- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: Well, not even, I'm just some Florida, it's just summertime, y'all.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I just, these are truly best nails I've ever gotten.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: The whole time that she was doing them, because I go to embellish my mariam in winter park, and Alice is my nails.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: And I dressed the whole time she was doing Alice, like it's so good.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: I love it so much, and then she was done.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I was just like, I love, I have not stopped looking at them and staring at them.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I love Alice.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: That's awesome.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: Cal also really loved them.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: He loved holding my little, my little fingers playing with them.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: Sure he was fascinated by them.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what hero our needs loves our dance collection.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: Our needs you would be loves our stamp collections or stamps collection.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: T-shirt because Nancy has all of our merch and she wears this one all the time.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: And here's always trying to grab at the stamps.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that is so cute.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: Well here has good taste.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: She does.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, we really should do some little mommy and me little Vy questions.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, because I think this one coming out this week would be ultra cute Like can you imagine like hero and somey in a wind she goes with everything tea.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: I think we talked about this last week, but we have a whimsy goes with everything collection coming out this week.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: We're really excited about it.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we love this.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: I said that this feels like the perfect kind of combination of spring and summer.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and that's what we don't kind of at.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_01]: We're right on the cost of it becoming a summer time.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I love this new collection.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_01]: We have with whimsy goes with everything.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, a little tribute to our pal Kirk.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, our pal Kirk, but also the whimsy and in every one, the little icons, my personal favorite will always be the ode to me shells red cowboy boots.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: I know, yeah, two bears to wear like it just.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: Why is my house shaking?
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: Was there a Northquake?
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: There's not worth quite some ford of.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, am I, am I having an episode?
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, good.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't got an episode.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe someone off in the garage door, but I don't remember the happening.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: Your house shaking.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: So that when you open the garage door,
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: I have questions.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm I'm concerned either way.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's either in earthquake or your house says.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: That was a fun experience.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, is it my brain?
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what is happening though?
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, I saw it.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: I saw it.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: I saw it.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think it started shaking.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's so weird.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: Check the group text.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: No one is alarmed.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's good, maybe.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: What's that, I don't know.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's quick.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: Let me talk about, oh my gosh, I was weird.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about the whimsy collection.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: But the whimsy collection would be such a good mommy and me.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_00]: It would be so cute.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like on a hero size, some size.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like I can just so clearly see it.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: Because I also wanted to put it on a darker color.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: In case you have maybe a whimsical man in your life.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe like it on like a pepper.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: And famously mentally like colors.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: Men, you know, like, like, colors, you know?
- 4:29[SPEAKER_01]: Famously, they can only wear dark colors.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: Famously, the law just recently passed, um, no.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: I just, it was mostly because when they popped up, like, when we were like, looking at the samples, it was like the black one and then the white one.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, bright and groomed.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: We want to see.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: That's exactly what you said.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: You were like, bright and groomed.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm also really excited because we have some new t-shirts that you have new colors that aren't comfort colors.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: We do have comfort colors available, of course, because it's staple in our lives, but we have some that we really, really like some new styles of t-shirts with new colors.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm really excited about that because I've been wanting to branch out a little bit.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: We know it's tried and true with comfort colors, but we also want to expand.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: Trying to new things.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: Expansion.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: The expansion suki, yes, absolutely.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: We might have some more additional pieces with the whimsy in the future, but for right now, we've just got some, we have a new tea and we have the same old, same old comfort colors, which tried and drew love her.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: So it wasn't Earthquake.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: I'd set that!
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: That wasn't earthquake, 100%.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, what is happening?
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like my brain was shaking inside my head.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like I was like, okay, it wasn't earthquake.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my God.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: I saw it because everything started shaking.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, it's not your garage door.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: It was what was weird is all of the stars hanging from the ceiling started shaking.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like crazy.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: I genuinely thought I was having some sort of episode of my mind, you know, like my body was not moving, but my brain was, that was weird.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: Dang!
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: Wow!
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: Wanna roll that tape out?
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: I can't see it.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: Wow!
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see that.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's crazy.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's crazy.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: Good to know.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: Good to know.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad I texted everyone, because I literally said it was on the earthquake where am I having an episode.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: And then you said, yes.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: Kayla said her whole couch was shaking.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: My gosh.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_01]: I was so weird.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_01]: When you were like, it's Florida.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: We don't get earthquakes.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, you don't.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't usually get them in New York either, but it's happened.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, remember?
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm just a bottle when it happened.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_01]: And it sounded like a truck was passing by.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, oh, we had an earthquake in LA.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: In 2024, when we did our show, wow.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's because we bore these outfits today.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm convinced.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: I literally just said LA 2024.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: And then there was an earthquake.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: I summoned it.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, you can never wear red and yellow again.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: Well, at least not at the same time.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, okay.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: We're red and yellow again.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, breaking news.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: That was nice.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: That was nice.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: Back to business.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: This is going to be hard to do.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: I know, I'm like, oh my gosh.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, to get back on track, I feel like you're still talking about this whimsing shirt.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you can shop at www.gillmortise.com.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: It will be releasing this week and can provide more details in our show notes.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: Or on our Instagram, because we always post about it there, or if you're following us on Facebook, you can also see it there.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_01]: YouTube, of course, you'll also find that in the show notes, so we'll post about it everywhere.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: We're just in chat too, but I don't know what to say.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_01]: Which, again, is www.gillmortise.com.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: Love.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: So, let's talk about Richard.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about Richard.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: It is Father's Day on Sunday, and so we are going to do a two-part episode about Richard Gilmore, something that we've talked about.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: A lot over the last, probably a couple of years, but specifically over the last six months or so, when we did our Richard episode in the fall, because he is an autumn.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_01]: We brought up that we really wanted to do an episode that was dedicated to talking about the differences in his relationship with Laura Lyon worry because they are very different.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: We've talked a lot about Emily and Laura Ly's relationship and even Emily's relationship with Rory by proxy.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: But the relationship that Richard has with Laura Lyon worry is so different and nuanced but also intersects at many times.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: And it really begs the question of whether Richard
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think that that is a pretty common feeling amongst the fandom that, and Laura even says as much, and we'll talk about that in this episode today, but that Emily and Richard see Rory as the daughter they didn't have, and so we get to kind of have a doover with her.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: But I really think the way that they handle their relationships with Rory, Emily and Richard are different,
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: I think that that's really common with grandparents.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I'm sure there's so many parents who can speak to the idea that their parents were so harsh with them.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: But the moment they have a child, suddenly it's just like their angelic golden child that they do not treat the same.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: And it probably has to do with like the parents getting older too and just knowing how they treated you versus like seeing how they treat your kid, which is great.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it is great to see them treat someone that you love your child so well.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: But I love that that is shown in two distinctly different ways, because they definitely, after last week's episode, want to do an Emily specifically in Star's Hollow and how that like they relate to Laura Lye or rather how she relates to Laura Lye on each of those visits, and then
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: now looking at how Richard treats Rory versus how he treats Laura Lye really does feel do over ask but like at what point does that like shift for him or where does he feel like maybe he can get that for a lie now or can he ever overcome his ultimate disappointment of her being the smartest girl in her class and getting pregnant.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let's talk about it.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to talk about it.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to split this into two parts, because if we don't, we'll be here for hours.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: This will be a 15 hour long episode.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: And we are not going to do that to our editor carey.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_00]: We love to be there, too much.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: We want to keep her around.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: And so we're going to do this into parts.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to start with seasons one through three.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: Because there's a lot that happens.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of discovery.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of introduction to the audience through exposition via the writers and their words.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: and also through the actors, and I just think that Ed, Lauren, and Alexis, you're really brilliant job.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, diversifying all of the dynamics between the two of them.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: And so, I think that that's why we wanted to split this into was because seasons one through three are very hardy.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_01]: And then by the time we get to the latter half of the series, a lot of that,
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: calls back to this period of time that we're going to talk about today.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: So let's start with season one, and I think let's go back back to the beginning.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, with Hillary.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: The pilot.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_00]: We have to start at the pilot.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: Just no else to start.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: There's nowhere to start.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: Ready.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's cool.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_00]: One day we hope to start with the Emily and Richard Prequil.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: And then those vibes out into the things.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: One thing anthology starts start really like once we once Gilmore Girls becomes the next Star Wars then we'll be able to like, you know, decide what order we want to go.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: And episode four.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: will be the pilot.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: Before we start, there was something that I noticed in the pilot that made me think of this this topic that we've also wanted to talk about for a while, which is that Emily is team Laurel I and Richard is team Marie.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_01]: We're not really going to talk about that in this episode because I think that's a whole separate topic, but I found it really interesting that when the girls arrive at the Gilmore's house and they sit down in the living room for the first time.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: Laura likes it's next to Emily and worries it's next to Richard and Laura like Emily take a sip of champagne at the same time and Richard hands the newspaper over to worry and I think that even if that wasn't intentional there was a lot of symbolism there of kind of what we're being set up for for the rest of the series.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I do think that plays into the episode that we have today that Richard takes a shine to worry not necessarily in this episode.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_01]: We have a couple episodes too, but that there is a little bit of a line there.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's more so the intention is for Loreline Emily because as we learned in the last episode, this is a mother daughter show.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: Like what?
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you guys knew as some of us learned in the last episode.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: Raking news, as of last week.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_00]: This is a mother-daughter show.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: There was a earthquake, big, big week.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like that is drawing attention to that and by like it's like a byproduct of that.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_00]: we end up with Marie and Richard together because that's kind of what happens if like her mother ends up with her mother.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: She's going to end up with her grandfather.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that was like a like a happy accident that that ended up that way because Laura and Emily end up together on the same time of the room.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: And then we're in Richard kind of the ornamental pieces to Laura and Emily's relationship.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: They end up on the other side.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: But I like what it does because I do, I do think it's team-were team-war-life.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: And for sure, they have picked that up.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_00]: That's what it ends up becoming.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_01]: A quote from our vantage point, we've said that a little bit on this podcast.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: And it's my kind of way, and it's my kind of way.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I can't wait to have a episode about the reasons why.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: Because as I was going through all of this, there were so many moments that I picked that that I was like, oh, yes, this, this, this.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: But I really tried to keep Emily as far out of it as I could.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was like, can that be perfect?
- 13:28[SPEAKER_01]: the accreditation was hard because she and Richard are such a package deal but I wanted to I wanted us to really isolate the moments between Richard and Bory and Richard and Laura lie and yeah Emily of course is there she's going to play a role well she's there but get out of here yeah don't get next to me as someone says when she doesn't want me to run she says don't get next to me
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's really Emily.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's so disgusting.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: So in the pilot, Richard of course says to Raelic your tall and, you know, he makes some comments about Raelic.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: But nothing that he says actually carries much weight to how he feels about her because he doesn't really have an opinion about knowing that everything that he says about Raelic is a dig at lore lie.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: with the exception of she's tall, your tone is tall.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it's just kind of matter of fact, that's such a neutral statement.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_00]: Like, could not be more neutral.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: But when they sit down at dinner and worry asks Richard about the insurance business and he says his classic line, like, people die, we pay, people do other things, we pay.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_01]: Crash cars is out of this.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, crash cars, we pay.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: And Laura says, well, at least you have your new slogan.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: And she's making a joke.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: He just immediately digs in at her.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: And how would things have the motel?
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: And she's like, my man, like that immediately made me like, I hate you.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_01]: And then it gets worse.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_01]: And she's like, oh, the in, like, things are going well, speaking of which, oh, because Emily then steps in and says, like, she has been promoted to executive manager speaking of which Christopher called yesterday.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_01]: How is that a speaking of which?
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: I was that a speaking of which.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: In our like, Gilmore vocal stems, that was one that people said.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: Also, something to be noted, I think it's vocal stems.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_00]: What did I say?
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: Stems.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: Did I say stems?
- 15:13[SPEAKER_00]: It is stems.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_01]: Stem, vocal stems.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think your accent makes it sound like stems.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, with an eye.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_00]: Vocal stems.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_00]: girl, that's not like a stem of a flower, a book of stems, with an eye, the book of stem.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_01]: Say it again, say it one more time.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_00]: Vocal STEM.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: Vocal STEM.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I got to.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, I'm sorry.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, you should be, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been, it's been
- 16:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a compliment to worry that she's smart.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: they are all really harsh.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like they all speak a lot more harshly to each other than they do by episode two.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: There's just something about the pilot where everyone is just a little bit more intense, a little more harsh, a little sharper in the way that they deliver things, because I actually don't think that Richard, now I'm like, very aware of my accent.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_01]: so sorry to me to do that to you.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: I really didn't.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_01]: I'm really thinking I was like am I?
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's so funny because you don't really have an accent at all.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_01]: Like you really don't.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's just where it comes out.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, oh I forgot she's a little southern bell.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_01]: And it's so cute.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: I love a southern accent.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_01]: Case point, marrying a man from New Orleans, but
- 17:04[SPEAKER_01]: I always forget that you have like a little bit of an accent, but it's someone commented on our real Our YouTube shorts or something and they were like, it's a vocal stem, and I was like, vocal stem, what do we say?
- 17:14[SPEAKER_01]: And then I was a vocal stem, and I was like, oh, I think it was also a labeled vocal stem on the title.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's okay.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_00]: I really got it.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 17:27[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody knows what we're saying.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, everyone knows what, it seems like some people, Tara doesn't know what we're saying.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_01]: No, I really didn't.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, it's dim.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, yes, dim.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_01]: My accent is what everyone, but no, it did it.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: everything being Tera.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_00]: But all that aside, I just think that that episode does a lot more harsh.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_00]: And so going forward, I kind of took that attitude with a little bit of a grain of salt because like it feels like maybe the Richard by episode five.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: might be a little less intense in his distaste for Laura Lye in that moment, because I don't feel like he talks to her like that that directly, that insultingly again, like that, I feel like that was just kind of like
- 18:16[SPEAKER_00]: Straight up mean.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was unwarranted because when she says like, well, at least you've got your new slogan.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's like she's just making a joke.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_01]: She wasn't taking it him at all, but he takes it as an opportunity to dig at her and I hate that.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I don't I don't feel like he does that quite like that.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_01]: again, but he does definitely.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_00]: He does, but I don't think it's quite as um, it's just not as rude.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he has rude to her again, but I think that just again, everyone feels so intense in this first episode, especially Brewery, like Brewery feels very like sharp as well in the way that she talks to people.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: She often's a bit.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's just everyone's softens.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's really what it is.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but so to her.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't say that he in another episode with this, like if he had the softness of another episode, I still feel like he'd be rude to her.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't think that he would be super kind to her in his instance, especially in like a speaking of which Christopher's doing well, you take after your father.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like that's something that Richard would say at any point in this series
- 19:22[SPEAKER_01]: At the beginning, because this relationship with Christopher, I think does and I think this is just really the writers kind of stopped integrating Christopher into the story as much as they didn't at least with Richard with Richard, but yeah, I do agree with you on that and we that comes back around.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_01]: We'll definitely talk about that, especially when we get to Christopher returns.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_01]: But the first big relationship milestone that I think shifts everything is in season one episode three, kill me now.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, that is when Rory and Richard go golfing together.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_01]: And they really spend time together alone for the first time quite possibly ever.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he really doesn't want to go like he doesn't want to go bad.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_01]: No, he does not want to go at all.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_01]: He hates the idea.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's interesting because when the idea comes up at Friday night dinner, Laura Lian Emily get up and leave the table to talk about it because Laura Lian doesn't want Emily forcing her to do that.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, why did you leave those two alone?
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: What did they talk about?
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's so uncomfortable, but when the day comes and Richard and Emily are in the foyer of their home and talking about, you know, the day and Richard is frustrated because she's running late.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_01]: She was supposed to be there at eight, it's eight, thirty and they have a specific tea off time.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_01]: He thinks the whole thing is absurd and he says she's a 16 year old girl who would rather be at the mall.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I find that so interesting because his inference of Rory and her personality is solely based on Lorelei.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she would rather be at the mall because Lorelei would have rather been at the mall.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's it's an interesting to look at that, which we can talk about when we get to season six, how he kind of has like rewrites his own history, what as it comes to Rory just a little bit in his own knowledge of her when he is kind of defending his positioning on
- 21:08[SPEAKER_00]: Rory going to Yale or dropping out, et cetera, but we can get to that in that moment that it kind of contradicts each other But at this point he isn't know anything about her.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_00]: He just knows that she's a 16-year-old girl from his 16-year-old girl That is like still in his mind who maybe doesn't have anything interesting to say to him or that he would find interesting that she would have to say
- 21:30[SPEAKER_01]: And that's I think why his interest is so peaked by the time they get to the club is because she has a curiosity about him that we don't know this for sure, but I doubt Laura I ever had in his job or what he does, because she not only takes in the entire club and the experience of just being there and says like, I would love to come here just to like think or read.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he takes notice of that.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's like she's not even though he of course kind of went Heming and haying out to click off with her.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_01]: She's making the most of it.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know, she's not Pouting.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_01]: She's not sulking.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_01]: She's not rolling her eyes.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_01]: She doesn't not want to be there.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_01]: She likes to learn.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that's something that attracts Richard as someone who likes
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: to learn.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I love that her curiosity about him and golf in the club and what he does for living really interests her.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: She's genuinely wanting to know and bond with him.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: And I love that that softens him.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_00]: I also think it's like an interest in him, but he also finds her interesting because she wants to go to Fez and all the things that she's bringing up that she has her own interest in that I feel you've set interest a hundred times there so far.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_00]: But like if that's really what it is, it's like you find her interesting, she's interested in him and he's also interested in things that she's interested in.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: And it's a surprise to him.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, absolutely.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: It does kind of take him by surprise, because I think like I said her curiosity about him and her yen to travel is what really ships this conversation because he says I think traveling for a young girl is a very important thing.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: Your mother never got a chance to travel much.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: And Roy says, I know she talks about that all the time.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_01]: And he surprised by that.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_01]: He says she does.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_01]: And he's, he's surprised to hear that.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that this not only shifts the relationship he has with worry.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think it also kind of brings Laura Lyon to the conversation in a way where
- 23:29[SPEAKER_01]: He's reminded of the things that Laura I didn't get to do because she got pregnant at such a young age and had Lori, and I do think that this is the moment or at least a moment where he sees potential in her to take the direction that he wanted his daughter to take.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like when she's like, I just hope it actually happens because she then takes it as an opportunity to tell him about
- 23:48[SPEAKER_01]: the backpacking trip that they've made a pack to do when she graduates from high school and she's like, I just hope it actually happens and he says, well, we'll just have to make sure it does.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_01]: He is now like making a commitment and he talks about Fes and her traveling, you know, when they sit down for lunch with those two guys who I always call Waldorf and Stattler from the months.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: Um, because that's totally their personality, but
- 24:11[SPEAKER_01]: when they're sitting there and they chat, that's like, you know, one of the first things he's really proud of to share with them is not only a she a good student, she's going to children, she's a 4.0 grant grade average, but she's going to go to Fest some day.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_01]: What's in Fest?
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's for her to find out.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to get her to Fest.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like a switch turned on for him, but he's like suddenly like this is a lower life part too, but I think it's because of what we learn in Christopher returns about how he felt about her and her direction and her potential.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that's so much of what any sort of progression and aggression in his relationship with worry exists around is her potential.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: and her future because he's so disappointed and more alive, losing her potential and losing the future that he wanted for her and that he saw her having and now like the path is open again.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: Like this sort of having someone in his life, a young person off spring of his, like making him proud in this way and a way that he can talk about it at the club, felt
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: important to him, and it seemed more alive as younger, because one of the things not to jump ahead to Christopher turns, but it's that he had to tell people that the smartest girl got pregnant.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: It was less so that like your life was ruined, and you couldn't do these things.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's like I had to tell people this.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think that that's kind of where now it's a lining that he can tell people about Rory, he can talk about her accomplishments, he can brag about her, and it's exciting to him again.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's exactly the way that he would want to talk about her.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: 100% I totally agree.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: And by the end of the episode, he comes in beaming over a book that he wants to show her that they talked about when they were out together.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: And he found, like, set of memoirs that this author wrote and Rory is so excited to see it.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: And Lorela is kind of the odd man out here.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: She doesn't connect with her dad in that kind of way, not only that, but she's also a little jealous of the fact that Rory wants to have a relationship with her grandparents and her grandparents really, really want to have a relationship with her.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_00]: That's hard.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_01]: It is hard.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: So then when we get to see some one episode 10 forgiveness and stuff, I feel like that's the next shift or milestone and not so much for worry and Richard because that bond is already there.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we get worries birthday parties.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_01]: We talked last week about how Richard shows up to the birthday party with Emily and as you mentioned, he's a little bit more of an accessory, but during that episode, he does give her the envelopes for Fez.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Fez is a very big place.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, double envelope, which we'll talk about, too, on a talk about season.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, but I think that we've established their bond, their relationship.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: And so really this episode is about the relationship between Loreline Richard.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: Because obviously Richard has an episode and has Anjana.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what to do on the show.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_00]: You know those girls who do like the little Gilmar girl sketches, and they always end with
- 27:17[SPEAKER_00]: Oh no, Grandpa's having a heart attack.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes, that really, really makes it happen.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: Those sketches, not Richard having heart attack, but of course.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_01]: We get insight into Lorela's relationship with her father and their history when she's in the car with Luke and he's driving me to the hospital.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_01]: She says that she feels like she should be kind of going through all of the great times, because she thinks that Richard might possibly be on the precipice of death.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, all of the great time she had with her dad, shopping for a Barbie, or going to the circus or fishing, but she can't, like her mind is drawing a blank, very a year in the life of her.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_01]: And she says, he went to her work, he came home, he read the paper, he went to bed, I stuck out the window simple.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, my dad is not a bad guy, he lived his life the way he was supposed to.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_01]: He worked hard, bought a nice house, provided for my mom, all he asked in return was for his daughter to wear white dresses and go to Catillian and want the same life he had.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_01]: But did he want that?
- 28:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he cared as much about those moments, like, in their happening, he cared about the appearance of them.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she was making all the right choices.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_01]: Because it brought me to presenting Laura like Elmore, when Marie is having her coming out party and Richard does not give a rip.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: You know, what the fuck is this?
- 28:27[SPEAKER_01]: What am I doing here?
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like I want to go home.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like that's more about the pressures he's feeling for more.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and him.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's more him and Emily centered where he's like frivolous parties this and like why are we doing these social engagement?
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: No, but I think it does speak to that idea that he cares about more about the appearance of it than actually the execution for sure because something he says in
- 28:50[SPEAKER_00]: season three episode one about Chris is that Chris always like makes the right choice.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_00]: He always wants to do the right thing And I think for him doing the right thing is like Laura like going to her Catillian Laura like being top of her class Laura like going to Yale like I don't know what he actually saw for her career wise or for her life Like if it was marrying the right person because I don't always think Emily and but you're not lined and what they want for Laura I completely agree
- 29:16[SPEAKER_00]: But he just wants her to like do the next right thing and for him it was not having a baby at 16 to 17, but I think it's more so about making those right choices because like I think that she's like mixing up her parents there.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: She's conflating her parents there.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_01]: She's basically treating them like one in the same.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why this quote, this reminiscent, this kind of idea that she puts on her father, really, I mean, tilting my head a little bit.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I actually don't know that this is what he wanted, but she does end it with what a disappointment it must have been for him to get me.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what she carries with it, ooh.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he was, yeah, and actually was, that sucks for him.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_00]: And now he had a heart attack.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_00]: God.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_00]: What a terrible day to be this man.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_00]: And now you're going there?
- 30:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, tough.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm driving you there.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_01]: But she carries that with her.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_01]: She, like, loralized entire relationship with her parents, hinges on feeling like a disappointment to them.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_01]: Always.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_01]: It will never, never, ever, ever go away.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_01]: And we see that in the revival.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: Well, in that first fight, without the course.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_01]: But then when she does get to the hospital, the way that she cannot go inside and be with him alone is, yeah.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: And she actually can't even go in there in general because when Emily and Rory go in, she won't go in with them.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: She's having a really tough time.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: And she does eventually go in and see him alone.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: And we all remember that scene where he's like kind of asleep.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_01]: And then he stirs and he wakes up and she's standing at the edge of his bed.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_01]: And these are the moments when I feel like the lower lie turns into a 16-year-old girl again.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, her standing at the foot of his bed and he opens his eyes and he looks at her.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_01]: And it's clear that there's a lot of emotion there in between the two of them, because the lower lie has no idea what to say.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_01]: And he doesn't know what to say either.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_01]: They've never really been good at talking to each other.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_00]: which is interesting for someone who like quite literally can't stop talking.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_01]: Can't show her like a horror to like be kind of speechless.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I think that that's like a big moment in just the sense that like, no matter how much of a disparate point meant she feels, she doesn't want to lose him.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_00]: Like, and that's like really the core of is.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_00]: There's so much love there, so much emotion there.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_00]: But she is a disappointment and I don't think she wants to be a disappointment.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_00]: She wants them to approve of her as is.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_00]: which is like really like what's so difficult is that like they adore Rory her mistake.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_00]: Like she got pregnant at 16 and had a child and they love that child and they won't forgive her for the choices that she made to get to that moment with them.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_00]: And so like I think that's the push and pull of that is always fascinating.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_00]: and here it's hard because she like, I feel like it any person like in this moment of like having this happen to your parent, regardless of like what kind of relationship you have, I feel like it's always going to be very emotional to see them in that state, see that in that situation, because doesn't she talk about his tall, or dad's really tall,
- 32:24[SPEAKER_00]: Is that from that episode?
- 32:26[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_00]: Is that Philadelphia?
- 32:28[SPEAKER_01]: That might be.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_01]: I'd rather be in Philadelphia.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_01]: I forgot.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_01]: I forgot.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_01]: We'll tell us.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_00]: You guys will let us now.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_00]: But he'll talk about him being quite tall and seeing him and he was very soft because she's in a tree in a tree.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_00]: She's in a tree and he looked really small.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: That's coming back to me.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: Mm.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_00]: Someone tell us.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_00]: Someone tell us.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, let's talk about the big one.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about Christopher returns.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but not, it's not the big one.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they're not really a big part of that.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_00]: Actually Richard falls asleep in the big one.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_00]: That's a normal size one for him.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: But it's interesting that I feel like I don't know if this is the moment or if it started happening before this, but it's really interesting that now when Laura Lye and Borea arrive at Friday night dinner or see the Gilmourse in general, Borea hugs Richard and he like hugs are and gives her a little kiss and he always says hello Laura Lye.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, like I can I can hear that in his mind in his mind in my mind in his mind.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's not his mind, it's never this mind.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_01]: I can hear it in my mind truly, but like the like amount of times he says hello, lower my like I can lower my but they don't they don't hug they don't kiss it's truly just like a he has that affection to worry and not not that's just not that kind of relationship he has with lower my.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it's too big of a gap to bridge to get, yeah, go, they'd have to walk across a very, very long bridge, yeah, to get to a hug.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_01]: And that's a trend for the rest of the series.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: But Christopher's also there.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_01]: And Richard, of course, is very excited to see him.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_01]: He says, you always had that splash of greatness, as my mother would say, that splash of greatness.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_01]: Can I get another splash of greatness?
- 34:04[SPEAKER_01]: He says something here that does feel reminiscent of the pilot, but didn't feel as pointed.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_01]: Christopher of course returns that's the name of the episode and he has that some business success with this internet startup that he that had been referenced at the beginning in the pilot via Richard and so on.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_01]: So what's your success?
- 34:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so it's hard.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's declined.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it does Richard asks him how the business is going and then he looks at where he says I hope that you inherit your father's business sense.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I found that so fascinating, because it didn't feel like a dig, Laura, I didn't respond to it, so I don't think it was intended as one, per se.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe super subtly, but I just find that so ironic that Laura, is the actual business gal.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_01]: She's going to business school.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think she's going at this point, or if she is, it's not a, it's not a storyline.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, not really a storyline until season.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yes it is because she in the pilot that's why she shows up she's like I was just in the neighborhood I was going to business school business school.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I must have told you about that Well, if you told me you must have told me yeah, if you're sure then you must have I just find it really interesting that Richard is like Oh, worry.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_01]: I hope that you inherit your father's business sense.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_01]: I hope she doesn't I actually hope you don't at all.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you don't even remotely come close to it
- 35:23[SPEAKER_00]: But I think we're like high on Chris, like we being worried and loralize.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like, oh my gosh, yeah, he is doing super great.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_00]: But I do hope you inherit that sense.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_00]: Because in the pilot, it felt like we have not talked to this man in quite some time, and you're only bringing him up to put me down.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_00]: But now he's here, and he does seem to have some sort of success.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_00]: So like, okay, yes.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_00]: But it feels like on our behalf, more insulting now, knowing that it's all pretend he's making it.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_01]: So then of course, strobe and Francine show up and shit hits the van because they've never let this go.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_01]: So it's strobe because it's strobe.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, son was bound for Princeton.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't watched that in a long time.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, son was bound for Princeton.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_00]: He says it's so sometimes I think that you're impression like we have like built a lower around it and it's like, it's not that close.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's not, but then you watch it and you're like,
- 36:18[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, she's super spot on, she should be holding a sword while he's at that, but but it's interesting because he says, I mean, Laura Lye, what she said when she says I hate President Bush.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: This piece is too tiny for his head.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like,
- 36:33[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, all right, and she's doing it to get the pressure off of Rory because everyone's just eyes on Glory like oh, yeah, you should have a conversation with her She'll give you a run for her money and they're just all staring at her and poor thing.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's like I When you ask a comedian tell a joke tell a joke or a singer to sing.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you should sing for me I used to fucking happen to me all the times again.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_01]: We'll sing something.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_00]: All right
- 36:55[SPEAKER_00]: Right now, where's the state?
- 36:57[SPEAKER_00]: You're in this moment, okay?
- 36:58[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm sound check.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_01]: And so when this all commences, I love that Christopher drops his head and goes, oh my god.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's so good.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_00]: But if you know when your parents are like on a path towards something and you're like,
- 37:14[SPEAKER_00]: And I go, God, I help you.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_01]: And strobe says, I see your daughter's out of control is ever Richard.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_01]: He's not really addressing Laura lie.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like he is, but he starts it out by saying to Richard.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_01]: I see your daughter is as out of control as ever Richard.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that is what locks Richard in.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because it's about Richard.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's about Laura lie, but it's a reflection on Richard.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_00]: And you can see his demeanor shift.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: completely shift.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_00]: Because the way I broke my notes down was, which I feel like you guys should know, Terran, I went 500 different ways on how we wanted to talk about this episode, but my notes are broken down into like, like disappointments and like proud moments.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_00]: And you think that this is going to be a moment of
- 37:58[SPEAKER_00]: pride.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_00]: Like he is going to speak about Lourlay in such a way because he's like proud of all of her accomplishments and where she's come from and what she's done.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_00]: You realize that that's not true at all.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_01]: No, this is kind of important because or if it is, it takes a backseat to it's the Gilmore name has been besmirred.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and so he will not stand for it not in his own house, and so he grabs on to him.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, give some a little shake When she gives him a little jiggle and The strobe jiggle if he was the strobe jiggle
- 38:37[SPEAKER_00]: The dance of the summer.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_00]: The dance of the summer.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_00]: This is so much tick-tock dance incoming.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god, I can't wait to see that.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but he defends.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_01]: He, he's saying what's on all of our minds, because strobe is blaming Laura life for everything.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_01]: He's saying our son was bound for Princeton.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_00]: And why didn't he go?
- 39:01[SPEAKER_01]: Why didn't he go?
- 39:02[SPEAKER_01]: We had every opportunity to go.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_01]: She seduced him to ruining his life is basically what he says.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_01]: She had that baby worry and and does future and that's when Richard explodes.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I do think it is because, yes, what he says later is like the the Gilmore name was being torn apart, but it is more over that like then he brought up worry.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's like she had that baby and it's like that's not just that baby.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_01]: That's worry.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_01]: That's interesting right there.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_00]: She's literally in the next room.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_00]: So shut your mouth.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_00]: Lower your mouth.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_01]: And Richard Explosant says, you recant that strobe.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_01]: You owe my daughter an apology.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_01]: How dare you come into my house and insult my daughter.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_01]: Shame on you for opening all of this up again.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_01]: My daughter is very successful at what she does.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_00]: And like, which is all of us in my home.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_01]: Same.
- 39:45[UNKNOWN]: Okay.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_00]: With the strobe jiggle included in all.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_00]: But I, I just adore you.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_00]: We count that.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_00]: You recant that, so he says.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you recant that strobe.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm obsessed with that.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like I need to say that to you more often.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_00]: You were can't that.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that's just like, you know, like, absolutely not in this podcast house.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_01]: But I love that.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_01]: But is he pretending?
- 40:11[SPEAKER_01]: Is he saying that?
- 40:12[SPEAKER_01]: I know that he's pretending.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think he is, I would not doubt that somewhere deep down he feels that way.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he'd ever, I don't think that Richard's pride would ever allow him to admit
- 40:27[SPEAKER_01]: at this point in the story that she is very successful at what she does, because even when stroke tries to blame, Laura, like before, the explosion, you know, Christopher's the one's like, that's like dad's top.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_01]: And Richard says, like, I have to echo Christopher's call for civility here, a mutual mistake was made many years ago by these two, but they've come a long way since.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_01]: So first it's about the two of them and then it'd be asked about Laura lie and later in the study my heart breaks for Laura lie when she walks in and again has one of those moments where it's like she's a 16 year old girl again coming into her dad's study to just like think him and there's a little bit of shame, but there's also a little bit of there's a lot of hope there's a lot of softness there's a lot of hope like mending is maybe about to happen between yeah she's like she let she set up from like that
- 41:13[SPEAKER_01]: happy.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she thinks him.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just unbelievably touched and grateful for what you said and there for defending me like that.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_01]: I know it was hard for you and he bursts that bubble.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_01]: Just as quickly as it as it blew up.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_01]: Why do you think I did it out of protectiveness?
- 41:28[SPEAKER_01]: I guess and he laughs at that.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_01]: He said a member of my family like he laughs at it because he's like you've made it very clear.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_01]: You don't need protecting and then he goes on to say a member of my family was being attacked.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_01]: The very Gilmore name was being attacked.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_01]: I will not stand for that
- 41:43[SPEAKER_01]: And then he gets upset because he feels like lore lies like, well, I don't really care why you did it.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it does.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: It does matter why I did it.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_01]: What are you going to take away from all of this?
- 41:52[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what are you going to learn that everything's fine, that the hell you put your mother and me through for the past 16 years, who suddenly washed away?
- 41:58[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's not.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: And this is when he brings up what you were talking about earlier.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_01]: I had to tell my friends, my colleagues, that my only daughter,
- 42:05[SPEAKER_01]: The brightest in her class was pregnant and was leaving school and then you run away and treat us as lepers.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_01]: We did nothing to deserve that, nothing to earn that.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it was one thing that she got pregnant and it was of course embarrassing for him.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_01]: It was on top of that, she ran away and she acted like they wronged her, which obviously we will never truly know what transpired in that house between her having worry and her leaving.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because we get a little bit in the flashback, but not enough.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_00]: Not enough, and I will say, in like the defensive Emily and Richard, all of that doesn't go away just because now you're starting to have a relationship with the daughter that or the granddaughter that your daughter took away from you, that like you can't just like immediately forgive her for that original, the original
- 42:57[SPEAKER_00]: Everything that transpired afterwards that it's just also compounded that you can't just be like, okay So this mistake that you may We'll call that even because like every thing turned out fine, but this like 16 years of not talking to us We're still gonna hold a grudge about that.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_00]: So like yeah, it's just so like honestly family of them to have like
- 43:15[SPEAKER_00]: one thing that you get mad at.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_00]: So you bring up everything in the closet and what about this?
- 43:22[SPEAKER_00]: And this and this.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like they can't forgive the one original mistake because there's too much to be mad about and they'd have to sit down therapy and like break it all apart.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_01]: The way we have we're going to park.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh, we would be great therapists for the good morse.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_00]: We could totally do a timeline of them of like
- 43:39[SPEAKER_00]: You can be mad about this.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_00]: Let's work this out, but this you gotta get over it.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_00]: You just gotta move past it.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_00]: There you go.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_00]: You guys are holding onto a grudge for no reason.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_00]: But I think at the end of the day, I keep being like, if you guys love Rory so much, just forgive Rory.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_00]: But I think there's just too much in that space between when Rory was born to now, to like,
- 43:59[SPEAKER_00]: really be able to move over that.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_00]: It takes a while.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_00]: And it's yelling at each other at the house.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_00]: And he's in the house.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_01]: Of course.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_01]: But I do think that what really, what really got me here when it comes to Richard and the way he speaks to Laurel I, as he said, he goes on to say, there was a proper procedure to be followed.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_01]: And he loves that phrase.
- 44:22[SPEAKER_01]: Those two words,
- 44:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, good for his, good for him.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_01]: And it was marriage, of course.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_01]: And he says Christopher was willing to follow the procedure.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_01]: You weren't.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_01]: What about what I wanted to add?
- 44:35[SPEAKER_01]: Didn't that matter to you at all?
- 44:36[SPEAKER_01]: And he says sometimes one has to sacrifice something in order to do what's right.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_01]: And that is the foundation of who Richard Gilmore is.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_01]: I know we talked about this in the fall.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that that is where there is a line between him and Laura lie that just in the either one of them.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_01]: are willing to cross at this point, and I think that he sees worry and he sees like she knows what the proper procedure is to follow.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: She knows.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: She knows.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_01]: You have to make the correct decisions and you have to sacrifice something in order to do what is right.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_01]: I think that that is how he sees worry.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_00]: for now.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_00]: For now.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_00]: For now.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_00]: For the most part, mostly throughout the series.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_00]: Like, he, she can make mistakes, but like, it'll always pale in comparison to the realize mistakes.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_01]: or it will be a lower-rise fault that you made the mistake.
- 45:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, absolutely, absolutely, the lower-rise fault.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_01]: And before we get into that, to kind of put a button on season one, I think the last, like milestone moment we have between Richard and Laura Lye is the following week with Chase Bradford, each track us lovers and other strangers.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_01]: I, that Oco Day, love this dinner with Chase Bradford.
- 45:45[SPEAKER_00]: Shall we?
- 45:46[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_00]: I think that was like one of the first moments in Gilmour, we visited where like we were like so surprised by how much we loved something that we did not expect to.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_00]: We were like, oh my God, Chase Bradford, Icon, Icon, Icon, actually, Icon.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_00]: The way that he was like delivering these lines, so he ended up in the scene.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like I just so clearly remember recording that episode years ago, because I was like, whoa, there's so much fun.
- 46:12[SPEAKER_00]: This is terrible, but there's so much fun.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_01]: love it.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like a precursor to the, hi daddy moment that we all know and love with her climbing out the window in this episode is that when Chase arrives on the scene and Richard sees what Emily's trying to do, he does kind of become a chain lore line this moment.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_01]: And even when they're sitting at dinner, they're passing the coffee pot back and forth with each other.
- 46:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's just like, uh, let's get this, let's get this over with.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, it's so funny.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_01]: The word miso would be worse.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_01]: So when more like goes upstairs and tries to sneak out the window and Richard comes upstairs and sees her, I just love and adore this moment between them.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_00]: Hi, Daddy.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_01]: I know this is probably this brings up all the horrible aspects of my childhood life for you and I'm really sorry that we've fought last week and I'm really sorry that you're so disappointed in me and I wish there was something I could do to fix it but there's probably isn't.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_01]: And I can accept that because I'm an adult now and I'm proud of who I've become.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_01]: But I am begging you please do not make me go back down the hair because that guy is boring.
- 47:08[SPEAKER_01]: And Richard takes a beat and tells Emily she's not up there and she says,
- 47:12[SPEAKER_01]: And the softness that overwhelms Richard in that moment is very interesting because Ed Herman is so good at playing softness while also like you can understand that he's wrestling with this concept of of what he stands by which is sometimes one has to sacrifice something in order to do what's right.
- 47:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's doing what's right here.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think in his eyes, this is what's right.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that's what's really, really remarkable about Ed Herman.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he resin piece.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think that he just did not get enough recognition as an actor, especially in this role, because he can act so beautifully like with just his eyes and see that he's like,
- 47:49[SPEAKER_00]: Worrying against something in his mind, but the character is trying to feel one way and this is like such a good example of that That just like oh chef's kiss like perfect perfect Richard.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_01]: I totally agree.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_01]: Something that I just want to point out here When it out I didn't bring this up because I didn't want to get in the weeds of this conversation But last night when we're recording this we're the Tony Awards the 2026 Tony Awards 50 years ago this year was the 1976 Tony Awards
- 48:17[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a woman.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_01]: I can't even ship on their toes.
- 48:20[SPEAKER_01]: That just hit me.
- 48:20[SPEAKER_01]: That just washed over me.
- 48:21[SPEAKER_01]: Because when you were talking about him not really getting the recognition that he deserved as an actor and a lot of in a period of aspects I was like, well he is a Tony Award and I was like, oh, Tony's real last night.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god, the Tony's were last night and it's 2026 and 1976 is when they brought up a chorus line in the journey performances last night.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, my God, I thought maybe Kelly Bishop would be there because it's a 50th anniversary.
- 48:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_01]: And well, the 50th anniversary, I think of them opening was last year.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_01]: But the total words in 1976, of course, was where a chorus line got a lot of its recognition.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_01]: So they
- 48:53[SPEAKER_01]: so they did something but yeah um they did a little tribute but Kelly Kelly was not there that I know of at least she didn't perform or come up on stage but yeah 50 years ago at this time our Broadway babies oh my gosh what a moment yeah they took place oh actually you know what they took place on April 18th 1976
- 49:12[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay, I really thought that they were always in June, but I guess they were in April.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, maybe they wanted to stretch the season out a little bit longer.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: Those Broadway producers.
- 49:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_00]: I just like to see the picture of the two of them in my mind.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't even know how iconic they were going to be together.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_01]: They were no idea what they were going to do.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I love that.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, let's talk about season two.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_01]: season two episode one really kicks us off with a big big big moment.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's it's big for Richard and Bory and I think by proxy Richard and Laura lie because of what happens at the end of the episode Sadie Sadie.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_01]: This is of course when Laura is mulling over whether or not she's going to accept Max's proposal.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_01]: She does ultimately over the phone but also when Bory brings Dean to dinner.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but he is so excited for Rory because she's in the top three percent of her class.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_01]: He says I am immensely proud of you, Rory, and they are going to have a dinner for her next week.
- 50:13[SPEAKER_01]: She can invite her friends, presence might be involved, and Emily is just like, you know, you really, I mean, Richard is so proud of her for persevering through, like, coming in halfway through the semester, and then ending up in the top three percent of her class, and he says a true Gilmore.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, well, until she brings someone to dinner the next week, and it's not who they were expecting.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_00]: But what I find quite fascinating about this debacle, these circumstances, the situation that they end up in, is because it's so clear that Richard
- 50:45[SPEAKER_00]: doesn't like this guest, Dean, who like far be it for us to defend Dean, but we're going to in this circumstance.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_00]: Is that Dean is nothing like Christopher.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_00]: But Christopher, being with Laura lie, is how they ended up in this situation.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_00]: And in return to Fence, it doesn't always seem like he's mad that Laura like up pregnant and how to baby.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's mad that she didn't follow the proper procedure.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think that she followed the proper procedure.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_00]: He would have been like, well, great, now this has happened.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_00]: And so for Rory to be with Dean, I think it's less about the idea of her being with a boy and her being with someone who feels like Christopher, et cetera, et cetera.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's that it's someone who doesn't match her potential.
- 51:29[SPEAKER_00]: He, like, of course, Richard asks him what his grades are, what he wants to do with his life, and that just does not align with his vision for glory.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think that's what's so interesting about, like, when he meets Tristan earlier in season one, he's like, oh, what a good guy, oh, you're a good company, you're in good hands.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's like literally she's not like if you wanted to get any closer to Christopher at this point in the show You found them and so like I think that's quite interesting that like he would look at Tristan and be like He knows the proper procedure He knows what to do Versus dean.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't know what to do with his life.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's not doing very well.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'm school or he's doing well enough not well enough for Richard
- 52:10[SPEAKER_00]: that I always find that quite fascinating that he's so disappointed in Rory and upset with her that she brought this person and is with this person because it's more about he is only really disappointed in Rory when she is not fulfilling the future that he sees for her because Dean is not a part of it and it feels less so about like Boris going to make the same mistakes because I think that's what Emily is worried about.
- 52:35[SPEAKER_00]: Emily's you are so worried about like when we go back to like Roy's dance.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_00]: She is more so worried about her like getting partid and just going to get up.
- 52:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah following in her mother's footsteps versus Richard is like the path forward is the proper procedure and you have so much potential loves a P word that Richard.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_00]: That's what it feels more about them.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because he says this family has standards, you live up to them and you should expect everyone you spend time with to live up to them also.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_01]: You are a gifted girl with immense promise and you should learn very early that certain people will hold you back.
- 53:10[SPEAKER_01]: So he's worried about Dean holding her back less so Dean getting her pregnant and I find it interesting because Laura Li does kind of speak to the underlying message here by the time they get home.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_01]: She says, consider that maybe this flip out tonight possibly is nothing to do with Dean and very possibly is nothing to do with you.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_01]: You are the great white hope of the Gilmore clan.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_01]: You are their angel sent from up above.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_01]: You are the daughter they didn't have.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_01]: Dad looks at you
- 53:40[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't, I agree with you.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that it's necessarily about her getting pregnant.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's about feeling like maybe the boys that she brought home even before Christopher held her back and put her in a place where she eventually did.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we don't know.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_01]: Go on.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_01]: To get pregnant, which for him was where everything came to a screeching halt.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_00]: And like, maybe the writer's intention was to align that with lower lie and for lower lie to speak the truth to that moment, but sometimes I do think that like Richard and Roy's relationship appears to be more between the two of them because we're being like a bit of a doover for Richard with lower lie.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's like don't deviate from the path like I'm not necessarily thinking about how you were becoming your mom in any way because that's
- 54:23[SPEAKER_00]: much more of an Emily thought than it is a Richard thought.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_00]: And more so that like this path, you can't deviate from it.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_00]: And no one on this path, you can't bring anyone into this path that is going to do that.
- 54:34[SPEAKER_00]: So when Laura lies like, oh, it's about me.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, I don't think it is.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's about, I think it's about Rory and maybe you are the like horror story in the back of Richard's mind of what can happen to this girl because like,
- 54:47[SPEAKER_00]: history could repeat itself, but I don't always think it's his lower-life centric.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_00]: At least in my perception of it, maybe the writers really did mean it to be very lower-life centric as lower-life implies.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's all we can go off of.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_00]: But sometimes I'm like, I don't think you're right, lower-life.
- 55:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I can understand that.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the truth kind of lies somewhere in between because I think it's also just a Richard thing.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_01]: When I think about this episode specifically and break it down between the dinner itself and Rory showing up with a boy, I think that Richard in general has a reaction has a visceral reaction to it because of the nature of who he is because he liked to have had similar reactions when Laura and I brought boys home.
- 55:29[SPEAKER_01]: But I also think that by the time we get to, you know, the aftermath of it when we see Richard and Emily by themselves and he's pacing and honestly blaming Laurel, I like what was Laurel like thinking letting her run around with a boy like that.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_01]: Well, of course she isn't thinking, she never thinks like this is Laurel is bald.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_01]: This is not really bald.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_01]: And he says, did you hear the way she talked to me?
- 55:52[SPEAKER_01]: She sounded like her mother.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_01]: There is some comparison to Laura like there.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 55:56[SPEAKER_00]: I just think more so like the intention of where Laura is going, but like, yeah, Laura likes false.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's Laura's false.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's Laura's false.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_01]: Laura sounds like her mother.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_01]: But it isn't until Emily gets that phone call from Sukey about Max and Laura likes wedding showers.
- 56:10[SPEAKER_01]: She like it washes over her, the her daughter didn't tell them.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_01]: that she's getting married and she comes into Richard and says, I want you to call worry and apologize.
- 56:19[SPEAKER_01]: Richard is like absolutely not.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_01]: That is out of the question.
- 56:21[SPEAKER_01]: There's no world in which I'm doing that.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_01]: And she says, our daughter is getting married and Richard's face falls.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_01]: She's getting married and she didn't tell us.
- 56:28[SPEAKER_01]: When worry decides to get married, I'd like her to tell us.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_01]: and Richard apologizes to worry.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_01]: He calls me next week at Fred and I didn't or he pulls her aside.
- 56:37[SPEAKER_01]: And he is, I do not think he would have ever done that with more.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_01]: Even if Emily was like, you go and you apologize to your daughter.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_01]: He'd be like, no, I won't.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_00]: You know, with nothing.
- 56:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's like he's like we've never had a fight.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_01]: This was her first one.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_01]: And I must say I didn't care for it.
- 56:52[SPEAKER_01]: We're fine now, right?
- 56:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like he is so nervous that he's going to lose right away.
- 56:56[SPEAKER_01]: The key loss for a lie.
- 56:57[SPEAKER_00]: Can I actually say that I think that that is one of the strongest arguments for the do over the mori being there do over because like this, I think that like a true like a apology is changed behavior that like here it's like, okay, well, maybe it's not like the apology to lower lie, but it's like between the two of them, though, like,
- 57:16[SPEAKER_00]: we're not going to make the same mistakes.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_00]: We are going to change our behavior here so that Laura, Laura, the third brother that Rory is going to tell us.
- 57:25[SPEAKER_00]: And so you have to go apologize to her because we are in this together.
- 57:29[SPEAKER_00]: And if she's going to tell anyone, she has to tell us.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_00]: And so that feels like a big shift because the reason is we want Rory to tell us.
- 57:39[SPEAKER_00]: So you have to make things
- 57:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, hmm, actually, to help show my life.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_01]: Well, speaking of Dean, let's move into Richard and Stars Hollow, because I think that's the next like big milestone.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_01]: When it comes to the Evan Flow of Richard's relationship with Laura Lye, yes, Laura is there.
- 57:59[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like there are some moments with Lauray that feel pertinent, but not necessarily milestoney, but when it comes to Laura Lye and Richard,
- 58:10[SPEAKER_00]: A big moment between, well it feels like a bit of a response because like yes, I do feel like the Dean situation was between Richard and Rory, at least in conversation, but he thought it was Lorela's fault for letting her be with Dean, and so this feels like part two of that.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_00]: Richard and Star's Hollow, especially because Dean here he is, maybe they're gonna dance.
- 58:34[SPEAKER_00]: He appreciates a tall person that Richard.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_00]: But ultimately, this is him being disappointed in the ROI for a whole episode, starting for an entire episode.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, starting with the great group.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_01]: But before we get into that, I found it really interesting.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_01]: Laura Lye really wants to worry there's a buffer.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_01]: She says to her like, do you know the last time I father and I were alone together for an extended period of time, I was kicked out of summer camp and like basically they call him and we had drive home and we had nothing to talk about, but my failure.
- 59:01[SPEAKER_01]: I can't handle the entire day with him and something I never put together is that the way that Lori is talking to Laura Lyon coaching her through like it's going to be fine, everything's going to be fine is very similar to the way that Emily says to Richard like
- 59:20[SPEAKER_01]: And I, obviously, to yield a two very different results.
- 59:24[SPEAKER_01]: Now, are he different results?
- 59:26[SPEAKER_01]: But it was really interesting that some of the same language was being used there.
- 59:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, Lori is the one coaching more life through how to spend a day with her father.
- 59:34[SPEAKER_01]: And Emily was the one coaching Richard had to spend a day with his grandfather.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_01]: Granddaughter, thank you, has granddaughter, but Richard and Lori were effectively strangers.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_01]: And for all intents and purposes, Laura Lyon, Richard,
- 59:45[SPEAKER_01]: kind of are as well, but they have a deep history.
- 59:48[SPEAKER_00]: They're strangers with a deep history.
- 59:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like they just don't know how to interact with each other in any way, but kind of an argument because I think that Richard spends the whole day criticizing Laura like, because that's kind of a comfortable place for him.
- 1:00:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_01]: And also, I do think that it comes from a place of wanting to feel like he has
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_01]: He thinks he's being helpful here and he's not.
- 1:00:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's interesting that Richard sees it as like trying to offer some sage advice as someone with experience and more like only saw it as criticism.
- 1:00:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I actually wanted to wear a work jacket today, but I didn't have a jacket.
- 1:00:32[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't have one of the poo on it.
- 1:00:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I didn't feel like over the jacket.
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_01]: Jack, you're wearing yellow.
- 1:00:36[SPEAKER_00]: I am wearing yellow, but I did wear I specifically wear a collar because I was like, I feel like maybe if I have a collar, he would appreciate that.
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_00]: This is like work jacket.
- 1:00:45[SPEAKER_00]: Ask.
- 1:00:46[SPEAKER_00]: you know, feeling that I would want to make him proud at my place of work.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_00]: He wouldn't like the way that I talked to my employees, my freelancers, he wouldn't find that very professional.
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_00]: He definitely wouldn't.
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_01]: But speaking of when Richard does arrive at the end and Laura lies there doing her
- 1:01:04[SPEAKER_01]: Richard realizes that they don't have linens on the dining tables and, you know, this has been the through line of lower lies entire day and man he's on the phone.
- 1:01:12[SPEAKER_01]: She ends up talking to him.
- 1:01:13[SPEAKER_01]: She gets the linens.
- 1:01:14[SPEAKER_01]: She secures them using her lower lies ways.
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_01]: Richard, wow, her, her wives.
- 1:01:19[SPEAKER_01]: Richard's culture and she's like, listen, I did what I had to do.
- 1:01:22[SPEAKER_01]: I've known manning for like 10 years.
- 1:01:25[SPEAKER_01]: And he says these people have to respect you and she's like, well, he does respect me.
- 1:01:30[SPEAKER_01]: I did what I had to do to get the linens.
- 1:01:32[SPEAKER_01]: I win and he says this is not about winning.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_01]: This is about proper procedure and you need to listen to me more.
- 1:01:38[SPEAKER_00]: He loves a proper procedure.
- 1:01:40[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh my gosh, this man loves to say proper procedure.
- 1:01:45[SPEAKER_01]: because that is what he, that's truly the foundation of who he is following the proper procedure.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_00]: The proper procedure.
- 1:01:52[SPEAKER_00]: He was probably told to follow the proper procedure by grand when his father died.
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and it's interesting because in forgiveness and stuff, when Laura lies going on her whole spiel about him in the car with Luke, she does say like, you know, he, he was taught to have this life by his
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_01]: Barbie buying circus taking fish doing by his dad like yeah basically says that and I was like I was he I don't know but I do think tricks play to have he handed that which we talked about in episode in is it November that we talked about Richard I forget exactly when it was from last fall I am an off you want to catch up more on our Richard through his life thoughts and opinions
- 1:02:30[SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like this is such a big episode for not only his view on Lorelei as a like in her career and in her professional life, but also how she is doing in terms of her parenting because this is like, you kind of feel like the episodes ending and then Dean shows up with a car that he built for Rory.
- 1:02:52[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm so sorry, Lorelei.
- 1:02:54[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I know this is not about us deciding who was right
- 1:02:58[SPEAKER_00]: But I do feel like Richard does approach this the right way, we're more like, like, cool, he built a car, he's still with his dad.
- 1:03:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he built her a car and like that's fine because I've decided it's safe, it's safe.
- 1:03:13[SPEAKER_00]: There's like, but I'm like, with Richard, I'm like, no, you're not going to get into that car until it's like double checked because it is one hundred percent.
- 1:03:20[SPEAKER_00]: Dean's dad?
- 1:03:21[SPEAKER_00]: Not a mechanic.
- 1:03:22[SPEAKER_00]: We know this.
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_01]: He was still so serious.
- 1:03:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like surround system.
- 1:03:27[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like, that's not screaming.
- 1:03:29[SPEAKER_00]: I built a safe car to me.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm signing with Richard here, but that's not the point.
- 1:03:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's not for me to decide.
- 1:03:37[SPEAKER_00]: It is for Laura like to decide.
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_00]: And Richard is not.
- 1:03:41[SPEAKER_00]: He's not about it.
- 1:03:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and that, of course, comes after Richard C. Spray's room and that it's covered head to toe and Harvard paraphernalia and he says something to Laura lie about it.
- 1:03:51[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, I noticed all the Harvard stuff, like, I would, I would really advise you not to get her so hooked on a school and she's like, well, she wants to go to Harvard.
- 1:04:01[SPEAKER_01]: She thinks you won't hurt go to Harvard.
- 1:04:03[SPEAKER_01]: and he's like, I went to Yale, Yale is a very fine school, some are a better school than Harvard, some, meaning you.
- 1:04:08[SPEAKER_01]: And she says, well, this is not about you, this is about Rory.
- 1:04:11[SPEAKER_01]: And it's interesting, because he's right, it is about Rory.
- 1:04:14[SPEAKER_01]: And that travels into let the game speak in which we'll talk about in a little bit.
- 1:04:18[SPEAKER_01]: But he kind of gives us a precursor to that big moment between the two of them, when he says, I know more about the Ivy League system than you do.
- 1:04:25[SPEAKER_01]: So we start with that.
- 1:04:27[SPEAKER_01]: We then go into Dean with the car and then he goes to gypsies and they have the whole scene there.
- 1:04:32[SPEAKER_01]: But she gets really angry at him because at the end of the day, the sentiment that she she feels and that she's stuck with is this is my house and my town where I live my life.
- 1:04:42[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember going to your work and criticizing the way you do things.
- 1:04:47[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember you coming to my work at all, he says.
- 1:04:49[SPEAKER_01]: Why would she?
- 1:04:50[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
- 1:04:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, then she says I don't want your opinions especially in front of my employees and not in front of my friends and that was so interesting to me because it took me back to him being like I had to tell my friends my colleagues that my only daughter, you know, was obviously very different, but it still is just like this sense of shame.
- 1:05:11[SPEAKER_01]: that is issued from one party to the other where they feel ashamed of the people that respect them.
- 1:05:18[SPEAKER_00]: It has to do with one speaking his language of like the appearances.
- 1:05:23[SPEAKER_00]: And two, did I say air?
- 1:05:25[SPEAKER_00]: Did I say one?
- 1:05:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's an air.
- 1:05:28[SPEAKER_00]: Next.
- 1:05:30[SPEAKER_00]: Next, I think that it's a matter of with Laura Lai.
- 1:05:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's
- 1:05:35[SPEAKER_00]: him telling his friends.
- 1:05:38[SPEAKER_00]: And with Laura light, it's Richard putting her down in front of front of her.
- 1:05:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, front of her employees and making her seem less than, which is just not something she would ever do, you know?
- 1:05:51[SPEAKER_00]: And like maybe Richard did feel less than, making the announcement, putting out the newsletter that Laura lives having a baby.
- 1:05:58[SPEAKER_00]: And she's not going back to school.
- 1:05:59[SPEAKER_00]: So like,
- 1:06:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's very different, but I think that for her, it's just more about the fact that my dad was there, like putting me down in front of my employees.
- 1:06:08[SPEAKER_00]: So, like, that's so unfair.
- 1:06:10[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that it's kind of speaking his language just a little bit.
- 1:06:13[SPEAKER_00]: That, like, it's a little bit about appearances, sometimes.
- 1:06:15[SPEAKER_01]: Totally.
- 1:06:16[SPEAKER_01]: Even if that blouse is ugly as hell, sorry.
- 1:06:19[SPEAKER_00]: Even if she did need a work jacket to cover up.
- 1:06:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think the work blouse was a mess.
- 1:06:23[SPEAKER_00]: That blouse was a mess and it would have been fine with a work jacket.
- 1:06:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:06:27[SPEAKER_00]: Farbie at for us to agree with Richard when he was in Star's Hollow, but we did agree.
- 1:06:32[SPEAKER_00]: Just a little bit.
- 1:06:33[SPEAKER_01]: We did agree.
- 1:06:34[SPEAKER_01]: But this is also a moment where Richard opens up to Lorelie and, uh, yes, out of anger and frustration, but in a way that he does not with Emily or Rory.
- 1:06:45[SPEAKER_01]: And he tells her, like, you know, she's like, I invited you into my house and he's like, you did not invite me here.
- 1:06:51[SPEAKER_01]: You have never once invited me to your house Lorelie.
- 1:06:54[SPEAKER_01]: And he only really lets this out to her, like, I am an annoyance to my wife and a bird into my daughter.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you never have to know what that feels like.
- 1:07:02[SPEAKER_00]: That is so hard.
- 1:07:04[SPEAKER_00]: And I shift, slower, lies perspective, big time on her father.
- 1:07:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't think it takes away from what she said to him, like, you will not come into my house and overrule my word and criticize me in front of my friends and my employees.
- 1:07:16[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it takes away from that, but I think it does.
- 1:07:18[SPEAKER_01]: put it into perspective as I was talking as I was speaking to earlier about the fact that like Richard lacks purpose in his life right now.
- 1:07:25[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think he thinks he's being helpful when he criticizes her or offers her opinions even if it are.
- 1:07:31[SPEAKER_00]: The he has such a history of like working in the workforce that like he's been in such a leadership role that maybe he feels like he's giving feedback.
- 1:07:41[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 1:07:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of those things that like changes your opinion as you get older, that like, I remember being younger watching this and like wanting to skip it, you even wanted to skip it when you guys were watching it.
- 1:07:52[SPEAKER_01]: I did.
- 1:07:53[SPEAKER_01]: But it's an amazing episode.
- 1:07:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's an amazing episode and I think that when you realize that Richard is having such a complicated experience in his own life and feeling like such a burden,
- 1:08:04[SPEAKER_00]: and feeling like no one really wants him where he wants to be, because he doesn't know where he wants to be.
- 1:08:10[SPEAKER_00]: That's like such a real...
- 1:08:12[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, a real experience that like as we were getting older, the our parents are feeling.
- 1:08:16[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not something I could have related to as a teenager, but it does shift my opinion on where Richard is coming from, because by the end of this episode, where I've just been so annoyed with Richard.
- 1:08:26[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what are you doing?
- 1:08:27[SPEAKER_00]: Even if I do prefer your fashion choices in the place of work, I'm just annoyed with you.
- 1:08:32[SPEAKER_00]: But by the end, I'm like heartbroken and I can't believe you lied to Emily about all of this and you didn't tell her and you lied about Chinese food and you're going to go sit in your study and you're going to be hungry because no one made you dinner.
- 1:08:43[SPEAKER_00]: Now you just feel like a burden and your hungry and you feel obsolete.
- 1:08:46[SPEAKER_01]: That's the word he uses.
- 1:08:48[SPEAKER_00]: And you probably feel shameful in some ways because of maybe upon reflection, you're like, oh, I could have gone about this whole day differently and that my attitude contributed to the overall outcome of the way that they happened.
- 1:08:59[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm not going to change anything about it because I don't know how to do, I don't know how to make life changes like that.
- 1:09:04[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm just going to sit in my study and be hungry.
- 1:09:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm just like, oh, it's just so heartbreaking.
- 1:09:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like, how did I end up like not being like 100% more live at the end of the episode?
- 1:09:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's just because of how honest and vulnerable Richard ends up being in that moment and I'm like, dang it.
- 1:09:21[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
- 1:09:21[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted, I wanted to be mad at you.
- 1:09:23[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
- 1:09:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that really opened something up for lower life.
- 1:09:27[SPEAKER_01]: And we don't see it immediately.
- 1:09:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think that as the as the season progresses, which season two is such a masterpiece, I think that is really cool that we end up getting back in the saddle again, which is worries.
- 1:09:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 1:09:38[SPEAKER_01]: Moment with Richard when he like kind of gets brought back to life a little bit and help want it or almost immediately up against each other.
- 1:09:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what I love about back in the saddle again is because it feels like almost like Laura Lye is the one who sees that Richard was miserable.
- 1:09:56[SPEAKER_00]: Seize the one that he's like kind of now miserable in retirement, but it's working with Rory that brings him back to his purpose and that he needs to get back into working.
- 1:10:07[SPEAKER_00]: And then when he finally does, it's Laura Lye who helps guide him and so it's really just the
- 1:10:15[SPEAKER_00]: seeing him and helping him inadvertently and very directly.
- 1:10:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, Oh, love that.
- 1:10:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's what's so I've been run by us too.
- 1:10:23[SPEAKER_00]: Women run his life.
- 1:10:25[SPEAKER_00]: Women run his life.
- 1:10:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's true.
- 1:10:27[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, we did talk about that extensively.
- 1:10:29[SPEAKER_01]: We did.
- 1:10:31[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but I want to really lean into help on to because I do think that the business project that worry has in back in the saddle again, where she's the group leader and Paris is there and I love the Paris and I actually was the same bond Paris.
- 1:10:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's really Paris and Richard, but it does speak volumes to me that like Richard was in such a place in his life in back in the saddle before he agrees to do the project where when Roy came to him and asked him to do it, he said no.
- 1:10:58[SPEAKER_00]: And he was like, no, no.
- 1:11:00[SPEAKER_00]: And stuff like that.
- 1:11:00[SPEAKER_01]: And he was like, yes, you're doing.
- 1:11:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 1:11:04[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't think it's necessarily like a monumental moment for them emotionally.
- 1:11:08[SPEAKER_01]: I think it is more over-in-help-wanted on the other end of that when he's starting the Gilmore group that we see this level of respect for moralized business mind.
- 1:11:20[SPEAKER_01]: And how she is capable of setting up a business and what she teaches him?
- 1:11:24[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that Richard would ever admit that he's learned anything from his daughter until up until this point.
- 1:11:29[SPEAKER_00]: No, and I like that we see it so directly, because like I agree that back on the saddle is not as monumental.
- 1:11:36[SPEAKER_00]: I just like that Rory is associated with his journey.
- 1:11:38[SPEAKER_00]: Return to like wanting to find that purpose again, but seeing the way that Richard kind of just marvels at what Laura Liedeis and like what she just intuitively knows how to do, I find it both fascinating and heartbreaking when he kind of pushes her off.
- 1:11:54[SPEAKER_00]: towards the end of the episode because she's getting frustrated with him because she can't stay and do this.
- 1:12:01[SPEAKER_00]: And it seems like in his mind, they've set up something great.
- 1:12:04[SPEAKER_00]: She's worked so well with him.
- 1:12:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like why would they not just keep, let's just keep these good vibes going.
- 1:12:09[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just keep doing this and she's like, I have to get back to my job.
- 1:12:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I also think this is a moment where for the first time, in a long time, Richard feels excited to spend time with his daughter.
- 1:12:22[SPEAKER_01]: This is a moment.
- 1:12:24[SPEAKER_01]: That's really what they have fallen into.
- 1:12:26[SPEAKER_01]: It really wreaks my mind when Laura Lye is when Laura Lye says to him, because she draws a clear boundary, she can't come back.
- 1:12:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it's literally such a job who is doing it right now.
- 1:12:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:12:38[SPEAKER_01]: Michelle, I guess, but it's like, she's like, I can't come back here tomorrow, but he literally won't like even look at any other secretary because he's like, well, Laura likes doing a great job.
- 1:12:50[SPEAKER_01]: In what world do you think this is going to work out, Richard?
- 1:12:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:12:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:12:54[SPEAKER_01]: You can see it as a level of ignorance that he's just like, you know, oh, she can be here with me.
- 1:12:59[SPEAKER_01]: She doesn't need to go back to that job.
- 1:13:00[SPEAKER_01]: It is ignorant, but it is also, I do think, speaks volumes about how much fun he was having with her.
- 1:13:07[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, they were having such a great time.
- 1:13:09[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, oh my gosh, let's start a tab so that we can get lunch from this place and he just wanted to eat lunch with her at that their desk and talk about everything.
- 1:13:17[SPEAKER_00]: But I do think that by the end of the day or honestly by the end of that episode, he has a lot of respect for her.
- 1:13:25[SPEAKER_00]: So there's something about drawing that firm boundary.
- 1:13:28[SPEAKER_00]: Even if he was like, oh, I was having fun and now I don't know how to deal with this disappointment.
- 1:13:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm just going to go back to this cold exterior that I have towards my daughter.
- 1:13:37[SPEAKER_00]: But by the end of it, he's back to the sweet and she knows what that means.
- 1:13:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I love that.
- 1:13:42[SPEAKER_01]: Well, she, I think she says that him.
- 1:13:44[SPEAKER_01]: You packed the sweet.
- 1:13:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:13:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I did.
- 1:13:47[SPEAKER_01]: And it reminds me of what it gives to him.
- 1:13:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but also it feels a little like, um, Vorean Richard at lunch before Waldo from Statler come in and kill me now where they are like gossiping about the club and the members and stuff because like she gets it.
- 1:14:04[SPEAKER_01]: She steps into his world.
- 1:14:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's very similar the way that Laura likes to send his world.
- 1:14:08[SPEAKER_01]: She's like you back.
- 1:14:09[SPEAKER_00]: the sweet and he's less.
- 1:14:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I guess I did, you know, it's so cool.
- 1:14:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's really fun that like she can like talk to him about the work that he does, I wish that would have continued on, that they would have had conversations maybe a Friday night dinner where he brings something up and she remembers there, he fills her in about something that she learned.
- 1:14:28[SPEAKER_00]: and those first couple of days because I really like that connection between them.
- 1:14:31[SPEAKER_00]: Of course we had to go back to like discord and chaos so like we keep that going.
- 1:14:37[SPEAKER_00]: Keep those good vibes going and keep those good vibes going.
- 1:14:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but there's such a, a sense of pride, I think, in like going back to what she's committed to and not staying with them.
- 1:14:45[SPEAKER_00]: And she's in the right place.
- 1:14:47[SPEAKER_00]: She's where she needs to be.
- 1:14:48[SPEAKER_00]: But the question I have for you in relation to help wanted, do you think that part of his pride by Lorelei's graduation day when they see her graduate from business school?
- 1:14:58[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think that part of that pride exists from help wanted?
- 1:15:01[SPEAKER_00]: That like, he saw what she's capable of and now she's seeing her graduate
- 1:15:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that it leads with the fact that like this is a moment that the two of them have wanted for so long and they finally get to do it, but yeah, I think that help wanted helps.
- 1:15:20[SPEAKER_01]: Help.
- 1:15:21[SPEAKER_00]: Help wanted help received.
- 1:15:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, exactly.
- 1:15:24[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think?
- 1:15:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think I'm more so like projecting this onto the character because yeah, of course, this was just like a moment they were building up to that getting to see Laura like graduate is just phenomenal and like seeing their two faces out there in the audience just
- 1:15:41[SPEAKER_00]: moves me, especially the fact that I'm only wanted to record all of this.
- 1:15:45[SPEAKER_00]: They're just so proud of her, but from the Richard perspective, I'm projecting this feeling of like, I saw her in action.
- 1:15:51[SPEAKER_00]: I saw her helping me, like, look how far she can go.
- 1:15:54[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that from this point forward, at least when it comes to the business side of the things, I don't think we see her, or we, I don't think we see Richard or here Richard, be derogatory towards Lorelie.
- 1:16:06[SPEAKER_00]: about her career path.
- 1:16:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think that that at this point is kind of behind us.
- 1:16:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, but when we get to let the games begin, he does disparage her for her lack of knowledge when it comes to education.
- 1:16:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I do think that I know that what you're saying about like, she's not really disparaging her business sense.
- 1:16:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's not the motel vibes, it's more of what I write totally.
- 1:16:29[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
- 1:16:30[SPEAKER_00]: Her chosen career now is not disparaged, but everything else always on the table still up for sale to live in.
- 1:16:39[SPEAKER_01]: Let's get into let the games begin because there is a moment in lazy hazy crazy days of summer, the opener of season three.
- 1:16:45[SPEAKER_01]: We're of course, you know, as you already mentioned, I don't think we need to harp on it, you know, Richard is the one to talk about
- 1:16:58[SPEAKER_01]: They are no longer together, Richard is the one to be like because she's pregnant.
- 1:17:02[SPEAKER_01]: He's like of course He's going to of course.
- 1:17:03[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be there for her because he wanted to be there for lower lie, but lower lie didn't want him and so You know Christopher's always the right thing.
- 1:17:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah exactly and so come on my man Come on, you read so hard for this loser I know exactly and regardless he does he does and it leaves lower lie just getting up and walking away because
- 1:17:24[SPEAKER_01]: Emily and Laura Emily and Richard are arguing between themselves, so it's like Laura lives on even there.
- 1:17:29[SPEAKER_00]: And I will argue that's not even monumental.
- 1:17:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's just not for the course.
- 1:17:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's just it's more over that it's like they had this big moment at the end of season two between help on it and then also Laura lives graduation day, especially because it's not even just the look of pride that he offers her in Laura lives graduation day.
- 1:17:47[SPEAKER_01]: Money he gives her and he says like spend it on something like do something fun with it You know that I just think is is really sweet.
- 1:17:54[SPEAKER_01]: We get a thank you daddy You know, she's just like it's it's really sweet It's very classic like dad daughter moment of pride Is that what he says something fun or is it for the money that the Jimmy Chew money?
- 1:18:06[SPEAKER_01]: No, he says to her and Laura's graduation day put it towards something fun and I love that Yeah, it's almost like you worked really well.
- 1:18:13[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it'll end below
- 1:18:15[SPEAKER_00]: really cute.
- 1:18:16[SPEAKER_01]: But for Laura, I do feel like by the time they reach season three episode one, I think she just like, it's part for the course now at this point.
- 1:18:24[SPEAKER_01]: I feel bad for her that any time she feels like she's made strides with her parents.
- 1:18:28[SPEAKER_01]: She just gets breathed, like in one way or another gets brought back down to reality.
- 1:18:33[SPEAKER_01]: That like, it's always going to come back to this.
- 1:18:35[SPEAKER_00]: That I'm going to do the right thing.
- 1:18:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:18:38[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, exactly.
- 1:18:39[SPEAKER_00]: Years ago, I didn't do the right thing.
- 1:18:42[SPEAKER_00]: Or not even the right thing, but like I didn't do what you wanted me to do.
- 1:18:46[SPEAKER_01]: When I say the right thing, I'm speaking from, yeah, I'm speaking from Richard and Emily's vantage point.
- 1:18:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because what Laura liked it was what more like needed to do, but it always what plays on my mind is, we were 16.
- 1:18:58[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't want to get married.
- 1:18:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm sorry for finding it.
- 1:19:02[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 1:19:03[SPEAKER_01]: But let's talk about let the games begin because that, I think, is one of the biggest, Richard Lour alive, Richard Rory episodes, crossovers, crossovers for the rest of this duration that we're going to speak of, which of course is up till the end of season three.
- 1:19:19[SPEAKER_01]: And that is when they take the day trip.
- 1:19:23[SPEAKER_01]: to Yale.
- 1:19:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:19:24[SPEAKER_01]: First it starts with Richard, kind of, I don't want to say cornering her.
- 1:19:28[SPEAKER_01]: That's the jargon that Laura Lye uses, but Richard does, Richard kind of corners worry in the kitchen and asks her to view the Yale campus because he is going there.
- 1:19:39[SPEAKER_00]: and he talks about how it would mean a great deal to him to show it to her.
- 1:19:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's so sweet.
- 1:19:44[SPEAKER_01]: He's listening to me in a lot too.
- 1:19:46[SPEAKER_01]: It would mean a great deal to for me to show it to you.
- 1:19:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's so sweet.
- 1:19:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's so manipulative.
- 1:19:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's so sweet.
- 1:19:52[SPEAKER_00]: But it's like so.
- 1:19:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:19:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:19:54[SPEAKER_01]: He manipulates her into that.
- 1:19:57[SPEAKER_01]: But he, but I do think that there's earnestness there.
- 1:19:59[SPEAKER_01]: He does really.
- 1:20:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, he really does.
- 1:20:02[SPEAKER_00]: He really does want to show her and he is going to get it by whatever means necessary.
- 1:20:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:20:07[SPEAKER_00]: And Lorelei skeptical.
- 1:20:09[SPEAKER_00]: She's so skeptical, but when we get to Yale, it's quite
- 1:20:12[SPEAKER_00]: fine.
- 1:20:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's learning a lot about them.
- 1:20:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like the Gilmourns, the Elder Gilmourns, if you will, they're they're quite playful.
- 1:20:21[SPEAKER_00]: They're dropping a lot of lore on this day.
- 1:20:24[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, the way that Lorelei helps Emily, everyone just seems quite happy until everyone turns on Richard, because we just made the wrong choice.
- 1:20:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, but before we get there, there's a moment when Laura lies helping Emily and they're in the bathroom that Richard and Maria are left alone on the bench.
- 1:20:41[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yes.
- 1:20:42[SPEAKER_01]: I love Ben's small man.
- 1:20:45[SPEAKER_01]: So they're chatting.
- 1:20:46[SPEAKER_01]: He's asking her if she's having a good time and he's so glad that she is and he says it's nice being able to show this place to another Gilmore generation.
- 1:20:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know, one day when your mother was 10 years old, she ran into my office and she said, I'm going to go to Yale just like you.
- 1:20:58[SPEAKER_01]: She actually took my diploma out of my office and put it in her room.
- 1:21:02[SPEAKER_01]: She wouldn't give it back to me for about six months.
- 1:21:04[SPEAKER_01]: This place makes you remember things.
- 1:21:06[SPEAKER_01]: And that moment for me, I think also solidifies like you are the do over.
- 1:21:11[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that that has to necessarily be a bad thing.
- 1:21:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's just like this is one of the reasons why it means so much to me that you are here because there was a point where your mother would be here and she wasn't.
- 1:21:22[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's pick and choose whether it's a bad thing.
- 1:21:26[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes it's quite encouraging.
- 1:21:28[SPEAKER_00]: Other times it is a bad path to go down to be the quote unquote do over, but I think that this is very much a symbol moment of like everything the light touches Richard that he's like this could be you this could this call of this could be yours one day.
- 1:21:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, exactly So I think it has that it's like this is such a good moment that I like completely I couldn't remember when the diploma moment happened
- 1:21:54[SPEAKER_00]: but it's this because it's such on the fence of being like a really good do-over you're the lower-light the third lower-light the second do-over or going the other way of like this is like I've manipulated my way into this being the do-over and it kind of does tip into the manipulation way because he has scheduled this interview with the dean that only he knew about
- 1:22:23[SPEAKER_00]: But Mori says something along the lines after this that she would have done it.
- 1:22:29[SPEAKER_00]: That if she had known about this, she would have rather have shown up, she would have brushed her hair, she would have felt really confident, but she didn't even know how to talk in this.
- 1:22:39[SPEAKER_00]: because she was so unprepared.
- 1:22:41[SPEAKER_00]: And I like that she used the ones to kind of give it back to him because, yeah, before like when Vory goes in and it's just lower line Richard and Emily and Emily can't forget her, but we were going to not talk about her.
- 1:22:53[SPEAKER_00]: But don't get next to me, don't get next to me.
- 1:22:57[SPEAKER_00]: Richard's kind of like looking down on Laura.
- 1:22:59[SPEAKER_00]: Like you don't understand.
- 1:23:01[SPEAKER_00]: Well he kicks it off with going.
- 1:23:04[SPEAKER_00]: If you're going to get dramatic, let's go outside.
- 1:23:06[SPEAKER_00]: It echoes in here.
- 1:23:07[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like he's an overtly belittling her reaction because she says you know when I almost feel like a standing ovation is in order because she Yeah, views him as the puppet master and she references him as such think later in the series.
- 1:23:21[SPEAKER_01]: Where is it before?
- 1:23:22[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember what she calls him the puppet master.
- 1:23:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it actually might be in this episode
- 1:23:26[SPEAKER_00]: Part of me feels like it's this one, but also those are strings Pinocchio because she's a puppet.
- 1:23:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, cause worried us say, I know I am being manipulated.
- 1:23:36[SPEAKER_01]: This is part of Grandpa's evil plan to take over my life, abolish my free will and put me into the Gilmore world.
- 1:23:40[SPEAKER_01]: Trust me, Improils and Brew in my life.
- 1:23:42[SPEAKER_01]: Did I leave anything out?
- 1:23:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, oh, oh.
- 1:23:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, but then Richard here also admits to being cornering her.
- 1:23:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, he does.
- 1:23:50[SPEAKER_01]: He does.
- 1:23:50[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, this is where she says This is earlier on the episode after she says don't put me in the Gilmore world just me and pearls from room my life Let me see manipulative evil plan.
- 1:23:58[SPEAKER_01]: No free will pearls.
- 1:23:59[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 1:23:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think you bought cover day.
- 1:24:00[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wait.
- 1:24:00[SPEAKER_01]: Did you call my father or the puppet master?
- 1:24:02[SPEAKER_01]: I did not always call him a puppet master
- 1:24:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:24:05[SPEAKER_01]: And so like that is how she sees him.
- 1:24:07[SPEAKER_01]: And so it was right.
- 1:24:09[SPEAKER_01]: She was right.
- 1:24:10[SPEAKER_01]: She was right.
- 1:24:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:24:12[SPEAKER_01]: And it's sad because like it was such a great day.
- 1:24:18[SPEAKER_01]: And then Richard essentially grew into it by not being.
- 1:24:23[SPEAKER_01]: truthful and by being manipulative.
- 1:24:25[SPEAKER_01]: And you're right, he does admit, you know, she's like, you corner her alone the other night without me there.
- 1:24:31[SPEAKER_01]: Of course I did, you wouldn't let her go.
- 1:24:32[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I wouldn't.
- 1:24:34[SPEAKER_01]: I knew that's the last thing in the world that you could want, would be for worry to go to Yale.
- 1:24:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I think we get that introduction and Richard and Star's Hollow, they're playing the long game with this one, which I quite like.
- 1:24:44[SPEAKER_00]: They really are.
- 1:24:44[SPEAKER_00]: But I love it.
- 1:24:46[SPEAKER_00]: I don't love this.
- 1:24:46[SPEAKER_00]: But I love it as Richard is talking down to Laura Lye about all of this, that Rory is the one that comes out and was like, I would have done this.
- 1:24:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like, but like you made, you made me feel less than here because I wasn't prepared.
- 1:25:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I like that he shoots that, she shoots that back at him because it's just like really where the crossover exists of like, Laura Lye is disappointed and Richard and the way that he went about this and Richard is like disappointed and Laura Lye that she's not going to let Rory have this thing that they had, which Emily speaks to later, but we won't speak to and Rory's the one that comes out and she's like, I'm disappointed in you.
- 1:25:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's like just really like Spider-Man's not pointing at each other all pointing at each other 100%.
- 1:25:28[SPEAKER_01]: Because to take it back to Lorelai and Richard, she says to him my whole life you've tried to control everything and if you didn't get to control something then you just didn't deal with it and that takes it back to the public master comment.
- 1:25:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you couldn't control me.
- 1:25:38[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't deal with me and he says this is this has nothing to do with you.
- 1:25:42[SPEAKER_01]: This is about very embrace education which frankly, Lorelai is something you know nothing about and Lorelai is excuse me.
- 1:25:47[SPEAKER_01]: You never went to college.
- 1:25:48[SPEAKER_01]: Let alone an Ivy League college.
- 1:25:50[SPEAKER_01]: You don't know the first thing about the system.
- 1:25:52[SPEAKER_01]: He's getting heated as he's talking about this, or the way it works.
- 1:25:55[SPEAKER_01]: I do.
- 1:25:56[SPEAKER_01]: I went through it.
- 1:25:57[SPEAKER_01]: You want me to go to Harvard that badly.
- 1:25:58[SPEAKER_01]: We'll sort of thousands of other mothers.
- 1:26:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yale is an excellent school to equal of Harvard and every wakes up to one.
- 1:26:03[SPEAKER_01]: I went here.
- 1:26:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm an alumnus.
- 1:26:04[SPEAKER_01]: That makes it easier for worried to get in.
- 1:26:06[SPEAKER_01]: And if you had any idea about the way the system works, you'd know this.
- 1:26:09[SPEAKER_01]: So here it is.
- 1:26:10[SPEAKER_01]: I knew we would eventually get to the big.
- 1:26:12[SPEAKER_01]: My daughters will lose her poor me.
- 1:26:14[SPEAKER_01]: The future is squandered.
- 1:26:15[SPEAKER_01]: The Gilmore name's Sully Speech.
- 1:26:17[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's what I was saying earlier in like these he's crazy is that eventually it always comes back to this.
- 1:26:24[SPEAKER_01]: And Richard doesn't even give that the time of day.
- 1:26:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to leave worries education to chance simply because I might risk offending you.
- 1:26:31[SPEAKER_01]: Her future is more important than your pride.
- 1:26:33[SPEAKER_01]: which is true, her future is more important than your pride.
- 1:26:36[SPEAKER_01]: And that is something Laura like did need to hear because he does say like, of course she can't go to Yale and Laura is like, and how is that exactly?
- 1:26:44[SPEAKER_01]: Because I went here and she's like, oh right, the crazy breeze in.
- 1:26:46[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, no, the crazy breeze in you.
- 1:26:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so excited.
- 1:26:49[SPEAKER_00]: That's the real reason.
- 1:26:50[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's this episode that things kind of crack open because by the end of it, they're both looking at the Yale pamphlets.
- 1:26:56[SPEAKER_00]: And we need it this.
- 1:26:58[SPEAKER_00]: But I think what's interesting here is like to the point
- 1:27:02[SPEAKER_00]: insult her and her career.
- 1:27:06[SPEAKER_00]: He's insulting her by means of not knowing enough in order to guide Rory.
- 1:27:11[SPEAKER_00]: Like you don't have enough to guide her towards the potential that we see her.
- 1:27:16[SPEAKER_00]: You don't know the proper procedure as he is alluding to here that it's more about you're not equipped to take Rory on this path.
- 1:27:25[SPEAKER_00]: We are.
- 1:27:26[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's less about what she's doing and more of what she hasn't done, but all in the name of servicing We're ready.
- 1:27:33[SPEAKER_01]: And it's interesting because Rory, like you said, is mad on her own accord.
- 1:27:37[SPEAKER_01]: He initially thinks like, it's about lore-like.
- 1:27:39[SPEAKER_01]: So why did you do that?
- 1:27:40[SPEAKER_01]: Do what?
- 1:27:41[SPEAKER_01]: Why did you make this appointment without telling me?
- 1:27:42[SPEAKER_01]: Rory, I know this appointment upset your mother, but this was an important opportunity.
- 1:27:45[SPEAKER_01]: Because I know it was an important opportunity.
- 1:27:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I can't believe you didn't prepare me for it.
- 1:27:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and that's the thing is that like,
- 1:27:51[SPEAKER_01]: Richard anticipating Laura Lye being upset actually made him forget about worry.
- 1:27:58[SPEAKER_01]: He says he was thinking about worry through this, but he kind of wasn't.
- 1:28:02[SPEAKER_01]: He was thinking about Laura Lye.
- 1:28:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I think that's quite fascinating about, like, a shift for Rory and Richard here is because it really, it really alludes to being the do-over because he wants to control the path, he wants to control the circumstances, but he's not really thinking of the person in the circumstances that she really is that smart, that she is that forward thinking that
- 1:28:27[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of this desire is coming from her, even if it originated from Laura Lye like the whole going to Harvard, because two-year-olds just don't know what Harvard is, can confirm.
- 1:28:37[SPEAKER_00]: Unless you tell them, I still need to ask some of you what Harvard is, would love to give you all the answer.
- 1:28:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'll record it for you, Tara.
- 1:28:45[SPEAKER_00]: But it came from Laura Lye, but it grew and grew and grew and
- 1:28:55[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I did mess up a little bit because this girl was smart and did know what she wanted and could have done this and like honestly I think that in this moment she's like I would have done this for you.
- 1:29:07[SPEAKER_00]: I do think she would have done it for herself, too.
- 1:29:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm being prepared.
- 1:29:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm being prepared.
- 1:29:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she really wanted to be prepared.
- 1:29:14[SPEAKER_01]: She was like, he said, I'm sure you were nervous and she was like, I didn't have to be that nervous.
- 1:29:17[SPEAKER_01]: I could have been calm.
- 1:29:18[SPEAKER_01]: I could have brushed my hair.
- 1:29:19[SPEAKER_01]: I never would have worn this.
- 1:29:20[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, none of that matters.
- 1:29:21[SPEAKER_01]: It matters to me.
- 1:29:22[SPEAKER_01]: I like being prepared.
- 1:29:23[SPEAKER_01]: This is nothing to do with mom.
- 1:29:25[SPEAKER_01]: If you really want to me to take this meeting, I would have done it just because you asked me to and I would have done it right.
- 1:29:29[SPEAKER_01]: and I love that like it's not necessarily a fight it's just her being like no this has nothing to do with mom stop making it about mom it's not about her it's about me and you didn't think about me you didn't consider me in this you consider you you consider for her and no one considered me and I I love that I love that they were able to achieve that with just this conversation everybody ends up at matter Richard including Emily don't you even look at me
- 1:29:54[SPEAKER_00]: We love her and the Emily goes on to have like a chat with Laura live out at which we can talk about some other time But I do feel like this is like a real shift in the do-over because everyone has been considering it of like this is the do-over of Laura lie, but realizing Lori maybe wants to have for herself to like
- 1:30:15[SPEAKER_00]: she has agency here.
- 1:30:16[SPEAKER_00]: Let's let her have some totally do.
- 1:30:19[SPEAKER_00]: They do let her have some agency.
- 1:30:21[SPEAKER_00]: A little bit later because I'm still mad about Yale.
- 1:30:24[SPEAKER_00]: But once she does decide to go to Yale, it feels like wow, look at this, look at all of us, we're family, we're a family, I know.
- 1:30:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I think happy birthday, baby.
- 1:30:37[SPEAKER_01]: is a prime example of that.
- 1:30:38[SPEAKER_01]: It shifts the tone with everybody.
- 1:30:41[SPEAKER_01]: It starts with this joy of Rory going to yell.
- 1:30:44[SPEAKER_01]: She's going to yell one of the best cold opens.
- 1:30:46[SPEAKER_01]: So good.
- 1:30:47[SPEAKER_01]: The series is we did earlier this year, but she's going to yell in the excitement and the pride that Richard has.
- 1:30:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'll teach you the fight song.
- 1:30:55[SPEAKER_01]: And he's so excited.
- 1:30:57[SPEAKER_01]: And Laura lie is excited by the time we get to the middle of the episode when Richard uses Karen, his secretary who Laura lie encouraged him to hire and help one head and wants to set up a meeting with her so they could go to lunch so they could talk about something.
- 1:31:12[SPEAKER_01]: He shares with her that.
- 1:31:14[SPEAKER_01]: When she was born, he made an investment in her name, and that investment has not been liquidated because the property was sold.
- 1:31:22[SPEAKER_01]: And he is so happy to give her this money, but I think a little more matter, a fact than she is about it because $75,000 is a lot.
- 1:31:32[SPEAKER_00]: That's a lot of money.
- 1:31:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a lot of juice.
- 1:31:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot of juice.
- 1:31:36[SPEAKER_00]: What are those?
- 1:31:37[SPEAKER_01]: Shoes.
- 1:31:40[SPEAKER_01]: But this is a really beautiful moment between the two of them.
- 1:31:43[SPEAKER_01]: I get to keep $75,000 and he's really happy to give it to her until she gives it back to them.
- 1:31:51[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like such a good moment that they seem so happy, it's not a present, it's what she's owed, he doesn't want her to see it as any sort of gift.
- 1:32:02[SPEAKER_00]: This is her money and he is legally obligated to give it to her and it just seems like this nice connection.
- 1:32:08[SPEAKER_00]: And you're like, this is not going to last for very long is it because why would she think that the best thing to do was to give it back to him?
- 1:32:15[SPEAKER_01]: Well, really to give it to her mom.
- 1:32:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:32:19[SPEAKER_00]: And give it back to them.
- 1:32:20[SPEAKER_01]: Very upset with her.
- 1:32:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because she wasn't supposed to bring it up.
- 1:32:23[SPEAKER_00]: I met you for lunch in the middle of the day.
- 1:32:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think that that was like reason enough.
- 1:32:28[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you look, when it might ever go up with you, yeah, exactly.
- 1:32:32[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 1:32:32[SPEAKER_01]: And so that of course shifts the tone with both her parents.
- 1:32:35[SPEAKER_01]: And she doesn't go to Friday night dinner for the rest of the season.
- 1:32:39[SPEAKER_01]: She then, it's not until those are strings Pinocchio with that A. Laura, like, sees her parents again.
- 1:32:45[SPEAKER_01]: But B. Rory goes to them and sits down with them to reignite this requirement for Friday night dinner in the form of them paying for Yale.
- 1:32:54[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, I wouldn't say this necessarily like a milestone between Rory and Richard exclusively.
- 1:32:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the last kind of like true moment is here in Happy Birthday Baby, but just to kind of put a button on season three that's where we leave everybody.
- 1:33:09[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I do feel like in the question of like, is Rory the lore I do over for Richard that this is Lorelei has done this already.
- 1:33:17[SPEAKER_00]: And so like in some way, yes, like they're getting this in a very different roundabout way that Rory is coming to them now and asking for money.
- 1:33:26[SPEAKER_00]: And that same positive outcome for them.
- 1:33:30[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like, the way that Laura liked it, it was like in such agony.
- 1:33:34[SPEAKER_00]: She did not want to do this, was that the last resort that she had for Rory.
- 1:33:39[SPEAKER_00]: And so the result for them was to get to see them more often.
- 1:33:42[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think that this kind of like, Rory doing it as well, the Laura live part two of asking for money is like maybe the good part of the do over for them.
- 1:33:54[SPEAKER_00]: The doover always feels like positive in their regard, but like on our end that maybe this is good Maybe it's taught Rory, you know, this connection with her grandparents quite quite strange Quite strange connection.
- 1:34:05[SPEAKER_00]: What we all love to go to our grandparents and ask for Thousands and thousands of dollars in exchange for you can make me dinner What what did you make me dinner?
- 1:34:14[SPEAKER_01]: You give me money
- 1:34:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's not even.
- 1:34:20[SPEAKER_00]: You make me dinner.
- 1:34:21[SPEAKER_00]: You give me money.
- 1:34:23[SPEAKER_00]: That's everybody wins.
- 1:34:25[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone's one.
- 1:34:26[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone wins.
- 1:34:28[SPEAKER_00]: Which I think is just like it's just like a nice button.
- 1:34:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's a nice button in the do-over.
- 1:34:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like that brings us to a really beautiful breaking point in our coverage of this topic because there are a lot of ways in which seasons one through three and everything we talked about today really builds to the remainder of the series and Richard's relationship with Rory and Laura Lie respectively because there are a lot of ways in which seasons one through three are setting Richard and Laura Lie and Richard and Laura's relationships up for a shift in seasons four through seven.
- 1:34:59[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll have more to say on that next episode.
