- 1:47[SPEAKER_02]: Just an example of what you get when you subscribe to the Kyle Meredith with podcast.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_02]: And that's me Kyle Merit today catching up with Ian Asteberry of the cult, because the man's been the voice behind everything from she sells sanctuary to fire woman terrain, which makes him either one of the last true rock mystics or maybe just the guy who won't stop yelling about horses and flames.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_02]: Either way, the cold has been around since the early 80s.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_02]: They've been riding that line between Goth and Hardrock.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_02]: Ian's also dabbled outside of the band.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_02]: You remember when he was fronting the the resurrected doors, the doors of the 21st century?
- 2:24[SPEAKER_02]: Now we get to talk about him with the tour.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_02]: He's touring both the
- 2:29[SPEAKER_02]: the cults and their short-lived precursor death cults on the new paradise now tour.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_02]: Ian's going to dig into the Orwellian echoes of 1983 when the death cult were out there.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_02]: Why revisiting death cult feels like a zero point reset and how it recharges his artistic DNA.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_02]: He's also going to reflect on being an outlier in the mainstream.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_02]: the contradictions of fame, his frustrations with the loss of danger in modern rock, and along the way touch on performing with tool, his martial arts discipline, memories of live aid, and the enduring mission of the gathering the tribes.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_02]: All that a more as we talk about touring the cold and death cults on the paradise now tour.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_02]: It's Kyle Meredith with Ian asked Barry of the cult.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_02]: Are you in?
- 3:19[SPEAKER_02]: Gonna be talking to you again.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_02]: I think this is our third round with each other.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_02]: It's been a few years though.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's been a long time.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_02]: You've been okay?
- 3:27[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_02]: That's subjective.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_02]: That's subjective for all of us.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_02]: It's a loaded question anytime anybody asks.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's, yeah.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: I was okay five minutes ago and in two minutes,
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: little transparency, we're 20 days, 28 days out from a tour.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_01]: So it's, we're being as productive as possible.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: I'll try and need some positive language.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: That's shit.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: We got shit, low gun on.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: Colts in a Renaissance right now.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: No, I don't know.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: Where everywhere.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_02]: There's several shows.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, there's always.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like, like, I see, I hear you all pop up and shows a lot.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: but especially in the stuff that you've been popping up in lately, like that must be nice to get that kind of attention when you don't even have to try.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: Well, it's, yeah.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: Well, severance, euphoria, even happy Gilmour two, few of the shows doing Rick podcast.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they just throw a dart, a dart board.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: There's obviously something a frequency that they're picking up on.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_01]: There's always been there with us.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: I've always been the outlier the contradiction.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: I've been called everything on the design.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_01]: From LibTard to some of you said, my last death coper form is that you said, absolute weapon.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, that's a deformer.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I read that and I was like, whoa.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_02]: That's that's pretty hot that that's nobody's ever said anything like an absolute weapon I was like well, that's you can put that on a business car that'll work you can put that on anything Yeah, we'll work you can put that on your it's a new t-shirt right the new tour t-shirt I wouldn't I guess I've been dangerous on it.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_01]: No that much of a narcissist
- 5:23[SPEAKER_01]: No, yeah, just a dude called Love Music, like you grew up in music.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: Love music.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's all about music.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_02]: Even when you're talking to someone else saying it, you know, it takes the weight off at least.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's not you.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_02]: You're not giving yourself a nickname by any means.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_02]: Someone's bestowed this upon you.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's a compliment.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: It is a compliment and you can enjoy that for a favorite for
- 5:53[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I love hearing it pop up.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_02]: I heard it and happy I heard it in severance and it's always being such a big fan of the music that you've made over the years.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's always a high point in any kind of show.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_02]: But jumping back to what you said a minute ago, 28 days out.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, here you are back to the fact of the states, with two bands at once.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the cult and death cults at once.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_02]: It's not the first time that you've you've put those clothes back on for the death cold, but but why now?
- 6:24[SPEAKER_02]: Why why you can't what is it about this band that keeps pulling you back to it's especially because it was such a short moment in time, right?
- 6:31[SPEAKER_02]: So we're talking like more less like 82, 83, 81.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: the best call was actually 83.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: You're just one year.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: Probably more like eight months.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: And here you are again.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's I feel if we're going to get all all well again and this token.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_01]: I feel that 1984 was a zero point.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: It was the end of the 20th century.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_01]: It was evident.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_01]: We were moving into this.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Ridley Scott dropped his commercial for the Olympics.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_02]: Remember that commercial I do, that was, I mean, iconic with the army, I don't know what you call that an army, but yeah.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was kind of almost an extension of the war, which was only in 1979, 80-ish Roger Waters had very eloquently with, was it the director Alan Parker?
- 7:22[SPEAKER_01]: They put the war movie together.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: And like looking at where we are, where we've evolved who post industrial revolution, post the Kant and Jenny.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, here we are now with MTV, here we are, with, you know, technologies coming into our creeping into our just nasantly computers.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know about you when I was a kid on what school we had to do the North and Zeros on a card.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, if you wanted to code, that was your coding.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_01]: You get a card, it had all notes and zeros and ones.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, notes and ones.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: And then you had to kind of feel like black them out so the computer would read it so that way.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's the acceleration of the human experience.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_01]: evolution, I guess.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: But I feel that that period, especially when McLaren pistols, what was happening in New York, it was almost like the aquarium age with the 60s was one tributary.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: And then there was another one with technology coming in.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_01]: We were going to the moon.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_01]: Now we're talking about going to Mars.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_01]: It transcends your cognitive ability to process this stuff.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: So, instinctively, I always work intuitively, and then afterwards ask, why?
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: How?
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going, uh, got feeling?
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: Just instinct.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's so interesting to hear you.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, to say that because because, you know, as I was going back and listening to those two EPs that you all did that year, of course, became the album and thinking about the world of time.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Cold War era.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: We were there in the Cold War.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: We were going to Berlin at that time.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_01]: When the first concert's death cult did, and we did Billy and I did was in Berlin.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: And we had to go through Marion Dawn, we had to go through the gate, we had to go through, you had to stay on a single freeway to go from West Germany into Berlin, and then you were met by East German soldiers and then Russian soldiers.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_01]: And then we actually recorded it at Hansel Studio, we recorded that was later we did Resurrection Joe at Hansel Studio, right next to the war, but the first concept was at the loft, and Nolan Dorfplatz,
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: which is really Monica Doring, very, very famous Berlin entrepreneur, you know, advocate of culture and we played with her for her in her club, just quite seminal.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_01]: But seeing that, I mean, seeing D symbol, the piece symbol was very prominent.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: There was a lot of people on the street.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_02]: And we'll be right back right after this.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's Kyle Meredith with Ian Ashtberry.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of bands will use an anniversary, of course, to do something you were able to say, man, it sure does look a lot like it did when we release that one record.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's part of our day.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's odd DNA.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's so much like I did.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_01]: I've ruptured my Achilles in two places jumping off the base cabinet about two years ago.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm not in jail with, I'm sorry, I'm not in a turn style jail with turn style.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: I got it.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: You got me.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but I had to get PRP and PRP.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_01]: extracts blood, spins in centrifuge, puts it back in, accelerates healing.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: So in some ways, death cult is our PRP.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's taking our original DNA, putting it back into us, and has given us such a sense of revitalization, going back to zero point, which is also a, if you have any kind of meditate process.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_01]: If you practice, I train martial arts.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: I studied since I was a kid, esoteric, certainly Eastern, and esoteria.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: You come back to the breath.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_01]: You come back to the zero point, that's the moment you're in.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: So in fact, the idea of nostalgia is an illusion.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: Your body does what it does of the course of the life.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: But if you can keep coming back to that central moment, that central initial connection which I believe I mean sudden death cult was very much that as well.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: But death cult was almost an extension of sudden death cult.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: And then feeling
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: a very familiar social political cultural landscape as well.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: It just felt instinctively appropriate.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: The death cult appeared, just started to come up more and more in the frontal lobe, and I started to look at it and go like, this is...
- 11:56[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, this is scary because in some ways you're going to put this out there and we have no idea how it's going to be received.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_02]: Which it has been very well, very very well.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_02]: I mean this is in the way people are fans, especially but talking about it, the opportunity.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_02]: I mean it's
- 12:13[SPEAKER_02]: like you have a career you have a if you're lucky as an artist you have a career so you're going to be singing a lot of the same songs over and over and maybe you don't have to tap into them because they're always there right yeah something like this like like if I went back and tried
- 12:29[SPEAKER_02]: to sing the songs, but back when I did play, you know, a long, long time ago when I was a teenager, I'd probably be able to look at that going, ah, man.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_02]: This is rough, and I'm not saying that because I don't think death cult is rough, but I'm saying as the person who did it's, like, what is it like tapping back into that?
- 12:47[SPEAKER_02]: What is it like having that conversation in these songs was the version of you from, you know, 40 years ago?
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: I kid was a coyote.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that kid was a street kid.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_01]: I was a street kid.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: I lived on a street.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't have anything.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I was, but I know it's like sleeping a bus station or a building site or, you know, get rolled on the street to be in a squat, a follow-crass, etc., in a smug the blunt with Paul Simon and Nick Clash gig in 1979, first time, I didn't even know what it was.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_01]: Chaz cigarette.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_02]: Chaz cigarette.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: Chaz cigarette.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: Just Paul Simon and the God Sakes, who was a God and still is a God.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_01]: Hey kids, how'd that moment go for you?
- 13:30[SPEAKER_01]: I was just so full of adrenaline and excitement.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_01]: We caused my vinyl, who we were with Clash, basically let the back doors open, we'd see the Clash and Glasgow and that's all in.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_01]: Like the kids were hanging around, just to say, wow, hi.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, fast forward, what three years later, we're opening for them.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: And some death call, just stealing the beer and... So, the show?
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: The show was phenomenal.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, my God.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: I remember Mick Jones, surrounded Whiteless Paul up in the air.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: He had a spiral cord.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: And that guitar went right up.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought he was going to catch it.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's very last minute.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_01]: Ah fuck.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: It does that anymore.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody does that anymore.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_01]: What Kyle, please explain to me what the fuck is going on?
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, ask is a terrified.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: Terrified.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: People in the industry are terrified.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone's like everyone's frozen.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_02]: The danger, right?
- 14:33[SPEAKER_02]: Like, let's...
- 14:35[SPEAKER_02]: I will interrupt you say, and this is an easy target.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_02]: I understand it's an easy target, but the MTV still has their VMAs and the best rock artist guy was Coldplay.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's Coldplay as the best rock artist.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_02]: Now, let Coldplay exist and do whatever they want to do with it.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_02]: But there's so many, but there is a thing.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, like, you know, Def Coldplay, there was a lot of money.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: We can't bang on Coldplay.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: Coldplay had never come across and said, we're trying to be something that we're not.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, I said let them exist as they do, and I would, absolutely, they're excellent at what they do, I've seen them lie, they're excellent at what they do, they're incredibly entertaining, they transcend you for like two or three hours.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: Great, but I'm not talking about coal flow, and I'm not talking about like eco-friendly, you know, being able to put on an eco-friendly concept, which we're all aspiring to do, of course we are.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: Of course we want it to be, of course we care about our ecosystem.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_02]: Of course we care about our ecosystem.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_02]: I'm agreeing with you about the danger gone.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_02]: It's that cold police fault.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_02]: They want best rockers.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not saying that it's that this, that's how this system is now set up.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_02]: that you have a great postpunk thing going on with some bands in Ireland and Scotland stuff like that.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, we talk about Naked, any of those.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we're a bit of a fracker.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: An Aussie, boys.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we do fine teens idols to the same, yeah, fun things are dope.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: Um, okay.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_01]: Am I have to retract my comment?
- 16:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's not on a level.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's what's been popularized perhaps by the broader media construct.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I mean, I love that.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_01]: Period.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: Staggering.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_01]: Gospol.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: kills me, crushes me, um, we're picking up thearchy, they're opening, right?
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: patriarchy and credible.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_01]: Incredible, live, raw.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I feel it's perhaps where the, I mean, I came up with people, mentors like Bill Graham, Bill Graham really cared about the community.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: He really cared about the artists.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: He was intimately involved with those artists.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: He was really intimately involved with mentoring, artists, and communities.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: That's why we did gathering in the tribes.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_01]: He cared about that.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: He cared about the community.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: He saw that MTV was eroding our emotional intelligence, shall we say.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_01]: and that we were all complicit and maybe subconsciously in the format, you know, the format, the fatigue, the formatting of MTV kind of forces down a certain funnel.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_01]: And then when we all work up, we won't own her.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_01]: You know, which we did, I mean, occulted anywhere with gathering the tribes in 1990, which obviously evolved into other things.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_01]: And there is a counter narrative, you're right, there is a counter narrative.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_01]: But I retain the right, the management reserves, the rights changes opinion, any goddamn, I'm at pleases.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_01]: I guess that's why I'm in the contradiction, like a contradiction.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but the way you all were able to be an outsider in the mainstream to jump back and forth, like even with the 90s hit, like when I hear the witch, which one of my favorite songs, right?
- 18:05[SPEAKER_02]: So when I hear the witch.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll elude you, thank you for noticing.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_01]: Weird movie, great soundtrack.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but that's what I'm saying for you guys to have figured out, you know, gathering in the tribes and what it stood for.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_02]: And the way you, you know, held yourself out there, artistically speaking, to have been an outsider and to have pulled all those people at them.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you're using that terminology still, you know, I know, and then the new press release about this tour, you know, we are gathering the tribes once again in these outsiders.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I like, I like, I like outlier it's outlier.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's more of a maybe romantic, but I think we're saying the same thing here.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_02]: I think we are.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_02]: We're saying the same thing.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but like what a thing to do.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_02]: This sounds like a dumb way to ask this question, but was it hard?
- 19:02[SPEAKER_02]: to be essentially rock stars, pop stars aren't a star at the time, but to still be this outlier.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_01]: I struggled with it.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_01]: Once MTV kind of grabbed a band and we were on heavy rotation.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_01]: And then we had label behind us like, you know, reprise in the United States and see more sign and sign as, and we were at that zenith point of a career in terms of commercial success and eyes on.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: Something didn't feel right because my friends, my associates, my friends were not really in that space.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_01]: They were more like evolving, like, you know, people like Andrew Wood from other loved ones.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_01]: They were emerging.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I was more likely to be around them than I was to be around at some bougie MTV, you know, velvet rope party.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't go to those places.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't frequent, I didn't feel comfortable in those environments, I didn't feel comfortable being objectified, you know, because the way I looked, everyone is saying that was a dumb dumb, you know, who hold my beer, you know, you know, I'm bright and it was, I couldn't get a break.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, one journalist, the enemy said, my mother must have been sniffing glue when she gave birth to me, two TPs, short of a reservation, so not only did she find in my mother who died in my 17th birthday of cancer, she also made a racist slurre towards the night of Americans.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_01]: Different time, these were put down, and I wasn't having it.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_01]: And because I wasn't having it, I spoke my mind to go like, maybe we're just going to turn the volume down a little bit and push over here and I took a beating in the media, I took a beating and everybody assumes, well, many folks assumed that because you're not present in media that you're no longer active, vital, relevant, whatever.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_01]: It was a personal choice.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_01]: My father was also dying of cancer at that moment.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_01]: He died at 58.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_01]: So there was a lot going on behind the scenes.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I was also dealing with my own coming of age.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_01]: I was coming of age in a band.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_01]: I started when I was 19.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_01]: So coming from as many of us do,
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: tumultuous childhoods and then immediately get thrown into the cordon of you're on the front covered the enemy and you don't even have a record out.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_01]: No music was out.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to cover the enemy's sudden death cult shot by Anton Corbin in 82.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't know what's going on.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was at Li-Bade in 1985, sitting between Bob Goldoff and Billy Conley.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_01]: Go look at it, it's funny.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_01]: I looked at it the other day.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_01]: Somebody said, have you seen it?
- 21:46[SPEAKER_01]: I might work.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_01]: Li-Bade.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, yeah, I'm busy there and I said, no, go look at it.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, oh shit, I'm drunk.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_01]: Now I'm in, I'm a hammered.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just not going to figure it out.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_01]: The Li-Bade!
- 21:58[SPEAKER_01]: My queen are on stage.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_01]: What?
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: It was a lot to process.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_01]: You don't process it in the moment you process it's like a car accident or something to shock I think shock Drag this through the adrenals, but the cult had a 12 year run before it imploded We took a high net.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_02]: It will be right back right after this
- 22:21[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_02]: It's Kyle Meredith with Ian asked Barry still making great music even as you're reporting and then going into a holy barbarians, which is a fucking great record on itself.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I don't think he made a better record.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_02]: You know.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, dear.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: I laugh.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_01]: Have you heard that one?
- 22:40[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I could be telling you that.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_01]: Some of the lyrics in it.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: I think that was my kind of brick pop record.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that's when football was football.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: It was very, I mean, I grew up at Mersey Siding Glasgow.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: So, and Canada.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: So, again, you know, the contradiction, because in the UK, they think, why do you speak with an American accent?
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: I like, I don't.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_01]: And then when I'm over here, the guy, like, are you from Britain?
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, kind of.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why I live in LA, but it's a lot, no, it's, yeah, keeping it grounded is, I got the dojo, that's where I keep it grounded, train, train, train, train, train, train, train, train, improve, try and be decent, try and be a service, try not to be a deck, sometimes in the deck.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's a good thing to have.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_02]: I tap to, because
- 23:33[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know that you all do the same types, martial arts.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, he's he's he's a grappler.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_01]: He's definitely got ground game.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_02]: But I hear about that same, the way you're talking about it in the same way.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, may not, may not school just.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_01]: He is a sweet heart, he is a good man, he's got a good heart, and he is devoted to his craft, he's devoted to music, he's a performer, the writer, he cares, and we recently did shows you a tool, Mexico City, our sex stadium is crazy.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_01]: This is unbelievable, incredible.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_01]: And that was recently, I was on the march.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I didn't realize that you all shared the bill.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_01]: Those two conspired to get us on the bill and Adam was into as well, so, and Danny, they're pretty staggering.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen two or three times, it's like, oh, it's something else.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_01]: It is something else.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: It is probably the counter narrative.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: Long may they, and George, are this company?
- 24:35[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just like, people say, what's the like being an evangelist?
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: Or like you live in the same house as something, like the Beatles and, you know, our days in the
- 24:47[SPEAKER_02]: I know I only got a few minutes, you know, couldn't pass up because looking back now as we're able to do with what you're doing here with this tour with the cold and the death cold.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_02]: And just realizing, even as we talk about this, how many different bands not only have you been by name, but have you been in the cults?
- 25:04[SPEAKER_02]: You've been a lot of different bands in the cult.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, that in your sounds.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we talked about the record two years ago, you know, that doesn't go like this.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: Like the wall behind you, we've gone, is that a fix to an ambulance?
- 25:17[SPEAKER_01]: No, I can't see that.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, we got some DePesh mode here.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_02]: REM, of course, Prince and Bowie Mountain Goats.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: That's a good picture, Mike Stein.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, of course.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_01]: You got to David on the wall.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_01]: Gohan and David.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_01]: David, gohan and Bowie.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_01]: Uh-huh.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_01]: Excellent.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_02]: That's all right, though.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's, I mean, because I guess that's a part of it, too.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_02]: That's what I mean, is like, you all have done so many different sounds through your career.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_02]: and pull it off.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not trying to, you know, blow smoke your way or anything.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_02]: Like, like, the compliments are genuine is what I mean.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_02]: Like, like, how do you, you said this at the beginning, everything's from your gut, right?
- 25:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_02]: Like, who's the cult going to be next?
- 25:59[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, it's already started.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
- 26:10[SPEAKER_02]: I think this is not like when are you going to do any record?
- 26:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not trying to do that.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if that could be interesting.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: I'm obsessed with Berlin, I'm obsessed with the electronic dark wave.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'm obsessed with the dark futurism, electronic, the dark wave femme, the dark wave brutalism.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_01]: it's evident that we are not going to move into a knitted pull-overs and acoustic guitars.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: Hello, here's a song about sheep farming.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we're going there.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's going to be full B2 bombers and I mean how can you not if you have a heart pick up on what's going on globally?
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: The idea of being on the spectrum wherever you are in the spectrum, we're all connected.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: So hopefully we can work it out.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's John Lennon, so I can, like, you know, bag is a man.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_01]: If you notice, it's a bag in.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_02]: The color, matte gray is dominant in vehicles right now.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that is so of our time, when you talk about the cold war, and I think about colors, like that's the color.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_01]: Exxon observation, and that's really using your, I mean, emotional intelligence, that's, I mean, honestly, that's pretty much how I do it.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: You just pick up on frequencies, and you're like, this is really interesting.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_01]: I'm seeing this here, here and here,
- 27:44[SPEAKER_01]: But you're right.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm seeing more and more of that kind of satin or flag grey.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: Very industrial.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_01]: Very industrial.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: It feels almost like we're into this.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_01]: You can imagine, and the all-well movie just came out as well, which I haven't seen, but I really want to say it.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_01]: I actually love grey.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's something to share with you.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_01]: We're about to use grey.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_01]: Again, you're on the frequency and talking about dark wave and stuff like that like there's I'd say all man honestly I'd love to do things like to fucking play the great for dead play with Lana Del Rey one off
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: Just do one-offs with everybody, you really admire.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like, everybody could just go, you know what, let's share toys.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: I think that'll be an amazing festival, actually, to just get a lot of people together who love music and say, what are we going to do?
- 28:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, well, what have you got?
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: And what have you got?
- 28:40[SPEAKER_01]: And then throw it together and do rehearsals.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_01]: And then present it.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_01]: Now everyone's trying to gouge the last penny out of, or promote it, so I just got their heads and hands right now.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's the tribes, man.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_01]: Where is the word?
- 28:54[SPEAKER_01]: Where is the word?
- 28:55[SPEAKER_01]: There is a will.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_01]: And we shall find a way.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_01]: Curate by Rick Rubin' probably.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_01]: Because Rick now is everybody apparently.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_01]: That's no everybody.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_01]: I bet he does, yeah.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: I could have been calling him up, but he doesn't have the funds.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_01]: Bill Murray's style.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_01]: You just have to show up.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_02]: Bill Murray's style.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_02]: You just have to show up.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_02]: You're not Bill Murray might be interesting.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_02]: As a cultural.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_02]: He's on tour.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_02]: She's got his little blues.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_02]: Outfit that he tours with right now.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_02]: He does.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_02]: In fact, I mean, Louisville, they're going to be playing right next door here.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_01]: Louisville.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_02]: A few nights.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_02]: I think they're going to be over here.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_02]: Amazing.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that those tribes mean.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_02]: I'm telling you, it's time.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_01]: It sounds like it.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_01]: Tribes.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, different version.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, when I was in with all respect to a lot of clues, and when I was in South America, I saw the billboards for a lot of clues, and it was a big Jack Daniels bomb.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: And it was also a sunscreen commercial.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_01]: So that wasn't the original intention of gathering
- 29:55[SPEAKER_01]: and tolerance, and a festival of music, unity, consciousness, and communication.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_01]: I came up with that slug line as a 26-year-old, 27-year-old, just earnestly, and people go, you pretentious, you're so pretentious.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, basically a child.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_01]: I don't even know how to be pretentious yet.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_01]: I will wait till I get to my forties for that.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: Now, well, gone past that one, but whatever.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_02]: It means you just get to go back.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_02]: You get to go back to childlike.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_02]: What do it?
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's it.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: You go back to zero point.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_01]: You go back to death cult.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: You remind yourself of where you came from, and it really does put the fire on your belly.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_01]: But the death cult shows that we have done it.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god, savage, I've, somebody said, can you describe it in a sentence or a couple of words?
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: I want, yeah, be a typical savagery.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's connected, it's connected.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_01]: and I've seen so much, you know, I've been in Belfast, I've been into, I've been into, I've been into bet.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_01]: I've been in Perlum in the world, but I mean, we've seen so much, been at like, traveled, you know, experience the part-time South Africa.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_01]: But so, so many moments that we haven't really spoken about.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_01]: because I'm not here to kind of, you know, the good old days.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's about what's happening right in this moment.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's why the paradise now is the title of the tour.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_01]: And then I remember Ray Manzarek when I got asked to join Ray sat down.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_01]: I sat down with Danny Schroen and Ray Manzarek.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_01]: And they were being offered the Holy David's and Sonja's anniversary.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I said to her, I said, this is the time that you want to go out and play your music.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_01]: He says, well, if not now, then when?
- 31:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I went bloody good point.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_01]: So that was it.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_01]: Things come up.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_01]: You can possibly act upon your gut.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_01]: And if not now, then when?
- 31:52[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what we're talking about with paradise now.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_01]: Paradise now has a mantra for all.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_01]: And it is available.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_01]: at your local cult, death cult, patriarchy, concert, and we'll be squeezing out a few surprises along the road as well.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_01]: We're not a waste, it's a main, we're not playing the Rose Bowl and all that, but... I remember no, Gallagher's, Nelson, and on the side of the stage, we're playing stadium in River Plate Stadium, and he's working from spiral carpets.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_01]: I was funny.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_01]: Here we all aren't.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I tell you, I didn't go to the OAS to show, but I will be, and by the way, I would have, if I got to take it happily, but I will definitely be at one of these shows to see the cult and the death cult.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think I'm going to miss this one.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're all, they're going to be, it's going to be pretty kinetic because our style is to, we have sort of a very last moment, keep it scary, like, do I know that bit?
- 32:51[SPEAKER_01]: Have you gone that?
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: And put the energy of that?
- 32:54[SPEAKER_01]: When you're over rehearsed, it's pretty boring.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_01]: But when you're kind of under rehearsed, it demands that you have to tap into your, you know your emotional intelligence again, and respond to the moment.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_01]: And stay off TMZ.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's a good parting, parting phrase right there for a good news for anybody.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think TMZ is fine, but I actually got on TMZ in one of our last tours, so.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_02]: They were actually saying you were doing something good.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_01]: I stopped some of getting in.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_01]: There was a choke, some of you was getting a choke called in front of me and the security were picking the noses and not paying attention to some of you was getting really hurt.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_01]: I just got involved, and I despise violence anywhere, especially shows, supposed to be a safe place.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_01]: So, cultures are safe spaces.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone's, everyone's welcome.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_02]: I love to hear it.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_02]: I'll be there.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_02]: I can't wait for it.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you, brother.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I always love talking to you so much.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_02]: Really, thank you so much for taking the time again today.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for having me on your lovely show.
