- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I am Lucas, and this is Luna. Luna: Hi everyone. We are so glad you are here. It feels good to be back at the mic. Lucas: Last episode we talked about making tea. You learned how to brew it slowly. Luna: Yes. And before that, we looked at frying and stirring pots. Cooking is a big part of life. Lucas: It really is. Today we want to talk about two other very common ways to cook food. Luna: Oh? What are they? Are they new words? Lucas: They are simple but very useful. The first word is 'kukus'. Can you say that? Luna: Kukus. Is that like steaming something? Lucas: Exactly. 'Kukus' means to steam. It is when you cook food with hot vapor. Luna: I love steamed food. It is healthy. So if I cook rice this way... Lucas: You can say 'nasi kukus'. That means steamed rice. Let us try that phrase together. Luna: Okay. Saya suka makan nasi kukus. Lucas: Perfect. 'Saya suka makan nasi kukus.' You like to eat steamed rice. Luna: It sounds delicious. I can imagine the smell of fresh rice. Lucas: Let us break it down. 'Saya' is I. 'Suka' is like. 'Makan' is eat. 'Nasi' is rice. 'Kukus' is steam. Luna: So the structure is simple. Subject, verb, object, and the cooking method. Lucas: Yes. And you can use it for many things. Fish, vegetables, dumplings. All can be 'dikukus'. Luna: Wait, did you say 'dikukus'? Is that different from 'kukus'? Lucas: Good catch. 'Kukus' is the base verb. When something is being steamed, we add 'di-' to the front. Luna: So 'dikukus' means 'being steamed' or 'steamed'. Lucas: Correct. For example, 'Ikan itu sedang dikukus.' The fish is currently being steamed. Luna: Let me try that. Ikan itu sedang dikukus. Lucas: Excellent. Your pronunciation is very clear. 'Ikan' is fish. 'Sedang' means currently or in progress. Luna: I see. So I can describe what is happening right now in the kitchen. Lucas: Exactly. Now, let us move to our second word. This one is also very popular. Luna: Is it another cooking method? I am ready for more. Lucas: Yes. The word is 'panggang'. Do you know this one? Luna: Panggang. I think I have heard this. Is it grilling? Lucas: Spot on. 'Panggang' means to grill or roast. It uses direct heat, like fire or coals. Luna: Oh, I love grilled food. Especially chicken. It has such a nice smoky taste. Lucas: It does. In Malaysia and Indonesia, grilled chicken is a classic street food. Luna: Really? I want to learn how to order it. How do we say grilled chicken? Lucas: We can say 'ayam panggang'. 'Ayam' is chicken. 'Panggang' is grilled. Luna: Okay. Mari kita panggang ayam. Lucas: Nice. 'Mari kita panggang ayam.' Let us grill some chicken. Luna: That sounds like a fun plan. Who wants to help me? Lucas: I will help. But we need to make sure the meat is cooked well. Luna: Of course. Safety first. So if I eat grilled meat, I can say... Lucas: You can say 'Daging panggang sangat sedap.' Grilled meat is very delicious. Luna: Let me repeat that. Daging panggang sangat sedap. Lucas: Perfect. 'Daging' is meat. 'Sangat' is very. 'Sedap' is delicious. Luna: I am getting hungry just saying these words. Steamed rice and grilled chicken. Lucas: It is a great combination. Simple, tasty, and easy to remember. 'Ikan itu sedang dikukus'? Luna: Ikan itu sedang dikukus. That fish is being steamed. Lucas: Great. And for the grilling part? 'Mari kita panggang ayam'? Luna: Mari kita panggang ayam. Let us grill chicken. Lucas: And finally? 'Daging panggang sangat sedap'? Luna: Daging panggang sangat sedap. Grilled meat is very delicious. Lucas: You did it. Those four phrases are now yours.
