- 0:15Ladies and gentlemen, your host, my dad, Angel Santana.
- 0:22Two thousand came and the spark was lit. A testimony raw, it wouldn't quit.
- 0:27It's mother's voice, a guiding thread.

- 1:31but don't always talk about openly.
- 1:34How do you trust God when you're walking through health?
- 1:38Journey in your faith that you didn't choose.
- 1:42When the diagnosis comes, when life shifts, when the road ahead feels uncertain,
- 1:48where does faith meet us in that moment?

- 3:39Stephanie, it is truly my honor to have you here with us today,
- 3:42and welcome to Have Faith Let It Begin. How are you?
- 3:45Oh, Angel, thank you so much for that gracious, undeserved introduction.
- 3:52I feel so welcome. You are such a wonderful host, and I'm excited to meet you.
- 3:59I'm such a fan of your podcast. Thank you so much.
- 4:03Well, listen, I'm not going to waste any of our listeners' time because I've
- 4:08been promoting that you're coming.
- 4:09Let us get started with a very, really open question. I'd like you to take us back for a moment.
- 4:17When you were in the earlier influences that shaped, what were the earlier influences
- 4:21that shaped your sense of purpose and direction?
- 4:26Well, right now, I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- 4:31I am a wife, married 43 years to my high school sweetheart, Brashard.
- 4:39And we have a wonderful son, Michael, who is 39 years old.
- 4:43And I grew up in a church-going family.
- 4:49And so I have always, throughout my life, known about God. But through my journey,
- 4:56I have learned to trust God.
- 5:00And those are two very different things.
- 5:03I'm a certified Christian health coach, a cancer conqueror, and a cardiac arrest survivor.
- 5:13And now I have transitioned, because of my health and faith journey,
- 5:19into faith and health ministry.
- 5:24I'm the founder and president of Rebuild Your Temple, God's Way.
- 5:29And I'm also the author of a new Signature Faith and Health collection, five books.
- 5:37So my ministry, my coaching, my books were inspired by my 20-year faith and health journey.
- 5:47Through cancer, years of chronic illness, and a sudden cardiac arrest,
- 5:54my lived experience reshaped my understanding of faith and health and stewardship
- 6:01of life that God has entrusted to us.
- 6:04And through each season of suffering, God showed me He cares about every part
- 6:11of us, our physical health, our emotional health, our mindset, our spiritual health.
- 6:19So my story is one of God lovingly redirecting my life through each season of suffering.
- 6:30I went from striving to control outcomes to learning how to trust God in the middle of uncertainty.
- 6:41And what began as a personal journey of survival became a life of surrender
- 6:48and ultimately stewardship and service.
- 6:52And so today, I help others to restore their bodies, renew their souls.
- 7:01Realign their spirits by understanding how God designed us in His image.
- 7:10Body, soul, and spirit, to live as whole, integrated beings.
- 7:16We are fearfully and wonderfully made by him.
- 7:20He wants each of us to be healthy and whole so that we can serve him and we
- 7:28can walk in the fullness of the abundant life that Christ died for us to have.
- 7:35So when I reflect on my journey, I have loved God deeply and been committed
- 7:42to serving Him faithfully for most of my life, based on my upbringing,
- 7:48regular church attendance.
- 7:51Sunday school, and then as a wife, a mother, an elder in my church, an attorney.
- 8:00I carried all of those roles with a strong sense of responsibility and obligation,
- 8:08but I was also very driven, an overachiever, as you could tell,
- 8:18a perfectionist, people pleaser.
- 8:25And at that time in my life, I believed that perfectionism was a badge of honor
- 8:33and that pushing through challenges was a sign of strength.
- 8:39I approached life with a mindset of perseverance.
- 8:43Externally, I performed well for quite some time. But internally,
- 8:50I was living a life of constant striving, chronic stress, and pressure.
- 8:57Pressure to perform, to meet expectations, to do everything well.
- 9:04Even when the pressure wasn't coming from others, I imposed pressure on myself.
- 9:10I was my own worst critic.
- 9:13And over time, I began to ignore the signals my body, my soul,
- 9:17and my spirit were sending me.
- 9:20I believed that slowing down was not an option, but I was disconnected for what
- 9:26was happening beneath the surface.
- 9:29I equated depletion with faithfulness. and exhaustion with endurance.
- 9:38So I fought through fatigue. I overrode my body's signals.
- 9:45And honestly, I approached my health the same way.
- 9:48I was trying to fix, manage, improve physical symptoms in my own understanding
- 9:57instead of trying to understand what my body,
- 10:01my soul, in my spirit were communicating.
- 10:04I knew I wasn't well, and then everything changed.
- 10:09God stepped in and redirected my life and changed my understanding of faith and health.
- 10:20So my journey began in 2006.
- 10:25I was doing extremely well in my career.
- 10:29Partner in a major law firm. I had gotten that corner office.
- 10:35I was 48 years old, and I was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer.
- 10:46And the doctors gave me a grim prognosis, possibly five years to live.
- 10:54Now, because my mother had died of cancer at age 49, it felt like family history
- 11:01was about to repeat itself. the cancer diagnosis was a brutal, brutal wake-up call.
- 11:08And it forced me to confront not only my own mortality, but the harsh reality
- 11:15that I had avoided for years.
- 11:19In faithfully serving everyone else, I had neglected my own self-care,
- 11:26leaving me vulnerable to disease.
- 11:29And that season of suffering forced me to slow down and to turn to God in a
- 11:36deeper and more intimate way than I ever had before.
- 11:41I could not accept that there was no hope for me.
- 11:46I knew God was my hope. His word says so.
- 11:50I believed that he could do what medicine could not do.
- 11:56But I also realized that my health was not separate from my faith.
- 12:03You know, sometimes we put church over here and our health over here,
- 12:10going to the gym and our diet and all of that. But,
- 12:14they are deeply intertwined. I learned how to trust God in a profoundly personal way.
- 12:23I stood on his promises in the healing scriptures. By his stripes, I am healed.
- 12:29I will live and not die and declare the works of the Lord.
- 12:34During the painful chemotherapy treatments, I meditated on his word.
- 12:40The price for my healing had been paid for by the 39 stripes that Christ endured
- 12:49for me before his crucifixion.
- 12:54I stayed in constant prayer, constant conversation with my Creator.
- 13:00I did not want my son to live his life without a mother the way that I had.
- 13:07I had to surrender my cancer journey to God.
- 13:12My faith deepened in that season, and I saw God's faithfulness in new and different ways.
- 13:18And against all medical odds, Angel, I am here today, by God's grace,
- 13:26alive and 20 years cancer-free.
- 13:30But my journey didn't end with remission.
- 13:34I expected my life to return to normal, but it did not.
- 13:39What followed were years of chronic illness and complications and ongoing health
- 13:45challenges, my body had been ravaged by the cancer surgery,
- 13:51the side effects of the intensive treatments, and healing just unfolded slowly, unpredictably.
- 13:59I had survived cancer, but I knew that I still was not well.
- 14:06But instead of slowing down, I continued to push forward, I tried to return
- 14:13to my family obligations, my countless church activities, my high-stress career.
- 14:21And the more I pushed, the more my body said no, and the more the striving impeded my recovery.
- 14:32My body was signaling that something deeper needed to change, but I refused to listen.
- 14:38And then the ground crumbled beneath my feet.
- 14:45In 2012, I lost my youngest sister suddenly. We were so close.
- 14:52And then just a month later, her husband took his own life.
- 14:58He could not see a future without her.
- 15:02And that level of grief and guilt, you know, what did I miss? What didn't I see?
- 15:10It just shattered my soul. I didn't understand at that time how deeply that
- 15:17emotional trauma would impact my physical health.
- 15:23I internalized the grief.
- 15:27I suppressed it, the guilt, the pain.
- 15:31And over time, my body began to reflect what my soul had not processed and released.
- 15:42So inflammation around my heart forced me into long-term disability,
- 15:50and I had to give up my law career.
- 15:53A long season of chronic illness followed, and that's when I began to understand this.
- 15:59Your body carries what your soul does not release.
- 16:07And just when I thought I had turned the corner.
- 16:10I was reaching stability in my health.
- 16:14In 2019, the pandemic hit, and that triggered uncontrollable emotional eating.
- 16:24In the isolation, in the fear, in the depression, I gained 60 pounds in just
- 16:32a few months, using food to fill unmet emotional needs.
- 16:40My thoughts were consumed by negative self-talk.
- 16:45Negative body image, self-condemnation, shame.
- 16:51My spirit was crushed, empty.
- 16:56I spiraled out of control physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually.
- 17:01And in that dark pit of hopelessness, because I truly was hopeless,
- 17:08God met me again and began to shift something in me.
- 17:13And it became clear to me that the condition of my body was reflecting the condition of my spirit.
- 17:22And what was draining my spirit was draining my body.
- 17:28So by 2020, my questions started to change.
- 17:32I had trusted God with my cancer journey. I mean, that's a big God thing, right, Cancer?
- 17:42But was I trusting him completely with my entire journey, whether it was weight gain or grief or fear?
- 17:53You know, it was about surrender.
- 17:57All my life, I was striving in
- 17:59my own strength to be the perfect wife and mother and church member and attorney
- 18:05and always looking in my own understanding for the right pill or treatment to
- 18:14erase the pain of grief and sorrow.
- 18:18And I was constantly searching for that perfect diet and exercise program to
- 18:24fix myself instead of fully surrendering all of me to him,
- 18:33all of my broken body, all of my wounded mind, will, emotions,
- 18:40all of my weary spirit.
- 18:43And I began to learn how to surrender differently.
- 18:49I began to anchor my faith, my
- 18:52health, my life in him, and to embrace my identity as his beloved child.
- 19:00I began to truly believe, believe that Christ died so that I could live,
- 19:08not just survive, but live and have life in abundance and to the full and overflowing.
- 19:18And God lovingly, after I retired, redirected my path into Christian health
- 19:25coaching. And I founded Rebuild Your Temple God's Way in 2023.
- 19:31But my true turning point angel was in 2025.
- 19:36My heart stopped suddenly.
- 19:40By God's grace, I was in my doctor's office at the time.
- 19:47Had I been anywhere else, I would not be here with you today.
- 19:52I survived 50 minutes, five zero minutes of CPR.
- 20:01The doctor's entire staff worked on me continuously for 50 minutes.
- 20:12And then I had extensive thoracic surgery to repair. They did such a wonderful job.
- 20:19Repair broken ribs and punctured and collapsed lungs and all kinds of complications.
- 20:27That moment, though, was not just another, another medical crisis.
- 20:34It was another divine redirection. That moment stripped away my physical health again.
- 20:42My emotional health and mindset were turbulent again.
- 20:47My spiritual health was fragile again.
- 20:51My life was fully, completely in God's hands. and in that stillness.
- 20:59I recognized that I had veered off course.
- 21:03I had reverted to old patterns of striving and a stressful lifestyle.
- 21:10In my passion to help others achieve
- 21:15health and wholeness, I had started neglecting my own health again.
- 21:21And again, my merciful God lovingly stepped in. And that moment moved me from
- 21:31a life of striving to a life of surrender.
- 21:35I had no choice but to trust God with every part of my life.
- 21:44And with all of me, body, soul, and spirit, I had to stop completely, surrender fully.
- 21:56And in the process, he showed me new ways to serve him.
- 22:02And I am now celebrating one year cardiac arrest survivorship.
- 22:10My husband said he didn't know when it happened whether he was planning for
- 22:16a funeral or planning for me to come home.
- 22:21So, when I was first diagnosed with cancer, I believed my healing would be immediate.
- 22:27All the beautiful stories of Christ healing in the Bible.
- 22:33I prayed fervently. I meditated on the promises in God's Word.
- 22:37I believed God would restore me quickly, but that's not what happened.
- 22:43Healing unfolded slowly, over years and not moments.
- 22:48Then came chronic illness. later cardiac arrest, and in each season of suffering,
- 22:56I was forced to confront something very real that we don't like to admit.
- 23:03I could not control the outcome.
- 23:07Only God could.
- 23:09Trusting God is not trusting Him to do what I expect, what I pray for,
- 23:17what I plan for in my timing.
- 23:21It's trusting that He is in control.
- 23:26It's trusting His love for me.
- 23:30It's trusting His divine plan and purpose for my life and that it's good.
- 23:35It's trusting His will.
- 23:38His way, his timing. It's trusting his character.
- 23:44When life unfolds differently than I would choose, that he is still good,
- 23:51that he is still faithful,
- 23:54that he is still sovereign, even when healing is prolonged.
- 24:01God is still present in the process, not just in the miracle.
- 24:06So my faith matured in the uncertainty of my journey, not because everything
- 24:14made sense, but because I came to know Him more deeply in the middle of it.
- 24:20And for me, faith was the foundation of the transformation process.
- 24:26Faith shifted me from striving to surrender, from control to trust, from pressure to peace.
- 24:37And that's when my true healing began in body, soul, and spirit.
- 24:45Wow. I mean, you know,
- 24:49you prepare for a podcast,
- 24:52right and you prepare to hear a story and then you hear the story and like all
- 24:59of you that are listening this morning i'm listening with you and there are so many journeys in life,
- 25:08we never sign up for nobody wakes up and says god give me the hard road give
- 25:15me the diagnosis gave me the struggle that changes everything.
- 25:19And yet, here we are, walking through things we didn't choose.
- 25:25Carrying weight we didn't ask for, trying to make sense of a story that feels
- 25:30like it shifted overnight.
- 25:32And if we're being honest with each other, this is where faith gets tested.
- 25:38Because it's easy to trust God when everything is going well.
- 25:44It's easy to say God is good when life feels good.
- 25:50But what about when your body starts changing?
- 25:53When the doctor's report comes back different? When your strength isn't what it used to be?
- 26:00When you do what you do or what do you do actually when life,
- 26:06as you know it, no longer looks the same, right?
- 26:10I've come to realize myself, just like you did, Stephanie, is that trusting
- 26:15God in those moments is not automatic.
- 26:19It's not something that you just wake up and feel.
- 26:22It's something you choose. Sometimes every single day.
- 26:27Some days that trust looks strong. Others days looks like holding on by a thread.
- 26:35But here's the reality. We just heard an amazing story.
- 26:39And throughout it all, Stephanie kept coming back.
- 26:43She kept coming back to God. and she realized that God is not absent in the
- 26:50journey that you didn't choose.
- 26:53He doesn't step away when things got hard.
- 26:57He didn't step away when things got harder. He didn't say, come back when you're stronger.
- 27:03No, he met you right there in the uncertainty, in the fear, in the questions
- 27:11you didn't have the answers to.
- 27:14And sometimes trusting God doesn't mean understanding the journey.
- 27:19It means not letting go of him in it.
- 27:23It means saying, God, I don't get this, but I'm still here. I don't understand
- 27:29this, but I'm still holding on.
- 27:31And maybe that's what real faith looks like. It's not perfect.
- 27:36It's not polished, but present.
- 27:39So still showing up, still believing, even if it's quiet.
- 27:44Because even when Stephanie was in the journey that you didn't choose,
- 27:49you realized that God is still walking with you.
- 27:53And that was enough for you then.
- 27:56That was enough for you today and now
- 28:00hearing your story and allowing our listeners to be introduced by you stephanie
- 28:07sharing your journey about your passion to helping heal others through your
- 28:13story and a prayer and faith makes me realize that there is hope in the world,
- 28:21So I want to close out with you by saying, please, let's not make this a one and done situation.
- 28:30Please come back on this show so that you can share more in depth about your
- 28:36journey so that we can help others who are probably dealing with this right now and are saying, wow,
- 28:43how can I read more about her journey?
- 28:45How can I share with her and let her know what this has done for me?
- 28:51We're going to put links in her description, our description page.
- 28:55We're going to give her all the feedback.
- 28:58We're going to encourage our listeners to know that she's not gone forever. She'll be back.
- 29:06We're officially welcoming her back. But I want to say to you this,
- 29:10honestly, you know, we spoke very, very quickly offline and we met for the first
- 29:14time face to face for maybe five minutes. Okay.
- 29:19But Stephanie, thank you. Thank you for sharing your journey.
- 29:23Thank you for sharing this journey with us today. Because your story is not
- 29:27only the one strength and perseverance, but it's one for purpose.
- 29:33It's one that will describe to others through your faith, your honesty,
- 29:39your willingness to speak about your health journey,
- 29:42and the fact that you're going to be helping others and have been and will continue
- 29:46on helping others find healing in their own lives.
- 29:50What stands out most is how you've allowed God to use your story,
- 29:55not just for yourself, but for others who have maybe struggling.
- 30:00Searching, or trying to hold on.
- 30:03It's your passion to uplift.
- 30:06It's your passion to encourage.
- 30:08It's your passion to remind people that faith still matters,
- 30:14even in the hardest days of our lives.
- 30:17And that is truly powerful through prayer, through faith, through your testimony.
- 30:24Stephanie, you're making a difference. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
- 30:29So let us come together and pray and close out today in prayer. Heavenly Father.
- 30:38We know that you do not do things by accident. You bring people together at
- 30:44the right place, at the right time, for a purpose.
- 30:49We are given gifts, we are given treasures, and we are given a talent.
- 30:54We're so grateful that our talents and her gratefulness of her joy and her love
- 31:00for you was able to be heard today.
- 31:02We continue to lift up in prayer her family. We pray and know that her sister
- 31:09is watching down and saying, that's my sister.
- 31:12And she can do all things by the grace of God.
- 31:16We remember all of your family members out there, half faith family,
- 31:20that remember that we are not alone.
- 31:25So walk today, walk with God because he loves you.
- 31:29He believes in you and he is never going to leave your side. May God be with you.
- 31:35May he shine his light upon you and grant each and every single one of you peace
- 31:40on earth and never forget, have faith, let it begin. Thank you for being here.
