Vermont’s farmers are finally getting the housing help they’ve long needed—thanks to a state program that’s poured over $5.6 million into fixing worker housing. At Champlain Orchards, Bill Suhr used a $30K loan to add bathrooms, upgrade wiring, and install safety features, transforming cramped, unsafe conditions into something workers now call “significantly better.” But with 20 more workers to house and rising needs—including more women and kids on farms—advocates say more funding is urgently needed to close the gap and ensure every farmworker has a safe, dignified place to live.
