I can't even run. We won't be together,
- 5:54Speaker 1: it's not the same. I had so many complaints complaining
- 6:00Speaker 1: stage one and I did a lot of it to myself.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I wrote a slew of expletive filled rants in my journals.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I vented on the lightly lined pages about the things
- 6:09Speaker 1: that weren't. But by the time May one rolled around,
- 6:13Speaker 1: I had to make a commitment to myself. I would
- 6:17Speaker 1: stop complaining about the thing I couldn't change and recognize
- 6:21Speaker 1: the facts. So these were the facts I wanted to participate.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I shouldn't be running a ton, so I decided to
- 6:31Speaker 1: start walking. Even if every single one of those fifty
- 6:36Speaker 1: May miles were at a seventeen minute mile coffee sipping pace,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I would get them done. I knew it. I would
- 6:43Speaker 1: be included and I would feel like I was back
- 6:46Speaker 1: with my family again. The scenario was a little bit
- 6:51Speaker 1: different than before. Granted, no alarm or eerily quiet subway
- 6:55Speaker 1: ride necessary. I'd open my eyes naturally when the sun
- 6:58Speaker 1: and the sounds of the birds chirping perched on my
- 7:01Speaker 1: fire escape permeated through the windowpane. Around six eighteen am,
- 7:05Speaker 1: to be specific, I'd put up a kettle, do a
- 7:08Speaker 1: series of stretches, and change into a sports bra and
- 7:11Speaker 1: leggings and get going with a tumbler of coffee in
- 7:14Speaker 1: my right hand. I'd walk down the four flights of
- 7:17Speaker 1: stairs and get on my way, not just on Thursdays,
- 7:22Speaker 1: though every day. With time, I became less mad about
- 7:27Speaker 1: the difference between my new routine and my old routine,
- 7:29Speaker 1: and in fact I even came to enjoy the regularity.
- 7:32Speaker 1: The familiar scent of fresh tool of signaling springs descent
- 7:37Speaker 1: on New York, something that doesn't wane if you're not
- 7:39Speaker 1: moving at a sub nine minute mile pace. The sweet
- 7:43Speaker 1: sip of my home brew, which always spills a little
- 7:46Speaker 1: bit regardless of just how careful I am. The familiar
- 7:50Speaker 1: faces of Dorman waiting for someone, anyone to greet as
- 7:55Speaker 1: foot traffic is at an all time lull, and with
- 7:59Speaker 1: time I'm the miles they started to rack up, and
- 8:02Speaker 1: once I crossed the thirty mile threshold, I got the
- 8:05Speaker 1: clear from my physical therapist to do a run walk
- 8:09Speaker 1: in oh Man. Was I excited, And on the final
- 8:13Speaker 1: day which would bring me over the fifty mile mark,
- 8:16Speaker 1: I finished off the effort with a five minute stretch
- 8:20Speaker 1: of running, pushing the pace. As I saw my watch
- 8:23Speaker 1: tick past my daily five k goal. I started hesitant,
- 8:30Speaker 1: I started with excuses. I finished optimistic. I finished period.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Things just don't always go as we'd hope, But when
- 8:42Speaker 1: you're willing to accept them as they are, move forward
- 8:45Speaker 1: with what you have and do what you can, there
- 8:48Speaker 1: are always going to be lessons to learn and something
- 8:52Speaker 1: to gain. As I walked back up the four floorist
- 8:56Speaker 1: my apartment with an iced coffee reward in hand, I
- 8:59Speaker 1: felt grateful at a hole for the slow miles and
- 9:02Speaker 1: the fast miles, my New York City family and the
- 9:07Speaker 1: opportunity to keep pushing through. So this week's prompt, what's
- 9:14Speaker 1: something you've been dreading that you can do this week
- 9:18Speaker 1: and take hold of the opportunity to learn from Again?
- 9:22Speaker 1: What is something that you've been dreading that you can
- 9:26Speaker 1: do this week and take hold of the opportunity to
- 9:30Speaker 1: learn from all Right, so content picks. I took a
- 9:34Speaker 1: virtual cooking class with the New York City Wine and
- 9:37Speaker 1: Food Festival alongside Daniel Holtzman and Michael Churnell. You've heard
- 9:42Speaker 1: from Chernelle before on the pod. These are the co
- 9:45Speaker 1: founders of the Meatball Shop and it was so much fun.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I highly recommend they're doing a string of these for
- 9:52Speaker 1: the foreseeable future, as long as we are inside. And
- 9:55Speaker 1: I also purchased the Meatball Shop cookbook on Amazon immediately
- 10:00Speaker 1: following the class. You know, I'm Italian. I have that classic, awesome,
- 10:05Speaker 1: big Italian family, and I said to my father before
- 10:08Speaker 1: we took this class, I feel like I have never
- 10:10Speaker 1: made really great meatballs, and now I can confidently say
- 10:14Speaker 1: I have made really great meatballs. A new podcast for
- 10:19Speaker 1: you to check out, Headspace just launched, Radio Headspace. It's
