- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Wednesday.
- 0:16It is the 5th of July and I am so grateful that you have made
- 0:22space in your day for me to join you now.
- 0:26If you have had many conversations with me, you might
- 0:29know that I am a little bit of a pencil nerd.
- 0:33I do just love love pencils. They have the greatest thing.
- 0:38They've been around for well over 450 years.
- 0:41But 201 years ago, on July 5th, the mechanical pencil was born.
- 0:48And this is Mechanical Pencil Day.
- 0:51The old pacer Clickety click? Not quite.
- 0:54A sharpening romantic stick of wood and graphite, but still
- 0:59pretty magical. So if you're a pencil user,
- 1:03particularly a mechanical pencil, today is your kind of
- 1:07day mistakes. Ah, just grab your eraser and
- 1:11erase them. Too easy for that is really
- 1:17beside the point, isn't it? We are.
- 1:19Moving through this story, hearing how Naomi and her
- 1:23daughterinlaw Ruth are finding their way navigating the
- 1:27kindness of this relative of theirs who is showing an
- 1:32interest in Ruth. So let us continue the story as
- 1:36it becomes very interesting in Ruth Chapter 3.
- 1:52One day, Naomi said to Ruth. My daughter, it's time that I
- 1:57found a permanent home for you so that you will be provided
- 2:01for. Boaz is a close relative of
- 2:03ours, and he's been very kind by letting you gather grain with
- 2:07his young women. Tonight he will be winnowing
- 2:11barley at the threshing floor. Now do as I tell you.
- 2:16Take a bath and put on perfume. And dress in your nicest
- 2:20clothes. Then go to the threshing floor.
- 2:23But don't let Boaz see you until he has finished eating and
- 2:26drinking. Be sure to notice where he lies
- 2:30down. Then go and uncover his feet and
- 2:33lie down there. He will tell you what to do.
- 2:38I will do everything as you say, Ruth replied.
- 2:41So she went down to the threshing floor that night and
- 2:45followed the instructions of her motherinlaw.
- 2:48After Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good
- 2:51spirits, he lay down at the far end of the pile of grain and
- 2:55went to sleep. Then Ruth came quietly,
- 2:59uncovered his feet, and lay down.
- 3:02Around midnight, Boaz suddenly woke up and turned over.
- 3:06He was surprised to find a woman laying at his feet.
- 3:10Who are you? He asked.
- 3:13I am your servant, Ruth, she replied.
- 3:16Spread the corner of your covering over me for you and my
- 3:20family. Redeemer does Lord bless you, my
- 3:24daughter? Beau has exclaimed.
- 3:27You are showing even more family loyalty now than you did before,
- 3:32for you have not gone after a younger man, whether rich or
- 3:35poor. Now, don't worry about a thing,
- 3:39my daughter. I will do what is necessary.
- 3:42For everyone in town knows you are a virtuous woman.
- 3:46But while it's true that I am one of your family redeemers,
- 3:49there is another man who is more closely related to you than I
- 3:53am. Stay here tonight, and in the
- 3:55morning I will talk to him. If he is willing to redeem you
- 4:00very well, let him marry you. But if he is not, then as surely
- 4:05as the Lord lives, I will redeem you myself.
- 4:09Now lie down here until morning. So, Ruth, lay at boaz's feet
- 4:14until the morning. But she got up before it was
- 4:17light enough for people to recognize each other, for Boaz
- 4:21had said, no. One must know that a woman was
- 4:23here at the threshing floor. Then Boaz said to her, bring
- 4:28your cloak and spread it out. He measured 6 scoops of barley
- 4:32into the cloak and placed it on her back.
- 4:35Then he returned to the town. When Ruth went back to her
- 4:39motherinlaw, Naomi asked what happened.
- 4:42My daughter. Ruth told Naomi everything Boaz
- 4:46had done for her, and she added he gave me these six scoops of
- 4:50barley and said don't go back to your motherinlaw emptyhanded.
- 4:55Then Naomi said to her, Just be patient, my daughter, until we
- 5:00hear what happens. The man won't rest until he has
- 5:04settled things today. Lord, we may not understand
- 5:18these customs of this particular time and place that we read in
- 5:22the story, but we understand loyalty and we understand
- 5:27kindness. Lord, as we go about our lives,
- 5:33I pray that you would continue to shape us, that you would
- 5:37continue to fill us with your spirit, and that the fruits of
- 5:42your spirit would grow in us so that.
- 5:46When we encounter others, we are patient, kind and self
- 5:52controlled and gentle and all the other beautiful fruits that
- 5:58your spirit would develop in us. We just adore you because we
- 6:06know that all these fruits are your characters.
- 6:10You are a good good God, our family Redeemer.
- 6:15Our world's Redeemer. Our universe is Redeemer.
- 6:19And we love you, and we're so grateful for everything you do
- 6:23for us. And it's in your name we pray
- 6:26Jesus. Amen.
