- 0:00DANI: I had a crazy dream last night. Do you dream in
- 0:02sign language ever?
- 0:02KARA: Very few times but I have
- 0:05a little bit.
- 0:05DANI: I had a dream that there was a child
- 0:09that like needed my help.
- 0:09KARA: Okay.
- 0:09DANI: Who was signing
- 0:12to me and I was signing back and like neither
- 0:14one of us could understand each other.
- 0:14KARA: Oh no.
- 0:14DANI: And
- 0:17it was very stressful.
- 0:17KARA: I had a dream that I went
- 0:19to a Wingspan tournament. It was really fun.
- 0:19DANI: I
- 0:22got an email from someone at, what is it called?
- 0:26KARA: Is this the one who talked about the sign language
- 0:28transcription?
- 0:28DANI: Yes. I got an email from Jenny
- 0:31at Sign Up Media. They have a free browser extension
- 0:35that provides sign language interpretation for
- 0:39content on streaming platforms, including Disney
- 0:41Plus and Netflix. And most recently, they launched
- 0:45a project putting out interpretation for all
- 0:48eight of this year's Best Picture nominees.
- 0:48KARA: That's
- 0:51exciting.
- 0:51DANI: Yeah. So I'm going to test it out.
- 0:54Tomorrow, I'm covering the Oscars tomorrow.
- 0:54KARA: It
- 0:56can't be AI, right? They must have a real person
- 0:59interpreting all these.
- 0:59DANI: It must be a real person.
- 1:02KARA: Like they do with HBO. I think they're trying
- 1:04to get ahead of what HBO is doing because I think
- 1:06HBO is doing, I personally think HBO is doing
- 1:08a fantastic job with the ASL interpretation.
- 1:11DANI: Yes.
- 1:11KARA: I'm watching The Pit every week with ASL.
- 1:13DANI: Oh my gosh, how was Trash?
- 1:13KARA: It was really good.
- 1:16KARA: I have a lot of thoughts on it. So Trash is,
- 1:19this was kind of groundbreaking and extremely
- 1:22cool to see. But these two guys, Joey and Andrew,
- 1:27play Jake and Tim, two Deaf roommates who live
- 1:31together in New York City. And basically the
- 1:33whole premise of the show is that they need to
- 1:37take out the trash and they're fighting over
- 1:39who needs to do it. But then as the show goes
- 1:42on, you learn more about the two characters.
- 1:45And also the audience participates in the discussion.
- 1:50DANI: Oh, okay.
- 1:50KARA: So they do polls and you write on a
- 1:53whiteboard, like, should Jake do this or Tim?
- 1:57And then we got to vote with the card. So that
- 2:00was fun. And then there was also a guy who played
- 2:02a jukebox. And whenever they put money in the
- 2:06jukebox, it was just a guy. He would speak and
- 2:09translate for the two guys, which was confusing
- 2:12because I was like, why is he speaking? But then
- 2:15other people, other characters in the show kept
- 2:18saying the jukebox was playing really loud music.
- 2:20But we, the audience, were hearing him translate
- 2:23ASL.
- 2:23DANI: Okay.
- 2:23KARA: So that was confusing.
- 2:23DANI: Did he translate
- 2:27through the entire show?
- 2:27KARA: So a lot of it was ASL
- 2:30only.
- 2:30DANI: Interesting.
- 2:30KARA: So I think a lot of hearing
- 2:33people were like, oh my God, I am so lost. But
- 2:35that's the point.
- 2:35DANI: Right.
- 2:35KARA: Like, that's what Deaf
- 2:38people experience. And then at some points when
- 2:40they really wanted the audience to know something,
- 2:42then they would turn, quote unquote, turn on
- 2:44the jukebox.
- 2:44DANI: Interesting.
- 2:44KARA: But, like, I got most
- 2:47of the conversations that would happen without
- 2:49sign. But these guys are, like, capital D deaf.
- 2:53But one of the things we learned is that Jake
- 2:56has more, like, the neoliberal view on deafness,
- 3:00as in, like, I pulled myself up by the bootstraps
- 3:02and I work this job and I also speak.
- 3:02DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 3:05Okay, Daphne coded.
- 3:05KARA: Literally. But then Tim has
- 3:09kind of the view of, like, I'm not really working.
- 3:12I'm taking SSI from the government because fuck
- 3:16the government. They don't care about Deaf people.
- 3:18DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 3:18KARA: And also, he got arrested, and he has
- 3:22an ankle monitor on. Because of miscommunication
- 3:25with the police. Very Emmett-coded.
- 3:25DANI: Okay, Emmett.
- 3:28KARA: Daphne and Emmett. But he's very much like, fuck
- 3:30the police, fuck the system. Why should I get
- 3:32a job? Why should I do all these things they
- 3:34expect me to do? And then, yeah, that was interesting.
- 3:39And then, at the end, it's kind of revealed that
- 3:43these two men are talking to the audience.
- 3:43DANI: Okay.
- 3:48KARA: But it's revealed that the audience is like their
- 3:51demons. It's like the shit that deaf people
- 3:55have to go through. So they point at different
- 3:58people in the audience and they're like, this
- 4:00is deaf paranoia and this is dinner table syndrome
- 4:02and this is this. And I was like, okay. I think
- 4:06that was my one qualm is, one, I didn't like
- 4:09the jukebox character.
- 4:09DANI: Okay.
- 4:09KARA: Because I was like,
- 4:13I think they needed some way to interpret ASL for
- 4:17the viewers, the mostly hearing viewers, which
- 4:21I get. I think they should have just done captions.
- 4:23And then at one point, the jukebox breaks, so
- 4:26I think they should have just had the captions,
- 4:27quote, unquote, break. It's a circle theater,
- 4:30and there's, like, projectors on three sides.
- 4:34And there is a character. She's hard of hearing
- 4:37in real life, but she speaks in the show, and
- 4:39she plays, like, a hearing woman who, like, is
- 4:41appropriating deaf culture, basically, and using
- 4:44social media. Sounds like a lot of people we
- 4:46know. But using social media to appropriate deaf
- 4:50culture. But when she speaks, her captions are
- 4:53on the projector. So I was like, well, why not
- 4:55just project the captions for the deaf men instead
- 4:59of having the stupid jukebox character? I don't
- 5:01know.
- 5:01DANI: Yeah, interesting. When you were saying
- 5:05at the end that they're like the audience was
- 5:07the demons and they're like you're, you're dinner
- 5:10table syndrome, all I could think of was the video
- 5:13of that one reporter interviewing Cynthia
- 5:16Erivo and Ariana Grande on the Wicked For Good
- 5:19press tour and they sit down and she's like, I
- 5:21love you both. You're my autism and you're my
- 5:23ADHD.
- 5:23KARA: Is this the same one?
- 5:23DANI: No.
- 5:23KARA: Same gay one .
- 5:23DANI: No.
- 5:27KARA: Okay.
- 5:27DANI: Not, not the same as holding space. No, it's
- 5:31like this Australian reporter. And Cynthia and
- 5:33Ariana look like they've been shot. Like they're
- 5:36like trying to stay like so serious. But anyway,
- 5:40that sounds really cool.
- 5:40KARA: But the light shone
- 5:43on me at one point. I think I was Dinner Table
- 5:45Syndrome.
- 5:45DANI: Wow.
- 5:45KARA: And I was like, me? It's funny
- 5:48because I know the guy Joey who plays Jake. So
- 5:51he looked straight in my eyes and said Dinner
- 5:53Table Syndrome. And I was like, Joey!
- 5:53DANI: Joey.
- 5:53KARA: That's
- 5:56me.
- 5:56DANI: Wow.
- 5:56KARA: You know me. I feel like I should also
- 5:59share the Mitski story to our listeners.
- 5:59DANI: Oh,
- 6:02my God. So much happened to you.
- 6:02KARA: So much happened
- 6:05this week.
- 6:05DANI: Let's talk about Mitski.
- 6:05KARA: Friends,
- 6:08do you like Mitski? If so, she's a great performer.
- 6:12This is my second time seeing her. And she did,
- 6:14like, a week-long residency at the Shed in Hudson
- 6:18Yard.
- 6:18DANI: Great space.
- 6:18KARA: Great space. I have never
- 6:22been to a concert in the Shed just the year,
- 6:24like, the crazy one we saw last week. Yeah. But
- 6:27I got tickets to Mitski, and I went with my friend
- 6:30Emma. Hi, Emma. And then my wife. And I asked
- 6:34for an ASL interpreter. And they hired the interpreter,
- 6:38not through the Shed, but the Bowery, which I
- 6:41believe is the tour company. So they got the
- 6:44interpreter, and they collaborated with the Shed.
- 6:46So I arrived. They're very helpful. I go sit.
- 6:48The ADA section is in the back of the theater. And I'm like,
- 6:52okay, whatever. It's fine. It's in the back and
- 6:54raised. I prefer to be, like, right up close.
- 6:58Selfishly, because I like being up close.
- 6:58DANI: Obviously.
- 7:00KARA: But also, it's just so much easier to understand
- 7:03everything.
- 7:03DANI: True.
- 7:03KARA: Mitski starts. She's great.
- 7:06I love the interpreters. They're doing a great
- 7:08job. And then about three or four songs in, this
- 7:12man comes up, and he starts signing to one of
- 7:14the interpreters who's not signing for me. And
- 7:17I'm... There's some sort of conflict going on.
- 7:20And then my interpreter starts translating for
- 7:23me and says, oh, they want to dim the lights
- 7:26or shut off the lights. And I was like, who's
- 7:28they? And she was like, Mitski. Mitski herself
- 7:31requested that the lights be shut off. Because,
- 7:34you know, the theater is dark and they have like
- 7:36a light that's- a tiny little stage light that
- 7:39goes right above the interpreter. It's like connected
- 7:42to the clipboard or something.
- 7:42DANI: Yeah. It's like
- 7:45a little podium.
- 7:45KARA: Yeah. They have- The interpreter
- 7:49is always on the podium. They have the lyrics
- 7:51out on an iPad or a paper. And they also have
- 7:55the set list. So they just read from that and
- 7:57then they interpret and obviously also listen
- 7:59to what's going on.
- 7:59DANI: And the light is literally
- 8:02like a reading light.
- 8:02KARA: It's a reading light.
- 8:02DANI: Like
- 8:04the light you would clip to your book in bed.
- 8:06KARA: That's exactly what it was. It was clipped to
- 8:09the podium.
- 8:09DANI: Yeah. It's not intrusive at all.
- 8:12KARA: No. But this man comes up and says, Mitski personally
- 8:15has requested that this light is distracting
- 8:17and that it needs to go off. And instead of going,
- 8:22oh, wait, I just realized this is for ASL. My
- 8:25bad. Let me tell Mitski.
- 8:25DANI: Yeah, who maybe can't
- 8:29see that there's an interpreter.
- 8:29KARA: Who can't see
- 8:30because we're on the end of the theater.
- 8:30DANI: Yeah.
- 8:32KARA: They can't see anything that's going on. He,
- 8:35like, doubles down. The interpreter's trying
- 8:37to explain, like, no. These women were very nice.
- 8:40They were advocating for me. But he was like,
- 8:42no, the light needs to go out.
- 8:42DANI: Didn't he start
- 8:44physically putting it down with his hands?
- 8:44KARA: He
- 8:46started physically pushing the light down. And
- 8:48the interpreter was moving the light back up.
- 8:50And then he's pushing it back down. And they're
- 8:53going back and forth. And then at one point,
- 8:55the interpreter was like, okay, Kara, tell him
- 8:58you need the light. And I was like, yeah, it's
- 9:00true. I do need the light. But then I was like,
- 9:02oh, my God. Mitski noticed me.
- 9:02DANI: I'm really glad
- 9:05that you saw it that way.
- 9:05KARA: But then we dimmed
- 9:07the lights a little. And then it was fine. I
- 9:09could still see. It just wasn't as bright as
- 9:12it was before. And then the show goes on without
- 9:15a hitch. And then after the show, the guy comes
- 9:19back and he was like, Mitski herself personally
- 9:23apologizes. But it's not really her fault. It's
- 9:26the Shed and the Bowery's fault because the two
- 9:29of them worked on getting this interpreter. And
- 9:31all they needed to do is say, Mitski, break a leg,
- 9:34have a great show. By the way, there's going
- 9:36to be a light in the back for ASL interpretation.
- 9:38DANI: Yeah.
- 9:38KARA: If you're wondering what that is. And she
- 9:41probably thought she has, like, a policy with
- 9:43no filming. Yeah, she probably thought it was
- 9:46someone full flash on. Like, full flash on filming
- 9:49for 20 minutes straight. So she was like, can
- 9:52you see what that's about? And also, later on,
- 9:55there was an emergency and people started flashing
- 9:57lights to get security's attention. So I think
- 10:01she was like, what's that about? Also, it's distracting.
- 10:04And instead, the guy should have just talked
- 10:06to her earpiece and been like, it's ASL, but
- 10:08no. So Mitski, ableist. I'm kidding. I'm kidding.
- 10:12DANI: Tried to dim a deaf person's light.
- 10:12KARA: Wow.
- 10:12DANI: Wow.
- 10:16KARA: But just kidding. Physically and metaphorically.
- 10:18DANI: Fuck that guy, though. Because also, like, if
- 10:20you work at the venue, have some situational
- 10:23awareness. Maybe you approach, you see that interpretation
- 10:26is happening, and you say, oh, that's obviously
- 10:29what's happening. That light is clearly essential
- 10:32for access. I'm not even going to interrupt.
- 10:35I'm just going to say back to Mitski, that light
- 10:39is on for access.
- 10:39KARA: And Mitski would have been
- 10:41like, got it.
- 10:41DANI: Yeah.
- 10:41KARA: And then continued singing.
- 10:44DANI: Yeah.
- 10:44KARA: Which is crazy. But this went on not too
- 10:47long, like less than five minutes. But the three
- 10:50of us were sitting-
- 10:50DANI: Five minutes of your experience
- 10:53that was interrupted because of that.
- 10:53KARA: And the
- 10:55three of us were quite uncomfortable.
- 10:55DANI: I bet.
- 10:58KARA: And my wife and my friend are both hearing. So
- 11:00they're listening and watching this conversation
- 11:02like, oh.
- 11:02DANI: What song was playing during all of
- 11:05that?
- 11:05KARA: I don't remember.
- 11:05DANI: Do you remember?
- 11:05KARA: No,
- 11:07I don't.
- 11:07DANI: Damn.
- 11:07KARA: I was too distracted.
- 11:07DANI: Right. Yeah,
- 11:11exactly. It was distracting. There was a lot
- 11:13going on. It's not fair to you. They should have
- 11:16prepared better.
- 11:16KARA: They literally, yeah, they really
- 11:19should have prepared better. And the access consultant
- 11:22came up to me after and apologized and they asked
- 11:25for my feedback. And I was like, guys, just communicate
- 11:26better.
- 11:26DANI: Yeah.
- 11:26KARA: So overall, pretty good concert.
- 11:31Weird experience.
- 11:31DANI: Yeah.
- 11:31KARA: Great ASL interpreters.
- 11:34Love you guys. Thank you, Rori and Selena. So
- 11:37that was my Wednesday last week.
- 11:37DANI: A lot of theater
- 11:40lately.
- 11:40KARA: I love the theater.
- 11:40DANI: I know.
- 11:40KARA: [IN A FRENCH ACCENT] The theater.
- 11:43Should we get to the show? Season 1, Episode
- 11:5920, Game On, which aired March 6, 2012.
- 11:59DANI: Is there
- 12:05a painting for this?
- 12:05KARA: It is. I want you to Google
- 12:07it. It's called Game On by Jack Vettriano from
- 12:122006.
- 12:12DANI: Oh, oh, oh.
- 12:12KARA: I think it's a great choice.
- 12:16DANI: Yeah, it totally is.
- 12:16KARA: Would you like to explain
- 12:19to the audience?
- 12:19DANI: It is a couple.
- 12:19KARA: It's quite erotic.
- 12:24DANI: It's quite, yeah. I wasn't expecting that. I
- 12:27don't know why.
- 12:27KARA: I know, me too. I was like, oh!
- 12:28DANI: A woman is pressed up against a wall and a man
- 12:33in like, a not full suit anymore. She's also wearing
- 12:36like, what do you call those?
- 12:36KARA: Thigh highs?
- 12:36DANI: Like
- 12:38thigh high, like kind of lingerie, like tights,
- 12:42pantyhose, I guess.
- 12:42KARA: Yeah.
- 12:42DANI: Like the strappy kind.
- 12:45And then he's wearing a full suit and they are
- 12:48kissing and his hand is between her legs.
- 12:51KARA: And
- 12:51his other hand is holding her arms back. It's
- 12:54steamy.
- 12:54DANI: And they're in like the decor is giving
- 12:57hotel.
- 12:57KARA: So when I saw that, I was like, well,
- 13:00that tracks.
- 13:00DANI: That tracks.
- 13:00KARA: And also the name of it
- 13:04it is perfect because of the tournament.
- 13:04DANI: That's
- 13:07why I was like, certainly they just picked it
- 13:09assuming like, yeah, there's a painting.
- 13:09KARA: But
- 13:11no, once I looked up the painting, I was like,
- 13:14wow, that's perfect.
- 13:14DANI: Okay.
- 13:14KARA: Alright. Now we
- 13:17start off with Carlton. Everyone is in the locker
- 13:19room, including the men.
- 13:19DANI: Yeah.
- 13:19KARA: They have an interpreter
- 13:22now.
- 13:22DANI: They have an interpreter now. I wish we
- 13:24had seen that scene of them being like, John,
- 13:27we got to cut the crap.
- 13:27KARA: We can't have you- we
- 13:31can't have Melody be doing this. Everyone is
- 13:33in the locker room, including the men. They have
- 13:35an interpreter. It's John, Melody, the interpreter
- 13:38who we don't know, and then the team. And Carlton
- 13:41has lost the playoffs.
- 13:41DANI: They have, and that's
- 13:44really sad. I just want to make a note. I don't
- 13:46know what background actors they were using
- 13:48in this scene. I don't know if they were pulling-
- 13:50I know sometimes they pull actual Deaf actors.
- 13:54That didn't feel like what was happening here.
- 13:56Maybe it was, but everyone in the locker room
- 13:59on the team looks 45 years old.
- 13:59KARA: I write later,
- 14:02everyone is white on both teams.
- 14:02DANI: Yeah. That's
- 14:05like, well Buckner it's like, yeah.
- 14:05Sure.
- 14:05DANI: But
- 14:08why are they 45?
- 14:08KARA: Great question.
- 14:08DANI: Anyway, I just
- 14:13it was really distracting when he's all sad.
- 14:15And I was like, that's a woman. That's a grown
- 14:17woman.
- 14:17KARA: That's a grown woman. Now Emmett is outside
- 14:21of Carlton and Bay approaches with the big booby
- 14:24comic book that she got last episode.
- 14:24DANI: Yeah. She's
- 14:27like, I didn't know if you wanted this back.
- 14:29He gave you that as a gift. But things are just
- 14:32tense between them. And so she's using it as
- 14:34an excuse.
- 14:34KARA: Also, I think she thought he got it
- 14:37for himself because he liked it. So I think she
- 14:39was like, maybe you want this back to read? And
- 14:41he was like, nah, I'm good.
- 14:41DANI: Maybe you want this
- 14:44back to look at the big booby monster hunter
- 14:46girl.
- 14:46KARA: Yeah. And then she's like, by the way,
- 14:48I told Ty that we're dating. Also, your birthday
- 14:51is coming up. What do you want for your birthday?
- 14:53Are you excited? And he's like, eh, I just want
- 14:56to be with you. I'm stuck in my parents' custody
- 14:58battle.
- 14:58DANI: Literally, does he want to be with her?
- 15:01KARA: Literally.
- 15:01DANI: It doesn't seem like it. But yeah,
- 15:04he's in his parents' custody battle and they're
- 15:06letting him choose who he wants to go with.
- 15:09KARA: And he wants to live with his dad.
- 15:09DANI: Yeah.
- 15:09KARA: Which
- 15:12is interesting because he was miserable living
- 15:15with his father.
- 15:15DANI: Weird of him.
- 15:15KARA: It just doesn't...
- 15:18They just don't really show any evidence of,
- 15:21like, he and Cameron's relationship, aside from
- 15:23Cameron being, like, very chill about everything.
- 15:26DANI: He's literally just mad about the motorcycle.
- 15:28Like, he doesn't actually want to be with his
- 15:30dad. He just wants to punish his mom.
- 15:30KARA: This man
- 15:32can hold a grudge.
- 15:32DANI: Which is, those were consequences
- 15:35to your own actions.
- 15:35KARA: Yeah, and whose fault is
- 15:38that, Emmett?
- 15:38DANI: Anyway, yeah, so he's like, blah,
- 15:41blah, blah, I'm gonna choose my dad. And then
- 15:43Bay's like, what? And then, cut to Daphne's
- 15:47at home at the Kennish house. And John's like,
- 15:51by the way, that team that we lost to, they got
- 15:54caught with alcohol. So now we are going to the,
- 15:58is it the playoffs or like the final?
- 15:58KARA: I think
- 16:00the finals now.
- 16:00DANI: The finals. So we are going to
- 16:02play in the finals now.
- 16:02KARA: Against.
- 16:02DANI: Against. Duh duh duh. Buckner.
- 16:07KARA: Crazy.
- 16:07DANI: And everyone's like, yay. And Daphne's
- 16:10like, no one's worried that this is going to
- 16:11be weird for me?
- 16:11KARA: That's true.
- 16:11DANI: No one says anything
- 16:14to her about it.
- 16:14KARA: No, that does not come up at
- 16:17all this episode.
- 16:17DANI: No. Well, it does on the court.
- 16:20Anyway, yay, basketball saved.
- 16:20KARA: They drank after
- 16:24they won the game.
- 16:24DANI: Yeah.
- 16:24KARA: Do you think they...
- 16:27I think I was like, okay, you had champagne after
- 16:30the game.
- 16:30DANI: No, I think it's stupid. It's like
- 16:32just the rules of the...
- 16:32KARA: Yeah, that's true.
- 16:32DANI: Whatever.
- 16:35And then Bay is, for some reason, still at Carlton,
- 16:39like cut back to Bay. She's still chilling at
- 16:42Carlton. It's a school day. Like, what is she...
- 16:44Anyway, Melody shows up. She looks like she's
- 16:48just gotten out of her car.
- 16:48KARA: Yes, I think she
- 16:51did. So maybe it's morning.
- 16:51DANI: It must be morning.
- 16:53But like, Bay's like, oh, hey, like Emmett just
- 16:56went inside. And Melody's like, no worries. I'm
- 16:59here to see you. Doesn't she? She works there.
- 17:02KARA: Right.
- 17:02DANI: She's here for work. Anyway, I do love
- 17:05that she was like, you know where Bay is?
- 17:07She's at Carlton with my son.
- 17:10So she's like, hey, girl. Also, there's no captions
- 17:13at the start, which I think is really great.
- 17:16KARA: I agree.
- 17:16DANI: Melody's essentially like, I need your
- 17:19help with the custody situation. And Bay's like,
- 17:22what? And she finally voices custody because
- 17:25she didn't know the sign.
- 17:25KARA: This is just care.
- 17:28DANI: Yeah. But like, yeah, that makes sense.
- 17:28KARA: Custody,
- 17:31like care back and forth.
- 17:31DANI: Yeah, that tracks. And
- 17:34then they're like, okay, now captions. And she's
- 17:37like, I need you to make a statement saying,
- 17:39like, basically the court will only let him choose
- 17:42if they think both places are a safe place for
- 17:44him to be. So I need you to make a statement
- 17:47saying that Cameron's is not safe, which you
- 17:50know it's not because you came to me in the start.
- 17:53This is so much to put on Bay.
- 17:53KARA: I think this is
- 17:56not cool to ask of Bay. And even later, Regina
- 17:59and Kathryn are like, we're the adults. Why
- 18:02don't you talk to us first?
- 18:02DANI: Yeah. And I feel
- 18:05like Regina could make a statement. Couldn't
- 18:08she say, like, I've heard from Bay? Like, why
- 18:11does it have to come from Bay?
- 18:11KARA: Why does it have
- 18:13to come from a 16-year-old?
- 18:13DANI: Yeah. I really
- 18:16feel for Bay. I mean, I feel for Melody, too,
- 18:18that, like, this is a tough situation. But, yeah,
- 18:21I personally would not have done that.
- 18:21KARA: Not at
- 18:24all.
- 18:24DANI: Especially because of the relationship her
- 18:26and Bay have had, mostly due to her up until
- 18:29this point. Like, she's kind of made it.
- 18:29KARA: And
- 18:32she's making it worse.
- 18:32DANI: Yeah, she's making it
- 18:34worse for sure.
- 18:34KARA: This is so much pressure for
- 18:36poor Bay.
- 18:36DANI: Yeah.
- 18:36KARA: Yeah, the two girls, so much
- 18:39pressure on them. They're doing their best this
- 18:41entire episode.
- 18:41DANI: I know. You know who I think
- 18:44is not doing her best?
- 18:44KARA: Regina?
- 18:44DANI: Regina. Why is she
- 18:47still dating this guy?
- 18:47KARA: I don't know. They're eating
- 18:50ice cream in the car and he leans in for a kiss
- 18:53but she's not into it.
- 18:53DANI: No, and then he's like okay
- 18:55I've done everything to express interest in you.
- 18:58What do I need to do or like what's up? And she
- 19:01says to him, my ex, whatever he was, just like popped
- 19:06back up a couple months ago again. Okay if a grown
- 19:10person said to me, my ex, whatever.
- 19:10KARA: I'm getting
- 19:14out of the car.
- 19:14DANI: What a red flag. Don't be like,
- 19:17this guy, my situationship.
- 19:17KARA: But then he kisses
- 19:21her anyway.
- 19:21DANI: Yeah.
- 19:21KARA: After she rejected him.
- 19:21DANI: She's
- 19:24like, I'm just not ready. And he's like, I'll
- 19:26see about that. And then he throws her ice cream
- 19:30cone.
- 19:30KARA: Perfectly good ice cream.
- 19:30DANI: Out of the car.
- 19:33And he does pause to be like, I'm really hoping
- 19:36you think that's romantic. And she does.
- 19:36KARA: That
- 19:39is such an ick to me. Littering?
- 19:39DANI: Can you imagine?
- 19:42KARA: I'd be like, I wasn't finished with that, bitch.
- 19:45DANI: That's so- also, it is littering.
- 19:45KARA: It is.
- 19:45DANI: What
- 19:48a waste. Don't be wasteful.
- 19:48KARA: That ice cream was
- 19:51not finished. They had plenty more to go and
- 19:53they didn't even eat the cone yet. It was really
- 19:55upsetting.
- 19:55DANI: Yeah. So he's annoying. And then.
- 19:59KARA: We're at the Kennish house.
- 19:59DANI: Yeah. And Craig Tebbe
- 20:02has a friend who's an editor, I guess.
- 20:02KARA: Yeah.
- 20:04He mentioned this like an episode or two ago.
- 20:06DANI: I think he mentioned this in his, like, interview
- 20:08to be their lawyer.
- 20:08KARA: Yeah. He knows someone who's
- 20:11a publisher. And he's like, great. By the way,
- 20:13the publisher wants to meet with Kathryn. Obviously,
- 20:16it's the same day as Daphne's tournament because
- 20:18conflict has to be there.
- 20:18DANI: Yeah.
- 20:18KARA: But John is like
- 20:21okay, talk to her and then come to the tournament.
- 20:24DANI: Yeah. Kathryn's really like, I can skip it.
- 20:26I don't need to talk. But yeah. Anyway, so she's
- 20:30going to meet with this editor. I don't really.
- 20:32KARA: I did not care about this plot.
- 20:32DANI: I did not care
- 20:34about Kathryn in this episode. Sorry, girl.
- 20:35KARA: I did not care about Regina and Kathryn in
- 20:37this episode.
- 20:37DANI: No. And then at Carlton, Daphne's
- 20:40walking around and there's like signs up everywhere.
- 20:44Everyone's like, good luck at the game.
- 20:44KARA: They're
- 20:46going to Springfield.
- 20:46DANI: They're going to Springfield.
- 20:48And then one of the people that says good luck
- 20:51at the game is Principal Rose. Why is this hearing
- 20:55bitch always shouting. Do you think that that
- 20:59was the actor's choice because they don't understand?
- 21:02Or do you think they were like, it is a good
- 21:04character choice?
- 21:04KARA: I don't know. Because she's
- 21:07like, good luck.
- 21:07DANI: Yeah, she's literally so loud
- 21:11right next to Daphne. Good luck at the game,
- 21:14Daphne.
- 21:14KARA: Maybe the actor just really projects.
- 21:18DANI: It's hard to watch.
- 21:18KARA: It's tough.
- 21:18DANI: It feels offensive.
- 21:22KARA: But Daphne's like, this is so much pressure.
- 21:24DANI: Yeah.
- 21:24KARA: I am- I do not need this right now. But
- 21:27Emmett's there. And he's like, I can help. You're
- 21:30probably going to lose. This is kind of funny.
- 21:32Yeah. Buckner's better.
- 21:32DANI: Yeah. He's like, you're
- 21:35probably going to lose. And everyone's going
- 21:36to be really disappointed. And ultimately, it's
- 21:38not going to matter.
- 21:38KARA: And you have a crap shoot
- 21:40and bad taste in music.
- 21:40DANI: Yeah. And then. Just
- 21:43some best friend stuff.
- 21:43KARA: This is, I think, where
- 21:45you asked me about the signing.
- 21:45DANI: Yes. I felt like
- 21:48the captions in this conversation did not match
- 21:51the signing I was seeing.
- 21:51KARA: Yeah, so she basically
- 21:54asked Emmett to come to the game and she's like,
- 21:56you gotta go, I'm there. But the captions say,
- 21:59I could really use someone in the stand whose
- 22:02self-esteem isn't tied to me sinking in a basket
- 22:04at the right time. What do you think she actually
- 22:06signed? I want to hear your interpretation.
- 22:06DANI: What
- 22:09I caught was like, I need someone in the stands.
- 22:13Like, I need you sitting up there because you're
- 22:15my friend.
- 22:15KARA: Yeah.
- 22:15DANI: That's what I saw.
- 22:15KARA: Yeah, that's
- 22:18pretty much what she says. I wrote the ASL gloss.
- 22:20So it says, I really need you there. They all
- 22:23worry my basketball, but you and I best friends
- 22:26long time, which is just a transcription, guys.
- 22:28It's not the translation. So I guess it's, I
- 22:32need you there because everyone else worries
- 22:34about my basketball skills, but you would be
- 22:36there just as my friend.
- 22:36DANI: Yeah.
- 22:36KARA: But that's way
- 22:39different from what the caption said.
- 22:39DANI: Yeah, it's
- 22:41very, like...the self-esteem part, it just felt
- 22:44very flowery in a way where I'm like, the core
- 22:47of what she was saying to me was like, they're
- 22:50all going to be there for the basketball and
- 22:52I need you to be there for me because you're
- 22:54my friend.
- 22:54KARA: Right. Which the caption should have
- 22:56said. That was probably the biggest difference
- 22:59between the captions and the signing that I've seen
- 23:01so far. And then I wrote another way that they
- 23:04could translate it correctly, which would be
- 23:07like, you there, I want like self-esteem depend
- 23:11on me basketball success. But if I miss shot,
- 23:14you disappointed? No.
- 23:14DANI: Yeah, that would have been
- 23:17more- I would have been like, that's what the
- 23:18captions say.
- 23:18KARA: Yeah. And that's true ASL.
- 23:18DANI: So yeah,
- 23:23interesting. I wonder what happened there.
- 23:23KARA: Now,
- 23:26Regina, Kathryn and Melody are together in
- 23:29the kitchen. It seems like Melody told Regina
- 23:32about the testifying situation.
- 23:32DANI: Yeah.
- 23:32KARA: And then
- 23:34she dragged her right to Kathryn. Thank God.
- 23:38DANI: Good for Regina for once.
- 23:38KARA: For once.
- 23:38DANI: Good choice.
- 23:41KARA: Melody's explaining the custody situation to
- 23:43the two of them. And Regina and Kathryn are
- 23:46both playing mama bear. And they're like, this
- 23:48is not appropriate. You should have come straight
- 23:50to us instead of ambushing Bay with this. But
- 23:53you can see Kathryn, like, the wheels are turning
- 23:56in her head. She's, like, empathizing with Melody.
- 23:59Like, oh, okay. Okay.
- 23:59DANI: It's a bad situation in
- 24:02the house. It's just like there's no good solution
- 24:05here beyond Melody and Cameron fucking like talking
- 24:09to each other.
- 24:09KARA: Literally.
- 24:09DANI: Things are so volatile
- 24:11between them. I wish we like understood why.
- 24:11KARA: Yeah
- 24:15I- I mean it seems like Cameron is having like
- 24:18a weird midlife crisis but like there's gotta
- 24:20be more to why they broke up. Did he cheat on
- 24:23her with Olivia, like?
- 24:23DANI: Right. Don't know Don't know.
- 24:27KARA: Bay arrives home and she's not being receptive
- 24:29to Kathryn's questions about the custody thing.
- 24:32DANI: No, she just says, I've got it under control.
- 24:35I don't need anyone's help. And then she goes
- 24:37straight to Daphne.
- 24:37KARA: Which I thought was sweet.
- 24:39DANI: Aw, sisterhood.
- 24:39KARA: And then Daphne rightfully says,
- 24:42wow, you can't win. Simcom but awesome. Daphne
- 24:46says, I don't know what you could really do,
- 24:49but I would say don't force it. Like, I do think
- 24:52Emmett should be living with Melody, but you
- 24:54shouldn't force the situation. Just, like, gently
- 24:56push him in the right direction.
- 24:56DANI: Yeah. And then
- 24:59she says, I'll try to push him a little too.
- 25:01KARA: Yeah.
- 25:01DANI: Which she does not get a chance to do in
- 25:03this episode.
- 25:03KARA: No, not at all. Well, she's too
- 25:06busy with the basketball.
- 25:06DANI: She's got a lot going
- 25:08on.
- 25:08KARA: And then she's talking about the tournament
- 25:10and Bay's like, oh, yeah, congrats about that.
- 25:12By the way, I can't make it. I have class or
- 25:14something.
- 25:14DANI: They worked really overtime in the
- 25:17script to make sure that it was understood why
- 25:20some of the actors weren't going to be at the
- 25:22basketball tournament.
- 25:22KARA: Why Toby and Bay were
- 25:23not going to be there.
- 25:23DANI: Which was, I guess, for
- 25:27the plot.
- 25:27KARA: What's going to happen later.
- 25:27DANI: Yeah.
- 25:29KARA: Which makes sense. But they had to make it very
- 25:32explicit. Like Bay said, my English teacher's
- 25:34being such a bitch. I can't go.
- 25:34DANI: Yeah.
- 25:34KARA: So she
- 25:37won't be at the basketball tournament.
- 25:37DANI: She actually
- 25:39says bitch, too, which I thought was crazy for
- 25:41Freeform.
- 25:41KARA: I know, and she signs it.
- 25:41DANI: Yeah.
- 25:41KARA: That
- 25:44was awesome.
- 25:44DANI: She goes, bitch. Yeah. Yeah, and
- 25:48then at Buckner, Toby's in the library, and
- 25:51Simone finds him there. I'd just love these two
- 25:54to hang out anywhere else.
- 25:54KARA: They love the library.
- 25:57DANI: They were like, we built a set for the library,
- 25:59guys. We gotta use it.
- 25:59KARA: We have to use it.
- 25:59DANI: But
- 26:01he's got headphones in. And she tugs one of his
- 26:06earbuds out of his ear as she comes by.
- 26:06KARA: No, girl.
- 26:10DANI: I would be livid.
- 26:10KARA: Yeah.
- 26:10DANI: And she's there to, like,
- 26:13beg for forgiveness. And that's how she starts.
- 26:16KARA: What did she say?
- 26:16DANI: She's there to beg for forgiveness,
- 26:18again.
- 26:18KARA: She says I'm sorry, again. Also come to my
- 26:21game.
- 26:21DANI: No, she's like what if you told your teacher
- 26:24that you are developing the chicken pox and so
- 26:27you can't go?
- 26:27KARA: And Toby goes well I'm vaccinated
- 26:30like a normal person.
- 26:30DANI: Yeah.
- 26:30KARA: So I'm not gonna get
- 26:33it actually.
- 26:33DANI: Simone anti-vax.
- 26:33KARA: And Simone goes
- 26:37well, I'm anti-vax. None of this happened. But
- 26:39she's like come to my game. I have a hotel room
- 26:42all to myself. Again, Buckner has money.
- 26:42DANI: The exposition
- 26:45here. They're really laying a trap.
- 26:45KARA: And she's
- 26:48like, what if you just lied and came. And he's
- 26:50like, no.
- 26:50DANI: Simone's always like, what if we just
- 26:53lied?
- 26:53KARA: Yeah. Same with last episode where he was
- 26:56like, I have the kegger party with Guitar Face.
- 26:59And she was like, just ditch it.
- 26:59DANI: Yeah. Just tell
- 27:01Wilke.
- 27:01KARA: Do what I want you to do.
- 27:01DANI: Yeah.
- 27:01KARA: Do what I want
- 27:04you to do, actually.
- 27:04DANI: And he's like, kind of considering
- 27:06it. He's like, maybe, we'll see. Toby!
- 27:06KARA: Toby! If
- 27:10he had one conversation with his sisters.
- 27:10DANI: I get
- 27:13that Maiara Walsh is, like, beautiful.
- 27:13KARA: She's
- 27:16gorgeous. But she's a sociopath.
- 27:16DANI: But Simone is
- 27:19a sociopath.
- 27:19KARA: Yes.
- 27:19DANI: Toby, you cannot possibly want
- 27:23to get laid that bad.
- 27:23KARA: I just think you need to
- 27:25have one conversation with Bay and or Daphne
- 27:27to realize that she is insane.
- 27:27DANI: Yeah.
- 27:27KARA: And then
- 27:31just, I don't know.
- 27:31DANI: So then, yeah, I guess Toby
- 27:33was at school early because then back at the
- 27:36guest house, Patrick like calls Regina and he's
- 27:39like, by the way, I'm around the corner and I
- 27:42want to come bring you bagels. And Daphne's still
- 27:44there.
- 27:44KARA: Yeah. He just pops up.
- 27:44DANI: Yeah. He's like
- 27:48really into Regina.
- 27:48KARA: Yeah. Also not cool though.
- 27:52He knows she has a child and that's like something
- 27:54you talk about separately.
- 27:54DANI: But you know who is
- 27:56cool with it is Daphne.
- 27:56KARA: Yeah. Daphne's like,
- 27:59great. I love bagels. I love lox.
- 27:59DANI: Yeah. He brings
- 28:01over like a bunch of stuff. And she's like, this
- 28:05is awesome. He seems great. Like, have fun, you
- 28:08two. And she leaves.
- 28:08KARA: Also, she hates Angelo.
- 28:11So she's like, great. Mom's getting over him.
- 28:13DANI: True. Yeah. And Regina's like, you can't just
- 28:16show up here with bagels.
- 28:16KARA: And meet my kids.
- 28:16DANI: And
- 28:19I will say, like, Patrick's very, like, because
- 28:22he's obsessed with her, he just, like, pivots.
- 28:24So he's like, oh, OK. Like, so I won't come by
- 28:26with dinner later? And she just, like, finds
- 28:28that so cute. And then they kiss again.
- 28:28KARA: I know.
- 28:31Regina finds weird things cute. She's like literally,
- 28:34dancing to a first dance at a wedding. My favorite.
- 28:38DANI: Yeah. So I don't know, but he's, he's icky to
- 28:41me. Like something's shady about him.
- 28:41KARA: Yeah. I
- 28:44don't know. I don't remember what happens with
- 28:46them.
- 28:46DANI: Also, when was the last time we saw Adrianna?
- 28:50KARA: Right. Didn't she move back in?
- 28:50DANI: I thought she
- 28:52moved back in, but we have not been seeing her.
- 28:54What does she think of Patrick?
- 28:54KARA: She's probably
- 28:56busy with Jane the Virgin. When did Jane the
- 28:58Virgin come out? Give me a second.
- 28:58DANI: I was really
- 29:00obsessed with that show.
- 29:00KARA: Great show.
- 29:00DANI: Great show.
- 29:03So unfortunate that literally everyone involved
- 29:05with it is so cursed now. It's like Glee.
- 29:05KARA: I know.
- 29:08Jane the Virgin came out in 2014, so maybe not
- 29:11yet then.
- 29:11DANI: I guess they just didn't have anything
- 29:13for her character to do.
- 29:13KARA: I guess not.
- 29:13DANI: But you'd
- 29:15think that she'd be there to support Daphne's
- 29:18game and such.
- 29:18KARA: Or meet Patrick. Well, she's met
- 29:21Patrick.
- 29:21DANI: She's met Patrick. But just in general.
- 29:24I don't know. Maybe Adrianna would have liked
- 29:26a bagel.
- 29:26KARA: Yeah.
- 29:26DANI: She would have enjoyed a little
- 29:28lox. Anyway.
- 29:28KARA: Now we are at Cameron's and Bay
- 29:32is telling Emmett about the testifying situation
- 29:35and how Melody asked her to make a statement.
- 29:38And he's like, Bay, stay out of it.
- 29:38DANI: Yeah, he's
- 29:41very clear. This is so tough for her. I understand.
- 29:45KARA: But she's like, well. It's not like I'm doing
- 29:47this on purpose. People are putting me in these
- 29:49tough situations.
- 29:49DANI: Yeah, he says, stop getting
- 29:50in the middle. And she said, everyone's putting
- 29:53me there.
- 29:53KARA: Putting me there against my will.
- 29:55DANI: Yeah. This is so hard, though. Because, like,
- 29:58I totally understand from Emmett's point of view.
- 30:00Like, you are my girlfriend. Stay out of my parents'
- 30:03business. Like, this is a mess.
- 30:03KARA: He says something
- 30:06like, this custody battle is like a war, but
- 30:10you are, like, my safe island.
- 30:10DANI: Yeah, he keeps
- 30:13saying that, but I don't feel like he actually
- 30:14feels that way about Bay. She's been involved
- 30:17since the start, like he basically moved out because
- 30:19of Bay.
- 30:19KARA:
- 30:19In some ways.
- 30:19DANI: Because of her, but it's not
- 30:22her fault.
- 30:22KARA: Right.
- 30:22DANI: I feel for him.
- 30:22KARA: Yeah, you're right.
- 30:25Regina is at the guest house and she gets a call
- 30:28from Patrick and he's like by the way there's
- 30:30a museum opening in Arkansas tomorrow night. And
- 30:33Regina's like, so sorry, I have Daphne's basketball
- 30:36game. And Patrick has this look on his face as
- 30:39if he's never been rejected before. Now we're
- 30:42back at the Kennish house.
- 30:42DANI: Yeah.
- 30:42KARA: And Toby is
- 30:44playing video games when Bay approaches for advice
- 30:47about Emmett's birthday gift. And she's like,
- 30:50I think I want to get a motorcycle fender and
- 30:53paint something really cool on it. And then what
- 30:55was the second choice?
- 30:55DANI: Or a book.
- 30:55KARA: Or a book.
- 30:57And then cut to the next scene.
- 30:57DANI: Yeah, she basically
- 31:00goes, Toby, I need your help getting this birthday
- 31:03gift for Emmett. Come with me. I don't know why
- 31:06she needs him for this.
- 31:06KARA: But I also don't know
- 31:08why he- how he knows about motorcycles all of
- 31:10a sudden.
- 31:10DANI: I guess she's just like you're a boy.
- 31:12KARA: Yeah.
- 31:12DANI: I don't know. I feel like Daphne would have
- 31:15been a better choice honestly.
- 31:15KARA: But it's very nice
- 31:18if Toby helps since I haven't seen the two of
- 31:20them together in many episodes.
- 31:20DANI: Yeah maybe the
- 31:22writers were just like give 'em a scene. So they
- 31:24go to Cameron's place, to the garage, to check
- 31:28on the new motorcycle that I guess Emmett and
- 31:31his dad have been building together.
- 31:31KARA: And basically
- 31:34they're there because they need to look at the
- 31:36measurements and like the wheel size to figure
- 31:38out what size fender to get.
- 31:38DANI: To find a good fender.
- 31:40And Olivia lets them in and she takes the opportunity
- 31:45to make a blowjob comment for some reason in
- 31:49front of two teenagers.
- 31:49KARA: To talk about her high school
- 31:53sex life to high schoolers. It's just weird.
- 31:56DANI: It's so weird that she does that. It's so inappropriate.
- 31:58Like, obviously, that's the point, is that it's
- 32:00inappropriate. But even watching it, knowing
- 32:02that that's why they wrote it in, I'm like, I
- 32:04still feel uncomfortable.
- 32:04KARA: That's crazy.
- 32:04DANI: She's
- 32:06like, that's such a cool gift that you're giving
- 32:07him. The only thing I got my high school boyfriend
- 32:10lasted, like, five minutes.
- 32:10KARA: And Toby and Bay
- 32:13are like, oh, okay.
- 32:13DANI: And then she gets a call.
- 32:17KARA: So she leaves the garage.
- 32:17DANI: She's like, I think
- 32:19there's, like, a measuring tape over there somewhere.
- 32:21Which, why didn't they bring one? That's why
- 32:24they were truly here. I thought they were here
- 32:25to snoop, but they're not.
- 32:25KARA: I think Toby was originally
- 32:28looking at the tire or the rim for numbers, and
- 32:32he was like, that's weird. The numbers are rubbed
- 32:34off. Let me just get a tape measure. So he starts
- 32:36opening drawers, and then all of a sudden he
- 32:39opens one drawer, and it's filled with weed.
- 32:42DANI: Individual baggies.
- 32:42KARA: Individual baggies of weed.
- 32:45DANI: A dime bag.
- 32:45KARA: A what bag?
- 32:45DANI: A dime bag.
- 32:45KARA: A dime bag,
- 32:48yes.
- 32:48DANI: Isn't that what that is?
- 32:48KARA: You're asking the
- 32:50wrong person, but probably.
- 32:50DANI: He opens the drawer
- 32:52and it's literally full of dime bags.
- 32:52KARA: Olivia
- 32:55then walks in and immediately lies and says,
- 32:58that's not mine. I'm holding it for a friend.
- 32:59DANI: I'm holding it for a friend. Please don't tell
- 33:01Melody.
- 33:01KARA: Please.
- 33:01DANI: Yeah. Like, just very explicitly.
- 33:06She's like, don't tell Melody. It'll kill Cameron
- 33:08if he loses Emmett.
- 33:08KARA: She knows she's fucked.
- 33:08DANI: Yeah.
- 33:11So.
- 33:11KARA: Also, extremely dangerous and ignorant of
- 33:16Olivia to be involved in something like this
- 33:18when Emmett was recently arrested and faced
- 33:21police brutality and Deaf people in general are
- 33:23just more likely to face police brutality and
- 33:26police misconduct.
- 33:26DANI: And also, like, she's living
- 33:29in her boyfriend's home. Like, clearly she's
- 33:31just moved into this home as well, with his teenage
- 33:35son.
- 33:35KARA: It's one thing to smoke, but it's another
- 33:37thing to sell. And that looks like a lot.
- 33:37DANI: It
- 33:41does look like a lot. So, especially not in
- 33:45Missouri.
- 33:45KARA: Yeah, it's definitely not legal there.
- 33:47Yeah. So I was just like, oh, man. Okay. Now
- 33:51in Springfield.
- 33:51DANI: Springfield. New location, mama.
- 33:54KARA: It's a hotel lobby. John and Daphne are checking
- 33:57into the hotel and a Deaf mom and daughter approach.
- 34:01And they're like, oh, my God, we're so excited
- 34:03for the game. We drove 11 hours from Indiana
- 34:07just to see this game.
- 34:07DANI: Crazy.
- 34:07KARA: And then Daphne
- 34:11decides to simcom to this little girl.
- 34:11DANI: Yeah.
- 34:13Who also, that little girl did not want to clock
- 34:16into work that day. The way that she is-
- 34:16KARA: This
- 34:19actor, I know.
- 34:19DANI: The way that this eight-year
- 34:21-old is just dead-faced, staring at her, doesn't
- 34:24sign anything back, doesn't say anything back.
- 34:27KARA: Not excited at all to be there.
- 34:27DANI: Not excited at
- 34:29all. Doesn't seem to comprehend what Daphne's
- 34:31saying. Tough.
- 34:31KARA: Yeah.
- 34:31DANI: I was like, why? This was
- 34:35part of my dream. I'm saying this contributed
- 34:37because I was like watching Daphne communicate
- 34:39with this child and I'm like, go girl, give us
- 34:42nothing.
- 34:42KARA: She's in awe because Daphne decided
- 34:45to simcom to her.
- 34:45DANI: She's shocked.
- 34:45KARA: She's like,
- 34:48I came all this way for this Deaf star player
- 34:51to simcom to me?
- 34:51DANI: Maybe. Maybe she was making
- 34:53a character choice. You're right.
- 34:53KARA: Maybe. And
- 34:56then the mom is like, by the way, I met another
- 34:58family and they came all the way from Houston,
- 35:00Texas.
- 35:00DANI: Crazy.
- 35:00KARA: So Daphne's like holy shit, that
- 35:04is a lot on my shoulders. So I do see the tournament
- 35:08as being like a symbol of being so much more
- 35:11than a game which Daphne does say later. It's
- 35:14now- it's about equality for Deaf people and representation
- 35:17especially for Deaf schools which are being closed
- 35:20very fast.
- 35:20DANI: Yeah.
- 35:20KARA: And that's true. The Deaf community
- 35:24is like the size of a pea, so if there is a game
- 35:26like that, people do come from far and wide.
- 35:26DANI: Especially
- 35:29because like not only are they just generally
- 35:32the underdogs, but like they're the underdogs
- 35:34up against a rich, privileged private school.
- 35:37KARA: Like it's a great-
- 35:37DANI: It's a perfect storm of like,
- 35:41wow, what an amazing story.
- 35:41KARA: And then also Daphne
- 35:44does have the threat of the team being cut.
- 35:44DANI: Yes.
- 35:46KARA: So it's not just winning or losing the game.
- 35:49It's also like, if I lose, this team is going
- 35:52to be cut.
- 35:52DANI: Yeah. And all these people who came
- 35:55out to support will be like disappointed.
- 35:55KARA: Right.
- 35:57Yeah. Emmett arrives at the hotel now and he
- 36:00sees Melody because Melody is coaching, obviously.
- 36:02DANI: Yeah. And he goes off on her immediately. Well,
- 36:05Melody's so excited to see him.
- 36:05DANI: Yeah.
- 36:05KARA: She was
- 36:07like, oh my God. I can get a suite for us and
- 36:09we can like order in. And he's like, no, I'm
- 36:13sharing a room with my friends unless you want
- 36:16to go behind my back again and tell my girlfriend
- 36:18about our sleeping arrangements. And Melody's
- 36:20like, okay. And then he goes -
- 36:20DANI: Poor Melody.
- 36:20KARA: I
- 36:22know.
- 36:22DANI: She kind of can't win here.
- 36:22KARA: No. He's like,
- 36:25well, dad and I are finally getting close. You
- 36:28complained for years that he didn't make an effort
- 36:30to be a dad. Now we're finally getting close.
- 36:33And you just want to take that away. And then
- 36:35Melody says Cameron has gotten a little off the
- 36:38rails.
- 36:38DANI: And it's true.
- 36:38KARA: And it's true. And then
- 36:40Emmett's like-
- 36:40DANI: I think she's being polite. I think
- 36:42he's gone way off the rails.
- 36:42KARA: Way off the rails.
- 36:44And then Emmett's like, okay, whatever. And then
- 36:46he leaves. It's b-ball practice time. Carlton
- 36:49arrives and they see-
- 36:49DANI: So funny. I just skipped
- 36:51over that entirely in my notes. I was like, I
- 36:53don't care.
- 36:53KARA: Well, Carlton arrives and they see
- 36:55Buckner playing. And the coach is like, okay,
- 36:58Buckner, clean up. Also, massages are in 15 minutes.
- 37:02DANI: Ugh, I wish.
- 37:02KARA: But then one of the tournament guys
- 37:05approaches and he's like, I heard an anonymous
- 37:08tip that Daphne can't play because she hasn't
- 37:11been a consecutive Carlton player for the past
- 37:14six weeks. And I just know who fucking snitched,
- 37:17but...
- 37:17DANI: Well, we think we know.
- 37:17KARA: No, I know.
- 37:17DANI: Okay.
- 37:20KARA: But then the tournament guy, the Buckner coach,
- 37:23John, Melody, and Daphne are all sitting at this
- 37:25table. And then Melody gives like this impassioned
- 37:28speech about what Daphne and Carlton mean
- 37:31for the Deaf community.
- 37:31DANI: Yes.
- 37:31KARA: And it's going to
- 37:33look really shitty, honestly, if they do that.
- 37:35DANI: Of course. And it's important to note, as she's
- 37:38making this speech, she asks Daphne to interpret
- 37:40for her. And Daphne says this later, like, she
- 37:44feels like the mouthpiece for this community.
- 37:47Like the literal mouthpiece in a case where Melody
- 37:50is like, okay, Daphne, defend yourself via me,
- 37:53via you.
- 37:53KARA: Right.
- 37:53DANI: You know? So it's a tough position
- 37:56to be put in.
- 37:56KARA: Yeah, she's literally straddling
- 37:59the deaf and hearing world.
- 37:59DANI: Yeah.
- 37:59KARA: She does have
- 38:02a cool shirt on, though. I don't know if you
- 38:03noticed, but it was a light switch. And the top
- 38:05said ASL and the bottom said English. Which tracks,
- 38:09because that's literally what she was just doing.
- 38:10DANI: That is really on the nose. The costume department
- 38:13was like, we ate. We ate with that.
- 38:13KARA: Yeah.
- 38:13DANI: Kathryn
- 38:16is practicing her book pitch to her children
- 38:20who the book is about.
- 38:20KARA: Right.
- 38:20DANI: I was like, this
- 38:23is, I felt bad for the kids. They were trying
- 38:25to be supportive. And Toby was like, I lived
- 38:27it and I would still read it.
- 38:27KARA: Yeah.
- 38:27DANI: But.
- 38:27KARA: Bay
- 38:30is not paying attention.
- 38:30DANI: No, she's got other
- 38:33things on her mind. She doesn't really care.
- 38:35What words does Kathryn use? She's like, I
- 38:37looked at my daughter with her-
- 38:37KARA: With her proud
- 38:39ringlets and her fiery eyes or something.
- 38:39DANI: Yeah.
- 38:42And then she's like, Bay, are you okay with me
- 38:44saying proud ringlets and fiery eyes?
- 38:44KARA: And Bay's
- 38:46like, huh?
- 38:46DANI: Yeah. She's like, I don't care. If
- 38:48I were Bay, I would care. I don't know. I feel
- 38:50weird about it.
- 38:50KARA: I think it's a sweet line.
- 38:50DANI: It's
- 38:53a sweet line, but I just mean, like, I think
- 38:55I wouldn't want to not be involved at all.
- 38:55KARA: With
- 38:58the book?
- 38:58DANI: Yeah. Like, don't run your pitches
- 39:00past me. Don't consult me. Like, just do what
- 39:03you're going to do.
- 39:03KARA: But I think Kathryn's trying
- 39:05to be respectful.
- 39:05DANI: I know. I just think it's a
- 39:07tough position. Another tough position for Bay
- 39:10to be put in.
- 39:10KARA: Another tough position for Bay
- 39:11to be put in.
- 39:11DANI: And then John interrupts that.
- 39:13He calls Toby and interrupts the pitch.
- 39:13KARA: Well,
- 39:16he calls Kathryn, but then Toby picks it up
- 39:18because he notices Bay and Kathryn need to have
- 39:21a conversation. So he picks it up.
- 39:21DANI: Okay.
- 39:21KARA: So Bay
- 39:23and Kathryn have a conversation in one room,
- 39:25and then he and John talk on the phone in another.
- 39:27DANI: Well, John is basically- when Toby picks up,
- 39:29John's like, your girlfriend is a snitch, by
- 39:31the way. Like, that's the subtext. He doesn't
- 39:34know about Simone. But, like, immediately he's
- 39:37like, someone on the team tried to report Daphne.
- 39:41Someone has. And Toby's like, who would have
- 39:43done that? And John's like, someone with a pretty
- 39:46big grudge against Daphne, I guess. Laying it
- 39:49on a little thick.
- 39:49KARA: And the next room over, Bay is
- 39:51finally opening up to her mom about the custody
- 39:53battle. And she's like, you know, if I don't
- 39:56testify, Melody's going to hate me. If I do,
- 39:58Emmett's going to hate me. And there's just no
- 40:00winning. And Kathryn says, I'm sure whatever
- 40:03you decide, Emmett's going to understand. Which
- 40:06I don't think.
- 40:06DANI: I don't think that's true.
- 40:06KARA: I wrote,
- 40:08Emmett loves to hold a grudge.
- 40:08DANI: Emmett loves to
- 40:11hold a grudge. Also, he's a 16-year-old boy.
- 40:1216-year-old boys, famously not a compassionate
- 40:15people.
- 40:15KARA: But then Kathryn says, if you really
- 40:18care about him and he's in trouble, you need
- 40:20to say something no matter the cost.
- 40:20DANI: Yeah. God,
- 40:23this sucks for Bay.
- 40:23KARA: It sucks. Someone save her.
- 40:27ANI: Yeah. Meanwhile, Emmett is hanging out with Daphne.
- 40:30That man loves to put on a stupid hat. That's
- 40:33like his favorite thing.
- 40:33KARA: This is the weirdest
- 40:36gift shop ever.
- 40:36DANI: It's like, it's gotta be like
- 40:38props for the game, but they're like specifically
- 40:41unbranded props.
- 40:41KARA: There's a sock monkey? There are
- 40:45the hand clappers, which makes sense.
- 40:45DANI: Yeah. And,
- 40:47like, Emmett tosses on a pair of, like, novelty
- 40:51giant sunglasses and a cowboy hat?
- 40:51KARA: I guess. I
- 40:55just think this would have been a great opportunity
- 40:57for Carlton to sell some shirts and make some
- 40:59money for the school.
- 40:59DANI: Well, the marketing team
- 41:02for the school is not doing their job. No, Principal
- 41:05Rose. Get on that.
- 41:05KARA: Learn some signing. Better signing.
- 41:09DANI: Yeah, but Simone comes over and interrupts their
- 41:12little pal around to be like, oh my god, I'm so
- 41:16glad you're able to play. I'm so sorry that happened.
- 41:19KARA: And I didn't rat you out.
- 41:19DANI: Well, Daphne's like
- 41:22yeah, I bet you are and Simone's like well, it
- 41:24wasn't me. I kind of believe her because then
- 41:27she says to Daphne like, you know me you know
- 41:30it's only fun for me if it's competitive.
- 41:30KARA: It's
- 41:33what she says later that I think it's a lie, which
- 41:35I'll tell you about.
- 41:35DANI: Okay hmm. Yeah but she's
- 41:38like I miss you. Like, let's be friends. Let's
- 41:41hang out after all of this. And Daphne's like,
- 41:44I don't know, girl. And then Simone just, like,
- 41:46sadly walks away.
- 41:46KARA: Emmett watched this whole conversation.
- 41:48DANI: Yeah, and Emmett's like, you think she was for
- 41:50real? And Daphne's like, who could tell?
- 41:50KARA: Now,
- 41:53Bay is at Cameron's house talking to Cameron.
- 41:56DANI: Yeah, Bay's like, you know what I should do?
- 41:59I should just go straight to the source, the
- 42:00other source.
- 42:00KARA: Yeah.
- 42:00DANI: And it's clear. She clearly
- 42:04goes and is like, hey, your girlfriend's fucking
- 42:06selling weed.
- 42:06KARA: And he's like, shit, she still
- 42:09is?
- 42:09DANI: Yeah, like, he knew about it. He goes, I
- 42:11told Olivia it was that stuff or me. Okay, so
- 42:14you did know.
- 42:14KARA: Right. And then he's like, that's
- 42:17it. I'm going to ask Olivia to move out. And
- 42:19Bay's like, oh, my God, I'm getting myself deeper
- 42:21in this. Now I'm getting involved in, like, an
- 42:23extra relationship.
- 42:23DANI: Yeah, she was like, that's
- 42:25not what I want. And he was like, well, it's
- 42:27either that or let Melody win. And Bay's like,
- 42:30what the fuck is wrong with you? This is not
- 42:33about somebody winning or losing. She's so red
- 42:36-faced during this scene, too. She clearly is
- 42:39like, this is fucking hard for me. Cameron sucks.
- 42:43KARA: What I really did like about this scene, though,
- 42:45and also with her conversation with Melody prior,
- 42:48is that we really see Bay's massive improvement
- 42:51in signing. That she is able to have these really
- 42:53difficult conversations. When prior, she was
- 42:56like, ah, uh.
- 42:56DANI: No, she's put the work in.
- 42:56KARA: Even
- 43:00though she's simcomming to Cameron.
- 43:00DANI: Yeah. Well,
- 43:03her own mother is simcomming to her Deaf daughter.
- 43:07So, like, what hope was there for Bay?
- 43:07KARA: Exactly.
- 43:10Yeah, now we're home. And Kathryn is presenting
- 43:13the book proposal to the publisher. And the publisher's
- 43:17like, great proposal. I love you. But Sarah Lazar,
- 43:20the journalist, is writing a book about the
- 43:23switch too and there's a good chance that she's
- 43:25going to get her book out before you, so we need
- 43:28not just your story, but Regina's, because having
- 43:31both is more compelling and it's probably going
- 43:33to sell better.
- 43:33DANI: I feel like this is such an unrealistic
- 43:36plot point. I just think if there were two books,
- 43:39I don't know maybe we need to get on a consult
- 43:42about the publishing industry, but I feel if there
- 43:45was a celebrity memoir like by the celebrity
- 43:49and then a biography by like a random journalist
- 43:52that doesn't know them.
- 43:52KARA: Exactly.
- 43:52DANI: Like which one's
- 43:55gonna sell better? Obviously the fucking-
- 43:55KARA: The mom!
- 43:58DANI: Like yeah, like Kathryn's voice on her own should
- 44:00be enough. I understand why the writers are doing
- 44:03this for the plot, but I just like did not buy-
- 44:05not only that, but also you should not, if you're
- 44:09pitching a book, you should not internalize the
- 44:12advice from the first editor you talk to without
- 44:15shopping it around to other people. Because
- 44:19this editor says this, like, it's the definitive
- 44:22truth. Like, it's too big of a risk to publish
- 44:24your book without also having Regina as a co
- 44:28-writer.
- 44:28KARA: Yeah, it was strange. Like, yeah, she
- 44:31should be going to different publishers.
- 44:31DANI: Yeah,
- 44:33and, like, you're a well-connected person.
- 44:33KARA: Yeah,
- 44:36why did you have Craig Tebbe do this? You have the
- 44:39means to go find all these other people. Melody
- 44:42and Regina are at the hotel bar. Regina, thankfully,
- 44:44is not drinking. She's having, like, a little
- 44:46Perrier.
- 44:46DANI: Yeah, they're having a little bestie
- 44:48chat.
- 44:48KARA: And Melody asks about the gallery guy and
- 44:51Regina's like, I'm not feeling it. He's not a
- 44:53parent. He doesn't get it.
- 44:53DANI: Yeah, and then Melody's
- 44:56like, is it that or are you just still not
- 44:59over Angelo and Regina's like okay, you got me
- 45:03like obviously I'm still not over Angelo, like
- 45:06he always has this hold on me and Melody's like
- 45:09I miss being in love like that and Regina's like
- 45:12well, I don't want it. And I thought I thought
- 45:14the whole exchange was very Wuthering Heights,
- 45:16actually.
- 45:16KARA: I don't understand the reference but
- 45:18I believe it.
- 45:18DANI: She was just like, I'm suffering
- 45:20like for this love and I don't even want it.
- 45:20KARA: And
- 45:24Melody's like I want it.
- 45:24DANI: Melody's like I want
- 45:26it and then Melody says, okay, Melody says to
- 45:30Regina, well, I'll always be here for you.
- 45:30KARA: And
- 45:33I thought that was like.
- 45:33DANI: Wait, and then it cuts
- 45:36to the next scene is Simone, except we don't
- 45:41know that it's Simone. It's a shot of Simone
- 45:43in her hotel bed. So it's just a shot of legs
- 45:46like up in a bed. It looks like something sexual
- 45:51is about to happen in a hotel room with the lights
- 45:54off and we can't see who it is. And for a split
- 45:57second, I was like, oh my God, Regina and Melody.
- 46:01KARA: So when Melody was like, I'll always be here,
- 46:04I kind of thought like, well, if none of the
- 46:07other men work. I'm here.
- 46:07DANI: Yeah, that's also how
- 46:09I interpreted it. The editors are diabolical
- 46:13that the next shot is Simone in bed. And it's
- 46:16like a little sexual in a way where I was like,
- 46:18oh, but then Simone gets up and she texts Toby
- 46:21being like, I'm here. Like it is supposed to
- 46:23be sexual because she texts Toby and is like,
- 46:25I'm all alone in this room. Like, are you going
- 46:28to come down or what? And he's like, no.
- 46:28KARA: He opens
- 46:31his phone, which has a Guitar Face phone case
- 46:33and a Guitar Face lock screen. And he opens it
- 46:37up and says, nah.
- 46:37DANI: Nah.
- 46:37KARA: Daphne, I guess she's
- 46:40not in bed. She's in the gym practicing her free
- 46:42throws. And John comes in and he's like, OK,
- 46:45bedtime. You have a big day tomorrow.
- 46:45DANI: Yeah.
- 46:45KARA: And
- 46:48Daphne's like, I am so stressed out. This game
- 46:52is not just for me. You don't get it. And John's
- 46:55like, I do get it, actually, I was a baseball
- 46:58player. And she's like, but you played for yourself.
- 47:00I am playing for a community. And then this was
- 47:03an interesting line. She said, Emmett and Melody's deafness defines them. But I'm just Daphne.
- 47:03DANI: Okay, I was desperate
- 47:10to know your thoughts about this.
- 47:10KARA: I did not like
- 47:12it.
- 47:12DANI: She delivers this monologue about her deaf
- 47:14identity, except it's really about her, like,
- 47:16wishing that she didn't have one. She's like,
- 47:19I'm just Daphne. Like, I'm not deaf, not hearing,
- 47:22just Daphne.
- 47:22KARA: And if I was hearing, I'd just be
- 47:25hearing Daphne. It really seemed like she was
- 47:27putting down Emmett and Melody in that line, where
- 47:31she was like, their deafness defines them and
- 47:33mine doesn't. And so what if your deafness defines
- 47:36you? It's a part of your life. It's a part of
- 47:37your identity. That's the cool thing about it.
- 47:40DANI: I couldn't tell if her big moment later on with
- 47:43the hearing aids is supposed to sort of symbolize
- 47:46her accepting more so her deafness in that moment,
- 47:51or if the writers did not make the connection.
- 47:54If the hearing writers, like, were not trying
- 47:57to make that an intentional point.
- 47:57KARA: I was just,
- 48:01when she turned it off, the hearing aids, it's
- 48:03only because John says tune it out. And I was
- 48:05just like, okay, she's tuning them out. Symbolically.
- 48:08DANI: It felt powerful to me, though. Like, the way
- 48:10they play it, too, in the show, it feels quite
- 48:12powerful.
- 48:12KARA: So, yeah, maybe because she shuts them
- 48:15off and then she can't hear.
- 48:15DANI: Yeah. And it's like
- 48:17a fully silent scene.
- 48:17KARA: I did not like that line.
- 48:21I was like, what is your problem? What's wrong
- 48:23with that?
- 48:23DANI: Yeah. And then the way she ends the
- 48:25monologue is she's like, I just want to be a
- 48:28girl playing basketball. I hated that. I crawled
- 48:32out of my skin. I was like, stop. That's so cringe.
- 48:36KARA: She goes, I represent every deaf person. And
- 48:38while I love being part of a small community,
- 48:40everything I do means something. I wish I could
- 48:42just be Daphne, a girl playing basketball.
- 48:42DANI: God,
- 48:47okay. It flopped for me. Cut to, it's the day
- 48:51of the big game. John's interpreter is there.
- 48:54Thank God. I don't know how he would have given
- 48:56a little pep speech.
- 48:56KARA: I know. I wrote, everyone
- 48:59is white.
- 48:59DANI: God.
- 48:59KARA: Are there no white people? Are
- 49:03there no people of color in Missouri?
- 49:03DANI: Girl, I
- 49:06don't know what's going on.
- 49:06KARA: That was crazy. You're
- 49:08also in LA.
- 49:08DANI: Yeah, they're filming in LA.
- 49:08KARA: I was
- 49:11just looking at the crowd and the teams and I
- 49:13was like, what is going on?
- 49:13DANI: At least in this
- 49:15shot. The team no longer looks 45.
- 49:15KARA: Thank goodness.
- 49:19DANI: Thank God for that.
- 49:19KARA: Game starts.
- 49:19DANI: I wrote, this
- 49:22is a lot of basketball. I'm sure Kara's got it.
- 49:25KARA: You got it. So Daphne passes the ball to Simone
- 49:28out of habit.
- 49:28DANI: Yeah, that's the first shot. Daphne
- 49:32gets the ball and then she gives it to Simone
- 49:34when she does that shot. Another member of the
- 49:38Buckner team is like, glad we didn't get you kicked
- 49:40out after all, and it is revealed, a girl we've
- 49:43never seen before, like just some random girl.
- 49:45KARA: Okay.
- 49:45DANI: Is like basically reveals that it was probably
- 49:49her that brought it up or at least just that
- 49:51she knew about it, so that does further like cement
- 49:54that Simone was not the person to do it. Not that
- 49:56I think Simone deserves forgiveness for literally
- 49:58everything else evil she's done, but I don't think
- 50:02that this was her.
- 50:02KARA: But then, the game continues.
- 50:05Simone got the ball into a fast break and the
- 50:07ball just keeps going back and forth. Daphne
- 50:09is standing in the middle of the court in horror.
- 50:11Girl, go play.
- 50:11DANI: Yeah.
- 50:11KARA: But then John calls timeout.
- 50:14Kathryn and Patrick arrive at the game.
- 50:14DANI: Yeah.
- 50:18KARA: Because who's sitting there? Emmett and Regina.
- 50:18DANI: Yeah,
- 50:20Emmett and Regina are watching the game from the
- 50:22stands. Patrick. Patrick shows up. With courtesy
- 50:26of Kathryn.
- 50:26KARA: Yes.
- 50:26DANI: He says, there she is.
- 50:26KARA: And
- 50:28he comes bearing a sign that says, go Carlton.
- 50:31DANI: Yeah.
- 50:31KARA: That's sweet.
- 50:31DANI: And he's clearly skipped
- 50:33his Arkansas plans.
- 50:33KARA: Yeah.
- 50:33DANI: So he's trying, he's
- 50:36really trying to make an effort. To be like,
- 50:38I don't really understand what it's like to be
- 50:40a parent, but I will support you and show up
- 50:42at the game.
- 50:42KARA: And Kathryn's like, he's cute.
- 50:44DANI: I just feel like Regina was like, I don't like
- 50:46that he's always showing up places. And then
- 50:48he shows up a place that he shouldn't be.
- 50:48KARA: That's
- 50:50true.
- 50:50DANI: Whatever. She seems happy about it, so.
- 50:53KARA: And who else arrives but Cameron?
- 50:53DANI: Yeah. And
- 50:56he says, Emmett, let's talk right now.
- 50:56DANI: Cameron,
- 51:00this is not the time. All of these adults have
- 51:03such terrible timing. In the middle of this game,
- 51:06he even says, like, I love Carlton. I'm so excited
- 51:09to cheer them on. Emmett's like, why don't we watch
- 51:11the game then?
- 51:11DANI: Yeah, and Cameron's like, no,
- 51:13I have to tell you that I'm kicking you out of
- 51:14my house first.
- 51:14KARA: Yeah, I'm giving your mom full
- 51:17custody.
- 51:17DANI: Yeah. Poor Emmett. He really flips out.
- 51:21KARA: He immediately goes, you don't want me.
- 51:21DANI: Yeah.
- 51:23And it's like a rejection wound is clearly opened.
- 51:26He's like, what did I do? Was I too messy? Like,
- 51:28does Olivia want me out? Like, what is it? I
- 51:31feel, I really feel bad for him.
- 51:31KARA: I know.
- 51:31DANI: Like,
- 51:33to feel this way about your parent. To feel like
- 51:35they're like, they don't want you. That's so
- 51:37sad.
- 51:37KARA: It's awful. He really goes into a rage.
- 51:40And Cameron's like, well, Bay said something
- 51:42that really stuck with me. And Emmett is like,
- 51:44Bay?
- 51:44DANI: Yeah. Like, why the fuck?
- 51:44KARA: So she got involved?
- 51:48DANI: Cameron fucking sucks.
- 51:48KARA: I know.
- 51:48DANI: He's just like,
- 51:51I just feel it would be better for everyone.
- 51:53Better for me and your mom if we weren't fighting
- 51:55over you. And it's like, obviously it would be
- 51:57better for Emmett to be with Melody. But like
- 52:00the way he's framing it is so like, I'm just
- 52:03trying to make your mom happy. And then, yeah,
- 52:04he has to drag Bay into it.
- 52:04KARA: Which he did not
- 52:08need to do.
- 52:08DANI: No.
- 52:08KARA: It's awful.
- 52:08DANI: He could have just
- 52:10said, I realized I've like been fighting your
- 52:13mother to like win over her, but like what's best
- 52:16for you probably is for you to be with her while
- 52:18I get my shit together, because I'm going through
- 52:20a midlife crisis.
- 52:20KARA: Well, I think he was trying to
- 52:22say that but then Emmett cut him off.
- 52:22DANI: I don't, I
- 52:25don't want to give Cameron the benefit of the
- 52:26doubt. I don't think he would have been that eloquent.
- 52:28KARA: Yeah that's true. It's time for the underdog scene.
- 52:31DANI: Yeah.
- 52:31KARA: The obvious underdog scene that we love
- 52:34in the sports movie. Simone fouls Daphne.
- 52:34DANI: Yeah,
- 52:37in like the last 10 seconds of the game. Do you
- 52:39think it was intentional? Like, that's so stupid
- 52:43to do that. Do you think she was trying to be
- 52:45like, I'm going to give you a foul so you can
- 52:47win this game so that we'll be friends again?
- 52:49KARA: I think that was my thinking, too.
- 52:49DANI: Yeah.
- 52:49KARA: Because
- 52:51she tends to do stuff for her benefit. So while
- 52:56Buckner wouldn't win, she would maybe get a friend
- 52:59back.
- 52:59DANI: Yeah. And she's like, I don't really care
- 53:01about the game that much. I don't know.
- 53:01KARA: Yeah.
- 53:04So Daphne gets two free throws. Which is great
- 53:07because the score is tied and it's all on her
- 53:09shoulders. And she turns to John and he says,
- 53:12tune it out. So she literally does tune it out.
- 53:15DANI: Yeah, it's like a slo-mo scene. She's about
- 53:18to make her basket and then she's like, wait
- 53:20a second. And she goes and she turns her hearing
- 53:22aids off. It's total silence in the scene.
- 53:22KARA: I
- 53:25used to do this too when I played. But then I
- 53:28wouldn't make my free throws. [BOTH LAUGH].
- 53:28DANI: This worked on
- 53:32me.
- 53:32KARA: It is kind of a tearjerker.
- 53:32DANI: Yeah, it's a
- 53:34tearjerking scene. LeClerc is acting her ass
- 53:37off.
- 53:37KARA: I know. She gets both baskets in and Carlton
- 53:41wins. Yay!
- 53:41DANI: Yay!
- 53:41KARA: And it's now time for slo-mo
- 53:45cheering time. Everyone is jumping and hugging
- 53:48and Principal Rose is like, great job, guys!
- 53:51And John is like, this is so awesome. I can't
- 53:55wait for next year.
- 53:55DANI: Yeah, John's like, next year,
- 53:57we got to get more. We got to get buses. We got
- 53:59to get the whole school down here. We got to
- 54:00make fucking t-shirts.
- 54:00KARA: Do you know who's not
- 54:03in this episode? Travis.
- 54:03DANI: He would have loved
- 54:05to cheer on the Mustangs.
- 54:05KARA: Right?
- 54:05DANI: I guess he's
- 54:08holding it down at the car wash.
- 54:08KARA: Maybe.
- 54:08DANI: Yeah,
- 54:11fucking Principal Rose is like, we'll talk about
- 54:14it on Monday.
- 54:14KARA: Instead of just being like, yeah.
- 54:17DANI: Yeah, just lie. Why are you trying to kill the
- 54:20vibes?
- 54:20KARA: And then she does because she's like,
- 54:22they're still cutting the basketball team. This
- 54:25win didn't magically make the school get money.
- 54:28Sorry, girl.
- 54:28DANI: And so, obviously, Daphne's sad.
- 54:31I know that this is just conflict generated by
- 54:33the writers' for stakes to be involved, but,
- 54:36like, John can just fund the basketball program.
- 54:39KARA: This is my biggest gripe with it, because they
- 54:42held a fundraiser for Buckner, what, like, episode
- 54:45six?
- 54:45DANI: Yeah.
- 54:45KARA: They never do for Carlton.
- 54:45DANI: Well, also,
- 54:48like, how much does the basketball program really
- 54:51cost? John is not getting paid.
- 54:51KARA: No.
- 54:51DANI: Like, Melody
- 54:55is, but she already works for the school.
- 54:55KARA: Right,
- 54:58she's a guidance counselor.
- 54:58DANI: It must not be that
- 55:00much of an added expense to pay her for the extra
- 55:02hours. Like, what is the cost? Like, how much?
- 55:04KARA: How much could a basketball cost?
- 55:04DANI: I don't know,
- 55:07$10,000?
- 55:07KARA: Yeah, you're paying for uniforms, you're
- 55:10paying for travel.
- 55:10DANI: So what? I just am like, the
- 55:13Kennishes could just write a check.
- 55:13KARA: Literally.
- 55:16They have the means, and they never do.
- 55:16DANI: They
- 55:18probably just gave Brizia more than that.
- 55:18KARA: Yeah,
- 55:20sell the car and give the money to Carlton.
- 55:20DANI: I
- 55:22don't even think they need to sell a car.
- 55:22KARA: No,
- 55:24I agree.
- 55:24DANI: Literally just fucking, they wrote Daphne
- 55:27a check for $5,000 just like that. Anyway, I
- 55:31actually can't remember what happens with the
- 55:32basketball program and if they do end up trying
- 55:34to fund it some way, but I was like, these stakes
- 55:38just feel fake to me.
- 55:38KARA: John, if you really wanted
- 55:40to continue coaching, yeah, you could just write
- 55:42out a check to Carlton. Yeah. For like new basketballs.
- 55:45DANI: Just make the car wash the sponsor of the team.
- 55:48KARA: Easy. Done. Now Emmett is FaceTiming Bay. Yeah.
- 55:52He's in like the hotel lobby or something. Crazy
- 55:55if you check in into the hotel and you see this
- 55:57Deaf man sobbing on his phone next to the fireplace.
- 56:01DANI: Fucking signing into his phone and punching walls.
- 56:04Jesus Christ.
- 56:04KARA: Sobbing. And he's like, Bay, you
- 56:07promised to stay out of it. And Bay, to her credit,
- 56:10is defending her actions. And she was like, honey,
- 56:14I was worried about you.
- 56:14DANI: She's like, what am
- 56:16I supposed to do when I see a drawer full
- 56:19of dime bags in the place that you live with
- 56:22your criminal record already? Like, this is concerning.
- 56:26KARA: Yeah, and she was like, I had nightmares that
- 56:27something bad would happen to you. This was a
- 56:29little crazy.
- 56:29DANI: She's definitely overreacting about
- 56:32the weed. She's like, I was picturing rival drug
- 56:34lords, like, showing up at your place. Like,
- 56:36okay, I don't think any of Olivia's friends are.
- 56:39KARA: No, I think they're all just, like, potheads.
- 56:42DANI: Yeah.
- 56:42KARA: Who work at the restaurant she works at.
- 56:44DANI: Yeah, but Emmett is just like. Fuck you.
- 56:44KARA: Fuck
- 56:48you. My mom is brainwashing you. You guys are
- 56:51treating me like a child.
- 56:51DANI: Yeah. And then he punches.
- 56:54KARA: Well, the phone freezes.
- 56:54DANI: Oh, yeah.
- 56:54KARA: Which that's
- 56:57also how I feel when my phone freezes. But then
- 56:59he punches the wall above the fireplace.
- 56:59DANI: Yeah.
- 57:02Like, really injures his hand and also just like,
- 57:05Emmett, you're better than that. Don't be punching
- 57:08walls. Except I don't think he is better than
- 57:09that, actually.
- 57:09KARA: It's such an ick to me when boys
- 57:11punch walls.
- 57:11DANI: It's even more of an ick because
- 57:13he, like, hurts himself immediately and is like,
- 57:15ow!
- 57:15KARA: Daphne's in the basketball court at night.
- 57:18I guess no one cleaned up the court. It's still
- 57:20strewn with confetti. Very High School Musical.
- 57:23DANI: Yeah, so true.
- 57:23KARA: She just looks around and reminisces.
- 57:27DANI: She's taking it in.
- 57:27KARA: Simone walks to the ice machine
- 57:30and she sees Emmett like sniffling, whimpering.
- 57:35DANI: Yeah, he's like whimpering and crying and snotting
- 57:37into the ice. That is not sanitary.
- 57:37KARA: No, but he's
- 57:41scooping ice to ice his injured wrist from punching
- 57:45the wall.
- 57:45DANI: Yes.
- 57:45KARA: And Simone is like, you punched
- 57:48the wall? I've been there. I just lost the game,
- 57:50so.
- 57:50DANI: She's like, I wanted to punch a wall after
- 57:52losing that game today.
- 57:52KARA: But. Instead, I'm going
- 57:55to go back to my hotel room and drink vodka and
- 57:58watch pay-per-view.
- 57:58DANI: Yeah, she says, I have
- 58:01a bottle of vodka in my room. I was planning
- 58:03on having a few shots and watching pay-per-view.
- 58:06KARA: That's such a sad thing to do alone.
- 58:06DANI: Not only
- 58:09that, but just that lot. Like, that's such a
- 58:1116-year-old thing to say. I'm going to have
- 58:13a few shots and watch some pay-per-view.
- 58:13KARA: Yeah.
- 58:16DANI: And then Emmett's like, okay, great. And he's
- 58:19like, I got to go wrap my hand. And she's like.
- 58:22I can wrap it. Would you like me to help you? [GROANS].
- 58:25Meanwhile, Bay is laying on her bed, combat boots
- 58:29laced up, laced up to the knee. And she's so
- 58:33sad. And Toby walks in and he's like, I've got
- 58:36your fender, like, figured out, whatever. And
- 58:38she's like, thanks, but I'm not going to be needing
- 58:40that. I don't think Emmett's ever going to talk
- 58:42to me again. And then Toby says, you guys are
- 58:44perfect together. It'll be fine. Toby. You are
- 58:47lying. I know he's just being nice to comfort
- 58:51her, but don't say that shit to Bay.
- 58:51KARA: I wouldn't
- 58:53say that to anyone.
- 58:53DANI: I wouldn't say that to anyone,
- 58:55but also not Bay and her boyfriend who've been
- 58:57fighting every single episode since the first
- 58:59episode they got together.
- 58:59KARA: But he doesn't know
- 59:01that.
- 59:01DANI: No, Toby doesn't give a fuck. He just says,
- 59:04you guys are perfect together.
- 59:04KARA: Cut to next scene.
- 59:06DANI: Next scene, Emmett is in bed.
- 59:06KARA: Straddling Simone.
- 59:11DANI: Straddling Simone.
- 59:11KARA: Making out.
- 59:11DANI: Foley takes his
- 59:14shirt off. They are going to have sex. They're
- 59:17going to have sex.
- 59:17KARA: Credits roll.
- 59:17DANI: Credits roll.
- 59:20I felt just as scandalized watching that scene
- 59:23today that I felt watching it when I was-
- 59:23KARA: Like
- 59:2714?
- 59:27DANI: Yeah. Oh my god. Yeah, I was like 12 years
- 59:31old. I remember that scene playing. I was scandalized
- 59:34then.
- 59:34KARA: I was like, oh my god.
- 59:34DANI: I felt scandalized
- 59:36now. Emmett's such a cutie, but I personally
- 59:38don't feel that I need to see him shirtless ever.
- 59:41It felt too intimate. Like, I wanted to close
- 59:43my eyes.
- 59:43KARA: I think I was like, that's a minor.
- 59:45I don't need to see that.
- 59:45DANI: Well, the actor isn't,
- 59:48but yeah, in the show, yeah, the character is.
- 59:51But it was just like, I don't know. It felt weird.
- 59:54KARA: I get it.
- 59:54DANI: I don't know. I don't want to see him
- 59:56shirtless. The only people on the show I want
- 59:58to see shirtless are Angelo and - And Austin
- 1:00:00Butler. And Wilke, yeah. I get it.
- 1:00:00KARA: No Austin
- 1:00:02Butler this episode either.
- 1:00:02DANI: No, he didn't end
- 1:00:05up coming to the game. That is actually kind
- 1:00:07of crazy. I do feel that he would have wanted
- 1:00:09to be there.
- 1:00:09KARA: Right?
- 1:00:09DANI: And maybe Daphne, after the
- 1:00:12snafu in the last episode where she's trying
- 1:00:14to teach him sign and he's just trying to make
- 1:00:16out with her, maybe she was like, yeah, you're
- 1:00:18definitely not coming to the game.
- 1:00:18KARA: Maybe.
- 1:00:18DANI: You
- 1:00:19can't handle it. Or maybe he just, like, had
- 1:00:22the same test that Toby had, so he couldn't.
- 1:00:24I don't know.
- 1:00:24KARA: No explanation for that.
- 1:00:24DANI: No explanation
- 1:00:27for that. No explanation for why Travis isn't
- 1:00:30there. Because it seems like all of Carlton is
- 1:00:32there.
- 1:00:32KARA: Yeah, it seems like every Deaf person
- 1:00:34from the U.S. came to this game.
- 1:00:34DANI: I guess they
- 1:00:36hadn't booked Travis as a series regular yet.
- 1:00:39KARA: Maybe not.
- 1:00:39DANI: They probably just booked him as a
- 1:00:40guest star.
- 1:00:40KARA: Yeah. So. He will be a series regular soon.
- 1:00:43DANI: Yeah, we promise, guys.
- 1:00:43KARA: I like this episode.
- 1:00:45DANI: Me too. I mean, I don't like what happens in
- 1:00:48this episode.
- 1:00:48KARA: Me neither.
- 1:00:48DANI: But it's such a fun
- 1:00:50episode to watch. I'm just like, I'm still shocked.
- 1:00:54KARA: Scandalized.
- 1:00:54DANI: I just felt like sick to my stomach.
- 1:00:57KARA: I know.
- 1:00:57DANI: This whole episode.
- 1:00:57KARA: This is the beginning
- 1:00:58of that.
- 1:00:58DANI: This is, yeah, this is the beginning
- 1:01:00of the end for Emmett, really. His downfall.
- 1:01:02And also just like, Bay. Poor Bay. Really going
- 1:01:05through it.
- 1:01:05KARA: I know. Really, the whole episode
- 1:01:08was like, Bay and Daphne experiencing the craziest
- 1:01:12amount of pressure.
- 1:01:12DANI: Yeah.
- 1:01:12KARA: Trying to do their
- 1:01:15best.
- 1:01:15DANI: I know.
- 1:01:15KARA: And then they're both being punished
- 1:01:18at the end for it.
- 1:01:18DANI: Yeah. God. That's girlhood.
- 1:01:21KARA: Literally. Thanks for listening, guys.
- 1:01:21DANI: Thanks
- 1:01:23for listening.
- 1:01:23KARA: Also, if you would be so kind,
- 1:01:27please leave a review on Spotify or Apple or
- 1:01:30wherever you're listening.
- 1:01:30DANI: Oh, yeah, please.
- 1:01:31KARA: A comment or review. That'd be really helpful.
- 1:01:34I personally would love to end up getting sponsors.
- 1:01:37In the future. So I could pay someone to transcribe
- 1:01:40our podcast because it's a lot of work. It's
- 1:01:43just the two of us, guys.
- 1:01:43DANI: I would love to pay
- 1:01:44an editor. That would rock. Yeah, please leave
- 1:01:47a review if you like the show. If you don't,
- 1:01:50then don't leave a review. You could email us
- 1:01:52if you really need to talk about it.
- 1:01:52KARA: Yeah, we
- 1:01:54do have our email in our show notes.
- 1:01:54DANI: Yeah.
- 1:01:54KARA: Thanks
- 1:01:57for listening and we'll see you next week. Bye.
