- 0:57Speaker 2: also TV host on the Kraken Hockey Network as we'll
- 0:59Speaker 2: dive into the win over the Washington Capitals back on Sunday. Additionally,
- 1:05Speaker 2: depth scoring, Berkeley Catton also at this point of the season,
- 1:09Speaker 2: plus the context behind a 4-2 start. with the Inferness
- 1:14Speaker 2: coming up in just a bit. The Kraken entering a
- 1:17Speaker 2: game against the Washington Capitals Sunday were looking to keep
- 1:20Speaker 2: a good thing going, but they hadn't had a win
- 1:22Speaker 2: in that building since January of 2024 and facing a
- 1:27Speaker 2: Washington team that had won three of their first four games.
- 1:31Speaker 2: The Kraken were looking to get to work early while
- 1:34Speaker 2: holding off a household name to NHL history.
- 1:46Speaker 4: It's done. The shot from just inside the blue line.
- 1:50Speaker 4: It went off the left pad of Hudson, right to
- 1:53Speaker 4: Capo Caco. And his second goal of the season puts
- 1:57Speaker 4: the Kraken on top. 1-0, 1354 to play in the first.
- 2:02Speaker 5: Well, Seattle grabbing some momentum off of two successful penalty
- 2:05Speaker 5: kills there. They get going at the offensive end of
- 2:07Speaker 5: the ice. Vince Dunn with a quick wrister on net
- 2:10Speaker 5: that Thompson has difficulty controlling the rebound on. It goes
- 2:13Speaker 5: right to Capocacco on that right side. He puts it
- 2:16Speaker 5: behind him.
- 2:16Speaker 6: 1-0 Seattle.
- 2:17Speaker 3: HL's all-time leading.
- 2:19Speaker 7: Goal scorer gets it in front, and he scores. Alex Ovechkin,
- 2:25Speaker 7: his first goal of the season, his 930th. of his
- 2:31Speaker 7: illustrious National Hockey League career. And the Capitals go back
- 2:35Speaker 7: to back to take a 2-1 lead.
- 2:37Speaker 5: 15 seconds to go.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Stevenson, right circle, back door on the doorstep. Eberle scores!
- 2:46Speaker 4: Chandler Stevenson, right circle, sends a pass. Through the bottom
- 2:52Speaker 4: of the slot, Logan Thompson made the first save, but
- 2:56Speaker 4: Jordan Eberle, a couple of whacks in the Kraken, have
- 3:00Speaker 4: tied the game at two with 9.3 left in the first.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Just some excellent work along the boards by Chandler Stevenson.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Puts a great move on the Capitals player to go
- 3:10Speaker 5: from up high, back down low, and then finds Eberle
- 3:13Speaker 5: on the back door who gets a couple of whacks
- 3:15Speaker 5: at it. after a backhand pass from Stevenson to that
- 3:19Speaker 5: far post. It was the second attempt that goes past
- 3:22Speaker 5: Logan Thompson. This game's tied at two.
- 3:24Speaker 3: On the far side.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Martin Fervari.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Along the goal line.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Turnover out in front. Freddie Gaudreau scores! Freddie G's got
- 3:37Speaker 4: three goals his last two games, and the Seattle Kraken
- 3:41Speaker 4: regain the lead 3-2 with 6.36 to play here in
- 3:46Speaker 4: the second.
- 3:47Speaker 5: We talked about this a lot last game, puck pressure,
- 3:50Speaker 5: and that time that fourth line did exactly that below
- 3:53Speaker 5: the goal line down at the Capitals end of the ice,
- 3:55Speaker 5: and it was Freddie Goudreau out in front. waiting for
- 3:58Speaker 5: something to happen. That puck popped out right to him.
- 4:01Speaker 5: He made a beautiful move on Thompson to go from
- 4:03Speaker 5: forehand to backhand.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Slid it in past the post.
- 4:07Speaker 5: Kraken have the lead, 3-2.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Dernstrom throws it off the end boards there.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Bari comes in.
- 4:12Speaker 4: What a save to Kord on the rebound. As he
- 4:18Speaker 4: went down, he deflects it up and out of play.
- 4:23Speaker 4: And the Seattle Kraken preserve the 3-2 lead thanks to
- 4:27Speaker 4: Joey DeCore. Here's Montour, near side of neutral. Sends it
- 4:31Speaker 4: in for McCann, catching the pass. McCann cuts, shoots, scores!
- 4:38Speaker 4: Sharon McCann down the right side, cut back into the middle.
- 4:43Speaker 4: He used the capital defender as a screen and a
- 4:47Speaker 4: twisted wrister. In pass, Logan Thompson has Seattle back up
- 4:52Speaker 4: by one, four, three, with 5.27 to play in the third.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Well, Jared McKenna, who's a left-hand shot, comes down that
- 4:59Speaker 5: right side after getting a feed from Mackie Samuskiewicz. And
- 5:02Speaker 5: because he's on his off wing, he wants to load
- 5:04Speaker 5: that shot up. So he comes hard down that right side,
- 5:08Speaker 5: cuts to the middle, does exactly that, loads the shot up,
- 5:11Speaker 5: beats Logan Thompson, glove side, crack and take the lead
- 5:14Speaker 5: back 4-3.
- 5:14Speaker 4: There's a foot race for the puck, flipped out to center.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Winterton over the blue.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Line, scores!
- 5:24Speaker 4: Like a good neighbor, Ryan Winterton is there. A breakaway
- 5:30Speaker 4: with a 4-3 lead on his stick. It's now a
- 5:34Speaker 4: 5-3 Kraken game with 2.40 to go in the third.
- 5:39Speaker 5: Well, Ryan Winters didn't recognize him. What's going on? There
- 5:41Speaker 5: was a turnover deep in the Kraken end. He takes
- 5:43Speaker 5: off to the neutral zone, catches a flip pass, beating
- 5:47Speaker 5: Logan Thompson on that glove side again. He's got his
- 5:51Speaker 5: first goal of the season, Kraken up 5-3.
- 5:54Speaker 2: So the Kraken pass, the gut check, test in period three,
- 5:57Speaker 2: beating the Capitals 5-3. Jared McCann, Ryan Winterton breaking through.
- 6:02Speaker 2: A 3-3 tie with a pair of goals less than
- 6:04Speaker 2: three minutes apart. Late in regulation, McCann getting his second
- 6:09Speaker 2: of the season. Winterton capping that off on a breakaway.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Now with back-to-back multi-point games. Part of an offense that
- 6:16Speaker 2: has produced up and down the lineup. And whether or
- 6:19Speaker 2: not you want to believe that it's a true indication
- 6:22Speaker 2: of potential, facts are facts. The Kraken have scored 26 goals.
- 6:27Speaker 2: in their first six games. Before we get to Ian Furness,
- 6:30Speaker 2: here's more reaction after the win on Sunday from head
- 6:33Speaker 2: coach Lane Lambert, who met with the media.
- 6:35Speaker 6: We started off with a couple of huge penalty kills
- 6:37Speaker 6: right off the bat. Our goaltender played really well when
- 6:40Speaker 6: we needed him to, for sure. And, you know, I thought...
- 6:46Speaker 6: We stuck with it most of the night, certainly when
- 6:48Speaker 6: they scored their third goal early in the third period.
- 6:52Speaker 6: I like their response on the bench. I like the
- 6:53Speaker 6: fact that the guys that were on the ice that
- 6:56Speaker 6: got scored on just went right to the center ice
- 6:58Speaker 6: dot and lined up. In other words, don't take me
- 7:00Speaker 6: off the ice. That means a lot to me. So,
- 7:05Speaker 6: you know, I think there was some pretty good commitment
- 7:08Speaker 6: all over the place tonight. We had a lot of
- 7:09Speaker 6: good block shots and stuff like that. It was a
- 7:12Speaker 6: hard-fought game, and, you know, our guys... did a good
- 7:16Speaker 6: job of finding a way to win.
- 7:18Speaker 8: You mentioned the block shot. I mean, the whole forward
- 7:20Speaker 8: group seemed to be playing like the fourth line the
- 7:22Speaker 8: other night, just making a lot of small plays along
- 7:24Speaker 8: the way to get scoring chances. I mean, how important
- 7:26Speaker 8: is that against a team as big and.
- 7:28Speaker 6: Fast as the Caps? Yeah, well, that's kind of, you know,
- 7:31Speaker 6: I mean, at the end of the day, you know,
- 7:34Speaker 6: we want to continue to build and grow in terms
- 7:37Speaker 6: of our mentality, you know, how to win tight games. And,
- 7:40Speaker 6: you know, I thought we did a good job of
- 7:43Speaker 6: sort of puck supporting, support all over the ice and Certainly,
- 7:47Speaker 6: I thought for the most part we handled their size
- 7:50Speaker 6: pretty well. They made some plays and they had some opportunities,
- 7:53Speaker 6: and there's no question they have some good players over there,
- 7:55Speaker 6: but Joey was good when he needed to be. To
- 7:57Speaker 6: get a goal from every line as well, how positive
- 8:00Speaker 6: is that for this group as you guys keep building? Well,
- 8:02Speaker 6: we're getting some contributions from everybody, so that's nice to see.
- 8:06Speaker 6: It's one of the sort of ways that we want
- 8:09Speaker 6: our team to be made up, and we continue to
- 8:12Speaker 6: get contributions from everyone.
- 8:14Speaker 9: Basically four straight minutes of penalty kill time there in
- 8:17Speaker 9: the opening minutes. How big is that to come away
- 8:19Speaker 9: with no goals against there?
- 8:20Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, you could kind of call it a
- 8:25Speaker 6: turning point, even though there was still so much time left.
- 8:28Speaker 6: But if we give up one or two there, you know,
- 8:30Speaker 6: it's a tough hill to climb. So good job by
- 8:32Speaker 6: our guys on the kill.
- 8:34Speaker 9: Riker was the last to touch the puck on two
- 8:36Speaker 9: goals against tonight, but then he starts the play that
- 8:38Speaker 9: leads to the winning goal. What's the conversation like with him?
- 8:42Speaker 9: And I guess what do you see from his game
- 8:43Speaker 9: tonight in general?
- 8:44Speaker 6: Yeah, he's been playing really, really well for us, using
- 8:47Speaker 6: his legs, using his speed, making breakout plays. You know what?
- 8:53Speaker 6: When you're playing that much and you have the puck
- 8:55Speaker 6: on your stick that much, there is some possibilities that
- 8:59Speaker 6: you're going to make some errors at times. But, you know,
- 9:03Speaker 6: it just shows, you know, you shake it off, and
- 9:06Speaker 6: what a great block there at the end.
- 9:08Speaker 9: You've got to love the forecheck from Winterton and Myers
- 9:11Speaker 9: on the Freddie goal.
- 9:13Speaker 5: I do.
- 9:13Speaker 1: I do.
- 9:14Speaker 6: It's exactly what we talk about. And when I talk
- 9:19Speaker 6: about pressure and gaps and all that, we're talking about
- 9:22Speaker 6: 200 feet away from our net. So it starts there,
- 9:26Speaker 6: and that's what we've kind of been talking about all
- 9:27Speaker 6: year long. So it's kind of a nice little systems
- 9:30Speaker 6: clip for us.
- 9:31Speaker 8: Freddie's been scoring a lot of goals the last couple
- 9:33Speaker 8: of nights, but he also won a lot of face-offs tonight,
- 9:35Speaker 8: especially in the defensive end. How critical is that on
- 9:39Speaker 8: a night when Washington was winning a lot of draws otherwise?
- 9:42Speaker 6: Yeah, you know what, Freddie's, he's been playing well, and hey,
- 9:46Speaker 6: you know, his face-offs have been better this year, for sure,
- 9:52Speaker 6: you know, so it is critical for us to have
- 9:54Speaker 6: a guy like that, especially the right draw, I'm not
- 9:58Speaker 6: going to say every team in the league, but there's
- 10:00Speaker 6: a large majority of teams start their power play. on
- 10:03Speaker 6: that side, and having Freddie, you know, winning face-offs like
- 10:07Speaker 6: that really helps.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Game three of the trip coming up in the Kraken 2-0.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Off to a good start. Can they keep it going
- 10:13Speaker 2: here against Philly? The mayor of Maple Valley joining us
- 10:17Speaker 2: right now on Kraken this morning, Ian Furness, who will
- 10:20Speaker 2: be taking this one in just like me from the studio. Ian,
- 10:22Speaker 2: how would you like it if I told you at 4-2,
- 10:25Speaker 2: the Kraken right now are the best team in Seattle
- 10:30Speaker 2: on October 13th?
- 10:33Speaker 10: Well, that's true. The bar is set fairly low, but yeah,
- 10:37Speaker 10: it is very true.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Well, the Seahawks are trying to pick themselves up after Sunday,
- 10:42Speaker 2: and the Huskies, well, they're trying to really pick themselves
- 10:45Speaker 2: up out of a crater, it feels like.
- 10:47Speaker 3: The good news doesn't feel like.
- 10:48Speaker 2: That right now for a Kraken team that came off
- 10:50Speaker 2: a 5-3 win over the Capitals, but before I dive
- 10:53Speaker 2: into that, we're one day removed now from five years
- 10:56Speaker 2: ago on this date to the Kraken playing in their
- 10:58Speaker 2: first game in franchise history. It was a cathartic moment
- 11:02Speaker 2: where we had been waiting for so long for this
- 11:05Speaker 2: to happen. And I know you, you were all over
- 11:08Speaker 2: this on the coverage side from Sea Island, Georgia to
- 11:11Speaker 2: Board of Governors meetings all the way up until day
- 11:16Speaker 2: number one as well. So, I mean, I'll throw this
- 11:18Speaker 2: at you, Ian. Five years in, how do you define
- 11:22Speaker 2: what we recall about that time and everything leading up
- 11:26Speaker 2: to October 12th in Vegas? And number two, the impact
- 11:32Speaker 2: through five years of the Seattle Kraken?
- 11:34Speaker 10: Well, I would say it was strange in a lot
- 11:38Speaker 10: of ways, if you remember, because that first game in Vegas,
- 11:43Speaker 10: Johnny does it with JT on the radio. It was
- 11:46Speaker 10: a nationally televised game. Everett came down with COVID, as
- 11:51Speaker 10: did a couple people in the traveling party, if I'm
- 11:54Speaker 10: not mistaken.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Players also, and they were floating day of game. It
- 11:58Speaker 3: was ridiculously crazy.
- 12:00Speaker 10: It was surreal.
- 12:02Speaker 5: It was somewhat, I.
- 12:04Speaker 10: Don't know, it was just different. It was weird. We
- 12:08Speaker 10: were still in that weird world of the pandemic and
- 12:11Speaker 10: COVID and wearing masks in arenas and so forth that
- 12:15Speaker 10: we're supposed to be. You know, I wasn't at the
- 12:18Speaker 10: home opener, but I was on the trip because Everett
- 12:22Speaker 10: was sick. But that was weird because I'm by myself
- 12:26Speaker 10: and everyone's sequestered and It was just kind of an
- 12:30Speaker 10: odd year. Obviously, year two was awesome, and that was cool.
- 12:36Speaker 10: But yeah, five years in, things are great. I mean,
- 12:40Speaker 10: I know we want more wins and playoffs and all
- 12:43Speaker 10: those things, and I get that. I totally get that.
- 12:47Speaker 10: All of us do, right? We all want that. But
- 12:50Speaker 10: we have an NHL team here, which is really fun
- 12:53Speaker 10: and really cool. We waited a long time. to get
- 12:58Speaker 10: an NHL team in Seattle. And I'm, I'm, it's, we're
- 13:01Speaker 10: lucky to have it. And we're starting to see, I
- 13:04Speaker 10: think all these years later, you know, we're starting to
- 13:08Speaker 10: see some of the, some of the, like how hockey works,
- 13:11Speaker 10: like not everybody is Vegas, you know, like Vegas has
- 13:14Speaker 10: the finally get it. You know, they, they don't have
- 13:16Speaker 10: draft picks playing for them. You know, the way you
- 13:19Speaker 10: should do it is have draft picks playing for you,
- 13:21Speaker 10: but they draft them and it's two or three or
- 13:23Speaker 10: four years sometimes before we see guys. And so, Here
- 13:26Speaker 10: we are in year six and we're seeing, you know,
- 13:29Speaker 10: draft picks making an impact, taking that next step. Like
- 13:34Speaker 10: Daddy Veneers, certainly, but certainly a Berkeley Caton guy like that.
- 13:38Speaker 10: So let's hope it continues. But yeah, I mean, it's
- 13:42Speaker 10: great to have a team here. The winters were long,
- 13:46Speaker 10: harsh and gross with once the NBA left and very empty.
- 13:49Speaker 10: But that's not the case anymore.
- 13:51Speaker 2: And I still contend, too, that hockey just didn't begin
- 13:53Speaker 2: here on day one when the Kraken set the anchors down,
- 13:57Speaker 2: so to speak, because there is such a strong footprint
- 14:01Speaker 2: of WHL hockey. You and I have seen just how
- 14:04Speaker 2: many fans fill buildings in Kent. in Everett, in Spokane,
- 14:10Speaker 2: et cetera, et cetera. So this was kind of a
- 14:13Speaker 2: culmination of the seeds being planted and then everything just
- 14:17Speaker 2: erupting from a national standpoint, from an NHL standpoint. And
- 14:22Speaker 2: here we are into season five. I think if you
- 14:23Speaker 2: were to ask anybody, are they satisfied with just making
- 14:27Speaker 2: the playoffs once here in five years?
- 14:28Speaker 3: The answer is no.
- 14:29Speaker 2: As you touched on, this is not Vegas, and these
- 14:32Speaker 2: are the kind of growing pains that teams have to
- 14:35Speaker 2: endure along the way before they reach that next level
- 14:39Speaker 2: of being a repeated contender and reaching a true contender window.
- 14:44Speaker 2: And I'll agree, and I'll touch on this here in
- 14:46Speaker 2: a bit. Berkley Catton is certainly at the top of
- 14:48Speaker 2: this list as far as drafting, developing.
- 14:51Speaker 3: You can look at Matty Beneers.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Don't want to get too ahead of ourselves here, but
- 14:55Speaker 2: Jake O'Brien, and definitely within about roughly a year or
- 14:57Speaker 2: two years, chase right on that back end.
- 15:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:01Speaker 10: I mean, I would just, I would just add, you
- 15:02Speaker 10: look at it like Ryan Winterton's taken a step this year, right?
- 15:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:06Speaker 10: Which is, which is fun to see. And, you know,
- 15:08Speaker 10: out of iron and it's taken a step this year.
- 15:11Speaker 10: I mean, those are, those are fun little stories to
- 15:13Speaker 10: see these draft picks, you know, do their thing. And
- 15:16Speaker 10: I'm glad you mentioned the, the WHL markets and especially
- 15:18Speaker 10: not even the ones here. I mean, certainly there's a
- 15:21Speaker 10: hockey fan base, Mikey, with, with the silver chips and
- 15:24Speaker 10: the Thunderbirds and their history and, You know, Thunderbirds go
- 15:27Speaker 10: back even to the Breakers days, right? So there was
- 15:31Speaker 10: a history here. I think it's important to mention Spokane, Tri-Cities,
- 15:34Speaker 10: and Portland. Those are very important markets to the Kraken.
- 15:38Speaker 10: You know, we did the tour last year. We went
- 15:40Speaker 10: to Portland for a broadcast for the Kraken Hockey Network.
- 15:43Speaker 10: And then we went to Spokane, and Spokane was crazy.
- 15:47Speaker 10: We packed the place. People wearing Berkeley cat and jerseys.
- 15:50Speaker 10: Every time we touched the puck, they went nuts. It was...
- 15:54Speaker 10: And so... I'm hoping we see, you know, Mienten and
- 15:57Speaker 10: Brady getting a chance here at some point will be cool.
- 16:00Speaker 10: Jugna from Portland. I love seeing those connections. But, yeah,
- 16:03Speaker 10: I'm glad you mentioned those other markets.
- 16:06Speaker 2: At 4-2 right now, heading into a Tuesday game against
- 16:08Speaker 2: the Philadelphia Flyers, we're now seeing the view from roughly
- 16:12Speaker 2: 20,000 feet, Ian. Are the Kraken better than we thought they.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Were going to be?
- 16:18Speaker 2: For those who look at this team day in and
- 16:22Speaker 2: day out, I think you can gain a basic understanding
- 16:27Speaker 2: of what this start could mean when you have players
- 16:30Speaker 2: banding together who were bitter at how last season ended
- 16:35Speaker 2: and also that combined with young players who are getting
- 16:37Speaker 2: more and more opportunities. Katton is exhibit A. But yet
- 16:42Speaker 2: when you figure in beating the Flames twice. You beat
- 16:46Speaker 2: a Red Wings team that is right now in one.
- 16:50Speaker 2: You come out of this also with a pretty impressive
- 16:52Speaker 2: win over the Capitals, who are a tougher opponent, mind you,
- 16:55Speaker 2: and some are saying they could take that next step
- 16:57Speaker 2: here for this season. So to you, how do we
- 16:59Speaker 2: measure the projections versus reality of a 4-2 start?
- 17:05Speaker 10: Well, I think what it is is I think what
- 17:09Speaker 10: we've seen with Seattle so far is they are who
- 17:12Speaker 10: You know, we thought they were Dennis Green, right? Like,
- 17:16Speaker 10: they're not a cellar dweller like Calgary is or Detroit
- 17:22Speaker 10: may end up being. You know, they're not that. They
- 17:26Speaker 10: can play with good teams. They better bring their A
- 17:30Speaker 10: game when they play a team the caliber of Vegas
- 17:33Speaker 10: or somebody. You know, we saw that because they were
- 17:35Speaker 10: so bad in that home game against Vegas.
- 17:38Speaker 3: And who do you have Thursday? Tampa Bay.
- 17:41Speaker 10: Tampa Bay, right?
- 17:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 17:42Speaker 10: Like, we know what they are. They're probably a middle-of-the-pack
- 17:47Speaker 10: team that probably, unlike some middle-of-the-pack teams, will get better
- 17:50Speaker 10: as the year goes on, right? Because the young guys,
- 17:53Speaker 10: I didn't even mention Shane Wright. You know, those guys
- 17:55Speaker 10: will keep taking steps forward. So they'll get better. You know,
- 17:59Speaker 10: I think the Washington game has to be looked at, too,
- 18:04Speaker 10: with a pretty positive outlook. I mean, that's the team
- 18:08Speaker 10: in the Capitals. They had one regulation lost at home
- 18:12Speaker 10: since last January. So, like, I think it's January 31st.
- 18:16Speaker 10: They were like 13-1-2 in their last 16 at home
- 18:21Speaker 10: at the Capital One Center. That's a quality win, Mike.
- 18:25Speaker 10: I don't care if Duval was out or not. That's
- 18:27Speaker 10: a quality win. They need to beat Philadelphia. They've got
- 18:31Speaker 10: to beat Philadelphia. If you beat Philadelphia, which you should,
- 18:35Speaker 10: you're better than the Flyers. You just are. if you
- 18:38Speaker 10: beat Philadelphia tonight, well, then all of a sudden you've
- 18:41Speaker 10: got to, at worst, you're a 3-2 road trip. Hell,
- 18:45Speaker 10: I would have signed up for 2-2-1, to be honest
- 18:48Speaker 10: with you. You give me a 3-2 road trip and
- 18:51Speaker 10: the chance to go 4-5-0, but at least three wins,
- 18:55Speaker 10: six out of ten points, man, I'll take that every day.
- 18:59Speaker 10: That's pretty good.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Cracking right now, our third in the NHL, 4.3 goals
- 19:04Speaker 2: per game. We mentioned earlier that That depth has got
- 19:08Speaker 2: to be key here for this team. That was one
- 19:11Speaker 2: tenet pull I really pitched as far as how this
- 19:15Speaker 2: team can be successful for this season because there is
- 19:18Speaker 2: no true 1C. There really hasn't been. for the entire,
- 19:22Speaker 2: you know, five years of this franchise's existence. And, you know,
- 19:25Speaker 2: with all due respect, there hasn't been a 1C who
- 19:28Speaker 2: has kind of hit that 70, 80, 90 point mark
- 19:30Speaker 2: like other teams. But going back here to the depth
- 19:33Speaker 2: of this roster, there are only two forwards who have
- 19:35Speaker 2: yet to record a point on this team. One is
- 19:38Speaker 2: Jacob Alonson, who will be missing for quite a while.
- 19:41Speaker 2: And the other is Curtis Douglas, who basically is a specialist.
- 19:44Speaker 2: And we call that the guy who drops the gloves
- 19:47Speaker 2: in case something gets a little bit hairy. But Jared
- 19:49Speaker 2: McCain got seven points. Vince Dunn's got six. Capo Caco,
- 19:54Speaker 2: six points, six games. Chandler Stevenson, who had an absolutely
- 19:58Speaker 2: delicious pass to Jordan Eberle on Sunday, six points in
- 20:03Speaker 2: six games. Freddie Gaudreau's got four goals in six games.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Jordan Eberle, five in six. Ben Myers, five in four.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Ryan Winterton, five in four. I could keep going on,
- 20:13Speaker 2: but I know we got to get somewhere eventually here
- 20:15Speaker 2: on this. Within all of this is, of course, how
- 20:19Speaker 2: are your young players coming along? And Berkeley Catton right
- 20:23Speaker 2: now has got four points in six games. Roughly 15
- 20:27Speaker 2: minutes and three seconds of ice time per game. Whether
- 20:31Speaker 2: or not you might be a believer... of playing him
- 20:34Speaker 2: more up the lineup to maximize his production. I always, again,
- 20:40Speaker 2: issue an element of caution. Who are you having him
- 20:44Speaker 2: face when it comes to matchups here for line combinations?
- 20:47Speaker 2: And they've kind of hit that sweet spot here for him.
- 20:50Speaker 2: So given the fact he's also getting power play time,
- 20:53Speaker 2: how do you measure the impact of what Berkeley Catton
- 20:56Speaker 2: is getting with ice time versus what he could get
- 21:00Speaker 2: if you give him more to maybe help amplify this
- 21:02Speaker 2: offense further?
- 21:03Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, I think he's going to get caught.
- 21:06Speaker 10: I mean, the matchups might start changing because that line's
- 21:09Speaker 10: been so productive, right? So, I mean, if you kind
- 21:13Speaker 10: of look at it, they've been more productive than a
- 21:14Speaker 10: certain other line. So, I don't know. I love this
- 21:20Speaker 10: team doesn't have the aircraft carrier. We all know that.
- 21:23Speaker 10: We've talked about it on this show, you know, on
- 21:25Speaker 10: this podcast a bunch of times. You've talked about it,
- 21:29Speaker 10: I'm sure, with Fitz and Al. They don't have the
- 21:32Speaker 10: aircraft carrier. That's no secret. Everybody knows that. They don't
- 21:34Speaker 10: have the 50-goal guy. I don't even know if they
- 21:36Speaker 10: have a 40-goal guy. But when they had success in
- 21:40Speaker 10: year two, it's because everyone scored. They had a high
- 21:43Speaker 10: shooting percentage, but all four lines contributed. The fact that
- 21:47Speaker 10: your fourth line is putting up significant points, and shout
- 21:52Speaker 10: out to Freddie Gaudreau. I thought he was, if I'm
- 21:54Speaker 10: being honest, I was a little disappointed in what we
- 21:56Speaker 10: saw from Freddie Gaudreau last year. I thought there was
- 21:59Speaker 10: more more there for him. And, boy, the chemistry he
- 22:03Speaker 10: has with those two guys, with Wentz and Myers, and
- 22:08Speaker 10: what the chemistry... I'll tell you, the most exciting thing
- 22:10Speaker 10: if you're a Kraken fan, the chemistry you're seeing with Matty, Shane,
- 22:14Speaker 10: and Kapokaka. Like, you're seeing... Every win they've had, they've
- 22:20Speaker 10: had double digits in terms of guys with points. Now,
- 22:22Speaker 10: they've also won games with six goals, six goals... five
- 22:27Speaker 10: goals and six goals right so like when they win
- 22:30Speaker 10: they put up points the two losses they had they
- 22:33Speaker 10: had one goal in each of those right so um
- 22:36Speaker 10: or two i guess the biggest game is at 62
- 22:38Speaker 10: i can't remember now but the uh the point is
- 22:42Speaker 10: this when they do when they're humming everyone's contributing and
- 22:46Speaker 10: it might be two out of the four lines it
- 22:48Speaker 10: might be three out of the four lines it might
- 22:50Speaker 10: be all four lines it might be the d You know,
- 22:53Speaker 10: like the defense chipping in. You mentioned Vince Dunn's numbers
- 22:56Speaker 10: and what he's done so far. You know, Monty hasn't
- 22:58Speaker 10: really got going yet offensively.
- 23:00Speaker 1: He will.
- 23:01Speaker 10: He will for sure. I like that makeup. It's like,
- 23:06Speaker 10: what can we do? We don't have the 50-goal guy.
- 23:09Speaker 10: Everyone chips in, and it doesn't have to be the
- 23:10Speaker 10: same ones every night. You know, a lot of teams
- 23:12Speaker 10: have one line, maybe two. This team has, you know,
- 23:17Speaker 10: like I think Gidros did it the other day. He says, well,
- 23:20Speaker 10: you know, they call us, whatever, and he goes, fourth
- 23:22Speaker 10: liner or whatever. Yeah, that's not a fourth line. That's
- 23:25Speaker 10: the way they're playing right now. They might get fourth
- 23:29Speaker 10: line minutes, but that's not a fourth line per se. So,
- 23:34Speaker 10: I like the balance. I love the chemistry I'm seeing.
- 23:38Speaker 10: Maybe the Shane Wright rumors and, you know, the people
- 23:41Speaker 10: across the country that want to see him move or
- 23:43Speaker 10: say he's going to get moved, maybe that goes away
- 23:45Speaker 10: because I think you can see the chemistry he's got
- 23:49Speaker 10: with Berkley and with Capo. So, I like that a lot.
- 23:54Speaker 10: The top six, so to speak, if you want to
- 23:56Speaker 10: call them a top six, maybe make an adjustment up
- 23:59Speaker 10: there at some point. But seeing McCann get going yesterday
- 24:03Speaker 10: with that goal was beautiful. So, you know, let's keep
- 24:07Speaker 10: it rolling. Hopefully they can do that tonight.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Jared McCann scored at the right time.
- 24:10Speaker 2: And you're kind of wondering when he would eventually pop one.
- 24:14Speaker 2: His previous goal came when it was Richie Sexton time
- 24:16Speaker 2: against the Vegas Golden Knights. But that was certainly a
- 24:20Speaker 2: meaningful goal that eventually stood as a game winner.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Philadelphia here for this evening.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Ian, let's just say they're on the struggle bus like
- 24:26Speaker 2: Keanu Reeves in speed, but much faster than that. 0-5-2,
- 24:30Speaker 2: they can't score. Reportedly, they won't change their coach in
- 24:35Speaker 2: Rick Tockett. So I think to me, unless you win
- 24:38Speaker 2: this game 14-2, this won't change any perception about the
- 24:43Speaker 2: start that you're having and that you're beating up on
- 24:46Speaker 2: the bad teams or lesser teams. But I think right now,
- 24:50Speaker 2: where the Kraken are at, it's elevating their floor. So
- 24:54Speaker 2: I'm curious how they get out of the first period,
- 24:56Speaker 2: where it seems like Philly is already heading into desperate
- 25:00Speaker 2: times and it's only October 13th. So what's your key
- 25:03Speaker 2: for this evening?
- 25:04Speaker 10: Well, I think we just said, like, get off to
- 25:07Speaker 10: a good start. Like, if we're being honest, they haven't
- 25:09Speaker 10: got off to a good start yet this year. Like,
- 25:12Speaker 10: their first five minutes of almost every game have been,
- 25:14Speaker 10: you know, maybe longer. First five, seven, ten minutes have
- 25:18Speaker 10: been somewhat not good. Let's just say that, right? Yeah.
- 25:23Speaker 10: So don't give, you know, it's funny because I think
- 25:26Speaker 10: if I'm not mistaken, and correct me, I might be wrong,
- 25:29Speaker 10: and like games start blending together and I got another
- 25:32Speaker 10: job that I got to talk to other sports and
- 25:34Speaker 10: sometimes I forget, but it feels like, it feels like
- 25:37Speaker 10: one of their better starts to a first period might've
- 25:40Speaker 10: been Vegas. When Shane Wright and Ryan Winchester both had,
- 25:43Speaker 10: you know, graded a chance. Right.
- 25:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 25:45Speaker 10: Remember that?
- 25:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 25:46Speaker 10: And then we saw what happened in that game. So
- 25:48Speaker 10: I don't know, maybe they don't need to start fast,
- 25:49Speaker 10: but I, I think that that's kind of the thing
- 25:53Speaker 10: is be nice to get off to a good start,
- 25:56Speaker 10: not be dependent on your goaltender because Gruby and, and,
- 25:59Speaker 10: And Decord have been really good, especially early in games,
- 26:02Speaker 10: giving them the chance. And then you go, oh, there's
- 26:04Speaker 10: a goal by Burton Catton, or there's a goal here
- 26:06Speaker 10: or there, whatever it ends up being. And you're like, okay,
- 26:10Speaker 10: it's 1-0 or Title I and things like that. So
- 26:13Speaker 10: I think a good start, as you said, there's going
- 26:15Speaker 10: to be a push. Hawkins is going to be in
- 26:17Speaker 10: those guys' faces. They're going to come out hard early.
- 26:20Speaker 10: You can count on that. They're going to come out
- 26:23Speaker 10: hard early. So you've got to match that, weather the storm,
- 26:27Speaker 10: and then take it to them over the next, you know,
- 26:29Speaker 10: 55 minutes or so and find a way to win.
- 26:33Speaker 10: This is a game. You've got to have this one.
- 26:35Speaker 10: You know, you just do. And I know Philadelphia is
- 26:38Speaker 10: thinking the same thing. This is one of you to
- 26:40Speaker 10: crack if you need to get this one because the
- 26:42Speaker 10: four to two step is going to be a challenge.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Always has been. And for quite a while here, it
- 26:48Speaker 2: seems like it will be. All right, Ian, appreciate you, man.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Have a great show.
- 26:53Speaker 7: Thanks, Mikey.
- 26:54Speaker 3: All righty, and thank you very much.
- 26:55Speaker 2: The Kraken certainly would love to get off to a
- 26:58Speaker 2: fast start against the Philadelphia team that has still gone winless.
- 27:01Speaker 2: And about that offense, just 1.1 goals per game, ending
- 27:06Speaker 2: Sunday 31st of 32 teams in the league. Five-on-five goals,
- 27:10Speaker 2: they only had five, that tied for 30th in the league.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Star contrast to the Kraken, ending Sunday at 22 goals
- 27:18Speaker 2: at five-on-five, tied for first.
- 27:21Speaker 3: In the NHL.
- 27:22Speaker 2: One player to watch out for on the Kraken, Chandler Stephenson.
- 27:25Speaker 2: He comes into the game with a four-game road point streak,
- 27:28Speaker 2: also with points in four consecutive matchups against Philadelphia. Philadelphia's
- 27:33Speaker 2: last timeout, as we hinted, did not end well, losing
- 27:37Speaker 2: 4-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes at home. To follow 0-5
- 27:41Speaker 2: and 2 to begin the season, Joseph Wall had 20
- 27:44Speaker 2: saves on 24 shots. Christian Dvorak had the only goal
- 27:48Speaker 2: on the evening for the Flyers. The Kraken looking to
- 27:52Speaker 2: build on a 6-3-1 all-time record against the Flyers, including
- 27:57Speaker 2: three wins in their last four matchups. They'll get going
- 28:00Speaker 2: this evening, 4 p.m. Pacific time from Xfinity Mobile Arena.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Airtime coverage at 3.30. We certainly hope that you can
- 28:08Speaker 2: join us. Big thank you again to Ian Furness. And
- 28:11Speaker 2: for Kraken this morning, I'm Mike Benton. Have a happy
- 28:14Speaker 2: Tuesday and enjoy the game. You're home for the Kraken.
