- 1:03SPEAKER_02: Coach, great to meet you, man.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's great to be here.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Well, when you reached out, man, I was like, okay, this this will be different.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Something I hadn't done, but it it's great to be here.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: I've uh obviously followed you for for a year or so now, and uh it's great great to be with you guys.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: Slit into your DMs.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: How about that move?
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you did.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Yes, you did.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, wasn't expecting that, but I responded.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: So you did.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Here we are.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I appreciate that.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: Are you a fan of comedy?
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Do you watch a lot?
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: I am.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: I I really am.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Uh I I was telling you before I actually sent my brother, my brother coaches, so he's got four little kids, and he um uh coaches all their sports, and your your uh your bid on uh travel sports, I sent it to him, it resonated with him how how crazy it is.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: But but I do um, you know, I I I'd like to say I was one of the few that uh got on the Nate Bargazzi train, you know, before he got became so popular.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: He's he's but yeah, I do.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: There's there's a lot of local comedians I've learned since we've we've been in Chicago for two years, a lot of really funny people.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, have you been to any of the comedy clubs?
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: You been in Zanies or I'm telling you, we took we took over a program, it was three and twenty-nine the year before we arrived.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: So I have had no time for anything.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: It's been like, how do we rebuild this thing and get it to a respectable level and then continue to take steps?
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: So unfortunately I haven't yet, but I'm hoping to.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Well, we'll bring a show to you.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: We'll come back.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: You can take a break.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: When you first got to DePaul, it was the comedy club.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, I didn't want to say that, but yeah, it was not great.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: It was not great.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: Um three and twenty two?
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Three and twenty-nine.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Three and twenty-nine.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, three three and twenty-nine, and uh I have a great AD, great president.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: They they uh gave us an opportunity to come in here and and change things, and we've been able to really stake uh take some great steps here in two years.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: What was that like getting that job?
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: Like the process, did you uh have hesitations yourself, or were you like, hey man, this is like you know, because it's a historic program.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: When I was growing up, DePaul was, and I can remember this.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: DePaul was the basketball team in town.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: This before Michael Jordan came here, right?
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: The blue demons were bigger than the Bulls in that era, right?
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Especially like the that late 70s.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: When I started remembering this like early 80s, people actually paid attention, were invested in DePaul.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: People, it it's amazing how many stories, and I don't want to age you, but people of your age bracket, it's amazing how much I hear that.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Like, hey, coach, like they didn't they came out for DePaul over the Bulls, over the Bears, like everybody else.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was an event when DePaul played.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: It was Dallas Comagies, was it well, Aguirre, all of them.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: You know, they were they were all a part of that.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: And that era was a golden error for DePaul basketball, there's no question.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, the last two decades have been have been you know a few good years here and there, but pretty hard, honestly.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Um and I I you know I think that the the challenge is to to obviously get back to some of those glory days.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: You're never gonna completely repeat uh history, but uh the the the challenge is to get back to some of those glory days, and that's that's been our mission since we got here two years ago.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: So how do how does a a school because if a school is doing great, you have to sell yourself to the school, but how do they sell themselves to you to get you to come to us?
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know what?
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: It was it was really interesting because I had spent seven years at Ohio State, and I was The Ohio State?
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: The Ohio State, yes, yes, thank you for making that correction.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Um the Ohio State, yes, seven years there.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Our family, you know, really enjoyed it there.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: We struggled the last two two years, so I was kind of wondering what's next.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: And um I was we have got a great AD, Dwayne Peavy, um, President Rob Manuel, and they were kind of looking for this program to take steps.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Uh they really pursued me, and at that point I wasn't sure, you know, I've I was uh receiving a buyout.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: I wasn't sure if I wanted to maybe sit out a year or not.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: I called honestly, I called people in my profession, colleagues of mine that I respected, like really well-known coaches.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: These like mentors of yours?
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Can you share any names?
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Anyway, you know, I called Jay Wright, who was at Villanova, uh who was coming off back-to-back national championships.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: I I I talked to him for a while.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Um I talked to a guy named Ed Cooley, who at the time was at Providence, who's now who's now at Georgetown.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Um, and and I talked to Tom Izzo, you know, um uh about it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Um and you know, I got their opinions on what you know what they thought I should do.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: And then I've got I got a lot of like national media people who knew what college land, you know, the college landscape was.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: And I'm telling you, it was surprising.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Jay, Jay was great.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Jay didn't say, hey, take it, don't take it.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: He just said, you know, think it through.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: How good of a job can it be right now?
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Brad Stevens, who's with who's uh was it Butler's with the Celtics president, I called him as well.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: And I got more like, hey, this is one you should be careful about than not, to be honest with you.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: And I was like, hey, listen, I'm gonna trust my gut here.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: Um I talked to my wife and daughter, and I gave them like three options of cities we could live in, um, potentially, and they were like, Chicago, let's do it.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: So we we jumped on board.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we jumped on board.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: How about that?
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and now to uh because I uh since I got you since I've been in your DMs, I started that's when the fascination really took place.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Watching a lot of interviews and dude, I love how you talk about year one, year two.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Like it seems to me that you are here for uh a bit.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: You you're gonna turn this thing around, you're gonna leave your mark here.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: Um, and you've been doing it.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Your first year, and I'd love to hear it from you, but the progress from that three and twenty-nine start to when you enter the situation, talk about that and like the strides you've been making.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: The first thing we want to do is like we wanted to get a competitive group that you know, Win Trust is where we we play.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: And when we got here, it was honestly was dead.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: You know, they were there were people that told me, hey, at a couple of the games, they were eight students, you know, that came out to one of the games.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: This past year we had the highest attendance student game ever when we beat Marquette at home.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: So that cost you too, didn't it?
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: It did cost me.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: We're gonna get to that, I'm sure.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Cost me a lot of money.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: That was a big beer tab that night for all the students.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: It was a phenomenal experience.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, after the win, he bought everyone around at Kelly's.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, really?
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: I tweeted out.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: I had no idea.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: I had no idea that it would blow up.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, I'm not in the social media, I just had no idea.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: So after the game, we're literally sitting in the conference room with the coaches.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: We had not beaten Marquette in several years.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: It was a big emotional.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: We just got done celebrating with the players.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Then we're talking as the coaches.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: I was about to go to the media and I said, you know what?
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: I think I'm gonna tweet out, just said it's a tweet out, I'm gonna buy beers for every student who came, every DePaul student who came to the game.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna just gonna buy beers.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: We're gonna meet them.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: No matter what their age.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say freshman here 68.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we yeah, we condone underage drinking at DePaul.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Uh Lincoln Park, and we're out.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: And I was like, hey, listen, we're gonna do this.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, I'm sure.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Hopefully not.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Hopefully not.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: But um, I said, hey, we're gonna, we're gonna, yeah, we're just gonna buy uh 21 and over.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: We're gonna buy beers, and uh I'll meet you in 20 minutes.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: And the staff was like, well, hold up, hold up here.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Let's run it by, let's run it up the chain, let's see if you know what what the AD thinks, let's see, you know, what the social media team, because they're gonna I said, no, I'm just gonna tweet that I want to do it.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: Like so we did it, and uh we went to a couple different bars.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: It's been a minute since I went bar hopping, and uh, we went to a couple different bars and bought beers and kind of celebrated the night.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: It was a lot of fun.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that went like viral.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: That was much appreciated.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: And that's why you got the vibe you got going there.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: You're building this thing, and it's great to see the students getting involved because as you mentioned earlier, we were talking about the the glory days of DePaul basketball.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was a decent environment, but you're still going out to Rosemont.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Wind Trust is a much better situation.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: I've been to a few games there.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, love the vibe.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: It's easy to get in and out of there, too.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: Right, it's in the city.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: It is, yeah, basically down the street compared to where DePaul used to have to go.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: It was critical.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't I I when I was a butler, I coached it at Rosemont.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: It's tough, it's tough getting out there.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: I I probably wouldn't be at DePaul if the place was still at Rosemont.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Wind Trust is a great thing.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: You're in a timeout and there's a 787 going over your head.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: You're like, all right, hold up a minute.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you guys.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: Once this plane clears, I can't hear myself talk.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not the best acoustics in there.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: Hey guys, quick question.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: Are you washing your face with the same soap you wash your car with?
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Do you shower in the driveway too?
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: It's time to step things up.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: That's why I like Tiege Hanley.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: It's a super simple skincare system made for guys.
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: Cleanse, moisturize, exfoliate.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: It's all laid out so you don't have to think about it.

- 10:08SPEAKER_02: Start taking care of your face like an adult.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: That's Tiege.com slash Pat.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: So now you got like more of a story to tell.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: When you bring in and when you recruit, you got to go to these kids, but you also bring them on campus too, and you gotta show them Chicago.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: Is this what's your tour?
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: How do you uh sell the city?
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know what?
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: It's been great because it's one of the things we want to tap into is hey, this is one of the best cities in the world.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: Um, we want to take advantage of the city in today's college sports, college football, college basketball.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: You're really everybody's pretty much recruiting nationally because we have what's called the transfer portal now, where anybody can leave at any time.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Everybody's on quote unquote one-year contracts, one-year deals.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: So you're really recruiting nationally.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: We still recruit Chicago.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: We will recruit the city, we'll recruit the suburbs, but you're really recruiting nationally.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: So you do want to and internationally.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: We have five international players.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, how about that right now?
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: How many assistants do you have?
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: We have I have uh I have a staff of uh eight and uh six assistants and then a and then a support staff of a couple of years.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: And what how much do they help with recruiting?
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: I have uh four guys that play a major role in recruiting and evaluating, and right now the transfer portal's open, so they're you know doing everything they can, or the transfer portal is about to open on the seventh.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: I saw you retained some guys already.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we did.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: That was that's huge for us.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: I think for us to build a program, we want to have one player, we want our fans to know the know the team.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: You know, so we have a couple guys that are have been with us three years going into the third year.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: That's important for fans.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: You still have David Booth?
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Is he still there?
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I would love to have David Booth.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: David Booth was there my entire wasn't really he was there when I was in college, high school, college.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: He's one of those guys that was cur contributing for so long that you felt like he was there for six or seven years.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: Like a Shane Badier or somebody like that.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Man, when is he like when is he gonna leave college?
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Right, right, right, right.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: There's there's there's those guys.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: David Booth was probably that guy for DePaul.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: He was uh but yeah, this is huge.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: Retaining players to build a program, identity, to have that.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: No, no doubt.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: And and you mentioned it.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Year one, we won 14 games after after the the uh the season before they had only won three games.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: That was good, but we were still 14 and 20, and we still had games in the Big East, which is our league, and it's one of the best leagues in the country that got away from us.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: Year two, we were able to close the gap.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: We set the we set had the most Big East win since 2007, which was huge for us.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: We finished sixth in the league out of 11 teams, which is the highest they've ever finished in the Big East in 20 plus years.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: What was the record?
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Uh we finished 16 and 16.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: 16 and 16.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 16 and 16.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: And so we were able to take another step, another step in terms of competitiveness, and now the challenge force is to hear our name called on selection Sunday.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: I know that's a couple years.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's the challenge force.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: That is coming.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: That is coming.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: Where is the uh because you you talk about the big east, and this is you know, well, they got UConn in, right?
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: They had how many uh did they have in the Suite 16?
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: They have uh they had St.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: John's uh in the Sweet 16 and UConn.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: And unfortunately, they were they were basically in the same bracket, so one of them was probably gonna get eliminated before the final four.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: Where's the toughest place to go in the Big East and play?
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: UConn now, because of what Danny's created and uh what Danny and his staff have done at UConn.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Like that's what do you think of him?
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: He's got a huge personality, huh?
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: Did you know him prior to that?
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: A euphemism for nuts.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's I mean, many a lot of people were talking about this official, right?
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: This official and him uh coming nose to nose at the end of the the Yukon uh the Yukon uh Duke game.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: And if you know the official, the official's got name is Roger Ayers, and he's one of those guys that when he sees a moment like that shot happening and point four on the clock right now, like that was I think in a way that was Roger, you know, like saying, Wow, I can't believe I'm a part of this moment right now as an official.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: Like, this is an amazing moment in college sports.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: Like, I gotta go over to the scores table and get the but this is an amazing moment.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: And it just so happened that he walked towards Danny.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: And Danny's he's a little crazy.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's a little crazy at times.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: And and that's entertainment.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: Yes, he's extremely entertaining.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: You should you should sit with him in meetings, in Biggie's meetings.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: He's really entertaining.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: He's really entertaining.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: And I think that was, you know, Danny's got this incredible big personality, and it was a spontaneous moment.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: I don't know if he had buttled him.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: It was not, it was it was more intentional.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was no, it was it wasn't intentional and they nuzzled or something.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Are they well?
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: They might have dug him out too.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Eskimo kiss?
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, rub no.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Eskimo kiss or something.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: You know, it yeah, it was it was really, it wasn't there was no anger.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, if you know both people, you're like, oh, that totally makes sense.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: You know, that that moment happened.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: Uh it just so happened, you know, social media overreaction.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: What is a relationship with officials?
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: Because man, I have a hard time controlling myself at uh seventh grade.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: Seventh grade game.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, the quality may not be the best.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: No, just I don't want to spare it.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: I can't say anything.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: Can't say anything about them.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: They will escalate it immediately.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: If you say anything to a ref now, they're like, you know, they are on you.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe you shouldn't have to be able to do that.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: Not to mention you might then run into them at the grocery store later.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're from the neighborhood.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: But what can you say to these guys?
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: What how far can you go, and what's your tactic to to work the officials?
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: The best officials are the ones you can talk to.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: The the the of most coaches would say the worst officials are the ones who you can't have no conversation with in the game either because it's all imperious, and how dare you even approach me.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: That's a great swear.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Can you swear?
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: At them?
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: Like toward like you said, that was a BS call or what the fuck.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: You yes, you can, and I have often.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Um, unfortunately, I have.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: Uh my my daughter says before every game, hey coach, or dad, good luck.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: I could she didn't call me coach around the house unless I tell her, hey, you better call me coach.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Um timeout, dad.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: She says, Dad, good luck and don't get a technical because she's seen me thrown out of a couple games.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: I was thrown at out at Michigan State.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: Uh that one I wanted.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Was it here?
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: No, no, this was uh this was about three or four years ago.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Um and and it was, you know, it was one of those games where it was at the very end of the game.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: It it was a close game.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: We weren't gonna win it.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: I was not happy with the officiating.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: And um I got thrown out and they tossed me, and the cop comes out, and he's yeah, they gotta they gotta escort you to the locker room.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: So I mean, I was gonna go, I didn't need to be escorted, but the cop comes out and I walk over to Izzo, Tom Izzo, and I was, you know, I shook his hand, congratulations, because I wasn't gonna be able to, and he goes, I don't like these MFers either.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: Or something along those lines, you know.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, something along those lines.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it's you you can't say um, you can't say nor most officials, the big east has an unbelievable officiating career.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: I'm not just saying that, they really do.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: But you'd have to be careful in the way in which you say things.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: Have you ever gotten deliberately thrown out like as a motivational tactic?
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: No, no, but I've been really close.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Uh I've been really close to to doing that.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Um I have this year, um, I I intentionally got a technical because I didn't feel like it was in the St.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: John's game.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: I just didn't feel like we were getting a great whistle.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: And that one was uh that one was intentional.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: But you know, if it's intentional, I'd like to be able to stay in and see if we can pull the game out.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, there have been times where it's uh you absolutely go at the official um because you feel like you're not getting the right calls.
- 17:59unknown: Okay.
- 18:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you got a lot to deal with.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: You gotta deal with the officials, you gotta deal with the whole, you know, the game planning, the the recruiting, the talking to these guys.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: Um don't have to worry about fashion as much anymore.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: The coaches now are just not getting into suiting up or thinking about what they're doing.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: What are they wearing?
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: Everybody is Petino still dressing up?
- 18:19SPEAKER_03: He's still dressing up.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: I think he is.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he is.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: He's a what's your style's coast.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: You know, he I I've went I've gone casual.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: My wife hates it.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know how you guys feel about it when you walk, you know.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you have an opinion on it or not.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Um, it's not the best look, to be honest with you.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Um, I just remember back in the day, people like it didn't bother me.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: I don't really care.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: But it is funny to me now when you see and more in the NBA.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: They're all in the same way.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: There's a big patch about it.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: They look like Devo.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: They do.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: It looks like a choir behind the bench.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Like in the NBA, you can't dress up.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: It's required.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: It's a it's a it's a rule that coaches have to wear kind of suits.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: That's a new thing.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: They have to wear similar tile.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: In college, there's no, you know, you can some guys wear suits, some guys wear a three like patino at times.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: It'll be like the whole, I mean, it'll look unbelievable.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Um, some guys will just wear a coat.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: Um by and large, that woman's coach at Kim Kim Uh Kim Wolkey.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: She's got she's like a fashion like she wears like the wildest stuff.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: Loud stuff.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: That'd be great if her staff had wore the same stuff too.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: They all had that same ridiculous coat.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's a she's a heck of a coach.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: What can't you wear?
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: Was was in violation of any NCAA.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: They've honestly they've never said.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, I've seen coaches wear hoodies.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: I've seen coaches wear, you know, most coaches are wearing like a quarter zip.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: I've seen coaches wear hoodies, you know.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: We've got a couple coaches that wear the same polo every game.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: Okay, like good luck.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: It's casual for the kids.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: I'm sure it makes it more relatable because that's got to be a challenge relating to these kids.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: And how are you doing that?
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: What is like what's it like in a locker room?
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: Do you let these kids have phones in a locker room?
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: Do you have a uh do you run a tight ship?
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: Because I saw somebody talking about this.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: The old school coaches are kind of flourishing right now.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: They're saying this.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: That a lot of these maybe younger players are responding to order and discipline, and that you're seeing like Izzo had a great run this year.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: And you know, these these guys that are more like No question.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: No, no question, Pat.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: There's no question.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Guys, kids today, the your best players always want to be coached.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Always.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: I've never had a I've never had a good player who didn't want to be coached and held accountable every single day.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: It just never happened.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: I tell that to our team all the time.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Every all-conference player I've had, like every day he wants to come in and be coached.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: He wants me to coach him hard and and without fail.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Like the ones that don't always achieve their potential, they don't want that.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Good players want to be coached, uh, and they want to be coached every day and they want to be held accountable.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: So how long is your practice?
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: A typical practice?
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: You know, it'll start in the in no, you know, in the early part of the year, let's say October right now, where we're ramping up towards the start of the season.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: Uh are you including film in that?
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: Uh sure, yeah.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: If you're including film, it's going to be about three and a half hours.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: Um you break it down, you take a break and do film in the middle, or you do we'll do we'll do film to start.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: You know, if you're including film and stretching and time on the floor, it's probably, you know, now you can only go four hours a day.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: It's an NCAA rule.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: So, you know, in the preseason, yeah, it'll be it'll be touching, it'll be touching that.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: Uh and they have weights too, as well.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: But yeah, the the practices in the early part of the season are long.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: And then I've been fortunate coached um eight NCAA tournament teams.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: When you're when you're getting towards the end of the season, those practices are like an hour and fifteen minutes.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: You know, they're they're an hour.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: And you have every minute planned?
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: You got like we're doing this, we're doing it's a f it's every minute.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: You ever take a shot at practice?
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: You ever take like pick up a random ball and like jack a three?
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: Your players want to see like can you can you still do it a little bit?
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: Can you still hoop a little bit?
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Could you ever hoop is kind of like a lot of people?
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: What was your playing career?
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, it was I was at I played uh at a school called Taylor University, great school, but NAI school.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: I was alright.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was all right.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: I wasn't bad.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: I mean all American, I think.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you for saying that.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was alright.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: I was alright.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: I wasn't a great athlete, but I had a lot of fun.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: I love to compete.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Um, you've said you're you're coaching your kids, it's you know, it's you you love the competitive part of sports.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: So when your skin looks better, you feel more confident everywhere you go.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: At work, out with friends, on a date, or like me at a big show.

- 23:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you look like you still are staying in shape.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: You work out, you're using the facilities in Lincoln Park.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: I actually go to I actually go to Equinox.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Uh so here's my deal.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: So like this, these jobs are so stressful and they're so demanding, and they've now become 12 months a year.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: You used to be able to, you know, take a couple months off right after the season.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: Because you you weren't having so much movement on your rosters now.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: Like, we've jumped right into recruiting.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: So they're 12 months out of the year.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: So for me, about four years ago, you know, I went to my doctor right after the season.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: He's like, hey man, like you you got it, you got some health issues.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Like, you gotta get yourself right.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: So I started working out six days a week.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: It's the first thing I do in the morning.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: You know, six in the morning, I'm in the gym, and it's kind of my way of getting started.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Um, but I think you have to do it because this profession is so demanding.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: You are right now.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: I'm good now.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thank you.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Thanks, Wayne.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: I appreciate it.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: That was a few years ago.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: I'm better now.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but thanks for checking on me.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, man.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: It was like a it was a wake-up call for me.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: So one of those you get.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: So it's been it's been great.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: So how much or is this even allowed or ethical that whatever your star player is, that you employ them to help sort of recruit and try to bring other players to the program?
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: Do you ever do that?
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, they can.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: Like the guys we retain right now, you know, they're they're they'll be recruiting when we bring guys on campus, they'll be recruiting them right now.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: You know, guys want to play with good players.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: Um, I I think what you're seeing now in this NIL era, and you're seeing, you know, these like you look at the Final Four right now, you have unbelievable teams in the Final Four.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, like really high level.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: I think what we're gonna see in the next 10 years of college basketball is you're gonna see the sport continue to kind of grow.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: It's grown in the last five or six years.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: More people are interested.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: I think NIO has helped that.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: The caliber of play is much like that Arizona Michigan game is going to be unreal.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be unreal.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: Now, Arizona, they got a guy who played professionally in Germany for a few years.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right?
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: You're seeing that now.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: You know, so what are the rules?
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: Like great question.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: So we have a 7-2 center right now uh that we got from Spain.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: He came over.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: Um he's seven foot two, legit seven feet two.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Um, and he was playing professionally over in Spain.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: What they do is they say, okay, hey, we're gonna dock a year or two based on your profession.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: So if you played a year or two over professionally, we're gonna we're you're not gonna have four years to play.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: You might only have three years or two years to play.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: This case you have to duck under the L tracks.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: So and and and how how is that determined?
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: Just arbitrarily, like we just NCAA.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, NCAA, they they're they're the ones who determine it.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: And uh when you're recruiting like most of the international players, Arizona recruits, yeah.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: Uh you look at Illinois right now.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Illinois half their roster is international players.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and they are really, really good.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: They all played professionally.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: The kids we recruited, they all played professionally over there.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: Well, you say, why are they coming over here?
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: The money's better.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: The money's better right now.
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, how much money is being made by some of these guys at the top programs?
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: Two and a half, you know, two.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: And it's coming from the university.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: University is only allowed to give so much money to and that's public, right?
- 26:37SPEAKER_02: That is.
- 26:37SPEAKER_02: There is the budget is what?
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: There is a cap for for all, you know, basically, what are the kind of main revenue drivers?
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: It's it's football, it's men's basketball, it's women's basketball.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: That's who's getting most of what's called the rev share.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Um not too much from lacrosse.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Well, no, not really.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, they can get their own NIL deals, I guess.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: But most of the school's money is going directly to those sports.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: And that's where, you know, and then there's some outside deals.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: Like there's there's people making, there's kind of uh the rev share, and then there's, you know, people who are donoring donating to universities saying, hey, I want to help retain that athlete, or I want to help recruit that young man.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: Does DePaul have that?
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: Like a outside DePaul alumni revenue, what yeah, we do.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: We we've we've had um you know what's what's helped in the last 18 months is we've had this like real uptick in in fundraising.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: It's been like it's been great, you know, and credit to our AD Dwayne Peavy.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: And and we've it's helped that they're it's a winning, man.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: It's a winning.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: It has really helped.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: You're wakes everything up, no doubt.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Lifts all boats.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: Like the fact that attendance has been way up and it does.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: It really helps.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: You gotta show proof of concept that you can do this year.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: People are gonna be more.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: I was just on a fundraising call last night, and but it's amazing the amount of money.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: Think about this.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: Last year, guys were making good NIL, okay?
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: This year, the expected payroll for basketball programs is expected to increase by 33%.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: So most of these kids are getting, if they produce, almost like a 33% ye raise year over year.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: And it at the age of you know, 19, 20, 21.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: So, you know, it's a it's a lot for kids.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Um, it adds expectations, obviously, but it's the price of doing business at this level.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: So some of these kids might be making more money than you.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that's right, Joy.
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: That is right.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: That is right.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: Yes, that is right.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: Man, how how humiliating that because of 18-year-old's butt.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: Um, no, I don't do that.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: I will never do that.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: I will never, but you're right.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: It's it's what you know, you're exactly right.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: It's a great point.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: And the NBA used to say it all the time, right?
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: In the NBA, guys, your best players would make two, three times, four times as much as the head coach.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: Steph Curry probably makes four times as much as Steve Kerr.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: So what you have to really depend on is guys still want to be coached hard, they still want to be held accountable, they still want to get better, and then you gotta prove to them that you can do that.
- 29:05SPEAKER_03: So now I would think even more so than when kids were quote unquote playing as amateurs, because even back in the day, cats were getting money, you know, that's right, right?
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: In a paper bag.
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: That's right, right?
- 29:18SPEAKER_03: But now it's probably even more crucial that you get good character people.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: Because they're already making millions of dollars.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: You really do have to get it's it's a really good point.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: Here, here's the biggest dilemma for coaches right now.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: All right, we're gonna pay these guys all this money right now.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: So what are they playing for?
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Like what really matters to you know, what what matters to them?
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: You know, like w does it matter to them that DePaul wins?
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: Does it matter to them that Illinois wins?
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: Does it matter to them that that Michigan wins?
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Are they playing for something bigger than their own NIL check, their own self-interest, their own so we've really tried to preach hey, you can leave a real legacy at DePa by being a part of helping this team be really good, achieve an instable A tournament berth.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: Because in an era where they're making more money than they've ever made, there's still something that's gotta allow them to play less selfish at times, to give a little more when it's hard to give more, and they've gotta attach themselves to something that's bigger than themselves when you know life's pretty good for them right now.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: They're making a lot of money and you know, playing a sport they love.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, they're living in Lincoln Park.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they got parking, I hope.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they do.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: That's gotta be part of recruiting.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: I'll give you a parking spot in Lincoln Park.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: Oh, park is but how about that?
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: Moving to Chicago, you get move into a great neighborhood.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: Are you living in the city?
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: Ten minutes from school.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's 10 minutes from DePaul.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: So you're really part of the community.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, live a 10-minute walk.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: We always we want to be able to have our players over.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: We wanted to be close, we always want to be close to campus.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: I was close to Ohio State's campus, close to Butler's campus, close to my first job, Gardner Web.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: What were the experiences at these other schools?
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: Did you enjoy Butler?
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: I really did.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: All my experiences have been great, to be honest with you.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: I was just three years at Butler, and it was really, it was it was the hardest professional decision in my life.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: I decided, you know, when Ohio State came after me, I was like, I don't think I want to do it.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: And then I had people say, You're insane.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: You you need to consider it.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: And it was just an unbelievable experience at Butler.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: We loved Indianapolis.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: Columbus was great too, seven years there.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: Um and success at each stop.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: You won Big East Coach of the Year at Butler.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: You won Big Ten Coach of the Year at the Ohio State.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, that is impressive.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: Big South.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: And Big South when you're at Gardner Webb.
- 31:39SPEAKER_03: A lot of big.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: A lot of bigs.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: So who's I don't know if anyone has ever done that.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: No.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: One Big Ten coach and Big East at Big South.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: There's been a couple cross like uh the coach of Villanova now, played it, coached at Maryland.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's a good question.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: I don't know what that trivia answer would be.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: Oh man, it's you, coach.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: Chris Holtman.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: I'll take it.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: I'll take it.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: Thanks for remembering the Big South.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: I appreciate that.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: We got another trivia question for you.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: We were talking about this earlier.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: Eddie was educating us on why they are called, you know, Catholic school being the demons.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Kind of random, kind of funny.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: Why are they the blue demons?
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: I have no idea.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: I will tell you.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: I have no idea.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: We do.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: We know.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: You do.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: I would just tell you that my father-in-law, who's a deeply spiritual man, he will not wear the demon on any of the logo, any of the stuff I send him.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: He will not, he will not wear it.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: Like he just he refuses to do.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: But I don't know the reason.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: There's a saint on there.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: DePaul, tell him.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: DePaul is a saint.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: I'll tell him that.
- 32:37SPEAKER_02: Vincent Saint Vincent DePaul.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, yes.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: That's why your uniforms are from a thrift store, aren't they?
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Second hand?
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: Blue poverty.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: The blue demons, as I understand it, they had a uh they used to wear the football team, I think, had D on their sweaters, on their uniform sweaters, sweatshirts, a blue D.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: And they were called the D men.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: D men.
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: And it rolled into demon.
- 33:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: So really it's not, it doesn't have an origin in demon, but yeah, I don't know.
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: That's something like that.
- 33:10SPEAKER_03: Maybe that your father in law.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: Tell him it's not rooted in the sorcery or dark mist discipline.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: I'll explain it to him.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: Maybe he'll feel better about it.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: Do you ever take the uh any of the players of the Wiener Circle?
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: No, I we we have not.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: Uh no, should we?
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's an experience.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: Great Chicago experience.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Tell me where else.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: Have you heard about this Wiener Circle?
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: I have not heard about Wiener Circle, I don't think.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: Should I have no idea?
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: It's on Clark and like Wrightwood.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: It's uh they always have like something on their marquee that's smart ass, very funny, typically.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: But you go in there like Conan's been in there with Triumph, the insult on and they go toe to toe.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: The employees swear at you.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: Do they really?
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: And then you swear back.
- 33:49SPEAKER_02: It's all part of the experience.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: I definitely might enjoy that.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: They were the ones that had offered free hot dogs of Caleb Williams.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: What was it?
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: If they Caleb Williams threw over whatever, you know, whatever.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: Some conditions.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: That was the place.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: Four?
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's the place.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: At some point, heck, man, where you all are rolling, it might be when DePaul makes the final four, boom, we'll give everybody uh whatever, you know.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: A couple hot dogs.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: I need to hit that spot.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: Where are what are your haunts?
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: You got any?
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, I know you're focused and you're you're pequads around.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: I love some pequads.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Pequads is great.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: We love pequads.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: Um man, we're we we live right off of Armitage.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Um, so we we're we're on all those spots.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: What's your social gifts?
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: We're coming over, Coach.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, do I have to give that?
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: Um you can probably look it up though.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, so we you know, we we go to all those spots.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I have my neighbor, he's a pilot.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: He told me, you know, there's gonna be a couple months that are when we moved up here.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: He was he's great.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: He's there'll be a couple months of the year that you're gonna really not love Chicago.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: This is a pilot.
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: He's like, you're not gonna be able to.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: You're gonna experience some turbulence in January and February.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: You won't love the months.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: I will because I'll be out of town.
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: I'm just telling you, you're not gonna love it because we were, you know, it was around weather.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: And he he's but this is the best city in the world.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: And he gave me like these months.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: I think it was like I don't know, some spring to like you know, Halloween.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: Like it was like he said it's the best city in the world.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: That's when you're not kind of off.
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: I know I know it's a 12-month gig, but you got some time to maybe hit some.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: You go to baseball games.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: We do, yeah, we do.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: I go, yeah, I'm 10 minutes from from Wrigley, so we'll go there for sure.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: I haven't been to the White Sox game yet, but I hope to get you there.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: Tease Hanley has changed my life.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: My skin has been amazing.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: Uh, we're the number one men's skincare routine in America.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: When I got here, they go, uh, we're just waiting for the podcast guest.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: We know you're here for pictures.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: For you were a model?
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you guys, he's glowing.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: In fact, Ape Bergazi was like, your skin's awesome.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: Just like I look forward to like, oh, I'm washing my face before I go to sleep.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: I think we haven't had any 40-year-olds on the podcast, and I said, I'm 50.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: And everyone goes, What?
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: Tish Hanley.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: It's the way we face the day.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: Coach, where where are you originally from?
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Uh Lexington, Kentucky.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I grew up in Lexington, Kentucky.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: Born in Cincinnati, grew up in Lexington, Kentucky.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: It's so easy to fall in love with basketball there.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: I've coached in North Carolina.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Like my first head coaching job was in care.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: So, like Carolina, Kentucky, you know, Indiana.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: Um this is a great basketball state.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: It's great for college basketball.
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: Chicago's a great basketball town.
- 36:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, we've got some.
- 36:39SPEAKER_02: And DePaul, as we took we talked about earlier, I kind of put together a top five, my top five, DePaul, all time.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: And I was talking to Dwayne about it.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I could.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: Could you come up with a five off the I don't want to put you on the spot, but the Guire's gotta be on there, right?
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, I got you gotta have a one's trick one on there.
- 37:02SPEAKER_02: One's old school.
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: Named a drill after him.
- 37:06SPEAKER_03: Oh, really?
- 37:07SPEAKER_02: Micen.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: George Micen.
- 37:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Micen drill.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: George Micen.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Is that still relevant?
- 37:12SPEAKER_03: You do the Micen drill?
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the Micen drill.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that lives on forever.
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: What's the Mican drill?
- 37:16SPEAKER_03: Just a pair of glasses and it's a it's a layup drill, right?
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: You got it.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: Up for real?
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: Most just like this right, left, right, left.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: Our big guys still do it.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: Courtesy of Ray Meyer.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: He came up with that drill.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: I went to Ray Meyer basketball camp when I was a kid.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: Did you really?
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: Right there in the middle.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: No, it was up in uh Three Lakes, Wisconsin, or Three Rivers, Wisconsin.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: It's like a seven-hour bus ride brought to the middle of nowhere.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: That's because Ray was trying to get away from the fam.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: What excuse can I?
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Oh, basketball camp.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: The common coach's thing.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: He would knock off and take kids uh water skiing.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: He hit a speed boat up there.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: That was a massive gig.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Shut down camp.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: All right, guys, you want to meet me in the boat a half hour?
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: Can you imagine this part of your gig?
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: You're taking seventh graders, water skiing.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: Water skiing drill.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: You can't do that anymore.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Do you have a camp?
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: No, no, we we've talked about doing one, but we we do not have one.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: We we have a little bit of a facility crunch right now until we build the new practice for the club.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's like any other Catholic school in the universe.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: Can't it be gym time?
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: There's a one gym for a lot of sports right now.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: So is one being built?
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they get they uh are breaking ground here soon.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: Um, like I said, our athletic versus an unbelievable job.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: You know, there's a little bit of pushback as you have, you know, when you're in a place like Chicago and you're trying to build who's pushing back?
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: Friends of the park?
- 38:40SPEAKER_03: We have an I'm gonna battle.
- 38:42SPEAKER_03: Is it Friends of the Park?
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: We're gonna be fighting them soon.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: You don't know about the noise.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: I don't, I don't, but it may be.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: But I just They're called the Ruiners.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: Oh, is that right?
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: You know what else I got on here?
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: I got uh this was got my favorite player growing up, and I think this dude is underrated, and you can go online and watch like highlight films of this guy.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: He could flat out play Rod Strickland.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Rod Strickland was awesome.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: Unbelievable.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, great guard.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Rod Rod was unbelievable.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: These guys stay connected at all?
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: Rod, we uh we hung Rod's jersey in the Rafters uh this year.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, you did?
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: He was he came back for it.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: He did a great job coaching his team too.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: He he um um he did he did a great job.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: So he yeah, he came back for it.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: It was really emotional, it was really cool, really a cool match.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: That was great.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um and you guys wore some old school jerseys this year.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: We guys had like a little ceremony with him.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: We we told Mark it was before it was before the Marquette game, um, I believe.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: And we we brought Mark in and we said, hey Mark, we're you know, we had this presentation, we're gonna wear Mark Aguirre throwback jerseys right now.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: And he started crying.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: He got so like the place meant so much to him.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: Again, that's what we're trying to tie into, is it's such a different era now.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: But if you can have players that attach them, like we say all the time, hey, if if money, if NIL money is the sole reason you're coming to DePaul, we don't come.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: Like it's gotta be something more than that.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: It's got you gotta be a like Mark Aguire Rodgers, those those guys loved David Booth, who was here for a few years.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: Those guys love DePaul.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: And uh you gotta and and we love it, and and you gotta be able to tap into that.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: So that was really cool to see.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: That is awesome.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: That's a big part of building the the whole thing, yes, right.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: You know, yes, bring the um bring the pass into it.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: Uh did I mention Terry Cummings?
- 40:32SPEAKER_02: Terry Cummings, man.
- 40:33SPEAKER_02: Terry Cummings.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: Terry Cummings.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: Uh Quentin Richardson, I got.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: Q was phenomenal.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: And then honorable mentions.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: I had Max Struess is playing well in the league.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: Max comes around a ton.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: Does he?
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: He comes around a ton.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: No, Max has been Max is kind of there's Paul Reed is in the pros right now.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: He played uh here at the Paul.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, but Max is the most well-known current NBA player.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: He's killing it right now.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: He just came back from injury.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: Max is killing it right now.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: He comes back, he's been a great supporter of the program.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: He bought beers after I bought beers for students.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, really?
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: Um, he said, Coach, I want to buy beers for students.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: If you know, I want to buy beers for the students' moms.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: We'll arrange that.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: It wasn't even during the season.
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 41:19SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 41:20SPEAKER_03: So, Max, what'd you say?
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: Is this Max again?
- 41:24SPEAKER_03: How many beers can I have?
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: So, Seaton Hall, he bought he bought it.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: It was great.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: It was great.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: Max has been phenomenal for our program.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: You guys swept Seton Hall this year, didn't you?
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we did.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we swept Marcat and uh Creighton.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: Creighton.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, dude.
- 41:36SPEAKER_03: We've had some significant wins.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: We have, we have, and we got it.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: We had a few teams that got us that we got to be ready for next year.
- 41:42SPEAKER_03: Does that even matter in the recruiting?
- 41:43SPEAKER_03: Like we are on the up rise and we beat these teams.
- 41:47SPEAKER_03: Is that or do you know what I would tell you?
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: It it it some teams it does.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: Like if you look, I I got a lot of respect for what Ben Johnson's done here at with the Bears.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: And how much did he lean into that particular rivalry in in uh Green Bay?
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: And uh you guys seem to be cut from the same cloth in a way.
- 42:09SPEAKER_02: Well, the focus and the uh not to say that you're yeah, you don't come across a super intense guy, but I could tell that you when you work, you are a disciplined dude and you have a uh you have to, yeah.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: You really have to.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: And you know, people say all the time, like um if you you know, I I think I I've heard coaches say that we just don't have time for a lot of I think I heard Kelvin Sampson say that I don't have much hobbies.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: This is my life, it's my life, 365.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: And uh you can tell that with with with Ben as well.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: But he leaned into that rivalry, and so the Marquette, you know, there's there's there's a rivalry there.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: They just had the better part of us for several years.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: So we tried to lean into that.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: So did that game mean a little bit more?
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it did.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: It did.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it did.
- 42:52SPEAKER_02: I saw Samson after they lost to Illinois.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: He had a really like touching quote.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: It was like, oh man, he said, these players, like I don't have to be their life, their life, but they are mine.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: It's really and he's one of the he's he's one of the great coaches in our game, and he means that.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: Like those guys, those guys are his life.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: He has them over like every Friday night for meal.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Like it's it it's yeah, he's he's done a hell of a job.
- 43:19SPEAKER_02: You have something like that?
- 43:20SPEAKER_02: Do you have any like ongoing stuff with your uh teams?
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: Do you ever do like a talent show with them?
- 43:24SPEAKER_02: Like you see, like a should we?
- 43:25SPEAKER_02: Uh hard knocks, like breaking the ice, like that.
- 43:28SPEAKER_02: Come in, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, we got four or five guys that think they're big time rappers, so they they probably yeah, they they probably would uh Do they rap about you ever?
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: I'm sure they do in their in their apartments.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: I'm sure they freestyle about you.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm sure they do.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a couple of them have some good imitations of their head coach.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: So uh, but yeah, they they uh we should do that.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: We should do a talent show.
- 43:51SPEAKER_01: That'd be a really cool experience that that hard knocks features super cool every year.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: We should do that.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: It's really cool.
- 43:57SPEAKER_03: Tyrone Corbin.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: Oh, wow, yeah.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: He was a player.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Tyrone Corbin.
- 44:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: He went in the MBA.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: He played in the NBA.
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: He played for Dallas for a while.
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he was in the league.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: Wilson Chandler was a really good player here.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: Played for the Knicks for a while.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: He was a really good player.
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: We're probably gonna I'm gonna piss off some form of the city.
- 44:14SPEAKER_02: You mentioned Kenny Patterson earlier.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Kenny Patterson.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: Who was the other guy I thought of?
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: Steven Howard.
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: He was a good thing.
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: Steven Howard was really good.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: There's a guy that lives in my neighborhood who I see a lot, and I don't know if he hangs out the team, but he played for DePaul a while back, and he's involved in like journalism.
- 44:29SPEAKER_02: Kenny McReynolds.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: You know Kenny's Really?
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: Kenny McReynolds.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: Kenny's great.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Kenny's great.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: He's a good dude.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's a really good dude.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I ran him with Jewel the other day.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: We live in like the same hood.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: He's always walking around Beverly Park.
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: That's one of the things I've learned.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: Like, there's so many people who maybe they didn't follow DePaul as much recently, or they had some type of attachment who've started to come back around.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: It's been really cool.
- 44:51SPEAKER_02: See, that is the thing, and that is what is automatic, and why this turnaround, I think, is being felt and is happening quickly, is because it is in Chicago's DNA.
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: DePaul is, you know, Northwestern had the thing uh Chicago's Big Ten team and people love U of I.
- 45:08SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 45:08SPEAKER_02: Um I C just they just smaller.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: Like DePaul, this is it, man.
- 45:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 45:14SPEAKER_02: And Big East.
- 45:14SPEAKER_02: Like this is this is college basketball.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: So it is really awesome to see uh what you're doing.
- 45:20SPEAKER_02: And I don't want to put you on the spot about like this program uh vision, but when you talk about we're in year one, we're in year two, how many years are you picturing?
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: For me, yeah, or or to get to our end game.
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: For you, coach, how long will you be here?
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: I want the commitment right now.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: What is the situation?
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: How long can we count on you?
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: I it's interesting.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: I I've not really shared this with anybody, but um um there, yeah, there be there were a couple schools that reached out.
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, just to even after this year.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, after this year to gauge to gauge interest.
- 45:56SPEAKER_01: And how's that work?
- 45:57SPEAKER_02: So if you are you you're under contract uh for how long?
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: Um I have uh I signed a six-year contract, I have four more four more years.
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: Well, you're allowed to talk to teams and I didn't talk to them.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: This was more they reached out to my agent.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: And uh they were you got an agent.
- 46:14SPEAKER_03: Oh, you all fancy and stuff.
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: They didn't know they could just DM you?
- 46:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean they could.
- 46:21SPEAKER_03: They could.
- 46:22SPEAKER_03: Uh they could.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: Um they didn't make a call, they just put on a marquee at the wiener circle.
- 46:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
- 46:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, you need those buffers.
- 46:29SPEAKER_01: You gotta handle it.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: It was, you know, for me in my agent call, and it was it was a pretty short conversation.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: Like, I I want to see this thing through.
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: I want to see what we can do here in the next couple years.
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: And there's some family considerations too with with my daughter being a sophomore, but as much as anything, it was like, okay, I really want to see what we can do here as a program.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: And I love our fans.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: I genuinely do.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: They've been starred for so long and they're so passionate.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: And while it's a you know, it was a smaller minority, I think it's been growing, but they're it's an unbelievable fan base right now.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: We've got great enthusiasm, great excitement.
- 47:09SPEAKER_01: So I just I told my agent, hey, listen, you know, I'm really happy here.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, kind of I don't know where those conversations would have gone, but no, I'm really happy here.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: So does your daughter play hoops?
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: She doesn't.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: She she um she loves hoops.
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: She's going to the final four with me.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: You're going?
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: We go as a coach's convention.
- 47:29SPEAKER_01: She she's going to go to the final four.
- 47:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, she knows a lot about college hoops.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: She's never played.
- 47:34SPEAKER_01: I think she the the whole my dad's a coach, everybody's gonna think I'm good, you know, and you know, that whole deal, that whole pressure.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: So she does, but she follows it really closely.
- 47:45SPEAKER_01: She watches uh college hoops.
- 47:47SPEAKER_01: I think one day she's probably gonna get in some type of potential sports media.
- 47:51SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, she she does.
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 47:54SPEAKER_02: She's gotta be loving Chicago and that neighborhood.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: She does.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: She's gotta be, yeah.
- 47:57SPEAKER_02: She does.
- 47:58SPEAKER_02: That's great.
- 47:58SPEAKER_01: You know, like moving seven years at one place, you're moving, you know, when you're 14 years old, it's hard.
- 48:03SPEAKER_01: Man, she's adjusted really well.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: Like I'm going to the zoo later.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: Just across the street, free zoo.
- 48:11SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 48:11SPEAKER_03: Like, if I get below, I'm going down to Kingston Mines.
- 48:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:14SPEAKER_03: Right there.
- 48:15SPEAKER_03: Some blues, go next door, getting some Mexican food.
- 48:18SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 48:18SPEAKER_03: You can't beat this city coach.
- 48:20SPEAKER_02: He's got to be uh enjoying the team.
- 48:22SPEAKER_02: Because you guys are entertaining too.
- 48:24SPEAKER_02: I saw this stat.
- 48:25SPEAKER_02: This was really cool.
- 48:25SPEAKER_02: I don't even know who keeps track of this, but the Paul led the nation in alley oops.
- 48:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:31SPEAKER_02: What?
- 48:31SPEAKER_02: Led the country in the lob.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: We did.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: Is that a big part of what you're doing?
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: Is that part of the scheme?
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: You know, it was it was like we had we had a we had a kid who was great at catching lobs.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: You know, it was a kid named NJ Penson.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: Like it was to be honest with you, he couldn't make threes.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: Sorry, NJ.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: He's not gonna like it if he hears this.
- 48:49SPEAKER_01: Um, so you he had he had to get behind the defense.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: He was great at catching lobs, he was a phenomenal lob catcher, lob finisher.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: So we did it.
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: I I had no idea that stat until they told me like midway through the year, coach, you don't know, you know, you're leading the country in alley oops.
- 49:03SPEAKER_01: I'm like, who cares?
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: But you know, it is it is entertaining.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: It is something there's something there, right?
- 49:10SPEAKER_03: I mean it's a recruitment tool.
- 49:12SPEAKER_03: And you like alley oop?
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 49:15SPEAKER_02: A lot of guys already trust Tiege Hanley.

- 49:47SPEAKER_02: What's your philosophy defense?
- 49:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, are you strictly a man?
- 49:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so we this year we we've there's some things we got to get better at next year, but this year, a huge jump defense.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: We were 33rd best defense in the country this year.
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: That's why we're winning games.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's why really that's why we won games.
- 50:03SPEAKER_01: Um we had a great defensive staff.
- 50:05SPEAKER_01: I heard a young man from uh that was with the Detroit Pistons, and before that, the Boston Celtics, NBA guy.
- 50:11SPEAKER_01: He's great defensively.
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: Our staff did a great job.
- 50:14SPEAKER_01: We built this great defense that kind of helped us stay in games.
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: We got to get better offensively next year to do what we want to do, but we got to keep our defense what it is.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: Man-to-man defense 95% of the time.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 95% of the time.
- 50:27SPEAKER_03: So any any particular type of player that you want to get on this squad for next season, or you have the player that you need.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: No, we got five more to get.
- 50:35SPEAKER_01: We need shooting, skill, shooting, skill, and size.
- 50:39SPEAKER_01: You know, like we we need we need more size with who we're graduating, and we need shooting and skill without getting too much in the weeds.
- 50:47SPEAKER_01: Those are kind of things we're looking for right now.
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: We need some uh some upgrade, and you know, we just need some offensive ability.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: And we graduated four guys, all who played quite a bit for us.
- 50:55SPEAKER_03: Oh what's more important, or is this a moot point?
- 50:58SPEAKER_03: What's more important, skill or conditioning?
- 51:01SPEAKER_01: Who uh conditioning's critical.
- 51:04SPEAKER_01: Like they they are like conditioning, you know.
- 51:08SPEAKER_01: One of the things I I I think Rick Petino may be, and I've been fortunate.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: I've coached against Coach K, Roy Williams a lot.
- 51:16SPEAKER_01: Talked about Izzo.
- 51:18SPEAKER_01: Um and I've been fortunate to to beat some of those coaches.
- 51:21SPEAKER_01: Coach K was number one in the country when we played him when I was at Ohio State, and we we beat him with uh Bancaro, so that that group right there.
- 51:30SPEAKER_02: Was that in Columbus?
- 51:32SPEAKER_02: It was in Columbus, yeah.
- 51:33SPEAKER_01: It was in Columbus.
- 51:33SPEAKER_01: They had just beaten Gonzaga and they came back, they were number one in the country.
- 51:36SPEAKER_01: And uh and we got him.
- 51:38SPEAKER_01: We had an Illinois kid, EJ Liddell, who had a game winner, banged the game winner uh with like 30 seconds to go to to get that that win.
- 51:47SPEAKER_01: Like he's a phenotyp, like Coach K is the but Rick, I think is he may be up there in terms of the best coach I've coached against, primarily because I've never coached against a a team uh whose whose kids consistently play harder, excuse me, than Rick's.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's phenomenal.
- 52:08SPEAKER_01: Um he he's the best.
- 52:10SPEAKER_02: And can you tell when you're okay, I we've seen St.
- 52:13SPEAKER_02: John's, we've seen film of them.
- 52:15SPEAKER_02: We're playing the game, like, oh man, this guy's made adjustments.
- 52:18SPEAKER_02: He is showing me something completely different.
- 52:21SPEAKER_02: Or halftime adjustments.
- 52:23SPEAKER_02: Is that a real thing?
- 52:24SPEAKER_02: Are these people like in the game, they're noticing mismatches, trends, and they switch?
- 52:29SPEAKER_02: So you're seeing, oh man, this guy is Yes.
- 52:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like adjustments, it's a little bit like fans kind of get into adjustments more than what actually happens.
- 52:37SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you just gotta play harder, more physical, better, then go out and make an adjustment.
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: But there are subtle adjustments that probably fans, for example, like you could be hedging a ball screen for 25 minutes of the game, and then for three minutes you're gonna play the ball screen.
- 52:54SPEAKER_01: Hedging ball screen means putting two on the ball, where you got a big guy hedging the ball screen, and then for a two or three minute stretch right now, you're gonna switch, and it can completely change the tenor of the game.
- 53:06SPEAKER_01: And and those are you know, those are some of the things like Iso was great at some of the things the greatest coach has been able to do in moments like that.
- 53:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:17SPEAKER_02: When you're down at half and you're going in a locker room, are you a read in the moment or are you always like one speed?
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: Total read in the moment.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: Total read, yeah.
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: It's a total.
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: This is a big EQ business for for you have to be, you have to have a degree as a coach of you have to you have to have real emotional intelligence.
- 53:39SPEAKER_02: I think if you're Did you study psychology?
- 53:41SPEAKER_02: I did.
- 53:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I did.
- 53:42SPEAKER_02: Like if you're gonna be effective.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: Are you playing games with us right now?
- 53:47SPEAKER_02: Is this whole interview a side on?
- 53:50SPEAKER_01: No, this is the real thing.
- 53:52SPEAKER_01: This is just me being genuine, but yeah, I did I did study psychology, but it's critical.
- 53:57SPEAKER_01: Like that that uh component of coaching is real, it's it's it's really critical.
- 54:02SPEAKER_01: So when we're down at half, it is very much read.
- 54:06SPEAKER_01: I have to be able to read the room.
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: You have to be able to read, is this an element of we're not playing hard enough, tough enough, physical enough, not detailed enough?
- 54:14SPEAKER_01: If that's the the case, they're gonna hear from me and our coaches.
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: Or is this a situation where we got a couple guys struggling with confidence because their offense isn't what it needs to be right now?
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: Or we got a couple guys, you know, we've had a tough stretch of games where we've lost two in a row and they're just they're feeling a certain way, and they don't they don't need like you can't go at them like that.
- 54:37SPEAKER_02: You know, so they'll crumble, they might even get uh feel heavier.
- 54:41SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 54:41SPEAKER_01: But if it's selfishness, if it's a lack of effort, if it's that kind of stuff, that's when you're gonna see me get really heated.
- 54:48SPEAKER_01: And you talk to them one-on-one as well.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: That's a lot in today's you know, some guys you can't you can't dress down in front of the team anymore.
- 54:57SPEAKER_01: Like it's hard.
- 54:58SPEAKER_01: You know, we have ever we have every one of our players do a personality, um, they have a whole kind of a personality evaluation on the front end coming.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and recruits do.
- 55:09SPEAKER_02: So it's a whole profile.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: So you who you can rip into?
- 55:12SPEAKER_02: Like tell me who I can tear into.
- 55:14SPEAKER_02: Oh, exactly.
- 55:15SPEAKER_02: Green light on this one?
- 55:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's a go.
- 55:18SPEAKER_03: He's gonna get I can go Bobby Knight on this guy.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: And some guys you can't because they're gonna shut down.
- 55:24SPEAKER_01: It's like a 10-page profile on each place.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: It's accurate, huh?
- 55:27SPEAKER_02: It's pretty accurate, yeah.
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: It's pretty accurate.
- 55:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, based on my experience, it's been it's been pretty good.
- 55:31SPEAKER_01: It's a service we got.
- 55:32SPEAKER_01: Purdue's the one that started it about uh eight, nine years ago.
- 55:37SPEAKER_01: Wow for all the recruits.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, painter starter.
- 55:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I saw him talk about recruiting the other day, and he was like, I used to try and sell them on Purdue.
- 55:43SPEAKER_02: I used to try and sell them on this.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: I did now I just tell them the truth.
- 55:46SPEAKER_02: He does like you may not get you know a bunch of minutes, or you might not take 12 shots.
- 55:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, you're gonna have a role.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: He's being dead honest in that.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: He's a huge Cubs fan.
- 55:57SPEAKER_01: He's here all the time.
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, is he?
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, huge Cubs fan.
- 55:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's got to place it right down by Wrigley.
- 56:01SPEAKER_01: Um he's dead on on that.
- 56:03SPEAKER_01: Like he's that's exactly how Matt is.
- 56:05SPEAKER_01: He will because we've recruited against him, and they and we have guys have said, yeah, they kind of told me I wouldn't play much at Purdue.
- 56:10SPEAKER_01: Well, it's coach being honest with you right there.
- 56:12SPEAKER_01: You know, he's re he's real and genuine with that.
- 56:14SPEAKER_01: Matt's Matt's the best.
- 56:16SPEAKER_03: Even now, and then some players would choose to go there anyway, or yeah.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: Some players do.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: I think that's why he's had success, because they'll choose, because they've won so much, they'll choose to go there anyway, and just do what they used to do in the old school, where they just wait their turn.
- 56:31SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: You know, just kind of wait their turn and practice, and no one really wants to wait their turn anymore.
- 56:36SPEAKER_01: But you kind of go to Purdue in some of those situations.
- 56:39SPEAKER_01: No one like he redshirted a I will say this.
- 56:42SPEAKER_01: I think we're gonna play them next year, by the way, which would be no one else knows this, but be we'll say, exclusive news on the Pem game.
- 56:50SPEAKER_02: So like a non-conference before the start of the year?
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in a tournament, or just I think it's very real possibility we could be playing them in a uh in a non-conference game.
- 56:59SPEAKER_01: It won't be it'd be in a neutral side, it won't be at Win Trust.
- 57:02SPEAKER_02: But uh is this part of the story you want to be telling kids when you're recruiting them?
- 57:06SPEAKER_02: Like, hey, we're gonna we're gonna play some tough non-conference games.
- 57:08SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 57:09SPEAKER_01: And and so who else are you looking at?
- 57:11SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: Uh we have uh we have an ACC opponent that that uh I think the contracts got a good sign, but they were in the NCAA tournament, they're a top 40 program.
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: Uh we have a home and home, in other words, they're playing at Win Trust next year and we'll go to their place the following year.
- 57:26SPEAKER_01: We want to be able to play in the non-conference a couple top 20 caliber, top 15 caliber programs.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: We really do.
- 57:35SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's hard because we have to get ourselves to a certain level to where teams will want to do that.
- 57:40SPEAKER_01: If you're not at a certain level, they're not gonna want to play you.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: If that makes sense.
- 57:44SPEAKER_01: Does that make sense?
- 57:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:45SPEAKER_02: And then you'll get to a point where they want to play you because you'll you'll bite them.
- 57:47SPEAKER_02: You'll get them.
- 57:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like the advantage for them right now is like we need to get good enough.
- 57:52SPEAKER_01: I think we've gotten good enough to where, like, okay, yeah, uh, we'll we'll we'll play a DePaul in a neutral site setting.
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: Uh it's what we've got to get to.
- 58:00SPEAKER_01: Um, and our our third year will be the hardest schedule we've played, which is by intent.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:05SPEAKER_03: You know what's crazy?
- 58:07SPEAKER_03: You know who plays a lot of top programs and you never think about Chicago State.
- 58:12SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 58:12SPEAKER_03: They play a lot of like they play big 10 teams.
- 58:15SPEAKER_03: They do like Chicago State.
- 58:17SPEAKER_03: Do you know why?
- 58:18SPEAKER_03: No.
- 58:21SPEAKER_01: The money?
- 58:22SPEAKER_01: The money.
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: Like that's the those programs.
- 58:25SPEAKER_01: We played Chicago State this year.
- 58:27SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 58:27SPEAKER_01: Those programs subsidize their programs by same thing in football.
- 58:32SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: Like you see teams make a million dollars on one game when you go play at Notre Dame.
- 58:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:38SPEAKER_03: If you're uh northern Illinois.
- 58:40SPEAKER_03: But they know they're gonna get shellac, but the money.
- 58:43SPEAKER_03: The money.
- 58:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 58:44SPEAKER_03: The money.
- 58:44SPEAKER_03: I would like to, I mean, I know DePaul and everything is Northside, but I would like to see Chicago state, you know, rise.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: I don't know if that's ever going to happen.
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: I would like to see Chicago be a state.
- 58:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 58:58SPEAKER_02: We have our own just break off from the world, maybe a nation.
- 59:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the United States of Chicago.
- 59:03SPEAKER_02: Maybe a whole country.
- 59:05SPEAKER_02: Well, I don't know.
- 59:06SPEAKER_02: Wasn't Craig Hodges the head coach of Chicago State at some point?
- 59:09SPEAKER_02: He was.
- 59:09SPEAKER_02: I think he was.
- 59:10SPEAKER_01: I did not know that.
- 59:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: What were you about to say?
- 59:13SPEAKER_01: I said you guys talk politics here, but I probably shouldn't, I shouldn't uh No, let it flow.
- 59:17SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 59:18SPEAKER_01: I mean How did Coach lose his job at DePa?
- 59:25SPEAKER_01: Well, um No, Chicago, yeah, those those smaller schools, they got a tough, they got a tough road, so they play um, but I'm with you.
- 59:34SPEAKER_01: I think Chicago State hired a good coach.
- 59:36SPEAKER_01: They just hired him last year.
- 59:37SPEAKER_01: I think we may play him again uh this year.
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: But yeah, they make a lot of money off of those games.
- 59:41SPEAKER_02: So whose coaching tree would you say you're uh most associated with?
- 59:46SPEAKER_02: Because I was trying to figure that out, and I really can't put you on a on a tree.
- 59:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a really good question.
- 59:53SPEAKER_01: So um I really don't so I worked for the guy I played for at Taylor and uh university, and the guy I worked for was phenomenal.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_01: Uh he's since passed away of Alzheimer's, but he was a phenomenal Hall of Fame coach.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I always kind of he's always been my guy.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_01: But when I got when I went to Butler, I got kind of associated with with Brad uh Stevens and what what he had done.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_01: Um that guy's phenomenal.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_03: He's really good.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's really good.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's he's great at everything he does.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_01: Um great at everything he does.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I don't know if there's really one uh, you know, I I didn't work for I didn't play, you know, a lot of these a lot of coaches nowadays like they play at Tennessee uh and then work for that guy and then get their own job and you can see they're in that that tree.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, that's cool.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, you really have made this on your own, and not that that's what it takes, but you know, yeah, the networking is always a big part of it.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_02: It is, and uh just to see what you're doing, man.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_02: And you don't look stressed out, you look phenomenal.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_02: How about that's the thing too?
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_02: These coaches, they're you're talking about Ben Johnson, these guys are in shape.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_02: They showed the NFL coaches yesterday, they're at a the Phoenix meeting, yeah.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_02: All of them together.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, do you remember what coaches used to look like?
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_03: Overweight, smoking, drinking, dying or fitch.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh man.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: Doug Mo like these guys on the sidelines.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.

- 1:01:51SPEAKER_02: It's the way we face the day.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_03: But like you said though, I mean, the the job is every day of the year now, and there's so much money involved.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_03: How much now?
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_03: Because N because NIL, what what is the upside and the downside to NIL?
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_01: The the um the downside is there's no regulations right now.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_02: So I could call This is making my mom very upset, by the way.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_02: Is that right?
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_01: Just can't wrap her head around it.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: Like, here's the downside.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_01: When the portal opens on the 7th, I could call a kid who goes in the transfer portal and he's gonna say, Call my agent, coach.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_01: I'll say, Okay, I'll call your agent.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_01: That agent's gonna get on the phone with me.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: He's gonna say, Okay, Johnny has four offers right now between any number.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_01: He could say between 500 to 700, or he could say between one to one point five.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: And he here's the deal.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_01: And I'll say, Okay, what schools are they?
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_01: And say, Well, I can't say, coach.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_01: I I can't I can't say.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_01: Well, how am I supposed to know that's a real legitimate offer?
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_03: Oh uh.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_03: You know, because if he says Chicago State, you know he's lying.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, I mean, I don't know.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_02: Well, I heard they're trying to get this like resolve this, that they should have to divulge like what these offers are.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_02: Which is only fairly are they real?
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_01: There has to be more transparency.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_01: You probably have to do like some type of salary cap at some point, uh, or league salary cap.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_02: Um I saw John Calipari bitching about it.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_02: And if you see John Caliperi acting like stuff's just shady, yeah, then it's it's then it's shade.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_02: He's got unbelievable ideas.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_02: This is way too everyone could be shady.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_01: When it's too dark for John, you know.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_01: He's got unbelievable ideas.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_01: He he really does.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_01: Like he he's a guy who, like, when you hear him talk, like he really does have unbelievable ideas about how to make this situation better.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: And that's what everybody called it.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_01: That's what so that's the downside.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_01: The upside is you got more good players staying in college.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_01: For longer.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when I was at when I was at Ohio State, we had guys that if they could sniff the second round, they would leave.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_01: Any of that was a coach.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_01: Well, listen, I'm making I make no money here.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_01: A G League two two-way contract's$500,000.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_01: I I'll at least take that and keep developing.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_03: A lot of them are coming from families.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_03: They need money.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_03: They need money.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they need money.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_01: So I every year I would I would lose like good players.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_01: Those players aren't leaving college now.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_01: Those players are making$2 million a year, a million and a half a year.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_01: They're staying in college.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_01: So now you have more good players.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: The product, the play is at a higher level.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_01: And you have fans who, you know, if they stay at the same school, we're like, oh yeah, man, I've watched the David Booth of the World for four years.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_01: You know, I've watched those guys for more years.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_01: That's that's the upside of NIO.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_01: And I'm I'm all for it.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_01: The NCAA, they kicked this can down the road for too long, to be honest with you.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_01: And the and the league conference or the conferences, dude, they kicked it down the road too long.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_01: Kids should have been making name, image, and likeness money way before.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_03: Because the coaches and the administration were making a fortune, and these kids were working basically for free.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_03: Or if they if they if somebody found out they somebody bought them a hamburger, they're getting suspended.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_03: That was ridiculous.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_03: It was ridiculous.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_03: It's ridiculous.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_03: Hand over fist.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_01: I was making money.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_01: Administrations were making money.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_01: We were pouring it in facilities.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_01: It should have gone to the players well before it did.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, remember like uh the O'Bannon brother?
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_02: Like going up.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_02: He's the one that started the whole thing.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_02: Well, it seems to be go ahead.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_02: Go ahead, Brian.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_02: No, I'm saying it seems to be in a good place right now.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_02: Um obviously you're working out, but just the game itself.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_02: It's people bitch about the NBA or they complain like, oh, I don't watch the NBA as much.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_02: It's all threes and kick outs and drive and kick, same deal.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_02: The college game, like the level of play, and dude, this tournament has been a blast.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_02: Now we talked a little bit about this before we started.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_02: the this sh this uh gap widening between the smaller the mid major to like the major program seems to be widening a little bit.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_02: But just the the level of play is impressive.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_01: These kids can really hoop really impressive.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_01: You're still going to see upsets in the tournament.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_01: You're still going to see mid-majors beat uh higher seeds in the tournament.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_01: I do not think that's going to change.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_01: You may not see quite as many.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_01: You may not see quite as many because of the but it's a 40 minute game.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_01: They're college kids, they're young kids.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_01: Like you feel the pressure of a game like that in those settings right now and you're you're the underdog and you're feeling it you're the heavy favorite there's still going to be upsets.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_01: I I guarantee it in the coming years.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_01: But is you could say is there a widening gap because of the money potentially.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_01: You also saw a team like Miami of Ohio in mid-major that won 31 straight games this year.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_01: So there are still going to be those stories as well.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_03: How much has illegal sports betting affected college basketball and just and sports in general oh we get yeah like it's real.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_01: I mean I'll never forget like when it first started happening our players who would get it was Butler or really more Ohio State because that's really when it came a huge wave would get crushed if they didn't play well and it affected you know the outcome like the social media like vitriol around gambling is a real thing for players.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_01: Players and coaches I mean it's a real the vitriol around you didn't you didn't get the spread or whatever.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_01: Like it's a real thing.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_01: It's an added dynamic for for players that uh I don't you know they didn't shock them a bit like oh this is new yes like why why is this you know you gotta explain to them why why is this guy coming at me coach for like they don't they have no affiliation to such and such whoever you know whoever I coached.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_01: Well let me explain to you why he had a lot of money on the game and he's pissed off and he's got to let it out and but you're on he sees that you're on social media and that's where he's gonna go to so yeah it's a it's an ad it's a it's just a and I always been great um you know you we can argue about about gambling but but there's a lot of things to just make being a college athlete it's more complicated than what it was.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_01: Matt had a great Matt Painter had a great comment the other day it's really true.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_01: When you when he played bad at Purdue when he when he played bad at Purdue he had to wait until the next day to read the paper and say anybody say anything critical about him.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_01: I mean our guys they got to go to the locker room and if they look at their phone the only place we don't allow phones is team meals.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_01: You cannot have a phone team meal.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_01: But you know after the game our guys you know if they turn on social media which we encourage them not to you know they're gonna get they're gonna get all a wide spectrum of things.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_02: Are they allowed to look at their phone at halftime?
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_02: No okay no I had a conversation with a guy who coaches in the NBA and he said that that was a huge shift like we'll go into the locker room at halftime and guys are on their phone.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_02: They are and they're looking at like and you're trying to be to get them to listen to you.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah right and they're making more money than you and they're that's a real thing in the NBA.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah that's a real thing in the NBA from what I've heard too is guys will immediately go to their phones.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_01: You know we have yeah yeah we don't we don't allow phones in the locker room at you know uh at that point man you are so strict no that's great it's for their own listen you are a busy man uh we've had you here for for quite a while I I want to wrap things up um you mentioned you you love in Chicago could you just tell us a date night somewhere you like to take your wife you're going out otherwise we're gonna give you some uh Chicago Rex well I'd love the Chicago Rex Armitage Alehouse so that's that's kind of been a good place for for my wife and I to go uh enjoy a date night um it's close um you ever go to Chicago Bagel Authority I have that's a good spot right that's that's that's a great spot not for a date night but for like I just popped in my head I'm like I'm just what else is around my wife has a little bit higher expectations than that tonight honey bagels summer house is good maybe she doesn't maybe she'd be good with that I don't know over the years maybe um you ever go to summer house yeah we go there that's great yeah that's a great spot we we go there we go there as a family those those are those are good wrecks any other good wrecks yeah I'll I'll give you some more off off air MacArthur's on on Madison Soul Food okay oh yeah yeah all right we're a big fan of the lettuce spots let us entertain you we had the the Marlon brothers on early um what else is good well Chicago Cut is always great a good spot that's great and then we and Joe Flam he's been on here he's got some great restaurants here in uh West Loop he's got like three spots ill Carchofo that's one of them okay oh and the one I love Rosemary is is his original spot that's a good place.
