- 0:00Carli Jewel, pop rocker from Melbourne, Australia. I've got a new song
- 0:05out, sad Girl, and yeah got a band as well with Shannon Mick
- 0:13and Mars and uh yeah beautiful. Carli, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:21Thanks so much. We got there in the end. It took it's probably
- 0:25for twelve hours nearly to get it done, but we got there just behind
- 0:32the scenes about our stuff up, spying the scenes at all. So,
- 0:37as you mentioned, you're releasing your cracking new single, said Girl this Friday,
- 0:41June of fourteen. So how you feel about it? I am so
- 0:46excited because I've been sitting on this song for months now, like since last
- 0:51year, I believe, And yeah, it's just just knowing how it turned
- 1:00out was really exciting. And yeah, just to be able to share.
- 1:03It's just waiting and waiting and waiting, and yeah, I think, Yeah,
- 1:07I'm excited now you know, I've got a label behind me and heaps
- 1:12of cool stuff coming up. Well she'll talk about later, and yeah,
- 1:15it's just like now's the right time to get this song out. So I'm
- 1:19pleased. I held onto it and yeah, things come to those who wait.
- 1:23They say that's it and it's a cool song. It is. I
- 1:27was just about to say that, so tell us a bit more about said
- 1:30girl from a musical point of view and what you're going for well with that
- 1:37song. I guess, you know, I guess I think about myself as
- 1:44a songwriter a lot, and I'm like, I'm known to you know,
- 1:48cross over to that kind of dark, sad stuff, but I've always made
- 1:51it rock and you know, very blended genres together. And yeah, I
- 1:59just kind of wanted to write a song about me, I guess, really
- 2:04really about me. And I was like, well, I've always it's been
- 2:07my greatest superpower to be a sad person and have so much life experience and
- 2:14having so many things happened, you know that I've been you know, hard
- 2:16to get through and traumatizing and all that kind of stuff. And I was
- 2:22just like, you know what, I just I love doing what I do
- 2:24and I don't care if I'm a sad girl or not, Like you can't
- 2:30you know, you can still have fun with it. And I just really
- 2:34wanted I love pop music, and I you know, I guess with the
- 2:38first album, I really did like the hard hit him rock and this time
- 2:44when I went to work with Stuart. I was like, you know,
- 2:46I want to make a pop rock album, you know, I want that
- 2:50pop, that that love of dance and you know, jumping around having a
- 2:53good time to really come through. You know, it's it's all about the
- 2:57good times now it is. Indeed. Now you say, Sad Girl is
- 3:01about you and your life, But how does the song progresses? It goes
- 3:06through like you a happy girl by the end of it? Oh yeah,
- 3:09all the way. I'm happy from the start because it's just like, you
- 3:14know, I might be a sad girl singing sad songs, but you don't
- 3:17have to like me. And I don't give a you know, I'm just
- 3:24having fun with it and I'm just doing what I love. And it is
- 3:28a really happy song, like I'm proud to be who I am, and
- 3:31you know, it's hard to say that you're proud of yourself, and I
- 3:35really am. And you know, my grandfather taught me so much and when
- 3:38he passed away, it was just my mission to use absolutely everything he taught
- 3:45me and just go for it. Now I got to carry that, you
- 3:49know, it's my atturnt to follow at his footsteps, and I reckon he'll
- 3:52be proud of this, even the big swear word in it, as long
- 3:55as it has a bloody good. Hookie used to say to me, I'm
- 3:59telling you right now, songs got the hooks good. Now. It is
- 4:03still a rock song at its core, but it's not as full as what
- 4:05people expect from you, Like I'll cut short and stay it's a ballad,
- 4:10but it did. It's a lot more even champoed and construction than people are
- 4:14used to from you. Yeah, because I like to like go down a
- 4:17bit of a journey in some of my songs, and yeah, like these
- 4:21ones, I kind of wanted to just be straightforward, like you know that
- 4:25that very pop kind of rock sound and just you know, make it very
- 4:30cool, cooler than before. Well said down, it's said girl a standalone
- 4:38single or is it part of a bigger album picture. Well, I just
- 4:42went in to you know, record my first five tracks, and you know,
- 4:46I put them together and kind of have them there ready to either maybe
- 4:51someone might say, hey, like this girl writes or right songs and you
- 4:55know, believe in me and want to help jump on board, or you
- 4:58know, I'm always kind of of working away with a bigger picture in my
- 5:01head. You know, to get songs done and you know, present them
- 5:04out. And I was pretty lucky that, you know, that opportunity actually
- 5:10came around by having these five songs. And I wasn't really sure what it
- 5:15was going to be, you know, but I knew once I started working
- 5:17with Stuart, I wouldn't work with anyone else. Like he said, the
- 5:21bar so high that I was like, I'll be back to do the rest
- 5:26of the songs. I continue to write while ever we're here. Sorry,
- 5:31that's it's Stewart, It's it's you and I now. And yeah, it'll
- 5:34be it'll come be an album. Yeah, and that is that song a
- 5:40good representation of what to expect for the rest of it? Or is that
- 5:42just a part of it? Yeah? Look, I think because I write
- 5:47from feeling like I don't kind of box it in, like you know,
- 5:50there's just going to be that style of every single song. There's there's some
- 5:55big ballads coming, there's a you know, big piano kind of set sound
- 6:00song, and yeah, there's a little bit of everything. But it's it's
- 6:04it's happy, it's it's a bit more poppy. Now. You spoke about
- 6:10opportunities before and putting yourself in a position where opportunities can come at you,
- 6:14and that came me away in the form of new Australian label, EX Music,
- 6:17have you recently signed with. So firstly, congratulations, thanks so much.
- 6:23So what is something like that means to you as a band having having
- 6:26label representation and by someone as solid as Ex Music. Look, it's it's
- 6:32I'm really honored and just to have someone like really believe in me and hear
- 6:38the songs and you know, and to recognize how hard I've worked as well.
- 6:42I've been at this for the last fourteen years and I just I don't
- 6:45give up. So one that makes me feel good that a label can take
- 6:50me on and go, well, this girl just does not give up,
- 6:53like she's not gonna stop, you know. And and to just help with
- 6:57that bigger each because sometimes you just you can't do it on your own.
- 7:00When you get to that certain point, it's like you need help. And
- 7:03I definitely needed that help. And it's just you know, I'm so grateful
- 7:08and it's a huge opportunity and I can't thank Tim enough for taking me on
- 7:13board. And yeah, like I'm just going to keep the songs coming very
- 7:17good. Now. You also recently got a new bass player in the form
- 7:21of Mick. So introduce us to him and tell us what he brings to
- 7:25the band. Mick Jones, Now, he's a machine. I love Mick.
- 7:30I actually met Mick when I first moved to Melbourne, so I've known
- 7:33him for like fourteen fifteen years now, and he's just the best guy I
- 7:38know. And you know, I've watched him throughout the year's play in different
- 7:43bands, do session stuff, due touring absolutely everything, and because I am
- 7:47so you know, I go from genre to genre and kind of bring all
- 7:53kinds of elements into the songs. He was just gonna be the perfect you
- 7:58know, bass player for me to be able to go through that. And
- 8:01you know, if you're going to do all these cool things, like you
- 8:05want to do this stuff with your mates, and but at the same time,
- 8:09like it's a hard worker and he's dedicated and he just doesn't stop,
- 8:13you know. And yeah, since Mick jumped on board, like it's just
- 8:18brought a new a new energy, a new life to the songs. It's
- 8:22just yeah, it's it's I'm really excited to do this now with me Ken.
- 8:30We played our last show a couple of weeks ago, and yeah,
- 8:35that energy was just locked in and it was tight, and yeah, we
- 8:39just felt like we're ready, unstoppable. Yeah. Now, the other exciting
- 8:45news for the Carlie Jewel and your band is you're off to Japan again.
- 8:48Very shortly tell us about that. Yeah, So we leave on Monday and
- 8:56we're going over for our second tour now to do two weeks of shows.
- 9:01Last time we went for five days. We did five shows last time,
- 9:05and we kind of got to the last one and we were like, man,
- 9:09we just can we go back to the first place and do this all
- 9:11again. So we said to the tour manager, you free next year and
- 9:16he's like yeah, when I was like, I was like, it's good
- 9:18weather now, I was like, same time next year, I go,
- 9:22but I'll make it a week later so I can have my birthday in Japan.
- 9:28So yeah, we locked Nick in and hit Aaron back up at Paranormal
- 9:31Activities and said we want to come back next year, but we're going to
- 9:33do two weeks instead. So we absolutely fell in love with Japan and the
- 9:37response was just insane. I even went down to Tower Records to see if
- 9:41they had any of my albums left from last time and they'd sold out,
- 9:46which was just like huge the previous label I was with a couple of years
- 9:52ago when I did the album got us in there, So yeah, that
- 9:56was that was insane too. Just have that happen, you know, And
- 10:03and just the way, like the respect and the way these musicians work together,
- 10:09and the venues and you know, every night you play into a packed
- 10:13room and you don't even know these people. They're just they're proud and they
- 10:16want to be a part and just makes you want to be a better person.
- 10:18Man. I just I would live there in a heartbeat. Like it's
- 10:22just the most amazing place I've ever been. Yeah, second all of that,
- 10:28I've been there a couple of times. And yeah, so what about
- 10:33after that when you come back from Japan? What do you got planned?
- 10:37Just finishing up a couple of tracks and then I'll yeah, just be working.
- 10:45I might do a few acoustic things in between. I'm looking at doing
- 10:50and then I've got videos to make, so I've locked in folding as We've
- 10:56got four more videos to make as soon as I get back. So yeah,
- 11:00a lot of hard work videos, a few acoustic shows, and then
- 11:03October and back to recording with Stewart Doo. Yeah, just keep smashing out
- 11:09the tracks. Yeah. Well, in the meantime, Said Girl is premiering
- 11:13in Heavy this Friday, June and fourteenth. It'll be available on all the
- 11:16unusual streaming channels as well. And he's a crack up a song mate.
- 11:20So I look forward to hearing the rest of them. Oh, I can't
- 11:24wait. It's like just having these is like it's like, yeah, I'm
- 11:30so excited. I was just I've never had such huge songs like and you
- 11:35know, just I learned so much also working with Stuart that I'll like,
- 11:41Yeah, I just can't believe they're so big. Yeah, I didn't know
- 11:46what to do with them. I actually told Stut when I leave, I'll
- 11:48have to ring you because I don't think I know what to do with big
- 11:50songs like this. And then you know Tim, Tim had to listen and
- 11:56he'll help me out, won't get it wrong, and
