- 0:06Speaker 1: Rouge in the Zachary area. They've got a PGA Tour
- 0:10Speaker 1: driving range, a short game practice area, 30 to 40
- 0:14Speaker 1: yard practice shots. It's a great place to chip and
- 0:16Speaker 1: putt and practice if you don't have time for a
- 0:19Speaker 1: full round. Book your tee time today. Golf.breck.org. Golf.breck.org. Suck
- 0:26Speaker 1: has three receivers to his right. Travis Achan to his left. Now,
- 0:31Speaker 1: Olave in motion. Suck in trouble throwing toward the back
- 0:35Speaker 1: of the end zone, and that is going to be incomplete.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Trying to hit Bryce Lance. No flags. And that is
- 0:42Speaker 1: going to be the football game. Yeah, there's 134 left.
- 0:46Speaker 1: That's a really talented offense. You have a chance to
- 0:48Speaker 1: go win the football game. I really viewed it as
- 0:54Speaker 1: we're going for two there to win the game if
- 0:56Speaker 1: we have a chance. Saints lose in overtime to the
- 1:00Speaker 1: Lions 31-30. The loss stinks, especially when you were so close.
- 1:05Speaker 1: There was a lot to like coming out of that game.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I want to start with the two-point conversion, though. I
- 1:12Speaker 1: hope to never sit here on a Monday or any
- 1:16Speaker 1: day and do the hindsight 20-20 thing. When the Saints scored,
- 1:23Speaker 1: I immediately put on Twitter, I love the decision to
- 1:25Speaker 1: go for two regardless of the outcome. I never want
- 1:28Speaker 1: to see the result and then say, ah, you should
- 1:30Speaker 1: have kicked the PAT. I love, I mean love, the
- 1:36Speaker 1: decision to go for two regardless of the outcome. Y'all,
- 1:41Speaker 1: this is a team that has not been to the
- 1:43Speaker 1: postseason since COVID. You have sucked for a half a decade.
- 1:50Speaker 1: You have gone through, y'all, we lived through Andy Dalton.
- 1:57Speaker 1: They tried to convince you Derek Carr was a franchise quarterback.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Only when that dork ended his career leaping into a
- 2:05Speaker 1: sideline were they forced to draft a quarterback. And it
- 2:10Speaker 1: looks like they hit. And we're really excited about it.
- 2:14Speaker 1: And you have the opener on the road in a
- 2:17Speaker 1: game where you're a touchdown underdog. to a contender, a
- 2:20Speaker 1: team that two years ago was 15-2. Last year in
- 2:23Speaker 1: a quote-unquote down year, they were 9-8. You're on the
- 2:26Speaker 1: road in this game. You played like absolute garbage in
- 2:32Speaker 1: the first half. I mean, Tyler Shuck could not have
- 2:37Speaker 1: looked worse in the first half. He was flagged for grounding,
- 2:42Speaker 1: for throwing the ball to an offensive lineman. Looked like
- 2:45Speaker 1: he had never played football. He missed on a screen.
- 2:50Speaker 1: A screen pass an NFL quarterback should throw blindfolded, wide
- 2:55Speaker 1: of his running back. You come out of the half,
- 2:59Speaker 1: first play of the third quarter throws an inexcusable interception,
- 3:03Speaker 1: and then the next possession fumbles. You're down 21 to
- 3:07Speaker 1: nothing on the road against a really good team. And
- 3:11Speaker 1: something changed. I don't know what changed, but I'll be damned. Boom.
- 3:18Speaker 1: All of a sudden, switch flips, you rally from 21 down,
- 3:24Speaker 1: you have some incredible plays to force overtime, you give
- 3:31Speaker 1: up the touchdown, you go down, convert a fourth down, score,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and now you have a chance to win the game.
- 3:39Speaker 1: There's a minute 34 remaining in overtime. Like, you kick
- 3:43Speaker 1: the PAT there, you're not getting the ball back, so
- 3:45Speaker 1: the best you can do is tie. And I'll be
- 3:47Speaker 1: damned if I want to watch a crappy-ass Saints organization
- 3:50Speaker 1: go play for a tie. Go win the game. You
- 3:54Speaker 1: practice too. You got players. You practice two-point conversions. Call
- 4:00Speaker 1: your best damn two-point play. Call it, go run it.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Go win the game. You know what? It didn't work.
- 4:05Speaker 1: It is a minute 34. You kick the PAT, they're probably,
- 4:09Speaker 1: your defense is gassed. They just went right through you
- 4:11Speaker 1: like a hot knife through butter in overtime to score.
- 4:14Speaker 1: All they got to do is get a couple of
- 4:15Speaker 1: first downs. They're kicking the game-winning field goal. So yeah,
- 4:18Speaker 1: go win the game. Go win the game. I love
- 4:20Speaker 1: the call to go for it. 100%, 10 out of 10,
- 4:25Speaker 1: love the call to go for it. Now, we can
- 4:27Speaker 1: talk about the play call not being great. And sometimes
- 4:31Speaker 1: that's hat tip to the other guy. Saints lined up.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Detroit calls timeout. You showed them what you were looking
- 4:37Speaker 1: at or what they were looking at. They come to
- 4:39Speaker 1: the sideline. They discuss. And ultimately, low percentage pass in
- 4:44Speaker 1: the back of the end zone, and it's incomplete, and
- 4:45Speaker 1: you lose the game. Actually, I heard Flynn and Hester
- 4:47Speaker 1: this morning on Off the Bench talking about the play call,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and I thought it was a great job explaining what
- 4:53Speaker 1: they were trying to do, what the Saints were trying
- 4:54Speaker 1: to do, and why it didn't work and probably wasn't
- 4:57Speaker 1: the best thing to do. I mean, they're much better
- 4:59Speaker 1: at explaining that than I ever could. But it was
- 5:01Speaker 1: a great job through their prism explaining explain what they
- 5:04Speaker 1: wanted with a whip route or end up going to
- 5:07Speaker 1: the back of the end zone because the cornerback was
- 5:09Speaker 1: just going to be sitting there on a lave and
- 5:10Speaker 1: it became a low percentage pass to the back of
- 5:12Speaker 1: the end zone, but whatever. The bottom line is, let's
- 5:14Speaker 1: get a better play, but I love the decision to
- 5:16Speaker 1: go for it in that moment, go win the game. Now,
- 5:19Speaker 1: let's talk about a few other things from this game. Obviously,
- 5:25Speaker 1: the thing everybody's going to talk about is the defensive
- 5:27Speaker 1: touchdown in the first half that got wiped away. I'm
- 5:30Speaker 1: going to spend some more time on this later and
- 5:31Speaker 1: really dive into it. I don't think there's a conspiracy
- 5:35Speaker 1: against New Orleans. I just think it's an awful rule
- 5:38Speaker 1: that's inconsistently applied, as we have seen on social media
- 5:42Speaker 1: over the last 24 hours. Countless examples, I shouldn't say countless,
- 5:45Speaker 1: but plenty of examples of quarterbacks who were hit the
- 5:48Speaker 1: ball going backwards and it ruled a fumble in a
- 5:50Speaker 1: similar situation. One happened last year in the AFC championship game.
- 5:54Speaker 1: So you have a rule that is poorly worded and
- 5:57Speaker 1: inconsistently applied. And so when you're the Saints and you've
- 5:59Speaker 1: been NOLA no-called and you've had all the things throughout
- 6:01Speaker 1: the Saints history, Bounty Gate and everything, and you see
- 6:04Speaker 1: that happen, you think the league's out to get us,
- 6:05Speaker 1: they're screwing us. I don't think that necessarily. I'm not
- 6:09Speaker 1: a conspiracy theorist. I just think it's a crap rule
- 6:12Speaker 1: that is inconsistently applied and they stole seven points from
- 6:16Speaker 1: the New Orleans Saints. Even if you're trying to say
- 6:18Speaker 1: that was appropriately applied, applied based on the verbiage of
- 6:21Speaker 1: the rule. It's a hideous rule. There's no one that
- 6:24Speaker 1: looked at that. Like you're gaslighting us. There's no one
- 6:27Speaker 1: that looked at that and thought, yep, that's a forward pass.
- 6:30Speaker 1: That's an incomplete forward pass. Like you're trying to tell
- 6:33Speaker 1: me my eyes didn't see what I saw. So really
- 6:36Speaker 1: need to fix the rule. Brutal. I also don't think
- 6:39Speaker 1: that cost the Saints the game because you cannot assume
- 6:43Speaker 1: everything else is equal. You go, well, it's a high
- 6:44Speaker 1: ball game. They took a touchdown away. The Saints would
- 6:46Speaker 1: have won. How different is it if in that moment
- 6:49Speaker 1: it's 7-7? What sequence of events unfold? You don't know.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I'd also point out, like, you had plenty of opportunities. Hey,
- 6:55Speaker 1: Tyler Shuck, don't throw two awful interceptions. Tyler Shuck, don't
- 6:59Speaker 1: fumble and give them a short field. Chris Alave had
- 7:01Speaker 1: two drops on the same drive in the first quarter,
- 7:03Speaker 1: including one down the field that would have put the
- 7:05Speaker 1: Saints in position to get points. Quincy Riley, coverage bust
- 7:09Speaker 1: on the touchdown in the third quarter. Rahman Ross, St. Brown,
- 7:11Speaker 1: walked in. Don't coverage bust right there. You had a
- 7:14Speaker 1: 62-yard field goal. Not a high percentage kick. I get it.
- 7:16Speaker 1: But you had a 62-yard field goal to win the game.
- 7:19Speaker 1: You missed it. Point is, it's never about one play
- 7:22Speaker 1: over the course of 60 minutes, or in this case,
- 7:25Speaker 1: nearly 70 minutes of football. But that was atrocious. We'll
- 7:28Speaker 1: get to more of that later. Tyler Shuck. You got
- 7:31Speaker 1: to start better. If you're watching the game on Fox,
- 7:34Speaker 1: they put a graphic on the screen about how bad
- 7:35Speaker 1: the Saints were last year in the first quarter, and
- 7:37Speaker 1: that carried over. In the first half, Tyler Shuck was
- 7:39Speaker 1: 10 of 22 for 85 yards and a pick. 10
- 7:43Speaker 1: of 20. All the hype. I drank a gallon of
- 7:46Speaker 1: the Kool-Aid, y'all. I didn't just sip it. I drank
- 7:48Speaker 1: a full-on gallon of the Tyler Shuck Saints offense Kool-Aid.
- 7:52Speaker 1: You go get David Edwards. Your tackles are healthy. You
- 7:56Speaker 1: get Eric McCoy back. You spend the money on HN.
- 7:59Speaker 1: You draft three receivers. You pay to Lave. You bring
- 8:02Speaker 1: in Noah Fant. I was funneling the Kool-Aid at a
- 8:07Speaker 1: black and gold tailgate is what I was doing for
- 8:09Speaker 1: the offense this offseason. And you go to the first
- 8:11Speaker 1: half and watch the Saints get shut out and shuck
- 8:14Speaker 1: his 10-22 for 85 yards and a pick. I'm going,
- 8:16Speaker 1: what the hell? What did you all do this entire offseason?
- 8:19Speaker 1: What were we being served? And then you saw it.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And it was amazing to watch in the second half.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Even Chris Alave made a contested catch, the 42-yarder down
- 8:29Speaker 1: the middle on what ended up being the game-tying drive,
- 8:31Speaker 1: which I got to see more of that from Alave.
- 8:33Speaker 1: The two drops earlier on the first possession of the
- 8:35Speaker 1: second quarter are inexcusable for a guy that's making $ 31 million.
- 8:39Speaker 1: And you can look at the 10 catches for 182,
- 8:43Speaker 1: but the bottom line is you're going to have a
- 8:46Speaker 1: higher expectation. But Shuck fought back from down 21-0 on
- 8:51Speaker 1: the road against a contender to force overtime and then
- 8:54Speaker 1: got a touchdown in overtime when you had to have
- 8:56Speaker 1: it Yeah, it, whatever the it is that you got
- 8:59Speaker 1: to have, he has it. Does it mean he's going
- 9:01Speaker 1: to win a championship? I don't know that, but I'm
- 9:03Speaker 1: good rolling with him. I don't know how you could
- 9:05Speaker 1: look at that Sunday and not feel that. You got
- 9:07Speaker 1: to get better in the first quarter. You can't just go,
- 9:09Speaker 1: you can't, you can't go crap your pants in the
- 9:12Speaker 1: first half of a football game and have to keep
- 9:14Speaker 1: digging yourself out of 21, nothing holes. But you saw
- 9:17Speaker 1: the ability. You saw it there in that second half.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Now mentioned a lobby, a give him credit, man. The
- 9:23Speaker 1: 42 yard reception on the time drive was awesome. What
- 9:27Speaker 1: I will say is there's two drops on the same
- 9:30Speaker 1: possession in the second quarter. That can't happen. When you
- 9:33Speaker 1: make $ 31 million and you're sixth highest paid receiver in
- 9:35Speaker 1: the NFL, you're going to carry larger expectations. You've got
- 9:38Speaker 1: to make contested catches. Devon Vele, the 31-yarder down the
- 9:42Speaker 1: middle where he went full extension down the right hash,
- 9:44Speaker 1: full extension lay out in the fourth quarter. That's the
- 9:47Speaker 1: kind of play you expect Chris Alave to make all
- 9:49Speaker 1: the time. How about Bryce Lance on... fourth and 12
- 9:54Speaker 1: on the final drive where you're trying to go tie
- 9:56Speaker 1: the game and force overtime. It's fourth and 12. Sideline
- 9:59Speaker 1: route to Bryce Lance, contested 15-yard catch, boom, move the sticks.
- 10:05Speaker 1: That's the kind of play you expect a lave to
- 10:07Speaker 1: make all the time. You want to look at 10
- 10:09Speaker 1: for 82, fine. But he also had 13 targets. The
- 10:13Speaker 1: next closest was Vele and Aitchen both had nine. A
- 10:17Speaker 1: receiver and a running back. Next was Noah Fant, a
- 10:20Speaker 1: tight end with eight. Juwan Johnson, tight end, seven. Lance
- 10:23Speaker 1: was the next closest receiver with four targets. And then
- 10:28Speaker 1: Donaldson had two. Point is, I expect, like Chris Alave
- 10:32Speaker 1: is going to get, same thing as last year. He's
- 10:34Speaker 1: going to get numbers because he's going to get a
- 10:36Speaker 1: bunch of targets. Can you make impactful catches? That's what
- 10:40Speaker 1: we need to see. I love the 42-yarder down the
- 10:42Speaker 1: middle late in the game. I loved on fourth and three,
- 10:44Speaker 1: they went to him in overtime for 20 yards. Yes,
- 10:46Speaker 1: give me more of that. Prove me wrong, Chris Alave.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Please prove me wrong. I thought the defense was really good.
- 10:53Speaker 1: It's hard to say when you look up and they
- 10:54Speaker 1: gave up 31 points, but that's 31 points in overtime
- 10:58Speaker 1: on the road against a good team. You gave up
- 11:01Speaker 1: two sustained drives. You gave up two sustained drives. All game,
- 11:05Speaker 1: you gave up two sustained drives. You gave up the
- 11:08Speaker 1: 13-play drive in the first quarter, their second possession, 13 plays,
- 11:12Speaker 1: 89 yards, 625 off the clock. You didn't give up
- 11:15Speaker 1: another sustained drive until the touchdown drive in overtime, 10 plays,
- 11:19Speaker 1: 70 yards. There are other scoring drives, three plays, 25 yards,
- 11:23Speaker 1: seven plays, 41 yards. These are coming off turnovers. Yeah,
- 11:26Speaker 1: I mean, it's just you– And then the field goal
- 11:30Speaker 1: they kicked in the fourth quarter was an eight-play 45-yard drive,
- 11:33Speaker 1: if you want to count that. But the bottom line
- 11:34Speaker 1: is they only put together two long, sustained drives against
- 11:38Speaker 1: your defense, which I think was really good to see.
- 11:41Speaker 1: The offense gave Detroit short fields, which led to two
- 11:45Speaker 1: touchdowns early in the third quarter. The defense scored with
- 11:48Speaker 1: an asterisk, and Vernon Broughton, how about Vernon Broughton with
- 11:51Speaker 1: the forced fumble? Beautiful job by a defensive lineman. Punch out,
- 11:54Speaker 1: which caused the ball to loosen up from Jameer Gibbs,
- 11:57Speaker 1: and then he kind of got his bicep in there
- 11:59Speaker 1: and scooped it away. So forced fumble and fumble recovery,
- 12:02Speaker 1: there's a lot that I liked from this ballgame. It
- 12:04Speaker 1: sucks to lose, especially when you're so close. but you
- 12:08Speaker 1: are building. So you're building and there's going to be a...
- 12:12Speaker 1: I'm not talking about moral victories. What I'm talking about
- 12:14Speaker 1: is are you seeing progress from a team? an organization,
- 12:19Speaker 1: a franchise that is building itself out of a half-decade
- 12:22Speaker 1: lull where you were convinced Andy Dalton and Derek Carr
- 12:26Speaker 1: were the ones that were going to take you where
- 12:27Speaker 1: you wanted to go. And it's impossible to look at
- 12:30Speaker 1: what you saw, especially in the second half Sunday, and
- 12:32Speaker 1: say anything other than they are showing progress. Progress in
- 12:36Speaker 1: signs that, yes, wins are going to come. I don't
- 12:38Speaker 1: think it's going to come this week in Baltimore. Saints
- 12:40Speaker 1: are 8.5-point dog against the Ravens. The Ravens just went
- 12:42Speaker 1: on their own boat race to the Indianapolis Colts this
- 12:45Speaker 1: past Sunday. But There's going to be opportunities against the
- 12:51Speaker 1: second weakest strength of schedule in the NFL. There's going
- 12:54Speaker 1: to be opportunities to win games. And on a day
- 12:56Speaker 1: where the entire NFC South lost, everybody in the NFC,
- 12:59Speaker 1: Carolina gave up 59 at home. Tampa went on the
- 13:03Speaker 1: road and gave up 33 against Joey B and the
- 13:05Speaker 1: Super Bowl champion Bengals, the coming Super Bowl champion Bengals.
- 13:09Speaker 1: I mean, the Atlanta Falcons look like poo-poo. I mean,
- 13:13Speaker 1: God bless our guy Coop went out there and tried
- 13:15Speaker 1: his best with a with an injury, but if it's
- 13:18Speaker 1: not him, it's two. I mean, what are they? They
- 13:20Speaker 1: lost on the road to 100-year-old Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh.
- 13:23Speaker 1: They scored 13 points. You can tell me that this
- 13:26Speaker 1: Saints team can't get to 9-10 wins and win a
- 13:29Speaker 1: bad division? That's been the hope all along. What you
- 13:32Speaker 1: saw in the second half, what you saw from the
- 13:33Speaker 1: defense says, yeah, it's in there. Let's see if they
- 13:36Speaker 1: can go do it. So disappoint. Listen, I'm not sitting
- 13:38Speaker 1: here trying to tell you, you know, pat him on
- 13:40Speaker 1: the back and notch one in the moral victory column.
- 13:43Speaker 1: What I'm saying is it's impossible to watch that and
- 13:46Speaker 1: not be encouraged that this is a team that can compete,
- 13:50Speaker 1: that have separated themselves from the gum on the bottom
- 13:55Speaker 1: of the shoe in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns, and the, well,
- 13:59Speaker 1: the Jets won yesterday, but the Titans, the Dolphins who
- 14:01Speaker 1: lost to the Raiders. Like, you have elevated yourself from
- 14:05Speaker 1: that lower tier, and you showed you can compete with
- 14:08Speaker 1: a team in the upper tier. You're not ready to
- 14:10Speaker 1: maybe necessarily win those games. You didn't compete for four quarters,
- 14:12Speaker 1: but you're closer to that than you were at the bottom,
- 14:15Speaker 1: and that's encouraging. See if the Saints can go give
- 14:18Speaker 1: a good effort this weekend in Baltimore against the Ravens.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Maybe steal one on the road.
