- 0:00Speaker 1: It's practically an instruction video on how to not get
- 0:03Speaker 1: out of a lie. It's one more thing. I'm strong Andy.
- 0:07Speaker 2: One more thing.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I found Tim Walls trying to explain away his big
- 0:16Speaker 1: lie about being in China. One of the funniest things
- 0:20Speaker 1: I've ever heard. And so we're going to play that
- 0:22Speaker 1: again for you here in a little bit.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah, we're all talking about how soon it will be irrelevant,
- 0:28Speaker 2: but we wanted to hear it one more time.
- 0:30Speaker 1: It's just so good. But Katie, you have something first.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:33Speaker 4: So this was a conversation I was having with someone
- 0:35Speaker 4: the other day. I don't know what my problem is,
- 0:38Speaker 4: and I found out that it's more common than I thought.
- 0:40Speaker 4: But somebody can introduce themselves to me and within seconds,
- 0:45Speaker 4: I do not know what their name is, right anymore sure?
- 0:48Speaker 4: And so I went to go to the interwebs to
- 0:51Speaker 4: see what the science.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Is behind this.
- 0:54Speaker 4: And when I went to when I went to type,
- 0:56Speaker 4: why do I forget people's names? Quickly popped up as
- 1:00Speaker 4: like the first predictive text thing. And one of the
- 1:04Speaker 4: reasons was because our brain is scrambling to retrieve words
- 1:08Speaker 4: quickly enough to keep up pace with a conversation with
- 1:10Speaker 4: someone new.
- 1:11Speaker 1: But clearly only for some of us, because we all
- 1:14Speaker 1: know people who pick up names immediately and hang on
- 1:17Speaker 1: to them, right, which is which I'm always kind of
- 1:20Speaker 1: shocked by. Like if I meet somebody and then pretty
- 1:22Speaker 1: soon they hit me with that. So I don't know, Jack,
- 1:24Speaker 1: what are you thinking? I think, Wow, how do you
- 1:25Speaker 1: remember my name?
- 1:27Speaker 2: You know, we've all heard the tricks. Repeat it three
- 1:29Speaker 2: times to yourself, or come up with a rhyme. Wait,
- 1:33Speaker 2: there's Jack. He won't attack me remember his name. But
- 1:37Speaker 2: I know it's that I am reckoning with a brand
- 1:40Speaker 2: new person, trying to figure out what sort of person
- 1:43Speaker 2: they are. You know, how's this going to go?
- 1:45Speaker 1: The rest of it? It's just for me. It's just selfishness.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And I decided years ago it's because I'm getting older.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I just go with a I don't remember your name
- 1:52Speaker 1: because I don't care. Oh see, I used Drew as
- 1:56Speaker 1: such a pawn. My husband is such a pawn.
- 1:59Speaker 4: I'll go up to somebody who I know they just
- 2:00Speaker 4: told me their name, and I'll be like, oh, this
- 2:02Speaker 4: is my husband, Drew, So I'll go hi, I'm.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And I'm like, it's a good one. Yeah, I just
- 2:07Speaker 1: go with that. Until you can convince me you're important
- 2:09Speaker 1: enough for me to remember. I'm just not going to
- 2:11Speaker 1: commit this to the limited space I have.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Again, I like your style, you have not earned your
- 2:16Speaker 2: way into my consciousness yet, given I.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Know, it's such a bad feeling, especially in certain circumstances,
- 2:22Speaker 1: it's extra awful. You know when when you like have
- 2:25Speaker 1: a lead in that you know it's going to be
- 2:28Speaker 1: somebody you want to remember their name for a long time. Yeah,
- 2:32Speaker 1: like this is the new sales manager or something like that. Okay,
- 2:35Speaker 1: we're going to be working together for a long time.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Obviously you have a big, good idea for me to
- 2:38Speaker 1: remember your name, but it's gone in a second.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Yes, just one.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I've used that strategy many times with my wife, who's
- 2:46Speaker 2: much better remembering names than I am. But you always
- 2:49Speaker 2: run into that person you say, oh, yeah, this is
- 2:52Speaker 2: my wife, Judy, and they say hi Judy, right, and
- 2:56Speaker 2: either they just don't think to introduce themselves, or they
- 3:00Speaker 2: think you're going to ladies and gentlemen. We're not beasts,
- 3:04Speaker 2: all right, We're human beings. If somebody introduces themselves to you,
- 3:09Speaker 2: or introduces someone else to you, you state your damn name.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Okay, I walk up that hard walk. Hey, Yes, I
- 3:18Speaker 1: walk home to the guy's wife and I say, if
- 3:20Speaker 1: you were to scream out your husband's name during sex,
- 3:22Speaker 1: what would you say?
- 3:23Speaker 3: Oh, well, I'm sure that goes well.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Jim, Jim, it's Jim, because while I've decided he does
- 3:32Speaker 2: not rate Jack remembering you do, baby, so talk to me. Yeah,
- 3:37Speaker 2: you just I'm trying to learn at the feet of
- 3:39Speaker 2: the great one.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I remember a couple of times in
- 3:43Speaker 1: my life where I've done this with attractive single women,
- 3:46Speaker 1: and I've thought, you're not even gonna try to remember
- 3:50Speaker 1: the name of somebody like this for a few minutes,
- 3:55Speaker 1: you idiots a molva. Yeah, I had ended up being
- 4:01Speaker 1: my wife for quite a few years. I remember thinking
- 4:06Speaker 1: I had been quite interested in her for quite some time,
- 4:08Speaker 1: and I had to wait until somebody said her name
- 4:10Speaker 1: out loud in a different circumstance before I can.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Remember what You just keep going up here and going hey,
- 4:16Speaker 3: you exactly.
- 4:18Speaker 1: You With dudes, you can say, what do you think
- 4:21Speaker 1: of that? Bro? Man?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Dude? Yeah, but all it's women, it's it's harder.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Yeah, because you start calling us like sweetheart and stuff.
- 4:28Speaker 3: That's creepy.
- 4:29Speaker 2: You can't eat that, or even like, girl, what do
- 4:32Speaker 2: you think girl, that'd just be weird.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Lady, lady, lady. Human. So you probably know the story
- 4:40Speaker 1: by now. Even if you've heard it, I think you'll
- 4:42Speaker 1: find it entertaining again. The other night in the debate,
- 4:44Speaker 1: Tim Walls got to asked about a problem that's been
- 4:47Speaker 1: dogging him for a while. So he ran around for
- 4:51Speaker 1: big chunk of his adult life, claiming he was there
- 4:56Speaker 1: during the Cientman Square massacre in China in nineteen eighty nine,
- 5:00Speaker 1: which is one of the biggest events in world history,
- 5:02Speaker 1: certainly modern world history, and claiming you were there, and
- 5:05Speaker 1: you there have therefore, I guess have some sort of
- 5:08Speaker 1: wisdom insight because of having been there. Is that what
- 5:11Speaker 1: he was trying to do?
- 5:12Speaker 2: No, he's just a fabuloust. He has to enhance every
- 5:15Speaker 2: story he tells.
- 5:17Speaker 3: It's a great meme of the other tens.
- 5:19Speaker 4: It it's a picture of Tim Walls and it said,
- 5:21Speaker 4: so there I was on the bow of the Titanic.
- 5:26Speaker 1: But he's been caught since then with a in a
- 5:31Speaker 1: number of ways showing that he wasn't there at the time.
- 5:33Speaker 1: He couldn't have been there at the time, And Margaret Brennan,
- 5:36Speaker 1: to her credit in the debate the other night, brought
- 5:38Speaker 1: it up, and his explanation is the worst trying to
- 5:42Speaker 1: explain a lie ever in the history of trying to
- 5:45Speaker 1: explain a lie. I think surely you've heard.
- 5:48Speaker 2: It by now, but whether you have or have not,
- 5:50Speaker 2: it includes a number of bizarre and misplaced sentence fragments
- 5:56Speaker 2: that don't flow from what he's just said, including are
- 6:00Speaker 2: all time favorite about I'm proud of that service, which
- 6:04Speaker 2: you'll hear. But there are a number of just weird
- 6:06Speaker 2: odds and ends, as if he'd been programmed to spout
- 6:11Speaker 2: certain censuses as sentences but it just didn't come out right.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Is programming failed or the hardware glitched or something?
- 6:19Speaker 4: Stop.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I have more of that, but let's hear it. First.
- 6:21Speaker 5: We want to ask you about your leadership qualities. Governor Walls.
- 6:26Speaker 5: You said you were in Hong Kong during the deadly
- 6:28Speaker 5: Tianamen Square protests in the spring of nineteen eighty nine,
- 6:32Speaker 5: but Minnesota Public Radio and other media outlets are reporting
- 6:35Speaker 5: that you actually didn't travel to Asia until August of
- 6:39Speaker 5: that year. Can you explain that discrepancy your.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Yeah, well, and to the folks out there, it didn't
- 6:44Speaker 6: get at the top of this look. I grew up
- 6:47Speaker 6: in small rural Nebraska town of four hundred town that
- 6:51Speaker 6: you rode your bike with your buddies. Still the street
- 6:53Speaker 6: lights come on, and I'm proud of that service. I
- 6:55Speaker 6: joined the National Guard at seventeen, worked on family farms,
- 6:58Speaker 6: and then I use the gibill to become a teacher,
- 7:02Speaker 6: passionate about it, a young teacher. My first year out,
- 7:05Speaker 6: I got the opportunity in the summer of eighty nine
- 7:07Speaker 6: to travel to China thirty five years ago.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Be able to do.
- 7:10Speaker 6: That, I came back home and then started a program
- 7:14Speaker 6: to take young people there. We would take basketball teams,
- 7:17Speaker 6: we would take baseball teams, we would take dancers, and
- 7:20Speaker 6: we would go back and forth to China. The issue
- 7:22Speaker 6: for that was was to try and learn. Now, look,
- 7:24Speaker 6: my community knows who I am. They saw where I
- 7:27Speaker 6: was at. They look. I will be the first to
- 7:30Speaker 6: tell you I have poured my heart into my community.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I've tried to do the.
- 7:33Speaker 6: Best I can, but I've not been perfect, and I'm
- 7:36Speaker 6: a knucklehead at times. But it's always been about that.
- 7:38Speaker 6: Those same people elected me to Congress.
- 7:42Speaker 2: You almost have to divide that up into twelve to
- 7:46Speaker 2: fifteen different snippets and analyze them separately. I mean, for instance,
- 7:51Speaker 2: Michael play just the beginning again, what is the first
- 7:55Speaker 2: sentence out of his mouth?
- 7:57Speaker 1: Somebody tell me we.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Want to ask you about your leader ship qualities. Governor Walls,
- 8:02Speaker 5: you said you were in Hong Kong during the deadly
- 8:05Speaker 5: Tieneman Square protests in the spring of nineteen eighty nine,
- 8:09Speaker 5: but Minnesota Public Radio and other media outlets are reporting
- 8:12Speaker 5: that you actually didn't travel to Asia until August of that.
- 8:16Speaker 5: Here we go, can you explain that discrepancy.
- 8:19Speaker 6: Your Yeah, well, and to the folks out there didn't
- 8:21Speaker 6: get at the top of this.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Look, I grew up in small Okay.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Right there, So the folks out there that didn't get
- 8:27Speaker 2: to the top of this, I mean, it begins with gibberish,
- 8:32Speaker 2: right descends into flapdoodle, then fears into nonsense.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Right after he gets through that whatever that first sentence was,
- 8:40Speaker 1: he goes to, I grew up in a small Nebraska town.
- 8:43Speaker 4: What he like adopted both a camel A tactic and
- 8:47Speaker 4: a Biden tactic because he does that, oh that town
- 8:50Speaker 4: and rode the bikes with the sun. And then he
- 8:51Speaker 4: kept saying, look, look, because biden Ois does that.
- 8:55Speaker 1: In that sentence, In case you didn't catch it, I look,
- 8:57Speaker 1: I grew up in a small rural Nebraska town of
- 8:59Speaker 1: town that you wrote your bike with your buddies till
- 9:01Speaker 1: the street likes came on, and I'm proud of that.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Thank you for your service, Tim.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Right, and later, I mean again, there are at least
- 9:10Speaker 2: a dozen things in there. But then at one point
- 9:12Speaker 2: he says, I'll be the first to tell you I've
- 9:15Speaker 2: poured my heart into my community. No, no, no, that's
- 9:18Speaker 2: a brag.
- 9:19Speaker 1: You shouldn't be the first to tell me. That's other
- 9:21Speaker 1: people should tell me that.
- 9:22Speaker 2: It just there were so many. It was like he'd
- 9:25Speaker 2: memorized a bunch of phrases and just put them together.
- 9:30Speaker 1: You're right, I will be the first to tell you
- 9:32Speaker 1: I have poured my heart into my community. I have
- 9:35Speaker 1: this written out. I'm just going to keep it the
- 9:38Speaker 1: rest of my life. Carry it my wallet like the
- 9:40Speaker 1: pictures of my kids when you need to pick me up.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Oh my god. Oh. And then she asked a follow
- 9:46Speaker 1: up too, and then I've got a comment on that. Here.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Here's how the follow up went to and get to
- 9:50Speaker 1: her credit for following.
- 9:51Speaker 5: Up, Governor, just to follow up on that, the question
- 9:55Speaker 5: was can you explain Thereancy.
- 9:58Speaker 6: All I said on this was is I got there
- 9:59Speaker 6: that and misspoke on this, So I will just that's
- 10:03Speaker 6: what I've said. So I was in Hong Kong and
- 10:08Speaker 6: China during the democracy protest went in and from that
- 10:12Speaker 6: I learned a lot of what needed to be in governance.
- 10:17Speaker 5: Oh thank you, Governor.
- 10:20Speaker 1: That I always feel bad for him.
- 10:23Speaker 2: If there's been a worse answer to a question in
- 10:27Speaker 2: the history of presidential vice presidential debates, I would like
- 10:30Speaker 2: to hear it.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Yeah, Mark Alpern on his podcast afterwards, him and his
- 10:35Speaker 1: former Republican and Democratic strategist all agreed it was the
- 10:37Speaker 1: worst answer in the history of the presidential debates.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I worked at a bar.
- 10:42Speaker 4: I feel like that's something I would have heard in
- 10:43Speaker 4: there from somebody that was just overserved served.
- 10:46Speaker 1: The follow up one there where he stops at one
- 10:49Speaker 1: point and kind of hopes something will bail him out,
- 10:51Speaker 1: like a band will start playing, or they'll move on
- 10:53Speaker 1: to another question or something, and Marcus Press is what I've.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Said, Are you saying it now though you're that's what
- 11:00Speaker 2: we're doing here.
- 11:01Speaker 1: We're saying things.
- 11:03Speaker 2: That's what the debate is, say something, and that is
- 11:08Speaker 2: what I've said.
- 11:09Speaker 1: And then and then Margaret Brennon just looks at him like,
- 11:11Speaker 1: you still have more time. And that didn't sound like
- 11:14Speaker 1: the end or all right?
- 11:16Speaker 2: In no way was that. No English speaker would think
- 11:21Speaker 2: that was the end of his statement because it wasn't
- 11:24Speaker 2: a statement at all that possible. Yeh, She's like, there's
- 11:27Speaker 2: more right or something.
- 11:30Speaker 1: So these strategists who've been involved in presidential debate prep
- 11:34Speaker 1: before all were amazed that he didn't have a solid,
- 11:40Speaker 1: like two lines ready to go on that topic since
- 11:42Speaker 1: they knew it was coming, and he's been asked about
- 11:44Speaker 1: it almost every time he sits down for an interview,
- 11:47Speaker 1: he's asked about it. I wonder if CBS will follow
- 11:49Speaker 1: up on it on sixty Minutes this Sunday night, But
- 11:52Speaker 1: he's asked about over and over. So how have you
- 11:54Speaker 1: not nailed down a couple of lines to get you
- 11:55Speaker 1: out of that trap? Look, I got the got it
- 11:57Speaker 1: wrong is a long time ago, and I just I
- 12:01Speaker 1: got it wrong the end. You don't even really.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Under saying I misremembered. Yeah, yeah, Well, hope you enjoyed
- 12:08Speaker 2: the podcast. But for any of you folks who didn't
- 12:10Speaker 2: get at the top of that. We'll try to do
- 12:14Speaker 2: better tomorrow.
- 12:15Speaker 1: And I rode my bike with my friends as a kid,
- 12:17Speaker 1: and I'm proud of that service.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Absolutely. I went to the public foold swam and rode home.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I'm proud of that service.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And I'll be the first to tell you I've done
- 12:26Speaker 1: a lot for these people. And the street lights were
- 12:29Speaker 1: on too. Yes, important important point. Well, Joe Jack Casey,
- 12:35Speaker 1: have a good day.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Well, I guess that's it.
