Latest / The Rand Report: Sports / Cousins Grabs the Jersey, Donald Stares Down Retirement
Transcript
- 0:04Football is back, and already the first real
- 0:07tests are showing who still competes and who
- 0:10still needs permission. Welcome to the RAND Report.
- 0:13I'm Jim Rand, two stories that cut through the
- 0:16noise this week, not the soft camp fluff, not
- 0:19the carefully worded coach speak, the ones with
- 0:22actual edge. Start in Las Vegas, Friday practice,
- 0:26final team period. Max Crosby has been physical
- 0:29all camp. He tips a Kirk Cousins pass at the
- 0:32release point. Then he makes contact again on
- 0:35the throwing arm. Cousins has had enough. The
- 0:3837 year old quarterback gets in Crosby's face,
- 0:41grabs the jersey, words are exchanged, teammates
- 0:43step in and separate them. No punches thrown,
- 0:46but the message was delivered in front of the
- 0:48entire team. The next day, both players are held
- 0:52out of team drills. Coach Clint Kubiak said they
- 0:55violated team rules. Clear expectations on how
- 0:58the Raiders want to practice. They didn't meet
- 1:00them, so they sat. Kubiak told the media they
- 1:03addressed it with the team and they are moving
- 1:05on. Both are expected back on the field Monday.
- 1:09That is the part a lot of people will miss if
- 1:11they only see the highlight of the scrap. Cousins
- 1:14is the opening day starter. He is the veteran
- 1:17bridge for the number one overall pick, Fernando
- 1:19Mendoza. Mendoza, the Heisman winner out of Indiana,
- 1:23already got first team work on Saturday while
- 1:26the two veterans sat and looked sharp. Touchdowns
- 1:29to Brock Bowers, Michael Mayer, and Trey Tucker.
- 1:32But all camp, the starter has taken the bulk
- 1:34of the first team reps. And when the edge rusher
- 1:37started treating him like a practice dummy, the
- 1:39quarterback refused to accept it. That is not
- 1:42fragile. That is leadership. A 37 year old quarterback
- 1:46who has been written off more times than most
- 1:48players get chances still has the edge to confront
- 1:51one of the most physical defensive players in
- 1:54the league in front of everyone. Kubiak called
- 1:57them two leaders going at it. He is right. Then
- 2:00he held them both accountable the next day. Also
- 2:02right. Soft environments produce soft results.
- 2:06Competitive environments produce competitors.
- 2:09Cousins just reminded everyone which one the
- 2:11Raiders are trying to build under a new coaching
- 2:13staff. The veteran did not ask for special treatment.
- 2:16He demanded the standard that keeps a team sharp.
- 2:19Second story sits on the other side of the country.
- 2:22Aaron Donald. 35 years old. Two full seasons
- 2:25away from the game after retiring following the
- 2:282023 season. Still working out, still flying
- 2:31his trainer across the country, still putting
- 2:33himself through football specific sessions with
- 2:36the Rams. A formal workout happened, the decision
- 2:39is expected soon, possibly by the end of this
- 2:42week. If he comes back, he would join a defensive
- 2:44front that already added Miles Garrett. That
- 2:47is not a marketing line. That is two generational
- 2:50disruptors on the same defensive line. Donald
- 2:53has made it clear he does not want to return
- 2:55as a limited version of himself. He wants the
- 2:58full version or nothing. That is the only way
- 3:01this makes sense for a player of his caliber.
- 3:04Most players who step away for two years stay
- 3:07away. The body changes, the speed of the game
- 3:10changes, the fire has to be rekindled on purpose.
- 3:14Donald is still testing whether that fire is
- 3:16still there at a level that meets his own standard.
- 3:19The Rams are Super Bowl contenders either way
- 3:22with the pieces they already have, but a healthy,
- 3:25motivated Aaron Donald changes the conversation
- 3:27from contender to favorite in a lot of rooms
- 3:30around the league. It also forces every offensive
- 3:33coordinator on the schedule to redraw their protection
- 3:36plans and game plans for the entire season. This
- 3:40is the part that matters more than the exact
- 3:42timeline of the decision. Donald is not chasing
- 3:45attention. He is not chasing a farewell tour
- 3:48or a last paycheck. He is deciding whether he
- 3:51still needs to compete at the absolute highest
- 3:53level. That decision only belongs to him. But
- 3:56the fact that he is still putting himself through
- 3:58the work, flying people in and testing his body
- 4:01tells you the competitor has not fully shut the
- 4:04door. Two different stories, same core. Cousins
- 4:08refused to accept soft contact from a teammate
- 4:10in the middle of a practice period. Donald is
- 4:13refusing to accept an incomplete version of himself
- 4:16after two years away. One is 37 and still starting
- 4:20and still setting the tone. One is 35 and still
- 4:24deciding whether the fire is hot enough. Both
- 4:26are operating from the same place. The game still
- 4:29demands something real from them, and they are
- 4:31still willing to answer that demand instead of
- 4:34settling. That is the standard. Not the press
- 4:37conferences, not the carefully managed narratives.
- 4:40The willingness to still compete when it gets
- 4:42uncomfortable and when the easier path is available.
- 4:45This has been The Rand Report. I'm Jim Rand.
- 4:49Less hype, more truth, until next time. Keep
- 4:53competing.
