- 0:36this. I hope you continue to share
- 0:38this like comment subscribe below.
- 0:41I'm so thankful for you guys. Let's continue to get after it.
- 0:44We're going to be in John chapter 1, but we're going to be
- 0:46in verses 43 and finished through verse 51.
- 0:51And remember, I'm reading through the NLT version.
- 0:54Let's get straight to it. Verse 43.
- 0:57The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee.
- 0:59He found Philip and said to him, come follow me.
- 1:03Verse 44, Philip was from Beseda, Andrew and Peter's
- 1:07hometown. Verse 45, Philip went to look
- 1:10for Nathaniel, told him we have found the very person Moses and
- 1:14the prophets wrote about. His name is Jesus, the son of
- 1:17Joseph from Nazareth. Verse 46, Nazareth exclaimed
- 1:22Nathaniel, can anything good come from Nazareth?
- 1:25Come and see for yourself. Philip replied.
- 1:28Verse 47. As they approached, Jesus said,
- 1:31now here is a genuine son of Israel, a man of complete
- 1:35integrity. Verse 48.
- 1:37How do you know about me? Nathaniel asked.
- 1:40Jesus replied, I could see you under the fig tree before Philip
- 1:44found you. Verse 49 Then Nathaniel
- 1:46exclaimed, Rabbi, you are the Son of God, the King of Israel.
- 1:52Verse 50 Jesus asked him, do you believe this just because I told
- 1:56you I had seen you under the fig tree?
- 1:58You will see greater things than this.
- 2:00Verse 51 Then he said, I tell you the truth, you will see all
- 2:05heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son
- 2:10of man, the man who is the stairway between heaven and
- 2:14earth. I love how this follows up what
- 2:16we read last week, what we dove into last week through the verse
- 2:19of Jesus asking Andrew to follow him and how Andrew responds with
- 2:25then running and telling his brother Peter.
- 2:27Now it says the next day, the next day Jesus goes to Galilee,
- 2:30he finds Phillip and he asks Phillip to come and follow me.
- 2:35I think this is incredible that these men are responding to
- 2:38Jesus, the Son of God and there's no questioning, no
- 2:43hesitation. It's following him after Jesus
- 2:46asks them to follow him. It is immediate response to yes
- 2:50and following after Christ. But I think when we read this,
- 2:54sometimes you might think, man, these men just met Jesus, Jesus
- 2:56asked and follow him and it happened just like that.
- 2:59Remember the other three gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke
- 3:01are the synoptic gospels that are the seed together gospels
- 3:04that those gospels show to them that Jesus had met these men
- 3:09prior to this moment when we read it in the Gospel of John.
- 3:12And so Jesus now goes to these men and now they respond quickly
- 3:15to him asking them to follow him with an immediate response of
- 3:19yes, that they follow after Jesus.
- 3:22But I love how you have this reflection of Andrew and Philip
- 3:25that when they get asked by Jesus to follow them, they run
- 3:28and tell someone else that they don't just keep it for
- 3:31themselves, that they don't hear of this amazing news, the
- 3:36greatest news ever told, that they don't meet their Messiah
- 3:40and keep it to themselves, but rather they go and tell someone
- 3:43else. And I think that's what's been
- 3:45convicted me as we continue to go through the Gospel of John,
- 3:48this question from the Holy Spirit asking me of what are you
- 3:51doing with your faith? What are you doing with this
- 3:54knowledge of God that you have? What are you doing with this
- 3:57transformation that the Holy Spirit has done within your
- 4:00heart and your soul that you now know the Messiah, you know the
- 4:04Son of God, that you know, the one who gives us eternal life.
- 4:08What are you doing with that? Are you running and telling
- 4:11someone else or you just keeping it to yourself?
- 4:15And I love how the immediate response from these men, Andrew
- 4:18and Phillip, is not to just say woo, I'm following Jesus, man.
- 4:22I got the the coolest rabbi man I'm following the one who is the
- 4:26Messiah, the one we've been learning about man.
- 4:28I'm going to make sure that I keep this to myself for that I'm
- 4:30the only one. Maybe I can become the greatest
- 4:33follower of his that they're just focused about their own
- 4:36needs and their own wants. Rather, they respond with let me
- 4:39go and tell someone else that I want everyone to come to know
- 4:44Jesus. And I hope that you are
- 4:46encouraged but challenged also through this time of us walking
- 4:50through the Gospel of John. That if you have faith in Jesus,
- 4:53that you run and tell someone else that you don't just sit on
- 4:57this truth of God that you have. That you don't sit on this word
- 5:01and this news that you've received that can change
- 5:04people's trajectory of their soul.
- 5:06That they can come to know the God who created them and loves
- 5:09them and has purpose for them. That you let this news, you let
- 5:13this truth transform you not just internally, but motivate
- 5:19you outwardly to now go and tell others about Jesus.
- 5:23And I love that it goes on. In verse 45, it says Philip then
- 5:26went to look for Nathaniel and told him we have found the very
- 5:30person Moses and the prophets wrote about.
- 5:33His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.
- 5:38Philip runs and tells Nathaniel. We have found the very person
- 5:41that Moses and the prophets wrote about, that the one who
- 5:45was promised long ago, that we've all studied and learned
- 5:48that there's a Messiah that will come.
- 5:50I have just met him and now I want you to come and meet him.
- 5:55And I love that Philip is just straight to the point when he
- 5:59sees Nathaniel that he doesn't try to beat around the Bush or
- 6:02he doesn't try to use a bait and switch tactic that I think
- 6:06sometimes sadly is used in the church at times where we're
- 6:10trying to get people drawn in by maybe a cool event or, or, you
- 6:14know, a way that might draw people who would never show up
- 6:18to a church or show up to church.
- 6:18Listen, I'm not knocking that. I'm not saying that's a bad
- 6:21thing. I'm not saying you shouldn't do
- 6:22special events or have a block party or some ways to draw
- 6:27people into the church. But one thing that's been
- 6:30challenging me within this is that they went to the people
- 6:35that what they went to the people who didn't know Jesus and
- 6:38that they just hit people with the straight truth that Andrew
- 6:41ran to Peter, that Philip ran to Nathaniel.
- 6:44And it wasn't, hey, maybe you should come see this person I
- 6:48just met. They're like, no, no, no, this
- 6:49is the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who changes everything,
- 6:54the one who I just encountered, the true living God.
- 6:58I want you to now come meet him. That they speak the truth of God
- 7:02that they don't try to withhold from who Jesus is or try to get
- 7:06them to show up without first letting them know that I just
- 7:08encountered the living God, That Jesus, the Son of God is the
- 7:12Messiah that was promised and his name is Jesus.
- 7:15But it's interesting Nathaniel responded responds with in verse
- 7:1946 Nazareth like what you mean Nazareth?
- 7:24Can anything good come from Nazareth if you do not know that
- 7:27context? Nazareth was not like this
- 7:30booming or popular well known town.
- 7:35It wasn't a place It'd be like in our in our day and age.
- 7:38It'd be like someone coming and being like, you know, hey, I
- 7:41just met the Messiah and he's from Lima.
- 7:45OH, Dang, if you're from Lima and you're listening, you can be
- 7:47like, whoa, the shots fired. Or we, we would, we'd be
- 7:50expecting someone of, you know, well stashed or someone who's
- 7:54well known or someone who's going to be the Messiah is going
- 7:57to come from like LA or New York City, right?
- 8:00Like a place that's known. But rather it's like, no, he's
- 8:05from Nazareth. And the response from Nathaniel
- 8:07in that day and age would have been like Nazareth, Like why
- 8:11would the Son of God, the Messiah that was promised has
- 8:14come from Nazareth out of all places, not from the well known
- 8:18towns we know where the popular places, the places for from
- 8:22where people who matter come from.
- 8:24That is Nathaniel's response. It's it's a prejudice to a place
- 8:27that the Jewish people would have looked down upon that
- 8:29Nazareth wasn't just this incredible place.
- 8:32It was a not known small country, you know, out in the
- 8:37boonies type place to the Jewish people that this wouldn't have
- 8:40been somewhere they would have thought the Son of God was
- 8:42coming from. But I love how Phillip doesn't
- 8:45get discouraged by that, that if we were coming to tell someone
- 8:48about something and someone maybe took some shots fired at
- 8:51what you're trying to tell them and they're like, bro, what
- 8:53you're coming from where like, bro, ain't no way that that's
- 8:56the Messiah that we may be discouraged by that.
- 8:59But rather, Phillip replies, come and see for yourself, you
- 9:04come and see for yourself, and I promise you, you would not be
- 9:07disappointed. Phillip knows that he just
- 9:10encountered the Messiah, and he wants that for Nathaniel.
- 9:13That he's not taking no for an answer, that he doesn't care of
- 9:15Nathaniel things. Nazareth is a place that nothing
- 9:18good can come from it. He knows who he just met and he
- 9:22wants to invite Nathaniel to come meet Jesus as well.
- 9:25And it says in verse 47, as they approached Jesus said, now here
- 9:30is a genuine son of Israel, a man of complete integrity, which
- 9:35is pretty incredible. Jesus calls out in Nathaniel who
- 9:39he is. He, he looks to his heart that
- 9:42he knows that Nathaniel is a man of complete integrity, that even
- 9:46though Nathaniel is probably hesitant when he gets told that
- 9:50the Messiah is from Nazareth, but he hears that testimony, he
- 9:54hears Philip tell him that he just encountered the Messiah.
- 9:58Nathaniel goes, but now when he's going, he hears Jesus say
- 10:03something to him about him, his inner being that only someone
- 10:08who really knew him would know. And I love that, that Jesus
- 10:12knows us. Jesus created us.
- 10:14Jesus knows the inner parts of your being that he wove you
- 10:18together in your mother's womb that Jesus knows everything
- 10:21about he he knows the number of hairs on your head as I don't
- 10:24have much lasting or you know, hanging on to that he truly
- 10:28knows who we are. He knows our hearts.
- 10:31He knows everything about us, and I love that that Jesus calls
- 10:36that out with an encouraging word to Nathaniel that probably
- 10:39would have struck him a little bit of man.
- 10:42He's talking about me in this way as if he knows me, which he
- 10:46does. But I love that he says there
- 10:50is. He is a man of complete
- 10:53integrity that Jesus is letting Nathaniel know, I know who you
- 10:58are. I know the type of person that
- 11:00you are, that he is a proper Israelite, a type of man that is
- 11:04blessed, that the psalmist would say is a man that's blessed, the
- 11:07man in whose spirit is no guile. Psalm 32 two, that this is a man
- 11:12who loves God, that honors God, that obviously Jesus sees him in
- 11:16his his his alone time, his isolation, that his withdrawal
- 11:20time to pray and be with God that Jesus sees that he says, I
- 11:24see you under the fig tree, that he sees Nathaniel praying and
- 11:28meditating with God. And I think that's another
- 11:31incredible thing that we should never forget that God sees us,
- 11:34he hears us that he watches over us that he sees that time you're
- 11:38in your prayer closet. He sees the time you're praying
- 11:41and meditating on his word and spending time with him, that he
- 11:44is with you, that he sees you and he lets Nathaniel know that
- 11:48I see you. I see the time that you take to
- 11:51go be with me, to meditate on my word, to pray and talk with me,
- 11:56that this would have been something that was very
- 11:58intentional for Nathaniel to hear that the God of the
- 12:01universe, the God he believed in, saw him and, and maybe this
- 12:05exact fig tree. Perhaps it was a place where
- 12:08Nathaniel had recently sat and meditated and received some
- 12:11spiritual impression from God. But it is, it is impossible to
- 12:15be sure of that. Certainly the shady, the shady
- 12:19tree of this fig tree made it a suitable tree to sit under for
- 12:23the heat of the day. So maybe this was a place that
- 12:26Nathaniel went to that God saw him at meditating and praying.
- 12:30Or this was even just Jesus saying I I see as the this would
- 12:35have been an example for Jewish people to sit under a fig tree
- 12:37would just be a saying that'd be used for a Jewish person to be
- 12:41spending time with God, meditating on God, reading his
- 12:44word. So either this was an actual
- 12:46physical tree that Jesus saw him under or just Jesus is saying, I
- 12:50see the time you spend with me, the time you spend with God, the
- 12:54time you're intentional to be seeking after your heavenly
- 12:58Father. And so it's interesting that
- 13:01then right after Jesus says this about Nathaniel, he's real quick
- 13:06to ask the question, how do you know about me?
- 13:09That he's curious as to how did Jesus know this about me?
- 13:13Just as many of us maybe would ask if Jesus said this thing
- 13:16about our inner being that we respond with, how do you know
- 13:19that? And as they, as as Jesus
- 13:22replied, I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found
- 13:25you. Then Nathaniel exclaimed that he
- 13:28responded very quickly and excitedly that Rabbi, you are
- 13:33the Son of God, the King of Israel.
- 13:35That right away Nathaniel hears this, he encounters the Messiah,
- 13:40that you know Jesus ain't just another regular man, that this
- 13:43is the Son of man, that this is God in flesh, Emmanuel.
- 13:47And he responds with you are the Son of God, king of Israel.
- 13:52This was the testimony of Nathaniel regarding Jesus that
- 13:56Nathaniel calls Jesus the Son of God, describing the unique
- 14:01relationship of Jesus to God the Father and King of Israel
- 14:05described his status as Messiah and king over us.
- 14:10And this is just an just a, a monumental piece that Nathaniel
- 14:15encounters Jesus and his response is to call Jesus the
- 14:19Son of God, the King of Israel. That he now is reiterating what
- 14:24Philip just brought to him. That when Philip said, I have
- 14:26encountered the Messiah, Nathaniel's like, yes, Sir, this
- 14:31is the Son of God, the king of Israel.
- 14:33That now we have Andrew and Peter and Philip and Nathaniel,
- 14:38they are all saying these powerful statements and truth
- 14:42about Jesus that's being revealed to them as they
- 14:45encounter him. And I just love that because
- 14:49when we read through this text, we have to remember that these
- 14:53Jewish men would have studied the Scriptures That most Jewish
- 14:56men, when they went to school, they were being, they're being
- 14:59taught the Torah on the Pentateuch, the five books of
- 15:01the Old Testament, that they knew these scriptures, that they
- 15:05learn these things, that they were excitedly waiting for the
- 15:08Messiah to come. And now here they are
- 15:10encountering him in real life, that they're face to face with
- 15:15Jesus. And so this isn't why wild for
- 15:17them to then say right away, I will follow you or right away
- 15:21I've encountered the Messiah that they're calling Jesus these
- 15:24things that they are. They're they have been waiting
- 15:26for this moment. And I love that it it says then
- 15:31Jesus asked him, do you believe this just because I told you I
- 15:36had seen you under the fig fig tree.
- 15:38You will see greater things than this.
- 15:42And that's interesting that Jesus is saying, Nathaniel was
- 15:46amazed by what he already saw in Jesus.
- 15:48But Jesus told him that there was much, much more to see.
- 15:52That there was going to be greater things that they were
- 15:54going to experience. That they were going to be able
- 15:57to walk, walk and follow after the Son of God, the Messiah, and
- 16:02experience God with them on this earth.
- 16:05That they were going to experience things that they were
- 16:08going to remember for the rest of their lives.
- 16:12But I want to dive deeper into what then Jesus says to follow
- 16:16this up in verse 51. He says, then he said, I tell
- 16:19you the truth, you will all see heaven open in the angels of God
- 16:23going up and down on the Son of man and the one who is the
- 16:26stairway between heaven and earth.
- 16:28I don't know if you guys remember in Genesis 28, but
- 16:30Jacob has this dream in Genesis 28 and it says in verse 12 as he
- 16:36slept he dreamed of a stairway that reached from the earth up
- 16:40to heaven and he saw the angels of God going up and down the
- 16:44stairway. So now we have Jesus, the
- 16:49fulfillment of what even in the Old Testament is talked about,
- 16:53that Jacob in Genesis, the first book of the Bible, that Jacob
- 16:58experiences seeing this stairway that connects heaven to earth.
- 17:02And he sees these angels going up and down on this stairway,
- 17:06which is incredible that Jacob sees this ladder from earth to
- 17:10heaven and the angels ascending to descending upon it.
- 17:13And now Jesus says that he was the latter, that he's the link
- 17:19between between heaven and earth, That Jesus is the the
- 17:23mediator between God and man, That Jesus is our high priest.
- 17:28That now anyone who puts their faith in Jesus is connected back
- 17:31to God the Father. That he bridges the gap between
- 17:34heaven and earth. That now because of our faith in
- 17:37Jesus, we now have in a relationship that's restored,
- 17:41that was broken because of our sin and disobedience to God the
- 17:44Father. That Jesus is the latter.
- 17:46He's the link between heaven and earth, earth.
- 17:49And so this is a pretty pivotal theological stance and and
- 17:54statement that Jesus is saying that just as you see, you will
- 17:59see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the
- 18:03Son of man. Just as Jacob had the dream of
- 18:06seeing this ladder and stairway of heaven.
- 18:09Now Jesus saying that I am that ladder, but even when you read
- 18:14this Son of man description that Jesus gives the idea behind this
- 18:18phrase is not the perfect man or the ideal man or even the common
- 18:21man. Instead it was a reference back
- 18:24again. Another thing that Jesus is
- 18:25fulfilling from the Old Testament and Daniel Chapter 7
- 18:29verses 13 through 14. Daniel says as my vision
- 18:33continued that night, I saw someone like a Son of man coming
- 18:37with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient 1 and
- 18:41was led into His presence. He was given authority, honor,
- 18:45and sovereignty over all the nations of the world so that
- 18:49people of every race and nation and language would obey Him.
- 18:54His rule is eternal. It will never end.
- 18:57His Kingdom will never be destroyed.
- 19:00Daniel prophesied in the OT about the Son of Man that's
- 19:05coming in the clouds of heaven. That He was given all authority,
- 19:09honor and sovereignty over all the nations of the world.
- 19:12That his Kingdom will never be destroyed, That his rule is
- 19:16eternal. That he will be obeyed by every
- 19:20single person. Jesus, the name above all names,
- 19:23the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the one
- 19:26where every knee shall bow. Jesus is the Son of man.
- 19:32Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is God.
- 19:35That this was prophesied long ago and now Jesus is saying he
- 19:40is the stairway to to heaven. That he is God with us.
- 19:45That he is the latter that links us back to God the Father.
- 19:50The Son of Man is who was promised long ago that he will
- 19:55reign and his Kingdom will never perish.
- 19:59That Jesus is on the right hand throne of God, and one day he's
- 20:02coming back to take his children to bring us with him to heaven,
- 20:06to everlasting life, to paradise, and that those who've
- 20:10put their faith in Jesus will have eternal life.
- 20:12And they're connected now forever to God the Father that
- 20:16we even on this earth can go to God to enter his throne room
- 20:21because of our high priest, Jesus Christ.
- 20:25And so I love you guys so much. I thank you for being here with
- 20:28me for continuing this journey through the Gospel of John.
- 20:31I hope that you who have not put your faith in Jesus, that you
- 20:35put your faith in Jesus and find eternal life in him.
- 20:38And those who are listening to this and know Jesus and I've put
- 20:42their faith in him. I pray that you don't hold on to
- 20:46this news, this greatest news ever told to yourself, That you
- 20:50run and tell someone else that you go spread the good news.
- 20:53That you be the hands and feet of Jesus.
- 20:55That you bring the good news to all ends of the earth, to your
- 20:58Co worker, to your family, to whoever it may be.
- 21:01Say I know the Messiah, I know the one who links heaven and
- 21:05earth. I know the one who is the latter
- 21:07to God the Father. And I want to tell you about
- 21:10him. I love you guys.
- 21:11Let me pray so we can get up out of here.
- 21:14Lord Jesus, we love you. And Lord Jesus, we thank you for
- 21:17who you are. Thank you for allowing us to
- 21:21have to be made right with God through our faith in you.
- 21:24Jesus, through your life, death and resurrection, we love you.
- 21:27We thank you. God, help us be bold and
- 21:29courageous to share our faith with others.
- 21:32God, to go and tell everyone about the good news of you.
- 21:35Jesus, I love you so much. I thank you for who you are.
- 21:38Watch over us as we continue to be in a earth that has sinned
- 21:43and brokenness God, that we have sinned and brokenness in us,
- 21:46God. But we know, we know you the
- 21:47great Physician, and I pray that you fill us with the Holy
- 21:50Spirit, that we continue to live out a bold faith, that we tell
- 21:54others about you Jesus, that they come to find hope and faith
- 21:57in you. We love you and pray all us in
- 21:59Jesus name, Amen. I love you guys, God bless.
