Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Nurses getting punched and yelled at in EDS. This is
- 0:02Speaker 1: still a problem here. Seven and a half thousand assaults
- 0:05Speaker 1: reported last year. That's no improvement on the year before that.
- 0:08Speaker 1: David Wills is Nurses Society Director with us this morning. David,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Good morning, Kira. What sort of assaults are we talking
- 0:15Speaker 1: about here?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Well, it partly depends, but it's everything from verbal abuse
- 0:20Speaker 2: to someone splitting, someone biting, someone pushing, occasionally effectual assault,
- 0:26Speaker 2: the whole gamut. I mean, most of the time it's
- 0:28Speaker 2: not causing major physical but of course it's stressing and
- 0:32Speaker 2: distracting for staff.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Do the nurses just I mean, you must just want
- 0:35Speaker 1: to not treat.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Them that sort of situation does arise, but of course
- 0:41Speaker 3: it's not, and in fact, there will be had occasions
- 0:44Speaker 3: where treatment will be impacted and people are required to
- 0:47Speaker 3: behave and cooperate and treatment might be temporarily.
- 0:51Speaker 2: But you can't clearly can't not treat someone in an
- 0:54Speaker 2: emergency department, both for ethical and legal reasons, and that's
- 0:57Speaker 2: not what hospital staff are about anyhow, better treat people.
- 1:01Speaker 1: You're going to bring in facial recognition technology. This is
- 1:03Speaker 1: going to stop catch people before they come in. Presumably
- 1:07Speaker 1: are you all right with that? I mean, that will help.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I can't really speak to that because I don't know
- 1:12Speaker 2: the details of it. What has happened, of course, is
- 1:14Speaker 2: that and it is a good move. There has been
- 1:17Speaker 2: a significant boost in the number of security staff, particularly
- 1:21Speaker 2: in hospitally deeds and in the larger ones they have
- 1:24Speaker 2: dedicated security staff and that certainly has helped. I think also,
- 1:30Speaker 2: although it is an increasing problem and a growing problem,
- 1:33Speaker 2: one that's been there for quite a while, I do
- 1:36Speaker 2: think that some of the increased particularly showing an EDS,
- 1:40Speaker 2: is because staff are no longer tolerating this and they
- 1:43Speaker 2: are therefore documenting it better, and that is showing that.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I think it's partly explained some of the right.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Yeah, good David, I'm glad they're doing that. David Wills
