- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: During this first week of the year, you'll hear a lot of people talk about their goals.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: You'll see social media posts, articles, emails, and news stories about all the big plans people are making for 2021.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Perhaps you've set some goals for yourself.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: If so, congrats.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: That's an important step toward being successful as a writer.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Maybe you even shared some of these goals with a few friends or perhaps posted them online.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Goals are important, but there's also a danger in talking about them too much.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: The more we talk about our goals, especially on social media, it can easily feel like we're making progress without actually having done the work.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: If you're a detailed person, you probably have an elaborate vision of what your completed goal looks like.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a finished book, a podcast that's launched, or client work that's completed.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: But this perfect vision in our heads is usually nothing like the day-to-day messiness of actually achieving those goals.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: We stop and start, we get sidetracked, we get interrupted, we get tired, and before long, the pristine vision of a perfectly achieved goal comes crumbling down, and we just want to quit.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: The solution is deceptively simple, and it comes from a man who had more than his fair share of complicated creative projects.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Walt Disney was the master of bringing creative dreams to life.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: As the creator and visionary of the first full-length animated movie, the modern theme park, and so much other amazing work, he knew a thing or two about what it takes to get through messy creative projects and to produce tangible results.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Walt Disney once said, The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: This is great advice for every single writer.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Goals are important to success, but the key to success is to take daily action toward those goals, even when it feels messy and frustrating.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Or perhaps especially when it feels messy and frustrating.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Hey, thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
