Latest / Best of the NFL Podcast Network / The Season with Peter Schrager: Week 1 Reactions & Brian Hoyer
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Scheger is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome to
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Season with Peter Schrager. I'm sitting here covered in
- 0:28Speaker 1: egg all over my face. I've got crow in my mouth.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Last night was a shell lacking of epic proportions. Yes,
- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm recording this on a Tuesday morning, and I'm trying
- 0:39Speaker 1: not to be knee jerk guy. But after I spent
- 0:42Speaker 1: an entire summer on every major podcast, including this one
- 0:46Speaker 1: and a national television show, waxing poetic on the New
- 0:49Speaker 1: York Jets being a one seed in the AFC and
- 0:53Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers being an MVP, they got the snot kicked
- 0:58Speaker 1: out of them. I have this weird internal dialogue, and
- 1:03Speaker 1: the internal dialogue starts with fear because the Jets are
- 1:08Speaker 1: supposed to be one of these teams that prides themselves
- 1:10Speaker 1: on their defense. Where last year with seven wins, they
- 1:15Speaker 1: still managed seven wins despite unspeakably bad quarterback play between
- 1:21Speaker 1: Trevor Simmey and Tim Boyle, Zach Wilson and whoever else,
- 1:25Speaker 1: and the year before they won a bunch of games
- 1:26Speaker 1: with Chris Streveler and the motley crew that they had
- 1:30Speaker 1: backing up Zach Wilson with a Joe Flacco that was
- 1:34Speaker 1: not the version we saw last year in Cleveland. I'm like,
- 1:36Speaker 1: if they won those games there and they added to
- 1:39Speaker 1: the offensive line, which, by the way, last year suited
- 1:41Speaker 1: up twenty different players and had thirteen different combinations, surely
- 1:46Speaker 1: they're gonna be much improved because the defense is so
- 1:48Speaker 1: dan good. Last night, the defense was awful. They couldn't
- 1:54Speaker 1: stop anything. Jordan Mason is an undrafted player at a
- 2:01Speaker 1: Georgia Tech. He's been with the Niners for a couple
- 2:03Speaker 1: of years. But when Christian McCaffrey's ruled inactive, of people
- 2:07Speaker 1: fantasy football fans aside, who are like, oh my gosh,
- 2:10Speaker 1: the Jets have this thing in the bag because mccaffery's everything.
- 2:14Speaker 1: For Jordan Mason to go twenty eight carries for one
- 2:18Speaker 1: hundred and forty nine yards in a touchdown right up
- 2:22Speaker 1: the gut on a defense that prides itself on its
- 2:24Speaker 1: front seven. All I heard about this summer was how
- 2:27Speaker 1: they didn't need Hassan Reddick necessarily. It was a nice
- 2:29Speaker 1: to have, not a must have, because they were so
- 2:33Speaker 1: loaded in the front seven. Think about their roster as
- 2:35Speaker 1: a whole. You're talking about Quinn Williams, who's an All Pro.
- 2:40Speaker 1: You're talking about Quincy Williams's brother, who's an All Pro.
- 2:42Speaker 1: You're talking about first round picks up and down the roster,
- 2:45Speaker 1: whether it be Will McDonald or it be Jermaine Johnson,
- 2:50Speaker 1: or in the last couple of years, you've had guys
- 2:53Speaker 1: who've been joining the team like Tac McKinley or Javon
- 2:56Speaker 1: Kinlaw and then Moseley's a first round pick. I mean,
- 2:59Speaker 1: the front seven is supposed to be the strength of
- 3:02Speaker 1: the team and they were man handled last night. So
- 3:05Speaker 1: my immediate reaction is, look at time of possession, look
- 3:08Speaker 1: at the rushing yards, Look at the way on third
- 3:11Speaker 1: down the Jets defense couldn't get the Niners off the field.
- 3:14Speaker 1: In my imedy reaction, it's like they're not competing with
- 3:17Speaker 1: the Chiefs and the Ravens this year. That team isn't.
- 3:20Speaker 1: They're not. They might win eight games, they might take
- 3:24Speaker 1: care of business against some inferior part they're not. They're
- 3:27Speaker 1: not beating the Chiefs of the Ravens. They're certainly not
- 3:29Speaker 1: gonna beat any of the AFC East teams. If they're
- 3:33Speaker 1: in full swing, like they're not going out there and
- 3:35Speaker 1: you're gonna sweep the Bills and the Dolphins, which is
- 3:37Speaker 1: what it would take to be the one seed. So
- 3:38Speaker 1: I feel foolish, I feel dumb. I feel like I
- 3:40Speaker 1: led you on. I feel like I did their preseason
- 3:43Speaker 1: game and went to a few practices and got and
- 3:45Speaker 1: got duped. And then I then I take a sober
- 3:49Speaker 1: moment and I'm like, well, Rogers looked pretty good when
- 3:53Speaker 1: he had an opportunity to throw the ball. Garrett Wilson
- 3:56Speaker 1: looked damn good. Lazard got a few touches after the
- 3:59Speaker 1: initial drop in the first series, and Lazard looked all right,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and the offensive line kept Aaron Rodgers upright. And oh yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 1: by the way, the forty nine ers are absolutely loaded.
- 4:09Speaker 1: They just played the defending NFC champions, who are pissed
- 4:12Speaker 1: they lost the Super Bowl, and they played them in
- 4:14Speaker 1: their building after a week of build up with everyone
- 4:18Speaker 1: else playing, and it was like they just unloaded on them.
- 4:22Speaker 1: So the Jets play the Titans on Sunday in Nashville.
- 4:26Speaker 1: The Titans, who their head coach, Brian Callahan, I think
- 4:29Speaker 1: had the quote of the year when he was basically
- 4:31Speaker 1: like if we just took every first down and punted it,
- 4:34Speaker 1: we would have won this game. Like that's how down
- 4:36Speaker 1: he was about how the offense performed, and he's an
- 4:39Speaker 1: offensive coach, Like they should beat the Titans, and then
- 4:44Speaker 1: they have a short week and they've got a Patriots
- 4:46Speaker 1: team though, want to know, are rather untested, and we're
- 4:49Speaker 1: not supposed to be world beaters this year. They should
- 4:51Speaker 1: beat them too. So three games in ten days, it's
- 4:54Speaker 1: a big ask. And yet, as much as I want
- 4:57Speaker 1: to fly off the handle and Jets fans, I hear you,
- 4:59Speaker 1: you're listening, I'm trying to be more rational here. They
- 5:03Speaker 1: could be two in one heading into October and then
- 5:06Speaker 1: we're like, all right, all is good and we're okay
- 5:09Speaker 1: the other team across town. I have no positive things
- 5:12Speaker 1: to say. Again, really fell for this Giants one hundred thing.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Thought it was awesome. Thought it was going to add
- 5:18Speaker 1: some mystique to this opening week, that the fans are
- 5:21Speaker 1: going to be in a fervor and they're on the
- 5:23Speaker 1: least in these new uniforms. You've got lt in the building,
- 5:26Speaker 1: you got Sims in the building, You've got Kaughlin, gosh,
- 5:30Speaker 1: you've got Bill parcels in the building. You're honoring all
- 5:32Speaker 1: these people. You got the NFL to give you a
- 5:35Speaker 1: one o'clock start against a Vikings team. Now, I don't
- 5:37Speaker 1: think anybody really thinks is going to Super Bowl this year.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And they lost. They look terrible, and so much so
- 5:42Speaker 1: that Daniel Jones is getting booed at the end of
- 5:45Speaker 1: the game. I don't have a sobering thought for Giants fans.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I didn't see many positive signs. And I feel for
- 5:51Speaker 1: Joe Shane, I really do, because he didn't ask for
- 5:54Speaker 1: Hard Knocks cameras to be analyzing every offseason move and
- 5:57Speaker 1: as he's being filmed, as they let Saquon Barkley walk,
- 6:01Speaker 1: and they let Xavier McKinney walk, and you see Julian
- 6:04Speaker 1: Love getting interceptions up there is Seattle and you see
- 6:10Speaker 1: what's his name, Leonard Williams absolutely dominating for the for
- 6:13Speaker 1: the Seahawks. You start saying, oh, well, we went through
- 6:16Speaker 1: all this and we're analyzing it, and well what happened
- 6:19Speaker 1: there was all on film brutals start to the season
- 6:22Speaker 1: for the Giants. The joke I made on air is
- 6:25Speaker 1: that like the pumpkin patches and the hay rides, and
- 6:29Speaker 1: the East Coast have not opened yet, like it's an
- 6:31Speaker 1: early start to the season. It's right after Labor Day.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Like there's a place Hanks that's out in Long Island,
- 6:37Speaker 1: like I know it, like they it is not open yet.
- 6:40Speaker 1: And in a lot of ways, like Giants fans to the other,
- 6:42Speaker 1: season's over and it's before we even can go on
- 6:44Speaker 1: pumpkin patches, it's before we can even go on hay rides.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Like this, you can't even apple pick yet. Kids are
- 6:49Speaker 1: showing up to school in shorts still and the season's over,
- 6:52Speaker 1: Like that's that's demoralizing. I don't feel that way. I
- 6:55Speaker 1: feel like it's a long season and I've learned long
- 6:57Speaker 1: enough that week one is a liar. A lot of
- 6:59Speaker 1: times teams lose in week one and then figure a
- 7:02Speaker 1: way out to figure things out the rest of the
- 7:04Speaker 1: season and they can bounce back. And we never know
- 7:06Speaker 1: how seasons go. But Jets I feel about Giants don't
- 7:11Speaker 1: feel so hot. Chiefs feel very good about. The other
- 7:16Speaker 1: team I picked in the Super Bowl though, were the Packers,
- 7:19Speaker 1: And I didn't realize that, you know what their backup
- 7:22Speaker 1: quarterbacks and Malik Willison, Sean Clifford. I got to think
- 7:25Speaker 1: about all these things, and Jordan Love goes down. Malik Willison,
- 7:29Speaker 1: sew and Sean Clifford are not winning them a super Bowl,
- 7:31Speaker 1: They're not winning them an MC title. So we got
- 7:33Speaker 1: to get Jordan Love back if the Packers are gonna
- 7:36Speaker 1: have to fill my NFC championship prediction. At the very least,
- 7:39Speaker 1: their offense was moving with Love under center, and I
- 7:43Speaker 1: thought that game could have gone either way. Playing in
- 7:46Speaker 1: Brazil after a twelve hour flight on a stadium surface
- 7:50Speaker 1: that didn't see my ideal. I'm not gonna say that's
- 7:52Speaker 1: the version of the Packers or the Eagles we're gonna get.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I'm amost gonna say asterisk there. Most impressive teams, Chiefs.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I think the way they looked as oppressive, forty nine ers,
- 8:01Speaker 1: the way they looked as impressive. I'm gonna throw in
- 8:04Speaker 1: the Saints just to come out of the gates the
- 8:06Speaker 1: way they did. And then I love Tampa in the
- 8:09Speaker 1: NFC South. I love the way that they performed. They
- 8:11Speaker 1: came out there and they just lit it up and
- 8:13Speaker 1: said everyone's picking the Falcons, look at us. Most disappointing
- 8:16Speaker 1: teams Browns, no idea what that was, you know, You're
- 8:20Speaker 1: opening on a big stage with Brady in the booth
- 8:22Speaker 1: and everyone's watching, and it's a week one game on
- 8:25Speaker 1: Fox with that booth and that spotlight, and no other
- 8:28Speaker 1: Fox games in that window. So the entire country's getting that.
- 8:30Speaker 1: And for you to lay an egg like that with Watson,
- 8:33Speaker 1: major disappointment. Giants, major disappointment, Falcons major disappointment. What was
- 8:39Speaker 1: that to bring in Cousins? Cousins does not look one
- 8:42Speaker 1: hundred percent. That offense looks even more anemic than it
- 8:45Speaker 1: did under Arthur Smith last year. Can't be happy with that.
- 8:48Speaker 1: And then another disappointing team that you know, not a
- 8:50Speaker 1: lot of people are talking about as far as like
- 8:53Speaker 1: disappointments because what were we expecting. I don't know, the
- 8:57Speaker 1: Bears win, but what the hell was that offense? The
- 9:00Speaker 1: Bears offense. I was hoping for fireworks and for lightning
- 9:03Speaker 1: and for thunder and for all this stuff, and hard
- 9:05Speaker 1: knocks were talking up Caleb. Not a great offensive debut,
- 9:09Speaker 1: very concerning. You're not gonna win many games playing that way.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And now they've got a Sunday night battle against the
- 9:14Speaker 1: Houston Texans. That's four up for down. Some thoughts on
- 9:18Speaker 1: New York Brady. Everyone's asking me what you think of Brady?
- 9:21Speaker 1: It's a what's it? Is he submitting an Emmy reel
- 9:26Speaker 1: based on that performance? Probably not, But it's a long
- 9:29Speaker 1: season and he's gonna get better, and I think that
- 9:31Speaker 1: there are shades of some glimpses of what he could do.
- 9:34Speaker 1: But it's also like, all right, back to the drawing board.
- 9:37Speaker 1: If that wasn't the home run out of the Gates
- 9:38Speaker 1: that everyone expected, You've got plenty of weeks now to
- 9:40Speaker 1: work on it. And I think he's gonna get better
- 9:42Speaker 1: every week. And I thought Burke Cahrt was fantastic. And
- 9:45Speaker 1: when Brady's you know, talking, it was a blowout game.
- 9:48Speaker 1: There wasn't really many opportunities. What do you want to do?
- 9:50Speaker 1: You want to bury Deshaun Watson for for sixty minutes?
- 9:53Speaker 1: He didn't do that. I'm not making any excuses. We'll see.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I enjoyed it, but I also changed the channel because
- 9:59Speaker 1: the game was a blowout, and I started watching Seattle
- 10:01Speaker 1: Denver and I'm watching Adam Archiletta, and it just tells
- 10:04Speaker 1: you like the broadcast matters, but also I want the
- 10:06Speaker 1: competitive game. All in all, an amazing week one. You
- 10:10Speaker 1: think about the first two primetime games, the one on
- 10:12Speaker 1: Thursday night, the one on Friday night, How can you
- 10:14Speaker 1: top it? The Sunday Night one was even better. Between
- 10:16Speaker 1: the Rams and the Lions, one of my favorite games.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I've seen it forever. Just an epic matchup, and I
- 10:20Speaker 1: wouldn't be shocked if we see all those two teams
- 10:22Speaker 1: squaring off in January. And then last night's Monday Night
- 10:25Speaker 1: game just tells you, like, you know, all the hype
- 10:26Speaker 1: in the world, you got to go deliver. The biggest
- 10:29Speaker 1: upset of the week came from the Patriots. They beat
- 10:32Speaker 1: a Bengals team that a lot of people have winning
- 10:33Speaker 1: the AFC North. They did it so in a physical
- 10:36Speaker 1: fashion and up beat fashion, and in a way that
- 10:40Speaker 1: was like, Oh, they're going to compete this year. They're
- 10:42Speaker 1: not going to be a walk over. They're not going
- 10:43Speaker 1: to lose thirty seven nothing to any teams. They're too
- 10:45Speaker 1: proud and they're too disciplined, and they're too well coached.
- 10:49Speaker 1: To get an inside look at it. I wanted to
- 10:50Speaker 1: bring on one of my favorite guys to play the game,
- 10:54Speaker 1: and I guess that I'm excited to have on former
- 10:57Speaker 1: Patriots quarterback, but he also has played for just about
- 10:59Speaker 1: every other team in the NFL, and he's played with
- 11:02Speaker 1: all the greats. Brian Hoyer is our guest after this,
- 11:12Speaker 1: with no further ado, I want to bring on our guest,
- 11:14Speaker 1: one of my favorite guys in the league. I've covered
- 11:16Speaker 1: him for nearly two decades when he was a quarterback
- 11:19Speaker 1: in the NFL, and now he's doing a bit of
- 11:21Speaker 1: the media game as he's not currently on an NFL roster,
- 11:25Speaker 1: and he's been so cool to join us as our
- 11:27Speaker 1: Week one reaction, our Week two look ahead, but lots
- 11:31Speaker 1: of talk about on teams that he used to play for.
- 11:33Speaker 1: The great Brian Hoyer joins us, Brian, what's up? Man?
- 11:38Speaker 2: What's up? Peter? Thanks for having me on Man kind
- 11:40Speaker 2: of got me down this road. One of my first
- 11:42Speaker 2: and media appearances was zooming in with you guys on
- 11:44Speaker 2: Good Morning Football, and that went so well. They're like, hey,
- 11:46Speaker 2: why don't you come back, you know, the Friday before
- 11:48Speaker 2: the Super Bowl, And I was on the show with
- 11:50Speaker 2: you down there in New York, which was awesome, And
- 11:53Speaker 2: now I'm kind of just trying to navigate my way
- 11:56Speaker 2: through it all.
- 11:57Speaker 1: All right, So for the listeners, you're like Brian Hoyer,
- 12:00Speaker 1: All right, thinking about him as a Patriot. Last year
- 12:02Speaker 1: you were with the Raiders.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Raiders, that's right.
- 12:07Speaker 1: How's it end there and what's the what's the future
- 12:09Speaker 1: for you personally? Are you, Donnie hanging them up? If
- 12:11Speaker 1: there's a call, you know, I see Green Bay lost
- 12:13Speaker 1: Jordan Love. If they're like, we need a veteran quarterback,
- 12:16Speaker 1: is your is your phone line open?
- 12:18Speaker 2: Yeah? Of course. I look at the Joe Flacco model.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I mean, Joe waited around, waited around, and then all
- 12:22Speaker 2: of a sudden comeback Player of the Year. So you know,
- 12:25Speaker 2: I'm still you know, the thing about quarterback is is
- 12:29Speaker 2: I'll still I'll be able to throw till I'm fifty.
- 12:31Speaker 2: So if I'm in you know, good health, and it's
- 12:33Speaker 2: the right situation, it's always something that you know, I
- 12:36Speaker 2: tell my agents just you know, let me know, and
- 12:38Speaker 2: then it's then you've got to make that decision if
- 12:40Speaker 2: it's best for your family too. Because I was at
- 12:43Speaker 2: my son's seventh grade football practice yesterday watching him try
- 12:45Speaker 2: to play quarterback for the first time. So there's some
- 12:47Speaker 2: things that there's some benefits to not having, you know,
- 12:50Speaker 2: to be in meetings and practice all day but you know,
- 12:53Speaker 2: I love the game and that's why I'm staying involved
- 12:55Speaker 2: covering it, but also stay in shape in case that
- 12:57Speaker 2: call comes good.
- 12:58Speaker 1: You mentioned that we had you on Good Morning Football
- 13:01Speaker 1: and that was like your national media like whatever, that's fine.
- 13:05Speaker 1: You and I go back to the twenty fourteen season.
- 13:08Speaker 1: The Browns get off to this red hot start. You
- 13:10Speaker 1: guys beat Tennessee in dramatic fashion, and I fly into
- 13:14Speaker 1: Cleveland for the Fox NFL pregame show to interview their quarterback,
- 13:18Speaker 1: not Johnny Manziel, no Brian Hoyer, because you had them
- 13:21Speaker 1: off to that red hot start, and everyone in Cleveland
- 13:24Speaker 1: was a buzz a wild ride then. And this is
- 13:28Speaker 1: nearly ten years later, and dude, you still can sling it.
- 13:30Speaker 1: It's a pretty cool NFL career you've had. Dude.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been quite a journey. And you know, I'm
- 13:36Speaker 2: thankful for my family for you know, being a part
- 13:39Speaker 2: of it. It's not easy being the wife and having
- 13:41Speaker 2: to you know, pick up and move. There was a
- 13:43Speaker 2: time three years in a row it was a different
- 13:45Speaker 2: city and and you know, luckily my kids were still young.
- 13:48Speaker 2: You could pull them out of school, put them in
- 13:50Speaker 2: a new school. But now we've kind of established our
- 13:52Speaker 2: roots here in New England and that's why I'm covering
- 13:54Speaker 2: the Patriots. It's really easy for me to do. Haven't
- 13:56Speaker 2: been here for a long time. But it was a
- 13:58Speaker 2: great ride and I met a lot of great people.
- 14:00Speaker 2: And the thing that you know, sitting there watching these
- 14:03Speaker 2: games on Sunday and I missed the most is just
- 14:04Speaker 2: being around the guys. Know, And that's something that you
- 14:09Speaker 2: take for granted because you go in every day and
- 14:10Speaker 2: it's the grind of Mondays are reviewing the game and
- 14:14Speaker 2: Wednesday practice and meetings and all these things. But those
- 14:16Speaker 2: are the things now where you know, I'm sitting there
- 14:19Speaker 2: and missing those because it was such a built in camaraderie,
- 14:23Speaker 2: built in brotherhood. And it was pretty cool watching the
- 14:25Speaker 2: Patriots win that game when no one expected them to,
- 14:27Speaker 2: and you see them dumping the gate ray on Girod
- 14:30Speaker 2: and you know, just the unity and the belief that
- 14:33Speaker 2: they built and just in that one game, you know,
- 14:36Speaker 2: I know those feelings you talked about coming back down
- 14:38Speaker 2: twenty eight to three in Tennessee. You know the locker
- 14:40Speaker 2: room after that game. There was some video of me
- 14:42Speaker 2: even doing some crazy dance and I don't even know
- 14:44Speaker 2: what I was doing, but those are the moments that
- 14:46Speaker 2: you miss, you know, when you're not playing. So it's
- 14:50Speaker 2: you know, like I said, open to that possibility, but
- 14:53Speaker 2: also I'm enjoying kind of venturing into this this media
- 14:56Speaker 2: world too.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Yeah, let's quickly before we get into the football analysis,
- 15:00Speaker 1: kind of give a top level on the media stuff.
- 15:02Speaker 1: So you mentioned you're doing Patriots postgame. Where is that?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Then?
- 15:06Speaker 1: I also know I saw you you're doing serious satellite
- 15:09Speaker 1: radio as well, right.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah, so NBC Sports Boston. I have a weekly kind
- 15:15Speaker 2: of offensive game plan show that I record on Wednesdays
- 15:18Speaker 2: that comes out on NBC Sports Boston doing Sirius XM
- 15:22Speaker 2: radio Opening Drive with Solomon Willcott's a guy who used
- 15:24Speaker 2: to cover me when I was playing, so now teaming
- 15:26Speaker 2: up with him and one cool thing that I'm really
- 15:29Speaker 2: excited about and just kind of getting off the ground
- 15:31Speaker 2: doing a podcast. Everybody you know we're doing yours, a
- 15:34Speaker 2: lot of them out there, but a really unique one
- 15:36Speaker 2: with Patriots center David Andrews. So we're kind of joining
- 15:39Speaker 2: back up as teammates and it's me not playing him
- 15:42Speaker 2: still playing active and we just recorded it dropped late
- 15:45Speaker 2: last night, but we had Matt light On as a guest,
- 15:48Speaker 2: and it's been a lot of fun. And you know,
- 15:50Speaker 2: for me to do it with a guy who's still
- 15:52Speaker 2: in it and get his perspective, and you know, we
- 15:55Speaker 2: reviewed the Bengals game a little bit, but also some
- 15:57Speaker 2: storytelling and and anytime you have Matt light On as
- 16:00Speaker 2: a guest, you know, it's it's for sure going to
- 16:02Speaker 2: be some fun. So that'll be a weekly thing. Looking
- 16:05Speaker 2: at Danny Amandola coming on next week, talk about Dancing
- 16:08Speaker 2: with the Stars, talk about talk about the teammate that
- 16:11Speaker 2: he was and the incredible player that he was, and
- 16:13Speaker 2: so it'll be a fun thing to do each week.
- 16:15Speaker 2: And and that's one I'm really excited about too.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I was texting with Danny yesterday because he posted this
- 16:20Speaker 1: video of him shirtless playing tennis in La at like
- 16:23Speaker 1: the Beverly Hills Country Club, and I'm like, yeah, enough
- 16:26Speaker 1: with the thirst traps, Like I'm good.
- 16:28Speaker 2: I'm all right, I see not one of the coolest
- 16:30Speaker 2: people you ever. I mean literally, when I think like
- 16:33Speaker 2: someone who's the coolest guy is Danny A Mendolas like
- 16:36Speaker 2: comes to mind. And he was out there in Vegas
- 16:38Speaker 2: to me last year, so we got to spend some
- 16:40Speaker 2: time and and just he's he's literally one of the
- 16:43Speaker 2: most genuine like my son loves him. He's he comes
- 16:46Speaker 2: and he gives my son, Garrett a big hug when
- 16:48Speaker 2: we're at Tom's Hall of Fame. Enshrinman here in in
- 16:51Speaker 2: Foxborough and just but then he's out there, like you said,
- 16:54Speaker 2: the thirst traps. He's he's doing uh you know, surfing
- 16:57Speaker 2: on on out there. And then he's out in Alaska.
- 16:59Speaker 2: I mean just literally like international man of Mystery and great.
- 17:03Speaker 1: You know, I've I've had a really cool opportunity to
- 17:04Speaker 1: get to know him really well, gron really well. And
- 17:07Speaker 1: now through Fox I deal with Edelman a lot. And
- 17:10Speaker 1: it's like, as someone who's in those Patriot locker rooms,
- 17:13Speaker 1: you think about like you know, Belichick and this like
- 17:17Speaker 1: serious like you know, Castid shadow over like the fun Factor.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Yet you talk about those three and I'm not even
- 17:22Speaker 1: including some of the bigger personalities that I don't know,
- 17:25Speaker 1: but like those three Gronk, Edelman and Danny, like you're
- 17:28Speaker 1: not gonna find three cooler dudes who are going to
- 17:30Speaker 1: enjoy life more.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Not at all. I mean stories for days about those guys,
- 17:36Speaker 2: but just I mean you look at them and it's
- 17:38Speaker 2: like they're living that young. You know, I got kids,
- 17:42Speaker 2: I'm busy, you know, I look at that. I just
- 17:44Speaker 2: live vicariously through them sometimes. But all three guys who
- 17:48Speaker 2: you know, unbelievable players, but even better friends and teammates.
- 17:51Speaker 2: And you know, it's always fun to see people doing well.
- 17:54Speaker 2: And so whether it's Julian with his podcasts and and
- 17:57Speaker 2: you know on NFL you know, game Day and Gronk
- 18:00Speaker 2: doing his thing, and Danny's you know, Dancing with the Stars,
- 18:03Speaker 2: so with some kind of moves he has out there.
- 18:05Speaker 2: But it's until good when you see your friends do well.
- 18:08Speaker 1: All right, So Brady's now one game into this side
- 18:11Speaker 1: of it, and there were some people who took their
- 18:13Speaker 1: wax publicly. I have no thoughts. I think it's just
- 18:16Speaker 1: like an NFL season. Let's give it the full year
- 18:19Speaker 1: before we start weighing in on Brady the broadcaster. Did
- 18:22Speaker 1: you speak to him beforehand? Have you had any chance
- 18:25Speaker 1: to listen to the game, and what is just your
- 18:27Speaker 1: overall thoughts of Tom Brady now buttoned up suit broadcaster
- 18:31Speaker 1: for FOXX.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Who I texted him because he was in my hometown
- 18:35Speaker 2: of Cleveland, Ohio for his first game, so I said, hey, hope,
- 18:38Speaker 2: my hometown's treating you well. Good luck tomorrow. And then
- 18:40Speaker 2: you know, as you mentioned, I was doing the Patriots
- 18:42Speaker 2: postgame show, so I didn't get to see a lot
- 18:43Speaker 2: of the early stuff, but I walked in and back
- 18:46Speaker 2: home and he was breaking down Dak's touchdown pass and
- 18:49Speaker 2: I was like, man, this is this is it for me.
- 18:52Speaker 2: This is a play that we used to run versus
- 18:53Speaker 2: a bliit zero look and Tom nailed it. And you know,
- 18:57Speaker 2: but there's a thing, there's a transition. I'm learning it too,
- 18:59Speaker 2: and you realize in the media there's a cadence. I
- 19:01Speaker 2: remember doing the Good Morning Football Show with you and
- 19:04Speaker 2: it's like, you guys made it so comfortable for me
- 19:06Speaker 2: because you're the pros, and it was like, you know,
- 19:11Speaker 2: you passed it to me and I knew when to speak,
- 19:12Speaker 2: but you know when you're and I did a little
- 19:14Speaker 2: bit of the Patriots preseason games and it's like, okay,
- 19:17Speaker 2: it's my time to speak. Get it in before the
- 19:18Speaker 2: next play. And so I think there's a rhythm that
- 19:21Speaker 2: you have to learn. And I think Tom Brady is
- 19:23Speaker 2: the type of person if you told him, hey, we're
- 19:25Speaker 2: gonna make you, you know, go play the piano. You know,
- 19:28Speaker 2: give him some time and he'll be great at playing
- 19:30Speaker 2: the piano. So I think, you know, he'll he'll he'll
- 19:32Speaker 2: learn from it, just like he learned when he was
- 19:34Speaker 2: playing football. And then you know, I think, like anything,
- 19:37Speaker 2: it'll it'll come to him naturally as the season goes on.
- 19:40Speaker 1: All right, so we've seen Brady goes like Belichick the media, Darling,
- 19:44Speaker 1: did you see that coming? Seven different medias everywhere Manning
- 19:47Speaker 1: cast last night inside the NFL to night. I mean,
- 19:50Speaker 1: it's a lot. And here's Belichick. Did you ever see him,
- 19:54Speaker 1: you know, turn the cameras on, I want to talk publicly.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Never and especially the way he trained us to deal
- 19:59Speaker 2: with the media. So it's kind of like a role
- 20:00Speaker 2: reversal seeing him all over the place. I was laughing
- 20:03Speaker 2: last night watching the Maning cast because you talk about
- 20:05Speaker 2: a rhythm, you're doing it via zoom kind of how
- 20:08Speaker 2: we're doing. And every time Peyton would go to talk,
- 20:10Speaker 2: Bill would say something. At one point Peyton kind of
- 20:12Speaker 2: laughed and he reared his head back. He's like, all right, Bill,
- 20:14Speaker 2: now you know what is your thoughts here? But it's funny.
- 20:17Speaker 2: And I was sitting there watching with my son. I said, here,
- 20:20Speaker 2: now you can experience what it was like to sit
- 20:22Speaker 2: in one of Bill's meetings. He's like Wilson, Wilson, I mean,
- 20:24Speaker 2: just double the guy. And it's just like, I think
- 20:27Speaker 2: people will get to see Bill from a different side
- 20:30Speaker 2: and it'll be fun for everyone. But I mean, god,
- 20:32Speaker 2: he's everywhere Instagram, instaface. I mean he used to talk
- 20:35Speaker 2: to us about, you know, stay off of insta face
- 20:38Speaker 2: and my Twitter and all this stuff, and now to
- 20:41Speaker 2: see him everywhere, it's pretty funny.
- 20:43Speaker 1: No joke though. Like Julian was on our show on
- 20:45Speaker 1: Sunday and Edelman says, the team he's watching is the
- 20:49Speaker 1: Atlanta Falcons, and I'm like, oh, yeah, they got fun
- 20:51Speaker 1: team and they designed cousins. He goes, I'm watching the
- 20:53Speaker 1: Atlanta Falcons because Bill Belichick interviewed for that job and
- 20:56Speaker 1: did not get it, and they chose someone else, Rahie
- 20:58Speaker 1: Morris over them. If they're a win now team and
- 21:02Speaker 1: they chose someone over coach, I know there's this mystique.
- 21:05Speaker 1: And there's also some recon years where Belichick missed the
- 21:07Speaker 1: playoffs and his teams didn't compete for any AFC titles
- 21:11Speaker 1: and he is in his seventies. Where do you stand
- 21:13Speaker 1: on Belichick twenty twenty five NFL head coach? Do you
- 21:18Speaker 1: see that still happening or do you think this is
- 21:20Speaker 1: a nice smooth transition to media.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I mean we'll see, right, I mean it will. He
- 21:25Speaker 2: may go and do these media things and just enjoy it,
- 21:28Speaker 2: and you know, you always never know what opportunities present themselves.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I don't think Bill's going to go to a team
- 21:33Speaker 2: that's in a rebuilding mode. I think it'd be, you know,
- 21:36Speaker 2: somewhere like Dallas or Philly, somewhere that he knows he
- 21:39Speaker 2: can go in and has a roster and can kind
- 21:41Speaker 2: of come in right away and win football games. So
- 21:44Speaker 2: it'll be interesting to see. Obviously, he's doing a lot
- 21:46Speaker 2: of the media stuff right now, keeping himself busy, but
- 21:49Speaker 2: a lot of that is too, is keeping an eye
- 21:50Speaker 2: on the leak. You know, we were talking before we
- 21:53Speaker 2: started recording, Like for me, this is a whole new
- 21:56Speaker 2: world because I'm doing Patriots postgame show, but I'm also
- 21:59Speaker 2: covering some of the national stuff too, So I'm trying
- 22:01Speaker 2: to scramble to watch all these you know, all these games.
- 22:03Speaker 2: I got like six screens up and you know, so
- 22:07Speaker 2: for him, it's it's good because he's staying involved and
- 22:09Speaker 2: he's covering a lot of football, so he'll have a
- 22:11Speaker 2: really good in depth knowledge of different teams, what they need,
- 22:15Speaker 2: you know, what teams maybe he's looking and hoping for
- 22:18Speaker 2: if he gets back into coaching.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Okay, Patriots. Everyone coming into this season said it's going
- 22:23Speaker 1: to be a rebuilding year. Drake May is going to
- 22:26Speaker 1: be a long term project, so let's not rush him
- 22:28Speaker 1: out of the dugout just yet. Let's just start with
- 22:30Speaker 1: your Kobe, see what we can do. And then there's
- 22:33Speaker 1: this thing called survivor pools, which you pick one team
- 22:36Speaker 1: in the each week and you can't use him again
- 22:38Speaker 1: and good Morning football. I was the victim of this.
- 22:41Speaker 1: They said, Peter, pick one team that you feel most
- 22:44Speaker 1: confident in winning this week. I said, well, Cincinnati's at
- 22:46Speaker 1: home against a Patriots team that we have no idea
- 22:47Speaker 1: what they're going to get. And sure enough, I'm out
- 22:50Speaker 1: of the survivor pool after one week. Yet you didn't
- 22:53Speaker 1: seem so surprised. Brian. I'm watching you, and I was
- 22:56Speaker 1: watching you this entire preseason. You were one of the
- 22:59Speaker 1: few people who did not seem surprised that this Patriots
- 23:01Speaker 1: team came out and absolutely outmanned, was more disciplined, and
- 23:06Speaker 1: was better shape, it seemed like than this Bengals team
- 23:09Speaker 1: who was playing at home with all pros all over
- 23:11Speaker 1: the roster.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Well, and I said on the pregame show, my first
- 23:15Speaker 2: time making a prediction on a game. And I said,
- 23:17Speaker 2: maybe I'm just too close to it. Maybe I'm just
- 23:19Speaker 2: too you know, close to being a player and being positive.
- 23:22Speaker 2: But you know, I watched the Patriots in the preseason
- 23:25Speaker 2: and a lot was made. You know, Okay, who's going
- 23:27Speaker 2: to be the quarterback? Okay, you put that behind you.
- 23:29Speaker 2: You go with the veteran Jacoby because of his experience,
- 23:31Speaker 2: his knowledge of the system, you know what he brings
- 23:34Speaker 2: to the table. And then okay, the offensive line's the
- 23:37Speaker 2: what's the lineup gonna be? What are they gonna do?
- 23:40Speaker 2: But when I looked at the matchup, you know, the
- 23:42Speaker 2: Bengals weren't a great run defense the past few years.
- 23:44Speaker 2: The Patriots all they've been talking about is establishing the
- 23:47Speaker 2: run in this new era with Alex van Pelt. And
- 23:50Speaker 2: on top of that, you weren't really sure was Jamar
- 23:52Speaker 2: Chase gonna play? Was T Higgins gonna play? And look,
- 23:55Speaker 2: I was a long time Patriot, but last year when
- 23:57Speaker 2: I was in Vegas, I had to come in and
- 23:58Speaker 2: play against the Patriots, and I realized, you know, I
- 24:01Speaker 2: knew the defense was always good, but playing against them
- 24:03Speaker 2: in a game, they make it so hard on you
- 24:05Speaker 2: with how much they switched up. The fronts are different,
- 24:07Speaker 2: the coverages are different. It's it's a tough day. I mean,
- 24:10Speaker 2: you have to be as a quarterback on your p's
- 24:12Speaker 2: and q's the entire game because the moment you're not
- 24:15Speaker 2: and they fool you, it turns into a really bad play.
- 24:17Speaker 2: And so the defense did a great job. Obviously, Judon
- 24:20Speaker 2: traded away, but it was kind of a pass rush
- 24:23Speaker 2: by committee. Christian Zalez does a great job, you know,
- 24:26Speaker 2: locking up Jamar Chase, who you know, in all reality,
- 24:29Speaker 2: didn't practice much their in training camp, so the rhythm's
- 24:31Speaker 2: kind of off there, and I thought it was kind
- 24:33Speaker 2: of a perfect storm. And plus on top of that,
- 24:35Speaker 2: having been a teammate of Drawd Mayo, a friend of
- 24:37Speaker 2: Girod Mayo, and seeing him push these guys in training camp,
- 24:41Speaker 2: you could see that these guys believe in Girod. They
- 24:44Speaker 2: wanted to win for Jrod, and you saw that in
- 24:45Speaker 2: the postgame celebration, the exuberance that was there, and and
- 24:49Speaker 2: them just kind of, you know, building the foundation for
- 24:52Speaker 2: the program that they're trying to build. And you know,
- 24:55Speaker 2: I thought, if things went right, if the Patriots didn't
- 24:58Speaker 2: turn the ball over, if they ran the football, if
- 25:00Speaker 2: they could avoid you know, the pressure from an Arumu
- 25:04Speaker 2: and Hendrickson, which they did tremendous job, they'd be in it.
- 25:08Speaker 2: It'd be a close game. And so I predicted them
- 25:10Speaker 2: to win seventeen fourteen. So I was off by a
- 25:11Speaker 2: few points, but it played out kind of how I
- 25:14Speaker 2: thought it would.
- 25:16Speaker 1: All right, So you mentioned your teammates with him. You're
- 25:18Speaker 1: also there all training camp. Give me a good Girrod
- 25:21Speaker 1: Mayo's story, because a lot of people nationally, they don't
- 25:24Speaker 1: they know the name. They remember when he was drafted,
- 25:26Speaker 1: they remember him as a player. But like Patriots people
- 25:28Speaker 1: swear by this dude when he got that gig, and
- 25:30Speaker 1: everyone was like, what about Vrabel, what about Anyone inside
- 25:33Speaker 1: that organization was like no, no, no, you don't get it.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Gird Mayo is the guy. So tell us about Mayo
- 25:38Speaker 1: because I personally don't have much of a relationship.
- 25:40Speaker 2: With him right. A few things come to mind. We
- 25:42Speaker 2: used to be neighbors. We lived together next to each
- 25:44Speaker 2: other for three years, so we would go play NHL
- 25:47Speaker 2: hockey on PlayStation or FIFA, and I mean these were competitive.
- 25:50Speaker 2: You hear the stories about Tom Brady like throwing the
- 25:52Speaker 2: remote so the game would like glitch. I mean, these
- 25:54Speaker 2: were intense battles. So that's the type of competitor he is.
- 25:57Speaker 2: And then you know we were talking that we interviewed
- 26:00Speaker 2: Matt light And for our podcast and Macco's Jiraw was
- 26:03Speaker 2: a coach the moment he stepped on the field as
- 26:05Speaker 2: a player. That's the type of intelligence level. And I
- 26:07Speaker 2: remember these battles between Brady and Gerard where we would
- 26:11Speaker 2: have you know, we'd call two plays in the huddle.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Tom would come up, He'd see the look, he'd alert
- 26:15Speaker 2: to the second play. Giro would change the defense, then
- 26:18Speaker 2: Tom would go back to the original play, then Giab
- 26:20Speaker 2: would go back to the other. It was like a
- 26:21Speaker 2: mental chess game going on. And so you saw it
- 26:23Speaker 2: as a player, and he dealt with some injuries and
- 26:25Speaker 2: one funny story when I played against Gerard when I
- 26:28Speaker 2: was playing for Houston, we were playing the Patriots. I'll
- 26:30Speaker 2: never forget this, but this is just who he is.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I stepped up, I threw a seam ball. It was
- 26:34Speaker 2: going to be a touchdown. Our tight end dropped the ball,
- 26:36Speaker 2: and Girod was like just starts laughing in my face.
- 26:39Speaker 2: He's like, man, that was a great throw. That was
- 26:40Speaker 2: going to get a touchdown. And it was just one
- 26:42Speaker 2: of those demoralizing like oh my god, you know, just
- 26:45Speaker 2: one of those competitive things like get under your skin.
- 26:49Speaker 2: But you could see the leader he was as a player.
- 26:51Speaker 2: He kind of stepped away from football a little bit,
- 26:53Speaker 2: worked in the business world, you know, leadership skills there
- 26:56Speaker 2: and comes back. And I was there when I came
- 26:59Speaker 2: back when he was starting to coach, and you could
- 27:01Speaker 2: just see the guys gravitate to him. And I think
- 27:04Speaker 2: you look at Gerard and you say, Okay, he's a
- 27:05Speaker 2: former player, stands what I'm going through. And I think
- 27:08Speaker 2: that's what allowed him to kind of push these guys
- 27:11Speaker 2: in training camp, and they talked about it, this is
- 27:13Speaker 2: one of the most physical training camps they've had.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Uh.
- 27:16Speaker 2: He made them run the hill every day, just like
- 27:18Speaker 2: Bill and You talked about being in better shape. At
- 27:20Speaker 2: the end of that game, they run, they run the ball,
- 27:22Speaker 2: you know, when Cincinnati knows they're going to run the
- 27:24Speaker 2: ball and finish with the ball and taking a knee.
- 27:26Speaker 2: And so I think that game really embody probably who
- 27:29Speaker 2: Gerard was as a player. That's how that team played.
- 27:32Speaker 2: It's exactly what you know, I thought they they should
- 27:36Speaker 2: and could look like. And now you just got to
- 27:38Speaker 2: go out and do it again. We were talking about
- 27:39Speaker 2: it like, Okay, you laid one brick. Now you got
- 27:42Speaker 2: a tough Seattle team coming in. They're they're flying across
- 27:45Speaker 2: the country early eastern start, early window, and so you
- 27:50Speaker 2: have you can't just take this momentum and say, yeah,
- 27:52Speaker 2: it was a great story, but you got to go
- 27:54Speaker 2: on and repeat it and repeat it and repeat it.
- 27:56Speaker 2: And I think they have a formula now, and David
- 27:58Speaker 2: Andrews hit on. He goes, you know, if we just
- 28:00Speaker 2: changed two of those fuels and the touchdowns when we
- 28:02Speaker 2: get in that red area, it's a much larger deficit
- 28:06Speaker 2: for a team to overcome. So I think they laid
- 28:08Speaker 2: one brick in that foundation, and they continue to try
- 28:11Speaker 2: to do that the rest of the year.
- 28:12Speaker 1: I got some more questions on this current team and
- 28:15Speaker 1: what we saw on Sunday. So you mentioned the training
- 28:19Speaker 1: camp in a post twenty twenty CBA World. I feel
- 28:24Speaker 1: like training camp is almost akin to summer camp in
- 28:27Speaker 1: a way, where yes, you're going to work out, but
- 28:29Speaker 1: like everything we heard out of New England was that
- 28:32Speaker 1: it was the toughest training camp and it was so hard,
- 28:34Speaker 1: And yet when you watch them on the field on Sunday,
- 28:37Speaker 1: they're grinding out those extra yards and they're able to
- 28:40Speaker 1: play at a different pace than maybe Cincinnati was. So
- 28:43Speaker 1: knowing the barriers of the CBA and there's no more
- 28:46Speaker 1: two A days and you can't do stuff in certain
- 28:48Speaker 1: ways with pads. What did Mayo do that is so
- 28:51Speaker 1: specific that makes this team ready to go and seem
- 28:54Speaker 1: like they're in midseas informed when their opponent did not
- 28:56Speaker 1: look like that.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Well, I think you just preached competition the whole training camp.
- 28:59Speaker 2: It was like, no matter who's out there, we're competing.
- 29:01Speaker 2: And then there was a few days where they went
- 29:03Speaker 2: full live tackling. You know, they went pads a lot
- 29:06Speaker 2: within the new rules of the CBA. He pushed them
- 29:08Speaker 2: and then every day, you know, just like we used
- 29:11Speaker 2: to do with Bill was had they got the hill
- 29:13Speaker 2: over there, he'd run over the hill and make sure
- 29:14Speaker 2: they're in shape because a lot of these guys aren't
- 29:16Speaker 2: playing a lot of plays in the preseason, so you
- 29:18Speaker 2: got to get them in shape somehow, some way. And
- 29:20Speaker 2: I think, you know, you see it. I saw a
- 29:22Speaker 2: few quotes today. Guys want to run through a brick
- 29:24Speaker 2: wall for Giradimeo. And when guys feel like that about
- 29:27Speaker 2: your head coach, you can push them as much as
- 29:29Speaker 2: you want and then to go out there and validate
- 29:32Speaker 2: that by winning the results on the board, the results,
- 29:35Speaker 2: and that allows you to push it a little bit
- 29:37Speaker 2: more and and hold people accountable a little bit more,
- 29:40Speaker 2: and people buy in a little bit more. And so
- 29:42Speaker 2: you know, like I said, it's one brick in that foundation.
- 29:45Speaker 2: And you could see it. You could see the reactions
- 29:47Speaker 2: in the locker room Girod getting the game ball. One
- 29:50Speaker 2: thing that struck me was Jacoby Brissette was like, yeah,
- 29:52Speaker 2: I was emotional, you know, emotional for the opportunity. I cry.
- 29:56Speaker 2: You know. Girod came up to me and said, hey man,
- 29:58Speaker 2: I believe in you. You're going to ball out and
- 30:00Speaker 2: win us this game. He's like I've never really had
- 30:02Speaker 2: a coach talk to me that way before. And I
- 30:03Speaker 2: think Girod, being a young guy, a guy who played,
- 30:06Speaker 2: understands the value of knowing that you know, when the
- 30:09Speaker 2: players know you care about them, they will they will
- 30:11Speaker 2: literally run through a brick wall for you.
- 30:14Speaker 1: There also seems to be this, you know, air of
- 30:17Speaker 1: secrecy and paranoia and whatever it was under Belichick that
- 30:22Speaker 1: seems to be lifted. Like Girod talks, he runs his mouth.
- 30:25Speaker 1: He's free to have these players talk. You can say
- 30:27Speaker 1: whatever you want. Just be ready to play. Does it
- 30:30Speaker 1: feel lighter in New England now? Like nothing against coach Belichick,
- 30:33Speaker 1: but this is a younger generation, and quite frankly, it
- 30:36Speaker 1: seems like Mayo is connecting with them in a different way.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred percent. And I think the one thing,
- 30:41Speaker 2: you know, when I thought, okay, who replaces Bill the
- 30:45Speaker 2: greatest coach of all time? Those are tough shoes to
- 30:48Speaker 2: fill no matter what. And I know the last two years,
- 30:50Speaker 2: few years weren't what they were, but it's still tough
- 30:52Speaker 2: because those are the memories you have of coach Belichick.
- 30:55Speaker 2: But the thing that Girod did, he played for Bill,
- 30:58Speaker 2: so he knows the culture. He knows, you know, what
- 31:00Speaker 2: he wants it to be, like he coached under Bill,
- 31:03Speaker 2: and I think he looked at it like, I know
- 31:05Speaker 2: what it takes to win, and I've been a part
- 31:07Speaker 2: of those winning organizations. But times are different. I want
- 31:10Speaker 2: to put my own spin on it. But I can
- 31:12Speaker 2: still be tough. I mentioned to him in one of
- 31:14Speaker 2: our preseason you know meetings, I said, you know, you're
- 31:19Speaker 2: a player's coach, and he kind of pushed back, and
- 31:20Speaker 2: they said, I just want to be a good coach.
- 31:22Speaker 2: And I said, I don't think you're a players coach
- 31:24Speaker 2: because you're you know, friends with the players, or you
- 31:27Speaker 2: take it easy on him. I said, you're a player's
- 31:28Speaker 2: coach because you're a former player. And those guys look
- 31:30Speaker 2: at you. And when you sit up in front of
- 31:32Speaker 2: a group a team meeting and you address them, no
- 31:35Speaker 2: one's questioning, like, man, this guy's never been through it.
- 31:37Speaker 2: He doesn't know what he's talking about. And there's a
- 31:39Speaker 2: lot of great coaches who never played. But I think
- 31:42Speaker 2: you talk about a younger generation and they come in
- 31:44Speaker 2: and they say, wow, this guy was an All Pro player,
- 31:46Speaker 2: he was a captain. You know right away you grab
- 31:49Speaker 2: some of these young guys attention, it's different era guys
- 31:52Speaker 2: coming in with Nio money. We had guys out in
- 31:54Speaker 2: Vegas last year who took a pay cut to come
- 31:56Speaker 2: play for the Raiders. So it's just a different you know,
- 31:59Speaker 2: mentality and these players, you know, they come in and
- 32:02Speaker 2: that's the times that we're living in. And I think
- 32:06Speaker 2: that with young guys, and we talked about it before,
- 32:09Speaker 2: Now they'll believe them a little bit more. They'll they'll
- 32:11Speaker 2: buy in a little bit more, and they'll they'll work
- 32:13Speaker 2: a little bit harder. And that doesn't mean they're going
- 32:15Speaker 2: to go to the playoffs and win the super Bowl.
- 32:17Speaker 2: But a lot of times, you know, with organizations and transition,
- 32:21Speaker 2: building the foundation, sometimes it might take a seven and
- 32:25Speaker 2: nine year and and Ayton nine year whatever it is.
- 32:29Speaker 2: But then in year two you've built that foundation and
- 32:31Speaker 2: you you stack them together and you're in the playoffs
- 32:34Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden you're making a run
- 32:35Speaker 2: for it. So you know, a lot like I look
- 32:37Speaker 2: at the Houston Texans, a sneaky team, a young quarterback.
- 32:40Speaker 2: They've Nick Casseroo done a tremendous job, obviously a former
- 32:43Speaker 2: New England guy, building a unit around a rookie quarterback
- 32:47Speaker 2: before you've got to go pay them this massive extension
- 32:49Speaker 2: and make a run at it. And they a similar situation,
- 32:52Speaker 2: a young defensive minded coach who played a lot of
- 32:55Speaker 2: great football on Demico Ryans and I think you're starting
- 32:58Speaker 2: to see kind of that model, you know, Dan Campbell
- 33:00Speaker 2: and Detroit. It's kind of out there in Las Vegas
- 33:04Speaker 2: where I was here to say, and so you know,
- 33:08Speaker 2: that doesn't necessarily make you a great coach. I think
- 33:12Speaker 2: Girad benefits not only from being a former player, but
- 33:14Speaker 2: also learning from Bill not only as the player, but
- 33:18Speaker 2: also he was in those coaching meetings for the past
- 33:20Speaker 2: four years, so he's seen it from both sides and
- 33:23Speaker 2: learned from Bill and now is taking you know, what
- 33:25Speaker 2: he learned and putting his own spin and flavor on it.
- 33:27Speaker 2: And you can see the guys really.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Like, yeah, no doubt rapping with the Patriots. I think
- 33:38Speaker 1: it's interesting that they came out and they performed that way.
- 33:42Speaker 1: You know Brissette really well. Obviously having been you know,
- 33:45Speaker 1: Patriots quarterback and yourself having such a connection to the team,
- 33:49Speaker 1: have you had a chance to get to know Drake
- 33:50Speaker 1: May at all for the Patriots fans listening, just a
- 33:52Speaker 1: little sprinkle of maybe what we can see with Drake
- 33:54Speaker 1: May down the line. Yeah.
- 33:56Speaker 2: I mean I had him in one production meeting and
- 33:58Speaker 2: you know, he comes in, says all the right things,
- 34:01Speaker 2: is working hard. You know, talk to Alex van Pelt
- 34:03Speaker 2: about him. You know, he's doing everything and more that
- 34:05Speaker 2: they're asked of him, you know, with talking about technology
- 34:10Speaker 2: and this generation, this Apple Vision pro if someone's developed
- 34:13Speaker 2: a three D model that these guys can go in
- 34:15Speaker 2: and take extra rep So I know he's doing a
- 34:17Speaker 2: lot of that in this car time and yeah, it's
- 34:19Speaker 2: really cool. So you know, he's working really hard. And
- 34:22Speaker 2: the one thing that I've always said is, and Tom
- 34:24Speaker 2: Brady kind of echoed this, it's always good for a
- 34:26Speaker 2: young guy if you can come in and learn from
- 34:28Speaker 2: a really good veteran. And I had the privilege to
- 34:31Speaker 2: come in and watch Tom for my first four years
- 34:33Speaker 2: of my career and just soak it all in. And
- 34:35Speaker 2: I think, you know, say what you want about Jacoby,
- 34:38Speaker 2: but he's been a successful quarterback. He's you know, nine
- 34:42Speaker 2: seasons in, he started for multiple teams, and he does
- 34:45Speaker 2: it the right way. I was there with him in
- 34:47Speaker 2: Indianapolis when that was his first year as a starter,
- 34:49Speaker 2: Andrew Luck, you know, suddenly retires. I thought there to
- 34:52Speaker 2: be his backup, and immediately from day one, he was
- 34:54Speaker 2: a leader on that team. He ran the meetings, He
- 34:57Speaker 2: had good meetings with the receivers and they were on
- 34:59Speaker 2: the same page. And I think, you know, just seeing
- 35:01Speaker 2: that from a pro and coming in every day and
- 35:04Speaker 2: seeing how Jacoby's going to prepare and all those things
- 35:06Speaker 2: that will do wonders for drake Ma and his career
- 35:08Speaker 2: if he just sits there, you know, uses this time
- 35:11Speaker 2: to not only make himself better, but see how a
- 35:13Speaker 2: real pro approaches the game.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, I'm going to give you some names. I
- 35:17Speaker 1: would like some rapid fire, your best story. You didn't
- 35:19Speaker 1: prepare yourself for this, but I love stories. Okay, we
- 35:23Speaker 1: had the roast, but I'm sure there's a story that
- 35:26Speaker 1: hasn't been told. Your funniest Tom Brady's story. What do
- 35:30Speaker 1: you got?
- 35:31Speaker 2: Oh man? I think one thing that comes to mind.
- 35:33Speaker 2: And another guy who's in you know, a hot topic
- 35:35Speaker 2: right now is Bill O'Brien And we used to call
- 35:37Speaker 2: him the teapot and literally, you know, we never knew
- 35:41Speaker 2: when Billy was going to fly off the handle. And
- 35:43Speaker 2: there was one time where these two and I know
- 35:46Speaker 2: a lot's been shown of this, this back and forth
- 35:48Speaker 2: on the sideline when Tom throws an interception and he's
- 35:51Speaker 2: kind of getting after Taekwon Underwood, who's a receiver coach
- 35:54Speaker 2: here now in New England, and these two going after it,
- 35:57Speaker 2: and I have like one of the big coats. It
- 35:58Speaker 2: was a cold day and I'm trying to shield them.
- 36:00Speaker 2: But we had this teapot and every day we'd come
- 36:02Speaker 2: in and be like, all right, Billy, you're on the
- 36:04Speaker 2: teapot again, and we'd write it down and we still
- 36:06Speaker 2: have it. It's like a trophy and it's like the
- 36:07Speaker 2: Stanley Cup. And by the end of the year, the
- 36:09Speaker 2: whole teapot was filled. And so we had so many
- 36:12Speaker 2: great times. I mean, for me, you know, I don't
- 36:15Speaker 2: know if my career goes fifteen years if I don't
- 36:17Speaker 2: spend those first four years, you know, learning from him.
- 36:19Speaker 2: And then you know, I had the unique experience to
- 36:21Speaker 2: come back and be here, you know, at his last
- 36:24Speaker 2: years in New England, and and just garner that friendship
- 36:26Speaker 2: and relationship. But those were some great times with Bill O'Brien,
- 36:30Speaker 2: just you know, kind of always you know, right on
- 36:32Speaker 2: each other's cage, seeing what we could get out of it,
- 36:34Speaker 2: and had some great moments there.
- 36:36Speaker 1: What about Brady's level of celebrity, Like this is the
- 36:40Speaker 1: most famous man in the world, and yet you guys
- 36:42Speaker 1: were at a workplace together and often wearing sweatpants and
- 36:44Speaker 1: T shirts, like when you would go out into the public.
- 36:47Speaker 1: What was it like being around Brady the rock star?
- 36:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it was crazy. I mean I remember one time
- 36:52Speaker 2: at the super Bowl in Indianapolis, we were having like
- 36:54Speaker 2: a team dinner at Saint Elmos and just trying to
- 36:57Speaker 2: you know, riding over with him, trying to get in
- 36:59Speaker 2: and the amount of people there. And one time, you know,
- 37:02Speaker 2: right when I came back in twenty seventeen, our first
- 37:05Speaker 2: game was out in Den and then we were going
- 37:07Speaker 2: to Mexico City, So we spent the week in between
- 37:09Speaker 2: and Colorado Springs and it was Friday night. You know,
- 37:11Speaker 2: there wasn't a ton to do, but you want to
- 37:13Speaker 2: go and get away from football a little bit. So
- 37:14Speaker 2: we went to go see a movie and that was me,
- 37:17Speaker 2: Tom and Alex Guerrero and Alex had rented like a
- 37:19Speaker 2: little Mustang, so it's the three of us I'm in
- 37:22Speaker 2: the back seat, like sideways, and we go in the
- 37:24Speaker 2: movie and and Tom was, you know, very you know
- 37:28Speaker 2: what movie?
- 37:29Speaker 1: What are we talking about?
- 37:30Speaker 2: I think it was I think it was Justice League,
- 37:32Speaker 2: one of the DC superhero leads at the time been out. Yeah, yeah,
- 37:38Speaker 2: I think so, one of those. And uh, and you know,
- 37:41Speaker 2: but Tom was very you know, casual, put his head
- 37:43Speaker 2: down and you know, kind of he's like, you guys,
- 37:45Speaker 2: get the tickets, I'll meet you by the entry. And
- 37:46Speaker 2: no one, no one really knew, but somehow someone must
- 37:49Speaker 2: have recognized him, because by the time we got out,
- 37:52Speaker 2: there was just people waiting for for us, you know,
- 37:54Speaker 2: for him. When we walked out, and he's like, come on,
- 37:57Speaker 2: we got to get in the car quick. And while
- 37:59Speaker 2: the movie had been playing, it started snowing, so they're like, hoy,
- 38:02Speaker 2: you take the keys and drive. Alex gets better in
- 38:04Speaker 2: the back seat and I'm like, oh my god, like
- 38:06Speaker 2: I'm driving this two wheel drive Mustang in the snow
- 38:09Speaker 2: and get a car. Yeah yeah, but getaway car. And
- 38:12Speaker 2: literally people are following us back to the hotel, and
- 38:15Speaker 2: it's just it just shows it's a different lifestyle, different level.
- 38:18Speaker 2: But he handles it so well. And and I think
- 38:20Speaker 2: the one thing that he always enjoyed and he talked
- 38:22Speaker 2: about it even at his Hall of Fame induction here
- 38:24Speaker 2: in Fox Rows. Just when he came in, he just
- 38:26Speaker 2: got to be one of the guys. And that's what,
- 38:28Speaker 2: you know, it was so great about him, and we
- 38:30Speaker 2: kept him humble, and we cracked jokes on him, and
- 38:33Speaker 2: Julian was always Julian always had something to crack on time.
- 38:37Speaker 2: And I think I think that's what, you know, made
- 38:39Speaker 2: him love it even more because he came in and
- 38:41Speaker 2: you know what it was going out on around outside,
- 38:43Speaker 2: but when he came in, he was one of fifty
- 38:45Speaker 2: three guys and we were all, you know, working towards
- 38:47Speaker 2: the same goal, and that was you know, that was
- 38:49Speaker 2: pretty cool.
- 38:50Speaker 1: What about Edelman when he first got there, I can't
- 38:52Speaker 1: imagine him being the same guy as when he left.
- 38:54Speaker 1: He had to come in as like scrappy and humble
- 38:57Speaker 1: as a seventh round pick and maybe a quarterback, maybe
- 38:59Speaker 1: a wide receiver. But like I work with him now,
- 39:01Speaker 1: he's one of the biggest personalities, confident as anyone I've
- 39:05Speaker 1: ever met. But like I can't imagine coming in with
- 39:06Speaker 1: that bravado when he first got there was he.
- 39:09Speaker 2: He always loves to tell the story that because we
- 39:11Speaker 2: came in together and he was a seventh round pick
- 39:13Speaker 2: and I was undrafted. And by the end of that draft,
- 39:17Speaker 2: I wasn't even watching, so I remember, you know, my
- 39:19Speaker 2: agent called me. He's like, hey, they drafted this guy's
- 39:21Speaker 2: a quarterback. But I don't. I mean, he's not really
- 39:22Speaker 2: an NFL quarterback, so you don't really need to worry
- 39:24Speaker 2: about him. And so then, you know, Julian loves to
- 39:26Speaker 2: tell the story. He was at Kent State and I
- 39:28Speaker 2: was coming from Cleveland, so we were on the same
- 39:30Speaker 2: flight together, and I'm like, this guy ain't playing quarterback.
- 39:33Speaker 2: A little did I know he was going to become,
- 39:35Speaker 2: you know, the most productive NFL receiver in playoff history.
- 39:39Speaker 2: But we used to, you know, we were just guys
- 39:41Speaker 2: trying to make the team, and so at night we
- 39:43Speaker 2: would go come back from training camp and we'd be studying.
- 39:45Speaker 2: I'd be calling plays and Julian would be, you know,
- 39:48Speaker 2: lining up in the hotel room and we'd go get
- 39:49Speaker 2: extra reps in the bubble. And really, you know, Julian
- 39:52Speaker 2: was kind of a late bloomer in a sense because
- 39:54Speaker 2: it kind of took four or five years. It was
- 39:56Speaker 2: really after I left that Julian kind of became the guy.
- 39:59Speaker 2: You know. Welker moved on to Denver and Julian notoriously,
- 40:03Speaker 2: you know, followed Tom around, was like, hey, I'm here
- 40:05Speaker 2: if you need me to catch for you. And it
- 40:07Speaker 2: all paid off. And that was Julian's kind of relentlessness,
- 40:11Speaker 2: you know, finding its way through there. And and but
- 40:13Speaker 2: it's funny. I remember when we were rookies. You know,
- 40:16Speaker 2: I'm just trying to learn the playbook and understand what
- 40:18Speaker 2: I was supposed to do, and we break the huddle
- 40:19Speaker 2: and he sometimes he looked at me like, hey, what
- 40:21Speaker 2: do I got? And I'd be like alpha blueau and
- 40:23Speaker 2: I'm like you figure it out about all, that's right.
- 40:26Speaker 2: So but we had some late night walk throughs in
- 40:28Speaker 2: that hotel, the residence in Foxborough, and you know, like
- 40:32Speaker 2: I said, I had a unique perspective. I was here
- 40:34Speaker 2: four years, gone for a few came back and you
- 40:36Speaker 2: know that in that short time, Julian became a leader
- 40:39Speaker 2: on the team, a go to guy. One of these
- 40:41Speaker 2: guys who really you know, was mister New England. And
- 40:44Speaker 2: so you know, it's always it's always fun to reminisce
- 40:47Speaker 2: of you know, the times before you know he was
- 40:49Speaker 2: big time, but he was you know, you always saw
- 40:52Speaker 2: that he had the work ethic and and wasn't going
- 40:55Speaker 2: to let any opportunity pass him by.
- 40:57Speaker 1: About Gronk, do you have a good Gronk story out
- 41:00Speaker 1: in the town with Gronk or just living the life
- 41:02Speaker 1: of Gronk, Because I think he's one of the biggest
- 41:04Speaker 1: person Outi's this sport has ever seen.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Gronk's just to me is just that
- 41:08Speaker 2: big kid who just loves loves playing football, loves life.
- 41:11Speaker 2: And I think a lot is made like, oh, he's
- 41:13Speaker 2: this big meathead. He's one of the most sweet gentle guys.
- 41:16Speaker 2: I mean, we saw him recently at Tom's Hall of
- 41:19Speaker 2: Fame induction here and he came up to my wife
- 41:23Speaker 2: and he's like, I'll never forget you know, when he
- 41:24Speaker 2: got hurt the one year you know he's living on
- 41:26Speaker 2: his own, we offered him, we cooked him. He's like,
- 41:29Speaker 2: I'll never forget you made me that lasagna that one
- 41:31Speaker 2: time when I when I was hurt. And it's like, wow,
- 41:33Speaker 2: like I kind of forgot about that, but just it
- 41:36Speaker 2: just shows you the type of person he is, and
- 41:38Speaker 2: you know, I talk about it's been pretty cool for
- 41:40Speaker 2: my son to kind of grow up around these guys.
- 41:43Speaker 2: And I have a great picture we were coming back
- 41:45Speaker 2: from Tom's retirement party and they're on the front of
- 41:48Speaker 2: the boat. You talk about the trio, Gronk Edelman and
- 41:51Speaker 2: Ammondola and right sandwich between those those three who are
- 41:55Speaker 2: recovering from the night before. As my son just laying
- 41:57Speaker 2: there next to these guys, and but they're so you know,
- 42:00Speaker 2: so genuine. And he knew right away when Rob came
- 42:03Speaker 2: that this is a once in a lifetime player. I mean,
- 42:07Speaker 2: I've played long enough that you go out on the
- 42:09Speaker 2: field and you're like, this guy was built to play football.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Rob was one of those guys, Calvin Johnson, Julius Pepper's,
- 42:14Speaker 2: JJ Watt, Derrick Henry. You go out there and you're like, man,
- 42:17Speaker 2: am I really playing the same.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Sport as we got the same species? Yeah?
- 42:21Speaker 2: Right, But I'll never forget I actually got to throw
- 42:24Speaker 2: him his first touchdown pass in the season. Yeah. I
- 42:27Speaker 2: mean it wasn't regular season, but in the preseason I
- 42:29Speaker 2: threw him a seam and I remember thinking, like I
- 42:32Speaker 2: came off the play action and I looked and I'm like, wow,
- 42:35Speaker 2: he's thirty yards away. It looks like he's ten yards away,
- 42:38Speaker 2: this huge, massive target and he always brings that up.
- 42:41Speaker 2: And then another one. I actually threw him his pass
- 42:43Speaker 2: to set the tight end record for receiving yards because
- 42:46Speaker 2: it was at the end of the twenty eleven season
- 42:49Speaker 2: and it was Jimmy Graham and him were going back
- 42:51Speaker 2: and forth, back and forth, and we're kind of monitoring,
- 42:54Speaker 2: monitoring it during the game and it was kind of
- 42:56Speaker 2: a blowout and I was in there kind of running
- 42:57Speaker 2: out the clock, and all of a sudden, Bill O'Brien's like, hey,
- 43:00Speaker 2: Gronk needs five yards to set the record. Is okay?
- 43:04Speaker 1: We always think that? Does that? What exist?
- 43:06Speaker 2: Yeah? And you would not think with Bill, but Bill
- 43:08Speaker 2: was on top of it. He knew. And they're like,
- 43:11Speaker 2: we're just gonna send him out there and let him
- 43:12Speaker 2: just run a five yard hitch, just throw it to him. Well,
- 43:15Speaker 2: a five yard hitch versus press coverage converts and that's
- 43:18Speaker 2: usually a route that a tight end would run. So
- 43:21Speaker 2: I'm like under center, I'm like, oh my god, it's press.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Is he going to know what to do? And you
- 43:24Speaker 2: go back and I kind of double clutch it, he
- 43:27Speaker 2: converts it, I throw a fade, he gets his speed down,
- 43:29Speaker 2: which was even that was kind of questionable. So we
- 43:31Speaker 2: had to get to the line of scrimmage and snapped
- 43:33Speaker 2: the next play just to make sure a got in
- 43:35Speaker 2: the record books.
- 43:37Speaker 1: And he did it all right. A few more because
- 43:39Speaker 1: I don't know if you overlapped with him, and I
- 43:41Speaker 1: don't like the resumes out here, but I think when
- 43:43Speaker 1: you see these these clips online, if people just naming
- 43:46Speaker 1: random athletes from like different generations, I think one day
- 43:49Speaker 1: someone's just going to say Jimmy Garoppolo and everyone's gonna say, yeah,
- 43:53Speaker 1: Jimmy went to a super Bowl and Jimmy was with
- 43:55Speaker 1: the Patriot won Super Bowl. It's like, did you ever
- 43:57Speaker 1: overlap with Jimmy? What kind of guy is Jimmy? Because
- 43:59Speaker 1: I think he's also one of these people that you
- 44:01Speaker 1: project he's just like Hollywood playboy. But every time I've
- 44:03Speaker 1: dealt with him, that is not the case.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Yeah, not the case. So Jimmy and I have had
- 44:07Speaker 2: an interesting dance. We actually were traded for each other,
- 44:10Speaker 2: which that's even a long story because I get a
- 44:12Speaker 2: call from Kyle He's like, hey, we're trading you back
- 44:13Speaker 2: to New England. And I was like, what, I'm out
- 44:15Speaker 2: buying a Halloween costume with my son. He's like, yeah,
- 44:18Speaker 2: they're trading us, Jimmy, and Bill wants you to go back,
- 44:20Speaker 2: and I was like all right, cool. And then you
- 44:21Speaker 2: get the call there that night and Bill's like, look,
- 44:23Speaker 2: I mean we're going to trade for you, but like
- 44:25Speaker 2: it would really benefit you and us if you just
- 44:27Speaker 2: like ask them to release you and come sign it.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Come come here and sign you, because you know, like
- 44:32Speaker 2: compensory competitory picks. And I'm like, all right, Bill, whatever,
- 44:35Speaker 2: and that's fine. So we kind of crossed, you know,
- 44:38Speaker 2: coasts in that in that trade, and then met him
- 44:42Speaker 2: at the Derby a few years later, and then oddly
- 44:45Speaker 2: enough last year we end up being teammates in Vegas
- 44:47Speaker 2: and yeah, you said, everyone has this Hollywood heart throb
- 44:51Speaker 2: kind of view of Jimmy, and he's really just this sweet,
- 44:54Speaker 2: gentle guy, and you know, he's got these looks and
- 44:56Speaker 2: he would always try to get me to do abs
- 44:58Speaker 2: with them at the end of the day and I'm like, Jimmy,
- 45:00Speaker 2: I've been married for fourteen years, Like you're still out
- 45:02Speaker 2: on the prow I'm good. I don't need that. I'm
- 45:05Speaker 2: going home to my wife and she doesn't care if
- 45:07Speaker 2: I have abs or not. But I remember, yeah, I
- 45:10Speaker 2: had the dad bod, like like Mahomes and he's got
- 45:13Speaker 2: the anti dad bod. But you know, when you got
- 45:15Speaker 2: to live up to that that persona, you got to
- 45:17Speaker 2: have the look.
- 45:20Speaker 1: I think it's it's actually interesting because I go through
- 45:22Speaker 1: your career college, you were the starter, and if I'm
- 45:25Speaker 1: not mistaken, Kirk Cousins was the backup.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Well, my junior year, Nick Foles was my backup and
- 45:29Speaker 2: then he in a transfer to Arizona, and my senior year,
- 45:32Speaker 2: Kirk was the backup. So we had a pretty good
- 45:34Speaker 2: quarterback room my junior year and then you know, I
- 45:37Speaker 2: left and then eventually Kirk ended up taking over over
- 45:39Speaker 2: there in Michigan State.
- 45:40Speaker 1: That's a young college aged Kirk Cousins like.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Oh man, exactly what you see now just a little
- 45:46Speaker 2: bit less. I mean, Kirk was just, you know, right
- 45:50Speaker 2: by the book, exactly what you would expect from him.
- 45:52Speaker 2: You know, kind of he calls it his dad, you know,
- 45:55Speaker 2: dork swag or whatever. But imagine that before he was
- 45:58Speaker 2: a dad, he was even he was even more so.
- 46:01Speaker 2: But you know, he worked hard, and you know he's
- 46:03Speaker 2: had a tremendous career. I mean you look at what
- 46:05Speaker 2: you know, he was like a one star recruit, didn't
- 46:07Speaker 2: really have any offers till coach D'Antonio became the new
- 46:10Speaker 2: head coach. They offered him, and he's just worked his
- 46:12Speaker 2: way up and had a tremendous career.
- 46:14Speaker 1: All right, My last one is a head coach, and
- 46:16Speaker 1: it's not Belichick. It's a guy who hasn't for whatever reason,
- 46:20Speaker 1: hasn't been able to win the big one. And he's
- 46:22Speaker 1: as brilliant an offensive mine in the league. And you
- 46:25Speaker 1: play you played for him when he first got his
- 46:28Speaker 1: first head coaching job in San Francisco. Do you have
- 46:31Speaker 1: any Kyle Shanahan stories to tell us the genius or
- 46:34Speaker 1: the mad genius of the guy out there in San Francisco.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Man, I've learned so much from Kyle. I mean, really,
- 46:39Speaker 2: that was my first true opportunity as a starting quarterback
- 46:42Speaker 2: in Cleveland when he was the offensive coordinator and just
- 46:45Speaker 2: trying to learn that West Coast system, something that I
- 46:47Speaker 2: wasn't familiar with, and there were some rough times. I mean,
- 46:50Speaker 2: I'll never forget playing I think it was Baltimore and
- 46:53Speaker 2: you were running one of these boots, one of these nakeds,
- 46:55Speaker 2: and Kyle always said, like, you got to get your
- 46:57Speaker 2: eyes around because it's your responsibility. If someone blitzing off
- 46:59Speaker 2: the edge and I didn't see it and I got tattooed,
- 47:02Speaker 2: I could not breathe. I threw the ball away and
- 47:04Speaker 2: I come over the sideline and I'm like literally like
- 47:07Speaker 2: trying to trying to take a breath. He's like, you
- 47:09Speaker 2: know that was your fault, right, you know that's your fault.
- 47:11Speaker 2: That's yours. And I'm like, Kyle, that's not helping right now,
- 47:13Speaker 2: that's not not the encouraging words he's But then he
- 47:17Speaker 2: really cool, He's all right, let's go, let's talk about
- 47:19Speaker 2: the next series. I'm thinking this, and he is that
- 47:21Speaker 2: mad genius. Like we were talking with Matt Lighton, like
- 47:24Speaker 2: walking past Bill Belichick in the hall is an awkward situation,
- 47:28Speaker 2: and that's for one reason. And walking past Kyle Shanahan,
- 47:31Speaker 2: you can just see it's like Zach galfanekis and the
- 47:35Speaker 2: hangover when he's trying like Kyle's walking, yeah, Kyle's walking
- 47:38Speaker 2: down the hallway. It's like he doesn't even see you
- 47:40Speaker 2: there because he's like, you know, there's x's and oh's
- 47:42Speaker 2: going across his brain and and he got better when
- 47:45Speaker 2: he got to when he got to San Francisco. But
- 47:47Speaker 2: I remember in Cleveland like walking by, like what's up, Kyle,
- 47:49Speaker 2: and he'd like and you just keep walking and they're like, man,
- 47:52Speaker 2: he's he's focused. But I learned so much about you know,
- 47:54Speaker 2: offense and really zone defense from him. He was obsessed
- 47:58Speaker 2: with how you know, the past game can affect zone defense.
- 48:01Speaker 2: And when I was there in San Francisco, we had
- 48:03Speaker 2: Robert Salah was the defensive coordinator who now head co coach,
- 48:06Speaker 2: and you know, I learned so much about you know,
- 48:08Speaker 2: quarterback fundamentals from him. And you know, you've seen how
- 48:12Speaker 2: he's been able to evolve his scheme over time, and
- 48:16Speaker 2: you know it's it truly is a mad genius.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Is Purty the perfect fit for him, because it's like
- 48:21Speaker 1: Purdy almost seems like I don't want to say robotic,
- 48:24Speaker 1: that sounds insulting, but like Purty is just he gets it,
- 48:27Speaker 1: he sees it, he gets it. He's not trying to
- 48:28Speaker 1: do too much, and he delivers well.
- 48:30Speaker 2: The one thing that I always you know, I don't
- 48:32Speaker 2: want to say fought Kyle on but I was. I
- 48:34Speaker 2: was trained in this Patriots system where the quarterback had
- 48:36Speaker 2: a lot to handle with the line of scrimmage, and
- 48:38Speaker 2: I wanted to know where's the rotation. I wanted to
- 48:41Speaker 2: know who the mic point is and and that's kind
- 48:43Speaker 2: of how I was trained. And so going to Kyle,
- 48:45Speaker 2: he wants to take all of that off the quarterback's plate,
- 48:47Speaker 2: and to me, it took me a while to understand,
- 48:50Speaker 2: like the benefits of that. And when you see him
- 48:53Speaker 2: get a brock Party who knows nothing but Kyle's system.
- 48:58Speaker 2: I kind of said it when we were on the show.
- 48:59Speaker 2: You know, going into the Super Bowl, brock Party is
- 49:03Speaker 2: Kyle's avatar out on the field. And Kyle, you know,
- 49:05Speaker 2: he would talk because so much for me was about
- 49:07Speaker 2: the game plan. He's like, don't worry about I'll call
- 49:09Speaker 2: to play at the right I got it. I got it,
- 49:11Speaker 2: And that that made me nervous because it's like I
- 49:14Speaker 2: want it to be in my hands. I want to know,
- 49:15Speaker 2: I want to change the play at the line of tremage.
- 49:17Speaker 2: That's just how I learned, you know, professional football. But
- 49:20Speaker 2: you know he's had purty from the infancy stage, and
- 49:23Speaker 2: he's molded him exactly how he wants him. And when
- 49:26Speaker 2: I watched Brock play, I realized that's exactly the guy.
- 49:30Speaker 2: And I think even Jimmy, you know, Jimmy had success
- 49:32Speaker 2: with Kyle, but you know Jimmy would add live at times,
- 49:35Speaker 2: and I think that would drive Kyle insane. And Kyle's
- 49:38Speaker 2: found a guy in Brock who literally, if if Kyle said, hey, Brock,
- 49:42Speaker 2: on this play, when you take a five step drop
- 49:43Speaker 2: and throw it out of bounce to the left, Brock
- 49:47Speaker 2: would say, okay, coach, and he would do it. And
- 49:48Speaker 2: it's been really and like he said, it's not an insult.
- 49:51Speaker 2: It's just believing in your coach, believing in the system.
- 49:53Speaker 2: And it's been a proven thing that they've got going.
- 49:56Speaker 2: And you know, we talk about it. You know, every
- 50:00Speaker 2: team ends the year the same way except one team.
- 50:02Speaker 2: It's a crash landing. Whether you don't make the playoffs
- 50:05Speaker 2: or you lose in the Super Bowl, there's only one
- 50:07Speaker 2: team that's going to be happy at the end of
- 50:08Speaker 2: the year, and that's the team who wins Super Bowl.
- 50:09Speaker 2: And so if you're putting yourself in the position and
- 50:12Speaker 2: I heard Peyton talk about it last night. I'd rather be,
- 50:14Speaker 2: you know, the first loser and lose in the super
- 50:17Speaker 2: Bowl and then not make the playoffs at all. And
- 50:19Speaker 2: you're just a few plays away. And I'm sure you
- 50:21Speaker 2: know they continue. They have a really good team, and
- 50:23Speaker 2: Kyle continues to evolve as a coach. They'll always be
- 50:26Speaker 2: in contention.
- 50:27Speaker 1: All right, as we wrap have the Green Bay Packers
- 50:30Speaker 1: called you yet, as Jordan Love is injured and we're
- 50:32Speaker 1: looking at Malik Willison Sean Clifford on the death.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Chart, haven't got that call yet.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Nope, okay, all right, phone is open. And if Goody's listening,
- 50:40Speaker 1: this is a guy who could still sling it, although
- 50:42Speaker 1: he does have Monday seventh grade football practices, so he
- 50:45Speaker 1: might have to work around that. That's the will figure.
- 50:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I always said, you know some of these guys
- 50:49Speaker 2: I know around the league. I'm like, hey, remember when
- 50:51Speaker 2: Josh McCown was like the practice squad quarterback from Afar.
- 50:55Speaker 2: I'm like, hey, just zoom me into some meetings something now,
- 50:57Speaker 2: I'll fly out. I'll be ready to go.
- 50:59Speaker 1: I can help you. Brian. I so appreciate this. You
- 51:02Speaker 1: killed it week one. You were the only person I
- 51:04Speaker 1: saw picked the Patriots to win, and then you had
- 51:06Speaker 1: the data and the information to break it down. I
- 51:08Speaker 1: know you're new at this media thing, but I can
- 51:10Speaker 1: listen to your stories for days and I so appreciate
- 51:12Speaker 1: you joining the season with Peter Schrager. What an awesome
- 51:15Speaker 1: experience this was.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Yeah, anytime Peter, anything for you. Man, You're awesome.
- 51:19Speaker 1: You're awesome too, dude. All right, guys, Brian Hoyer amazing.
- 51:23Speaker 1: And the Patriots they've they want to know, but let's
- 51:25Speaker 1: see if they can keep it going next week. Brian
- 51:34Speaker 1: Hoyer was great. I love stories. I also love that,
- 51:37Speaker 1: like he was there and he was there all summer,
- 51:39Speaker 1: and he was there for the preseason, he was there
- 51:42Speaker 1: for the build up the week one and he goes
- 51:44Speaker 1: on television and he's like, Yeah, the Patrit's trying to
- 51:45Speaker 1: win this game. Meanwhile, I'm sitting with my Tommy Bahama
- 51:49Speaker 1: shorts on on the beach with a cigar in my mouth.
- 51:51Speaker 1: I'm like, Oh, the Bengals have Jamar Chase and Joe Burrow.
- 51:53Speaker 1: They're gonna win. Sometimes it matters who's on the ground,
- 51:56Speaker 1: who can get a vibe for a team, and Hoyer
- 51:58Speaker 1: new and I love that. Kyle Shanahan. Stuff.
- 52:01Speaker 2: What a quote?
- 52:02Speaker 1: Rock Perty is like the avatar for Kyle Shanahan. Good stuff, Hoyer.
- 52:07Speaker 1: I'll probably have him on again. That was really good.
- 52:10Speaker 1: The season with Peter Schrager delivering results is presented by
- 52:13Speaker 1: Uber Eats. We've done this now for two years. It
- 52:15Speaker 1: is time for delivering results presented by our friends at
- 52:18Speaker 1: uber eats, and I'm going to say that the individual
- 52:21Speaker 1: who delivered the results this week was Baker Mayfield down
- 52:24Speaker 1: in Tampa Bay. Bake Baker washed as everyone else, picked
- 52:28Speaker 1: the Atlanta Falcons in the division. They went out there
- 52:30Speaker 1: and was absolutely electric. Twenty four to thirty four touchdown passes,
- 52:33Speaker 1: two to Mike Evans, one to a rookie getting his
- 52:36Speaker 1: first touch in McMillan, and then of course one to
- 52:39Speaker 1: Chris Godwin. NFC South Champions. Year after year after year.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Hath been the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and yet for some
- 52:45Speaker 1: reason everyone thought they would fall apart after they committed
- 52:48Speaker 1: to Baker. Baker Mayfield delivering results presented by Uber eats,
- 52:52Speaker 1: where you can almost almost get anything for game day.
- 52:56Speaker 1: It's the official on demand delivery partner of the NFL
- 52:59Speaker 1: Order now presented by Uber eats get almost almost anything
- 53:03Speaker 1: for game day. And with that we head to Week
- 53:05Speaker 1: two season. It's a Thursday night game right around the corner,
- 53:08Speaker 1: and it's a good one. Bill's Dolphins, folks. We'll be
- 53:11Speaker 1: with you next week. Thanks for listening. The Season with
