- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17For Advent 2025 we are in a series called Brought to the
- 0:21Light, Advent for all who need it.
- 0:23This series is looking at the themes of Advent and how Jesus
- 0:26comes to us all. You can find more information
- 0:29about our church at fumccollingswood.org.
- 0:33Thanks for listening, Christmas. It's a time full of traditions,
- 0:46all right. Some of those traditions are,
- 0:48are shared by many within our society, right?
- 0:51Like the decorating of Christmas trees, the giving of gifts to
- 0:55friends and family. Anybody get a Christmas gift
- 1:00over the last week? I, I, I hope most of you did
- 1:05putting up lights outside right, to decorate our homes, but there
- 1:10are other traditions that that are more distinctive for their
- 1:14place within the church, right? The, the season of Advent and
- 1:20its wreath, the, the singing of Christmas carols like we're
- 1:23doing this morning or, or maybe a Christmas Eve worship service.
- 1:29And then there are the traditions that we have that
- 1:33exist within our own families, right?
- 1:35However large or small that may be, right?
- 1:38There's some traditions we have as a family that are just the
- 1:41six of us, but others that we share with others within our
- 1:45family. And so for us, we have certain
- 1:48holly China that we use from Thanksgiving up through
- 1:53Christmas, right? We, we give each of our kids one
- 1:57of their Christmas presents on Christmas Eve after we get home
- 2:02from worship, right? We found that opening one
- 2:05present on Christmas Eve helped our little ones actually be able
- 2:09to fall asleep on Christmas Eve when they were supposed to.
- 2:14And then the the boys always wake up with their stockings at
- 2:18the foot of their bed, right? And they're allowed to open
- 2:20those whenever they wake up in the morning.
- 2:24The rest of the present that waits until everyone's up and
- 2:28ready. But traditions matter, right?
- 2:33And they matter because they both help us to celebrate the
- 2:38holiday. And then over time, they become
- 2:42how we celebrate that holiday. And sometimes those traditions
- 2:48change or evolve, right? Because the circumstances of
- 2:51life change or because our needs or our family's needs evolve.
- 2:58Some of our traditions, like an Advent calendar, even help us to
- 3:02anticipate the coming of Christmas, right?
- 3:06Well, there are other traditions that help us extend that
- 3:09celebration, although I find that here in America we tend to
- 3:14be better at anticipating Christmas and and other holidays
- 3:19than we are at actually celebrating them and extending
- 3:23them or lingering within those. Those holidays.
- 3:29We tend to see Christmas, especially, I think, as a day,
- 3:33an event that happens when when I think it would be more helpful
- 3:37to actually see it as a season right within the church.
- 3:42It's traditionally been called Christmas Tide, right?
- 3:46December 21st, 25th being the first day of a season that
- 3:52stretched all the way until January 6th when Epiphany was
- 3:56celebrated. That's why this Sunday after
- 3:59Christmas is always a chance to gather and sing some of our
- 4:03favorite Christmas carols. Because Christmas isn't over
- 4:07yet. And I'd argue that that one of
- 4:10the ways we keep Christ in Christmas, as the saying goes,
- 4:14is by learning. By leaning into the season of
- 4:20Christmas, extending our celebration of what God has done
- 4:24in coming for us from the one day on December 25th through the
- 4:29whole season of Christmas tide. Because the reality is we need
- 4:36Christmas. Not just Christmas, but we need
- 4:39the whole liturgical calendar, right?
- 4:42Which begins each year with Advent.
- 4:45Or there are our calendars begin in January, but the church's
- 4:49calendar begins with Advent and it climaxes with with Easter and
- 4:55Pentecost. But we need these rhythms in our
- 5:01lives because we need the annual reminder that the story that God
- 5:08is telling is bigger than the story of our own lives, although
- 5:16that in no way implies that our lives are insignificant, right?
- 5:20But we need to be reminded over and over and over again that as
- 5:26Paul says in Galatians 4, Galatians 4, he says it this way
- 5:32beginning in verse 4. But when the right time came,
- 5:38God sent his son, born of a woman, subject to the law.
- 5:43God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law,
- 5:49so that he could adopt us as his very own children.
- 5:54And because we are His children, God has sent the Spirit of His
- 5:58Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out ABBA Father, now
- 6:05you are no longer a slave, but God's own child.
- 6:10And since you are His child, God has made you His heir.
- 6:17This is the story that is to shape our lives, right?
- 6:25The incarnation. It wasn't just an it wasn't just
- 6:28an innovation to overcome a, a plot twist that God somehow
- 6:34didn't see coming. The incarnation, it was the
- 6:36culmination of all that God was doing from the very beginning,
- 6:41from the moment creation started, God's plan was always
- 6:46to come. It was always to come and walk
- 6:50with His people. We see it in the Garden.
- 6:53We see it in the Garden City at the end of the Book of
- 6:56Revelation. But because humanity enslaved
- 7:00ourselves to sin, God had to set us free so that he could adopt
- 7:06us as his children bring us into the family of God.
- 7:12And God gives us his very Spirit, the Holy Spirit, the the
- 7:17Spirit of Truth, the Comforter, to dwell not just with us, but
- 7:24within us, to form us into children who look like Him.
- 7:30Adopted, yes, but also reborn by his Spirit.
- 7:38So we need Christmas because we need to remember that our
- 7:45salvation and our redemption, they're, they're not just Easter
- 7:49messages, right? They're not just the, the
- 7:52stories we tell or the messages we proclaim during Holy Week to
- 7:58fix that unexpected problem that God had to deal with.
- 8:03It's the story that God has been telling from the very beginning,
- 8:10the story we are called not just to retell over and over again,
- 8:15but the story that we're called to inhabit, to live in, and to
- 8:22live out of. And so I want to encourage you
- 8:27this morning on this fourth day of Christmas, you don't descend
- 8:34anybody for calling birds, but I want to encourage you to keep
- 8:39the party going, right? To continue to celebrate the the
- 8:45season of Christmas, to build in some traditions that don't take
- 8:50place just on the 24th and the 25th, maybe the 26th.
- 8:57When our boys were younger, we had a chain of stockings that we
- 9:01would hang up. There are about four inches
- 9:04tall. They weren't stockings for
- 9:07Christmas morning. They were for the rest of the
- 9:11days of Christmas. Each one would contain a little
- 9:13slip of paper that would tell us what that day's celebration of
- 9:17Christmas was going to look like It it might have been a
- 9:20Christmas movie with a cup of cocoa or decorating gingerbread
- 9:25houses or or maybe another small gift.
- 9:29The point was we continued to live in the celebration of
- 9:34Christmas. As the boys have gotten older,
- 9:38we've gotten away from that a little bit.
- 9:40But Megan and I were just talking last night about how we
- 9:43want to keep living into that, even though it might look
- 9:46different at 171513 and 11 than it did at 753 and 1.
- 9:56But I want to invite you, call you to extend your Christmas
- 10:02celebration, not just to anticipate it on the front end,
- 10:07but to lean into it, to live into it, because it's good news
- 10:12that's worth celebrating. And that good news is that at
- 10:17just the right time, God came to us so that he could make us his
- 10:25children. Would you pray with me, God?
- 10:32We are so grateful that you came to us and for us, that you came
- 10:40to set us free so that you could make us your children.
- 10:47We thank you, God, that that Christmas is not just a day to
- 10:52be celebrated, it's a season to be lived in.
- 11:00Well, God, it doesn't even just end with those 12 days of
- 11:04Christmas. It's a story that we're called
- 11:08to live in day by day, that from the very beginning you desired
- 11:16to dwell with us so that we could be your people and you
- 11:20could be our God. And one day you're going to come
- 11:23and make that the reality that you always intended for it to
- 11:27be, and you're going to wipe away sin and death forever.
- 11:35God, we long for that day. But until we get there, until
- 11:41you come again and all of your glory, would you help us?
- 11:48Would you help us to live out of the bigger story that you're
- 11:52writing across history? Would you help us to find our
- 11:56place within that story? Because you, you've created us
- 12:00and you've redeemed us and our lives matter.
- 12:03Our lives contribute to that story that you were writing even
- 12:08now. So would you help us to live in
- 12:13the season of Christmas and to learn from you what it means to
- 12:19go to someone because you love them?
- 12:25We pray all this Jesus, in your name, Amen.
