Transcript
- 0:00Earthkeeper really does explore what freedom means to you in
- 0:03like a way because it's so cathartic.
- 0:05There's so many like releases, but it's also like we're
- 0:08acknowledging the pain and we're acknowledging the discord as
- 0:11well. But like, how do you find
- 0:13freedom within a society that wasn't created for you?
- 0:17And how do you find that freedom that you can then share and like
- 0:21carry forward to make change, like real change that like
- 0:25really lasts? You need to feel that freedom
- 0:27inside your soul first, regardless of what's going on
- 0:30around you. And I feel like Earthkeeper is a
- 0:31lot about just like finding that sense of like inner peace and
- 0:35release to it's like a powerful thing to be able to feel that in
- 0:40the midst of everything that's meant to make you feel
- 0:42powerless. What's up everybody?
- 0:51It's Kefi from ghostcultman.com. I am stoked to be once again
- 0:54joined by one of my favorite groups of people of all time,
- 0:57Pink Shift. How are you doing?
- 0:59Oh. That's so sweet.
- 1:01We're doing good. You're not supposed to have
- 1:03favorites when you're a journalist, but I don't care
- 1:06because my show my my thing, my rules.
- 1:08But you know, I, I said offline that I'm meeting you in Chicago
- 1:12at Riot Fest a couple of years ago and doing that last
- 1:15interview kind of on the spot. And we made a not great
- 1:19situation fun. And I love anyone who can roll
- 1:21like that. And we're going to be lifelong
- 1:23fans and friends. And I'm very proud of you guys
- 1:27because I think there's been a huge growth in the band from the
- 1:32debut record to now, which again, this whole period of time
- 1:35since we last met, all these things have been happening and
- 1:38you know, all these festivals and tours and new music.
- 1:41So I just, I hope this turns out to be the celebration for you.
- 1:45I hope it is. As to we've been, we've been
- 1:47building up to it. Right on.
- 1:49And yeah, of course. And a shout out eternally to
- 1:52hopeless because you know, it's, it's very rare.
- 1:55We live in a really crazy time in the music business where
- 1:59everything is very, feels very thin and not on great standing.
- 2:03So if you have a label behind you that's supportive and, and
- 2:06encouraging and giving you what you need to get your next to
- 2:10your next level and your next phase of your artistry, I'm
- 2:13going to always Rep that label and support them.
- 2:15So hopeless is we had a long time relationship with them.
- 2:18They just bought Fat Wreck, which I was like, so surprised I
- 2:21knew was coming and, and the way I was.
- 2:24I'm proud that I have worked with them a long time as I was
- 2:27such a Fat Wreck fan and I'm glad that like everything they
- 2:30did is like very artist forward. So that's you really don't see
- 2:34that anymore. Yeah, we've had a great time
- 2:37with Hopeless. We've been really fortunate.
- 2:39Indeed oh, I love the loudest beauty flag nice that's fire.
- 2:45So let's talk about Earthkeeper, right?
- 2:46It's album #2 and you know, you never, every band says like this
- 2:51new records our best thing ever. But I really think this is
- 2:53actually your best thing. Like I love the debut and I love
- 2:58those songs and they, you know, are so much more powerful live,
- 3:01I think. But this record's like a
- 3:03different, a whole different beast.
- 3:04So I wanted to talk about kind of the headspace you were in
- 3:08coming into writing it because you know, there, you know, you
- 3:11put pressure on yourself. You have to be the first fan of
- 3:14your band no matter what anyone else says.
- 3:16Like you obviously want to please people, but you gotta,
- 3:18you have to be feeling it initially for it to work, right?
- 3:22So talk about that for a second. Yeah, I mean, we were touring a
- 3:25lot after Love Me Forever came out and not to say that we got
- 3:31burnt out touring, but I think that we were just like kind of
- 3:34no breaks for like a few years. So like we we did Suraksha
- 3:40during that time. It was kind of just like, all
- 3:43right, three songs, you know, and then we got to just get back
- 3:46out and we were on tour up until like from the studio tour,
- 3:52studio tour. So we took a break in like 2024
- 3:56just to like recalibrate and we had to kind of find each other
- 4:01again after all that because, you know, like you get back on
- 4:05earth and we've all got our own like family, things like moving
- 4:10or, you know, like friendship. Like there's so much shit going
- 4:13on at home that, you know, you kind of just can't really have
- 4:17the headspace for when you're working really hard.
- 4:20So we all took a beat to do that.
- 4:23And then to get back on the same page, we like got a cabin and it
- 4:28worked out. We were able to really connect
- 4:30there. I don't know if you guys want
- 4:32to. Yeah, 'cause like we were in a
- 4:35spot where we're in, like, different places mentally and
- 4:39creatively. And it's funny that you say how
- 4:42like, you know, first and foremost, like artists, like you
- 4:45want to make music that you're a fan of and like be like a fan of
- 4:49like your own artistry and everything.
- 4:50And I feel like there was a point where we really weren't
- 4:53really, you know, happy with what we were creating.
- 4:56I mean, like obviously like we liked it because we were making
- 4:59it, but there was a lot we. Were getting frustrated with it.
- 5:03Yeah, exactly. Like, initially it was like, all
- 5:05right, cool. Yeah.
- 5:06And then there was a point where we're just like, oh, this just
- 5:08kind of makes me upset because we couldn't figure out really
- 5:13like why we didn't like it. And we were.
- 5:16Yeah, I was going to say, we had to like break out of what we
- 5:19normally do like a lot. Like we had to change a lot of
- 5:23our approach. Right.
- 5:24A lot of the first record was written on a, on Logic, kind of
- 5:28like directly recording straight onto the computer.
- 5:31You know, I think just kind of approaching the second record in
- 5:34that way definitely led to some, like Martin said, like not like,
- 5:37not like we hated it, but it was just like, this feels like we're
- 5:40like, like we kind of outgrew that approach.
- 5:42So kind of getting a cabin together and really just trying
- 5:46to write these songs live first, just jamming them out, the three
- 5:50of us trying out different ideas for hours until like the early
- 5:54mornings, early hours of the morning, because we would, we
- 5:58would, we were night owls during that cabin trip.
- 6:00It really allowed for some news, some new songs to breathe and
- 6:05and ideas that we brought there to like take on a way different
- 6:08life than they would have if we just slap them on to record them
- 6:11straight into the computer. From the job, yeah.
- 6:13And then doing it like more like that.
- 6:15I think we just didn't overthink it as much because it's just
- 6:19like, OK, this felt good when we were playing it, so let's just
- 6:22like put it down and like, let's do something nice to move on
- 6:25from that, you know? Because like when it's like in
- 6:28the DAW, you can really obsess over it, like for years, like
- 6:32people obsessed with a song that they've recorded in a DOF for
- 6:35like 10 years. Like it's just like one thing.
- 6:38All the things that you can fix. Yeah, it's like the drums
- 6:41admirer and I would like look at like a the way a drum is like
- 6:44mapped out on the MIDI like thing.
- 6:46And then we like have this really cool idea for a song and
- 6:49then we like, OK, we have this idea and then we spend like 30
- 6:51minutes just like a dusting different things where, you
- 6:55know, that could be done later. It's like easy to get lost, like
- 6:58the very little things and like forget that, like wait, I had an
- 7:02idea for this song but I'm too busy working on like the first,
- 7:04like the first, the intro. Right.
- 7:06Like for like going off of that one thing at least like for me
- 7:10that we were doing that like I was doing differently is when
- 7:14we're all writing stuff, I would prioritize like what the feel is
- 7:18of like different parts versus exactly like note for note what
- 7:21I'm trying to play. And that like was that was the
- 7:24case up until like we went into the studios who actually record
- 7:27them where it's like, all right, I have a field slash like a
- 7:31specific kind of energy that I want to play during these parts.
- 7:35Sometimes I would have like field setup that I actually
- 7:37wanted to do. Sometimes I would have like
- 7:39extra stuff, but for the most part it'd be like, all right,
- 7:43this is like the basis of what I want to play.
- 7:45Hearing it back over and over, like the demos that we have is
- 7:48like when I would come up with like specific ideas for
- 7:51different things. And then in the studio, we just
- 7:53do like a bunch of takes and piece together the parts that we
- 7:56like best. Yeah, right on.
- 7:57You know, thank you for sharing that.
- 7:59Uh, it's also risky to change what worked before, Hey, this is
- 8:04how we got a record deal and toward the world, but also risky
- 8:07to throw it out the window and say, yeah.
- 8:09That's so right. That's what are we doing and
- 8:12let's do it differently, but but look what came from it, right?
- 8:15So that's positive and does doesn't always work, but you
- 8:18took a risk and that's huge. Like as a creative, right?
- 8:21Like that's a huge thing to be able to like we're gonna get out
- 8:25of our comfort zone and do things differently this time
- 8:27around. That's super brave.
- 8:29It really is because like it's so hard to fly in the fear of
- 8:33everything else. And you know that everything is
- 8:35a tightrope in the business, right?
- 8:38And the world. So like where it's just never
- 8:41ending. So thank you for sharing all
- 8:43that. And I'm glad you got to, you
- 8:45know, kind of do it organically together.
- 8:46That's that's beautiful because you don't see that a lot.
- 8:49Technology is wonderful and it has a lot of uses, but also can
- 8:52take you take the human being out of things.
- 8:54And I know that's a thing you all talked about even on your
- 8:59little podcast series where you were talking about AI, which I
- 9:02thought. Was fantastic blog post.
- 9:05I've been following. I'm telling you, you made a, you
- 9:07made a fan out of me long ago, but I've stayed a fan.
- 9:11So like, I love that that's kind of in it seems like it's on your
- 9:14mind to do things a little more real and raw.
- 9:17And the record sounds real and raw as a result, which I think
- 9:20is fantastic. Thank you.
- 9:22Yeah, I really. Appreciate that.
- 9:24And then there's this kind of thing where I feel like just
- 9:27today we're all kind of under siege, right, where everybody's
- 9:30got their own little battles going on.
- 9:32You mentioned family, your personal struggles, other
- 9:34things. And so there's definitely, it's
- 9:37still catchy, it's still hard, it's fun.
- 9:40But there's some seriousness on this record that I think, you
- 9:43know, not that the other record didn't have it too, but like,
- 9:45yeah, I think it's just like, this is a record I keep waiting
- 9:48for, Like the record that's going to be like a match or a
- 9:51wake up call for people, a Molotov cocktail as a as.
- 9:55I. Keep thinking.
- 9:55I thought about it. The lesson, Oh, we got this
- 9:57terrible government is terrible, economy is terrible, world is
- 10:00terrible. Where's the music that reflects
- 10:03this? And now we're getting it.
- 10:05I think it's it's slowly creeping in the discontent and
- 10:08and the intelligence. That's the thing I always liked
- 10:11about the band is that you bring forth these, you're not
- 10:14preaching, you're just sharing. This is our view, our lens,
- 10:18right? But it's not like super preachy.
- 10:19It's, but it's also, you know, fierce, empowering, all the
- 10:23things it needs to do. So I love these songs.
- 10:25It's there's a, there's a couple that are particular bangers, but
- 10:29I expected bangers. You know, like I came in, I
- 10:31knew, I knew you knew the assignment.
- 10:33So I expected, but it's heavy. It's super heavy.
- 10:36And I know you reflected on that a little bit in some of the the
- 10:40media coverage is that it's it's real heavy.
- 10:43I think it's gonna surprise people.
- 10:45Yeah, we, we, I think it's just like from touring and just
- 10:51getting better individually. Like Paul became like a better
- 10:54instrumentalist, Myron became like a better drummer, I became
- 10:58a better vocalist. And we just have, I think more,
- 11:01more of like a range, Like our range is bigger of like the kind
- 11:05of stuff that we can do. So, you know, there's times at
- 11:08which we get softer than we have gotten in the past, like on
- 11:12Suspended, I feel like that's one where we get like real soft
- 11:15and like intimate. And then there's like stuff
- 11:17that's like heavy as shit. Like, you know, like I think
- 11:21Don't Fight is really cool. It's one of my favorites, but I
- 11:24know we have like a couple other ones.
- 11:25So I think this album is really like a range of just everything
- 11:30that we've like, learned and incorporated into like our own
- 11:33styles of performing. I think it's one of those
- 11:38moments too where we all kind of like saw each other's like I
- 11:42believe like like a street is like we're are all individual or
- 11:45individual growth, but like not just acknowledging it, but like
- 11:48really encouraging it and accepting it.
- 11:50A street to acknowledging that Myron and I are we're like super
- 11:54getting into like the modern metal stuff past couple years
- 11:57and street is like Paul by that 7 string, like my arm, just like
- 12:00try, try that thing that you're thinking of.
- 12:02And we're all like a street that you just learn how to scream.
- 12:05Do it, like try it on this, try it on that.
- 12:07But you also have the capability of having like a really like
- 12:10soft, airy tone. Like, you know, it's like one of
- 12:14those things where where I think the three of us are also just
- 12:16kind of like inviting and drawing those parts out of each
- 12:19other that that made this record sound as as diverse as it really
- 12:23did. Because I, I also, you know,
- 12:25three years ago, four years ago, wouldn't expect a song like I
- 12:27Need a Ride to be paired with a song like Suspended.
- 12:31And to know that we, oh, we wrote that in the same mindset.
- 12:34We wrote that in the same in the same era.
- 12:37Yeah, that's true. We're all like growing together
- 12:41a lot. I think like, like, yeah, like I
- 12:44think we're as we're equally getting heavy and we're equally
- 12:48like, we have more pop stuff. And then we have like the like,
- 12:52you know, like the rock and the grunge and everything there too.
- 12:55But I think we're kind of like going, everybody's like, you're
- 12:57getting heavier, getting heavier.
- 12:58But I'm like, I think we're going kind of like both ways in
- 13:01like a weird way. The range is getting bigger.
- 13:04Yeah, that's good. I mean, you know, again, has to
- 13:06plea, you know, has to satisfy something in you first and then
- 13:09you bring it out to everybody else.
- 13:11But I think they're gonna like the existing fans are gonna dig
- 13:14on some of this more raw stuff. And again, this is the world we
- 13:17live in right now. It's it's bananas.
- 13:20Every single day. I'm like, is this real?
- 13:22Am I real? Is any of this real?
- 13:24Are we living in the Matrix? What is happening?
- 13:26Not in like an ironic way, like a serious Are we OK?
- 13:30I don't feel OK. Are you all OK?
- 13:33This is not OK. Like every day I have this
- 13:36philosophical diatribe with myself.
- 13:38Probably also illness. So look, thanks for that.
- 13:41But like. No, that's so real.
- 13:46I feel like I wake up every day and I like open Instagram or
- 13:50even like turn on the news. Started watching the news on TV
- 13:52and it's just like, Oh my God, wow.
- 13:55Was I just not listening before or is it worse like everyday, I
- 14:02don't know, Elsa like after love me forever, honestly, because
- 14:05like love me forever is like a specific journey.
- 14:07I was like oh like this is like I'm not gonna what if I'm not
- 14:11angry again? But I feel like there's just
- 14:12such a breath of emotion to describe the times that we're
- 14:16going through right now as a society.
- 14:20Like, I don't know, like I, I guess it's a global society
- 14:24fighting fascism on a global scale.
- 14:26Like also just in the United States, which is historically,
- 14:31not historically, but it's always like the propaganda is
- 14:35that this is so it's a free place and the propaganda isn't
- 14:38even really cutting through like it used to.
- 14:42They love that word freedom, but few people really understand it
- 14:46and will serve for it. And you know, all these things,
- 14:51The idea of freedom is what I think people really like.
- 14:54And then they really like it. They like their flags and they
- 14:57like their freedom on paper. And then in reality, they don't
- 15:01want everybody else to have that freedom.
- 15:03Well, it's just me. I meant, I didn't mean all of
- 15:05you. So it's really, and that's like
- 15:08the core of this country is hella offensive that that's just
- 15:11normalized. I don't.
- 15:13And so of course, like I said, I was waiting for music like this
- 15:15album to come along and and smack people a little because
- 15:18you can't, you can't talk, you know, like taking the moral High
- 15:22Road is not working. Speaking softly and
- 15:25intelligently is not working. Facts are not working.
- 15:28Real shit is not working. So we have to just, you know, we
- 15:32got to give him 1A knuckle sandwich.
- 15:34I think, I think like what you're saying kind of like makes
- 15:36me feel like, like I think the record really does Earthkeeper
- 15:41really does explore what freedom means to you in like a way
- 15:44because it's so cathartic. There's so many like releases,
- 15:47but it's also like we're acknowledging the pain and we're
- 15:50acknowledging the discord as well.
- 15:52But like, how do you find freedom within a society that
- 15:56wasn't created for you? And how do you find that freedom
- 16:00that you can then share and like carry forward to make change,
- 16:04like real change that like really lasts?
- 16:07You need to feel that freedom inside your soul first,
- 16:09regardless of what's going on around you.
- 16:11And I feel like Earthkeeper is a lot about just like finding that
- 16:13sense of like inner peace and release to it's like a powerful
- 16:19thing to be able to feel that in the midst of everything that's
- 16:22meant to make you feel powerless.
- 16:23So I think that I think that's a big thing on this record.
- 16:26And I think that might be why it resonates in that way.
- 16:29It resonates for me in that way for sure.
- 16:31Absolutely. I I also, by the way, the planet
- 16:34is actively trying to kill us all the time and we're not
- 16:37paying attention to that either. I'm, I'm dreading another
- 16:41pandemic because I think about the last like 600 days.
- 16:44I didn't get to go to a concert or a show or a festival or, or
- 16:47the movies or anything. And I don't want that coming
- 16:50back. But I just feel like with some
- 16:51of these bozos in charge who don't believe in science, we're
- 16:55going to be screwed again. And, you know, musicians, we got
- 16:58it almost the hardest anybody in the music world because, you
- 17:01know, we're not we're not rocket scientists, We're not curing
- 17:04cancer. We're just, we're helping people
- 17:06on another level that we need. I need.
- 17:08I need shows I don't know about. Yeah.
- 17:10I think you. Do too.
- 17:11I think that like, also like the music space is a really cool
- 17:14space where we have the power to create this bottom to top
- 17:17structure that it is so overpowering.
- 17:21Like you can really shape culture and you can change
- 17:24people's minds and you can create community and you can
- 17:28influence community. So I feel like if, if music, if
- 17:33everybody listened, you know, I mean, if, if we really take it
- 17:37seriously, it is really a wonderful portal and a wonderful
- 17:41space to really create change. And I genuinely believe that
- 17:44because it's like, it's like you have to break the prison in your
- 17:48mind in order to be be able to see leave in the matrix.
- 17:51Like, you know, you had to like you had to breakthrough in order
- 17:55to see the big picture. And I think it's a lot of it's a
- 17:58lot of like music really can take you there.
- 18:01Music can take you to a place where you feel empowered, where
- 18:03you feel together or you feel like even those things that are
- 18:06trying to beat you down, like they feel smaller all of a
- 18:09sudden just because of music. So it's it's a gift to be here.
- 18:13Even all those bozos in charge are like, whatever.
- 18:16We have our community and we have the capacity to shape our
- 18:19community and, and really take part in them and like, protect
- 18:22each other. We protect us, you know?
- 18:25And yeah, I don't know. That's why I'm really grateful
- 18:28to be in this space, like in the music space, Not to like cut you
- 18:31off or anything. No, no, that was great and I
- 18:33want that's what I'm here for. This is the conversations I want
- 18:36to be having with your band. So thank you.
- 18:38And also, I feel like your fans from getting out there and you
- 18:41know, looking into the fan community and, and doing my
- 18:45Reddit research with a grain of salt always, but like, you know,
- 18:48it feels like your fans are willing to come with you on this
- 18:51journey. And that's the best and most
- 18:52gratifying thing is I, like you created this space.
- 18:55Hey, we are a band that talks about these things.
- 18:58We are, we have all the same range of feelings everyone else
- 19:01does, but we talked about these things that are important to us.
- 19:03You did that on the first record.
- 19:04You continue to on on this record.
- 19:07So I'm really pumped for people to hear it all and I do think
- 19:11like the heaviness is again, it's so appreciated.
- 19:15Paul, thank you for getting that baritone guitar out of the case
- 19:18and writing these pillar heavy riffs and new, you know, new
- 19:22metal inspirations. Did did you have like favorite
- 19:25new metal bands going in or did you like rediscover some other
- 19:29ones? Like, Oh, you know, we could do
- 19:30some stuff like that. Had you did you go through
- 19:33memory lane? I.
- 19:34Think definitely. I mean growing up like Linkin
- 19:38Park and Slipknot were like my middle school jams and stuff.
- 19:42Slipknot was a lot was revisited when we started covering ILIS
- 19:46and kind of like I know while we were recording Evil Eye, it
- 19:50reminded our producer of Slipknot and I think that also
- 19:53Catalyst. I forgot me to listen to
- 19:55Slipknot. Yeah.
- 19:57But Myron put me on the loathe couple years back.
- 20:01And I remember listening to that record, I let it in and took
- 20:04everything and it kind of like, like when I was in middle school
- 20:07and it listened to My Chemical Romance, I was just like, I'm
- 20:10piercing. I was like, wow, this is like
- 20:11what I wanted. Like I want to do this.
- 20:12I want to make this kind of that same thing.
- 20:15That same switch in my mind flipped again when I listened to
- 20:18Loathe. I was like, wow, they really
- 20:19made these really heavy, guttural, crazy heavy music
- 20:25accessible to someone like me that I don't really, I don't
- 20:28typically listen to to like crazy heavy stuff like that.
- 20:32But now, now way more primed and excited about the direction that
- 20:39modern metal is going in. And so yeah.
- 20:42And Knock Loose as well. I know Meyer and I've been very
- 20:44into Knock Loose has been in the spirit box and I enjoy I'm
- 20:50enjoying a few songs off the record, but I haven't given it
- 20:52the I want to give it the proper like the proper day to like
- 20:56digest all of it. But.
- 20:57I feel like when you discover a band, it's like there's a day
- 21:01that you like find out about a band and then there's like a day
- 21:03that you discover a band and you just can't like push it for some
- 21:06reason. Even though like, you know, I
- 21:08want everybody to discover us at this at the same time that they
- 21:11find out about us. But it just takes that moment.
- 21:14Right. Sometimes people aren't like
- 21:15ready. Like that's how it was with like
- 21:17knock Loose. My friends in high school used
- 21:20to play with Knock loose. Like when we were in college and
- 21:22hang out, they would be playing knock loose in the car and I
- 21:25didn't get it. Like I just straight up didn't
- 21:27get it. And they put out that in 2021
- 21:31and I saw like literally it was like the Hate 5-6 video, just
- 21:34like the beginning of that. And I was like.
- 21:36Oh. I see, you know, I was just
- 21:40like, okay, like seeing that energy and like seeing like the
- 21:44band interact with each other and like with the crowd.
- 21:46I was like, okay, now, now I'm gonna give it a shot.
- 21:50Like for real? You know what band just clicks
- 21:52for me? I know I told the street for
- 21:53this, but I don't know if I told you my Oasis.
- 21:55Oh really? I.
- 21:57Haven't done. A bit.
- 21:58I haven't done it yet. It just clicked.
- 22:01I was like, I get why everybody freaked out when they came back.
- 22:05Now it's a good ticket. I did not expect you to say
- 22:09Oasis. There's I really thought you
- 22:12were gonna say Deftones there, but OK.
- 22:15No, I love Oasis unapologetically.
- 22:18I'm shocked they lasted this handful.
- 22:21You know, the European shows have worked out so well, I'm
- 22:24pretty sure. The most beer in a stadium?
- 22:27Yeah, yeah. Like they're much bigger in
- 22:30Europe, especially Western Europe than America, right.
- 22:33But like, it's wild. And I know the nostalgia is a
- 22:36thing, but also at the same time, Live Nation, Evil Live
- 22:39Nation just put out a whole thing about like, hey, modern
- 22:42metal and hardcore bands, most of whom are inspired by new
- 22:46metal, interestingly enough, are like, pushing ticket sales for
- 22:49heavy music fans. And I was like, you know, they
- 22:51have the research. At least they can point to it.
- 22:53But yeah, not loose, you know, I'm happy for them.
- 22:57Spirit boxes, Rad. I hear a lot of stuff in bands
- 23:01like Knock Loose and Spirit Box and even Poppy where like
- 23:05they're doing a lot of the 90s, mid 90s new metal, like that
- 23:09first big wave of new metal bands are suddenly beloved again
- 23:14and or unretiring, like system headlining, you know, stadiums,
- 23:18even if they don't want to do a hundred of them, which they
- 23:20easily could. I like that they're doing a
- 23:23handful and then, you know, whatever, a full tour somewhere
- 23:25else cuz you know, they have to stay getting along.
- 23:28And that is, you guys know it's hard.
- 23:30It's hard to do, But I, I think this influences killer is also
- 23:34still a lot of the other stuff, pop punk and and again, you
- 23:38talked about these softer, more intimate songs and it so that
- 23:40brings me to my next thing. When we first met, you guys were
- 23:43playing clubs and then festivals and we talked about that.
- 23:46Right. So to follow up on a question
- 23:48three years later, let's talk about now.
- 23:50Like, you know, will some of these chiller songs work in a
- 23:55big, big setting? Will they go over?
- 23:58Yeah, Club. What do you think?
- 23:59I think it'll be great. I'll be fine.
- 24:02I think that sound great. I think that's not awesome,
- 24:04honestly. Like we wrote all of this stuff
- 24:07just like having in mind that we were going to be playing them to
- 24:09people, which is new because I think everything else before we
- 24:13were during the pandemic, like like love me forever and stuff.
- 24:16And like all of this, we're like, wow.
- 24:18Like as we're writing it, we're like, we're so excited to play
- 24:20this to an audience. And no matter how big it is, I
- 24:22feel like we always kind of do the same.
- 24:24Like we're always like very happy to play our songs in any
- 24:27kind of room. Honestly, I think they've been
- 24:30working out because we just, we opened up for Gaslight on that
- 24:33tour and those are some pretty big rooms and it was super fun
- 24:38to play our songs there. They sounded just as good as
- 24:40they did in the tiny room. So I feel like it'll be good.
- 24:43Like, I don't know, how do you think about that?
- 24:45We're excited because like whenever, you know, like
- 24:48whenever we write new music and put out new music, there is that
- 24:52entire sequence of events has happened and like, and then
- 24:56what's next is all right, now we have to play it live.
- 24:59I get really excited about doing things that are specific to like
- 25:03a live version of this song. So it's just like, you only
- 25:07really get this version of this song if you come to a show, you
- 25:11know? And I also really love when like
- 25:13artists do that in general. Where they either it's like a
- 25:17really cool intro or they just like break up the song to like
- 25:21put something in the middle or like just anything unexpected or
- 25:25even like sometimes like artists will just do something like
- 25:29completely different for like the same songs.
- 25:32Yeah, Foo Fighters. They play like one song for like
- 25:3415 minutes just because they're like fucking around.
- 25:38That question reminded me of just a couple days ago.
- 25:41Myron and I went to go see my Chem at MetLife Stadium and
- 25:46Thursday opened for that set. And in their set, they I think
- 25:50they typically play this, but they they play the song called
- 25:52the song brought to you by a falling bomb.
- 25:56And it's like it's just like the it's like a just a piano and
- 25:59vocal song and the piano is playing over the track.
- 26:01Like to think that in this huge stadium for Thursday to be
- 26:06playing like their they're they're like crazy metal 4 set
- 26:10to just kind of just dip into this like, you know, the
- 26:14instrumentalist walk off stage. It's just Jeff and his Mike such
- 26:19like. Like on his knees.
- 26:20On his knees, it felt so intimate even though he was like
- 26:2310 miles away to, you know, to see their, their range, their
- 26:28their songwriting. Because we had just seen the we
- 26:31had just seen them at autobahr perform the same song.
- 26:34Like 2 days prior. Yeah, we also watched them a
- 26:35couple days prior to that. But to see them pull off such a
- 26:40diverse, you know, a display of, of, of instrumental and like
- 26:44vocal emotion in a span of like, you know, 10 minutes is, you
- 26:49know, that's inspiring. You know, just to know that we,
- 26:52we've actually kind of done some, you know, we kind of
- 26:54actually now I think about it on our very first tour.
- 26:57A treat. Play in a breath, which is just
- 27:00vocals and piano. So I guess we're I completely
- 27:03forgot that we're not actual strangers to that.
- 27:04But it's just one of those things where it's like, wow,
- 27:06like a quiet song. I at least personally will
- 27:08always hit in the middle of something that's so heavy, like
- 27:11late, like some of the set like Thursdays where it's like heavy
- 27:15emotionally. That's wild.
- 27:16I'm so stoked that my Cameron and Thursday, who are bands that
- 27:21I saw in tiny clubs, struggle to draw.
- 27:23Anyone have had this? Incredible blow up and and
- 27:28prompts to Mike him for taking Thursday with them right.
- 27:31They're they're state homies and that's so cool as we wind this
- 27:36down and I want to give you back your time.
- 27:39So we got the record coming out soon on Hopeless Records and
- 27:41what out? What else is going on that you
- 27:43can talk about touring? Anything else fun and big in the
- 27:48horizon you want to share? Yeah, I mean, so we have a we
- 27:52have a fall tour coming up in October, the Earthkeeper tour.
- 27:56It's going to be like our second big headliner ever.
- 27:59Like it's going to be like kind of like Love Me Forever, you
- 28:02know, that first headliner after the album.
- 28:03It's going to be like that, except for this album.
- 28:05And we're doing it all across the US and Toronto and we're
- 28:11going to be putting out new music sooner than you think.
- 28:14We're playing CBG Beast Fest in New York, which is exciting.
- 28:17I'm excited for that. It's very, it's an honor to be
- 28:20asked to do something like that Some so to see the other bands
- 28:24there. And yeah, we're gonna, we're
- 28:26gonna be kicking it back into high gear with shows, shows and
- 28:29music Like we're back, we're back.
- 28:32Pink Shift is back. Yeah, I love.
- 28:34It. You know, that's so cool.
- 28:37I grew up in New York, so I went to CBGB's a lot, and I'm kind of
- 28:41bummed and surprised it was allowed to kind of go out of
- 28:43existence. But I think this festival is
- 28:45gonna be killer, and there's a lot of cool stuff happening in
- 28:48the city around it. So, you know, I hope New York
- 28:51treats you all well. I always like to end these, as,
- 28:54you know, with a wild card question.
- 28:56And so it's summertime, and I always think about movies.
- 28:58So do you have a recent favorite movie you've seen?
- 29:01Could be at the theater, could be at home, could be a comfort
- 29:04movie. What's the best movie you saw
- 29:06recently? I saw Sinners a few weeks ago.
- 29:09Ironically, right after this I'm going to see the movie Weapons
- 29:15Weapons. I want to see what happens.
- 29:17I was going to say tenors. I saw that recently too.
- 29:20I've. Been seeing.
- 29:21Anything. I've only been seeing things
- 29:23because like one of my friends, she's been having, they've been
- 29:26having like movie nights and now like my other friend works at
- 29:31like a movie theater like nearby.
- 29:33And he was like, oh, we could just go to the theater and like
- 29:36watch it. And I'm just like, oh shit, I'm
- 29:38excited. I don't know anything about
- 29:39weapons yet. I just know that people are just
- 29:41like, whoa. But Sinners was cool.
- 29:43Sinners is incredible soundtrack is coming out in September.
- 29:46I'm super excited about that and apparently I was told weapons is
- 29:50great and to go in cold not look up anything.
- 29:52Don't watch a trailer, just go. I've only seen the trailer so
- 29:56but I'm I'm stoked to go check it out hopefully this week.
- 29:59So all good. Hopefully on tour you can watch
- 30:02some stuff. Ashrina.
- 30:03Yeah, I watch. On your shows and movies.
- 30:06I watched Big Fat Liar recently. Like again, it's just a classic.
- 30:11It's a good movie. No, it's the guy from Malcolm in
- 30:15the Middle. Oh, big daddy, big daddy.
- 30:20He turns the guy blue. The guy's a skin blue.
- 30:23It's a really funny. Movie.
- 30:25Freaky Mutos. Yeah, yeah, it's.
- 30:30Well, listen, best of luck. Congratulations on everything.
- 30:33I am again not supposed to have favorites, but I'm so proud of
- 30:36you all collectively for this new record.
- 30:38And again, shout out to hopeless and and the PR for doing a great
- 30:42job. Adam Splitter PR and everybody
- 30:43putting us together. Great to see you again.
- 30:45Hopefully next time at a show and be safe on the road.
- 30:49Whatever you do, air tags and whatever you got to do for the
- 30:51gear. And yeah, we'll do it again
- 30:54sometime. Congratulations on this banger
- 30:56record. Awesome.
- 30:57Thank you so much. Thanks.
- 30:59Anytime. Yeah, anytime.
- 31:02Thanks for hanging out with us. We'll see you soon.
- 31:03See ya.
