- 0:12Aloha. No, I'm not in a whole why I
- 0:15just wouldn't mind being in Hawaii.
- 0:16How are you friend? Lovely to have your company.
- 0:20Welcome to another new week Monday.
- 0:22Um and they what a day I hope that this Monday finds you doing
- 0:26well full of Well, optimism about the week or daydreaming
- 0:31about a tropical island somewhere or somewhere in
- 0:33between haha. Good to have your company either
- 0:36way DNA, this is the week that you and I continue reading
- 0:41through the book of Exodus and we have arrived at the point
- 0:44where we get front row seats, to the formation of a Nation.
- 0:48This doesn't happen very often over the next four chapters that
- 0:51we read this week we are going to hear about what God is
- 0:56telling them and this really is the blueprint.
- 0:59For forming, what it means to be an Israelite person because you
- 1:03got to remember, they rocked up in Egypt as a family, right?
- 1:0660-yard people and then they grew and grew and grew and then
- 1:11became enslaved for hundreds of years until the point that they
- 1:15were just recently released. And so now for the first time
- 1:19they think, what does it look like to be a people group to be
- 1:23a holy nation? And so, God sets out for them,
- 1:26the way that he would have them. And this is actually the, the
- 1:32origins in the blueprints for the way the Western World works.
- 1:35And so this will all sound quite familiar, but at the time as far
- 1:39as literature of the ancient near East goes, this is radical
- 1:43stuff. Really, really incredible to
- 1:46hear God's spirit imbued into this document, which talks about
- 1:52what it would look like to be a just people.
- 1:56So let us settle in and And hear what God has to say as he sets
- 2:01up this New Covenant with his people.
- 2:03And on Thursday, we will hear how the people respond.
- 2:07So let's continue on this journey together eating
- 2:10together, Exodus 21, These are the regulations, you
- 2:25must present to Israel. If you buy a Hebrew slave he
- 2:30must serve for no more than six years.
- 2:33Set him free in the seventh year and he will owe you nothing for
- 2:36his freedom. If he was single, when he became
- 2:38your slave he shall leave single but if he was married before he
- 2:42became a slave then his wife must be freed with him.
- 2:47If his master gave him a wife, while he was a slave and they
- 2:50had Sons or daughters, then only the man will be free in the
- 2:54seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to
- 2:57his master. But the slave May declare, I
- 3:01love my master, my wife and my children.
- 3:03I don't want to go free. If he does this, his master must
- 3:08present him before God, then his master must take him to the door
- 3:12or doorpost and publicly pierce his ear with an awl.
- 3:17After that, the slave will serve his master for life.
- 3:21When a man sells, his daughter as a slave, she will not be free
- 3:26at the end of six years as the men are.
- 3:28If she does not satisfy her owner, he must allow her to be
- 3:32bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell
- 3:36her to foreigners. Since he is the one who broke
- 3:39the contract with her, but if the slave owner, arranges for
- 3:43her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave, but
- 3:48as a daughter, If a man, who is married a slave wife, takes
- 3:53another wife for himself, he must not neglect the rights of
- 3:57the first wife to food clothing and sexual intimacy, if he fails
- 4:02in any of these three obligations, she may leave as a
- 4:05free woman without making any payment.
- 4:11Anyone who assaults and kills, another person must be put to
- 4:14death, but if it was simply an accident permitted by God, I
- 4:18will appoint a place of Refuge where the Slayer can run for
- 4:21safety. However, if someone deliberately
- 4:25kills another person, then the Slayer must be dragged even from
- 4:29my Ulta and be put to death. Anyone who's strikes father or
- 4:34mother must be put to death, kidnappers must be put to death.
- 4:39Whether they are caught in possession of their victims or
- 4:42have already sold them as slaves.
- 4:44Anyone who dishonors father or mother must be put to death?
- 4:49Now supposed to men quarrel and one hits the other with a stone
- 4:53or Fist and the injured person does not die but is confined to
- 4:57bed if he is later able to walk outside again.
- 5:01Even with a Touch, the assailant will not be punished, but must
- 5:05compensate his victim for lost wages and provide for his full
- 5:09recovery. If a man beats his male or
- 5:12female slave with the club and the slave dies, as a result, the
- 5:16owner must be punished but if the slave recovers within a day
- 5:20or two, then the owner shall not be punished.
- 5:23Since the slave is his property. That's opposed to Men of
- 5:27fighting and in the process that accidentally strike a pregnant
- 5:31woman, so she gives birth prematurely if no further injury
- 5:36results, the man who struck the woman.
- 5:38Must pay the amount of compensation, the woman's
- 5:41husband demands and the judges approve. but if there is further
- 5:46injury, the punishment must match the injury a life for a
- 5:50life, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand,
- 5:56a foot for a foot, a burn for a bone, a wound for a wound, a
- 6:01bruise for a bruise If a man hits his male or female slave in
- 6:07the eye and the eye is blinded, he must let the slave Go free to
- 6:11compensate for the eye. And if a man knocks out the
- 6:14tooth of his male or female slave, he must let the slave Go
- 6:18free to compensate for the tooth.
- 6:21If an ox gauze, a man or woman to death.
- 6:24The ox must be stoned and its flesh.
- 6:27May not be eaten in such a case. However, the owner will not be
- 6:31held liable, but suppose the ox had a reputation for Goring and
- 6:36the owner had been informed but failed to keep it under control.
- 6:40If the ox then kills someone it must be stoned.
- 6:44And the owner must also be put to death.
- 6:47However, the dead person's relatives, May accept payment to
- 6:50compensate. The loss of life, the owner of
- 6:53the ox May redeem his life by paying whatever is demanded.
- 6:59The same regulation applies if the ox Gore's a boy or a girl.
- 7:03But if the ox scores are slave, either male or female, the
- 7:07animals owner must pay the slaves, owner, Thirty silver
- 7:11coins, and the ox must be stoned.
- 7:14Suppose someone digs are uncovers a pit and fails to
- 7:18cover it and then an ox or a donkey falls into it.
- 7:22The owner of the pit must pay full compensation to the owner
- 7:25of the animal. But then he gets to keep the
- 7:28dead animal. If someone's Ox injures and
- 7:32neighbors ox and the injured oxidized, then the two owners
- 7:36must sell the live ox and divide the price equally between them.
- 7:41They must also divide the dead animal, but if the ox had a
- 7:44reputation for Goring yet its own a failed to keep it under
- 7:48control, he must pay full compensation alive Ox for a dead
- 7:52one. But he may keep the dead ox.
- 8:07Lord, as we hear all of these ideas about what Justice looks
- 8:12like and what a people look like that, respect the rights of
- 8:17others. This sounds so familiar because
- 8:21so much of our world is based on your wisdom because your wisdom
- 8:25is well wise and kind. Thank you that even though to
- 8:35our modern ears the regulations around women slaves.
- 8:39Sounds archaic and barbaric. This was a huge step forward.
- 8:44Actually proclaiming rights. For those who had no lights,
- 8:49thank you for revealing your heart, that always looks to give
- 8:53rights and give voice to those that have none help us to
- 8:57continue your work of giving a voice to those whose voices.
- 9:01Voice can't be heard. We thank you for giving us the
- 9:06gift of your Justice. We just are so humbled by you
- 9:11and we love you and we worship you and it's in Jesus name that
- 9:15we pray. Amen.
