- 0:10Some old friends facing our fears, laughing through the
- 0:13chaos and drinking some beers. So here's to the laughs, the
- 0:16crumbs and the cheers, All the awkward moments and we're still
- 0:19here 'cause then, Leanne, we're just doing our thing.
- 0:22It's our crazy life. 01 more thing.
- 0:25One more thing. Welcome to Oh and one more
- 0:33thing, a podcast where 2 long time friends try to figure out
- 0:36what the heck is going on with this crazy thing called middle
- 0:38age. It's a mix of stories of how we
- 0:40navigate our lives and maybe some questionable advice.
- 0:43Some days we're wise, other days we're just trying to remember
- 0:46where the heck we left our phone.
- 0:47So join us as we laugh, groan, and maybe even learn a little
- 0:50something about surviving in the second-half of life.
- 0:53Oh. And one more thing.
- 1:05Hi. I'm Brian, welcome to.
- 1:06Oh, and one more thing. Hey, I'm Rob.
- 1:08Hey, how are you doing today? Brian Oh, I'm all right.
- 1:11Yeah, is, is your summer going well?
- 1:13Oh, it's going good. Good.
- 1:14We're getting out and see in the sun a little bit, having some
- 1:17fun. Good.
- 1:18It's gone fast. Oh yeah, I can't believe we're
- 1:20back. Right.
- 1:21Isn't that crazy? Yeah.
- 1:23So we're back a week earlier than I expected.
- 1:25Well, I know. It's been it's been way too
- 1:27long. It's been too long, so obviously
- 1:29I wanted to get back in the in the saddle again, but.
- 1:32Absolutely can't stay away. Yeah, why are we back so early?
- 1:36We have a special guest today. It's a bonus episode with a
- 1:38special guest, Mitchell Hall. Hello, I'm Johnny Cash.
- 1:43Hi, Mitchell. How's it going?
- 1:44Hi, Mitchell. He's the headliner of his band
- 1:47Mitchell Hall in the Tennessee Trio.
- 1:48Welcome. What you tell us kind of a
- 1:51little bit about yourself, Mitchell?
- 1:52Well, not much. Just Johnny Cash tribute to this
- 1:56kind of the the bulk of how people know me.
- 1:59I've been doing it for a little over 8 years if you can believe
- 2:02that. A while it's yeah, that's.
- 2:04Time flies. Eight years already.
- 2:06A little over eight. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 2:08In May of 2017. OK.
- 2:10Very cool. So to give our listeners a
- 2:12little background on who Mitchell is, he's an old soul in
- 2:16a young body. I took this right off your
- 2:18website by the way. He loves old classic cars and
- 2:22fifties, 60s and 70s country music and rock'n'roll.
- 2:25Mitchell Hall brings a young Johnny Cash back to life with
- 2:28his spot on performances. The Tennessee Trio replicates
- 2:32the boom chicka boom sound that was uniquely Johnny Cash.
- 2:36The Tennessee Trio is made-up of Michael Ness on lead guitar,
- 2:40Dave Schwartz on drums, and Rich Pryder on bass guitar.
- 2:43So welcome to the show. Thank you for having me there,
- 2:46Brian and Rob. Yeah.
- 2:48So if we talk a little, how, how do we know Mitchell Wise
- 2:51Mitchell here and, and, and how do we know him?
- 2:52Oh, it's a long story. A long.
- 2:54It's a bad story too, no? Long, so it's.
- 2:56A great story. It's actually two parts.
- 2:58I mean, Brian and I both know Mitchell from show choir.
- 3:01Obviously, show choir. That's how you got your.
- 3:03Well, I actually knew Rob before show.
- 3:05Choir say I've known Mitchell quite a much longer time than
- 3:08that 'cause my side job in the winter is driving school bus and
- 3:11Mitchell was on my bus when I would fill in in.
- 3:13Yeah, this was back before I had a low voice.
- 3:16Yeah, this. Is I mean, I think I was trying
- 3:18to think about this today, how long?
- 3:19I mean, this was elementary school 'cause I started driving
- 3:21in 2008 mm hmm. And the first route I drove was
- 3:24your route out to where you live out the middle of nowhere.
- 3:26You're on the bus for an hour and. 1/2.
- 3:29You're on the bus forever, so we got to know each other 'cause
- 3:31you're the last stop most days and.
- 3:33First stop on and last stop off. Uncle Rob.
- 3:37Right, so I've known Mitchell a long, long time and and over the
- 3:40years through I'm just driving the bus and doing show car, I've
- 3:42gotten to know your family a little bit.
- 3:44Your sister Brittany. Yep, I would always pick on her
- 3:48'cause I always say. Oh, it's just easy.
- 3:49Well, it's easy 'cause she's easy to pick.
- 3:51On, but I'd go out with like Brian, right?
- 3:54Yeah, you guys, you pick on me way too much.
- 3:56We do. We do.
- 3:57But I was, I'll go up to her during show choir, give her a
- 3:59big hug. Brandy, it's so good to see you.
- 4:00You're my favorite. And then of course, I go to the
- 4:02very next person. Hi, Susie, give her a big hug.
- 4:04You're my favorite. Brandy would draw, would drop to
- 4:08the ground, but between just us 3 here and nobody else, she
- 4:11really was my favorite in show choir.
- 4:12So don't tell her that though. And we got to know your mom
- 4:15quite well too, because she volunteered for a lot of events.
- 4:17So you have a very, very cool and close knit family so.
- 4:21I appreciate that. That's great.
- 4:22And they're big supporters of you.
- 4:24Oh yeah. Yeah, Yep, Brian, you're you're,
- 4:27you're your type, your story now, I guess.
- 4:29OK, my story. Well, As for Show Core, of
- 4:32course we we knew to come there. But there was this time that I
- 4:36was doing the sets for the musicals at the high school and
- 4:40there was this young man sitting in the audience waiting for his
- 4:42sister. And lo and behold, it was you.
- 4:46And you came up to help me and we started building sets
- 4:48together. Oh, that's kind of cool.
- 4:49Nice. Did that and then there was one
- 4:52or two years did some stage true stuff with spotlights and stuff
- 4:56which was up on the crow's nest and we're doing that and of
- 4:59course our awesome stage true times and show choir.
- 5:03That's right. That's right.
- 5:04Good times. So what got you into music?
- 5:07That a very early age of probably 3 or so growing up with
- 5:12all the old school music, the 50s, sixties rock'n'roll,
- 5:16anything from the 1920s through the 80s of country music, 90s,
- 5:20early 2000s, anything from The Carter Family to Hank Williams
- 5:25to Johnny Cash to Alan Jackson and George Strait.
- 5:28Grew up with music. And then obviously in school I
- 5:31was in choir for from kindergarten through senior
- 5:33year, show choir for five years. So definitely got some music
- 5:37background there. I safe to assume Johnny Cash is
- 5:40your favorite. Yes, I mean, there's something
- 5:43to be said about the legends, you know, Johnny Cash and
- 5:46there's, there's so many great legends from back in the day.
- 5:49I mean, you couldn't name them all.
- 5:51They all had uniqueness and especially Johnny Cash.
- 5:54Do you focus primarily just only on Johnny Cash in your sets or
- 5:58do you kind of branch out a little bit?
- 5:59It's strictly a Johnny Cash tribute.
- 6:02Back when I had my first band, it was Johnny Cash tribute and
- 6:05then it branched out to Vintage Rock'n'roll, Elvis and Jerry Lee
- 6:08Lewis. And then we had Vintage Country,
- 6:10John Denver and some other artists that we did.
- 6:14So that I did a little bit. But at at the end of the day,
- 6:18when I first started that my first band out of high school, I
- 6:21wanted to do a Johnny Cash tribute, Strictly.
- 6:25And then after that band ended and I got this, my new band that
- 6:28I have now, that was my my big thing.
- 6:32OK, so there was a lot of music growing up, always something
- 6:37happening in in your household. Yes, yeah, there's there was
- 6:40always music being played and on the old big stereo that my dad
- 6:44had and the old vintage stereo from the 70s and playing CDs and
- 6:49stuff like that. It was it was pretty fun.
- 6:52That's. Cool, so in your opinion, what
- 6:55keeps Johnny Cash more relevant to the newer generations of
- 6:58fans? I would say it Johnny Cash is
- 7:02known for the the the later recordings that he did.
- 7:05That's how the younger generation knows him is.
- 7:07Yeah, when he got resurrected basically in his career in the
- 7:11late 90s and early 2000s before he passed away with American
- 7:14recordings with Rick Rubin doing some 9 inch nail covers.
- 7:19And you know, when the man comes around and and hurt, that's how
- 7:23Johnny Cash was kind of last remembered.
- 7:25But at the end of the day, Johnny Cash was really known for
- 7:29the heart of his career was that old country traditional train
- 7:33sound back in the 50s, sixties and early 70's.
- 7:36The 1st 25 years of his career was the biggest part of his
- 7:39career, which is what we replicate for the most part,
- 7:42especially the 50s and early 60s would a lot of his big hits were
- 7:46being recorded right? So you mentioned your first band
- 7:49earlier, and that was a lot of your high school friends, if I
- 7:51remember correctly. But so how did you get involved
- 7:53with your current band, the Tennessee Trio?
- 7:56I met my league guitar player and I retired drummer down at a
- 8:01small radio station down in KCHK 95.5 FM in New Prague and very
- 8:08great radio station. They had a, it's called LMF Live
- 8:11Musicians Friday. They've started it back in 2012.
- 8:14They've never missed a Friday. They've almost got 700 episodes,
- 8:19never missed a Friday. I've been on there a handful of
- 8:22times and every 100 episodes they'll have a big celebration.
- 8:28All these musicians will come down.
- 8:30They'll start at 5:00 in the morning and every band or
- 8:33musician gets 3 songs. So I met them in 2020 and it was
- 8:37LMF 404 hundredth celebration. And that's How I Met my my
- 8:43league guitar and my league guitar player and my drummer.
- 8:46And I did 3 songs with them and it was awesome.
- 8:50And at this point, the my first band was falling apart.
- 8:52People are going off to college and stuff like that.
- 8:55And I told him I said what my intention was, that I wanted to
- 8:58keep this band going, you know, come hell or high water.
- 9:02Yeah. And, you know, they're older
- 9:05gentlemen and almost retired, so they got nothing else better to
- 9:07do like Brian. I do this podcast.
- 9:11Yeah, so I told him what I you know, what I do with the Johnny
- 9:15Cash tribute and looking for league guitar player and some
- 9:17band members and the rest is history.
- 9:20Very cool. What's your favorite song to
- 9:22perform? Folsom Prison Blues by far.
- 9:25We just recently threw in some new songs here a few weeks back,
- 9:29and another good one. This is actually my first waltz
- 9:32that I've ever performed. It was a good night, Irene, and
- 9:36that's a classic waltz that a lot of old timers know.
- 9:39But it goes back. That song goes back to the late
- 9:411800s. OK, like 1896 maybe.
- 9:44OK, cool. OK, so obviously you play
- 9:48guitar. We know that.
- 9:48Do you play any other instruments?
- 9:50I play a little bit of harmonica just for one song that we do on
- 9:53the show. So I wouldn't say, I mean, I
- 9:55play it, but I don't know more than one song.
- 9:58So I don't know if that's if that works or.
- 10:02I'd count it and then. Like drums I play train rhythm
- 10:06one with them so I don't flat Collins either but I I have a
- 10:10lot of people that don't don't realize that I I have picked up
- 10:14a bass a little bit throughout the years.
- 10:17I actually started upright bass first before electric bass.
- 10:20Really love upright bass. Yeah, that's cool playing the
- 10:23the slap rockabilly bass for like Johnny Cash and some other
- 10:27stuff. Electric bass I've transpose,
- 10:30which is a completely different animal going from upright to
- 10:32electric, right, or vice versa. But there's been a few acoustic
- 10:36shows that I've done locally. Once in a while I'll play bass
- 10:40and just kind of surprise the audience and they'll come up
- 10:43saying I didn't know he played bass, and then I say I didn't
- 10:46realize he played it either. So I I see have a Fender guitar.
- 10:51Is that do you have a favorite guitar?
- 10:53Is that just kind of what you're using right now?
- 10:56I don't really have a favorite guitar, but I mean country music
- 10:59and a lot of the old timers back in the day, 40s, fifties, 60s
- 11:03were it was always Martin's usually OK, but Fender is also
- 11:07well known for country music. Electric guitars for sure,
- 11:10Fender Telecasters and stuff. But Johnny Cash had one like
- 11:13this. OK, this isn't identical to what
- 11:15he had, but he had a black Fender guitar just like this,
- 11:17the same headstock and it was a full body, not a cutaway but
- 11:20pretty close. He had one like this in the 60s.
- 11:22It was black. Yeah, since you're trying to be
- 11:24more like Johnny Cash, of course you should have a good car
- 11:27guitar like him. Oh yeah, that's.
- 11:28Right. So I know you play a lot of gigs
- 11:30here kind of locally, but what's the farthest you've ever gone
- 11:32for a show? The farthest we've had in two
- 11:36years in a row. We had five shows and six shows
- 11:40in five days down in Vegas and Arizona, down in Mesa, AZ, Lake
- 11:46Havasu, Henderson, NV, which is right outside of Vegas.
- 11:51There's a couple other towns that they're blanking out, but
- 11:54been down there. We've done a couple side side
- 11:58Curb St. performances down in Nashville in front of the Ryman
- 12:02Auditorium, just for, yeah, shits and giggles.
- 12:06Just because you can. Just because you can, yeah.
- 12:08Absolutely, yeah. Yeah, why not?
- 12:10You know, it's something to talk about and put on the resume,
- 12:13right, if you will. What do?
- 12:14You What do you think the largest crowd is that you've
- 12:16had? Ballpark, I'd say well over 1000
- 12:20people oh wow and one of them actually unbelievably being a
- 12:23music in the park, which is unheard of.
- 12:25Oh yeah I think that was last year or two years ago down and
- 12:28can't remember it was Lakeville or Prior Lake.
- 12:30It was our first time there and it was, it was well over 800
- 12:34people, I'd say. Yeah, close to 1000.
- 12:36And then obviously you get county fairs and stuff, you got
- 12:39people rotating, but that's well over 1000 people and.
- 12:42We're going to talk a little bit about Simpson's Fest in a little
- 12:44bit, which is coming up in a couple days now, where this is
- 12:46dropping on Thursday until this weekend.
- 12:48You're playing at Stifton's Fest.
- 12:49There's a lot of people there. I mean, you draw a huge crowd
- 12:52there. I mean, it's that place is
- 12:54packed. It is.
- 12:54That's probably one of the bigger shows that I'm well known
- 12:57for is at Stifton's Fest. I've been there.
- 13:00This is either 7 or #8 as far as the year in the performance for
- 13:03me. I've been there consecutively.
- 13:05Yeah, I believe it is 8 years. OK.
- 13:08I think ever since I've started doing this, I think it's it
- 13:11sounds about right. Yeah, I know.
- 13:12We've seen you there quite a few times.
- 13:14And to let everybody know, Stifton Fest is a German
- 13:17festival in Norwood, young America.
- 13:18It's coming up well, this coming weekend, it's.
- 13:20Coming weekend 24th, 24th yeah so.
- 13:23In August. Yes, in August.
- 13:24Yep, we will. We will be there.
- 13:25Yep, absolutely. We're going to be there, Cheer
- 13:27Neon. That's right.
- 13:28Have you written any of your own music yet?
- 13:30I haven't written any. I've rewritten songs.
- 13:33Brian knows that too well. But yeah, there, there's been
- 13:39some Johnny Cash songs that I've, I've rewritten.
- 13:43I don't know if you if you, if you too remember Joseph Korkins.
- 13:46He was in my class. He'd passed away sophomore year,
- 13:50I believe it was, or early junior year of leukemia.
- 13:53OK, I do remember that, yes. Rewrote a Johnny Cash song
- 13:57called Give My Love to Rose to Give My Love to Joe Rewrote that
- 14:00one. And then last year when we had
- 14:02that historic flood with all the rain with the Minnesota River or
- 14:06the Mississippi too, I guess, but more than Minnesota, that
- 14:10Johnny Cash had a song with the same experience of flooding down
- 14:14in Arkansas with the Mississippi in 1937.
- 14:17And 13 years later, he wrote a song called 5 Feet High and
- 14:20Rising. And it was a very well known
- 14:22song, very good hit form. And last year, about a year ago
- 14:27now, a little over a year ago, I rewrote that to 10 Feet High and
- 14:31Rising, throwing in some of the Minnesota history of the 1965
- 14:34flood that we had. And then last year a lot of
- 14:37towns got flooded out, Mankato, Saint Peter and Henderson,
- 14:40Waterville, Henderson beat that 1965 record by a foot and 1/2.
- 14:44It was unreal. And Carver and Chaska shock be
- 14:47almost, almost beat it, but right.
- 14:50And then some of the verses I threw in with the the dam that
- 14:54broke down South of Mankato and then having the water rise even
- 14:58more, Right, Right. I I I ask you if you written
- 15:01your music yet, 'cause I the the one of the the very one of the
- 15:04most distinct first memories I have you singing a Johnny Cash
- 15:06tune is at show course spectacular.
- 15:10What you saying? I've been everywhere but you did
- 15:12the Minnesota counties. Yep.
- 15:14To me, that was just. I mean, I seriously sat there
- 15:15with my. Job unbelievable.
- 15:17Like why don't go first of all? How could he even remember all
- 15:20those counties and then get them to rhyme right in the song?
- 15:23It was amazing, yeah. Very super impressive.
- 15:26Super impressive. Yeah, that was kind of the the
- 15:28big start and stardom to the the whole thing 8 1/2 years ago.
- 15:33So what is your favorite part of performing?
- 15:36I would say it's. It's so unexplainable, like you
- 15:39can't put into words the best awesome thing.
- 15:42I love doing theaters and some of the big festivals are
- 15:46awesome. Like we're talking about
- 15:47Stiffens Fest in county fairs with a lot of people.
- 15:50But the theaters, because we we put up, we put on the show as
- 15:53you know, and you're telling a story, you're putting on a show,
- 15:57so you want people to sit there and watch the show.
- 16:01So the theaters is our bread and butter.
- 16:03The best thing is at the very end of the performance.
- 16:06And I've had a time in and time again standing ovations, but
- 16:11once they're up and hooting and hollering at the end of the
- 16:13show, the loud applause, the whistling, the hooting and
- 16:17hollering and I walk off stage, it's it's so awesome.
- 16:21That's going to be a great feeling.
- 16:23It is it's you can't put it into words.
- 16:26It's so exciting. That's awesome.
- 16:33Hey, this is Rob. I wanted to take a moment to
- 16:35talk about spring and Green. I've been using them since 2007.
- 16:39They provide fertilizer, weed control, lawn insect control,
- 16:42and core aeration services for my lawn.
- 16:44They also spray for mosquitoes, which is huge in Minnesota and
- 16:47new later this year. Liquid aerations and home pest
- 16:50control. They're a locally owned and
- 16:52operated company. Super easy to get a hold of and
- 16:54work with. They'll give you the intention
- 16:56and service that you deserve. Visit

- 17:01your property and a sign up for service.
- 17:03You can even register for auto pay or prepaid to save a little
- 17:05bit of cash right there on the website or shoot them a message
- 17:08with any questions. That's spring. dashgreen.com,
- 17:11springdashgreen.com. OK, we're back.
- 17:21So what is the strangest thing that might have ever happened to
- 17:24you while you're on a stage? While I'm on stage.
- 17:27The strangest thing? Well, there's probably a couple
- 17:29things. There was one time down in
- 17:32Kenyon, MN that we were playing in the American Legion and right
- 17:36after the show got done, I threw my guitar over my shoulder to
- 17:40take it off and the part of the body of the guitar nailed me
- 17:44right in the eyebrow and I it gashed open, started bleeding.
- 17:50That's one way to end the show. Yeah, that is.
- 17:54And then there was another one, another time with our retired
- 17:57drummer. We were down in Cresco, IA in a
- 18:00theater, and about halfway through the performance he went
- 18:03to reach down for a drumstick or a setlist or something that fell
- 18:06down. I think it was a setlist that he
- 18:08had up on one of his drums. Well, when he reached down, he's
- 18:12on an elevated riser. You can see where this is going.
- 18:14Yeah. And, well, the one of the legs
- 18:17of his seat kicked back when he went to reach down.
- 18:20He didn't notice. Well, he went to sit back and
- 18:23fell back off the back of it. Yeah, fell off the back of the
- 18:27riser about a foot and 1/2 and. He was OK to continue
- 18:31performing. Oh yeah, rough and tumble.
- 18:33What's probably the toughest Johnny Cash song to perform?
- 18:36The toughest to perform, Oh boy. I would say maybe lyric wise,
- 18:40with a lot of words is probably the Ballad of Ira Hayes.
- 18:43That's a pretty lengthy, wordy song telling a story.
- 18:47There's no real traditional chorus, verse and all that.
- 18:51And this can be a little tough because you I know people know
- 18:52the song. So yeah, you don't want to screw
- 18:54it up, because if you do, what's?
- 18:55Happened they're. Going to point you out.
- 18:57Yeah. Hey, dude.
- 18:58Well, I, I hate when that happens.
- 19:00Like when you start the show, you get into like 2 songs and
- 19:02then you screw up like the third song of the show.
- 19:04It's like and this should be happening at the end of the show
- 19:07then. What do you do?
- 19:08Yeah, but yeah, as far as the hardest to play like guitar wise
- 19:14to remember that's got some not a traditional 3 chord song would
- 19:19probably be understand your man. OK, that's got kind of a weird
- 19:24chord progression, I I would say.
- 19:26Yeah. Do you do you play the same set
- 19:28list and you show it? You kind of try to mix?
- 19:29It up a little bit. Each year we change it up a
- 19:31little bit. You know, we'll take out songs
- 19:33and throw in songs we haven't played for right a year or two.
- 19:36But there's obviously the staples you have to play at
- 19:38every show, so oh. Yeah, you get your iconic songs
- 19:40that you got to. Play Ring of Fire, right?
- 19:43Yeah, obviously got to play that.
- 19:44Yep. You get tired of it.
- 19:46Oh, no, no, I never get tired of playing these songs.
- 19:49I mean, and the one most requested song that we that we
- 19:52get is either Orange Blossom Special with the harmonicas,
- 19:55Yeah, or I've been everywhere, everywhere.
- 19:57Could you do a little? I've been everywhere.
- 19:59Oh, I suppose I've been. Everywhere, man I've been
- 20:05everywhere, man. Cross deserts, Bear man.
- 20:09I breathe the mountain air. Man, I've traveled light at my
- 20:12chair. Man, I've been everywhere In
- 20:16Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota, Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow,
- 20:20Sarasota, Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma, Tampa, Panama,
- 20:24Matabola Blue of the Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amaro took
- 20:27what about to get batted And I'm the killer.
- 20:29I've been everywhere, man, I've been everywhere.
- 20:33Man. Boston deserts Bear Man I
- 20:35breathe the mountain air. Man, I've traveled out at my
- 20:39sheer. Man, I've been everywhere.
- 20:42I've been to Boston. Charleston Dean.
- 20:44Louisiana, Washington. To Houston, the keys to.
- 20:46Tessa Can of Monterey Verde, Santa Fe Town Blues.
- 20:49Again, the rock black box. At the Rock.
- 20:51Horses. Tennessee Hennessy, Chief.
- 20:52The Keys. For Lake Randall Lake and.
- 20:54Those 3 Crater Lake Pizza. I've been free where, man?
- 20:57I've been everywhere, man. Boss it is.
- 21:00It's a bear, man. I breathe the mountain air, man.
- 21:04I've traveled out at my share, man.
- 21:06I've been everywhere. I love that.
- 21:11That is awesome. So you know, you've got groupies
- 21:15in US, but do you have any other groupies that follow you around
- 21:18from show to show? Oh.
- 21:18Yeah, there's, there's plenty of groupies.
- 21:20There's a couple that that are roadies.
- 21:23They don't like being the roadies, but we make them be
- 21:24roadies. Yeah.
- 21:26These are your friends. They're the roadies.
- 21:28I wouldn't. I suppose they're friends.
- 21:32They might be listening to this. Yes, yes.
- 21:35So I know you like old cars, like what's your follow you on
- 21:38social media? What do you do?
- 21:39I do, obviously. What's the car that you drive?
- 21:42I drive a 1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88 that was my grandfather's
- 21:46Oldsmobile that he bought brand new at Linda Olds in
- 21:49Bloomington. And then my my father had it for
- 21:5315 years and then now I've got it.
- 21:56And and it's been restored at some point, I'm guessing.
- 21:58It has not been restored. It's all really, it's all
- 22:00original. That's original.
- 22:01Yep, hold the buckets. You just you just see the good
- 22:03size of the car when I take a picture.
- 22:06A lot. So if you haven't, if you're not
- 22:08following Mitchell yet, following what's your what's
- 22:10your social medias? Mitchell Hall and the Tennessee
- 22:12Trio, our Facebook page and then my personal page, Mitchell Hall.
- 22:15OK, we've got our website where you can find all of our shows
- 22:17and ticket links at Mitchell Hall and the Tennessee trio.com.
- 22:20But going back to classic cars, I don't know if you know this,
- 22:23but I've I've owned 7 classic cars at one time.
- 22:27Really. I've had two collector John
- 22:28Deere tractors. A total of classic cars I've had
- 22:31in the last five years was 9 classic cars.
- 22:33What were they? OK, you know you have to name
- 22:35them all. Just name a couple of your your
- 22:36favorites. Well, I mean, they're all
- 22:38interesting. So the oldest I had was an
- 22:40original 1922 Ford Model T Woody pickup truck.
- 22:44That was original, original Minnesota vehicle.
- 22:47I had the original Minnesota plate.
- 22:48Oh wow. Well, that's amazing.
- 22:51A custom 1923 Ford Model TT bucket.
- 22:55I had a 1929 Chevy hot rod that was custom built and then a 1953
- 23:01Chevrolet 4 door sedan 210 had the old inline 6 that was all
- 23:05original. A 1965 Pontiac Bonneville big
- 23:09boat 4 door hardtop. Beautiful car turquoise paint.
- 23:13And and you're saying had you don't have these anymore?
- 23:15Had you should have bought them with your money.
- 23:17I should have bought them, but you know, my dad had a car
- 23:21collection. It just happened to be the die
- 23:23cast model cars. That's all And.
- 23:28Then but he had like 40 of them, so you know you're 9, his 40.
- 23:31Is a lot, really, Yeah. It's kind of a wash.
- 23:33Yeah, Then I had a, you know, Johnny Cash black Cadillac.
- 23:38So I had a 1970 black Cadillac, 1970 Cadillac hearse.
- 23:45That was really awesome. Mint condition.
- 23:46All original did did. You drive the hearse around.
- 23:49I did. That's awesome.
- 23:51That's cool. Drove it to a drove it to a few
- 23:54shows and then I had a the I have the 75 Olds.
- 23:59My my first classic that I had was a 1978 Ford Ranchero.
- 24:04The old pickup car body style similar to the El Camino and
- 24:08then the newest classic car I had was a 1979 Lincoln Town Car
- 24:14huge another big huge car and. Where are you finding all?
- 24:18These most of them I found on Facebook marketplace.
- 24:21There is a couple out of dealership like that Lincoln I
- 24:24got at Apple, used Ford in Shakopee, but most of them have
- 24:28been, you know, private owned on Facebook marketplace you can
- 24:32find some good deals and and. Then are you spending time
- 24:35restoring them to sell them again or what are you doing with
- 24:37them? No, just I find them original.
- 24:40That's how I like them all original or stock if you will.
- 24:44They they may have been restored by someone or fixed up.
- 24:49But no, I just buy them, drive them.
- 24:51You know, you're going to have your typical, you know, fixer
- 24:55uppers, right? You know, new tires or a fuel
- 24:58pump or something like that. Yeah.
- 24:59What if something people probably don't know about you?
- 25:01Other than the cars. Other than the cars.
- 25:03Other than the cars, well, like I mentioned earlier, you know,
- 25:05playing bass, I would say something that they don't know
- 25:09about me, man. I mean, I've been to a lot of
- 25:12states between performing and show choir and then performing
- 25:16with the band. I've been to Hawaii 5 times.
- 25:19I've been to Canada 4 times, Florida a number of times so.
- 25:24Are you performing in any of these other destinations?
- 25:27Not Hawaii, I have not. Not Canada.
- 25:29Not Florida. But you like to travel.
- 25:31I love to travel. Yep.
- 25:33The furthest I've traveled in the Midwest, We've been in the
- 25:37Dakotas, we've been in Iowa and we've done one show in Wisconsin
- 25:40on the furthest we've gone, which we actually have it booked
- 25:43again this year, is 6 hours away up in Park River, ND It's about
- 25:4945 minutes South of the Canadian border.
- 25:51Okay, that. Pulls in a crowd, I'm sure the
- 25:54whole town. I I've noticed you and I have a
- 25:58significant other. I do you do I?
- 26:00Does she like to travel as well? Yeah, she likes when she, when
- 26:03she can, she'll, she'll tag along and she, she loves it.
- 26:08She's a huge Johnny Cash fan. So I was one nice thing.
- 26:10Yeah, having the the the similarities and right, every
- 26:13once in a while when we're when we're at home and you got the
- 26:16classic country music playing, it's like what I grew up with.
- 26:19It's like finding someone that listens to that old stuff is
- 26:22very hard to find. So rare.
- 26:24It's like it's it doesn't get any better than that.
- 26:27That music was also played in my house growing up, but my dad
- 26:29played the accordion. And so when we were kids, we had
- 26:32the same kind of music that you're playing today playing
- 26:35throughout my house all the time.
- 26:36Except the only difference is, Brian, is that when you listen
- 26:39to it, it came out new. Hey, there is that, that is a
- 26:44dig on my age. So I know off your website, you
- 26:49mentioned in your events section that you're going down to
- 26:52Memphis in November. Can you tell us about that?
- 26:54Yeah. So that's probably one of the
- 26:56most exciting things that we have.
- 26:58We've we've recorded three CDs. The band has been together
- 27:02almost five years. It'll be five years in
- 27:04September. Mitchell and the Tennessee Trio,
- 27:05we're recording our 4th CD down in Memphis and that'll be at Sun
- 27:10Studios. Sun Records were.
- 27:12Really. That's awesome.
- 27:13Where Johnny Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, all of them have
- 27:16recorded Robertson, Fats Domino, all all those great artists,
- 27:21Charlie Rich and a lot of people that don't know this is that Sun
- 27:24Records was closed for quite some time and they reopened it
- 27:28in the mid 80s and they had the, the class of 55 go back there
- 27:32and do like a reunion. So Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis,
- 27:35Elvis or not Elvis, but did all that and they reopened it for a
- 27:38tourist and and put it as a National Monument if you will.
- 27:42But you can still go in there and record if you want.
- 27:45It's not a full up and running record company like I was back
- 27:49in the day. But the cool thing with us going
- 27:52down there is that they still have you stand in the same spots
- 27:57where everybody else stood in that room.
- 28:00Sam Phillips, that the the the owner and the founder of Sun
- 28:04Records, all the artists, the singer, the guitar player stood
- 28:08in the same spots where he thought the best sound was.
- 28:12So that's where that's. Where you get to stand.
- 28:15We'll literally be standing where all the legends were when
- 28:18Sam, before Sam Phillips passed away, he had five original
- 28:22microphones that he used in the recordings that he brought back
- 28:26to sun Records that are used on these recordings.
- 28:29So you may use a microphone that Johnny Cash used back in the
- 28:34day. So the nostalgia of all of that
- 28:37and you being there, it's got to be just thrilling.
- 28:40It's awesome. And then getting to that, is
- 28:43that when the studio shut down and they moved buildings?
- 28:46Yeah. From what I understand is that
- 28:48there were some other contractors and people that have
- 28:51bought the building or rented it out.
- 28:52From what I hear, that might have been like an auto mechanic
- 28:55or a laundromat that was in the building.
- 28:57They never changed anything. The, the tiles that you know,
- 29:00the sound tiles that are on the walls, on the ceilings, the
- 29:04floor tiling, literally the entire building is original to
- 29:08the day that he opened it. So if only the walls could talk.
- 29:11So when we're down there recording, we're recording
- 29:13literally with the same tiles that Johnny Cash and all these
- 29:17other ones recorded with 70 years ago.
- 29:20It's. That's so cool.
- 29:22It's about as vintage and authentic as you can get, yeah.
- 29:25Take lots of pictures. Get some video.
- 29:27Put it on the website. On the website for sure.
- 29:29So couple more things before we go.
- 29:31What advice would you give to an aspiring new musical artist?
- 29:34I would say to to definitely, if they're a singer to keep
- 29:39singing. Singing is awesome, but your
- 29:42vocal cords is a muscle. You know, if you don't use it,
- 29:45you lose it. And then as far as instrument is
- 29:49to, you know, you're going to play guitar to play an acoustic
- 29:52guitar guitar before you go to an electric just because you got
- 29:55steel strings that are thicker and harder to play on a, on a,
- 29:58an acoustic guitar. So you can build up your
- 30:01calluses on your fingers. So then when you go to an
- 30:03electric, it's a piece of cake. If you go to electric first your
- 30:07fingers don't get that built up, but then you go to an acoustic
- 30:09and it almost tears your fingers apart.
- 30:11That's why calluses are on all the guitar player fingers.
- 30:15Yep, and it just takes time, you know, to build those up.
- 30:18When I first started learning and playing guitar, it was not
- 30:21fun. It, it hurt.
- 30:23You know, there's when we, because we haven't done a lot of
- 30:26shows in the winter in the last couple of years.
- 30:29It's it's hard to get people to, to drive out in the winter.
- 30:32It's a pain hauling equipment in and out of venues when it's
- 30:35cold, you know, you got blizzards and whatnot and
- 30:38traveling to the venues. That was never a problem with
- 30:40Show Clear. There's never a Blizzard in
- 30:43Minnesota. In February.
- 30:44In February? Never, never, never.
- 30:49So do you want to take a moment, plug any event or show coming up
- 30:53that we can see you live? Yeah, I know locally we've been
- 30:56talking about Stiffens fast. Stiffens Fast.
- 31:00I think it's the Minnesota's oldest festival and it it's just
- 31:04a great, great time. Huge music tent, a lot of
- 31:07people, a lot of beer, a lot of burgers.
- 31:09Yep, the burgers are great, but a lot of great music.
- 31:11You got polka, you got country, you got rock'n'roll, little bit
- 31:14of everything. Yeah.
- 31:15Now you, I'm gonna, the way I'm gonna phrase this is you kind of
- 31:17open for Johnny Holman if you've been in the upper Midwest,
- 31:20Johnny Holmes has been around for 50 flipping years.
- 31:22Yep. And there's a huge, huge
- 31:23following. So I mean that just in and of
- 31:25itself, to open for him is kind of a kind of a big deal.
- 31:27Yes, there's been a three big bands that we've opened for that
- 31:30we've had the honor is Johnny Holmes.
- 31:32We've opened for him, Yeah, quite a few times at the McLeod
- 31:35County Fair, will be there again this year.
- 31:37We've opened for the White side walls.
- 31:39They've been around for years. And then one other performance
- 31:43we did a couple years ago was open for Frankie Ballard.
- 31:45He was a country musician, pretty well known back in the
- 31:502000s. I believe.
- 31:51Yeah, I think I heard of them. Yeah, our biggest thing coming
- 31:54up right now is, is the Sun, Sun Records.
- 31:56And we're doing 10 songs on that album, and it'll be all Sun
- 32:00record songs that he recorded back from 1955 through 1958
- 32:05before he left and went to Columbia Records.
- 32:07OK. Cool.
- 32:07And when can we expect that out that CD?
- 32:10Well, we're recording it in November, so if everything goes
- 32:13right, hopefully by the end of the year I would say.
- 32:15OK, great. I'm getting one.
- 32:17By going back to the authentic too, just to throw this in is
- 32:20the the recording equipment that they're using half of it is
- 32:23digital and digital is great. It's got, it's awesome, right?
- 32:27Stuff, you know, you're not wasting tape like it was back in
- 32:30the day where you were limited on takes.
- 32:32But the the mix is 5050. Half of it is digital, half of
- 32:36it is still the original or one of their pieces of the original
- 32:40analog mixtures that Sam Phillips used back in the day.
- 32:43Yeah. That's cool, so, and it has a
- 32:45different sound to it too. I mean, it does.
- 32:48There's something to be said about the old school music.
- 32:52I mean, when you play something on YouTube, something on a
- 32:55record, on vinyl, there's just something about that sound that
- 32:58you just don't get anymore. Right.
- 33:00I mean, I asked for a record player by five years ago for
- 33:02Christmas and it just, it just has such a different sound to
- 33:04it. Just it's phenomenal.
- 33:05Oh, did you get a record player for Christmas?
- 33:08Did. Well, that was awesome,
- 33:11Mitchell, thank you so much for hanging.
- 33:12Out Thank you. Thank you for having us a great
