- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon Men's Basketball
- 0:02Speaker 1: Coaches Show Sunday afternoon. Husky's returning to Gamble to tangle
- 0:06Speaker 1: with their Root forty four rivals from Providence College. Radio
- 0:09Speaker 1: coverage begins with a hard auto group count down a
- 0:12Speaker 1: tip at one thirty here along the Yukon Sports Network,
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Varsity Network Gap and the Varsity Network dot Com.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Just to wrap up what we're talking about, Coach in
- 0:19Speaker 1: the first segment, I've heard coaches say this in basketball
- 0:22Speaker 1: and football too. You almost have to spend time as
- 0:26Speaker 1: you coach your team recruiting your own team. That I
- 0:30Speaker 1: think would be a really difficult thing for any coach
- 0:33Speaker 1: who is completely immersed in trying to make his team
- 0:36Speaker 1: better day to day and trying to win games.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I just think you want to have
- 0:42Speaker 2: a I think a high enough quality of program in
- 0:45Speaker 2: terms of the resources all around that the players feel
- 0:49Speaker 2: like they're not being cheated in terms of having everything
- 0:53Speaker 2: at their disposal to achieve great success, to become the
- 0:57Speaker 2: best version of themselves, to improve and become the most productive,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and to reach their potential.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Whether that's the way you travel to the nil.
- 1:06Speaker 2: To the facilities, the practice facilities, the whole arena, you know,
- 1:11Speaker 2: the things that will help them, you know, be successful,
- 1:14Speaker 2: win championships and hopefully for them get to the NBA
- 1:18Speaker 2: or the highest level of play for them. So, you know,
- 1:22Speaker 2: number one, you got to have that in place. And
- 1:24Speaker 2: then you know, the second thing is they've got to
- 1:27Speaker 2: believe that you've got expertise and that you've got the
- 1:30Speaker 2: ability to an evidence of developing players that have not
- 1:35Speaker 2: only won at Yukon, but then have you know, been
- 1:38Speaker 2: draft picks or high draft picks, or or playing around
- 1:42Speaker 2: the globe the way we you've got guys like r. J.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Cole or Isaiah Walley or some of the guys that
- 1:48Speaker 2: didn't quite you know, you know, make the NBA, but
- 1:51Speaker 2: they're having you know, Jalen Adams, Christian Vital, guys are
- 1:55Speaker 2: having just great careers professionally in basketball, not just in
- 2:00Speaker 2: the NBA. So you don't want to have to beg
- 2:03Speaker 2: your players to stay, induce your players to stay with
- 2:07Speaker 2: empty promises. You know, you just you got to have
- 2:10Speaker 2: the resources to support the player, and then you have
- 2:14Speaker 2: to have the relationships with the players, and then you
- 2:17Speaker 2: have to have the evidence and the credibility with the
- 2:20Speaker 2: players where they want you to be their coach. They
- 2:23Speaker 2: think that you're the absolute best coach for them.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:26Speaker 1: One thing I just saw dan in the news, I
- 2:28Speaker 1: think it was yesterday. Six players from one of the
- 2:31Speaker 1: programs around the country were up in arms saying that
- 2:34Speaker 1: they were promised certain you know, monetary returns on their
- 2:40Speaker 1: coming to a certain school and didn't get that and
- 2:43Speaker 1: now they're seeking legal action. That really worries me because
- 2:48Speaker 1: now we're going to have to go to contracts with people.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Because if players can go to lawyers and say, well,
- 2:54Speaker 1: we didn't get what they said we were supposed to get,
- 2:56Speaker 1: now we're going to go after whatever, you know, universe,
- 3:00Speaker 1: the program, whatever it may be. That is kind of scary.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Yeah, that's scary.
- 3:04Speaker 2: There's so much you know, chaos right now and lack
- 3:08Speaker 2: of leadership. And I was read a tweet by one
- 3:12Speaker 2: of the staff members that had mentioned today that you know,
- 3:15Speaker 2: potentially everyone's just going to get five years of eligibility
- 3:18Speaker 2: and you're just kind of just seeing things on Twitter
- 3:22Speaker 2: or social media and just have no idea what's going
- 3:25Speaker 2: on with your sport and who's in charge. And you know,
- 3:29Speaker 2: I hear the narrative, Well, coaches can just leave and
- 3:33Speaker 2: go wherever they want, which is not you know, it's
- 3:36Speaker 2: not true. We have buyouts. You know, there are penalties
- 3:39Speaker 2: if we do leave, you know, and a lot of
- 3:41Speaker 2: times they're very hefty financial penalties.
- 3:44Speaker 3: And then you.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Know, we also we could also have you know, the
- 3:49Speaker 2: job taken from us. We could be fired at any moment,
- 3:51Speaker 2: you know, whereas I don't have the ability to cut
- 3:53Speaker 2: a player because he's not playing well. So you know,
- 3:56Speaker 2: right now, there's just not there's no structure to the sport.
- 4:01Speaker 2: There's guidelines that need to be put in place or else.
- 4:05Speaker 3: You know.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Listen, coaches got to be big boys, and you've got
- 4:09Speaker 2: to stop complaining. It's not a complaint, it's a cry
- 4:12Speaker 2: for help. I love college basketball. It's an incredible sport.
- 4:17Speaker 2: It's the best thing you could watch basketball wise, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 2: this time of year through April, because everyone's going life
- 4:24Speaker 2: for death to.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Win these games. I mean, these games.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Are just like life or death battles, you know, which
- 4:29Speaker 2: you're probably not seeing a lot in the NBA until
- 4:32Speaker 2: playoff time. So you know, I'm not complaining, but you
- 4:36Speaker 2: just don't want the fans to become disenchanted by the
- 4:39Speaker 2: product because it's becoming too transactional. They can't keep track
- 4:44Speaker 2: of who's on their team, and then it just becomes
- 4:47Speaker 2: maybe too chaotic. And then you know, if our fans
- 4:51Speaker 2: lose interest in it, we're out of business with toast.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it. And then when you don't
- 4:57Speaker 1: want your fans talking about what goes on outside the
- 5:00Speaker 1: sidelines when they're going to the game, that's not good
- 5:03Speaker 1: on the road these wins, you've had Texas great start
- 5:07Speaker 1: to the game. Butler, same thing to Paul. I think
- 5:11Speaker 1: I asked you in the pregame for de Paul, what
- 5:13Speaker 1: is it about getting off to a good start, and
- 5:15Speaker 1: you said something, I just tell them to get off
- 5:17Speaker 1: to a good start. There's more than that, though. Right
- 5:20Speaker 1: you come out of the locker room, you're in another arena.
- 5:23Speaker 1: You don't see it once a year. Maybe maybe you've
- 5:25Speaker 1: never been in there. It's a difficult transition, isn't it
- 5:29Speaker 1: for players to go to a place they've never seen,
- 5:31Speaker 1: never played in, and have to bring their best Yeah.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I mean, you can't control whether you whether you get
- 5:37Speaker 2: off to a great start or not. It helps if
- 5:39Speaker 2: you're an excellent defensive team an excellent rebounding team and
- 5:42Speaker 2: excellent offensive. If you're an excellent all around team and
- 5:48Speaker 2: it's hard to score on you, it's hard to get
- 5:50Speaker 2: a rebound versue, and you're hard to stop on offense, obviously,
- 5:53Speaker 2: those things increase your chances of starting fast. You know,
- 5:56Speaker 2: it's like people that complain about coaches whose teams miss
- 6:00Speaker 2: free throws. You know, like that has nothing to do
- 6:02Speaker 2: with coaching. It has more to do with recruiting. Maybe
- 6:06Speaker 2: you just recruited bad shooters or players that can't handle pressure.
- 6:10Speaker 2: But you know, I don't want to get off on
- 6:12Speaker 2: a tangent about free throw shooting and how that is
- 6:15Speaker 2: not related to coaching expertise in any in any manner,
- 6:20Speaker 2: every coach practices free throws shooting. Every coach practices shooting
- 6:25Speaker 2: pressure free throws in practice.
- 6:26Speaker 3: And that's the tangent I don't want to be on
- 6:28Speaker 3: right now.
- 6:29Speaker 2: But you know you could script up I think really
- 6:32Speaker 2: good offensive things to run early in a game to
- 6:35Speaker 2: attack another team's you know, defensive tendencies, and you can
- 6:39Speaker 2: have a really good scouting report to try to have
- 6:42Speaker 2: good defensive wrinkles, which I think puts you in position
- 6:45Speaker 2: to get off to a faster start, but in the end,
- 6:48Speaker 2: it's you know, a lot of it just comes down to,
- 6:50Speaker 2: you know, whether your guys make shots to start a game,
- 6:53Speaker 2: and whether your guys step up on defense to start
- 6:56Speaker 2: a game. And you know, what is the atmosphere like
- 6:59Speaker 2: for your home game? You know, do you have a
- 7:00Speaker 2: great home crowd? Was it a great anthem or did
- 7:03Speaker 2: we bring in someone that's sang a bad anthem? And
- 7:07Speaker 2: now the crowd isn't into it and and it's kind
- 7:10Speaker 2: of a you know, it's a dead atmosphere, and now
- 7:13Speaker 2: you're kind of your your your zombie like, you know,
- 7:17Speaker 2: there's a lot of factors. You play on the road
- 7:19Speaker 2: in front of a you know, a half ass crowd.
- 7:23Speaker 1: There was actually a very good crowd for the DePaul game,
- 7:26Speaker 1: sixty five hundred people. They're only drawn thirty three, so
- 7:28Speaker 1: they came out to watch the back to back national champs.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And you kind of took care of business early, going
- 7:33Speaker 1: eight for fifteen from three in the first.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I like that, Mike, you know what I was you
- 7:38Speaker 2: we were watching a film of their games, and I'm saying, like,
- 7:41Speaker 2: I think it's maybe a little bit better in there,
- 7:43Speaker 2: and you know, I like the fact that that we
- 7:46Speaker 2: drew twice as much as they drew for another big
- 7:50Speaker 2: East game, and it was some atmosphere in there that
- 7:52Speaker 2: that I like, that that felt good.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I think the players do too. They get some get
- 7:57Speaker 1: some undertoes and ready to rip all right with Dan
- 7:59Speaker 1: her Like, we're back in just a moment. This is
- 8:01Speaker 1: the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show from Learfield
