- 0:32Great to have your company. You might be one of those people
- 0:35that life is busy and you sometimes find a chance in the
- 0:39day to sneak a chapter in. In which case, we're so glad you
- 0:43found time today. Welcome.
- 0:45Or you might be a die hard where you and I do this every day
- 0:48together. But all of that is entirely
- 0:51academic, because here we are, and today we are going to do
- 0:55just that. We're going to read the next
- 0:57chapter of the book of Second Samuel, where we are hearing all
- 1:01about the intrigue and the tussles of power as David and
- 1:06his supporters are trying to take the throne not just of
- 1:09Judah but of the whole of Israel.
- 1:11But it is not a straightforward process.
- 1:14So, Holy Spirit, in the midst of all of this toing and froing and
- 1:19fighting and power struggles, we just pray that Your Voice would
- 1:25speak to us to reveal something of you so that we can learn more
- 1:31about you and live as your disciples the way you would call
- 1:35us to. All right, friend, you're ready.
- 1:39Let us do this together. Read together.
- 1:42Second Samuel, Chapter 4. When Ishbosheth Soul Son heard
- 1:57about Abner's death at Hebron, he lost all courage and all
- 2:02Israel became paralysed with fear.
- 2:05Now there were two brothers, Bahner and Recab, who were
- 2:09captains of Ishbosheth's raiding parties.
- 2:12They were sons of Rimon, a member of the tribe of Benjamin
- 2:15who lived in Beeroth. The town of Beeroth is now part
- 2:19of Benjamin's territory because the original people of Beeroth
- 2:23fled to Gitam, where they still live as foreigners.
- 2:27Soul son Jonathan had a son named Mephibosheth who was
- 2:31crippled as a child. He was five years old when the
- 2:35report came from Jezreel that Saul and Jonathan had been
- 2:38killed in battle. When the child's nurse heard the
- 2:41news, she picked him up and fled.
- 2:44But as she hurried away, she dropped him, and he became
- 2:48crippled. One day Recab and Baanah, the
- 2:52sons of Rimon from Beeroth, went to Ishbosheth's house around
- 2:57noon. As he was taking his midday
- 2:58rest, the doorkeeper, who had been sifting wheat, became
- 3:02drowsy and fell asleep, so Recab and Banner slipped past her.
- 3:08They went into the house and found Ishbosheth sleeping on his
- 3:11bed. They struck and killed him and
- 3:15cut off his head. Then, taking his head with them,
- 3:19they fled across the Jordan Valley through the night.
- 3:22When they arrived at Hebron, they presented Ishbosheth's head
- 3:26to David's Look. They exclaimed to the king.
- 3:29Here is the head of Ishbosheth, the son of your enemy soul, who
- 3:33tried to kill you. Today the Lord has given my Lord
- 3:37the King revenge on Saul and his entire family.
- 3:41But David said to rechab and banner.
- 3:44The Lord who saved me from all my enemies is my witness.
- 3:49Someone once told me Saul is dead, thinking it was bringing
- 3:53me good news, But I seized him and killed him at Ziklag.
- 3:58That's a reward I gave him for his news.
- 4:00How much more should I reward evil men who have killed an
- 4:04innocent man in his own house and on his own bed?
- 4:09Shouldn't I hold you responsible for his blood and rid the earth
- 4:13of you? So David ordered his young men
- 4:16to kill them, and they did. They cut off their heads and
- 4:20feet and hung their bodies beside the pool in Hebron.
- 4:24Then they took Ishbosheth's head and buried it in Abner's tomb in
- 4:29Hebron. Lord, here we see David's heart.
- 4:43Even in the midst of these power struggles and battles, we see
- 4:48that he still trusts you to bring about justice and does not
- 4:54tolerate any of his own men taking matters into their own
- 4:57hands. Lord, help us be the same way.
- 5:03Help us. Just rest in you and your
- 5:06Lordship over our life. And when we feel like we just
- 5:11have to act because we just can't wait for your timing, give
- 5:15us patience, Lord, lift up our eyes from the noisy factors that
- 5:21dwell in front of us so that we can look to you and see your
- 5:26throne sitting over all and know that in your hands you hold
- 5:30everything. You are a mighty, just and
- 5:36loving God who acts in our interest and the interest of
- 5:40your beloved children. That's us.
- 5:44So we thank you and we praise you, and we give all authority
- 5:48in kingship to you. Let me probably all of this in
- 5:54Jesus name. Amen.
