- 1:25[SPEAKER_02]: This story is one of service, purpose, and responsible, and I'm excited to dive in.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_02]: Jason, welcome to Daily Influence.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so so much for having I really appreciate it.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_02]: Jason, can you share a bit about your background and what led you to who you are today with your list with our listeners, both personally and professionally?
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oh gosh, happy to.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a firm believer in.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: everything that you went through leads you up to the very moment that you are today.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: So let's go on a little bit of a journey.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: I was born and raised in the East Coast in New Jersey, went to NYU Business School and began my career as a CPA with Pricewater House Cooperers, being part of large audit teams,
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: that helped make sure that large, financially traded companies were representing their books correctly.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_01]: I then pivoted into an internal role centered around organizational design, change management, and diversity inclusion efforts with a specific highlight around people who are returning from military service and individuals who are disabled, whether it be from service or otherwise.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: And the importance of having that kind of diversity recognized within the workplace.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_01]: While I was in that role, I moved out to the Chicago land area where some of my best friends from college had grown up and began to take root in the Midwest while I was a consultant with PWC.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: It was during that time while I was working in consulting that I got bit by a little bit of the gaming bug.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: I enjoy board games, card games, video games, you name it, and escape rooms were a component of that, and I decided to end up becoming an escape room owner myself, making my own games with a team of individuals who are similarly passionate about this.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_01]: We've been entered into entrepreneurship, and I need to apply everything that I had learned for big business and figure out
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: how the heck does this work for a small business?
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: That was back in 2017, and unfortunately, fast forward a few years, we hit the COVID-19 pandemic, which certainly ravaged the industry.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: But it was during that time, while figuring out how to pivot, I attended the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program, where I met the founder of Norman Professional Services, where I work today, where I combine both my experiences
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: and the legacy of Norman Professional Services and it's 20 plus years of doing work for small businesses to help bring accounting knowledge to entrepreneurs that are looking to grow their own businesses today.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for sharing your background.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_02]: It Norman Professional Services, you help entrepreneurs take off the armor and get real about their business finances.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_02]: How do you guide clients and shifting their money mindset to build just not just profit, but a sustainable and meaningful legacy?
- 4:17[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's really important to remember that a business at its fundamental level should be an asset to the business owner and assets are supposed to provide value, provide benefit, provide joy.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a chance that when you are working in the business, you've got a dream of what it can be.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of like asking a kid, what do you wish it could be when you grow up?
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: We love to ask business owners in the perfect version of your business.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_01]: What do you wish that it can do?
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: Not just in terms of top-line revenue, but the impact that it has on the community, the impact that it has on yourself as a business owner, and what that's supposed to look like and mean.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: And we actually help craft what does that business look like?
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, from a numbers perspective and building what is formally called a
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: But on an emotional level, we help architect the business of people's dreams.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: Because when you have that North Star, you can then decide, you can have some clarity around what are decisions that I'm making today that are moving me towards that North Star, rather than feeling mired in small shifts in the presence that might not end up getting you directed in a specific way.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: by forming a grounding and rooting in, what do you wish the business to be, what's the business of your dreams?
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: It then becomes a clearer conversation about, well, what do we need to do to become that?
- 5:47[SPEAKER_02]: That makes sense.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_02]: Can you tell us about a moment or experience where you thought you made a positive lasting impact on someone's life, whether in your business or your volunteer work?
- 5:56[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for asking.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, continuing on with that specific kind of conversation, there was a former client of ours that we worked with that's we went through this exercise and they had grandiose plans about growing a business to exponentially in dollars and
- 6:14[SPEAKER_01]: trying to expand to this market and that market, because that was kind of the story that was pre-programmed inside of them of what business is supposed to do.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: But at one point we came to a point in the discussion where we said, all right, in order to support a structure like this, there's going to be a management structure, probably a locations, departments, and other things like that.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: And you'd probably
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: at least this size, right?
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: A few dozen people to potentially 100 people at this particular inflection phase.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_01]: And they pause and set, wait.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: I had always thought about it being a very small, tight-knit group and not really having a lot of hands in the pond.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: We go, well, that's actually a really important matching of expectations.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_01]: Do you want to lead a business of XYZ size and XYZ locations?
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: Are you excited about leading an enterprise that has that kind of spread, but also be aware of the work and infrastructure that is associated with it?
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: And it was in that moment where we actually took an opportunity to deconstruct some of the internal myths or stories about what business success looked like, and probably dramatically changed the trajectory of that person's desires for business expansion and growth.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_01]: and re-aligned it in ways that were frankly really important to them and their family centered values and had we not had that opportunity to recalibrate there.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_01]: I think there could have been potentially really tremendous friction between this owner and their business and their family in ways that were chasing a dream that felt textbook or pre-programmed.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_01]: but not necessarily an alignment with that person's own vision.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: You don't need to become the next Microsoft, the next Google, the next whatever.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: You need to become the business owner for the best business that supports you.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: Once again, the business is your asset.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_02]: That makes sense.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the IN team series we talk about responsible importance is using your skills and position to create value for yourself, your team and your community.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_02]: How do you help business owners ensure their work serve bigger why?
- 8:42[SPEAKER_01]: That's something that I really love about the Iron Team series that you and everybody that's been on this really focuses on is really centering in on that why the story I shared is a great reflection of let's test and challenge why are you saying that you're looking for this or desiring this and really focusing in on
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: how is this in service of your values and your goals as a personal individual?
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: What is this business as a representation of your legacy?
- 9:19[SPEAKER_01]: And what do you want your customer community to remember about you?
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: Because this business, if designed in a certain way, will outlast you, will outlive you?
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: And should outlast and outlive you?
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think a lot of folks say,
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's very important for a business owner to be thinking about exit planning, its accession planning, as early as possible, while still having joy within the business and the actual execution, but knowing and working towards reality, where, well, one day, you're going to retire and the business is going to need to be able to exist and move on
- 10:01[SPEAKER_01]: and values that really truly represent your legacy.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: And the early you gain clarity around that and what the business is supposed to be for you and for those around you and for the community, the more prepared it can be to move towards that transition whenever that transition may be.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: When we talk about exit planning and succession strategy, it's not a tomorrow thing.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: We're not saying you need to give everything up right away.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: but not thinking about it could lead to a future where the business wouldn't be able to survive without you.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: Wouldn't be able to withstand and be flexible enough to anticipate your meaningful departure.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: And that would be unfortunate.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: we want our business owners that we work with to be able to set themselves and their businesses up for success.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: And we engage in these why questions and these future vision questions to do so.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_02]: True.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_02]: Your work with games done quick, raise over 2.4 million with doctors, for doctors without borders.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_02]: What do that experience teach you about teamwork, leadership, and using your eight passion for a greater good?
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's such an incredible organization to have the privilege to apply for and get selected for something that's really special about them is it brings in talent of all different kinds.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: put on an amazing, honestly, TV show quality production that lasts for an entire week to be able to raise funds for this amazing charity.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_01]: We've got people who are camera operators, you've got people who are social media specialists, you've got people who are graphic artists,
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: and illustrators in and of their own rights.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: You've got people who are tech people making sure that, you know, everything's looking good on the screen and while it's being streamed online, you've got production crew, literally calling the shots and moving the pieces, you've got the onsite talent, but on camera and behind the microphone in order to be able to make this happen.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: And so when I think about,
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: What does that experience teach us is that it takes a village of people to make great tremendous impact.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: And it takes a village of passionate individuals who are good at what they do and are supportive of those that are around them.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: Whether they're in your immediate sphere or not.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: So whether it is the on camera talent interacting well with the still and video photographer folks interacting well with the artists that are on site interacting well with well I skipped over a very important population.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_01]: The video gamers themselves playing games to be able to help promote awareness and raise money for this amazing cause by
- 12:59[SPEAKER_01]: having a community of individuals that comes together under a common mission, under a common vision and shared mutual support and celebration with and for each other in the efforts that are being done.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: whether it's for a charity fundraising effort, a non-profit community mission, or a for-profit business that alignments and collaboration and celebration and shared among all of its people will help yield amazing results.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_02]: And is so true.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_02]: Look, message towards the big encouragement.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_02]: Would you like to share with our listeners who aspire to make a positive difference?
- 13:38[SPEAKER_01]: When I think about people's presence in the world,
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: You will always have influence on those that are around you, whether you know it or not.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: A trusted colleague and advisor had shared with me.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of like leaving a fingerprint on a pole or a water bottle, it's there.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: And you've left your imprint on there.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_01]: And you want to conduct your life, your business, your relationships, your interaction in a way where that fingerprint that's left behind is indeed a positive one.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_01]: And that, yes, there are people who are making gigantic waves around the world today, doing amazing, incredible stuff and having tremendous influence.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: But if you even have just a little bit of influence within your own circle, know that you matter, know that your presence is valued, know that your soul and your spirit is loved.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: And that is great motivation enough to be able to step into the world, to breathe and smile, to express gratitude and to encourage others to do the same.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_02]: I love that Jason, thank you for sharing that in your journey, your insights and incredible ways are using your expertise and passions to make a friends.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_02]: From empowering entrepreneurs to creating life, changing impact through service, you really shown us that responsible influence isn't just about what we achieve.
