- 0:00Speaker 1: Helen Walker stars as Bricky Coleman, with John Beale as
- 0:04Speaker 1: Quinn Williams. On May 15, 1948, CBS presented Suspense, episode 296,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Deadline at Dawn, adapted for radio by Irving Ravitch from
- 0:16Speaker 1: Cornell Woolrich's 1944 novel, written.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Under the name William Irish.
- 0:23Speaker 1: In New York City, Bricky, a taxi dancer, gives shelter
- 0:27Speaker 1: to Quinn after meeting him at a dance hall. The
- 0:30Speaker 1: two discover a shared small town past and plan to
- 0:33Speaker 1: catch a six o'clock bus out of town. Before morning,
- 0:37Speaker 1: a robbery and a murder send them searching the city
- 0:40Speaker 1: for answers. Anton M. Leder produced and directed. Now, back
- 0:46Speaker 1: to the golden age of radio.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Suspense.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Radio's outstanding theater of thrills brings you an hour, a
- 1:14Speaker 4: full 60 minutes of suspense. Tonight, our stars, Miss Helen
- 1:19Speaker 4: Walker and Mr. John Beale. Our story, Deadline at Dawn
- 1:24Speaker 4: by William Irish. A suspense play produced and directed by
- 1:28Speaker 4: Anton M.
- 1:29Speaker 5: Leder.
- 1:35Speaker 4: If you've ever been alone in a strange big city,
- 1:37Speaker 4: you know the haunting loneliness of it. And you know
- 1:40Speaker 4: how the sight of a familiar face, the sound of
- 1:42Speaker 4: a familiar voice, can lift your spirits high. Even a
- 1:46Speaker 4: stranger who comes from your hometown becomes a long-lost friend
- 1:50Speaker 4: because he brings with him a breath of home, a
- 1:52Speaker 4: flood of memories. That was the emotion that drew Bricky
- 1:55Speaker 4: Coleman and Quinn Williams together. But their meeting wasn't the joyful,
- 1:59Speaker 4: happy kind, for it was the beginning of longing and
- 2:02Speaker 4: fear and danger. And now, with the performances of Helen
- 2:08Speaker 4: Walker as Bricky Coleman and John Beale as Quinn Williams,
- 2:11Speaker 4: and with William Irish's great story, Deadline at Dawn, we
- 2:15Speaker 4: again hope to keep you in suspense.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Until I met him, men were just pink dance tickets
- 2:42Speaker 2: to me. They were just two and a half cents
- 2:45Speaker 2: worth of commission on the dime. Piers of feet that
- 2:49Speaker 2: kept crowding mine all over the map, all over the floor,
- 2:52Speaker 2: all over the night. They were blank faces that could
- 2:56Speaker 2: steer me any way they wanted, until their five minutes
- 2:59Speaker 2: were up. Because I was a New York taxi dancer,
- 3:03Speaker 2: until I met him. A girl from a small town...
- 3:07Speaker 2: caught and held fast in the big city, with all
- 3:11Speaker 2: her dreams forgotten and all her hopes gone, and not
- 3:15Speaker 2: caring anymore, not caring at all, until I met him.
- 3:22Speaker 2: They always dimmed the lights for the last dance, just
- 3:25Speaker 2: to make the customers feel sentimental about it all. At
- 3:30Speaker 2: one in the morning, I was through again for the day.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I put on my coat, go out the side door,
- 3:36Speaker 2: Walk past the sad sacks who thought they were wolves
- 3:39Speaker 2: and loitered on the sidewalk. And then I'd begin the
- 3:42Speaker 2: twenty blocks to home. Home was a filthy old brownstone
- 3:48Speaker 2: down near the river. The long smiths an old army caught.
- 3:54Speaker 2: That was home. But at least it was a place
- 3:58Speaker 2: where I could get out of my shoes and make
- 4:00Speaker 2: some coffee and sleep to forget. I'd get home about 1.30.
- 4:06Speaker 3: You left your door open.
- 4:11Speaker 2: So I left my door open. Did you think that
- 4:15Speaker 2: was an invitation to walk in?
- 4:16Speaker 5: You better close it now.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Hey, listen here.
- 4:18Speaker 6: Close it.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Please.
- 4:22Speaker 2: All right. If you're a burglar, you won't find anything.
- 4:29Speaker 2: The rats got here first.
- 4:31Speaker 3: I am a burglar.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Well, then you're not a very smart one. What are
- 4:35Speaker 2: you looking for? Coffee grounds?
- 4:37Speaker 5: I wasn't looking for anything.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Then why don't you go, please? Find a nice, rich
- 4:40Speaker 2: old lady to rob.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Look, I need a place to stay for a while.
- 4:46Speaker 5: I thought maybe you would let me.
- 4:49Speaker 3: What?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Stay here? Look, I don't hand out favors. You're nothing
- 4:52Speaker 2: to me. I know.
- 4:53Speaker 5: It was just a hunch I had. The way you
- 4:57Speaker 5: were looking at me. I thought I could come here
- 5:00Speaker 5: for help.
- 5:01Speaker 2: The way I was looking? I've never seen you before
- 5:04Speaker 2: in my life.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Well, you were looking straight at me. At the dance
- 5:08Speaker 5: hall about an hour ago.
- 5:10Speaker 2: You mean you were at the Cinderella ballroom tonight?
- 5:13Speaker 5: Don't you remember me?
- 5:14Speaker 7: No.
- 5:16Speaker 3: That's funny.
- 5:17Speaker 2: It's not funny at all. You all look the same
- 5:19Speaker 2: to me. Namely, horrible.
- 5:22Speaker 3: I guess it's my mistake.
- 5:25Speaker 5: But I was sure. You seemed so.
- 5:29Speaker 5: So nice.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Did I?
- 5:31Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 5:32Speaker 2: That's because I was thinking of home. I always do
- 5:35Speaker 2: that on the job. Makes the night go faster.
- 5:38Speaker 3: I guess I know what you mean.
- 5:41Speaker 2: What'd you do, follow me?
- 5:42Speaker 8: No.
- 5:43Speaker 5: The man at the door gave me your address.
- 5:46Speaker 3: For a dollar.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Oh, he did, did he?
- 5:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I wanted to get off the streets. This time
- 5:50Speaker 5: of night, the cops are curious. I thought I saw
- 5:53Speaker 5: one of them following me, so I beat it down
- 5:55Speaker 5: this hall to hide. That's when I found your door open.
- 5:58Speaker 2: You picked a good place for hiding. Nobody ever comes
- 6:00Speaker 2: here but the landlady. Once a month.
- 6:03Speaker 5: Please let me stay a while.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Please.
- 6:07Speaker 2: What's your name?
- 6:09Speaker 3: Quinn Williams. Quinn? Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Never heard that name before.
- 6:12Speaker 5: It used to be my mother's before she got married.
- 6:15Speaker 5: I see.
- 6:17Speaker 3: What do you say?
- 6:20Speaker 2: You want some coffee, Quinn?
- 6:22Speaker 7: Thanks.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 6:24Speaker 2: But get this straight. One cup of coffee and nothing more.
- 6:27Speaker 2: No sugar goes with it. You give me one blink
- 6:30Speaker 2: too many.
- 6:31Speaker 5: Just coffee, I understand. A man can tell by looking
- 6:35Speaker 5: at a girl whether she means one thing or another.
- 6:38Speaker 2: You'd be surprised how many of them ought to have
- 6:39Speaker 2: an optician.
- 6:41Speaker 6: I know.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Give me a match for the oven.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Here you are.
- 6:51Speaker 2: I got the oven lit and reached down some cups
- 6:53Speaker 2: and saucers and watched him. Not that I was worried.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I wouldn't have closed the door if I hadn't thought
- 6:59Speaker 2: I could handle him. It was only that he was
- 7:03Speaker 2: so young and his face was so tight and strained.
- 7:09Speaker 2: He'd been beat by the city. Must have been like
- 7:12Speaker 2: taking candy away from a baby. And he trusted me
- 7:16Speaker 2: because I'd smiled at him while I was dancing. And
- 7:20Speaker 2: he thought that smile was for him. I wished it
- 7:24Speaker 2: was all of a sudden because he was... Difference. Coffee
- 7:30Speaker 2: won't be long.
- 7:31Speaker 5: That's all right.
- 7:32Speaker 6: I'm in no hurry.
- 7:34Speaker 2: You're pretty young for a burglar, aren't you?
- 7:36Speaker 3: It doesn't take much training.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Where'd you come from? And how'd it happen?
- 7:42Speaker 3: Oh, I come from a little town. It's nothing much,
- 7:46Speaker 3: but I like it.
- 7:48Speaker 2: I'm a hick myself.
- 7:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:50Speaker 3: My place is Glen Falls, Iowa. What's yours? What's the matter?
- 7:56Speaker 2: Nothing.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Oh, I thought I said something wrong.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Oh, no, you said something right. It's crazy, a crazy coincidence,
- 8:03Speaker 2: but I come from Glen Falls, too.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Honest?
- 8:05Speaker 2: Honest. What?
- 8:07Speaker 5: That's amazing.
- 8:08Speaker 2: I know it is. What street did you live on?
- 8:10Speaker 5: Anderson, up near Pine Street, second house down between Pine
- 8:12Speaker 5: and Oak.
- 8:13Speaker 8: When?
- 8:13Speaker 2: We're neighbors. What? I live just across the street from you.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Well, how is it we never met?
- 8:19Speaker 2: I don't know. I came here five years ago.
- 8:22Speaker 5: Oh, I've been here a year. You must have come
- 8:23Speaker 5: to New York before we moved in.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Sure. Wait a minute. Have you got a brother with
- 8:28Speaker 2: a lot of freckles?
- 8:29Speaker 6: Yeah, Johnny.
- 8:30Speaker 5: He's just a kid, about 18.
- 8:31Speaker 2: My sister's been writing to me about her new boyfriend,
- 8:33Speaker 2: a boy named Williams. How perfect he is, except for
- 8:35Speaker 2: the freckles. And, of course, they'll wear off.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Oh, that's Johnny.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Ah, so you're the boy next door.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Well, we'd probably have known each other very well if
- 8:51Speaker 5: you'd stayed home.
- 8:53Speaker 7: I know.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I wish you had stayed.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I do, too.
- 9:00Speaker 5: What's your name?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Ruth Coleman. Everybody at home calls me Bricky. They started
- 9:05Speaker 2: it because I.
- 9:06Speaker 8: I know.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Because of your hair, huh? That's right.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Do you ever feel that you want to go back?
- 9:13Speaker 3: Every day.
- 9:15Speaker 2: There's a bus leaves New York every morning at six.
- 9:18Speaker 2: I know.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I've inquired.
- 9:21Speaker 2: I've got the fare sewed up in my mattress.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Why haven't you gone?
- 9:26Speaker 2: Because my mother thinks I'm dancing in a Broadway show.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Because I'd be too ashamed. Because it's so hard to
- 9:33Speaker 2: go back.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Yeah, but you ought to go, Bricky. This morning at
- 9:36Speaker 5: six o'clock.
- 9:37Speaker 7: It's hard.
- 9:37Speaker 5: You ought to go back.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Hard going back alone. If someone could come with me, I.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Would you come home too, Quinn?
- 9:49Speaker 3: No, Bricky.
- 9:49Speaker 2: You want to escape from the city, don't you? Just
- 9:51Speaker 2: like me. You want to go back?
- 9:52Speaker 5: Yeah, sure I do.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Well, then come with me. If it's the fare you're
- 9:54Speaker 2: worried about, I've got enough for both of us, including
- 9:56Speaker 2: a good dinner in Chicago. Anything for the boy next door, quick.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Thanks, Bricky, but it's too late. The police will be
- 10:03Speaker 5: looking for me around 8 o'clock this morning.
- 10:06Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I forgot. How long have you been a burglar?
- 10:14Speaker 3: About three hours.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Three hours?
- 10:18Speaker 5: I did it tonight for the first time. So you see, Bricky,
- 10:22Speaker 5: it's a little too late for me to go back.
- 10:25Speaker 5: I've missed the bus by three hours.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Coffee's ready, Quinn.
- 10:32Speaker 6: Oh, good.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Cream and sugar?
- 10:35Speaker 6: No, thanks.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Black.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Was it easy?
- 10:48Speaker 3: Very easy.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Why'd you do it?
- 10:51Speaker 5: You'll do anything when you've gone for four days without eating.
- 10:55Speaker 7: Oh.
- 10:56Speaker 3: But it's funny.
- 10:57Speaker 5: After I'd done it, I went straight to the best
- 10:59Speaker 5: restaurant in town. I looked at their menu and got
- 11:02Speaker 5: ready to order everything on it. Two helpings of everything.
- 11:06Speaker 5: But I couldn't eat. So I got up and walked out.
- 11:11Speaker 5: That's when I began to think cops were trailing me.
- 11:15Speaker 5: I'm not used to being a robber.
- 11:17Speaker 2: So you still got it all.
- 11:21Speaker 5: With you? $ 2, 500 in cash. Divided up into small rolls
- 11:26Speaker 5: in all my pockets. You want to see it?
- 11:30Speaker 2: No.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Neither do I.
- 11:32Speaker 3: But it's there. I can feel it.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Against my skin.
- 11:37Speaker 3: All over my body.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Where did you get it, Quinn?
- 11:42Speaker 5: I was working for an electrician about four months ago.
- 11:45Speaker 5: One day I got a call to go to a...
- 11:47Speaker 5: big house on 71st Street and put a fixture in
- 11:49Speaker 5: the bathroom wall. I had to cut a big hole
- 11:51Speaker 5: in the wall to do it. While I was doing that,
- 11:53Speaker 5: I ran into a wooden box in the wall. I
- 11:58Speaker 5: did my work just beside it.
- 12:00Speaker 2: And that box?
- 12:02Speaker 5: That box was the back of a safe.
- 12:05Speaker 6: Oh.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Put into the wall of a study in the next room.
- 12:09Speaker 5: The front of the safe was good heavy steel. When
- 12:12Speaker 5: they built it, nobody thought it could be broken into
- 12:14Speaker 5: from the other side through the bathrooms. Nobody ever would have, either,
- 12:18Speaker 5: until an electrician ran into it one day by mistake.
- 12:21Speaker 2: But all this happened four months ago.
- 12:23Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 5: You see, I'd brought more tools with me than I
- 12:27Speaker 5: needed that day, and I left some of them in
- 12:29Speaker 5: my bag downstairs on a little table near the front door.
- 12:32Speaker 5: When I got back to the shop, I found a
- 12:34Speaker 5: key in the bag. I must have brushed it in
- 12:36Speaker 5: while I was putting the tools back after finishing the job.
- 12:40Speaker 5: It turned out to be a key to the front door.
- 12:43Speaker 2: You didn't return it.
- 12:45Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 12:46Speaker 5: Oh, I meant to, but right then I forgot all
- 12:49Speaker 5: about it. And when I did remember that I had
- 12:52Speaker 5: the key, I was out of work and hungry and
- 12:57Speaker 5: wanting money badly, so I went back there to my box.
- 13:03Speaker 5: I opened that hole again, pulled the back of the
- 13:05Speaker 5: safe out. I didn't bother with any of the papers
- 13:08Speaker 5: or securities. I just took the cash. The house was empty.
- 13:13Speaker 5: The man who lives there Society fella by the name
- 13:16Speaker 5: of Graves was probably out on the town, so I
- 13:19Speaker 5: just walked out the front door. Seems like ten years ago.
- 13:25Speaker 5: It was only three hours.
- 13:28Speaker 2: So this Graves man will see the hole in the
- 13:31Speaker 2: morning when he goes in to take a shower, and
- 13:34Speaker 2: then he'll call the police?
- 13:35Speaker 5: It'll be a quick trial, and a short one. But
- 13:39Speaker 5: the sentence won't be so short.
- 13:41Speaker 2: The boy next door... The boy you wave to when
- 13:45Speaker 2: you come in or out of your gate. The grinning
- 13:48Speaker 2: boy next door, friendly as a puppy.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Go back, Bricky.
- 13:52Speaker 5: It's where you belong. It's the only kind of life
- 13:54Speaker 5: for you.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Come with me, Quinn.
- 13:55Speaker 5: I've told you I can't. They've got a long arm.
- 13:58Speaker 5: They'll find me. And I'd rather have them find me
- 14:01Speaker 5: here in the city.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Have you still got the key? The key you went
- 14:06Speaker 2: in with?
- 14:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Why?
- 14:09Speaker 2: Well, if you can get back in before he comes home...
- 14:13Speaker 2: Just in and out. Long enough to put the money back.
- 14:16Speaker 2: They won't come all the way to Iowa for you
- 14:17Speaker 2: just for chopping a hole in the wall if nothing's
- 14:19Speaker 2: been taken.
- 14:19Speaker 7: But, Ricky, that probably.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Don't you want to go home at six o'clock this morning?
- 14:24Speaker 6: Yes, Ricky.
- 14:25Speaker 2: If he's out on the town, he won't be home yet.
- 14:26Speaker 2: At least that's what we'll pray for.
- 14:28Speaker 6: We?
- 14:29Speaker 2: We'll go together. Now, I'll wait outside for you, and
- 14:32Speaker 2: then we'll go down to the terminal and buy our
- 14:34Speaker 2: tickets and wait for the bus. We'll wait for dawn together, Quinn.
- 14:39Speaker 5: You mean you'd do this for me?
- 14:40Speaker 2: For the boy next door. Anytime. Anything. There was no
- 14:49Speaker 2: time to lose. Graves might be coming home any minute.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I ripped the money out of my mattress and we
- 14:54Speaker 2: ran out into the cold, empty streets. Just as a
- 14:57Speaker 2: cab cruised by. We piled into it and told him
- 15:00Speaker 2: to take us to 71st Street. And to take us faster.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Everybody's always in a hurry. What's your hurry? The night's
- 15:09Speaker 2: young yet. Never mind the conversation, Joe.
- 15:11Speaker 7: Drive.
- 15:12Speaker 2: The customer's always right.
- 15:19Speaker 5: I just remembered.
- 15:20Speaker 3: What?
- 15:21Speaker 5: I can't pay for this cab. Unless I use some
- 15:24Speaker 5: of our capital.
- 15:25Speaker 2: I don't care what you use, pal. Just so it's money.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Don't worry about it. You'll get paid. I'll pay him.
- 15:31Speaker 2: We don't want to use any of our capital, not
- 15:33Speaker 2: a single penny. It's all got to go back.
- 15:36Speaker 5: Ricky, when we get out of this, when we get
- 15:37Speaker 5: back home, I'll thank you then. I'll find a way
- 15:41Speaker 5: to thank you.
- 15:43Speaker 6: 71st Street.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Any special number?
- 15:46Speaker 5: No, just let us out here on the corner.
- 15:54Speaker 4: That's 90 cents, and I can break a 50 if
- 15:57Speaker 4: I have to.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Here's 90 cents, and here's a dime.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Have fun.
- 16:17Speaker 6: Well, here we are.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Where's the house?
- 16:20Speaker 5: Across the street and up a little. You wait here.
- 16:23Speaker 8: All right.
- 16:24Speaker 5: Don't come any closer than this. I'll be back in
- 16:27Speaker 5: no time. Don't be frightened, Bricky.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Don't take any chances, Quinn. If you see any lights,
- 16:31Speaker 2: if it looks as if he's gotten back already, don't
- 16:34Speaker 2: go all the way in. Just drop the money inside
- 16:36Speaker 2: the door.
- 16:37Speaker 5: All right, Bricky. Goodbye, then. Goodbye, Quinn.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Hurry back.
- 16:47Speaker 2: I waited for him there in the chilly night on
- 16:49Speaker 2: the dark, empty street.
- 16:52Speaker 8: Why?
- 16:52Speaker 2: I knew better. New York had taught me one thing,
- 16:56Speaker 2: and that was never to be a sucker for a man.
- 16:59Speaker 2: But then, this was no man. This was the boy
- 17:03Speaker 2: who lived across from me on Anderson Street in Glen Falls, Iowa.
- 17:08Speaker 2: The boy who'd come here to do big things, to
- 17:10Speaker 2: lick the town, and instead, he'd been licked. Instead, he
- 17:16Speaker 2: was hiding in the dark, sneaking along the streets, helpless.
- 17:21Speaker 2: The boy next to Then I suddenly crouched back into
- 17:25Speaker 2: a doorway. A patrolman was coming on his tour of duty.
- 17:28Speaker 2: He stopped near me, not ten yards away. But his
- 17:32Speaker 2: back was to me, and his hand was opening a
- 17:35Speaker 2: call box.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Ronson reporting in.
- 17:39Speaker 8: 2.35 a.m.
- 17:40Speaker 6: How's the rummy game going?
- 17:45Speaker 3: Another thing, side.
- 17:47Speaker 6: Quiet as church.
- 17:49Speaker 2: He finished his call, closed the box, and went on
- 17:52Speaker 2: down the street. Then he turned a corner and disappeared.
- 17:57Speaker 2: And I breathed again. He'd been right, though. It was
- 18:04Speaker 2: quiet as a church. And that was wrong. Because Quinn
- 18:09Speaker 2: should have been back long ago.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Ricky.
- 18:15Speaker 2: What's the matter?
- 18:16Speaker 3: Ricky.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Tell me, Quinn. What is it? What is it? What
- 18:19Speaker 2: are you frightened about? What happened in there?
- 18:20Speaker 5: He's been killed.
- 18:21Speaker 3: What? He's dead.
- 18:22Speaker 5: He's lying in there.
- 18:23Speaker 4: Dead.
- 18:24Speaker 2: The man who lives there?
- 18:25Speaker 6: Yeah, Mr. Graves.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Was it you, Quinn? Did you do it the first
- 18:33Speaker 2: time you were in there tonight?
- 18:35Speaker 5: I swear I didn't, Bricky. I only took the money.
- 18:37Speaker 5: He wasn't even there. He must have come back since.
- 18:40Speaker 2: I knew you didn't, Quinn. I knew even though I asked.
- 18:45Speaker 5: Go down to the terminal. Get your ticket and climb
- 18:48Speaker 5: on that bus and forget we ever met.
- 18:50Speaker 6: Go on, Bricky. Beat it.
- 18:52Speaker 5: Before they find out.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Not without you.
- 18:53Speaker 5: But don't you see now, it's murder they'll charge me with.
- 18:56Speaker 5: They'll find the bathroom fixture tampered with, they'll trace it
- 18:58Speaker 5: to the electrician, then to me, and they'll naturally think, oh,
- 19:01Speaker 5: don't you see, it's too late, Ricky.
- 19:02Speaker 2: It's never too late. Don't you know that? Not until
- 19:06Speaker 2: the last second of the last minute of the last hour.
- 19:09Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 19:10Speaker 2: We'll go back in there and see if we can
- 19:11Speaker 2: figure it out. It's our only hope. We're fighting for
- 19:14Speaker 2: our lives, Quinn, for our lives, and we have until
- 19:16Speaker 2: six o'clock this morning to win our fight.
- 19:19Speaker 3: All right, champ.
- 19:22Speaker 5: Come on.
- 19:24Speaker 2: And so, very slowly, we went together into the place
- 19:28Speaker 2: where death was. The door closed on our backs, and
- 19:33Speaker 2: we felt our way down a long and narrow hallway.
- 19:36Speaker 5: He's upstairs. I don't want any lights on down here.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Just hang on to my sleeve. I'll lead the way.
- 19:41Speaker 3: All right.
- 19:44Speaker 2: We went forward in a sort of swimming darkness that
- 19:47Speaker 2: was almost liquid. It was so dense. I could feel
- 19:50Speaker 2: the muscles in his arms shivering. But he was brave,
- 19:54Speaker 2: not afraid. He was going into it, not running away
- 19:58Speaker 2: from it.
- 19:58Speaker 5: There's a step here.
- 20:01Speaker 2: The stair creaked under our weight. I wondered if there
- 20:04Speaker 2: were anyone else in the house. Anyone still alive? Suppose
- 20:09Speaker 2: someone had slept through the murder. I'd be awakened any
- 20:12Speaker 2: moment by us.
- 20:13Speaker 5: Now turn to the right.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Okay.
- 20:17Speaker 2: We're on the second floor now. I smell the aroma
- 20:21Speaker 2: of leather and woodwork. I smell the last lingering trace
- 20:25Speaker 2: of a cigar. I smelled powder. A harsh, deadly powder.
- 20:33Speaker 2: And then I thought I saw... I thought I smelled
- 20:36Speaker 2: something sweet. Something very sweet.
- 20:39Speaker 6: Here, Bricky.
- 20:40Speaker 3: All right.
- 20:43Speaker 2: They say you can't smell a recent death, but I
- 20:46Speaker 2: could smell a stillness and a presence in it that
- 20:50Speaker 2: was more than just emptiness.
- 20:52Speaker 6: Get your eyes ready.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Here go the lights.
- 20:58Speaker 2: The dead man lay in the middle of the study.
- 20:59Speaker 2: His face was all out of focus. The lines that
- 21:03Speaker 2: had been laugh lines were creases now, The mouth that
- 21:06Speaker 2: had been either strong or weak was just a gap now,
- 21:10Speaker 2: a place where the face was open. The eyes that
- 21:13Speaker 2: had been either kindly or cruel were just glossy, lifeless
- 21:17Speaker 2: insects now. This was the dead man, and we'd come
- 21:23Speaker 2: for his secret.
- 21:25Speaker 3: This is it, Bricky.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Yes, this is it.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Now what do we do?
- 21:32Speaker 2: Well, shouldn't we close it.
- 21:37Speaker 2: They seem to be watching us.
- 21:39Speaker 6: No, don't touch him.
- 21:40Speaker 5: I don't know how to anyway.
- 21:44Speaker 2: He's still in his tuxedo. He couldn't have been home
- 21:48Speaker 2: very long.
- 21:48Speaker 6: No.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Can you tell what it was done with?
- 21:52Speaker 5: No, I'll have to unbutton his jacket.
- 21:55Speaker 7: All right.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 22:02Speaker 6: There it is.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Must have been a gun.
- 22:05Speaker 6: Yeah, a bullet.
- 22:06Speaker 5: It's round and frazzled. A knife would have made a slit.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Then we can be sure no one else was in
- 22:09Speaker 2: the house or they would have heard it go off.
- 22:11Speaker 5: And the killer must have taken the gun away. There's
- 22:12Speaker 5: no sign of one lying around.
- 22:13Speaker 2: So he didn't do it himself. It can't be suicide.
- 22:16Speaker 5: That's right.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Now what?
- 22:19Speaker 5: We'd better look in his pockets.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Yes.
- 22:22Speaker 6: I'll do it.
- 22:23Speaker 5: You look the things over as I hand them to you.
- 22:25Speaker 3: All right, Quinn.
- 22:26Speaker 5: I'll start up here in the breast pocket. That's the
- 22:28Speaker 5: highest pocket in anybody's suit.
- 22:31Speaker 3: His handkerchief.
- 22:32Speaker 5: Look, Quinn.
- 22:34Speaker 2: The bullet went through this. The way it folded it
- 22:38Speaker 2: just made one little hole. But when you open it up,
- 22:42Speaker 2: it makes three separate holes. Like when you cut papers
- 22:46Speaker 2: and make them into patterns.
- 22:48Speaker 5: The one on the left side's empty. The right-hand pocket,
- 22:53Speaker 5: empty too.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Try inside the jacket. Yeah. Take out everything, no matter
- 22:58Speaker 2: what it is.
- 22:58Speaker 3: All right.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Cigarette case, silver, Tiffany's. Three cigarettes in it. The wallet.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Two fives and a single. Two ticket stubs from tonight's
- 23:12Speaker 2: show at the Belasco. C-112 and 114. So we know
- 23:16Speaker 2: where he was from 8.30 to 11.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Anything else?
- 23:20Speaker 2: Business cards. Stafford, Holmes, Inglesby, whoever they are. Oh, and
- 23:26Speaker 2: a snapshot. Girl in riding togs.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Let's see that.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Yeah, it's the same ones in the silver frame over
- 23:33Speaker 5: there on the desk.
- 23:33Speaker 8: Okay.
- 23:34Speaker 5: To Stephen with love from Barbara.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Then she didn't do it. If she had, she wouldn't
- 23:38Speaker 2: be there on his desk anymore. Just the silver frame, maybe,
- 23:40Speaker 2: but not her anymore. That's common sense.
- 23:42Speaker 5: All right, let's go on.
- 23:44Speaker 3: I'll have to lift him a little.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 23:50Speaker 5: Left rear in the trousers.
- 23:53Speaker 6: Nothing.
- 23:55Speaker 5: Right rear. Spare handkerchief. Left side.
- 24:02Speaker 6: Nothing.
- 24:04Speaker 5: Right side.
- 24:06Speaker 3: Match folder.
- 24:07Speaker 5: Some loose change.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Latch key.
- 24:14Speaker 6: That's it.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Not much help.
- 24:19Speaker 5: Do we know what we're.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Doing, Bricky?
- 24:21Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Quinn?
- 24:25Speaker 7: What?
- 24:27Speaker 2: A man who's a cigarette smoker, and we found that
- 24:29Speaker 2: case in his pocket. Would he go in for cigars, too?
- 24:33Speaker 6: Maybe.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Some people smoke both.
- 24:34Speaker 2: But would he smoke two cigars alone by himself?
- 24:38Speaker 5: Look, Quinn.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Two butts in this tray.
- 24:41Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:41Speaker 5: And the tray is between two chairs facing each other.
- 24:45Speaker 5: One cigar in one notch of the tray. The other
- 24:47Speaker 5: one around on the other side from it.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Two people, Quinn.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Two men. And they were having an argument. One of
- 24:53Speaker 5: them was worked up about something.
- 24:54Speaker 7: You see?
- 24:55Speaker 5: This butt is smooth at the mouth end.
- 24:57Speaker 6: And look at this one.
- 24:58Speaker 5: Chewed to ribbons. Chewed to a fringe. That tells it.
- 25:00Speaker 2: But which is which? Who was calm and who was
- 25:02Speaker 2: steamed up? And who was the other man with Graves? Oh, Quinn.
- 25:07Speaker 6: Wait a minute.
- 25:08Speaker 3: Here's something.
- 25:08Speaker 8: What?
- 25:09Speaker 5: It must have fallen out of his pocket. He was
- 25:10Speaker 5: probably sitting on it.
- 25:13Speaker 8: Fine.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Another book of matches.
- 25:15Speaker 3: That's just it.
- 25:15Speaker 5: Another one. Graves had some on him, so this is
- 25:18Speaker 5: the other man.
- 25:19Speaker 2: And did he leave his name on it?
- 25:21Speaker 5: No, but he was excited. Look how many matches he
- 25:24Speaker 5: used up just on that one cigar.
- 25:25Speaker 2: The folder could have been half used up before he began.
- 25:27Speaker 6: Maybe, but.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Take this. What does it tell you?
- 25:30Speaker 2: It tells me to chew Dawson's gum.
- 25:33Speaker 5: Not to cover inside.
- 25:35Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 25:37Speaker 2: What are you driving at?
- 25:38Speaker 6: Now, wait.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Here, take my matches.
- 25:41Speaker 5: Now, tear one off and strike it.
- 25:44Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:45Speaker 8: Okay.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Blow it out.
- 25:49Speaker 5: You see what you did?
- 25:51Speaker 2: No.
- 25:52Speaker 5: You tore the match from the right-hand side, didn't you?
- 25:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:55Speaker 5: That's what everybody does. They start on the outside, on
- 25:57Speaker 5: the right... and worked their way over to the left.
- 26:00Speaker 5: But this folder was worked in reverse. Now do you see?
- 26:04Speaker 5: The man sitting in this chair, facing Graves, was left-handed.
- 26:09Speaker 2: I see.
- 26:10Speaker 5: We're making progress.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Are we, Quinn?
- 26:12Speaker 5: Of course we are. We know this man was rattled
- 26:15Speaker 5: about something. That he whittled away 15 matches to one cigar,
- 26:18Speaker 5: then mangled it to ribbons between his teeth. That he
- 26:21Speaker 5: was probably on bad terms with Graves, and that he's left-handed.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Fine. Only you've missed something.
- 26:26Speaker 6: What?
- 26:28Speaker 2: The matches belong to a woman.
- 26:30Speaker 7: A woman?
- 26:31Speaker 5: A woman chopped that cigar to pieces?
- 26:33Speaker 2: Smell the folder. What do you get?
- 26:36Speaker 5: Sulfur, the way matches always smell.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Now, give that a minute to clear away. That's the
- 26:40Speaker 2: stronger of the two. It tops the other. Now.
- 26:46Speaker 6: Okay.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Perfume, isn't it?
- 26:48Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 26:49Speaker 2: It's been carried around all day in a handbag. A
- 26:51Speaker 2: handbag that stinks of perfume. I noticed it in the
- 26:54Speaker 2: dark when we were coming in. There's been a woman
- 26:56Speaker 2: in this room tonight.
- 26:58Speaker 5: Well, that gives us two of them, a man and
- 27:00Speaker 5: a woman. And they weren't here together. There are only
- 27:03Speaker 5: two chairs, one for Graves and the other one for
- 27:05Speaker 5: each of his visitors.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Who was the last to go, the man or the woman?
- 27:08Speaker 5: I don't know, but we're started. Look what we've dug
- 27:11Speaker 5: up in half an hour.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Two unidentified people in the biggest city in the world.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Oh, you're right. It's no use.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Oh, even so, we can't give up.
- 27:23Speaker 3: It's no use.
- 27:25Speaker 5: And what's more.
- 27:27Speaker 3: I'm yellow, Bricky. Let's give it up.
- 27:29Speaker 2: You're not yellow, Quinn. Or I wouldn't be up here
- 27:32Speaker 2: in this room with you.
- 27:34Speaker 5: I'd better tell you this while I can, Bricky.
- 27:36Speaker 9: What?
- 27:39Speaker 6: I love you.
- 27:43Speaker 2: It's three o'clock, Quinn, and we have till six. Three hours.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Bricky.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Save it, Quinn. Save it for the bus when we're
- 27:55Speaker 2: on our way home.
- 27:57Speaker 5: All right. But I don't know what to do next,
- 28:00Speaker 5: do you?
- 28:02Speaker 2: No, I don't.
- 28:05Speaker 3: What's that?
- 28:16Speaker 4: In tonight's full hour of suspense, Helen Walker and John
- 28:20Speaker 4: Beale co-star in Deadline at Dawn by William Irish. Tonight's
- 28:24Speaker 4: study in suspense. In just a moment, we will return
- 28:35Speaker 4: with Act Two of Suspense.
- 28:37Speaker 6: This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 28:41Speaker 3: And now, back to our.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Hollywood soundstage in Act Two of Deadline at Dawn. Co-starring
- 28:47Speaker 4: Miss Helen Walker as Bricky Coleman and Mr. John Beale
- 28:51Speaker 4: as Quinn Williams. In radio's outstanding theater of thrills, Suspense.
- 28:56Speaker 6: Suspense.
- 29:08Speaker 4: All the emotions of a lifetime have been crowded into
- 29:11Speaker 4: one night for Bricky Coleman and Quinn Williams, and dawn
- 29:14Speaker 4: is a fast-approaching deadline which they must meet. The bus
- 29:18Speaker 4: which will take them to home and safety seems remote
- 29:20Speaker 4: and unattainable as they stand now over.
- 29:23Speaker 3: The body of a dead man in the quiet.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Apartment, knowing that they must find his murderer or stand
- 29:30Speaker 4: incriminated for the crime themselves. And suddenly, a terrifying sound
- 29:36Speaker 4: comes to them.
- 29:37Speaker 5: What is it, Bricky?
- 29:39Speaker 6: What is it?
- 29:39Speaker 2: It sounds like a burglar alarm.
- 29:41Speaker 5: Well, the front doorbell, maybe. Wait a minute, there's a
- 29:44Speaker 5: box over there, against the wall.
- 29:45Speaker 2: A telephone.
- 29:46Speaker 5: Follow the cord. It's in his desk. In the drawer.
- 29:51Speaker 2: What should we do?
- 29:51Speaker 5: Well, I ought to answer it.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Oh, be careful. You'll have the police here. They'll know
- 29:56Speaker 2: it's not his voice.
- 29:56Speaker 5: I'll talk low. I'll pretend I'm him. Say a prayer, Bricky.
- 30:05Speaker 6: Hello?
- 30:06Speaker 7: Darling, this is Barbara. I had to speak to you.
- 30:10Speaker 7: We've never parted angry like this before.
- 30:12Speaker 3: I know.
- 30:13Speaker 7: Maybe if we hadn't gone there, to that parakeet place,
- 30:16Speaker 7: it wouldn't have happened.
- 30:18Speaker 6: No.
- 30:18Speaker 7: Who was she? The tall redhead in the light green dress?
- 30:23Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 30:24Speaker 7: You told me that before. Then why'd she slip a
- 30:28Speaker 7: note into your hand? I saw her do it, you know.
- 30:31Speaker 6: Did you?
- 30:32Speaker 7: And then you couldn't wait to see me to my
- 30:33Speaker 7: door and get me off your hands. What happened, Steve?
- 30:37Speaker 7: Did this woman come by to see you afterward? Is
- 30:40Speaker 7: that why you wanted to get rid of me?
- 30:42Speaker 3: No, Barbara.
- 30:44Speaker 7: Steve, you sound so far away. Is it the telephone?
- 30:50Speaker 6: Or is it you?
- 30:52Speaker 5: Poor connection.
- 30:53Speaker 7: You sound so cagey. As if someone were there now.
- 30:58Speaker 7: Can't you talk louder?
- 30:59Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 31:00Speaker 7: What's going on there? This is Stephen, isn't it?
- 31:03Speaker 5: It's just catching on. I'm sunk.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Take your hand away from the mouthpiece and turn it
- 31:06Speaker 2: my way. Sugar, come on. I'm getting tired of waiting.
- 31:11Speaker 2: How much longer are you going to stand there talking?
- 31:16Speaker 7: I'm sorry, Stephen. Forgive me.
- 31:19Speaker 2: I didn't know. You can hang up now.
- 31:26Speaker 3: I feel like a heel.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Well, stop it. We don't have time.
- 31:30Speaker 5: A parakeet? That's a nightclub, isn't it?
- 31:32Speaker 2: Yes, on 54th Street. A woman slipped him a note, Quinn.
- 31:35Speaker 6: A woman. Could be.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Do you think he tore it up?
- 31:38Speaker 6: Maybe not.
- 31:38Speaker 5: Maybe he wanted to have a good look at it
- 31:40Speaker 5: when he got home, alone.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Let's look again.
- 31:42Speaker 5: I went through those pockets pretty carefully. I'm sure it's
- 31:44Speaker 5: not there.
- 31:45Speaker 2: We might have missed something. Quinn, turn him over again.
- 31:49Speaker 6: All right. Nothing.
- 31:57Speaker 3: Nothing at all.
- 31:59Speaker 5: Shall we go through the desk?
- 32:00Speaker 2: Wait a minute.
- 32:01Speaker 5: What?
- 32:02Speaker 2: Run your eyes over him again.
- 32:03Speaker 5: I don't see a thing.
- 32:07Speaker 2: He's very well dressed. And yet, isn't that a hole
- 32:11Speaker 2: in the heel of his sock? There, just showing over
- 32:15Speaker 2: the shoe?
- 32:15Speaker 5: That's funny.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Take his shoe off, Quinn.
- 32:22Speaker 6: Okay. The note.
- 32:27Speaker 5: Of course.
- 32:28Speaker 2: He didn't want Barbara to see it.
- 32:29Speaker 5: So he hid it here until he could be alone.
- 32:31Speaker 2: And he never was alone.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Just a scrawl.
- 32:33Speaker 7: Go on.
- 32:35Speaker 5: Mr. Graves, I'd like to speak to you in private
- 32:41Speaker 5: after you've taken the young lady home. And I don't
- 32:45Speaker 5: mean some other time. I mean tonight. I wouldn't want
- 32:48Speaker 5: to be disappointed. That's all.
- 32:52Speaker 3: It isn't signed.
- 32:54Speaker 2: A woman of the matchers.
- 32:55Speaker 5: Sounds like a shakedown.
- 32:56Speaker 2: You mean blackmail?
- 32:57Speaker 6: That's right.
- 32:58Speaker 5: He'd have to pay attention to a note like this.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Then we're going nightclubbing, my boy. We'll visit the parakeet.
- 33:03Speaker 5: It'll be closing by now.
- 33:04Speaker 2: She must have been seen there. A tall redhead in
- 33:06Speaker 2: a light green dress. We'll check with the people who
- 33:08Speaker 2: work there. They'll still be around. Waiters, checkroom girl, washroom attendant.
- 33:11Speaker 2: We'll find her.
- 33:12Speaker 6: Oh, we will, Bricky.
- 33:13Speaker 2: I'll trace her if I have to go over the
- 33:14Speaker 2: hairbrushes in the dressing room one by one for stray
- 33:17Speaker 2: red hairs.
- 33:17Speaker 5: Let me kill the lights. I'll be right with you.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Hey, don't forget the switch. The one over the sink
- 33:21Speaker 2: in the bathroom.
- 33:21Speaker 6: I won't.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Come on, Quinn. Time's running out.
- 33:26Speaker 5: In a minute.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Is anything wrong?
- 33:30Speaker 5: I don't know. Look what I found.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Why, it's a check. Yeah. Made out to Stephen Graves
- 33:39Speaker 2: for $ 12, 000. Signed by Arthur Holmes.
- 33:44Speaker 5: And look how it's stamped.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Returned.
- 33:46Speaker 5: No funds.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Where'd you find it?
- 33:48Speaker 5: In the dry bottom of the tub.
- 33:50Speaker 2: How did it ever get there?
- 33:51Speaker 3: Just one way.
- 33:53Speaker 5: When I came here tonight, the first time, I did it.
- 33:56Speaker 2: How?
- 33:56Speaker 5: Well, don't you see, when I pulled the cash box
- 33:58Speaker 5: out and opened it, the check must have slipped out
- 34:01Speaker 5: into the tub without my noticing it.
- 34:03Speaker 6: Oh.
- 34:03Speaker 5: And then this fellow Holmes came, our jittery cigar smoker,
- 34:07Speaker 5: maybe to ask Graves not to prosecute on a bad check,
- 34:11Speaker 5: to stall for time. Graves went to find the check,
- 34:15Speaker 5: and he couldn't, because it was on the other side
- 34:17Speaker 5: of the wall in his bathtub, and Holmes thought he
- 34:20Speaker 5: was trying to put something over on him.
- 34:22Speaker 2: And you think Combs shot him? Killed him for $ 12, 000?
- 34:26Speaker 5: It's been done before.
- 34:29Speaker 2: And what about our redhead?
- 34:31Speaker 3: Bricky, it's the man. It's gotta be.
- 34:33Speaker 2: I think it's the woman. We'll have to split up.
- 34:37Speaker 3: No, let's do it together.
- 34:38Speaker 5: The way we started.
- 34:39Speaker 2: It's too late. We can't follow them one at a time.
- 34:41Speaker 2: Our deadline's at dawn, Quinn, and we've got less than
- 34:43Speaker 2: three hours.
- 34:44Speaker 5: That bus to Glen Falls.
- 34:46Speaker 2: The last bus. Remember that. It's the last bus for you.
- 34:52Speaker 2: And for me, too.
- 34:54Speaker 3: Then we'll be saying goodbye, Bricky?
- 34:57Speaker 2: Yes, Quinn. Goodbye till dawn. We went down into the
- 35:11Speaker 2: empty streets without talking to each other again. And I
- 35:14Speaker 2: went one way and Quinn went the other. In ten minutes,
- 35:17Speaker 2: we were blocks apart. Maybe miles. But it seemed to
- 35:21Speaker 2: me that I was still at his side, still with him,
- 35:24Speaker 2: as he finally found an all-night drugstore and went back
- 35:27Speaker 2: into a booth. I knew he'd dial all the Arthur
- 35:30Speaker 2: Holmeses in the book and talk to a lot of angry,
- 35:33Speaker 2: sleepy people. And then he'd find the right one, the
- 35:38Speaker 2: Arthur Holmes we wanted. What would Quinn do then? What
- 35:42Speaker 2: would he say? What would happen?
- 35:54Speaker 6: Hello?
- 35:55Speaker 10: Yes.
- 35:57Speaker 5: Is this Mr. Arthur Holmes?
- 35:59Speaker 6: Who is this?
- 36:00Speaker 5: Well, Mr. Holmes, you don't know me.
- 36:02Speaker 6: Who is this that wants to speak to Mr.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Holmes?
- 36:05Speaker 5: The name isn't known to you, Mr.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Holmes, but.
- 36:07Speaker 6: What makes you think this is Mr. Holmes? And are
- 36:10Speaker 6: you aware that it's almost four o'clock in the morning?
- 36:12Speaker 6: What do you want?
- 36:14Speaker 5: I have a check here that belongs to Mr. Holmes.
- 36:17Speaker 5: Will you let me talk to him?
- 36:19Speaker 6: You're speaking to him.
- 36:21Speaker 5: It's made out to Stephen Graves, and I have it
- 36:23Speaker 5: right here in my hand. find it i found it
- 36:26Speaker 5: on the seat of a taxi it must have slipped
- 36:28Speaker 5: out of someone's wallet who was with you when you
- 36:30Speaker 5: found it no one just me by myself.
- 36:33Speaker 6: Whom did you show it to afterwards.
- 36:36Speaker 5: No one who's with you now no one i swear
- 36:40Speaker 5: and you.
- 36:40Speaker 3: Called because you thought i might want it back that's
- 36:43Speaker 3: right i'm sorry.
- 36:45Speaker 5: Your time is up deposit another nickel please shall i
- 36:49Speaker 5: hang up mr holmes.
- 36:55Speaker 6: Tell me, what's your name?
- 36:57Speaker 5: Quinn Williams.
- 36:59Speaker 6: Tell me something about yourself. What do you do? Are
- 37:02Speaker 6: you a married man?
- 37:03Speaker 5: No, I'm single. I live by myself.
- 37:06Speaker 6: Not even a roommate? Nobody.
- 37:08Speaker 5: Strictly lone wolf.
- 37:09Speaker 6: I'd like to see that check, Quinn. Maybe I can
- 37:11Speaker 6: do something for you.
- 37:13Speaker 3: Fair enough.
- 37:14Speaker 6: There's a little bar called Owen's down on 51st. You
- 37:16Speaker 6: know it?
- 37:17Speaker 5: I know where it is.
- 37:18Speaker 6: It'll take me about 15 minutes to get dressed and
- 37:20Speaker 6: get down there. Is 15 minutes good for you?
- 37:23Speaker 5: Just fine, Mr.
- 37:23Speaker 6: Holmes. I'll see you there.
- 37:27Speaker 5: You're a cagey boy, Mr.
- 37:29Speaker 8: Holmes.
- 37:30Speaker 3: But you swallowed.
- 37:31Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 37:44Speaker 6: Over here in the booth.
- 37:46Speaker 5: Good evening, Mr.
- 37:47Speaker 7: Holmes.
- 37:48Speaker 6: Good evening.
- 37:49Speaker 3: Sit down, won't you?
- 37:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I will.
- 37:53Speaker 6: You're right on time.
- 37:54Speaker 8: Sure.
- 37:55Speaker 5: Sure. So are you.
- 37:57Speaker 3: Here's a drink for you. I had water ahead, so
- 38:01Speaker 3: I'd be allowed to stay in here. It's past closing time.
- 38:04Speaker 6: Thanks. What's the matter, son? Nothing.
- 38:10Speaker 5: It'd just be funny, that's all. Funny and kind of
- 38:15Speaker 5: corny if you'd slipped a little something into this.
- 38:19Speaker 3: Take mine, then.
- 38:21Speaker 5: I haven't put it to my mouth yet. I think
- 38:24Speaker 5: I will.
- 38:24Speaker 8: Huh?
- 38:26Speaker 5: Bottoms up.
- 38:28Speaker 3: Bottoms up. My car's around the corner. Would you rather
- 38:36Speaker 3: talk about it there?
- 38:37Speaker 6: Yeah, I would.
- 38:39Speaker 5: I think we ought to be alone.
- 38:41Speaker 6: That's easy, son. We can be alone.
- 38:56Speaker 5: That's enough driving.
- 38:57Speaker 7: Pull up.
- 38:58Speaker 3: I just thought we'd coast a bit. We can't sit
- 39:01Speaker 3: talking at the curb at this hour. We'll have a
- 39:03Speaker 3: cop down on us sticking his nose into the car.
- 39:05Speaker 3: What's wrong with that?
- 39:08Speaker 6: I don't know. Do you?
- 39:11Speaker 5: I was asking you.
- 39:12Speaker 6: However, if you want to pull up....
- 39:21Speaker 3: The East River. A mighty mysterious place at this time
- 39:25Speaker 3: of day. You're pretty close to the edge, aren't you?
- 39:28Speaker 3: The wheels are blocked. You're not nervous, are you?
- 39:33Speaker 5: No, I'm not.
- 39:36Speaker 3: Now, about that check.
- 39:38Speaker 5: I didn't find that check in a cab, Mr.
- 39:40Speaker 8: Holmes.
- 39:41Speaker 5: I found it in Stephen Graves' house, where he's lying
- 39:46Speaker 5: right now on the floor, dead.
- 39:49Speaker 3: Stephen dead?
- 39:50Speaker 5: And your cigar is still in the room with him,
- 39:52Speaker 5: chewed to a pop. A Corona, like the one you're
- 39:55Speaker 5: smoking right now. You should have taken it with you, Mr. Holmes,
- 40:00Speaker 5: after you'd killed him.
- 40:02Speaker 3: You seem to know a good deal about this.
- 40:05Speaker 6: A little.
- 40:06Speaker 5: Just enough to know who the killer is.
- 40:08Speaker 3: I feel a little sorry for you. I didn't know
- 40:14Speaker 3: you were as young as you are over the phone.
- 40:19Speaker 5: What have I... What have I got to do with it?
- 40:23Speaker 3: You're having a lot of trouble with your eyes, aren't you?
- 40:26Speaker 3: Lights on the dashboard have got rings around them, haven't they?
- 40:29Speaker 3: Like big soap bubbles.
- 40:32Speaker 5: What are you talking about?
- 40:33Speaker 3: Say, you talk too much. You've talked yourself into the grave.
- 40:39Speaker 3: I would have believed you about finding that check in
- 40:41Speaker 3: a taxi. You would have gone to sleep in the car,
- 40:44Speaker 3: and when you woke up, you wouldn't have the check
- 40:47Speaker 3: on you anymore. But you'd have had a $ 10 bill
- 40:49Speaker 3: in your pocket, too. Sugarcoat the experience. Head weighs too much,
- 40:55Speaker 3: doesn't it? Too heavy for your neck.
- 40:57Speaker 6: My head.
- 40:58Speaker 3: You should have stuck to your own drink, son. You
- 41:01Speaker 3: were suspicious, but not suspicious enough. You took the wrong glass. Me,
- 41:09Speaker 3: I'm a chess player. You know what chess is? It's
- 41:13Speaker 3: figuring out your opponent's move before he makes it.
- 41:17Speaker 5: It's a funny thing. The way my head's Like a
- 41:22Speaker 5: solid rock.
- 41:24Speaker 3: You're going to sleep here in the car. Then you're
- 41:28Speaker 3: going into the river without a mark on you. But
- 41:31Speaker 3: I'll take the check before I dump you. It's probably
- 41:34Speaker 3: in your shoe. It's about where your type of youngster
- 41:37Speaker 3: would think was a clever hiding place for it.
- 41:39Speaker 5: Just clear my head. And then kick. Kick.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Trying to kick out the glass, son?
- 41:50Speaker 5: No.
- 41:51Speaker 3: You haven't the strength of a kick left in you. No,
- 41:55Speaker 3: it's all over. That's water in front of us. That
- 42:00Speaker 3: even black line you see. Right over the hubcap. You
- 42:07Speaker 3: can't even move, can you? That's right. Make a lazy
- 42:12Speaker 3: pass with your hand like you're brushing away flies. That's
- 42:15Speaker 3: about all you're able to do. In a minute... You
- 42:20Speaker 3: won't even be able to do that. There go your eyes. Down, down, down.
- 42:33Speaker 5: You won't get away with this, mister. Bricky knows. There
- 42:37Speaker 5: are two of us. Not just one.
- 42:40Speaker 8: The End.
- 42:51Speaker 2: And so I walked away from Quinn, and I was
- 42:54Speaker 2: alone again. I'd met him only a few hours before,
- 42:59Speaker 2: and with him I'd met my past and my home
- 43:01Speaker 2: and everything I loved and wanted. And now I was
- 43:06Speaker 2: alone again. Somewhere in this sleeping city, Quinn was after
- 43:11Speaker 2: his man, and I was after my woman, my redhead,
- 43:17Speaker 2: my long-stemmed American beauty. The nightclub parakeet was dead. Dead,
- 43:24Speaker 2: but not quite cold. Just in the process of giving
- 43:28Speaker 2: up the ghost. Every other minute, a solitary figure would
- 43:32Speaker 2: come out and walk away. Someone who earned a living inside.
- 43:37Speaker 2: This was the five o'clock in the afternoon of the
- 43:39Speaker 2: nightclub workers, whose clock goes in the opposite direction to
- 43:43Speaker 2: that of the rest of the world. And what did
- 43:46Speaker 2: I have to go on? A redhead blackmailer, who had
- 43:50Speaker 2: quickly scribbled a note to a man. And that kind
- 43:53Speaker 2: of woman doesn't ordinarily carry around pencil and paper in
- 43:56Speaker 2: her purse. She sends messages with her eyes and her hips.
- 44:02Speaker 2: If she wants a pencil, she's got to borrow.
- 44:04Speaker 5: It from the help.
- 44:08Speaker 2: Excuse me.
- 44:08Speaker 3: Huh?
- 44:10Speaker 2: What's the matter? You work here, don't you? I'm in
- 44:12Speaker 2: the check room till something better turns up.
- 44:13Speaker 7: Why?
- 44:14Speaker 2: Well, I wondered, did my friend in a light green dress,
- 44:17Speaker 2: a redhead, did she borrow a pencil from you tonight?
- 44:19Speaker 2: It works the other way around, honey. The men take
- 44:22Speaker 2: out their pencils and give me names and addresses and
- 44:24Speaker 2: telephone numbers.
- 44:25Speaker 7: I got a fistful.
- 44:25Speaker 2: But didn't a woman... It's no dice, honey.
- 44:28Speaker 7: I don't even see any women in my stall.
- 44:30Speaker 6: Oh.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Another long day.
- 44:36Speaker 2: My feet swell up all the time.
- 44:38Speaker 5: You want to try Epsom salts? Water as hot as
- 44:40Speaker 5: you can stand.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Excuse me.
- 44:41Speaker 5: Well, my name's Jerry. But don't let the name stand
- 44:45Speaker 5: in your way.
- 44:46Speaker 2: I'm looking for my friend, a redhead in a light
- 44:49Speaker 2: green dress. Did she borrow a pencil from you tonight?
- 44:52Speaker 5: Not at my end of the bar. How about it, Frank? Sure,
- 44:54Speaker 5: Joan Bassett.
- 44:55Speaker 2: About midnight.
- 44:57Speaker 1: She's always borrowing something and forgetting to give it back.
- 45:01Speaker 2: How that girl forgets. That's the way Joanie is. Do you...
- 45:04Speaker 2: Do you know where I can find her?
- 45:06Speaker 5: Well, try the Concord.
- 45:08Speaker 4: That was the last address.
- 45:10Speaker 2: But she's probably moved by now. Thanks, fellas.
- 45:13Speaker 5: Can't I do anything for you?
- 45:15Speaker 2: Another time, Jerry. Okay, that's a promise.
- 45:18Speaker 3: Another time.
- 45:29Speaker 2: What can I do for you? Be friendly, Pop. Say hello.
- 45:33Speaker 6: You know.
- 45:34Speaker 2: That's better.
- 45:34Speaker 3: What do you want, a room?
- 45:36Speaker 6: Are we full up?
- 45:37Speaker 2: What room's my girlfriend got? I want to run up
- 45:39Speaker 2: and tell her something. You know, Joanie.
- 45:41Speaker 3: Joan Bassett?
- 45:42Speaker 2: Yeah, Joan Bassett. Only we don't have to be so formal.
- 45:45Speaker 3: She's in 409, sugar. Hey, wait a minute. I'll try it.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Oh, skip that. She don't have to put on no
- 45:49Speaker 2: ears with me. Who's she kidding? I know she's two
- 45:51Speaker 2: weeks behind no rent. All right.
- 45:53Speaker 3: If you know that well, going up.
- 46:13Speaker 2: What do you want? You. I want to talk to you.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 46:18Speaker 2: Well, just stand out there a minute and tell me
- 46:19Speaker 2: what about. We got a friend in common.
- 46:21Speaker 7: You and I.
- 46:22Speaker 3: It's possible.
- 46:24Speaker 7: Go on.
- 46:25Speaker 2: This friend's name is Stephen Graves. Um, suppose you come
- 46:31Speaker 2: in a minute. I'll hear what's on your mind.
- 46:33Speaker 5: Sure.
- 46:34Speaker 2: I thought that might do it. Do you have to
- 46:38Speaker 2: lock the door? Yeah, I think I do. Whatever you
- 46:41Speaker 2: think best. Begin with your name. You can put me
- 46:44Speaker 2: down as Carolyn Miller. All right, Carolyn Miller. Now about
- 46:49Speaker 2: Stephen Graves. What makes you think I know him? Stop
- 46:52Speaker 2: being polite. You know him. Did he mention me to you? No.
- 46:56Speaker 2: He wasn't doing any mentioning of anybody. He wasn't doing anything.
- 47:00Speaker 2: You been over to see him lately? Very lately. I
- 47:05Speaker 2: just came from there now. How did you find him?
- 47:10Speaker 2: I found him dead.
- 47:13Speaker 5: See.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Oh, that tap in the kitchen is loose again. Excuse
- 47:19Speaker 2: me a minute while I tighten it. I'd known we
- 47:25Speaker 2: weren't alone the moment I came into that room. And
- 47:28Speaker 2: I knew that faucet in the kitchen was a signal
- 47:29Speaker 2: for a quick conference. It was my chance. Maybe I
- 47:32Speaker 2: had a minute, maybe only 30 seconds. There was only
- 47:35Speaker 2: time for one thing, the open handbag on the dresser.
- 47:38Speaker 2: Nothing there.
- 47:39Speaker 7: Lipstick.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Powder usual junk and then an unpaid hotel bill for $ 17. 89
- 47:47Speaker 2: from this place the Concord no good worthless and my
- 47:49Speaker 2: time was up yet something screamed at me to hold
- 47:53Speaker 2: on to it to slip it inside my stocking high
- 47:55Speaker 2: up and to get back into my chair well that's
- 48:01Speaker 2: done now where were we with Stephen Graves oh yeah
- 48:06Speaker 2: did you go up there alone or did you have
- 48:09Speaker 2: somebody with you alone I don't take my grandmother with
- 48:12Speaker 2: me when I'm visiting. I see. Somebody stop you at
- 48:15Speaker 2: the door and tell you? Is that how you found out?
- 48:17Speaker 2: Cops and people hanging around? Lots of excitement? No one
- 48:19Speaker 2: knows it. I found him alone. I had a key
- 48:22Speaker 2: to the house that he'd given me. I went up
- 48:25Speaker 2: and there he was. Dead. What'd you do? Holler bloody
- 48:29Speaker 2: murder and bring everyone down on the place? I got
- 48:31Speaker 2: out of there fast and quiet. I don't want to
- 48:33Speaker 2: be mixed up in it. Smart girl. And all this
- 48:37Speaker 2: happened just a little while ago, huh? Yeah. Nobody knows
- 48:39Speaker 2: yet but you? Me?
- 48:42Speaker 5: And you?
- 48:43Speaker 2: Did you come here alone?
- 48:44Speaker 7: All alone.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Everything I do, I do alone. I guess I've hit
- 48:49Speaker 2: the jackpot.
- 48:51Speaker 5: Yeah, you sure have, baby.
- 48:53Speaker 2: You've hit it hard. Make it tight, Griff, so she
- 48:57Speaker 2: can't make any noise.
- 48:57Speaker 3: It's tight. Don't worry about that.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Well, Miss Carolyn Miller, you're in trouble now.
- 49:02Speaker 3: You tell her.
- 49:03Speaker 2: So Stephen Graves is dead and you felt a little
- 49:05Speaker 2: nosy about it, huh? You wanted the details. All right,
- 49:09Speaker 2: you can have them. You seemed to have known him
- 49:11Speaker 2: pretty well. Maybe he told you, did he? Did he
- 49:13Speaker 2: tell you about his kid brother who married a tavern
- 49:15Speaker 2: hostess back in Boston? Did he tell you what that
- 49:18Speaker 2: did to the fine old family? name when this girl
- 49:20Speaker 2: began asking for money? When she came to New York
- 49:22Speaker 2: and began asking Stephen for money? Did he tell you
- 49:25Speaker 2: that he paid and paid and finally decided to stop
- 49:28Speaker 2: paying so this girl and her friend had to pay
- 49:30Speaker 2: him a little visit tonight to try to persuade him?
- 49:32Speaker 3: Did he tell you that?
- 49:34Speaker 2: Did he tell you what happened when he couldn't be persuaded?
- 49:40Speaker 7: No.
- 49:41Speaker 2: No, he didn't tell you that. Because he wasn't talking
- 49:44Speaker 2: by then. By then he was dead.
- 49:47Speaker 3: That's enough. You want to spend the night at it?
- 49:49Speaker 2: All right. Well, what's the play now?
- 49:52Speaker 3: Don't you figure we ought to... No, not.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Here in the room. That's begging for it.
- 49:56Speaker 4: You don't understand. I don't mean chop-chop, that kind of stuff.
- 49:58Speaker 4: I mean, we're four flights up. That ought to be enough.
- 50:02Speaker 4: The three of us get to drinking up here. She
- 50:03Speaker 4: goes over to the window to try to open it
- 50:05Speaker 4: for a little air, and it jams.
- 50:07Speaker 3: So she's got to push it.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Oh, there's always a follow-up. It's a little messy.
- 50:11Speaker 3: Let me take care of this.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Yeah, like you took care of the other when I
- 50:14Speaker 2: told you just to throw a scare into him so
- 50:15Speaker 2: he'd come across.
- 50:17Speaker 3: Huh.
- 50:17Speaker 2: Well, some scare you threw at him, Griff.
- 50:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I scared him right out of his skin, right out.
- 50:22Speaker 6: Of his heart.
- 50:22Speaker 2: I don't want you to be so impulsive this time.
- 50:24Speaker 3: Well, then let's blow.
- 50:24Speaker 4: We'll stuff her in the closet, backs up against a
- 50:28Speaker 4: dead wall so she'll never be heard.
- 50:30Speaker 3: It'll be days before they get around to busting the
- 50:31Speaker 3: door down.
- 50:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll be far away by then.
- 50:33Speaker 6: Yeah, far away.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Okay, I can pack in ten minutes.
- 50:36Speaker 3: Unless I'll give you a hand.
- 50:37Speaker 7: Hey, what.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Wait a minute. I'm missing that hotel bill. It must
- 50:41Speaker 2: have fallen somewhere on the floor.
- 50:42Speaker 3: Don't worry about that. He can make up a new
- 50:44Speaker 3: one for you down at the desk.
- 50:45Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, sure.
- 50:45Speaker 2: That's right.
- 50:46Speaker 3: Well, shall we get her out of the way first?
- 50:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Hang Carolyn Miller in the closet.
- 50:54Speaker 6: See, Daisy.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Make her comfortable, Griff.
- 50:57Speaker 6: Sure.
- 50:57Speaker 2: We want to be extra nice to her because there's
- 50:59Speaker 2: a little fresh air in there.
- 51:01Speaker 5: There'll only be a minute.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Griff!
- 51:02Speaker 3: What's the matter?
- 51:03Speaker 7: Put her down.
- 51:04Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 51:04Speaker 2: Put her down, quick! I ought to have my head examined.
- 51:07Speaker 3: You mean you slipped on something?
- 51:08Speaker 2: Yeah, forgot. We both clean forgot. What was it tipped
- 51:12Speaker 2: her off to me? She didn't pull my name and
- 51:14Speaker 2: address out of a hat.
- 51:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Get that gag off her. You try to scream and
- 51:19Speaker 2: I'll dent you. I won't scream. Now talk. How'd you
- 51:24Speaker 2: know I knew him? How'd you know where to find me?
- 51:26Speaker 2: I'm going to let you have it and I'm going
- 51:28Speaker 2: to keep letting you have it until you answer. You
- 51:32Speaker 2: dropped your hotel bill over there. I found it lying
- 51:36Speaker 2: in the room with him.
- 51:37Speaker 3: I ought to slap you down to the soles of
- 51:39Speaker 3: your feet.
- 51:39Speaker 5: You left your calling card.
- 51:40Speaker 3: That's what you did.
- 51:41Speaker 2: No, she's lying. I swear I saw it in my
- 51:42Speaker 2: handbag after I got back.
- 51:43Speaker 3: Did you take it out to show him? Answer me,
- 51:45Speaker 3: did you?
- 51:46Speaker 7: Sure.
- 51:47Speaker 2: While you were waiting downstairs, it was part of the
- 51:49Speaker 2: build-up to show him how bad I needed money, but
- 51:52Speaker 2: I know I put it back again.
- 51:53Speaker 3: You think you know.
- 51:54Speaker 6: Well, I.
- 51:55Speaker 2: Oh, I'm almost positive. It fell out. It was for $ 17.
- 51:58Speaker 8: 89.
- 51:58Speaker 2: It had past due stamped on it in purple ink.
- 52:05Speaker 2: It even had your room number on it.
- 52:06Speaker 3: And what did you do with it? Did you bring
- 52:08Speaker 3: it with you?
- 52:08Speaker 2: I left it where it was. I was afraid to
- 52:12Speaker 2: touch anything.
- 52:15Speaker 3: We'll have to go back and get it.
- 52:17Speaker 2: All right, we will. We'll take her with us. Fix
- 52:21Speaker 2: it to look like she did it to him. What
- 52:23Speaker 2: you want to do in the first place, Griff, why
- 52:25Speaker 2: don't you do it over there? Give him a double
- 52:28Speaker 2: header to figure out.
- 52:29Speaker 4: Maybe.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Oh, it's the only way. Rub out this detour by
- 52:32Speaker 2: finishing her off where she started from.
- 52:34Speaker 6: All right. Come on, Carolyn Miller.
- 52:38Speaker 9: We're going for a little ride.
- 52:51Speaker 2: And so I went back into Stephen Graves' house for
- 52:54Speaker 2: the second time that night. They pushed me ahead of
- 52:57Speaker 2: them in the darkness, whispering to each other not to
- 53:00Speaker 2: use any lights yet, just as Quinn and I had
- 53:03Speaker 2: done a few hours before. Or was it a few
- 53:06Speaker 2: years before? Then we were in the study and the
- 53:11Speaker 2: lights were snapped on and the dead man was still
- 53:14Speaker 2: on the floor and nobody stepped forward to say, Bricky,
- 53:20Speaker 2: is that you?
- 53:22Speaker 8: No.
- 53:23Speaker 2: He wasn't there. Quinn wasn't there waiting to help me,
- 53:29Speaker 2: to save me.
- 53:30Speaker 4: Let's do what we have to do and get out fast.
- 53:32Speaker 2: No, not yet. Something else first.
- 53:38Speaker 7: Well, you.
- 53:40Speaker 2: Where is it? Where's that hotel bill? Where'd you say
- 53:44Speaker 2: you saw it? Over there by him is where I said.
- 53:50Speaker 2: And you believed me. Then you didn't. You lied.
- 53:54Speaker 3: I lied.
- 53:57Speaker 6: Where is it?
- 53:58Speaker 5: Where have you got it?
- 53:59Speaker 2: That's your little problem.
- 54:02Speaker 3: Let me have that gun. I'll do it.
- 54:05Speaker 2: Here it is, Griff.
- 54:06Speaker 3: Get away from her.
- 54:07Speaker 6: Move over.
- 54:08Speaker 4: Stand still, Carolyn Miller. I want to come real close.
- 54:14Speaker 4: I want them to worry about whether it's suicide.
- 54:17Speaker 2: Yes, Griff. I'll stand still.
- 54:23Speaker 3: Good girl, Carolyn. Good girl.
- 54:31Speaker 2: It didn't hurt. It didn't hurt at all. And I
- 54:35Speaker 2: opened my eyes to find out why. Griff stood in
- 54:38Speaker 2: the middle of the room, his face contorted, an arm
- 54:40Speaker 2: squeezing hard around his neck, and behind his face was
- 54:43Speaker 2: another face, a face I knew, Quinn's face, the boy
- 54:46Speaker 2: next door, fighting for me, fighting to save me. Then
- 54:49Speaker 2: Quinn went down, all lopsided, and Quinn was on top,
- 54:52Speaker 2: punching at it again and again, and Joan was racing
- 54:55Speaker 2: across the room with an end eye and raising her hand.
- 54:57Speaker 2: I never played football as a little girl, but on
- 54:59Speaker 2: this night I decided it was time to try.
- 55:18Speaker 6: Ricky.
- 55:19Speaker 5: Ricky, darling. Quinn. Are you all right?
- 55:25Speaker 2: Somebody's ringing church bells in my head.
- 55:27Speaker 5: Oh, you knocked yourself out with that flying tackle.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Quinn. Quinn, what happened? Are they....
- 55:34Speaker 4: Oh.
- 55:35Speaker 5: Yeah, they're both asleep, Ricky. As sound as can be.
- 55:39Speaker 2: I see you've wrapped them up nicely.
- 55:43Speaker 5: Yeah, I had to tear up a few good sheets
- 55:45Speaker 5: to do it, but I don't think Mr. Graves would
- 55:47Speaker 5: have minded.
- 55:48Speaker 2: I'd given up, Quinn. I thought I'd beat you back here,
- 55:52Speaker 2: and I'd given up.
- 55:55Speaker 3: Oh, Bricky.
- 55:58Speaker 5: I saw them coming in with you outside on the street.
- 56:00Speaker 5: I was watching from one of the front windows. And
- 56:03Speaker 5: something about the way you were walking between them, sort
- 56:05Speaker 5: of stiff, told me they had a gun on you.
- 56:08Speaker 5: So I backed up into the bathroom and laid low.
- 56:10Speaker 2: They're the ones, Quinn. They did it.
- 56:12Speaker 6: I know.
- 56:13Speaker 2: And we can go now. It's a quarter to six.
- 56:16Speaker 2: We can catch that bus for home.
- 56:18Speaker 5: There's one more thing to be done, Ricky. It'll only
- 56:21Speaker 5: take a minute. And then you and I aren't going
- 56:26Speaker 5: to have any more to worry about. Is this the police?
- 56:33Speaker 6: I want to report a murder. Oh, Quinn.
- 56:36Speaker 5: Stephen Graves, in his home on East 71st Street. There
- 56:40Speaker 5: are two people tied up in the same room with
- 56:41Speaker 5: the body, and they're the killers. You'll find a special
- 56:44Speaker 5: delivery letter in the desk from Graves' younger brother, and
- 56:47Speaker 5: that'll tell you the reason for the killing.
- 56:50Speaker 2: What?
- 56:51Speaker 5: No, this isn't any rib. I wish it was.
- 56:57Speaker 9: Me?
- 56:58Speaker 5: Just a guy who happened to be passing by.
- 57:01Speaker 2: We can take their car. He left his keys in it.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Come on, Quinn, hurry.
- 57:04Speaker 8: Come on.
- 57:18Speaker 6: We'll make it.
- 57:19Speaker 3: Don't you worry, Bricky.
- 57:21Speaker 7: I'm not worried.
- 57:22Speaker 2: I know we will. What happened to you tonight? Did
- 57:26Speaker 2: you find Holmes?
- 57:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 57:28Speaker 2: And?
- 57:29Speaker 5: And he tried to kill me.
- 57:30Speaker 6: When?
- 57:31Speaker 5: It was your name that saved me, Bricky. I called
- 57:34Speaker 5: out your name. I told him you were in on
- 57:36Speaker 5: this with me. And he changed his mind in a hurry.
- 57:40Speaker 2: Then we saved each other.
- 57:42Speaker 3: That's right.
- 57:44Speaker 7: What about the check?
- 57:44Speaker 2: How did it figure?
- 57:46Speaker 5: Well, Holmes was caught short when he wrote that check.
- 57:48Speaker 5: And Graves got sore when the bank returned it. They
- 57:51Speaker 5: talked it over tonight, and it ended up with Graves
- 57:53Speaker 5: giving him another day to raise the money. The reason
- 57:56Speaker 5: Holmes was so jittery was that the check seemed to
- 57:58Speaker 5: have disappeared. He didn't know what.
- 58:00Speaker 3: Graves might be pulling.
- 58:01Speaker 5: And of course, Graves wasn't pulling anything with that check
- 58:04Speaker 5: lying in the bottom of his bathtub.
- 58:06Speaker 2: You told Holmes how it got there? Yeah.
- 58:09Speaker 5: And look what I've got.
- 58:10Speaker 2: Two hundred dollar....
- 58:14Speaker 6: Quinn!
- 58:16Speaker 5: No, I didn't steal it. After he decided he wouldn't
- 58:19Speaker 5: kill me, Holmes and I got very chummy. He said
- 58:23Speaker 5: we'd both made a mistake in the same night. Me
- 58:27Speaker 5: breaking into a safe and him with his bad check.
- 58:30Speaker 5: He'd slipped me a pill earlier in the evening, and
- 58:32Speaker 5: now he was walking me around to sober me up.
- 58:35Speaker 5: That's when he gave me the money. A nest egg
- 58:38Speaker 5: for me, he said. I could send it back to
- 58:40Speaker 5: him a little at a time later on.
- 58:42Speaker 2: We'll send it back, Quinn.
- 58:45Speaker 6: We, Bricky?
- 58:46Speaker 2: We're in this together.
- 58:47Speaker 3: Aren't we? Yes, Bricky, we are.
- 58:50Speaker 2: Oh, look, Quinn. We made it. We're in time. The
- 58:54Speaker 2: bus is still there.
- 58:55Speaker 5: Come on, Bricky. Let's go on home.
