- Lucas: Hmm... it's episode 109, and I was just thinking about what we haven't covered yet. Luna: Oh yeah? What did you land on? Lucas: Coconuts. We've done fruits like mangoes, but not coconut. And it's such a staple here — you see them everywhere. Luna: True. At the market, they're often piled up. But how do you actually buy one? I'd probably just point. Lucas: Right, but it's more fun to use the words. So today we're learning how to buy coconut. The word for coconut is kelapa. Luna: Kelapa. Got it. Lucas: First phrase: Saya mahu kelapa. Mean? 'I want coconut.' Simple. Luna: Saya mahu kelapa. So if I'm at a stall, I'd say that. Lucas: Exactly. Then the seller might ask you how many. So you need to say 'one fruit' or 'one piece'. The word for piece is biji, but we use it for fruits. So 'one coconut' is sebiji kelapa. Luna: Sebiji kelapa. But I'd probably want two. Lucas: Then you say: Saya mahu dua biji. 'I want two pieces.' But you don't repeat kelapa if it's clear. Luna: Saya mahu dua biji. And I'd point at the coconuts. Lucas: Yes. Now, how do you ask the price? We've done 'Berapa harga'. But for individual items, you say 'Berapa harga sebiji?' — 'How much for one piece?' Luna: Berapa harga sebiji? That rolls off the tongue. Lucas: It does. Now, something specific to coconuts: you might want to know if it's old or young. For drinking, you want young coconut; for cooking, old. 'Old' is tua. So you can ask: Kelapa ini tua? 'Is this coconut old?' Luna: Kelapa ini tua? And if the seller says yes, it's for cooking? Lucas: Right. And if you want them to cut it for you, you can ask: Boleh potong? 'Can you cut?' Luna: Boleh potong. That's super practical. Lucas: Let's say all five together: Saya mahu kelapa. Berapa harga sebiji? Kelapa ini tua? Saya mahu dua biji. Boleh potong? Luna: Saya mahu kelapa. Berapa harga sebiji? Kelapa ini tua? Saya mahu dua biji. Boleh potong? I like them. Lucas: Now, if Fexingo has been helping you make progress with these market trips, there's a way to support the show. It's buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That kind of support is what keeps us free and ad-free. Luna: Yeah, totally. And it really helps us keep making episodes like this. So if you can, we appreciate it. Lucas: Alright, back to coconuts. Let's try a mini scene. Luna, you're at the stall. Luna: Saya mahu kelapa. Berapa harga sebiji? Lucas: Seller says 'Dua ringgit sebiji'. So two ringgit each. Luna: OK. Kelapa ini tua? Lucas: Seller says 'Ya, tua'. So old. Then you want two. Luna: Saya mahu dua biji. Boleh potong? Lucas: Seller says 'Boleh'. And you're done. Perfect. Luna: That felt real. I could actually use that. Lucas: And remember, you can mix and match. If you want a young coconut for drinking, you'd say 'Kelapa ini muda?' — muda means young. Luna: Kelapa ini muda? That's good to know too. Lucas: Let's quickly review the core phrases one more time. Saya mahu kelapa. Luna: Saya mahu kelapa. Lucas: Berapa harga sebiji? Luna: Berapa harga sebiji? Lucas: Kelapa ini tua? Luna: Kelapa ini tua? Lucas: Saya mahu dua biji. Luna: Saya mahu dua biji. Lucas: Boleh potong? Luna: Boleh potong? Lucas: Excellent. Practice those, and next time you see a coconut stall, you'll be ready. Luna: I'm definitely going to try it. Thanks, Lucas! Lucas: You're welcome. Keep practicing, and see you next time. Luna: Bye!
