- 12:36Then you're gonna go through. This problem?
- 12:39He does have it. That's why everyone always asks
- 12:41for Dusty to do the intro. Yeah, yeah.

- 12:45He has that sexy, therapeutic voice, that's why.
- 12:48Not this. Strong.

- 12:57extraordinaire. To my left, as always, we've got
- 13:02famous fan of Sir McAllister KK. And to her left, we've got the
- 13:08Sex and the City AVG&OEP. Ohh.
- 13:11Sex and the City. OK.
- 13:13Hi guys. It's me, Emily.
- 13:15I really have set up my intros better.
- 13:19I need to do better on your intros.
- 13:21Well, I'm here today. We'll try again tomorrow.
- 13:26What do we have here? Who do we have here today?
- 13:30With us today, we've got a special duo and I've had the
- 13:35pleasure of seeing perform live. We actually just got a special
- 13:40treat from them because we're coming live from the cotillion
- 13:43Today. Took Alex up on his offer, but.
- 13:47Joining us is the Estrada Brothers Benji Cosway.
- 13:52Was that was I? Welcome, welcome.
- 13:56Can you tell him, a 90s kid, when I say where's that?
- 14:01Yes, yes. He's like chilling killing, drug
- 14:04killing, well shot, Colin. Well guys, thank you for coming
- 14:13to our podcast. Earlier.
- 14:15You guys gave us a little sneak peek of your music and it was
- 14:19amazing. What did you think, Fanny?
- 14:21My God, I wanted to dance. So was the song called Candela
- 14:25Yes, in La Noche. I forgot you.
- 14:29Have to tell for the non Spanish people.
- 14:34Oh yeah, speaking people, not me cuz I speak Spanish, but like Oh
- 14:38yeah, what? And it's a little.
- 14:40Strange, I said. You were yellow.
- 14:42I'm I'm yellow and brown the same time and you mix it
- 14:45together, it gets a good combination.
- 14:49No one will bat an eye if you're at the carnet saw that like.
- 14:52No, I'm always invited to the Carnet, Yeah.
- 14:54Always. Always.
- 14:56Always. So yeah, it's candela and
- 14:59loskuro. But now that you said that, that
- 15:01totally sounds like the nightclub remix.
- 15:04So Candela and La Noche is totally what you're gonna be
- 15:10doing. It's gonna be the remix name,
- 15:11yeah. Candela and Loskuro, though.
- 15:13Okay. So how long did it take you guys
- 15:16to? That's an original, right?
- 15:17Yes. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:18Okay. What?
- 15:19We'll just go into that part first.
- 15:21You know, we haven't even fully introduced you guys yet.
- 15:24Let's just start real quick, actually, never mind backing up
- 15:26again. Hosuan, Benji, the Strada
- 15:29brothers. They play trumpet, guitar, bass,
- 15:31drums, a lot of other crap. Fingers.
- 15:36Fingers. They fingering all right.
- 15:40That's what the kind of podcast this is.
- 15:42Okay, by the way. By the way, we're explicit.
- 15:45Yeah, we don't get cancelled here, all right?
- 15:49So when I share on Facebook, I'm gonna do the specific share or?
- 15:53You can not share this specific family member.
- 15:58We could make it PG. 13 No, no, no, no, no, it's fine.
- 16:02Let's let's go. Yeah, let's go.
- 16:04No, we me and Venti need. This RR actually, we don't try
- 16:08to say that explicit. We just now we're like, you know
- 16:12what, there's going to be a couple cuss words in here.
- 16:14We're going to say a couple stuff.
- 16:15We just, we just, we just say it.
- 16:17We're like, yeah, we're not even going to try to pretend that
- 16:20we're. Not anyways.
- 16:21Anyways, Good. Let's talk about you guys, OK?
- 16:24Are you guys born and raised from Wichita?
- 16:27No. Raised.
- 16:28Raised Yes. Raised, Born, not born, No.
- 16:30Where are you guys born? We were born in Los Angeles.
- 16:33Okay la two up. To two Mexican immigrants, our
- 16:37parents yeah, Felix and Anna. They're from Jalisco, and I was
- 16:41Calientes. Oh, OK, We're kind of Pisas.
- 16:44Yeah. I'm.
- 16:46I'm sucking the pisy. I was Calientes a little bit.
- 16:50Sounds like I was. I was Chiles.
- 16:51Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Which I had for the first time,
- 16:55like a year ago. What it's.
- 16:57In October? Yeah.
- 16:58OK. It's crazy.
- 16:59I was like, I called my mom immediately.
- 17:00He's like, why didn't you tell me?
- 17:02But quino me. He's dead.
- 17:03Yeah. Yeah.
- 17:04So, yeah. Well, I mean, we're not very
- 17:06tropical like I was. Calientes is in a tropical area.
- 17:09Correct. Right.
- 17:10And it's stuck at the gases in. So it's like we don't, we
- 17:12wouldn't have a lot of seafood like that, you know?
- 17:14Yeah. They didn't make it at home all
- 17:16the time. Like, yeah, yeah, cuz we don't,
- 17:18you know, like, we're gonna go to a Lago, We're gonna go to La
- 17:20Lago. Na.
- 17:24Yeah. Porous frijoles.
- 17:25No palace. Yeah.
- 17:28Why does my brother call? Cata de nopal to some people.
- 17:32What kind of insult is that? Like what?
- 17:34Do you tell people they have a cata de nopal?
- 17:36Yeah, it's because they're trying to act like they're not
- 17:38Mexican, but they're like hella Mexican looking.
- 17:41And so it's kind of insulting, but it is insulting.
- 17:44Cata de nopal for you know, on Spanish speakers is face of
- 17:48cactus, Cactus of cactus face, yeah.
- 17:52Cactus face OK because I was confused.
- 17:54I was like. What are they saying here?
- 17:57I'm like Benny told me. Yeah, no, it's like, and you
- 18:01said it's a saying. So it's like when you when you
- 18:03pretend that you're not what you are and you're like, Oh no, I'm
- 18:10too good to be Mexican. I'm too good to eat healthy.
- 18:13As with my food, I'm too good for any of that.
- 18:16And you're like, okay, what the freaking no pile in your in your
- 18:19forehead or seriously. But that's like saying like
- 18:22there, there no part of you looks white.
- 18:25I thought it. Was a skin color joke for some
- 18:29reason and I was like, sure, it stems probably from because
- 18:32Mexicans can be a little racist. It's true.
- 18:35It's true. Yeah.
- 18:37So, OK, so moving on, Anywho, so your guys were born in LA, What?
- 18:44Part of LA or just like what part?
- 18:46Of like 20 minute bike ride from Venice Beach, Culver City.
- 18:50Technically Culver City. We went to elementary school at
- 18:53Braddock Drive Elementary. So how long did you guys live
- 18:58there? My cousins also went there, not
- 18:56that. Until I was 10.
- 19:01So 1992 and then plus 10 + 10. I have perfect pitch.
- 19:08But I suck at numbers. My natural talent isn't quick
- 19:12math. Hey, but you still got the other
- 19:14one. It's fine.
- 19:15People have calculators now for that reason.
- 19:17Yeah, that's fine. Three 2003 we moved to.
- 19:18Yeah. No, we moved here in 2002,
- 19:21right? Yeah, 2.
- 19:24Fort Wayne IN for like 9 months. Didn't work out.
- 19:27We're like, this sucks this is too Midwest.
- 19:28And yeah, and the winter, that was the first time we
- 19:32experienced winters cuz it was la, la you have rain in the
- 19:36winter, not snow. And so we were in Fort Wayne IN
- 19:40just like so. That's a funny story.
- 19:42Now, with your chunk last, you're like, no, this is snow,
- 19:47right? So cold.
- 19:49Dude okay. So there's a really sad story.
- 19:52I'm gonna try to keep it together while I tell us it's
- 19:54kind of emotional. We're we're fresh from LA like
- 19:58first time in the Midwest. We're experiencing like cold for
- 20:01the first time, like at that level there's like there's snow
- 20:05And we were wearing our LA cold jackets like we were me and him
- 20:08were like 5th and 4th grade or something like that.
- 20:11Yeah, 5th and 4th grade. And we come to school in our
- 20:14jackets and my parents are super broke like we're super poor
- 20:18like. Didn't know what we were doing.
- 20:20Like, didn't have, you know, any idea.
- 20:22And then one of the, I think the vice principal, she like,
- 20:25noticed and she like, pulls us out of class one day.
- 20:28And it's super weird. There was no warning.
- 20:30There was no, like, like notifying the parents or
- 20:33anything. I don't think, like she just
- 20:35pulled us out of class. And she's like, you guys are
- 20:36coming with me. And I was like, what's going on?
- 20:38And she's like, it's a surprise. I actually don't remember what
- 20:42the conversation was. But next thing I know, we're at
- 20:44like a Salvation Army. And she's like, you guys can
- 20:48pick whatever jacket you want. And we were like, that's so
- 20:52neat, really. They were so cool.
- 20:54We were like all the colors. Yeah, they were.
- 20:56So there were so many cool jackets, like winter jackets,
- 20:58and we're like, finally cool. And, like, I felt spoiled at the
- 21:02time, but now that I look back, I'm like, damn, that's some
- 21:04that's some poor people. Shit, dude, There's actually
- 21:08somebody out there. Was really sweet enough to do
- 21:10that for you guys. Not even knew who you were.
- 21:12My mom. When we came home, my mom was
- 21:14like, what? Like, yeah.
- 21:15Where'd you get these jackets? And we're like this nice lady
- 21:18took us and she gave it to us for.
- 21:20First White Lady, Actually, she was a black woman.
- 21:24Yeah, I love that. Yeah.
- 21:26Well, I love everything, but like, that's nice.
- 21:28She probably knew what we were going through, to be honest.
- 21:30Like, she knew the struggle. And yeah, so that was, that was
- 21:34a cool story, the cool memory. That's good.
- 21:36Yeah, that's nice. See, there's still good people
- 21:40out there too. Yeah, it is so funny.
- 21:42When you're young, you don't understand that concept of money
- 21:46like that. You know, like or your parents
- 21:49might not have it all, but they don't ever really make you feel
- 21:52poor. Or you don't remember being
- 21:54poor, because I remember. Like we used to go to the
- 21:56Salvation Army, we used to go to places like that all the time.
- 21:59And I just thought it was cool like it.
- 22:02Was like, you know it's. Funny.
- 22:06Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:07So, like, I think like as a kid, you just don't always understand
- 22:11that. Or like, you know, just so it
- 22:13was so fortunate that it sounds like we had similar upbringings
- 22:17and that, like, our parents didn't.
- 22:19Like say, like, we are poor. And I'm not even saying that
- 22:22because we were pretty well off too.
- 22:24But I remember when we first moved to the States, it was
- 22:26stuff like that. Like, you know, you're
- 22:29carpooling, you're going to Salvation Army and now like,
- 22:32kids do that for fun. You know, now that I think about
- 22:35it, like if we had stayed in LA, my dad was making bank and he
- 22:40was getting like the good, like gardening routes.
- 22:42He was one of those typical like stand in the line outside of
- 22:45Home Depot guys. And like, he was getting like,
- 22:49really nice houses, like producer houses and stuff by the
- 22:52time, like, by the time right before we left.
- 22:54And I keep thinking about how like, man, we probably would
- 22:57have been pretty fine off, like, by now.
- 23:00But my dad chose to, like, start over.
- 23:02And because he, he became a preacher.
- 23:04And so he, like, moved. He was like, this is my calling.
- 23:07I'm going to be a preacher. And so, like, there was a need
- 23:10for a pastor in the Midwest. And he just, like, sold
- 23:13everything. He sold his trucks.
- 23:16He sold like, all our nice shit, dude, like.
- 23:19We just like the Prince's house, too.
- 23:23I know that he did. That's a fun fact.
- 23:28He did work on Michael Jackson's house one time.
- 23:31It's so cool. Not on his own.
- 23:32He was working as a helper for the house, but it was like, he
- 23:36said, like Janet Jackson or like I I can't remember.
- 23:39There's just a lot, a lot of famous people who worked for.
- 23:41Like, yeah, I. Remember.
- 23:42Like crazy. Yeah.
- 23:43I mean, like, uh, who's yeah, Sylvester Stallone.
- 23:46I think they like, they like mowed his house.
- 23:48What? I didn't know that one.
- 23:50They a bunch of producer guys and like musician, like guys
- 23:54tied to The Beatles, like producer guys.
- 23:56I don't remember what their names are, but it's the bass
- 23:58player for Paul McCartney and the Wings.
- 24:00Oh. Shit, that's cool, Yeah.
- 24:03Nice. So he's tried to like I think he
- 24:06took too long but he tried to reach out one time to one of the
- 24:08guys and like I don't think they answered, but like they they had
- 24:13a kind of close relationship with him and a lot of those
- 24:15people. Like cuz he was my dad's an
- 24:17awesome dude. Like, yeah.
- 24:18Yeah, he's a good he treats people well so and he does a
- 24:21good job when he works so. We think a lot of guys like our
- 24:25parents came here with nothing, like nothing on their backs or
- 24:27nothing, you know, whatsoever. If they could, if they can make
- 24:30it still to this far, we can do it as well.
- 24:33Absolutely. Yeah.
- 24:33Like, honestly, I I feel like me and Benji are really driven.
- 24:38We've had a lot of like friction with people sometimes that like
- 24:43don't want to move as fast. And there are a lot of people
- 24:46here can get really content, you know, and like, comfortable.
- 24:49And it's like, you know, I could try to pick that apart.
- 24:52But, like, it's always all I know.
- 24:54Is that where we come from? It's like dad being an
- 24:57immigrant, starting from scratch, starting over many
- 25:00times. Yeah, kind of getting, like,
- 25:03kind of fucked over a lot of times in his life, too.
- 25:07And I'm saying that for it, but it's you can bleep that out if
- 25:10you. Want No, no we don't.
- 25:12We don't we. Don't edit Whatever's recorded
- 25:16his plays and then he started. There's some editing, like for
- 25:20example for so just so you can get an idea.
- 25:22When we moved here, he had a full church like that from the
- 25:26pastor that left and someone spread rumors about him and
- 25:30ended up a lot like the whole church ended up leaving except
- 25:33for like one or two family members.
- 25:35Uh, or families in general and uh and so there.
- 25:39But he kept going and he didn't like, he didn't blame them.
- 25:42He like forgave them and like didn't try to like make things
- 25:45right. He's just like he's like you
- 25:46know what? Like that there's their own
- 25:48karma almost, you know and he just kind of kept going, uh.
- 25:52But that that drive that he had, man, we I feel like me and medji
- 25:56really have that and uh and we're just never gonna give up.
- 26:00We're gonna keep pushing our our art, you know?
- 26:02Yeah, yeah, you can't. You could.
- 26:05It depends on someone. If you want to stay comfortable,
- 26:07you can stay comfortable. If you want to do something out,
- 26:09do something in your life and you want to explore and just be
- 26:12a go getter to just get it. Because you never know what
- 26:15happens in your life. You know what I mean?
- 26:17I'm the same way too. I cannot be comfortable in one
- 26:20thing and I'll be like okay. I'll stay here.
- 26:22I'll tell, I'll tell my boyfriend.
- 26:24Be like maybe we should start a business.
- 26:27Or maybe we should? Do.
- 26:28Do something this like now like this is like like starting now.
- 26:34We definitely all have our hands in multiple cookie jars.
- 26:39Yeah, you're not, you know, you're not content.
- 26:41We, I think like that is a really great way to segue into
- 26:45also getting comfortable in the sense of like let's enjoy this
- 26:49next piece of the conversation because we're getting some cues
- 26:52that we should. Make a prepared drink for you
- 26:55guys, OK? We still have a lot more to
- 26:58discuss. We still want to pick right back
- 27:01up on where, you know, just like continuing to strike forward,
- 27:05that ambition that keeps you guys going.
- 27:06And we have some awesome festivals that you guys are
- 27:09about to get into. You want to tap in more into
- 27:11your guys as a Mexican American culture?
- 27:13Just added another one too. Oh, OK.
- 27:17OK, we. Want to talk more about that?
- 27:19Yes. So right now we're going to take
- 27:21a little break and then I'll make a drink.
- 27:23For you guys. OK, yes, Awesome.

- 27:59disappointed. Did you already drink it?
- 28:06No. OK, OK.
- 28:07OK. OK.
- 28:07Here's to you. Oh, yeah.
- 28:09So I I don't. I was like planning for to say
- 28:13this for a special occasion. This is a special occasion and
- 28:16we just got back to town. So like that's a big deal.
- 28:20I I'm very picky about who I shared this stuff he know really
- 28:23is. He knows how would me too.
- 28:24Yeah. That's sweet.
- 28:27Oh, yeah. OK, well, you tell us if we're
- 28:28gonna take it now or if we're gonna take it out, then let's
- 28:30take it now. OK.
- 28:31OK. I want you to.
- 28:33I want, I want you guys to talk about how delicious it is.
- 28:35OK, because it is. Cheers.
- 28:37Here's to you. Cheers.
- 28:39Here's you. Here's to this.
- 28:39Here's to you. Yeah, here's to you.
- 28:42Yeah. Oh shit, this is good.
- 28:48That's not bad. Oh my God.
- 28:50Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:53Oh my God, this is so good. It's very strong though, yeah.
- 28:59That's dangerous then 'cause that's how good that was.
- 29:02Like, I would take another shot right now.
- 29:04Yep, Yep, Yep. And it's 47%.
- 29:07So it's like super strong. You could probably set that on
- 29:10fire. You could put.
- 29:13It on the wound, We yelled instantly.
- 29:15And then lick it. And then lick it like a cat with
- 29:19a wound. Well, guys, welcome back again,
- 29:24guys. He knows your APG girl, Emily.
- 29:27And again, let you guys know, we do have a special guest here
- 29:31today. We have the Strada brothers.
- 29:34Hi guys. Hola.
- 29:35So, you know, we had a break and you know, I always make a
- 29:38special drink for our guests and tell me what you guys think.
- 29:43Oh dude, it's amazing. It's perfect.
- 29:45And it was just so happened to go pair and pair perfectly
- 29:49paired with the Gen. I bra.
- 29:50Yeah. Which is like lemongrass orange.
- 29:52So this is like basically a gin mojito and I yeah, the best
- 29:56it's. Yeah, yes, I was going cuz you
- 29:58know, since summer and I was like, you usually use vodka for
- 30:02mojitos. I was like, maybe I should try
- 30:04gin, cuz y'all love gin. No, it's really delicious.
- 30:07It's really chuggable too. So let you guys know, I'm an
- 30:09amateur, so I'm not a professional bartender.
- 30:12She has her doctorate in. I was valedictorian, yeah.
- 30:16Yeah, she was valedictorian of her class for bartending.
- 30:19At Mixology University. Whoa 10.
- 30:21One, so you're not an amateur at all?
- 30:24I mean, I'm. Yeah, Wait a minute.
- 30:27You're right. You're right.
- 30:30You're like I'm an amateur. I literally went to school and
- 30:33got I. Was dressed in class.
- 30:35Yeah. What?
- 30:36Yeah, you can tell. It's really good.
- 30:38Can you guys tell that we're really, really excellent liars?
- 30:42Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're very humble.
- 30:47No, Emily has gotten her doctorate.
- 30:49We have named her valedictorian of the Here's to You class.
- 30:54I got off 20/20/21 actually. When did we start this?
- 31:02We started last year. We did start 2021.
- 31:04Damn. We'll be two years in October.
- 31:06Y'all. Wait, we started.
- 31:07Oh, OK, OK. Where we're going, you'll be
- 31:09what? Two years in October.
- 31:11Wow, Yes. Yeah, two years.
- 31:13Yeah, we're grown-ups. Slowly growing up, but I really
- 31:17believe in you guys. Thank you, thank you.
- 31:18But Speaking of, I don't know if you in one of our episodes with
- 31:22Jocelyn Galicia, we had gin. Nobody warned me that you're not
- 31:27supposed to take a gin shot, so they all laughed at me.
- 31:30We just took another gin shot and that thing was amazing.
- 31:33She took Von Bay type bombing. Oh yeah, I.
- 31:38Don't think. I That's the blue one.
- 31:39The blue bottle one. The blue bottle Oh.
- 31:41OK, everybody watched her and I was like, so no one's gonna tell
- 31:46her. So what?
- 31:47You mean no one? 'S gonna tell her.
- 31:50I'm not gonna tell her. That's what you said I was, and
- 31:52she was across. For me.
- 31:54And she looked at me and I I gave her this look like, don't
- 31:57do it. No.
- 31:58That she did. So why are you not supposed to
- 32:02take a gin shot? Because it's disgusting.
- 32:04Don't do it. You're gonna grow.
- 32:05Up. It's like you take a shot.
- 32:06I'm a scan, I think. I've done that.
- 32:09I must, I must be. I must be a crazy person, though
- 32:12because I mean, I've shot. I've shot C Grahams gin.
- 32:15Like, yeah, that's you know, I didn't know that that you're not
- 32:19supposed to shoot. Like I'm over here like this is
- 32:21delicious. Like OK.
- 32:23No. I think.
- 32:25I think you are a crazy person because of.
- 32:30We're going to get to that in a second.
- 32:31So I was going to say that's the perfect segue when we talk about
- 32:34that it. Is a perfect segue, but if we go
- 32:36that route, we're going to miss other awesome segments.
- 32:38OK, OK. OK, so let's talk about you
- 32:40guys. How did you guys all started?
- 32:43Yeah, so we so our old. Our parents, by the way, are
- 32:47very not musical. And my dad's tone deaf.
- 32:50My dad can't keep time. My mom's tone deaf.
- 32:52Yeah. And so.
- 32:54But our oldest brother, he's 10 years older than I am.
- 32:57Yeah, and nine years old. Eight years older than you, he
- 33:01started playing guitar at church back when he was, you know, in
- 33:05LA and then he also joined the jazz band.
- 33:08He started playing like a little bit of piano.
- 33:11And so when we were growing up, we just kind of wanted to be
- 33:13like him because he was like another father figure.
- 33:16And so we he started teaching me guitar.
- 33:18He started teaching him guitar. And so we kind of followed in
- 33:21his footsteps a little bit. And yeah, we just at school.
- 33:25Like he picked up the trumpet side.
- 33:27Side note, the reason I don't play guitar still is because I
- 33:30have a weird alien finger. What that doesn't?
- 33:34Et finger I. Have like et finger on both
- 33:36hands that like basically has like a small joint compared to
- 33:40what it's supposed to be like. You can bend most fingers like
- 33:43all the way down right? Like there's one finger the this
- 33:46finger that like it only it doesn't bend all the way.
- 33:51So like if you like if I if I were to try to push this hard,
- 33:54it would break what I actually really punched him in the shin.
- 33:57Line. There's no line on it.
- 33:58Yeah, I punched him in the shin when we were kicking.
- 34:01Off of it. That's looking hard.
- 34:06Hey, my Chocolate Trauma Get. Myself together real quick.
- 34:13My chocolate trauma. No, I'm just kidding.
- 34:17So you walk among us. So I'm.
- 34:20All the time among us. Amazing.
- 34:27So I punched him when I was a kid, when we were kids in the
- 34:30shin and like, I actually fractured the one on my right
- 34:32hand. So it bends a little like lower
- 34:35than the other one. Did it hurt?
- 34:37So we need a. Video It hurt him more,
- 34:39basically. Basically, yeah.
- 34:40You just come here, you can take a picture.
- 34:43You really don't have a line or I can do.
- 34:45Oh my God. Guys, we all don't have one look
- 34:47at your hands. We do have one.
- 34:49I'm taking a picture of this like so.
- 34:55He couldn't play guitar. Yeah, my.
- 34:57Brother, there's no line my this finger would block.
- 35:01Pendum This finger would essentially block strings while
- 35:05I try to make a chord. I'd be like, you know, and you
- 35:09couldn't hear the full chord, So my brother goes, oh, that's
- 35:11right, you're alien fingers. And then I stopped taking
- 35:15lessons that day. He broke your heart.
- 35:19Did break your Oh my God, And then we just broke it.
- 35:22Just little did I know that Django Reinhardt had like 2
- 35:24fingers. So, like, I could have.
- 35:26I could have been. Like, I could have, yeah, I
- 35:28could have overcame that, but. Easy.
- 35:31The guitar. And you know what?
- 35:33Stevie Wonder is blind too as well, bro.
- 35:36He's playing. Yeah, he plays the piano.
- 35:39It's OK. Moving on.
- 35:41Did he start off blind or did he become blind after he already
- 35:44played it? Yeah, some of them.
- 35:45Some of them. That's what you're doing,
- 35:48listeners. Google that pull over in your
- 35:50car. Tell us what happened.
- 35:52Yeah. Tell us someone drop it in our
- 35:54comments and tell us yeah cuz. We're not gonna Google check
- 35:56that, right? Are we live right now?
- 35:58Yeah, no, we're not live. Oh.
- 36:02We're recording you to slow down on that trick man.
- 36:05Anyway, Benji continue. Anyway, so yeah, so we I sort
- 36:09of, I kept playing guitar. And then so the church, we were
- 36:12my dad's a preacher and so we grew up playing in church and we
- 36:17had more opportunity to play because we were the only
- 36:20possible musicians in the church.
- 36:21So it was just like, it was like free practice, yeah.
- 36:25Yeah, y'all are cheaper. We were cheaper, yeah.
- 36:27They didn't have to paint them and so but hosts way.
- 36:30He wanted to play the saxophone at school.
- 36:32I did. And so when you when you start
- 36:35band in school in 6th grade, they give you all the like
- 36:37mouthpieces for the horns and they make you go try which
- 36:41whatever you want and if you can make a sound they let you do it
- 36:44and they gave you the trumpet one first.
- 36:47How did that basic? Well, basically my dad, when I
- 36:52was like 7, brought home a plastic stadium trumpet, those
- 36:55Boo Boo Boo Zelas. And I like, I don't were all of
- 36:57us able to play it? I feel like a lot of us were
- 36:59able to make sound on it. Yeah.
- 37:01And I I learned how to do it too.
- 37:03And I would take it to like like concerts or like like to church
- 37:07all the time. And when people would clap, I'd
- 37:08like play the heck out of it. So.
- 37:10So I had that in my muscle memory by the time I was in 6th
- 37:13grade. She gave me all the mouthpieces
- 37:15and I was like, here comes the saxophone read.
- 37:17And I was like, yeah. And then I like, try to play a
- 37:19sound through it and nothing came out, just air.
- 37:22And I was like, I was like panicking.
- 37:24I was like, no, no, no, no. And she's like, try this one.
- 37:26And then she gave me the trumpet mouthpiece and instantly sound
- 37:29came out. And she's like, cool, you're
- 37:31gonna play the trumpet. And I was like.
- 37:33No, Darth Vader. Darth Vader.
- 37:38She's like, I picked your destiny.
- 37:42Like, no guitar, no saxophone. Trumpet.
- 37:46You're a trumpet. You live like a trumpet player.
- 37:50That happened after he played the trumpet.
- 37:53The trumpet played. Him home, He's like, he came
- 37:56home. He's like, I'm fucking playing a
- 37:57trumpet guy. This is fucking bullshit.
- 38:00No, actually, if you ask my parents and my older brothers
- 38:03like, about that, they they were driven up the wall at my
- 38:07trumpet, practicing growing up. Like like every time someone
- 38:11compliments them at a like, no matter how big the concert is,
- 38:13like we just played Bradley Fair.
- 38:15There was, yeah, like maybe 1000 people there.
- 38:17I don't know. There was, there's, there's.
- 38:19A 300 I don't. I don't know, man.
- 38:22Maybe. Maybe a?
- 38:23Lot, yeah. You know, people.
- 38:24Came out there and watch you guys.
- 38:27They were like your son's, you know, so talented and he's like,
- 38:30yeah, he used to drive us crazy practicing.
- 38:32Like they say it every time. Like, yeah, but he's like like
- 38:36Pitchy Cabron was like fucking maybe all headache and
- 38:38everything. Yes, they're probably just like
- 38:43every time that somebody says that to them, they're like
- 38:44instant trauma. Yeah.
- 38:46Yeah. Yeah, they're triggers.
- 38:47You know, they say, you know you're they say good things to
- 38:50your parents and your parents like yeah, they're good, but you
- 38:52don't have no idea how fucking the pain I went through for this
- 38:55whole thing. I feel like they'll stop saying
- 38:57that when I can, like, buy them a house.
- 39:00Like, yeah, if I can ever buy them a house.
- 39:01If you buy a house, it's still not good enough you know from.
- 39:06Experience. I have experience.
- 39:07I bought a house for my parents. It's still not good enough.
- 39:12Damn, we're cursed. We're not, I pick my.
- 39:14Parents Too hard Too. Hard, Yeah.
- 39:17Damn, it's like you go, you go and visit them and then you make
- 39:19time for your friends and they're like, oh, so I'm nothing
- 39:22to you? Yeah.
- 39:23So you. I don't.
- 39:23You don't love me anymore. You don't want me to take, you
- 39:26don't want me to go with you or anything, like pick me up.
- 39:29Pick me up. My, my siblings are married and
- 39:33my dad is always telling my older sister, Oh yeah, well,
- 39:36she's here with her other mom and dad, and now she has a mom
- 39:39and dad over there, so she's always with us.
- 39:42We're like, we're like, dad, get over here.
- 39:45So. Yeah.
- 39:46Oh my God, my parents do the same thing.
- 39:48We're not married. But our older brothers are who
- 39:50are, Yeah, yeah, they're. Like, oh, they have another
- 39:53family go there. Oldest is still married.
- 39:56Yeah, the second oldest is not so.
- 39:59Yeah, but no say oh hey, hey, hey, hey, we're trying to figure
- 40:03it out, but no, that exactly. It's never enough for It's never
- 40:07enough love. Yeah, it's never enough love.
- 40:09You got to give him all of the love, all of the attention 100%
- 40:13of the time, even though you annoy them the fuck out.
- 40:17But they still want it. And you're like you told me to
- 40:19leave and they're like, well, I didn't mean it.
- 40:22And then when they call, you chase me and you see their name
- 40:25on your phone, you're like, okay, let me give myself a
- 40:27minute to kill myself and talk to them.
- 40:30Basically, they're toxic. They're a toxic ex.
- 40:34They did their best, though. My parents are not toxic,
- 40:37they're just. My parents, that's all we can
- 40:42say, but yes. Anyways, about this, So you guys
- 40:44started a band together, cuz you guys your father was a pastor at
- 40:49your church right? Yeah, so we were always playing
- 40:51at church. I was a worship leader for like
- 40:54many, many years and he always played.
- 40:57At church. And so I played drums.
- 40:59They gave us when my oldest brother used to worship lead and
- 41:02then when he went to LA he moved to LA, back to LA He couldn't
- 41:05handle it anymore. Basically the Midwest.
- 41:07I'm just kidding. But I think.
- 41:08I think though I actually think that's what cuz he he grew up
- 41:12hella in LA. Like he.
- 41:15When I was 10, he was like what, twice my age, like almost like.
- 41:18And so him, it was way more culture shock to be in the
- 41:22Midwest for us. We were still young enough we
- 41:24could like learn the ropes. Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 41:27Yeah. And so he moved back.
- 41:28And then when he moved back, Benji here took over the worship
- 41:31leading. And then I switched from trumpet
- 41:33to drums. So that's kind of where I got my
- 41:35a little bit of drum practice in SO.
- 41:38Can you guys also describe how the process is like you know
- 41:42what what type of? You know which siblings gonna
- 41:44play this, do this, do this, do that.
- 41:47Like how do you guys put that all combined together?
- 41:49It was a bit of competition to who was playing the drums.
- 41:52That's because we always wanted to play the drums like both of
- 41:55us. Yeah, it was the cool thing to
- 41:56do, cool thing. And so then we would fight
- 41:58because. You're hitting shit.
- 41:59Yeah, we wanted to hit shit. And so he would always, It would
- 42:05be like, no, it's my turn. No, it's my turn.
- 42:08You already played the. First question, have you guys
- 42:09seen Step Brothers that movie? Exactly like that, but yes, I'm
- 42:15putting my. Ball sack on your.
- 42:17Just a ball sack my drums now. You chip my fucking stick shit.
- 42:28So man, so like did you ever so did you ever lose those fights
- 42:32though Because Benji is younger. Like what Did he ever one up
- 42:35with you just because he got the younger card?
- 42:37So he was like, he's the youngest, so he.
- 42:39Gets to choose. I've always been young, I.
- 42:41Love that younger card shit. I'm tired of that.
- 42:43But hey, but it's real, though it's real.
- 42:46Benji's always been a little more smart.
- 42:49I was gonna say bigger He's. A little.
- 42:51He's a little. More smart, he knew how to work
- 42:55his way into playing longer and stuff.
- 42:58So I'd I'd end up getting the like short end of the rope like.
- 43:02But he Yeah, yeah. And he would also practice more
- 43:06and like watch more, I think. Was YouTube a thing back then?
- 43:10How did you what did you? He was on Vine.
- 43:13There was a point. There was like AOL days.
- 43:17There was a point where Benji pulled away.
- 43:19Talent wise on the drums, like he started playing like really
- 43:22crazy chops and like I was always like.
- 43:24It was definitely at that point it was YouTube.
- 43:27Was that your emo face? Yeah.
- 43:28Well, yeah, that's it. I don't know that because you
- 43:32know. Emo as well, Yeah, the.
- 43:34Correlation. Like you get so emo and you like
- 43:37just like hoard information and you're like, I'm gonna get
- 43:40really good at this. Yeah, you're having like an
- 43:42anime moment. You're like you're having an
- 43:44anime moment. That is it that way actually,
- 43:47that is it. You're having an animal.
- 43:49You're having that main character moment where you're
- 43:51just like, you know what? Fuck this, fuck you, fuck her,
- 43:55fuck your dog. And I'm going to wear my hair
- 43:57how I want to wear my hair. And I don't care what you say.
- 44:01And I don't care. What you think and look at what
- 44:04happened. She.
- 44:06Said fuck everybody. Yeah, I'm still, I joke all the
- 44:09time with my hair stylist. Now we're always like, you know,
- 44:12my gold now in life. At 20, I was about to say my
- 44:15newer age, 27. I'm still 27 now, 27 is that a
- 44:2013 year old will look back at me twice and we'll be like, damn,
- 44:23she's cool. That is my goal, That for 13 and
- 44:2814 year old Fanny to be like damn, she did it.
- 44:32She's doing. I think mission accomplished.
- 44:35I think so too. Yeah, yeah, you got.
- 44:36You got it, Yeah. So.
- 44:40How'd you guys add your so being in the band and everything like
- 44:42that, you focused on more into what again?
- 44:45I'm sorry. So, no.
- 44:46Yeah. So I I focused on drums and
- 44:48guitar, OK. And then?
- 44:51Yeah, and host way focused on on drums.
- 44:53And then in school, he started really focusing on trumpet.
- 44:56Yeah. Because I was going to college
- 44:57for it, I got full ride at friends my first year for for
- 45:00trumpet. Nice.
- 45:01And so I was like OK. She like that shit paid off,
- 45:03huh? Yeah, but thank that teacher.
- 45:07Yeah, yeah, for sure. She's like, fuck this, you sound
- 45:09horrible in that sex. But here's that trumpet though,
- 45:12I'm like. Shout out, shout out to Amanda
- 45:15Amanda at Jardine. I can't remember her new last
- 45:19name. Is it Langston?
- 45:21Yeah, maybe, Yeah. She was Amanda Graham back in
- 45:25the day. And yeah, she yeah, I, yeah, she
- 45:28used to come over into my trumpet book and write down the,
- 45:33like, fingerings, patterns for whatever note was on the page.
- 45:36Because I was, I don't know, I maybe, maybe it was my ADHD,
- 45:39maybe I was just maybe I am dyslexic or something.
- 45:42I don't know. But like, I was having a really
- 45:44hard time. Seeing what's on the page and
- 45:46like playing it, Yeah, yeah. And so yeah, she would do that
- 45:49for me. So that that helped a lot.
- 45:50When I would write music for church, I would write it on a
- 45:52paper in the same format too. Damn.
- 45:55So, like, Fast forward for us. Yeah, you guys were church.
- 45:59Yeah, now you're the Estrada brothers.
- 46:01Yeah, so now, so we basically. But you know, host was played in
- 46:05like every band in Wichita almost.
- 46:08By now. But with Trumpet cuz he can like
- 46:10hop on and like add so much, you know all the time.
- 46:13And so, yeah, and he toured with Kerry Nation and the Speakeasy
- 46:17for many years. And so it kind of got to a point
- 46:19where. We were like, man, we need to
- 46:21like, you need to start your own thing and like let's do our own
- 46:24thing and like and so you kind of just started writing some
- 46:28songs and like we start, you started bringing on some other
- 46:31musicians. Were you?
- 46:32Before I Before we get to that part, I I really want to like,
- 46:35make note that like for a little while, the like, we would only
- 46:39be playing just the two of us at Anna Murdoch.
- 46:43Yeah, Anna Murdoch's with Angelo.
- 46:45A squared shout out to Angelo and his brother Gerard.
- 46:49They had this little spot. Here's to.
- 46:51You. Here's to you.
- 46:51Yeah, here's to you. They had this little spot cat
- 46:53called Anna Murdoch's downtown, and we'd play and it was kind of
- 46:58a struggling operation. You know, like, not a lot of
- 47:01people would come out to these things or to their shop in
- 47:03general. It's kind of a weird location, I
- 47:06think, too. And there wasn't a lot of social
- 47:08media marketing like capabilities back in the day.
- 47:11It was very. Hard to get it up above the
- 47:14ground, but they'd always have there, us there and they'd
- 47:16always feed us. So they took really good care of
- 47:18us and we jam out all the time. And then from there we joined a
- 47:25band called Level Heads and we were in that band together.
- 47:28He was in that band 1st. And then I I just was like, you
- 47:31know, me and him are kind of like if you get one, you got to
- 47:33get the other a lot of times, you know, two for one deal,
- 47:37that's, yeah. We are our experience.
- 47:40Our experience growing up playing in church, like makes
- 47:42this like makes us have this kind of synergistic like, Oh
- 47:46yeah, I mean like you guys were able to just be like, yeah, you
- 47:49know, you were like. We've never played that song
- 47:52like that by the way. That was that was completely
- 47:55unscripted like we that was so cool that like, OK, we're gonna
- 47:58have to get to that part in a second too.
- 48:00Yeah, Yeah. So then, so then level heads
- 48:02happen, and then man, what's the?
- 48:05I think that's when I joined Kerry Nation and then I started
- 48:08touring. I started leaving all the time
- 48:10we start. I went to Europe with them, man.
- 48:13And they I was like a kid when I joined that band and like dude,
- 48:16like honestly I'm glad I could say this on the podcast.
- 48:18Like they they they helped me grow up a lot.
- 48:21Like they they still think I got ways like to go you know to to
- 48:25grow up and like and be better at.
- 48:26But, but like from where I was before to now, like they they
- 48:30taught me a lot of the ropes about being on the road, being
- 48:32responsible, showing up on time, like.
- 48:36Like protocol. When you're at the venue, how do
- 48:38you treat the, how do you treat the people that are hosting you?
- 48:40How do you treat the people that are running sound for you?
- 48:42And like always being grateful, like that's that's how they roll
- 48:45on the road so they run a tight ship.
- 48:47So the all that experience now like, you know, I I basically
- 48:51got to a point where I'm like OK what is the next 10 years going
- 48:53to look like for me? And I was like, dude, I think I
- 48:57need to I need to start my own band and I want to like write my
- 49:01own music. I want to represent.
- 49:02Mess myself more because I I feel like you know first
- 49:05generation like all the struggle we've had my parents like don't
- 49:08have a house like they're still paying rent like they're they're
- 49:11still poor as hell and like I'm like I I kind of want to see how
- 49:14how far I can throw this ball you know like I want I want a
- 49:16chance to throw this ball on my own and see how far I can throw
- 49:19it and and so and and you know I have to have Benji there so and
- 49:24like it's already we already went to Denver and played just
- 49:27the both of us and all the people there like it was very
- 49:30last minute we actually got stranded.
- 49:32Yeah, it's really crazy how it ended up happening.
- 49:33But my friend who I met through Cary Nation in Wisconsin moved
- 49:37to Denver and was like, dude, I'll set up a show last second
- 49:40for you guys and he set it up. They called all their friends.
- 49:43One of the guys, Howard, we just met Howard, shout out to Howard,
- 49:48went and grabbed people from other bars and told them we were
- 49:50playing and like we had a nice little crowd.
- 49:52That's. Awesome.
- 49:53And and then we just did our thing and like, and I was like,
- 49:56I've, you know, there's a moment where I was like, man.
- 49:58I've been missing this. I've been missing this
- 50:00connection that we've had growing up at church like this
- 50:02connection we have as brothers musically I it's a lot more
- 50:06feels more like you know it feels right you know and so so
- 50:11that's kind of I don't know where am I missing the blanks
- 50:14now. No, that's like, I mean, yeah,
- 50:16we both. Other than those bands, we've
- 50:18been in a lot of bands like I I was in Keo and them for many
- 50:21years. Like I kind of joined when they
- 50:24were first starting out and I was with her for.
- 50:27A few years. So we've both had like band
- 50:29experiences and stuff. And yeah, I think we were both
- 50:32at the right point here. Recently like was like 3 years.
- 50:35Now that you've started your band, maybe two years.
- 50:37Yeah, I think three years, Yeah. During started during the
- 50:40pandemic, yeah. It always feels like 5 or 10 and
- 50:43then zero years, yeah. Yeah, but it's never in between,
- 50:47Nothing in between. So is everything you guys play
- 50:50is like original? Like y'all wrote it yourself.
- 50:54How do you adapt to your own style?
- 50:56So I I have a lot of voice memos.
- 51:00I'm one of those guys that has voice.
- 51:01Memos, I hear, you know, I've heard some stories about, like
- 51:03some artists, like even Ed Sheeran, I've heard.
- 51:06Not that I like, I'm not a huge fan of his music, but I don't
- 51:09hate it. But it's like he was talking
- 51:11about how he makes voice memos When he hits this, like, idea
- 51:14will come to him when he's like not really paying attention
- 51:17there. That's kind of how I am.
- 51:18I come. I'm just like kind of vibing.
- 51:20Well, I think one time I wrote the like.
- 51:22I wrote this like intro for our Bradley Fair concert.
- 51:25I was like at a party, my friend Cody Lonergan's party at his
- 51:29parents house and I was odd fellow shout out to odd fellow
- 51:33there, I'll get to that in a minute.
- 51:37I was literally waiting in line to get like a cupcake or a piece
- 51:40of cake or something and I was just standing in line like and I
- 51:45was like oh shit, that's tight OK, voice memo.
- 51:48And I was like. And I was like and then the
- 51:53horns are gonna come in like and then like I like brought it and
- 52:02then I'll go to a piano after and I'll be like, OK and I'll
- 52:07figure it out. And then usually I like to call
- 52:09Benji cuz he has more of like. My brain.
- 52:12In him, you know, we share kind of a third brain.
- 52:16And it's like the cloud. It's like we have the cloud.
- 52:20We have a shared cloud, shared cloud, yeah, yeah.
- 52:24And he's usually you know he'll he'll help me like pick it apart
- 52:27because I don't play a chordal instrument but I know what I
- 52:30want to hear and and I so I'll have it.
- 52:34I'll bring it to him and he'll he'll start playing chords.
- 52:36I'm like no, I need this note in there.
- 52:37No, not that note. And then he'll cut.
- 52:40Start messing around and he has experience playing piano from
- 52:42church so and and and also trying to follow dad.
- 52:46Dad would, Dad would literally, yeah that's so fun at church.
- 52:49Dad would start singing at the end of like a preaching and he
- 52:52would just start singing a song like without him starting the
- 52:56piano or anything. He was just like like right now
- 52:59if I just started singing and and Benji would have to figure
- 53:01out what chords are behind it on the piano.
- 53:04So I got really good at like in two like 2 seconds I already
- 53:07found the the home chord. Figure out the rest of the song
- 53:11based on like context clues, even if I don't know it.
- 53:14So then I was just like and there, but they're usually the
- 53:17same, you know, like old hymns and stuff.
- 53:19But so yeah, so super impressive like that.
- 53:22Is impressive. There's no way I could like make
- 53:25something up in my. I mean like I need like 10/15
- 53:27business days. I thought you were gonna say
- 53:30minutes. I was like, no.
- 53:31I need like 10:15. Because you're still gonna drink
- 53:34on the weekend. Yeah, like, I gotta put this in
- 53:37chat. Cheap ET hold on.
- 53:38Hold on, hold on, What do I do? Fun aside yeah, Google the the
- 53:46Google app has this ability to. You can sing a song to it and
- 53:51it'll try to guess what it is. So I have perfect pitch.
- 53:54So like, it's like kind of like photographic memory.
- 53:56For years, yeah. The other day I was just like
- 54:01singing. I could do any song, but like, I
- 54:04love it because I don't think, I don't know, like does it work
- 54:07with people? Maybe it doesn't work.
- 54:09Singing it cuz. So basically what it means is
- 54:11like, I can sing the song in the original key, in the original
- 54:14notes. Most people will sing the same
- 54:17pattern. Like if I ask you to sing, Sweet
- 54:20Caroline, Like, go ahead sing it, you know, I'm sure I don't
- 54:23know the song, Sweet Carolina. What's the rest of it?
- 54:27No, that's right, sweet Carolina.
- 54:30No, no, no. The.
- 54:31The. That's not the sweet.
- 54:37We're older enough. We're we're sick.
- 54:40We're in the same cloud. That's right.
- 54:42We've got a cloud too. Benji and I were into the cloud.
- 54:44Sorry, What's that? What's that?
- 54:48No, no. I'm doing Sweet Caroline,
- 54:49please. Love you.
- 54:51Yeah, yeah, exactly what's? That I'm gonna do this.
- 54:54All right, Hold on. Hold on.
- 54:56I never had nobody's do me. All the things that you can do
- 54:58me in a special way. I feel when you're home.
- 55:00And we don't always be together. Baby, that's what you told me.
- 55:02And I believe it, OK? Because I never had nobody.
- 55:05Do me like you. Emily's face right now is just.
- 55:09I'm gonna need her to shut the hell.
- 55:12Up. I'm gonna cleanse that palate.
- 55:13Thank you. I'm gonna cleanse that palate
- 55:15right now. So thank you.
- 55:16Caroline. Papa.
- 55:19Right. Dangler's ads.
- 55:22No, no ads. That's sweet Caroline Papa.
- 55:29That's that's what. He's saying that's what the key
- 55:30is. That's what I hear.
- 55:31Let's. See if it, if it's.
- 55:33Also side note, as I'm getting older, it's starting to kind of
- 55:35like like go off by just like $0.50, I'll be like off in exact
- 55:42half step every time now sometimes.
- 55:44But it's it's like weird, it's like and then you can Google it.
- 55:46It's a thing. It's real half thing that's
- 55:48happening to everyone. Our brother used to test him.
- 55:51Our oldest brother that played guitar, he would be like.
- 55:54He'd like bring him to a piano when he was like, I don't know,
- 55:56five or something and be like sing sing C and he'd be like C
- 56:02or whatever. Yeah.
- 56:02And. Then he'd play it on the piano.
- 56:04He'd be like, what? You got it?
- 56:06And then, like and so he like, discovered.
- 56:08That he had. Perfect.
- 56:09So here we go. Here, let's try it as I speak.
- 56:13Caroline. Papa, you can rewind in the
- 56:15podcast too if you want to check me.
- 56:21OK. Yeah, I'm on.
- 56:22I'm on it. OK, yeah, here we go.
- 56:28Yeah. That's what I was thinking
- 56:31Caroline. So it's like spot on right.
- 56:36So like there's I have the like exact pitch he has like relative
- 56:41so that but it's it's he has really good ears too.
- 56:43So yeah we when we have to figure stuff out especially on
- 56:47the spot there's a lot of room for improvisation.
- 56:49I'll think of something and I'll just do it.
- 56:51And usually he. He catches it with me.
- 56:52There are times where I'm playing drums and he's playing
- 56:55guitar and I'll do a certain rhythm that I just decide to do
- 56:58on like the on the whim. And he catches it and I'm like,
- 57:01and I'm like having so much fun, cuz it's like, it's like having
- 57:04like you guys are in the moment. It's like if me and you just
- 57:07right now just started saying the exact words at the same
- 57:10time, at the same time it just and try to catch me.
- 57:14It's like we're. Finishing each other.
- 57:16'S sentences. That's pretty late.
- 57:25Sorry. Bring it back.
- 57:25Bring it back. Are where we at with this?
- 57:28No. So we were asking how you guys,
- 57:31you know, figure out how to come up with an original song and how
- 57:34you guys adapted to your own style.
- 57:36I think, like, we were also going to mention just the song
- 57:39that you guys just played. You were talking about how you
- 57:41guys improped that. Like we saw Benji just like
- 57:44start to drum up his own thing. And then you guys were recording
- 57:48that. We saw you while you were
- 57:50playing sing the song, you were doing your own thing with the
- 57:53trumpet and you're like, alright, I'm gonna record that.
- 57:55I'm gonna bring it back later. Like, you know, can you kind of
- 57:57just talk through that a little bit?
- 58:00Universe. Yeah so the the song we it's
- 58:02kind of written out and we have a way we play it with the
- 58:05musicians and in his band but it's we have so much experience
- 58:11playing just us. Like I can turn any song
- 58:14acoustic, so just like break it down like do some drums on the
- 58:18by tapping and then. I know the chords, so I'll just
- 58:21play them. And yeah, it's just, it's kind
- 58:25of like muscle memory now. We just like have a way that we
- 58:27play songs together, even if we don't know how we're going to
- 58:29play them. We just like, go into it.
- 58:32We go kind of go in the same direction, yeah, yeah.
- 58:34But also the band members that I usually try to ask to play with
- 58:38us are I always make sure that they're musicians that can can
- 58:42usually play jazz, you know, because jazz involves a lot of
- 58:45improvisation, so. It's basically I I I kind of
- 58:50curate the people that I play with in the band specifically to
- 58:54to to where they can kind of hang with what we're doing and
- 58:59can kind of go into different areas too.
- 59:01And you know, a lot of times a lot of the songs like this, I
- 59:04think you might be interested. I think this is kind of what you
- 59:06were asking. I think is I kind of write a lot
- 59:08of the bassline rhythms on the drums, the the the where, where
- 59:12the song ends, where the song starts, who's going to take a
- 59:14solo where. I kind of curate that a lot
- 59:16myself. I have a very strong vision for
- 59:19what I want as far as this band goes.
- 59:22I mean it's the host way of strata band like.
- 59:24Is everybody else vocal in the band too as well or is it just
- 59:27you seen band? Oh, it's just host way.
- 59:32Yeah, if they sing, it'd probably be like some harmonies
- 59:34and stuff, you know? I always felt weird about
- 59:38calling it the Host Way strata band because I was like, dude.
- 59:40This is all of us. It's you know, I was like, how
- 59:43dare like these? Jazz artists often like, it's
- 59:46like the whatever, whatever quartet, the James Brown quartet
- 59:51or something, you know, and it's like, there's more musicians,
- 59:52what are you doing? And then like, I realized at
- 59:55this point I've had so many bands break up.
- 59:57I was in crisis. Casanova level heads broke up
- 1:00:00like so Odyssey. I was in Odyssey.
- 1:00:04I have. I can give you a laundry list of
- 1:00:06how many bands I've like, been an official member of and and
- 1:00:10when it when it when the band breaks up.
- 1:00:12You can't just like, replace a member.
- 1:00:15And call it the same band anymore a lot of times and so
- 1:00:18cuz people expect a certain lineup now.
- 1:00:20So I was like how do I make a project where it can keep going
- 1:00:24forever. How can I like make a band where
- 1:00:26if someone decides to do their own thing or like you know they
- 1:00:29don't want to play with us anymore or I need a sub at the
- 1:00:32last second that I can just find someone to come and play like I
- 1:00:35was. Like I have to call it the host
- 1:00:36vysrada band. Like it has to be self named and
- 1:00:39and also I want to write. I'm gonna do most of the
- 1:00:41writing. Yeah yeah and so it kind of
- 1:00:43just, I was like I used to talk so much shit on it and now I'm
- 1:00:46doing it. It's like, but I'm at a point
- 1:00:48where it kind of makes sense. It's like the only option though
- 1:00:51to survive for it to go on forever.
- 1:00:53So. Beautiful.
- 1:00:54Beautiful. Well, that's good.
- 1:00:55That's, I like the way how you put that all together and
- 1:00:58everything. So also since the summer right
- 1:01:02now you guys are having events coming up, correct?
- 1:01:05Yes. So we know that there's a event
- 1:01:08called Summer Soul Fest? Absolutely.
- 1:01:11Can you tell us some about it? Yeah.
- 1:01:14Tell us about why you're involved.
- 1:01:16So all that good stuff. So, OK, so our coffee house,
- 1:01:21Angelo Anna Murdoch's, they own our coffee house now.
- 1:01:24We played there for several years.
- 1:01:26He always was, you know down to have us play.
- 1:01:29We did so many events there. I think during Pandemic, he let
- 1:01:33us play on the porch. After that, I met Cody Lonergan.
- 1:01:37We used to do a lot of shows at Peerless kind of before all the
- 1:01:41big drama, yeah. Yeah, before it became not the
- 1:01:44spot. Exactly.
- 1:01:47Don't cancel me Wichita. So Cody Cody Lonergan was a big
- 1:01:56part of what made Peerless blow up.
- 1:01:58He he did a lot of work and he always picked the right people
- 1:02:01for bartending and to to kind of make this the place that it
- 1:02:04became and when they kind of all fell apart I followed him I was
- 1:02:09like dude I'll I'll do whatever you do next I'll I'm there to
- 1:02:12support like I love your energy I love working with you.
- 1:02:15He was one of the not I'm this isn't to to dig on anybody but
- 1:02:18like he was one of the first playing for him was one of the
- 1:02:21first times I was in a band that actually got paid like.
- 1:02:24And it was not like we got paid a whole lot.
- 1:02:26But it was kind of my own fault to like I didn't I wasn't aware
- 1:02:30of like being able to like charge a venue and like this is
- 1:02:32my rate but also just like part of that also comes with like are
- 1:02:37you promoting yourself are you bringing people out.
- 1:02:38That's when you can actually ask the venue for money.
- 1:02:40There was a lot of things that I hadn't learned yet but but he
- 1:02:43was one of the first people that like was like all right I'm
- 1:02:45we're going to book you. I'm going to pay you this much
- 1:02:48and like and so it was always really good working with him and
- 1:02:53we had a good strong bond, a lot of trust and he then moved on to
- 1:02:57odd fellow Hall and brought on Jimmy Vo there and they were
- 1:03:01just like a powerhouse like just like making really cool events
- 1:03:05in this ballroom and like they're booking.
- 1:03:06It's pretty cool. Yeah too as well.
- 1:03:08I really, I've been there for the first time.
- 1:03:11I think Dusty's cousin, right? Dusty, your cousin had like any
- 1:03:15popup event. That was my first time going
- 1:03:17there and I was like, wow, this little venue is pretty cool.
- 1:03:20Yeah, I like it. They do a lot of weddings there.
- 1:03:22Yeah. And it's like very different
- 1:03:24atmospheres. You feel like you're not in
- 1:03:25Wichita, to be honest. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:27I feel like you're not wooden floor chandeliers like a really
- 1:03:30fancy cocktail bar in house, chefs making curating a menu for
- 1:03:36every event. Yeah, no matter what it is,
- 1:03:38whether it's a wedding, whether it's a rock show, whether it's a
- 1:03:40Cuban bass player or yeah, Puerto Rican bass player, I
- 1:03:44think is what we had. And it's just they're just
- 1:03:48really love music. So they'll do whatever it takes
- 1:03:50to put on a good show and they'll take care of the
- 1:03:52artists. And so it's been really fun
- 1:03:55working with them. But he So him and I are putting
- 1:03:59together a festival. Yeah, we're bringing making
- 1:04:04movies from Kansas City, the the lead singers from Panama and we
- 1:04:09got my band, we got Tumbao, the Salsa Band.
- 1:04:12Oh my God. So I'm so sad that I'm not going
- 1:04:15to be here for them, though I'll be in Mexico.
- 1:04:17Tell all your friends though, you know.
- 1:04:18I will. I will.
- 1:04:19I'll come. Yeah, you.
- 1:04:20Guys. Go Yeah.
- 1:04:22I like that band of law, yeah. And then before that they're
- 1:04:26gonna have Daydream like a 10, usually 10 or 12 piece, like
- 1:04:30kind of modern jazz, like big band kind of.
- 1:04:33Thing That's exciting. Like they do funk songs, you
- 1:04:36know, like don't, don't, don't. But like the horns, dude.
- 1:04:39Seriously, it's like a really good band.
- 1:04:41And then you got Santiago and KC Abbay opening up the the event.
- 1:04:46It starts at 2, ends at 11 food trucks, bouncy houses.
- 1:04:50Like it's it's a really pretty pretty venue.
- 1:04:52It's. Me having a bouncy house.
- 1:04:54In. That so dance.
- 1:04:55Family event, Family event, All ages, Food.
- 1:04:58Yep. Dancing again.
- 1:05:00Drinks. Yep, Yep, Food.
- 1:05:02There's there's VIP tickets for 100 bucks.
- 1:05:05So how does people if like other listeners, how do they get
- 1:05:08involved and purchase tickets to go to this event?
- 1:05:11Odd Hell Odd Hello Odd Hell no. Odd fellowhall.com/events Yeah
- 1:05:19and then. So there's options like buying
- 1:05:21like general tickets and then VIP or anything like that.
- 1:05:24The VIP you can get indoor access.
- 1:05:26There's like this like a cool barn looking thing.
- 1:05:29They're gonna have like a a buffet cooked by the chefs from
- 1:05:33odd fellow. They're gonna have their own
- 1:05:35bar. They're gonna have like in, in
- 1:05:37in indoor bathrooms. Yeah, cuz it's it's an outdoor
- 1:05:41show right now. It's hidden like venue.
- 1:05:44Hidden like venue. Yep.
- 1:05:45Yeah, yeah. Exciting July, July 22nd, July
- 1:05:4822nd, July 22nd. July 22nd, July 22nd, July 22nd,
- 1:05:52July 22nd. July 22nd, July 22nd you have
- 1:05:55to. Say 7 times.
- 1:05:56Yeah, yeah, you have to say it 7 * 7 times for its sake.
- 1:05:59I've said that so many times at work and every and now people
- 1:06:01just repeat me and they'll be like Fanny always says, you have
- 1:06:04to say it seven times. You have to say it or you have
- 1:06:06to even. About it or you have to see it
- 1:06:08seven different ways, seven different times, and hear it for
- 1:06:12you for it to stick. Odd fellow Hall.
- 1:06:15So another thing to add to that. I've also been working closely
- 1:06:19with a local flavor restaurant. Shout out to Jeremy Snyder and
- 1:06:23his wife, Marisol. Here's to you.
- 1:06:25Yeah. Here's to you, Dan.
- 1:06:27They've they've kind of taken me in like family.
- 1:06:29They they put a picture of me on what they call the Spicy Wall,
- 1:06:34and there's. Ohh, that's fun.
- 1:06:35There's a bunch of hot sauces. Cuz you're the hot sauce king.
- 1:06:38Which hot sauce King of sauce is it?
- 1:06:39I don't know what. Which hot sauce are you?
- 1:06:42Which hot sauce am I? He's Tapatio.
- 1:06:45On Tapatio, yeah, yeah. He's on the He's on the front on
- 1:06:50Tapatio. If there was like a one grade
- 1:06:52hotter Tapatio than what you can buy at the store.
- 1:06:55Oh, Shay. OK Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's
- 1:06:56pretty hot. Keep going.
- 1:06:59So there's like a yeah there's pictures of Peppers on the wall
- 1:07:01and they put me in the middle. These guys, these guys have
- 1:07:03taken me in like family and and I've been helping them like book
- 1:07:08for their restaurant and and because you know, I I have a
- 1:07:12very specific taste in music. You know I like people that can
- 1:07:15play jazz, but I want I want people that can play jazz to
- 1:07:18play what they want to play. So I've been telling a lot of
- 1:07:21these people that I booked like, hey, you don't have to play
- 1:07:23standards like jazz standards in this bar like and at this
- 1:07:26restaurant like you can play whatever you want, like be free,
- 1:07:29go fly, like play. I know you have other tastes in
- 1:07:32music, but you are good at jazz. So just like do what you wish
- 1:07:36you could play. Don't feel like you have to do
- 1:07:37this cuz like you know, it's been, it's been done before.
- 1:07:41And and local flavor is all about like original music.
- 1:07:44They have, like, vinyls on the walls, you know, Jeremy's a big
- 1:07:46connoisseur. So these guys are actually gonna
- 1:07:50be cooking at the festival. They're gonna have, I don't know
- 1:07:54what their menu is actually, but they're gonna be really amazing.
- 1:07:57They're gonna be making smoked. They have a big smoker out in
- 1:08:00their restaurant and they're like experts at smoking.
- 1:08:03Actually, I don't know if we mentioned my dad cuts trees also
- 1:08:07like we. I need some tree cutting.
- 1:08:09We hit me up, I will me up. We provide the firewood for that
- 1:08:14restaurant. Cool.
- 1:08:16So that's kind of all full circle.
- 1:08:18So yeah, we're all kind of collaborating on this big
- 1:08:20festival and we hope everyone has a good time.
- 1:08:24So man, okay, when is it again? July 22nd July 22nd July 22nd,
- 1:08:29July 22nd July 22nd July 22nd July 22nd at.
- 1:08:33Fellow Hall at fellow. Hall.com dot com slash events.
- 1:08:38Slash events starts at 2:00 PM, ends at 11.
- 1:08:41Yep, bouncy houses. Bouncy houses, $2525 General
- 1:08:45admission. I think this week we're going to
- 1:08:48do a promotion for the parking passes.
- 1:08:50You can If you get your ticket now you can.
- 1:08:53You don't have to pay for parking.
- 1:08:54You get a free parking pass. Otherwise you have to carpool.
- 1:08:57Well, I we recommend carpooling. Parking passes are 10 bucks.
- 1:09:00But you can like I think it'd be.
- 1:09:02I think it'd be fun like hey, like let's meet here 1st and
- 1:09:05we're all going to carpool. Like I love carpooling with
- 1:09:07friends. It's like it's always a vibe.
- 1:09:11We want to, we definitely want to switch segments a little bit
- 1:09:14over from Summer Soul Fest. I'm sad that I won't be there,
- 1:09:18but I know that the rest of the crew will make in.
- 1:09:19That's going to be super fun. But one thing that we definitely
- 1:09:23don't want to overlook, even though we touched on it a little
- 1:09:25bit, so we'll probably just pick one question.
- 1:09:28But when I asked you guys like what were some of the segments
- 1:09:31you wanted to talk about? You wanted to talk about just
- 1:09:34how you guys grew up in terms of like your parents being Mexican,
- 1:09:38American immigrants, you guys being first generation.
- 1:09:43So can you tell us a little bit about your parents experiences
- 1:09:46as immigrants and how that shaped up your own upbringing
- 1:09:50and your own journey? Any lessons or values that you
- 1:09:54got from there? I just want to say one thing
- 1:09:56very quick about that. Like I, I, I, me and Benji and
- 1:10:02all of our brothers, we speak really good English.
- 1:10:04Do you do you feel like I have an accent?
- 1:10:06I guess I'll be listening to this podcast later.
- 1:10:08Like listening. Listening for your accent?
- 1:10:10Yeah, I feel like we speak. We speak English so well that
- 1:10:12even I forget sometimes. Like, I'm first generation dude.
- 1:10:15Like I'm not. I'm not like a typical first
- 1:10:17Gen. like, I like my mom took really special care.
- 1:10:21She used to read to us when we were younger.
- 1:10:23In English and in English. And Spanish and.
- 1:10:28But there's a lot of things where I'm like, man, I think
- 1:10:31we're doing pretty well for being first Gen. like we're
- 1:10:33working pretty hard at this. And also especially in terms of
- 1:10:38like our kind of popularity and influence in in the scenes that
- 1:10:44we are part of, like, especially my brother Pablo, he's Pablo
- 1:10:47Cruz. Publicly, there's multiple
- 1:10:51reasons I don't want to get into it, but our full name is like,
- 1:10:53my name is Jose Estrada Cruz. Yeah, that's my mom's maiden
- 1:10:56name. In Mexico.
- 1:10:57You keep both. Parents.
- 1:10:58Yeah, I'm funny. Or Choa Castro.
- 1:11:00Nice. Hell yeah.
- 1:11:01So I kept mine too. But like, Paul has become kind
- 1:11:04of a public figure. Pablo Cruz, by the way, has
- 1:11:07helped us a lot in our latest promotion.
- 1:11:09He's like, we're all the Strada brothers are teaming up this
- 1:11:11year. Yeah we're really we're really
- 1:11:15doubling down and like he has so many resources and abilities and
- 1:11:18skills and that he's like finally like dude, I wanna help
- 1:11:21you guys like move your music forward.
- 1:11:23So but he so his his reach is crazy like he's become kind of a
- 1:11:27celebrity. He used to be in a he used to
- 1:11:31have his own Mexican channel or no show, El Savour Latino on a
- 1:11:39Azteca America. He used to be the the host on
- 1:11:43that. And then after that he became a
- 1:11:45PD. He became kind of a spokesperson
- 1:11:47for PD. He would like, do the press, the
- 1:11:50press conference, press releases to the Hispanic news station.
- 1:11:54He would show up to the radio station once a week and give all
- 1:11:57the police news to the Hispanic community.
- 1:12:01Just like really powerful in the community.
- 1:12:04And just like I'm like, dude, there's a lot, there's so much
- 1:12:07drive in this, like anywhere, anywhere you look either of the
- 1:12:11brothers. We're so passionate about what
- 1:12:13we do and we want to kind of like not just do it for
- 1:12:16ourselves, we want to contribute to the overall thing as as we're
- 1:12:19trying to help ourselves. You know, get out of the the,
- 1:12:22the rut. You know what?
- 1:12:23I mean, but yeah, I mean that all comes from our parents.
- 1:12:25I mean, my dad moved here when he was like, I want to say like
- 1:12:2813 years old or something from Mexico.
- 1:12:30He moved to LA Oh, wow. So he was like a young.
- 1:12:33He was an adolescent in the US. For working.
- 1:12:36Yeah, working by himself. Stories like that, my uncle like
- 1:12:39it's. I always find that's so crazy
- 1:12:41because it's like I can never imagine.
- 1:12:42Sorry. No, no, no, you.
- 1:12:44I know, yeah, it's super crazy. Like he tells us stories about,
- 1:12:47you know, living in a house with like 15 other guys, like older
- 1:12:51guys, and just like all the horror stories of.
- 1:12:54That come with that but no he you know he's he's always been
- 1:12:57really passionate always like of like any immigrant parent just
- 1:13:00like always working to to get a better life and and.
- 1:13:04They want to come here for the American dream.
- 1:13:06They do. Yeah, It's still very true
- 1:13:09thing, but also like when you consider the conditions that
- 1:13:12you're in, in Mexico, yeah, it is something that and again it
- 1:13:16comes a lot from like just this ambition of wanting to to
- 1:13:19provide for others. Yeah, a lot of it always sums
- 1:13:21for me like you want to provide for your family, but at the same
- 1:13:24time it is like. The currency there's different
- 1:13:26to here. Yeah, like you just have more
- 1:13:28opportunities. But it's like, even if the
- 1:13:31American dream, like now as Americans, you've been here,
- 1:13:33you've lived it, you're seeing other things that are definitely
- 1:13:36hostile to this environment. My mom has showed us or showed
- 1:13:39me like pictures of what her house might have looked like.
- 1:13:43Because there's, you know, you can ever find an actual picture.
- 1:13:45Actually, she showed me a picture.
- 1:13:47This is like kind of like these like black panels.
- 1:13:52Laminas, Negras. Oh yeah, kind of aluminum that
- 1:13:56they. It's a shed.
- 1:13:57It was a. It's a shed.
- 1:13:58Yeah, that's a great. That's a great thing.
- 1:14:00Basically lived in a shed, like now you look at where that house
- 1:14:03was and it it got, you know, it. They have an actual house where
- 1:14:07that that shed used to be. Yeah.
- 1:14:09But that's just back when people used to build their own, their
- 1:14:11own things. And and we've been to my mom's
- 1:14:13Pueblo, I think I went, we went in when I was in high school and
- 1:14:17the house that they were in, it was like a decent kind of like
- 1:14:21cement house. No air conditioning.
- 1:14:25The shower didn't have any pressure.
- 1:14:27It was just water coming from the roof.
- 1:14:30Yes, and it would just leak out of the faucet and it was cold.
- 1:14:34Yeah, and you had to pick the right time of the day.
- 1:14:36That take a shower. You don't shower.
- 1:14:38Yeah, yeah, you don't shower after.
- 1:14:41It was so like 6:00 PM It was so sad.
- 1:14:44Like, you know and like. And if you want hot water, they
- 1:14:46fucking boil it for you, yeah, you just.
- 1:14:49Or to mix the cold water with it and stir.
- 1:14:51It or if you're if you're also so Emily's from us and then yeah
- 1:14:55similar conditions so. Same thing too, as well, because
- 1:14:57my grandparents, they live when they lived in a shed as well.
- 1:15:01Like I'm like a shaft. Dang.
- 1:15:02Yeah, yeah, literally. And we still have that shack and
- 1:15:05yeah we still have it and we build a house right next to it
- 1:15:09because my grandpa's is like I was I made this myself for my
- 1:15:13family and I raised five of my kids in here.
- 1:15:16He's like I want to keep this. So we still have it and we use
- 1:15:19it as like a kitchen area. So basically like still at like
- 1:15:23at my grandparents in Laos, like we still do out houses and all
- 1:15:28that stuff. Like it's it has I.
- 1:15:32I've been through all that too as well.
- 1:15:33I'd so done it. Yeah.
- 1:15:35Like while we call out the struggle at the end of the day,
- 1:15:38like, you hit on some really good stuff there.
- 1:15:40Like, they built that. Yeah.
- 1:15:42So, like when you go, Yeah. So when you go and you visit
- 1:15:45these locations and you realize like how much more fortunate you
- 1:15:48are here, you're still at the same time you witness all of the
- 1:15:52like. What they went through.
- 1:15:55Well, not even that. But I was going to just talk
- 1:15:57about the pride that they have that.
- 1:16:00The end the happiness that they have, like with such little
- 1:16:03things, how happy they are and how proud they are of all that
- 1:16:08hard work. Yeah.
- 1:16:09You know, like if somebody easily, easily could look down
- 1:16:12and say like, oh, that's crap, that's how you vacation.
- 1:16:14And it's like no. Dude, no.
- 1:16:15Like you don't. Understand all of these
- 1:16:18hardships that went into it that now just like, really ingrained
- 1:16:23me. And still, and you know what?
- 1:16:25And still to this day, my my family back in Laos still do it.
- 1:16:29Why they still do it and but like you know, with my my
- 1:16:35parents, you know that they worked hard over here.
- 1:16:37You know, they send money and build houses over there for
- 1:16:39their family. You know, because they're that's
- 1:16:41why they came here. They're like, I want to make
- 1:16:42money. I want to because.
- 1:16:44Who's who I. Want to come over here?
- 1:16:46I mean like you're making you're making $0.10 for like fucking
- 1:16:50for 8 hours, but you can make. 15.
- 1:16:52Dollars $4.00 in like a whole month in Mexico, like that's
- 1:16:57what it is. You make $50 in a month.
- 1:17:00And then when you go and then when you go back, when you go
- 1:17:03back to your country, like you know they think you are rich,
- 1:17:07you know, But like they're and you're not, you know you're.
- 1:17:10Yeah, you're so, so poor. It's so funny how that works,
- 1:17:13right? Because at the same time like
- 1:17:15here. You have other shit.
- 1:17:17I think we'll easily go on a tangent, but let's come back
- 1:17:20real quick. So yeah, if you could, yeah,
- 1:17:22Yeah. My dad, when he moved here, you
- 1:17:24know, he did that. He just basically he's like the
- 1:17:27number 12 out of 14 kids and his family.
- 1:17:31Yeah, he like moved here. He kind of like took the, he
- 1:17:35took the initiative, you know, he's got that drive, you know
- 1:17:37and so yeah, no big ass, you say.
- 1:17:40God damn. They used to make her kids, bro.
- 1:17:45My friend has nine siblings and I think that's a lot.
- 1:17:49But 14? My dad has 10.
- 1:17:51Anyways, yeah, she told 999. Yeah, yeah 'cause my dad's the
- 1:17:5410th. Yeah, yeah, They used to make
- 1:17:56fun of my grandma when she got married to my grandpa, 'cause
- 1:17:58she was super tiny, small and tiny and thin.
- 1:18:01And they were like, you're not gonna have any kids.
- 1:18:03And she proved them wrong. 14 kids on his teeny.
- 1:18:07Ass. Yeah.
- 1:18:08Yeah, a whole. Yeah.
- 1:18:09Hey, props. Props are your dad.
- 1:18:11Yeah, Literally. Yeah.
- 1:18:12Basically pop star you guys, you guys went through all that and
- 1:18:15everything and you guys are building yourself up.
- 1:18:17You guys are building a legacy and everything, bringing
- 1:18:19everybody what you love and you want to share it to everybody
- 1:18:22here in the world. Well, last thing that happened
- 1:18:24too was like Dad worked trees his whole life.
- 1:18:27Even when he moved to, every time he moved to the Midwest, he
- 1:18:30couldn't do like, landscaping. There's no Beverly Hills houses
- 1:18:33that'll pay him his. Like, oh, but no, We got no, we
- 1:18:35got no Beverly Hills houses here, so he had to switch to
- 1:18:38tree jobs. He had a Coke.
- 1:18:42Big Ass Land. Only one family.
- 1:18:45That'd probably be more lawn mowing and like, you know,
- 1:18:48because there's Kansas, Kansas, wide open acres, you know what I
- 1:18:51mean? Like you know, yeah so so anyway
- 1:18:55he switched to tree work and like maybe like 2A year ago he
- 1:19:00had a stroke and and it was so sad because it's like dude like
- 1:19:06like he actually still goes back to he recovered.
- 1:19:09He's doing really well but he he still goes back to to cut trees
- 1:19:13every now and then and like Benji kind of took the the, the
- 1:19:16spearhead of the operation of the tree business.
- 1:19:19And so like as we speak we're actively like in that struggle
- 1:19:23like just like trying to work hard and like kind of like put
- 1:19:26all our we can into the music and like you know when we play
- 1:19:29there's that's where all the energy is coming from is like
- 1:19:31it's like, yeah. I spent 8 hours today like doing
- 1:19:35work outside. You know what I mean?
- 1:19:36Like. Well, you know what?
- 1:19:37Like you you thank. You seriously thank.
- 1:19:41You, your parents, build a legacy and you guys as as to
- 1:19:45hurt their kids, to want to continue that legacy for them,
- 1:19:47then you want to prove it for them too as well.
- 1:19:49Yeah, that's how we what what are we here for?
- 1:19:52Just improve for our parents. That's it.
- 1:19:54That's right. That's right.
- 1:19:55No, but it's. You know, I was thinking like,
- 1:19:58you know, I we don't have a luxury of there's a lot of
- 1:20:04Americans that are, you know, multiple generations.
- 1:20:07They got money or maybe they're not rich, but they have some
- 1:20:10comfort that we don't have. And so you know when we, when we
- 1:20:14play music, we're at that's time that I should be working towards
- 1:20:19my business to grow it or doing tree work.
- 1:20:21But it's like. No, but I want to do this music
- 1:20:24thing like this is what we love. And so, like, you know, we make
- 1:20:27sacrifices on on all ends, you know, like.
- 1:20:30And continue making those sacrifices, you guys, because
- 1:20:32you never know those sacrifices can make you to the to the top.
- 1:20:35Yeah, basically it. But guys really appreciate
- 1:20:39everything. You guys coming to our podcast,
- 1:20:41I will love to. Easily talk.
- 1:20:42For talk for hours and hours. I mean, we can sit down and go
- 1:20:45to a like a freaking bar and talk about this more and more.
- 1:20:49Let's do it. Yeah, we're done to do that.
- 1:20:51We gotta. Pencil that in because we.
- 1:20:52One busy people too We. Have we have one very last
- 1:20:56minute festival we got at A2? Oh, yes.
- 1:20:59Oh yes, Frida Fest. Like Frida Kahlo.
- 1:21:02I saw. I saw that.
- 1:21:03On the 15th, we'll be playing at 7:00 PM in Old Town Square.
- 1:21:07Oh, I don't. I don't know.
- 1:21:09Old Town Square like Old Town, right in front of.
- 1:21:12The Warren Town Warren, The Warren Theater in.
- 1:21:14Front of that's what's called. Oh, I did not know that.
- 1:21:17You know, I don't get a lot out much.
- 1:21:20I don't know everything that's having.
- 1:21:21I think she mentioned the run. Then we show.
- 1:21:23I saw a lot of. Office Cool, yeah.
- 1:21:25Yeah. See, There's like 2000.
- 1:21:27So when is that again? This Saturday the 15th Okay.
- 1:21:31This Saturday the 15th at 7:00. Well, we play at.
- 1:21:34The event starts from, it's from 9:50.
- 1:21:36The whole event is from. 9:50 Yeah, that's a long.
- 1:21:38Time, Yeah. So stop by.
- 1:21:39We'll be playing at from like 7:00 to 9:00, maybe 7 to 10.
- 1:21:42Cool. Yeah, we're excited.
- 1:21:44We'll show up. We're.
- 1:21:45I'm still here. Then.
- 1:21:46I'm still here then she's talking, at least.
- 1:21:47See you guys. Yeah, I.
- 1:21:49Can see you guys on that day. One thing that we have a lot of
- 1:21:53fun with is what we call our Lightning round.
- 1:21:56This lightning round, we're only gonna, we're gonna shorten it a
- 1:21:58little bit. Just kind of base.
- 1:21:59Oh, yes, yes. Thank you for our executive
- 1:22:05producer. Yes, yes.
- 1:22:07So what they? Call them right.
- 1:22:08Yeah, that's what they call them, and.
- 1:22:09That's. What they call them.
- 1:22:11Yeah. Hey, yeah.
- 1:22:12So we have a couple of questions.
- 1:22:14They're meant to be lightning. You answer quick, but they're
- 1:22:17also fun questions. Yeah, answer quick.
- 1:22:19OK. So if you can have any
- 1:22:20superpower, where would it be? And why?
- 1:22:24It's gonna be fast. Do we got it?
- 1:22:27Each one of us has to go or yeah, yeah, if I could have any
- 1:22:30superpower, it'd be like super speed.
- 1:22:34OK, Why? Cuz you can go back in time and
- 1:22:36stuff, right? OK.
- 1:22:38Flash. That's what the Flash does.
- 1:22:40That's what the and he fucks shit up but.
- 1:22:44What I got? You.
- 1:22:45I got it. This is so this is my this is my
- 1:22:49silly answer. It's the ability to eat.
- 1:22:53Unlimited, unlimitedly. With like what without I could
- 1:22:59like I can eat as much as I want forever.
- 1:23:03And oh and and I would never go hungry.
- 1:23:05I would never go hungry. But I can eat as much as I want
- 1:23:07in one sitting. OK, OK, Goku I still.
- 1:23:10Do. That.
- 1:23:12Hey, I'm gonna let you know it's not a superpower.
- 1:23:14It's a real thing. It's.
- 1:23:17A real thing. Harness that skill.
- 1:23:23What? What's?
- 1:23:25My favorite one? Theory.
- 1:23:26No. What is your conspiracy theory?
- 1:23:29Do you believe in? Yeah, What?
- 1:23:31Do you believe in? I already got it.
- 1:23:33Go ahead. You go first.
- 1:23:36Basically I've had, I've had a couple of, like moments where
- 1:23:39I'm like, dude, I'm totally in the Matrix, like any second now
- 1:23:46and he's second now, there's going to be some agents.
- 1:23:49There's going to be some agents that are going to come and try
- 1:23:51to find me because I'm touching the.
- 1:23:52Sword if they come. When I play music, sometimes
- 1:23:56when I play music, I go so deep in the in the.
- 1:23:59Person in my life. Hey, hey, To be honest, that is.
- 1:24:02That's true. Because you know, you think
- 1:24:04about it. Is this fucking real right now?
- 1:24:07Like like something bad. Really.
- 1:24:08Just. That's my favorite video game I
- 1:24:12got. I got the voice actor for that
- 1:24:14video game to shout Benji out for his birthday.
- 1:24:16Oh. Okay then, do you Later.
- 1:24:20What's your What's your conspiracy theory, man?
- 1:24:23I don't believe in conspiracy theories.
- 1:24:25One that if you how do. You.
- 1:24:27Yeah, yeah, if you could believe in one.
- 1:24:29Like baby. I sleep like a baby.
- 1:24:30What? If you could believe in one,
- 1:24:32like, what would it be? No, I know I do believe in
- 1:24:34conspiracy. I.
- 1:24:35Just like what's the one? The one that you know that
- 1:24:41nothing is real, that the government you know it's it's
- 1:24:44all just a scam. Ah.
- 1:24:47OK. OK.
- 1:24:47OK. Yeah.
- 1:24:48Yeah. You're not a sheep, got it?
- 1:24:50I sometimes there's there's reptilian.
- 1:24:52I seriously think sometimes that I'm actually in The Truman Show.
- 1:24:55Like, like, you guys are gonna pull out cameras, right?
- 1:24:59I could like, if I keep running, if I keep running in One
- 1:25:01Direction, I'll hit a wall. And it's like it's supposed to
- 1:25:03be the sky. But you know, I want to live
- 1:25:05like that too. But fuck, it's been it's been
- 1:25:07fucking me in the ass the whole entire time.
- 1:25:10What has? The matrix Life.
- 1:25:12The matrix OK having a good matrix all.
- 1:25:17Right. Who is all excited?
- 1:25:19Yeah, Yeah. Who's your favorite?
- 1:25:22Just stay together. Ready. 123 who's.
- 1:25:25Your favorite singer of all time?
- 1:25:27That was so cute. You guys were so cute.
- 1:25:32My favorite singer of all time is Daniel Rosin from Grizzly
- 1:25:36Bear, and it's because he's not like a perfect singer, but it's
- 1:25:40like it were just it's so amazing.
- 1:25:43I don't know. I love dude.
- 1:25:44It's weird. That's a weird answer, but.
- 1:25:46Well, yeah, bring out your phone.
- 1:25:47Just pick one. I.
- 1:25:48Don't have a favorite? Who's?
- 1:25:49What's it 345 No. GI don't have.
- 1:25:52It your favorite. Singer, but yourself is
- 1:25:54yourself. No, not at all.
- 1:25:57Not at. All, we'll allow one pass.
- 1:25:59I cringe. OK, what about favorite trumpet
- 1:26:01player? Yeah, go ahead.
- 1:26:02OK. Yourself.
- 1:26:05I'm gonna go with, I'm gonna go with Christian Scott.
- 1:26:10He's alive right now. He's from New Orleans and man,
- 1:26:13like there are some moments where he'll play and I go like
- 1:26:16dude, that's that's like that resonates.
- 1:26:18Like that's what I wish I could play.
- 1:26:19He plays way better trumpet than I do.
- 1:26:21But like it's it's really inspiring to see someone be so
- 1:26:24passionate and lead a band with the trumpet and be like really
- 1:26:28good at jazz. But he does like hip hop and
- 1:26:30he's he's putting, he's really leaning into his like.
- 1:26:34Roots, his culture, like like kind of African tribal roots
- 1:26:38Right now. He's really, really leaning into
- 1:26:40that. And for me, I'm like, what?
- 1:26:42What are my roots? And then like, that's kind of
- 1:26:43what's inspiring me to make like as money, as many like
- 1:26:47connections through my Chicano Ness as possible.
- 1:26:50Whether it's like hiring Chicano artists for the art or or
- 1:26:54writing all my songs in Spanish. Yeah, putting like Latin rhythms
- 1:26:59in things and turning it into kind of.
- 1:27:02A hybrid of things of some sort. That's.
- 1:27:05Next question. Good, Good, Good.
- 1:27:06What's your most memorable fan story where I was the fan or
- 1:27:11were? I'm making it either either or.
- 1:27:13You could be. I don't have any fans but.
- 1:27:15Or you're only fans. But anything being a fan of
- 1:27:21yourself or a fan of somebody or, that's the same thing,
- 1:27:25right? I haven't had too many
- 1:27:28opportunities to meet. The people that I like worship
- 1:27:32you know that I admire. I I, you know I got to play
- 1:27:36trumpet one time next to Wayne Bergeron who came to Friends
- 1:27:39University. He's like a Hollywood trumpet
- 1:27:42player. He was on like the Incredibles,
- 1:27:44he's that when you hear that Incredibles thing is like.
- 1:27:47Fucking love Incredible, you know?
- 1:27:49That super crazy trumpet. Like, that's him.
- 1:27:51And there's pictures of me and him.
- 1:27:54I'm like, I had still had the emo swoop and I love that emo
- 1:27:58and there's just like a glaze do.
- 1:28:01You have to go like this. There's, yes, Yeah.

- 1:28:10this picture. And.
- 1:28:11And I'm just like. I was like, I want someone to
- 1:28:15look like that, Look like, want me to look like.
- 1:28:17What's it called? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:28:18I want them to look at you. I want to.

- 1:28:24Look at. She wants something, you know.
- 1:28:26Okay. So you know how, like when
- 1:28:27you're looking at that guy, you know?
- 1:28:30And then it's like, true love, Yeah.
