- 0:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, okay, let's do it.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see how you're wrapping the upper pencil a bit.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_02]: We'll talk about the UP about that.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about the Michigan trip here in a little bit.

- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'm doing great, my friend.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: It is nice to get a little busier, obviously big news with Josie retiring, football just around the corner, us podcasting again.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: That means that things are heating up, so I'm excited to be here.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we are back.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: We'll be Wednesday's per usual, one at Dendham.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: Next Thursday, we're actually going to go Thursday, because Oklahoma will be at SEC Media Days.

- 1:23[SPEAKER_01]: Otherwise though, let's waste no time gentlemen.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: I was thinking late Ryan as we look at the calendar on Sunday.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, okay, we got two or three little things to do.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_01]: E's our way into SEC Media Days next week.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see if anyone tries to make it into a big, twelve media day.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_01]: And then at about nine, thirty Monday,
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: Pete Daml strikes the anti news dump.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: By the way, thank you everyone for not doing that on Fourth of July Friday.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: That would have sucked.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: Um, Pete Dale makes the announcement.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: Joe Kassiglion is retiring the long time.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to directly release vocal home.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: Not an immediate thing.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be a little bit of a process here.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: He'll finish out this academic year.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: Let Oklahoma get on to the hiring process.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: Then he'll hang on for a couple of years as AD emeritus.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: We found out yesterday on Tuesday.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: That'll be a lot of spearheading fundraising projects.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_01]: Things like that.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: Before we get to anything else, we were at the press conference yesterday, all that fun stuff.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: Who will it?
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it was your first reaction when the news came down.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, oh, well, we are working today.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: Monday is a working day.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_02]: So I was scrolling on my phone.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_02]: I was preparing for a radio hit.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_02]: in Norman with Dari Noka and I was going over the standings of last year's SEC football, you know, standings and how everybody finished and how many starters were coming back and which teams were going to be the real players this year and the wind total projections were nine and a half oh my gosh, there's nobody going to win ten in the SEC this year and ding
- 2:54[SPEAKER_02]: Pete Damel showed up in my timeline.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, okay, and everyone put all that stuff aside.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Darry, you're not gonna talk about when totals are last year's standings.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_02]: Pretty sure we're gonna talk about Jocie.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_02]: It was, okay, there's two ways to look at this, and it's like parenthetically trying to fit him inside both.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_02]: It was a shocker.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_02]: Like it was like holy crap.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_02]: Joces, Joces, they're going to retire.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_02]: And at the same time, I think a lot of us in this industry have been kind of waiting for a piece of news like this.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_02]: If you get my drift, like he's sixty-seven now, at what point is Joe gonna retire?
- 3:32[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we start asking that question.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_02]: The game is coming at him, you know, super fast, right?
- 3:37[SPEAKER_02]: And I L, revenue share, house settlement, you know, all this stuff is coming, changing the game.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_02]: And he mentioned this yesterday.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was very poignant.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_02]: The the college sports, which we've spent the lifetime building up in this model has gone this way now, basically, it's like, you know, we've seen all these coaches retire, you know, next Saben J, right?
- 3:59[SPEAKER_02]: We've seen at the top of their game, right?
- 4:02[SPEAKER_02]: And a lot of it is
- 4:05[SPEAKER_02]: You know, agents showing up on recruiting visits, right?
- 4:10[SPEAKER_02]: And I L demands that have nothing to do with playing time or college majors or, you know, the traditional stuff that we think about, you know, hey, what about the facilities?
- 4:24[SPEAKER_02]: There's a million things that kids have thought about recruiting wise over the past hundred years as in the NCAA, right?
- 4:32[SPEAKER_02]: Now all we hear about is, and I owe this, how much money are you going to give me that?
- 4:36[SPEAKER_02]: I got to take care of my family.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, I wonder if a sixty-seven-year-old athletic director who probably is really tired of
- 4:45[SPEAKER_02]: going down this road, like a lot of these coaches have shown us.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_02]: I wonder if he's going to retire at some point soon.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_02]: And I've been thinking that for probably a year, a year and a half.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_02]: So in one sense, it surprised the heck out of me and another sense it's like, makes sense.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's definitely just very interesting.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Joker Stickle Hill, and that's a big name, even from someone that's not from Oklahoma.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: I've not been covering this scene for a very long.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of people know Joker Stickle Hill.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's been doing this since nineteen ninety eight, entire twenty-first century OU has been overseen by Joker Stickle Hill.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: So it's going to be a lot different, but on one hand,
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: He is, he talked about yesterday in this promise conference about how he became a sooner and never wanted to leave.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: Joe Harris, the president of OU talked about how many other schools during his twenty-six years though you tried to pry him away and you just wouldn't budge you wanted to be a sooner.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: With how much love he asked for the school, he wouldn't leave if this athletic program as a whole was it in a good place.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: He must feel very good about the trajectory for each program in this changing landscape that who've kind of touched on within I.L.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: portal new facilities.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: He must think that this program is going in the right direction or else this would not be the time to leave.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: So you've got to think that he's very positive about the outlook.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Carson, I were there yesterday.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: We saw jokes of the own speak.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma president Joe Harris, the chair of the board.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: Regents, the hallway, and it was kind of struck me.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's Carson, I walk in and it's not just a press conference.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: There were other admin, friends, and family of jokes, signal your own past coaches.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: And you walk in, you see Sherry Cole and Bob Stoops and
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: See, in Stoops, which, by the way, Carson did track down Bob Stoops.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: Be sure you had the website, OklahomaSoonersonSide.com.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: His interview with Bob Stoops and everything Bob had to say about Joe's retirement is up there.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: Be sure you read that.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's a really good story.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: Great job by Carson.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: But in your writing, I found it's like, this feels like the Stoops retirement in kind of a way that
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: You had known for years and years and years, Bob would tell anyone who would listen.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, I'm not going to die in that chair, right?
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to do the, I'm eighty five years old.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: I'm doing the, the Bobby Balm, Joe Pop battle of who can just hang on long enough to have as many wins all that stuff.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: We knew that Bob was like, yeah, I'm going to get this to a point where I feel pretty accomplished, pretty fulfilled.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then I'm going to hand the keys off and you wondered where those times come at the end of twenty fourteen is on the story of Joe and Debo being like that.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: one more time run this thing back he gets that shifted right gets Lincoln Riley gets the program bounced back in the right direction and then when he felt like it was in a good spot he turned off the keys pulled him out tossing Lincoln and said peace I'll be right if you need me but for the most part I'd like to go play some golf shut up pretty trant them.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_01]: It felt like Joe could singly own
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: In a very, very similar spot, like you look at the last five years, every athletic department was scratching heads going, how are we going to make it through the pandemic when we can't have our biggest driver of revenue outside of just our TV deal, which is filling our football stadium, filling our basketball arena, it's all that stuff.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: He got to come up through that.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: Then suddenly right out of COVID, I whove and I remember the NCAA court case, it was basically like, well,
- 8:07[SPEAKER_01]: We lost on the NIL stuff.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: So instead of actually having a plan, we're just going to open this up and July first, twenty twenty one boom, NIL's the thing.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_01]: And suddenly Spencer Rattler has had a big signing in Chicago, stuff like that.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_01]: Jokes, they've got Oakland to the SEC.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: He locked down one of the two biggest TV contract, revenue distribution things that you can have in college athletics that are the big tin, something Joe Harris talked about.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_01]: And he oversaw this transition through him.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: Basically, it feels like he's set up football, men's basketball, your two programs.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: New O.C.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: going out and getting the material stuff for Porter Moser coming off his first NCAA tournament appearance.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: He sets up the biggest work chest, all that stuff in IL that Porter could have.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever the new AD comes in, it's going to be, okay, if football is bad, that's the decision that you have to make.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: If it's good, you got that check mark, Porter makes the discernment again, check mark, you're good, you can get off and rolling.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like who this was the Stoops version of.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: I have led everyone through the treacherous waters over the last five years and now the house settlement, what that becomes, it's ever evolving, are you going to be employees, you're not going to be employees and student athletes,
- 9:16[SPEAKER_01]: That is the big problem, but that's a problem.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: Every AD is going to have to tackle, and that's a problem that I feel come to a handing off to some new blood to come in and be the next new voice, the new faceline will come before.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so you heard Joe Harris yesterday, and Joe Costiglale made reference to it as well.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: The next athletic director needs to be able to see the future, basically, right?
- 9:38[SPEAKER_02]: That's not necessarily predict what's going to happen, you know, an oustridomus or anything.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_02]: But you've got to anticipate these sea changes that are coming down the pike.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_02]: And everybody applauded, Joe C has applauded, Joe C for that for his kind of foresight, you know,
- 9:55[SPEAKER_02]: is interesting that Harris said six years ago when I got the job six years ago.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_02]: Because when word leaked that Oklahoma was going to the SEC was five four years ago, two thousand twenty one right so.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_02]: makes you wonder how long Joe's been thinking about this, apparently longer than just that Nebraska game that got moved.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_02]: They just wanted to play Nebraska tonight.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_02]: Apparently it's been brewing a little bit longer than that.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_02]: But he's always had this ability to kind of anticipate
- 10:28[SPEAKER_02]: What's coming down the pike, right?
- 10:30[SPEAKER_02]: What kind of changes are coming for college athletics?
- 10:33[SPEAKER_02]: What kind of changes are coming for the big twelve?
- 10:35[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he had the big twelve.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_02]: He was one of the hand-delossed odds.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_02]: We're two of the athletic directors who had Oklahoma and Texas poised to jump to the back twelve.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_02]: years ago back in two thousand eleven two thousand twelve so he's been kind of on that cutting edge of what's coming what's going to happen what might happen something that we need to prepare for in case it does happen having said that that leads me to this point he's pretty smart he looks at the schedule he knows the SEC is really good he looks at the Oklahoma schedule he sees maybe the hardest schedule in the country
- 11:16[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, use kind of a trendy pick to make the playoff.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, use kind of a trendy pick to even win, challenged to win ten games, that kind of thing.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_02]: What if reality happens again, and they go five and seven against that schedule?
- 11:28[SPEAKER_02]: Does Josie want to be in that chair to have to hit the eject button on Brent Venables?
- 11:36[SPEAKER_02]: He absolutely does not want to have to be the one that fires Brent Venables.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_02]: Brent's far enough to understand, hey, that's outside of your hands, but it would be
- 11:44[SPEAKER_02]: It would be tough, personally, for jokes, to be the one on record, yeah, had to fire breven levels, and then I took, you know, went into retirement.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_02]: That would suck for him.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_02]: The other thing is, if we're talking about, you know, we've mentioned right before the podcast, which sports at OU are getting revenue share, and which ones have to fall back strictly on NL.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_02]: What if those non-revenue sports?
- 12:07[SPEAKER_02]: Like soccer, wrestling, you know, the ones that struggle to make, the ones that struggle to win, the ones that struggle, volleyball would be one, I guess they've gotten a little better.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_02]: But the ones that struggle to make any money that just kind of a scholarship terrain, that kind of thing, Joe doesn't want to have to be the one that has to cut sports, have to reduce
- 12:32[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, you sports roster, right?
- 12:33[SPEAKER_02]: Like we don't offer, you know, women soccer anymore.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_02]: We don't offer volleyball anymore.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_02]: We had to cut wrestling because there's, you know, too many scholarships, too much expenditures.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to say money for the money that we're putting on football players.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't want to have to be the guy on record that, you know, as, as that's coming for a lot of schools that might not be coming for you.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_02]: but it might.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_02]: It might be something that's coming down the pike that he would anticipate and said, you know what?
- 12:59[SPEAKER_02]: I don't want my name attached to the to be the guy that said we have to cut these other sports.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_02]: So there might be some of that at play, too, in terms of his timing.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's something, too, Carson, that it was asked or jokes like, how has your job changed over the last five years?
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think it
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: It'll be a conversation we'll get into and we'll talk about Randall's.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: He uses it in here in a second.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_01]: But the job of an athletic director, specifically at a school at Oklahoma that has adopted a pro model quote, quote, quote, for Jim Nagy is the football gym and stuff like that.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: Like the AT is a different job, fundamentally today than it was three years ago, than it was five years ago, certainly than it was, what, twenty eight years ago, and when jokes are glion arrived on the front steps of Evan's home.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, to be a successful athletic director in this day and age, I feel like you have to be very malleable.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we've talked about this multiple times already on this podcast, how much college sports are changing.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_00]: What changes, though, you might see whether for better or worse in the next few years.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, you look at the move to the SEC, some updates to facilities, obviously the construction of Lowes Field.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: Joke is strictly owned in a very good job adapting to whatever challenges arose.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: whatever changed within the complex of college sports.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: And it kind of makes you wonder how much of a role obviously Randall Stevenson's going to have the role in leading the search.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: But I wonder if Joe Castiglio has any say if he has any recommendations about who would be similarly malleable, who would be similarly just creative and find new ways to help you win.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: Because you look at a lot of
- 14:42[SPEAKER_00]: college sports these days.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of a bidding war.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: You're seeing that a lot with Texas tech, getting Nigeria, Canada and softball, two million dollars, getting a five star.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think the number a talk to him play here in the twenty twenty seven class.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, schools like that just have money or again, for example, Phil Knight money.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_00]: People are going to outbitto you and OU has to find ways to be smarter and work around some disadvantages they might have.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_00]: And that's a big thing that I feel like mistakenly almost done a pretty good job of adjusting to the replacement needs to do the same thing.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, thank you very much.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_02]: I'm really quick.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_02]: I want to interject this.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_02]: He talked about Texas Tech.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_02]: Our man Ross DeLinger tweeted out a few minutes ago that Texas Tech billionaire booster Cody Campbell is making the rounds here at Big Twelve Media Days.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he's not just on social media, he's not just, you know, throwing cash out the window like a despondent Jesse Pinkman.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_02]: He's actually going to big, twelve media days and representing Texas tech in some way for a former fashion.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_02]: I don't remember Boon Pickins doing that.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_02]: Boon Pickins saved it for the kickoff of the first game of the year, and then we never heard from Boon again until after the season.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_02]: It's interesting.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_02]: The way things are changing and so fast and so drastically too.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Boon had done that.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_01]: You can imagine, we could have got a couple of words between Boon and Mike Gandhi at Big Tell Media Daily and had a little spice to our life instead.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_02]: I don't mean that one time he told me specifically said, I don't really put any thought into what Booster said.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm like, the guy whose name's on the stadium, huh?
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: The only reason that less miles than you were able to get this thing going, what do you mean?
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: Don't worry about him.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's, it's just, it's actually, and that's why like, I asked Joe Ciglione, when you look into your crystal ball, what's the next frontier?
- 16:30[SPEAKER_01]: Because we can chronically, we just did everything that ADs have had to do the last five or six years.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was interesting.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: He talked a lot about how do we, and whatever this new model becomes, and that's when he was talking about what you referenced earlier, who, whether it's an employee model, whether it's
- 16:46[SPEAKER_01]: still somehow this, they're not employees of the school, but there's still athletes at the school.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: You talked about how do you blend the, basically what he's saying is, how do you build a connection between one to come play sports at Oklahoma, getting paid what you're worth, and not just being mercenaries that the fans can't talk to.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_01]: That's summarizing and in probably paraphrasing, and that's not exactly what jokes the wheel and meant.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_01]: I apologize.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's how I took his answer, but
- 17:12[SPEAKER_01]: I find that to be very, very interesting and it's interesting as well that as you mentioned, Carson Joe will be an advisor, but not the one recommending the one that is spearheading the new search that Joseph Harris, oh, you presence talked about they're looking for Joe to point out, but it's going to be
- 17:29[SPEAKER_01]: Randall Stevenson that is spearheading this all announced the committee here over the coming days or weeks is as Joe Harris talked about but who've it opens up a realm of possibilities you talk about outside the box higher when you when you pair what Joseph Harris said yesterday about what they're looking for plus the fact that Randall Stevenson comes in what couldn't outside the box higher look like for Oklahoma what comes to their new idea
- 17:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, when you put somebody like Randall Stevenson in charge who comes from AT&T, he's on the board of directors currently at Walmart.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he's making top level decisions for the largest corporation in the world.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_02]: Walmart, unless I'm, you know, forgetting Amazon or whatever.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_02]: But he comes from a business background.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_02]: He's got a accounting bachelor's degree in a master's degree from OU in accounting.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_02]: He is,
- 18:19[SPEAKER_02]: by the numbers, right?
- 18:21[SPEAKER_02]: He's passionate, oh, you fan, don't get me wrong, but he is by the numbers.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_02]: He is black and white.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_02]: I got about a hundred questions yesterday, which athletic director do you think, oh, you will hire or will poach?
- 18:38[SPEAKER_02]: Is it, is it, you know, Kirby Hoka?
- 18:40[SPEAKER_02]: His former Joe C's former guy at OU is now Texas Tech, obviously doing some special things at Texas Tech.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_02]: I wouldn't think so, not the way that Cody Campbell is running things down in Lubbock.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, maybe.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_02]: We talked about Zack Selman, you know, after record and behind the scenes, we've talked about Zack Selman coming back to OU.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, a Selman?
- 19:06[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, first of all, OU DNA at the absolute, you know, most boiled down undilluted
- 19:14[SPEAKER_02]: pure OUDNA of anybody, it's a salmon, right?
- 19:18[SPEAKER_02]: But if you know Lucius and Doeie, and if you knew Lee Roy, you'd know that the salmon goes being the salmon name goes way beyond football, talking about some quality, quality human beings.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_02]: He would be perfect for the job, perfect.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_02]: Ren Baker is from Oklahoma has done a bang-up job.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_02]: He's got some Oklahoma state ties, but he's done a bang-up job at, you know, North Texas and now at West Virginia and, you know, guys like that would, I'm sure be interested, but the question is this.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_02]: Is Randall Stevenson does he want a college athletic director, right?
- 19:55[SPEAKER_02]: To come in from another college and run things in a college athletic director sense or does he want a CEO?
- 20:02[SPEAKER_02]: Does he want a big business corporate minded?
- 20:05[SPEAKER_02]: Somebody who knows, you know, media negotiations, someone who knows contract negotiations.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_02]: Someone who can line up some, you know, big money sponsors, think about that.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_02]: Get AT&T and hear sponsor the sooner, so you kidding me?
- 20:20[SPEAKER_02]: Something like that.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_02]: Just saying something like that.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_02]: We might have seen the last of the collegiate athletic director model at OU if Randall Stephenson.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_02]: higher things, you know, kind of the way he wants, if it shakes out that way.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_02]: And then if it's successful, I see a lot of people jumping on board and doing that with their future athletic directors too.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_02]: Not saying not predicting it's going to happen.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just saying, go in the college, the traditional AD college route might not be what OU does.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_02]: OU might go into the corporate sector and go find them, you know, kind of a business CEO, which would be totally weird.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: AT&T for the record, they took the red river shootout away from us and made it the showdown when they took it over as a sponsor.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_01]: And for that, while Raid will see us doing a lot for the university, that should never be forgotten.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, Dr. Pepper, red river shootout.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, I guess one of the big questions that I don't even know if we can answer is
- 21:18[SPEAKER_01]: When you look at a modern AD, what is the role?
- 21:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like what is that going to look like for a sport like baseball or softball that don't have a softball general manager or a baseball general manager?
- 21:31[SPEAKER_01]: Is it a more traditional AD head coach relationship, but you talk about
- 21:36[SPEAKER_01]: The pro model for OU's front office for football, which was referenced a couple of times yesterday by President Harris, talking about Jim Nagy, a pro setup.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_01]: Well, if we take that and really peel it out and take the step back and say, okay, let's extend the pro model out.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_01]: Is the instructor more what an NFL franchise would have as your president of the business side of things that, hey, the GM makes the football stuff?
- 22:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I guess they're
- 22:04[SPEAKER_01]: part owner because the owner also has sand if the head coach stays goes the GM stays goes, but also is that what the University president's going to be and then the AD is just the business side is a weird hybrid role.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_01]: I don't really know how to place the athletic director in the new organization flow chart for a football program.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: If people continue to adopt the model at Oklahoma
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's a great question, Ryan, and one that I don't know the exact answer to.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's hard to imagine what that's going to look like, the difference between a sport, say, baseball, softball versus having a general manager in football.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like football, every team, all, one hundred, thirty, six, whatever it is now FBS teams are kind of taking advantage of this NIO foundation they can get in this new day of college athletics.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_00]: Baseball softball is not a revenue sport at every school.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, I think there's more of an area in a tree to more like that athletic director, Coach relationship that you kind of touched on a minute ago.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_00]: So it's hard to exactly know.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, maybe maybe we get to a point in college sports where there is a baseball general manager.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_00]: There is a softball general manager.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_00]: I don't see that any time soon for OU, especially with two coaches, Patty Gasso and Skip Johnson that have done this for a while, or both very successful at OU.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying it couldn't happen, because it definitely could, and I have no idea what direction Stevenson's going to go with this search.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_00]: But it is something to consider.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's also interesting.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_01]: So we say outside the box, which I think a lot of people's minds start to business world.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: And it's something that is, is college athletic directors going to reflect what conference commissioner has been for a little while because you have some guys like Bob Bullsby.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: He was from the, I worked my way through the college A.D.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: side of things and then moved into a conference role.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: But then
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: Let's start to happen about twenty ten.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the biggest thing for a conference was how big of a TV deal can you get, which is why you've gotten different athletic directors Brett your mark or a conference commissioner, excuse me, Brett your mark comes from the business world.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_01]: Patatee at the big ten to replace Kevin Warren comes from the CBS the business.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_01]: Larry.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we're going to throw commissioner Larry.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_01]: Larry Scott from WTA.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_02]: Kevin said it's of all things.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so that that was a shift there.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_01]: So that when I think outside the box to go that way, but then I circle it back around to this who the OU football GM set up isn't outside the box thing as far as let's just model it after the pros, but if you were to say John you have a pro style GM
- 24:44[SPEAKER_01]: is Jim naggy and outside the box hire is that a very good predictable hire guy that was interviewing for the New York Jets GM job didn't get that.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're saying I want to build a pro front office, let's go get a pro personnel guy.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_01]: That to me is a good hire.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't label that as outside the box.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_01]: The idea to set it up that way.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_01]: So maybe we come back around and say, hey, it's just an A.D that has A.D experience as well as marketing experience.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: Sounds like jokes secretly own from his prior years, right?
- 25:14[SPEAKER_01]: Because that may be that's the outside of the box part of it is just knowing, hey, I need to focus on the business side of it, even though you get to an end that's well within the college AD world.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the question is does the new person have does he come from a campus or does he come from a, you know, board room?
- 25:32[SPEAKER_02]: Those are the two, for me, those are the two choices, for which way do you want to go, which way do you want to take OU athletics in the future?
- 25:40[SPEAKER_02]: And the way we're looking at money nowadays, changing hands in college sports, which is so foreign to, you know, the older I get, the further away, the amateur model seems, right?
- 25:55[SPEAKER_02]: It seems like that's college sports now is,
- 26:01[SPEAKER_02]: You know, just corporate banking finance.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, private equity is in the discussion now.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_02]: Where that's where the game's going.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_02]: That's where the sports going.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_02]: So point being Randall Stephenson comes from that world.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_02]: would not be surprised if your next athletic director at the University of Oklahoma is someone who has almost zero campus experience being around student athletes being around athletes and even think about that might come from a corporation that doesn't even do you might be the current CEO at liquid drain over something you know I don't know
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to touch to the fifth.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome in.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: Saudi Arabia, welcome.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_01]: You've infiltrated the Premier League.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to college at that.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_01]: That would be insane.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_01]: You bring a live guy.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_01]: Let me go.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_02]: Think of the sponsorships.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_02]: They owe you golf team would get being not being tied to live golf, right?
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: big time.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: Let me toss this and you just real quick.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: And then let's go program by program.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_01]: This was a question asked to me.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: So I can't claim ownership.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_01]: It was actually my pal Tyler Neil who I work with the franchise.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_01]: He asked me this yesterday and it took me a second to go.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_01]: Not ever crossed my mind, but wouldn't that be a fascinating place.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_01]: This this thing goes he asked.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_01]: Is there a non zero chance no matter how small that Randall Stevenson Dick Cheney's this thing and he's on the search committee for George Bush's vice president and by the end of the committee he says your best option is me I should be the vice president is there any chance of the world that Randall Stevenson to this point who is refused to accept compensation for Oklahoma goes shoot man.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm already helping reorganize the athletic department.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm already helping this
- 27:45[SPEAKER_01]: Why should I hire someone?
- 27:46[SPEAKER_01]: I can just do it for a couple of years and leave through this thing.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_02]: Zero percent chance.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_02]: No, not a zero percent chance.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_02]: He's sixty five.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_02]: He's been through the corporate ringer.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_02]: He's retired from AT&T five years ago.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_02]: He distance himself from the PGA tour after they partnered up with in a small measure with live golf.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_02]: He said, I don't want anything to do with that.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_02]: He backed out of that.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_02]: So I get the feeling that he doesn't really want to
- 28:13[SPEAKER_02]: He wouldn't mind carrying that plate around if as long as it didn't have too much on it.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?
- 28:18[SPEAKER_02]: The athletic director of Oklahoma is gonna have a ton on his plate.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_02]: So I would say probably no to that.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_01]: That was my knee injury reaction too, but it was just curious.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_01]: I hadn't had that.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_01]: It was not even a thought that it crossed my mind across the last twenty four.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: Although we did that.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_02]: I will say that's a pretty good model.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_02]: The Dick Cheney model.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_02]: I used that with our good friend Buddy Wiley when he called me about three times.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_02]: The franchise was expanding into Tulsa and he's like, you know, if anybody that could do this and finally, but after about a month, I was like, yeah, I could do it.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_02]: I could do it and he hired me.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_02]: So we changed careers.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: Not the worst, see the world, not the worst, see the world.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_01]: So we've talked about some of the big picture stuff.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_01]: Let's just go program by our program and the major programs real quick and cars so we can start here.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_01]: The short term medium term stuff that the new AD is going to have to take over with football.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's pretty obvious too pronged.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_01]: First off,
- 29:10[SPEAKER_01]: Does Brett venibals bounce back this year or you have to make a big change there and then otherwise the other thing which something that jokes Leo is going to stay on for the west side expansion to the state in which has been talked about for years and years and years that includes the sweets that includes underhang which is a lot of the donor sections or at one point is the donor sections that includes
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: the worst press box in the SEC.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_01]: What are those spots outside of that?
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: Are there any other big hurdles that you see for like immediate first?
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like let's just say new AD tired from year one to year three.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_01]: What's the big things on the docket for the football program?
- 29:45[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's just so unpredictable right now, as you mentioned, this is kind of make a break time for brip intervals, obviously coming off to losing seasons, or yeah, to losing seasons in three years, not the standard here at OU, so there's just there's so many questions between that, the stadium renovations that you brought up.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_00]: keeping players that say something, say the season doesn't go well, and you see, jomits here transferring out, x player transferring out star after star leaving.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: How did they replace that?
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just, I'd say I wouldn't say that there's a negative trajectory for OU football, but it's just so unpredictable at this very moment I feel like.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think the flip side of that hoop, maybe you got some insight on this to be say things go really well.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_01]: Your decision at the top is very easy.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: You're keeping up with the venables.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think like the next big thing would be if things go really, really well and bin or buckles, the guy that people believe bin or buckles is he'll be probably a head coach in two or three years.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: I guess the flip side would be
- 30:43[SPEAKER_01]: is mediating is Brent Venibule's running BOC search is the GM, Jim Naggi running a new OCC search.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I think that that could be the other side is the victim of your success.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_01]: How do you smooth over everything there when it comes to truly establishing this model?
- 31:01[SPEAKER_02]: Do they have to run everything by Randall Stevenson?
- 31:04[SPEAKER_02]: Right?
- 31:05[SPEAKER_02]: The guy who hired the new athletic director, think about it.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_02]: You know, you get your eyes dotted in your T's crossed with the new AD and then he's like, you might want to talk to Randall, Mr. Stevenson about the new athletic, the new offensive coordinator.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_02]: My question is this, if Joe, Joe used the word yesterday to, and I may have misunderstood, so please correct me if I'm wrong.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_02]: He said it was the biggest project
- 31:32[SPEAKER_02]: Biggest stadium project they've had since replacing Benny Owens' bleachers.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_02]: Is that what he said?
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: He talked about the West Side project.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_01]: It'll be the biggest stadium project that Oklahoma's done.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_02]: So, first, no way.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_02]: The South Side was, it was, changed the entire feel of the stadium.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_02]: All right, so if you change the west side, what are you changing?
- 31:55[SPEAKER_02]: Ripping out the press box, putting in new suites of the top, I guess, like the east side.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to go through the foundation and tear out those like rusted troughs, the urinals that we all have to stand in while we're going the west side entrance, you know what I mean?
- 32:10[SPEAKER_02]: The busted concrete and the rusted metal and all that stuff.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_02]: All that's got to come out too.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to make it all brand new looking.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_02]: That's because that would be a pretty significant project.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_01]: I had to imagine that he was probably looking at it from, and this is not confirmed.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just assuming he meant from like a dollar is what what the dollar is to be put on it because you'd be talking about there'd be a determination to be made.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_01]: Do you and this is the trend of stadiums?
- 32:33[SPEAKER_01]: Do you maybe tick down capacity a little bit to go like
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: Chairbacks, instead of the bleachers, if not, or you're placing the bleachers, you're replacing at least one suite, you're probably expanding concourses again to put in more concession stands.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_01]: The press box, which is usually, when you're just talking about, from needs more room for the media side, they're probably going to spruce up the TV booths and the radio booths.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_01]: There are some sweets that are up there.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_02]: You put- It's not the TV radio booth, just because the window falls out of them when we're up there doing our podcast.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_02]: I mean,
- 33:06[SPEAKER_01]: when we do not want to talk about the number of wooden slats that we've had to be like, save this.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to get a report from workers stuff like that, but that becomes, I think, pricey pretty quickly when you're talking about building a big structure on top of the stands already.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_01]: So I would imagine that you have that, but then you look at some of the other stuff, for men's basketball and women's basketball, something Carson that basically don't talk about, another thing you stay on for, there's three big things.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: based on facilities, we'll talk about that in a second, the website expansion, then also whatever the Norman Entertainment district's gonna be, if it ever gets out of the red tape and all that stuff, but it feels like this portal class has been the biggest war chest that Porter's gotten.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_01]: If they make the turn of it again, how do you continue to sustain that for women's basketball?
- 33:49[SPEAKER_01]: They land Alia Chavez, very different kind of war chest.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about the number one overall recruit.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: How do you work with Ginny to continue to push things so you're not sweet, sixteen, you're a lead A, then you're final four.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, those are good problems to have, but it's stuff that the new AD is probably going to be a little bit more hands on with the cars.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think I feel like I think we had a consensus and probably around January that this is kind of the swan song for Porter Moser, but it was credit.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_00]: He really redeemed himself with the last few weeks of SEC play.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_00]: This portal class with Darian Reed, Xavier Brown, Tay Davis, Nigel Pack.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's those were four really good players that the sooner's are adding.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_00]: At least they have the potential to be really good.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: So if they can kind of build on what they built the last few weeks of the season making the tournament, maybe go one round farther this year.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: That would be huge and I feel like
- 34:42[SPEAKER_00]: The stadiums a big thing, or not the stadium.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_00]: The arena is a big thing for both men's and women's basketballs, trajectory, just in the future, just trying to learn talent to normal Oklahoma.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_00]: Boyd Noble Center is not a bad arena, but there are plenty nicer arenas in the SEC and other power programs across the nation.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's got to be a priority if you want to have a winning basketball programs on both the men's and women's side.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: You touched on the women.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, obviously, they've been a very successful program, sweet, sixteen hosting the first two rounds this year in Norman, getting the number one player in shop is
- 35:15[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, the trajectory, there's definitely potential for both programs to kind of get better and better each year.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_00]: You're starting to see more parity in women's basketball, opposed to just Yukon, Notre Dame, Tennessee winning it every year, like it kind of used to be, which works in the sooner's favor.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_00]: So there's definitely potential with the new AD really invests in basketball with some facility upgrades.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think both of those teams could be in good hands.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_01]: then you get over to the thing that jokes you mentioned that they feel there there's great momentum really really close to getting baseball rolling as far as finally breaking ground and getting that stuff done.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's basically like you need to reward skip Johnson with he's done a very, very good job of pushing that thing forward.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_01]: Now you need to help him take the next step with those facilities.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's pretty obvious as far as something that
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: Joe wants to stay on with, but if you can have anybody else that's an excellent fundraiser that can help push that finally across the finish line and get that going, that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world loves field.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_01]: You just got built.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_01]: Here's the big thing on the softball front that the new eighties can't deal with.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: How long is Patty gas?
- 36:21[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to keep wanting to coach.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_01]: She obviously has the open door for as long as she wants to, but I don't know if she's able to win a gold medal in twenty twenty eight with Team USA.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like that might be the perfect thing to say.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_01]: I have currently a bunch of national championships that you hope you add to between then.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_01]: I have a gold medal as the head coach and bring gold back to Team USA softball.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: what Patty's plan is, but she's already talked about if she has to step away for a period of time to focus on Team USA, that she's got JT gas, so in general, to play a stupid much like the Bob Stoop situation when Patty gas so decides to call it quits, it's gonna be shocking for the sticker shock, but it's gonna be, she's been, if she goes through twenty eight, thirty five years at Oklahoma, I mean, is it gonna be the most shocking thing if,
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: Coach has accomplished everything decides to hang it up in the next four or five years.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_01]: No, not at all.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's something that we've talked about on years ago, Ryan podcast, how much longer is Patty gun coach.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_02]: And then she got that class of twenty twenty one and you know, four straight national championships.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, she's she's got this.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_02]: She's going to get loves field built and then she's going to retire.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_02]: She's going to turn it over to JT and then she's going to retire, right?
- 37:37[SPEAKER_02]: None of that is even on the right feels like it's on the radar right now.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_01]: It'll be interesting there as far as that goes.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_01]: So what a way for us to blow back through, man, we took a little hiatus.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_01]: Who of you been vacationing?
- 37:52[SPEAKER_01]: I managed to leave the country for a little bit.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_01]: All that stuff.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's been a big welcome.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_01]: We were gonna bring the podcast back this week anyway.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_01]: And we're gonna do a lot of prep for us.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_01]: You see media days, which we get to here in a second.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_01]: But who, I guess it makes it a lot easier.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, yeah, the A-block joke stick on.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's done.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_02]: We, that's our lead.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_02]: We did not bury the lead, but yeah, man, it was good to get away a little bit this summer.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_02]: I had, I've had an unbelievable, what we'll call an off season.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_02]: You guys know, I posted it on my social media and I'm just, just got smack just absolutely blown away.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_02]: So proud that my, my alma mater, my high school asked me to come and speak at their graduation back on May,
- 38:39[SPEAKER_02]: I rehearsed and rehearsed and rehearsed.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_02]: Probably a couple hundred times a speech that was close to twenty minutes too long.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_02]: I apologize to the graduates and their families.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_02]: I know it was too long.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_02]: Just like everything else I do.
- 38:53[SPEAKER_02]: I talk too much.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_02]: I write too much.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_02]: But it was
- 38:58[SPEAKER_02]: It was so cool, you guys.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_02]: I cannot stress how amazing what an amazing feeling that was.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_02]: To be treated like a VIP for two days, you know, get a tour of the school, get a tour back, backseat, back behind the scenes of the football facility.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_02]: It was just amazing, but the coolest part.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_02]: getting to meet the seniors was amazing because that oh my god i thought our class was good back in eighty five forty years later i'm meeting the class of twenty twenty five in those guys are so smart and so uh... full of potential i can't wait to see what this class does
- 39:31[SPEAKER_02]: that was cool to getting to speak was cool three thousand four thousand people whatever it was that was I wasn't as nervous as I thought I would be and I kept waiting for myself to screw up and I didn't screw up so I kind of cruise through it because of all the rehearsal but no doubt the cool part was when nineteen of my friends and family who showed up at the graduation watch me speak I had arranged to buy them all dinner after at the local establishment we're going to call it apple beast for now
- 40:01[SPEAKER_02]: because we were eating good in the neighborhood and the old Hoover neighborhood.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_02]: And I walked in and they were all sitting together in this one corner of Applebee's and they all stood up and started clapping for me.
- 40:10[SPEAKER_02]: That was the coolest damn feeling I have ever had in my life and it'll never be topped.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_02]: It was so awesome.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_02]: So a couple of weeks later my wife and I drove up to the great lakes.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_02]: spent eight or nine, ten days on the road in an RV, which was with our little dog, which was pretty great, but at times you know, a RV life can.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_02]: can be a big challenge, but yeah, this is the upper peninsula of Michigan.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_02]: We stayed two nights right here, right up on the tip, up of Lake Superior, and then we stayed three nights down here, I think, at this one, on the upper peninsula, and then we crossed down into the oven mitt, stayed two more nights down on literally, I'm not even exaggerating, one of the top three beaches I've ever been on.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_02]: down a lake Michigan, sand, quiet, seventy degrees, sun, no kids running around.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_02]: It was amazing.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_02]: It was amazing.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_02]: Beautiful beach.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_01]: So, who's gonna come up to Michigan next year and then never leave?
- 41:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, it's, if we had property up there, we might not come back.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_02]: It's that beautiful.
- 41:22[SPEAKER_02]: It's amazing.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_02]: Such an amazing area, the Great Lakes.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_01]: You lit it up to some, I was just happy that day one of your trips, there were not like two arrests that we had to get on because I was hoping.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_01]: You were not around for that, but who went to Alaska a year ago and quite literally the second that he crossed over into Canada because he was driving.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm getting tips and things like that of an arrest, which led to finding the records of another arrest.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_01]: And I was just like,
- 41:54[SPEAKER_01]: John, there's this thing called legal liability and I done the right stuff, but before I published it, I just want you know, we're reporting on a rest record or whatever, and he was like, what?
- 42:03[SPEAKER_02]: I'm in jail.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_02]: So I crossed the border in Canada, and like five minutes later pulled over, and it was on the phone with him and Randall, and we were going over the ins and outs, the who's and what's and why's
- 42:18[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, I think we're good to publish this guys.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_02]: I can't see it because I don't have Wi-Fi.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_02]: I don't have internet, but I trust you.
- 42:24[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, it was big story, big week for us.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_02]: And I was in Canada.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_02]: That's why I trust you guys.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_02]: Do you want to do anything?
- 42:34[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, I want to give you the right to head back to your high school to give you the commencement.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_01]: Is that on the docket for you?
- 42:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, not in a very long time, I don't think.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_00]: And my graduating class was like six hundred people, so I'm not sure I'll ever get that education.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not quite as cool as you on Hoover.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure I'll get that mark.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's a high bar to clear, but yeah, don't think I'll be getting that.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I had, oh, you're going through it.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_01]: Jordan Evans was a year or two ahead of me much more accomplished.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you've heard of him tray young rolled through.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_01]: Numa North officially opened up.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's a count.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: It has not won, but two goals for the US one's national team.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks to Yasmeet, right?
- 43:13[SPEAKER_01]: And who played with my sister?
- 43:14[SPEAKER_01]: So one of the things that I was like, I'm way down the list.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_01]: Who have you ever got nervous?
- 43:18[SPEAKER_01]: Where you just thinking like, just imagine that it's Bob Stoops in front of me and imagine that I'm speaking to Bob Stoops and that'll get it done.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they worked out.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_02]: I was trying not to look at anybody's face except the people in the front row.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_02]: That's the secret.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm happy.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's the radio stuff.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just speaking to Eddie.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not talking to anybody else and people are texting him, but I'm just talking to Eddie.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_02]: It was funny looking out at the students, like half of them were like, you know, doing this, giving you this thing right here, like, and half of them were just like,
- 43:53[SPEAKER_02]: wrap it up for the audio version that was the dead face dead eye please stop talking so we can go party kind of face that I just made so
- 44:04[SPEAKER_01]: got to get it done.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_01]: So we enjoyed our break, but like we said, we'll be back on Wednesdays per usual.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_01]: We'll have the post game pods won't be back next Wednesday though, because we're headed to SEC media day.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_01]: That's local home a day.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_01]: We found out yesterday as well in the mix of everything else going on.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_01]: We knew Brent Middles.
- 44:20[SPEAKER_01]: We headed out there.
- 44:22[SPEAKER_01]: We'll also be linking up with new quarterback John Matier, so those are Mason Thomas and Robert Spear's Gittings.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_01]: So
- 44:29[SPEAKER_01]: Next week's pod, Carson and I will be linking up with you Thursday from somewhere in Atlanta, recapping everything there.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_01]: But I guess Carson, off off the rip, we'll get to the venables of it all here in a second.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_01]: But it makes sense, right?
- 44:41[SPEAKER_01]: Bring your, hopefully first round edge rusher, bring your veteran safety in your new quarterback, the new shiny toys for everyone to break down and get to talk to Trump sent the program on the player front, dad at SEC media days.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, those picks to me made a lot of sense, because I mean, John material is the big name.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: The biggest transfer arguably in the country obviously, Nico, Yavaleeva and Carson Beck were very big, but I mean, you could argue that material was the most wanted, most sought after quarterback in the portal this year.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_00]: Expectations were huge, so that makes a ton of sense.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_00]: Otherwise offensively, I mean, it's a lot of other transfers.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_00]: You see, Jayden ought.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_00]: You see, Giovanni Kimsen, Isaiah to Satania.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'm not sure who else they could have brought offensively as a returner from last year.
- 45:27[SPEAKER_00]: And then you see, R.S.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_00]: J. R. Mason Thomas, both of them were highly productive.
- 45:32[SPEAKER_00]: I'm really excited to see what our Mason Thomas does this year.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_00]: Because I mean, he kind of, he didn't come out of nowhere, but he had a break out of your last year.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_00]: He is going to be huge, a huge leader for a lot of these other talented defensive linemen that are younger and just kind of someone to look up to.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_00]: He is kind of the player that I think could be the impact player on the defense this year.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm excited to talk to him, see what his thoughts are going into the season.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to talk with the material just, I know that there's a big long story out there about his experience at the Manning Pass.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_01]: I see a category stuff like that, but just kind of continued what that obviously has developed has been looking like.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_01]: But I guess who when we get to the podium with the Brent Venables, it'll be interesting.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure he'll feel the questions about Joke Stigley on, because he has not spoken on that.
- 46:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure he'll get a typical hair on the hot seat thoughts, which we've heard his response to that.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_01]: But outside of that, I wonder if it's going to be
- 46:27[SPEAKER_01]: asking questions about the offense, because right now, you know, to Oklahoma soon as on a side.com, we're rolling through our pre camp debt chart series, which kind of serves as where do things stand coming out of spring practice where the battles going to be throughout fall camp.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_01]: And I just did the offensive line one here on Wednesday morning, and it's basically like, or
- 46:46[SPEAKER_01]: maybe not an orate center, but a definite position battle or it's one of those things where the wide receivers and the offensive line certainly its position battles galore with a lot of job still up for grabs come.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm probably oversimplifying this, but if you're going to bring another offensive player, I guess everybody's limited to three, although you know Texas is going to bring six.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_02]: If everybody's limited to three, then
- 47:10[SPEAKER_02]: You know, you got your three, but if you could bring another, it would probably troll you ever, right?
- 47:14[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, literally none of those other guys.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_02]: Fibetchi probably has got a starting job lockdown at right guard, but literally none of those other guys are definitely starting at offense on the offensive line.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_02]: Probably you've got some guys that are in like the lead or, you know, will be the pick to start camp.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_02]: as the one A right there.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_02]: But same with wide receiver, same with tight end.
- 47:39[SPEAKER_02]: You wouldn't bring any of those guys to media day.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_02]: So it's a reflection of the defense.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_02]: The defense is loaded.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_02]: Brent is probably going to get a lot of questions about the defense being loaded.
- 47:49[SPEAKER_02]: Again, you know, you lose Stutsman, you lose Bowman, you lose Downs.
- 47:52[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, they've got a good defensive line.
- 47:55[SPEAKER_02]: They've got some very good linebackers back.
- 47:57[SPEAKER_02]: They've got some talented defensive backs back.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to have to lean on the defense again this year.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_02]: I think everybody knows that.
- 48:03[SPEAKER_02]: And that's got to be what Brent folks is on because, hey, he's the defensive coordinator.
- 48:07[SPEAKER_02]: That's the question that he's going to get a lot of too.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_02]: How are you going to be a head coach and a DC VDC?
- 48:13[SPEAKER_02]: The full time DC, not sharing it with Ted Rue for somebody like that.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_02]: You're actually VDC.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_02]: So that's going to be, he'll get a lot of, I would think he would get a lot of questions about stuff like that.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_02]: Personalizes as well as naggy, you know, how much is your relationship
- 48:27[SPEAKER_02]: How is that evolving?
- 48:28[SPEAKER_02]: Or are you guys back and forth?
- 48:30[SPEAKER_02]: Is there any push pull?
- 48:32[SPEAKER_02]: I'd like to get to Brent pull the side for a few minutes and ask him some stuff about Navi as well.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that'd be good, especially because the last time we checked out of them is actually me asking him about it at the Crimson Combine, which was mainly just like, you're back to attack a portal window.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_01]: How is that gone?
- 48:49[SPEAKER_01]: All that stuff, then Navi struck with Jade Not and Chick-Might click coming in from Stanford immediately, but
- 48:56[SPEAKER_01]: You can't talk about the recruit still, Oklahoma with a big goose sag as far as in state guys go.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_01]: That would be a really interesting dynamic as far as that was something that Brett Venables was huge about getting back in Oklahoma school stuff like that.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_01]: And then suddenly Jim Nagy steps in and says, we don't need, uh, Mace Javes at Norman North.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_01]: We don't need some of these guys.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_01]: These are not the, the traits guys.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_01]: So, interested for that dynamic as well.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_01]: And it's been one of those things, uh, talking about the offense.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_01]: The other series we're running right now are our freshman Vietnam as far as five guys from the freshman class who could kind of crack in.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's very offensive because you look around the defense and go, okay, you got a pretty comfortable defense event, pretty comfortable defensive line, linebacker, good corner, good, you're looking at, okay, could the wider receivers be guys?
- 49:43[SPEAKER_01]: Then obviously, we will be riding about Mike Pesucita, but it's one of those things that's kind of the reflection of
- 49:51[SPEAKER_01]: The defense, they've done a pretty good job of bringing that talent through in the offense.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody transferred out or was hurt.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: It kind of feels like you were either injured, transferred out, or try ever it, who was hurt to start the year and then got going.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_01]: So it'll be interesting there.
- 50:05[SPEAKER_01]: And it'll also be interesting guys, especially maybe to hear Brip Vinnables take or maybe some clarification.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_01]: There was the big freak out that ran around Oklahoma Twitter about
- 50:15[SPEAKER_01]: Jim naggy here appeared on the triple option podcast.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_01]: That's the the Fox sports one and his comments about hey
- 50:22[SPEAKER_01]: if he's talking about OU's internal grading system.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_01]: If they had the exact same grade on a five star kid and a three star kid, but for OU, it's the exact same grade.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_01]: You like the official business for the five star kid, maybe it's a value, plan to grab the three star.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_01]: How'd you kind of take those comments, Carson, because I know that people freaked out and took it to assume, why is OU not going to recruit any five stars?
- 50:44[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's not quite what Jim Nagy said, but, I mean, I guess beauty isn't as bolder.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I agree with what you said.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think those comments were taken a little bit out of context.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_00]: Oklahoma is still going to be going after some of the five star guys.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_00]: I actually kind of like Nagi's perspective and trying to find diamonds in the rough because, oh, you, I mean, you look at it financially.
- 51:07[SPEAKER_00]: They have money, but they don't have Texas A&M oil money.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_00]: They don't have UT money.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_00]: They don't have Phil O'Neill work in money.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_00]: They have money, but they don't have that kind of resources where they can buy most five star prospects.
- 51:18[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to have to get creative and you're seeing success from that from other programs.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_00]: You look at a team like Indiana.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_00]: That is not the richest athletic department.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_00]: They don't recruit that well as far as stars, rankings go.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_00]: They made the playoff last year, Arizona State.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_00]: They have not recruited well in a very long time.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_00]: They make the playoff last year take Texas double over time.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_00]: Kansas State's done it for years and been one of the more competitive big twelve programs.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, OU wants to be better than those teams have been consistently, but they're definitely, we'll have to be some sort of ability to find diamonds in the rough.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_00]: And I think Nagy's definitely someone that can do that.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_00]: I've seen him on Twitter analyze a lot of film.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_00]: He analyzed Jade and long before he became a sooner last year.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_00]: tweet out how good he was entering last season at Cal.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_00]: Now he's a sooner.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_00]: Got that talent.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_00]: He's really good at evaluating it.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I think I think sooner nation needs to calm down just a little bit.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_00]: They're still going to get some big prospects.
- 52:14[SPEAKER_00]: You see that with Bob Bentley.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's overly alarming.
- 52:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I'm essentially an Oklahoma record for two and a half decades Bob Stoops didn't out recruit Mac Brown, right?
- 52:28[SPEAKER_02]: Mac Brown always had the better recruiting class.
- 52:30[SPEAKER_02]: Mac Brown always had more five stars.
- 52:31[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, guess who won the game more often than not?
- 52:35[SPEAKER_02]: Guess who won the big twelve more than anybody else combined, you know, Oklahoma with those recruiting classes that were good, but not top three, not number one like Mac Brown used to get.
- 52:45[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that's the model that Oklahoma has to stick to.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_02]: you know you're in the SEC now you're going up against SEC the best of the best you're going up against Georgia you know you're going up against Alabama you're going up against Texas and their money you're going up against as as Carson said Texas A&M who hasn't won anything since nineteen thirty nine World War II hadn't started yet for the United States but
- 53:09[SPEAKER_02]: Yet they spend that money.
- 53:10[SPEAKER_02]: You know, they go out and they land those five stars.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_02]: Look at that recruiting class just what three or four years ago.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_02]: Number one in the country and what did that become?
- 53:19[SPEAKER_02]: Go get the players.
- 53:21[SPEAKER_02]: I should say, continue to get the players that you think provide value.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_02]: And you think that your culture at Oklahoma.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_02]: That's what Jim Nagy's got to do.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_02]: And Brent Vendable says a real handle on that.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_02]: And I think the staff does as well.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I think Nagy is going to be, there's going, I don't think there's going to be a lot of fighting.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_02]: between the head coach and the GM, but I will say I'm a little surprised that there's zero probably gonna be probably gonna finish with zero.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, perhaps on this, oh, you football team because that's something like you said Ryan Brent Reynolds has emphasized, strategized.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_02]: He's a Kansas guy who played at Kansas State.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_02]: He knows what in-state talent means as much as anybody.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_02]: He built the national championship defense that had a bunch of Oklahoma kids or a handful of Oklahoma kids on it.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_02]: They've won Heisman trophies.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_02]: right with guys who worked three star recruits in the state of Oklahoma.
- 54:18[SPEAKER_02]: So you can't just shut it off and say there's no recruits here, but you know, you assess the whole thing, big big picture wise.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_02]: Some years in Oklahoma are better than others.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_02]: This this twenty twenty six class might not necessarily be the best and there might be some other prospects right now that Oklahoma is going after.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_02]: that are better than what you could find at that position for that value, right?
- 54:42[SPEAKER_02]: And in the state of Oklahoma, and you know, you want to be Alabama for him, you want to be Texas for him, you want to be Georgia for him, you're going to have to go out and stick your neck out a little bit and tell these Oklahoma kids, you might have to wait till late in the recruiting cycle.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's like the, well, I guess would be an imperfect storm for Jim naggy because all along, some of the brick that was Amazon naggy have talked about is that his scouting department, they're probably going to have much more of an impact in the twenty seven class than the twenty eight class, because for a lot of the twenty six kids, you're already down the line.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_01]: And when you look at the current class, Oklahoma sits thirty third, three, three in the two four seven sports.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_01]: team rankings, fifteen commits, seven of those four stars, eight of those graded as three stars.
- 55:30[SPEAKER_01]: So that paired with in-state losses from kids that looks like Oklahoma backed off of, which will have a heavy naïy influence.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_01]: That's going to be there as well.
- 55:40[SPEAKER_01]: And it's one of those things where if you're going to bring in a pro scouting department, you have to give them not just this year, next year to scout, but then a couple more years to develop that.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_01]: and Jim naggy's right that they're NFL guys top to bottom all over the place right you can find those guys and FCS I guess the one thing I cut back the other way on is the scouting services are not perfect at all by any means when it comes to hey there's a two star kid or an unrated kid or a three star kid in the NFL more than anything though the last national champions for the fifteen years what do they have more than anybody else more five stars in more four stars like that they're not that wrong on that
- 56:20[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I just, uh, also, again, Jim naggy didn't get, he did not give like a Mike Gandhi S quote, where Gandhi's talked about we're not going to get those guys.
- 56:28[SPEAKER_01]: So why recruit will take three stars in the four stars, four stars in the five stars.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_01]: What he said is if we internally have the same ranking on it, there's a value play.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_01]: Great.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_01]: That doesn't mean like Michael Vassucy may have had the top ranking in the class a year ago.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_01]: And if Jim naggy's evolved, they still might have pulled out all the stops to get my consistency.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_01]: We just haven't seen that yet because it seems like these are the
- 56:49[SPEAKER_01]: money ball, budget plays, kind of around the edges.
- 56:52[SPEAKER_01]: Once they've established their relationship with kind of the top targets in this year's class, because now you wasn't in here, top Edward.
- 57:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yep, good point.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_02]: Um, the fact that he, uh, he tweeted this out.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_02]: I think you made mention of it a few minutes ago.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_02]: He wants to see that full cycle that full.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_02]: Hi.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_02]: My name's Jim Nagy.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_02]: I'm the general manager at University of Oklahoma to where you sign that kid and bring him in and and watch him play as a freshman.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_02]: That whole cycle.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_02]: He wants to see he wants to have one of those and he hasn't had one yet.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_02]: So, uh, it's going to be it.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be next year at this time before he has just one of those.
- 57:29[SPEAKER_01]: It'll be interesting to continue to track and continue to keep rolling.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's like a friend of mine put it.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_01]: If you're going to bring in a GM, you got to let them do GM stuff.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_01]: You can't freak out at the very first time.
- 57:41[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see that that doesn't mean it's going to be perfect either way.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_01]: Not telling you that by the beans, but to a certain extent, much like with Brett Vettable, she'd let him recruit for a year or two.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_01]: Because like that's going to be the new, hey, you got to let this front office work for a little bit before they can actually get it there.
- 57:56[SPEAKER_02]: Both said the word, use the word multiple times, neggy and venibles, use the word collaborative.
- 58:02[SPEAKER_02]: So the coaches, the coaching staff, the head coach and the staff are going to continue to evaluate as they have.
- 58:10[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to continue to write their own evaluations, make their own assessments.
- 58:14[SPEAKER_02]: But they're going to feed that information to Jim nagging Jim nagging his staff, which he said at last count on that podcast, the triple option podcast, eight or nine guys is what he wants.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think he's quite an eight or nine yet, but he's getting their quick.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_02]: Those two staff put their heads together on what on guys that the
- 58:33[SPEAKER_02]: GM staff, the personnel staff have identified and the coaching staff have identified.
- 58:39[SPEAKER_02]: They put their heads together, they get, you know, compare notes, see what's, see who agrees with who and then they put their heads together again on what they disagree on.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_02]: How can you, how can you lose with, you know, an extra set of eyes literally on every recruit, right?
- 58:56[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's, that's going to be a great model.
- 58:58[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to work out what Oklahoma has to worry about is the whole, you know,
- 59:03[SPEAKER_02]: is venables the right guy who's the athletic director how much influence does Randall Stevenson have.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's a lot bigger than just evaluating talent and landing four or five stars.
- 59:13[SPEAKER_01]: And then the answer also here's something else that relationships are everything but.
- 59:19[SPEAKER_01]: part of being in a use or Oklahoma schools is when they have a five star quality kid three years from now you don't want that coaching staff to be a school and that's not something that Jim Nagy's crew has to deal with to the same level that you do as a college coach so all all of that stuff will be stuff I'm interested to talk with printman levels about next week at SEC media day car tonight will be there and
- 59:40[SPEAKER_01]: As always, Oklahoma suitors on Si.com is your place for all of our as you see media day coverage.
- 59:46[SPEAKER_01]: If you missed any of the, I think it ended up being in all total eleven pieces of content from the jokes, diglion, Joe Harris, press conference.
- 59:54[SPEAKER_01]: That's all there.
- 59:55[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma suitors on Si.com.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_01]: We're still rolling through our freshmen.
- 59:58[SPEAKER_01]: Vietnam series.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_01]: We'll start running through our depth chart, pre-cant depth chart, all that stuff.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_01]: Be sure you're following us at
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_01]: As soon as on a side, be sure you got John at Johnny Hoover.
- 1:00:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm at Underscort Riot Chapman and Carson's at Carson D field on the X Twitter, whatever the hell it's called.
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_01]: As always, we'll be continue to flow through there.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_01]: If you want all the videos, John Hoover media, that's the YouTube spot to be.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_01]: But boys, have I left anything else out or do we need to Carson, I get back in for Atlanta?
- 1:00:29[SPEAKER_02]: I think this is going to be the first
- 1:00:31[SPEAKER_02]: I'm trying to remember the last time I didn't go to a media day.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_02]: And this is just by choice.
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_02]: I just want to run point kind of here in studio eighty eight and I say it's studio eighty eight because of course.
- 1:00:43[SPEAKER_02]: Studio eighty eight.
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_02]: That's me.
- 1:00:46[SPEAKER_02]: Well, the high school.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_02]: I'm throwing it back to the high school days.
- 1:00:49[SPEAKER_02]: You guys, come on.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_01]: But no, I think you would get a high school like that the throwback a new eighty eight jersey for you still rocking the throwback around.
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's a throwback.
- 1:00:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's it the jersey itself, which is built for shoulder pads has shrunk into the point where it's a little snow got me.
- 1:01:06[SPEAKER_02]: So, but no, I think this is the first time I will have missed attending in person a media days conference media days since
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_02]: Like, two thousand one, two thousand two, maybe?
- 1:01:19[SPEAKER_02]: I know, that's crazy.
- 1:01:21[SPEAKER_02]: So I didn't even think about that, but I just decided, you know what?
- 1:01:24[SPEAKER_02]: Time to hand it over to the next generation.
- 1:01:26[SPEAKER_02]: You guys are gonna kill it.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_02]: Carson, have you ever covered up conference media, does?
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_00]: I've covered Mountain West basketball media day.
- 1:01:33[SPEAKER_00]: That's it.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_00]: So this is all new to me.
- 1:01:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'm thrilled for this.
- 1:01:37[SPEAKER_00]: Sixteen teams obviously.
- 1:01:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'm proud of the South.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_00]: So as always, I love college football.
- 1:01:42[SPEAKER_00]: I've always been passionate about it.
- 1:01:43[SPEAKER_00]: So this is this is fun.
- 1:01:45[SPEAKER_00]: I told you guys before we got on.
- 1:01:47[SPEAKER_00]: We're traveling.
- 1:01:47[SPEAKER_00]: We're doing a podcast.
- 1:01:49[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like fall and man.
- 1:01:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:52[SPEAKER_02]: All the downtown at four days in downtown Atlanta with Ryan.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_02]: You've got almost no chance of coming back without trouble following you.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_02]: Ryan, take care of it now.
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_01]: We've got the, we won't be hitting up any reputable wing establishments.
- 1:02:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's for sure.
- 1:02:09[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll avoid those.
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_01]: If you see me in the battery on Friday, say what's up, and also understand that it might take me a second to recognize who you are, but come say what's up.
- 1:02:19[SPEAKER_01]: So you got brains Yankees on Friday night.
- 1:02:21[SPEAKER_01]: That's, that's the treat.
- 1:02:22[SPEAKER_01]: You a grind grind grind grind because trust me, Carson, it will be a grind.
- 1:02:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's a circus.
- 1:02:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think last year, they were talking, I came up with a second or third.
- 1:02:32[SPEAKER_01]: When you talk about college football playoff, Super Bowl, SEC media days, those are the three largest credentialed football events in the country every single year.
- 1:02:43[SPEAKER_01]: So you get over a thousand credentials, issue for SEC media day, which is a little bit of a Duke to do.
- 1:02:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's a big one.
- 1:02:51[SPEAKER_01]: And Ryan's got something to do.
- 1:02:54[SPEAKER_01]: And the player.
- 1:02:56[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we'll be at the the the the contract with Hall of Fame, which is where the cool it like I've ever been, Carson, the contract with Hall of Fame in Atlanta is incredible.
- 1:03:03[SPEAKER_01]: You might have to maybe like Friday on your way out when they kind of have broken down all the media day stuff.
- 1:03:10[SPEAKER_01]: It is an absolutely incredible museum and a must have if you are rolling through anywhere in Atlanta in your college football fan, like absolutely need to stop through because they do a fantastic job.
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've got to check that out.
- 1:03:24[SPEAKER_02]: I think if they still have it, you have to do it.
- 1:03:27[SPEAKER_02]: It's an indoor little indoor turf little area marked off, you know, and you can kick a feel goal through these uprights.
- 1:03:36[SPEAKER_02]: Eric Bailey and I were there in gosh, that was the Tennessee game in twenty fifteen bakers first year as a starter.
- 1:03:44[SPEAKER_02]: And so we were there for that.
- 1:03:46[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's right.
- 1:03:47[SPEAKER_02]: I put two of them right down the middle.
- 1:03:49[SPEAKER_02]: Right down the middle, thirty yarders.
- 1:03:51[SPEAKER_02]: Come on.
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_01]: No burrito drama too, which was the most important thing.
- 1:03:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that turf area is where actually all the press conference stuff's going to be set up that like the radio roast.
- 1:04:02[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe on the second floor where the museum portion.
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_01]: And then that turf top area is going to be the main stage.
- 1:04:08[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to have your SEC network desk and all that stuff.
- 1:04:11[SPEAKER_01]: So it'll be quite the production per usual with a second.
- 1:04:15[SPEAKER_02]: It was Patrick Queen had his big moment where he basically crapped all over Oklahoma that year before the before the peach ball.
- 1:04:22[SPEAKER_02]: And that was Spencer Rattler's breakout performance as well in the media, which you can still find that video on my YouTube channel.
- 1:04:29[SPEAKER_02]: It's one of my most watch YouTube videos of all time.
- 1:04:33[SPEAKER_01]: You got that and then it's like that and a bunch of softball videos.
- 1:04:36[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, all right, we will be picking up shot.
- 1:04:39[SPEAKER_01]: We'll be car side, we wheels up on Sundays.
- 1:04:41[SPEAKER_01]: That content will start coming out Monday.
- 1:04:43[SPEAKER_01]: Don't wait till Wednesday, Monday, Greg Stanky takes the podium and then we'll be tracking down a ton of, oh, you related stuff all week long.
- 1:04:50[SPEAKER_01]: We'll be hitting up a bunch of our sister sites to get there like Ole Miss.
- 1:04:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Lane Kiffin's gonna get his stuff from the podium.
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get the nitty gritty from the people who cover Ole Miss.
- 1:04:58[SPEAKER_01]: Whether or you fancy to look out for all that stuff as they perform.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_01]: with everybody on the schedule.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_02]: We talked about the transfer quarterback from Oklahoma plays anybody else bring in the transfer quarterback to the SEC media days this week.
- 1:05:12[SPEAKER_02]: I think I think I'll be talking for the Tigers.
- 1:05:19[SPEAKER_02]: Do you think he's going to get any questions from the OU media this week?
- 1:05:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think he might.
- 1:05:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think he might.
- 1:05:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think I might hit our old guy Jackson.
- 1:05:26[SPEAKER_01]: I might talk to him in the bowels of a Baton Rouge car sniper did in the last moment that we talked to Jack Stardell.
- 1:05:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's a little bit of reunion.
- 1:05:35[SPEAKER_02]: See the suit game for Mr. R. Brandon Thompson will be there too for Mississippi State.
- 1:05:39[SPEAKER_02]: He's representing the Bulldogs at Big Twelve Media Day.
- 1:05:42[SPEAKER_02]: So he probably not going to give us many questions as Jackson.
- 1:05:46[SPEAKER_01]: And C.C.
- 1:05:47[SPEAKER_01]: Media Day is not big enough.
- 1:05:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's another year.
- 1:05:49[SPEAKER_01]: The last thing they do.
- 1:05:51[SPEAKER_01]: We can't do it anymore.
- 1:05:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's an X here.
- 1:05:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's an X here.
- 1:05:52[SPEAKER_02]: We got an X. We got an X. We got an X. We got a X. We got a X. We got a X. We got a X. We got a X. We got a X. We got a X. We got a X. We got a X. We got a X. We got a X. - 1:06:10[SPEAKER_01]: That gets the side of me to shut this thing down today.
- 1:06:12[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk to you guys next Thursday, Oklahoma Studios on a side that's a website.
- 1:06:16[SPEAKER_01]: Follow us all the places and tell them, though.
- 1:06:19[SPEAKER_01]: Be good and enjoy your summer.
- 1:06:20[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk to you next week.
