- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:15isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at FindingGodAtWork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is wholehearted, becoming healthier Christians
- 0:31at work.
- 0:32And we want to get to the heart
- 0:34today, the word, the image, the metaphor from
- 0:37the Bible that this whole series title comes
- 0:40from, wholehearted.
- 0:41We have hearts.
- 0:42We have something hidden within us that gives
- 0:45us life and that determines the direction of
- 0:47our life.
- 0:49And I want to go to a key
- 0:50Bible passage right off the bat here that
- 0:53talks about the heart.
- 0:54Just like in English, where heart is a
- 0:57metaphor, it's a poetic term.
- 0:59It can refer both to our physical organ
- 1:01of the heart, but also to our hidden
- 1:04intentions and our desires and our feelings.
- 1:06There's a lot of layers to how words
- 1:08that are translated heart are used within the
- 1:11Bible, including within the Hebrew scriptures.
- 1:14But there's one specific aspect of the heart
- 1:16that I think is really helpful.
- 1:18And it's this idea that the heart can
- 1:20turn one way or another.
- 1:23So I want to go to a passage
- 1:24that highlights this particular aspect of the heart.
- 1:28This is from the fifth book of the
- 1:30Torah, which in English is called Deuteronomy.
- 1:33In Hebrew, its title literally just translates the
- 1:35words because it's the words that Moses said
- 1:38to the nation of Israel as his final
- 1:40teaching, his final words of wisdom and guidance
- 1:43to them.
- 1:44So it's kind of his farewell speech.
- 1:46And he emphasizes what's most important in this
- 1:49book of the Bible.
- 1:50Actually, the text we've been using from the
- 1:52Gospel of Luke, where we have that commandment
- 1:54quoted that you shall love the Lord your
- 1:56God with all your heart and with all
- 1:57your soul and with all your strength and
- 2:00with all your mind.
- 2:01That comes from this book of the Bible,
- 2:03from Moses's final words to the people of
- 2:06Israel, which makes sense.
- 2:07It's kind of this final summation of what's
- 2:08most important.
- 2:10So towards the end of this speech, he
- 2:11talks about two options, two paths or ways
- 2:15he calls them that are in front of
- 2:17the Israelite people, as they're about to enter
- 2:19into the Promised Land.
- 2:21And I'll start reading in verse 15.
- 2:24See, I have set before you today life
- 2:26and prosperity, death and adversity.
- 2:30If you obey the commandments of the Lord
- 2:32your God, that I am commanding you today
- 2:33by loving the Lord your God, walking in
- 2:36his ways and observing his commandments, decrees and
- 2:39ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous.
- 2:43And the Lord your God will bless you
- 2:44in the land that you were entering to
- 2:45possess.
- 2:47But if your heart turns away and you
- 2:48do not hear, but are led astray to
- 2:51bow down to other gods and serve them,
- 2:54I declare to you today that you shall
- 2:55certainly perish.
- 2:56You shall not live long in the land
- 2:58that you were crossing the Jordan to enter
- 3:00and possess.
- 3:03Okay, did you catch that little piece about
- 3:04the heart?
- 3:05You can see what Moses is doing here.
- 3:06He's laying out two options.
- 3:08He's saying there's life on one side, there's
- 3:10death on the other.
- 3:10It's like two paths diverging.
- 3:12You have to choose which one are you
- 3:13going to walk down.
- 3:15But what is the part of you that
- 3:17actually makes that choice?
- 3:18Verse 17, but if your heart turns away
- 3:21and you do not hear, but are led
- 3:24astray to bow down to other gods and
- 3:26serve them, and then he goes on to
- 3:28say that's the way of death.
- 3:30Okay, so it's your heart that's the hinge.
- 3:33It's your heart that turns one way or
- 3:37the other.
- 3:38In the next book of the Bible, the
- 3:39book of Joshua, there's like an echo or
- 3:42recurrence of this theme.
- 3:43At the end of Joshua's life, he's the
- 3:44successor to Moses.
- 3:46He gives a speech of his own, and
- 3:48he says incline your hearts to the Lord.
- 3:51Again, that's that idea of turning.
- 3:53Your heart is a hinge that can turn
- 3:55toward the Lord or away from him.
- 3:58Toward deeper union with him, deeper rest in
- 4:00him, deeper confidence that his way is the
- 4:03way of life, or turning to other authorities,
- 4:06other masters, other gods, and following the way
- 4:08that we know ultimately leads to destruction.
- 4:12Okay, so what is the significance of this
- 4:15capacity of the heart to turn, to choose?
- 4:19Well, philosophically, this is what is called the
- 4:21will.
- 4:22It's your capacity to determine something.
- 4:27Your capacity, in a moment, to make a
- 4:29choice to go one way or another, and
- 4:32one of the fundamental teachings of the Bible
- 4:34is that you have a will.
- 4:36In your heart, you have a deep capacity
- 4:39to choose, to make a decision.
- 4:43This is, in our generation, a controversial claim.
- 4:46There are many psychologists and physicists and others
- 4:49that would argue that what we experience as
- 4:52free will is just a series of physical
- 4:55and chemical reactions.
- 4:56It's an illusion.
- 4:57It's just something that happens to us.
- 5:00But the clear teaching of the Bible, again,
- 5:01reaffirmed by Jesus, is you can choose.
- 5:05You have a chooser inside of you.
- 5:07You have a heart.
- 5:08You have a capacity to go one way
- 5:10or the other.
- 5:12And this is really significant for our lives
- 5:14at work.
- 5:16I want to focus particularly on this idea
- 5:17of agency, the idea that you can take
- 5:19responsibility.
- 5:20You can make choices that make a difference
- 5:22in the real world.
- 5:24So one way I want to think about
- 5:25it is kind of two extremes, and we
- 5:28can think about this as the extreme of
- 5:30I will get my way, or the other
- 5:33extreme of I give up.
- 5:35So on one extreme, there's the idea that
- 5:37I will get my way, a very willful
- 5:39way of thinking.
- 5:41Somebody who thinks I'm in charge, I'm in
- 5:43control, I should run the universe, I should
- 5:46get what I want.
- 5:48And if you've ever interacted with a person
- 5:49like that at work or anywhere else, you
- 5:51know it's not very pleasant that a willful
- 5:53person tends to be very full of themselves
- 5:56and arrogant and unable to adapt to changes,
- 6:00sometimes incredibly angry.
- 6:02And this kind of attitude is rebuked by
- 6:04Scripture.
- 6:05So going to the New Testament of the
- 6:07letter of James, the brother of Jesus, he
- 6:10says, this is in chapter 4 verse 13,
- 6:13Now listen, you who say today or tomorrow,
- 6:15we will go to this or that city,
- 6:16spend a year there, carry on business and
- 6:18make money.
- 6:19Why?
- 6:20You do not even know what will happen
- 6:21tomorrow.
- 6:22What is your life?
- 6:24You are a mist that appears for a
- 6:25little while and then vanishes.
- 6:28Instead, you ought to say, if it is
- 6:29the Lord's will, we will live and do
- 6:32this or that.
- 6:33As it is, you boast in your arrogant
- 6:34schemes, all such boasting is evil.
- 6:39Okay, whoa, so James is not holding back.
- 6:41He's saying that kind of arrogant boasting that
- 6:43I'm gonna have my way, I know what's
- 6:45gonna happen in the future, it's evil.
- 6:47Now why is it evil?
- 6:48Well, because it's usurping the place of God.
- 6:50It's saying, I should have my way always,
- 6:53I should be like God.
- 6:55And the reality is, God is God and
- 6:57we're not.
- 6:57We don't control everything.
- 6:59And whenever something happens in life that reminds
- 7:01us that we don't control everything, we come
- 7:03up against this reality.
- 7:05We come up against our own finitude, our
- 7:07limitations, the fact that we can't control reality.
- 7:10And so having a humble posture of recognizing,
- 7:13God is God and I'm not, I don't
- 7:14control reality, it's really important.
- 7:16That's a clear teaching repeated again and again
- 7:18in the Bible.
- 7:20But at the other extreme, you could kind
- 7:22of try and have this humility that then
- 7:25extends even to a kind of passivity, and
- 7:27I give up.
- 7:31And A sense that everything happens to you
- 7:35in life.
- 7:36There's no you that can take action and
- 7:38solve problems or meet goals.
- 7:40There's a psychologist named Nicola Taylor.
- 7:42She has a study about this, the idea
- 7:44of, is your locus of control inside of
- 7:46you where you can take responsibility?
- 7:48Or is it outside of you, external to
- 7:50you?
- 7:51And she says this to describe that external
- 7:53more helpless attitude.
- 7:55She says, Now
- 8:23this attitude, while extreme, comes up in the
- 8:27workplace all the time, whenever something bad happens
- 8:30at work, and our response is, oh my
- 8:32gosh, I can't believe that happened.
- 8:34There's nothing I can do about it.
- 8:36So let me give an example.
- 8:37I once had a manager and she had
- 8:39many strengths, but she also had this habit
- 8:41of complaining about her colleagues.
- 8:44So sometimes somebody would do something that she
- 8:46wouldn't like, and she would just kind of
- 8:48roll her eyes and say like, ah, why
- 8:49did they do that?
- 8:51And I get like, you know, sometimes you
- 8:52need to vent, sometimes you need to find
- 8:53somebody, it's probably not best to vent at
- 8:56your workplace, about colleagues at your workplace, maybe
- 8:57find a different environment with a friend where
- 8:59you can process difficult emotions.
- 9:02But what struck me is sometimes she would
- 9:04say, ah, why did they do that?
- 9:06And then just move on without ever asking
- 9:08them to do it differently, without ever confronting
- 9:10them or explaining why I was problematic.
- 9:12And I just thought like, okay, yeah, you
- 9:14can't control the other person's behavior, that's true,
- 9:17but you can control whether you confront that
- 9:19person, you can control how you communicate with
- 9:22them, you can ask for a change.
- 9:24And it seems like this particular manager had
- 9:25a high capacity for complaining, but a low
- 9:28capacity for confronting.
- 9:31Because that's what we can do in a
- 9:33given situation, is we can confront with courage
- 9:37whatever it is possible for us to do.
- 9:39So somebody else does something we don't like,
- 9:41is it possible for us to talk to
- 9:43them about that?
- 9:44We lose funding.
- 9:45Is it possible for us to pursue other
- 9:46sources of funding?
- 9:48We are short staffed.
- 9:50Is it possible for us to creatively triage
- 9:52what tasks are most important and do what
- 9:55matters most, right?
- 9:55Like, in any difficult circumstance it is still
- 9:58possible for you to do something.
- 10:00You still have agency, you still have will.
- 10:03That's the teaching of Scripture, that you have
- 10:04a heart, you have a will, you have
- 10:06a chooser, there's still room for you to
- 10:09do something that counts.
- 10:11So what's the healthy version?
- 10:13What's the place that's kind of not at
- 10:15this one extreme of the arrogant, I will
- 10:18get my way, nor the other extreme of
- 10:20the helpless external locus of control I give
- 10:22up.
- 10:23Well psychologists call the the healthier space an
- 10:26internal locus of control.
- 10:28But I think we can layer on top
- 10:29of that what we know from the Scriptures,
- 10:31that God is in control and He's the
- 10:33one who's going to help us.
- 10:35So I want to go to the Book
- 10:37of Common Prayer, again this is the Anglican
- 10:38Prayer Book.
- 10:40I'm using the edition from 1979 for this
- 10:42particular example.
- 10:44When an infant is baptized, and that's a
- 10:46whole conversation, if that's a tripwire for you,
- 10:49you can contact me individually, we can talk
- 10:51about it, but just we'll start there.
- 10:54When an infant is baptized, they have often
- 10:57parents and God parents who will take vows
- 11:00on the child's behalf, who will say, I'm
- 11:03making a promise to see to it that
- 11:05this child comes to know Jesus in as
- 11:07much as that's possible.
- 11:09And so the priest who's presiding over the
- 11:10baptism asks this question, he says, will you
- 11:13be responsible for seeing that the child you
- 11:15present is brought up in the Christian faith
- 11:18and life?
- 11:20And then the parents and God parents respond,
- 11:22I will with God's help.
- 11:26That's the healthy response.
- 11:28It's not I'll have my way, it's not
- 11:30I give up, it's I will with God's
- 11:34help.
- 11:35And that's what leads us into responding to
- 11:38the challenges in our workplaces with other people
- 11:40in a healthy way.
- 11:41I will with God's help.
- 11:44A prayer that really beautifully conveys this attitude,
- 11:47and I think a healthy way, is the
- 11:49serenity prayer.
- 11:50This is often common in 12-step addiction
- 11:52recovery groups.
- 11:53It was originally given by Reinhold Niebuhr in
- 11:55a sermon in 1943, and I used to
- 11:58dislike this prayer because it uses the word
- 11:59serenity, which for whatever reason I'm like, the
- 12:01word serenity isn't in the Bible.
- 12:02Well, that's just because it's like a more
- 12:04contemporary word.
- 12:05If you look at the essence of the
- 12:06prayer, it's actually quite profound.
- 12:07The prayer goes like this, God grant me
- 12:10the serenity to accept the things I cannot
- 12:12change, the courage to change the things I
- 12:15can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
- 12:20Isn't that beautiful?
- 12:21We can have a sense of releasing our
- 12:24need to control the universe.
- 12:25God is God and I'm not.
- 12:27I cannot control what my boss does, what
- 12:30my co-workers or clients do, exactly how
- 12:32much money comes in.
- 12:34I need serenity to accept that, but I
- 12:36also need the courage to change the things
- 12:39I can, to figure out how I'm going
- 12:41to interact with my colleagues or with my
- 12:42boss or with my clients, to figure out
- 12:44how I'm going to manage the money details
- 12:46that I'm responsible for, and then I need
- 12:49wisdom from God to know the difference between
- 12:50those things, and God will give me that
- 12:52wisdom if I ask for it.
- 12:54I will with God's help.
- 12:58Now we see an even fuller application of
- 13:00this teaching when we get to Jesus's words
- 13:03about taking up your cross.
- 13:06This is in Luke chapter nine, starting in
- 13:08verse 23.
- 13:10Then Jesus said to all, If anyone would
- 13:13come after me, they must deny themselves and
- 13:16take up their cross daily and follow me,
- 13:19for whoever wants to save their life will
- 13:21lose it, but whoever loses their life for
- 13:24me will save it.
- 13:27You see how Jesus is doing his own
- 13:28Deuteronomy 30 here?
- 13:30He's saying there's two options, right?
- 13:32You can try and save your life, but
- 13:34you'll end up losing it, or you can
- 13:36lose your life for my sake and you
- 13:38will save it.
- 13:40Key detail here, Jesus does not say, Oh,
- 13:42you have to bear your cross daily.
- 13:45He says, take up your cross daily.
- 13:48You can choose.
- 13:49You can say, I will with God's help.
- 13:52And what does it mean to take up
- 13:54our cross daily, to embrace the way of
- 13:56Jesus, the way of sacrifice and love?
- 13:58Well, in our workplaces, it often means embracing
- 14:01that healthy attitude of, as we face various
- 14:04challenges, to refuse to succumb to the helplessness
- 14:08of an external locus of control, and to
- 14:10refuse to assume the arrogance of always insisting
- 14:13on having our own way.
- 14:15But instead, to occupy that middle space where
- 14:17we say, I will with God's help.
- 14:21And trust that as we do that, as
- 14:22followers of Jesus, that Jesus will apply his
- 14:26grace and goodness to every situation, that he
- 14:29will save us, that he will give us
- 14:31his life.
- 14:35Lord Jesus, thank you for this teaching on
- 14:36the heart.
- 14:38Pray that you would soften our hearts.
- 14:40You give us a capacity to be open
- 14:42to you, to turn our hearts towards you,
- 14:45to enter into deeper union with you.
- 14:48Do your work in us as we do
- 14:50our work with you.
- 14:57Thanks for listening.
