0:51
Speaker 1: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, This is Carl Lee with Let's
0:54
Speaker 1: Talk with Carlee. And today I have one of my
0:59
Speaker 1: co host in the building, Lisa Odie.
1:02
Speaker 2: Hello, and we have a.
1:06
Speaker 1: We have a guest, and I'm hoping that he's probably
1:09
Speaker 1: gonna be able to hear this part of it.
1:13
Speaker 2: That I have to give him his due.
1:17
Speaker 1: One he's going into the Hall of Fame, and then
1:21
Speaker 1: the other side of it, was he in my view,
1:23
Speaker 1: he was really, really, really one of the best receivers
1:27
Speaker 1: that I've ever gone against. But I just, I just
1:34
Speaker 1: I can't give him his due. That I hate to
1:36
Speaker 1: have to give him his due. But trust me, during
1:39
Speaker 1: this conversation, he will probably make sure he gets it.
1:42
Speaker 2: So I'd like to introduce Sterling Sharp.
1:46
Speaker 4: Yeah, hello, Sterling.
1:50
Speaker 5: Hi. Yeah, we're gonna have to work on your intro. Okay,
1:57
Speaker 5: there was a lot more you were supposed to.
2:03
Speaker 2: Okay, hold on for a second.
2:06
Speaker 4: A much better intro.
2:09
Speaker 2: Because I couldn't give it to me.
2:11
Speaker 4: Yes, I surely can. I surely can't.
2:14
Speaker 5: I raised.
2:17
Speaker 4: Did you raise him ride? I'm not sure he.
2:20
Speaker 5: Knows what I did in junior high.
2:27
Speaker 4: To minimize Oh my goodness.
2:29
Speaker 1: Look, I had already prepared myself that this like, I
2:33
Speaker 1: can't actually give you a whole lot of credit and
2:37
Speaker 1: do so.
2:38
Speaker 2: I'm Lisa has them all. I want to make sure
2:40
Speaker 2: that the folks be nice.
2:42
Speaker 4: I would I would to make.
2:44
Speaker 1: Sure that she can give you your proper I can't
2:47
Speaker 1: give it to you. I wouldn't feel good give it
2:50
Speaker 1: to you. So just sit back and listen and let
2:53
Speaker 1: Lisa do her job right.
2:54
Speaker 6: So our esteemed guests, mister Sharp Sterling Sharp. He was
2:59
Speaker 6: drafted in the first round of the NFL in nineteen
3:01
Speaker 6: eighty eight, seventh overall correct seven years span in the NFL,
3:07
Speaker 6: you were one of the only two players to achieve
3:09
Speaker 6: at least five hundred receptions and seven thousand receiving yards
3:13
Speaker 6: in it six year span, and the other one was
3:16
Speaker 6: Jerry Rice. So you are in quite esteemed company. You had,
3:22
Speaker 6: mister Sharp five hundred and forty receptions for seven three
3:25
Speaker 6: hundred and forty three yards during that period. You also
3:30
Speaker 6: were invited to the Pro Bowl more than Carl five times.
3:33
Speaker 2: He was lucky.
3:34
Speaker 5: Uh huhh.
3:36
Speaker 6: And you also went there's a comparison that we could
3:39
Speaker 6: do with with Jerry Rice, one of your comrades that
3:42
Speaker 6: you played with in the NFL. He may have outpaced
3:45
Speaker 6: you with receiving yards, but you, mister Sharp, led him
3:48
Speaker 6: in receptions and touchdowns much better.
3:51
Speaker 5: Introductions, Lisa, why I appreciate what you did. You're talking
3:55
Speaker 5: way too fast.
3:59
Speaker 4: I need to slow it down.
4:00
Speaker 5: Huh blow down. I mean I was trying to take it,
4:05
Speaker 5: he said. I'm like, if I had seven thousand yards,
4:10
Speaker 5: well pull a thousand of them were against Minnesota, And yes,
4:15
Speaker 5: I don't want to call it. I ain't calling anybody
4:17
Speaker 5: names because I don't like putting people business in the street.
4:20
Speaker 1: You have to tell you see, bro, I'm gonna I'm
4:23
Speaker 1: gonna give you this. I'm going to give you this
4:25
Speaker 1: just because this is This is like you know, a
4:28
Speaker 1: show that you know, we bring people on, we want
4:31
Speaker 1: to try to.
4:32
Speaker 2: Give them their props.
4:34
Speaker 1: And you know, and I get this question all the time,
4:37
Speaker 1: who's the best receiver that you win against? And everybody
4:42
Speaker 1: the first first person that they say is like Jerry Rice,
4:46
Speaker 1: And I'm like, no, you know, he was a great receiver.
4:50
Speaker 1: We shut him down one year, he blow us up
4:53
Speaker 1: the next year.
4:54
Speaker 5: You know.
4:54
Speaker 2: So it was it was that kind of thing.
4:57
Speaker 1: But the one thing that I can honestly saying, and
5:01
Speaker 1: as much as I hate giving any du what bothered
5:07
Speaker 1: me about you and made me realize, like, how does
5:11
Speaker 1: this dude do this? We're in the huddle. He comes
5:16
Speaker 1: running through our huddle telling us, I don't even know
5:19
Speaker 1: why you guys are huddling up. You're just gonna play
5:21
Speaker 1: man the man and blitz everybody, right, And and I'm
5:25
Speaker 1: sitting there and I'm lined up over him, and he's like, bro,
5:28
Speaker 1: don't worry about it. It's a run. It's a run,
5:31
Speaker 1: and don't talk to me. I can't play that way.
5:36
Speaker 1: Like I can't play. I can't play like you know,
5:40
Speaker 1: I'm at an intense guy like I gotta be thinking
5:43
Speaker 1: step punch, step punch, make sure I get my.
5:46
Speaker 2: Hands on him.
5:48
Speaker 1: This guy is sitting there laughing and having the best
5:53
Speaker 1: time playing at the highest level. And to me, that
5:58
Speaker 1: bothered me and I and I, And now that I'm
6:01
Speaker 1: saying it on air and telling people, I think I
6:03
Speaker 1: even dislike it even more.
6:05
Speaker 4: Oh my goodness.
6:06
Speaker 5: I currently enjoyed it because Minnesota was one of the
6:11
Speaker 5: teams where I had a lot of guys that that
6:15
Speaker 5: would have And I call it having fun with me
6:18
Speaker 5: because it Lisa, I hope your audience knows this is
6:23
Speaker 5: the only thing I ever wanted to do. Like, I
6:26
Speaker 5: didn't have a contingency plan for not making it to
6:29
Speaker 5: the NFL. There was no I'm going to fall back
6:32
Speaker 5: and do this. So when I played, I enjoyed every
6:35
Speaker 5: single snap and I would walk in there huggle and
6:39
Speaker 5: be like, oh, well that last defense didn't work. That
6:44
Speaker 5: I would call it. But there were so many guys
6:48
Speaker 5: that were great players that knew what they were doing,
6:52
Speaker 5: that were comfortable in who they were, that would talk
6:55
Speaker 5: with me. Richard Dent in Chicago was one. Uh Uh.
7:00
Speaker 5: I love Scott Studwell, uh uh, the late Chris Dolman.
7:09
Speaker 5: Don't you know who was real? H al Noga was real.
7:15
Speaker 5: He was a real football player.
7:17
Speaker 2: Yes he was. And you know he gets no credit though.
7:20
Speaker 5: He was a real football player. And while he didn't
7:25
Speaker 5: have the name because he played on the defense with
7:28
Speaker 5: some out talent, standing talent with you know, Keith Millard
7:31
Speaker 5: and Henry Thomas and those guys, he was one that
7:35
Speaker 5: would quietly talk with me and what I loved about
7:40
Speaker 5: what I did. And I tell people I talked, but
7:43
Speaker 5: I never made it public and I never made it personal.
7:46
Speaker 5: It was always to get us through these four quarters.
7:50
Speaker 5: When we were done, a man, stay healthy, we'll see
7:53
Speaker 5: you on a monk, We'll see you in two months,
7:55
Speaker 5: or whatever the case may be. When we played against
7:57
Speaker 5: teams in our division, but I enjoyed talking with the
8:01
Speaker 5: people that I got a chance to line up against.
8:03
Speaker 2: Okay, so let me let me ask you this question.
8:06
Speaker 1: When did you know, like coming out of college, being
8:12
Speaker 1: drafted super early in the first round and all of
8:16
Speaker 1: that because to what you said, I was the same guy.
8:20
Speaker 2: I was the exact same guy. But I didn't have
8:22
Speaker 2: no fallback.
8:24
Speaker 1: My whole intentions were to play in the league, and
8:28
Speaker 1: if I didn't play in the league, hey, I'll have
8:30
Speaker 1: to figure that out. But I'm giving everything I got
8:32
Speaker 1: to playing in the league.
8:35
Speaker 2: When when was it? When did you figure out like
8:40
Speaker 2: that the league?
8:41
Speaker 1: You could play in this league and not only could
8:43
Speaker 1: you play, but you could be good, great, and now
8:48
Speaker 1: a Hall of Famer.
8:49
Speaker 2: When did you know that? How long did it take
8:52
Speaker 2: you to figure that out?
8:54
Speaker 5: I never figured that out. Never, you know, Carl and
8:59
Speaker 5: I one, I came in highly touted because I got drafted.
9:05
Speaker 5: I was seventh in the first round in a draft
9:08
Speaker 5: with six receivers. Tim Brown went in front of me,
9:11
Speaker 5: Michael Evern went behind me, so there were six of
9:15
Speaker 5: us in the first round. I never figured it out.
9:19
Speaker 5: My whole thing was, and I've said this a thousand
9:22
Speaker 5: times since being selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame,
9:26
Speaker 5: I never wanted anything else when I played football. It
9:31
Speaker 5: wasn't about the team's success, my success going to the
9:35
Speaker 5: Pro Bowl. Oh, Jerry's got fifty, Chris Carter's got fifty catches,
9:40
Speaker 5: I got forty nine. I gotta do. No. I was playing, man,
9:44
Speaker 5: I was a kid, and I was like, I'm enjoying
9:47
Speaker 5: every single snap of this. And it's so funny that
9:52
Speaker 5: you asked that question, because when my career ended, there
9:55
Speaker 5: was only one person half year that I wasn't playing
9:57
Speaker 5: football anymore, and that was the doctor. He was the
10:00
Speaker 5: only person ever was more happy than me that I
10:02
Speaker 5: wasn't playing anymore, because I was like, I did what
10:05
Speaker 5: I wanted to do. I didn't ask God to play
10:08
Speaker 5: for fifteen years. I didn't ask God to win five
10:10
Speaker 5: Super Bowls. I didn't move the gold posts and say
10:13
Speaker 5: I want to be a six time All Pro and
10:15
Speaker 5: a seven time Pro Bowl. No, I just want to play.
10:19
Speaker 5: And I got a chance to lead the league and
10:22
Speaker 5: catches my second year in the league. I got to
10:25
Speaker 5: go to the Pro Bowl with some outstanding talent, and
10:29
Speaker 5: you get a chance to watch and learn and adapt
10:32
Speaker 5: and adjust and to steal from those players. I never
10:36
Speaker 5: figured out what a good player was at my position.
10:40
Speaker 5: I knew Jerry Rice was the best I'd ever seen
10:42
Speaker 5: at my position, but I didn't know. I never figured
10:46
Speaker 5: out that I was one of them. Never dawned on me.
10:51
Speaker 1: Okay, so when you get to the Pro Bowl, now
10:55
Speaker 1: this is me, okay, and I'm trying to figure this
10:58
Speaker 1: out when you talk about that when you go to
11:01
Speaker 1: the Pro Bowl and you're looking at the guys that
11:03
Speaker 1: you're that's at your position, you know. So I'm looking
11:06
Speaker 1: at the corners and it's nothing but bump and run corners,
11:10
Speaker 1: and I'm trying to, you know, figure out, you know,
11:14
Speaker 1: what do they do, how do they do it? How
11:16
Speaker 1: does it compare to me? And and for me, like
11:19
Speaker 1: I was interested in trying to figure out am I
11:22
Speaker 1: better than that guy? Or or or what so are
11:25
Speaker 1: you saying to me? Or in that in that spill
11:28
Speaker 1: there that at the Pro Bowl. In games, it didn't
11:34
Speaker 1: bother you about the other receivers. You didn't you didn't
11:39
Speaker 1: judge them. You just did your thing.
11:41
Speaker 5: No, carl I learned when you're an old Georgia farm boy,
11:45
Speaker 5: when you're working on the farm. My grandfather used to
11:49
Speaker 5: ask me to say this being a being a military guy.
11:51
Speaker 5: Carl I said that I say this every day every morning.
11:54
Speaker 5: This is my life. There are many like it, but
11:58
Speaker 5: this one is mine. Now I can live my life
12:01
Speaker 5: your way. I can live my life at least this way.
12:07
Speaker 5: But am I living my life? And so when I played,
12:11
Speaker 5: and I'll let you in on some things in my
12:15
Speaker 5: growth as an NFL receiver, I had technicians, I had philosophers.
12:21
Speaker 5: I had John Gruten was the first guy to make
12:25
Speaker 5: me study the other receivers, which was really fine. My
12:29
Speaker 5: last two years in football. I had John Gruden as
12:31
Speaker 5: a position coach for two years. My last few years
12:33
Speaker 5: in football, every route I ran, I was someone else because, Okay,
12:39
Speaker 5: we're playing Tampa. They played Chris Carter last week, so
12:42
Speaker 5: you're going to be in the slought a lot look
12:44
Speaker 5: at Chris and how he runs this route in this route.
12:47
Speaker 5: So against Tampa when we played him, I was Chris Carter.
12:50
Speaker 5: When we played New England, I was Andre Reid work
12:55
Speaker 5: in the middle. When we played Detroit, I was Michael
13:01
Speaker 5: Irvin because Dallas had played them the week before. So
13:04
Speaker 5: I never really learned to study other players until John Gruden.
13:09
Speaker 5: And it's funny when I had Buddy, Buddy took me
13:13
Speaker 5: as high as I could. I went to two Pro
13:15
Speaker 5: Bowls under him, led the league on I got Sherm Lewis.
13:19
Speaker 5: I was fortunate enough with my teammates to win the
13:21
Speaker 5: Triple Crown. With Charm lead the league and catches. I
13:24
Speaker 5: led the league and catches for John Gruden. They all
13:27
Speaker 5: took my game to another level. And it was almost
13:31
Speaker 5: like when my game the football god said your game
13:34
Speaker 5: is not gonna get any better. Time for you to go,
13:36
Speaker 5: because all I wanted to do was play. So I
13:39
Speaker 5: never really got caught up in the numbers or the
13:42
Speaker 5: accolades or the actions. And let me tell you, I
13:44
Speaker 5: never understood how me and you can play on the
13:47
Speaker 5: same team. We could win the same games, we can
13:50
Speaker 5: lose the same games. But at the end of the year,
13:52
Speaker 5: you the MVP. Wait what and then if I tried
14:00
Speaker 5: to be the MVP. Now I'm selfish. I never I
14:05
Speaker 5: never liked recognition, and you've known me forever. I still don't.
14:11
Speaker 5: I never liked recognition because there are too many people
14:15
Speaker 5: that have to do their jobs. Selmi. I well, for
14:20
Speaker 5: you to have a successful play offensively, it used to
14:22
Speaker 5: be four yards was a successful play. You tried to
14:27
Speaker 5: get somewhere around eight yards for a successful play in
14:29
Speaker 5: the past game. So I never liked that. So I
14:32
Speaker 5: never interested myself in numbers. You know, I always was like, Hey,
14:36
Speaker 5: I'm playing. This is what I'm doing. That's why I
14:39
Speaker 5: never missed a game. There were times where I probably
14:42
Speaker 5: shouldn't have played, and I think if I would have
14:46
Speaker 5: stopped playing against Atlanta when I had the worst severe
14:49
Speaker 5: ankle injury that of my career, I probably would have
14:54
Speaker 5: played another five more years. But I didn't pay attention
14:57
Speaker 5: to what I was there for, and that was to play.
14:59
Speaker 5: So I love playing football, man, I really did. And
15:03
Speaker 5: when I got to Pro Bowls, you probably helped me
15:08
Speaker 5: more because I watched how you guys treated me. You
15:15
Speaker 5: had been in the league for what four or five
15:17
Speaker 5: six years, and the way you guys treated me was like,
15:22
Speaker 5: you know what, man, we had our two battles. You
15:26
Speaker 5: know what, we played against each other, the home and home.
15:30
Speaker 5: We're the best of the best in the NFC. We here,
15:35
Speaker 5: we're gonna enjoy each other. We're gonna enjoy ourselves. My
15:39
Speaker 5: first Pro Bow, John Robinson was our head coach. OOP said,
15:42
Speaker 5: I got a team time in twenty minutes, and I
15:51
Speaker 5: think our practices, our practice lasted seventeen minutes. And that's
15:55
Speaker 5: when the Pro Bowl was like the Super Bowl because
16:00
Speaker 5: five thousand to the loser and ten thousands of the winter,
16:03
Speaker 5: and back in those days, you know, pooring was hard
16:06
Speaker 5: to come by, so you got your head knocked off
16:09
Speaker 5: in the Pro Bowl and there was no apologies made.
16:12
Speaker 5: So I enjoyed just just I'll say this just to
16:18
Speaker 5: end that car. I think the biggest thing I learned
16:22
Speaker 5: was you have to learn to follow before you can leave.
16:25
Speaker 5: And watching you guys and how you did your business
16:30
Speaker 5: when it was you know, you might be talking to
16:32
Speaker 5: somebody behind the huddle, but in one on one when
16:34
Speaker 5: it was time to go or you were locked in.
16:37
Speaker 5: And when I watched Jerry run a route, Jerry had
16:41
Speaker 5: just won a Super Bowl, so they had played a
16:43
Speaker 5: couple of games one week play and he was like,
16:47
Speaker 5: oh man, I'm so tired and I'm gonna let you
16:49
Speaker 5: young guys have all these reps. And he did one
16:52
Speaker 5: on one and he was shot out of a cannon
16:54
Speaker 5: and I was like, Wow, what that showing me is
16:59
Speaker 5: is he's letting us know he's the best at what
17:03
Speaker 5: he does. Now, what does that fit in or does
17:07
Speaker 5: that affect me? No, it doesn't because I'm my own standard.
17:11
Speaker 5: And when I was my own as my own standard,
17:13
Speaker 5: I never failed. Now I could fail being Jerry Rice,
17:17
Speaker 5: and I could fail being Chris Carter, and I probably
17:21
Speaker 5: have failed being Andre Reid or Michael Irvin. I ain't
17:25
Speaker 5: ever failed athletically and being Sterling Sharp, I've always been
17:28
Speaker 5: a really good like that.
17:32
Speaker 7: And and.
17:34
Speaker 1: To that Pro Bowl situation and meeting you, My purpose
17:41
Speaker 1: in getting to know certain people was the guys like
17:48
Speaker 1: that I played against and guys that I felt like
17:51
Speaker 1: I enjoyed playing with, and they kind of also gave
17:56
Speaker 1: me some kind.
17:57
Speaker 2: Of a feel like we could be we could be cool.
18:00
Speaker 1: So getting to know you was was was like an
18:04
Speaker 1: easy thing.
18:06
Speaker 2: And and but we like hung out the whole time.
18:10
Speaker 2: But that was like that.
18:11
Speaker 1: But but for whatever good that you felt, it was,
18:15
Speaker 1: you know, you gotta look and and I'm bro I
18:17
Speaker 1: was a dude coming out of Marshall University. Nobody even
18:19
Speaker 1: I wasn't even supposed to even be on a team
18:22
Speaker 1: more or less be in a Pro Bowl.
18:24
Speaker 5: You know. I used to say that.
18:30
Speaker 1: You're not supposed to agree with beyond that, but but
18:35
Speaker 1: but I truly truly enjoyed one of that was probably
18:39
Speaker 1: the best thing the Pro Bowls, probably at least back
18:43
Speaker 1: in our day, was one of the best ways to
18:45
Speaker 1: get to know guys, and and I felt like in
18:49
Speaker 1: that situation we found ourselves and and and and buddied
18:53
Speaker 1: up and the rest of our career playing against each
18:56
Speaker 1: other was always.
18:57
Speaker 5: Fun that you know, when I said following lead. When
19:03
Speaker 5: I would watch you guys interacted with each other, it
19:06
Speaker 5: was never I did this to you, or I'm better
19:10
Speaker 5: at this than you, And I would always look and
19:13
Speaker 5: be like, you know what, the older guys just enjoy
19:17
Speaker 5: being around other guys. I came in the league at
19:21
Speaker 5: the time where I don't have to show you what
19:24
Speaker 5: I'm doing and how I'm doing, because I'm going to
19:26
Speaker 5: tell you what I'm doing and how I'm doing. When
19:29
Speaker 5: I watched you older guys interacting, the LT's and the
19:33
Speaker 5: Singletary's and the dent and you know, the Jerry Rice
19:38
Speaker 5: as John Taylor was on that one of my favorite
19:41
Speaker 5: receivers to watch. I was amazed at how much respect
19:49
Speaker 5: not was earned, but was given to everybody that was
19:54
Speaker 5: in that room. You know, when we were getting dressed
19:57
Speaker 5: for practice, I'm watching how this offensive lineman with a
20:01
Speaker 5: redskin helmet is talking to that offensive lineman with a
20:04
Speaker 5: bare helme, and I'm watching how this defensive back with
20:08
Speaker 5: a redskin helmet is talking to a dude who plays
20:10
Speaker 5: in Minnesota, and I was just like, I love that
20:16
Speaker 5: those guys respect each other's craft. And I don't know
20:20
Speaker 5: what each one of them did to get here, but
20:23
Speaker 5: the thing is is it was enough for them to
20:26
Speaker 5: get here. And I always and so I tried to
20:29
Speaker 5: be when I went back the next year, I tried
20:32
Speaker 5: to be that way with the younger guys, like, hey, man,
20:35
Speaker 5: enjoy this. Watch Guys. Just pay attention because you're going
20:40
Speaker 5: to see so much that you may think you know
20:43
Speaker 5: or want to be, and you're gonna find out that
20:47
Speaker 5: your best is actually good enough.
20:50
Speaker 2: Great.
20:50
Speaker 5: You know, you don't have to do anymore. You don't
20:52
Speaker 5: have to be anymore. You don't have to really let
20:55
Speaker 5: people know how good you are or talk about your
21:00
Speaker 5: game because those of us who played football, oh, we
21:05
Speaker 5: know football, we know players. And I've always that's all
21:10
Speaker 5: I cared about. I wanted a guy to see me.
21:12
Speaker 5: He's sitting with his son in church and he sees
21:15
Speaker 5: me and he be like a son. I played against
21:17
Speaker 5: that guy right there, and he was, Hell, that's all
21:20
Speaker 5: I've ever wanted to say.
21:21
Speaker 4: That's perfect.
21:22
Speaker 5: The rest of it I appreciate. I appreciate the Hall
21:28
Speaker 5: of Fame. I really appreciate being the first brothers in
21:31
Speaker 5: the pro football now. I really appreciate that. But I
21:34
Speaker 5: appreciated the guys that saw me play, played with me,
21:39
Speaker 5: and played against me. I appreciate the things that they
21:43
Speaker 5: have had and have to say about how I was
21:46
Speaker 5: as a player and how I played. Again.
21:49
Speaker 6: Hey, hey, Sterling, and I just have a quick question
21:51
Speaker 6: for you. And I'm sure Carl's really going to enjoy
21:53
Speaker 6: this question because we all know that he is a
21:56
Speaker 6: closet Packer fan.
21:57
Speaker 4: Go, I know, right.
22:00
Speaker 6: I mean, I wear my hat because I'm a huge
22:02
Speaker 6: Packer fan. I didn't know if you knew that, but
22:04
Speaker 6: I'm a huge, huge Packer fan. And so when I
22:06
Speaker 6: wear my shirt or my hat, I've been given a
22:08
Speaker 6: dress code now for podcasts.
22:10
Speaker 4: Just so you know.
22:11
Speaker 6: But anyway, So you were part of that the Packers
22:15
Speaker 6: so called rebirth in the nineties, and you played alongside
22:18
Speaker 6: Brett Farv. You were part of bringing back the traditions
22:21
Speaker 6: of winning at lambeau Field. Just to just tell us
22:24
Speaker 6: a little bit about how that felt, well, walk us
22:27
Speaker 6: through that time period for.
22:28
Speaker 5: You, Okay, for me, when I got there, we weren't
22:32
Speaker 5: really good, right, That's not my job. My job is
22:37
Speaker 5: not to look out and say we're not very good.
22:40
Speaker 5: My job is to when we call fifty bandon or
22:44
Speaker 5: extern z EQS, be where I'm supposed to be, when
22:48
Speaker 5: I'm supposed to be there. We got better when we
22:53
Speaker 5: got hope. Yes, when I first got there, I came
22:58
Speaker 5: in at the tail lind of the old Guard. Whereas
23:02
Speaker 5: if you made the team in September, you were on
23:05
Speaker 5: the team all year and guys would do everything they
23:09
Speaker 5: could to make the team, but you kind of didn't
23:14
Speaker 5: get that same energy and excitement once they made the team.
23:19
Speaker 5: When I got Mike Holmgren, two things happened. There was
23:24
Speaker 5: hope because he brought a system that allowed many of
23:31
Speaker 5: us to not have to change or adapt who we were.
23:37
Speaker 5: I don't need motivation to go out and rip calls,
23:40
Speaker 5: jerseys off, jersey off per text.
23:42
Speaker 2: I did that, Yes you did, Yes, you did that.
23:46
Speaker 5: I don't. I don't need motivation for that. There was
23:50
Speaker 5: a play call. I got to get somewhere. He's standing there. Okay,
23:55
Speaker 5: it's his versus mind. When Mike brought that system, I
24:03
Speaker 5: got to watch every route that Jerry Rice and John
24:05
Speaker 5: Taylor ran. But more importantly, I got to see what
24:10
Speaker 5: the other people got to do. Mike Holmgreen gave me
24:15
Speaker 5: menership of that system. Mike would ask me during the game, Hey,
24:19
Speaker 5: what are they doing out there? Coach? You know, they're
24:22
Speaker 5: doing a lot of the same things. We're getting straight
24:23
Speaker 5: up bump and run on first down, they're doing a
24:26
Speaker 5: lot of off I got the safety trying to run
24:29
Speaker 5: underneath a slant or an out on second down. So
24:33
Speaker 5: what do you like? And I'm standing there going like, wait, what?
24:38
Speaker 5: And what I've learned? What I learned from Mike Holmgreen,
24:42
Speaker 5: and I don't think I've ever said this publicly. I
24:45
Speaker 5: learned that in leadership you don't have to be out front.
24:50
Speaker 5: You can be in the back and be the leader.
24:52
Speaker 5: Because if you're in the back and you're the leader,
24:55
Speaker 5: you get to see what everybody else is doing. And Mike,
24:59
Speaker 5: Mike would give me ownership and would just as a coach,
25:03
Speaker 5: as a head coach, and he called the place. He
25:07
Speaker 5: would talk to me like we were standing in line
25:10
Speaker 5: at Starbucks, and we would be doing this during the game.
25:14
Speaker 5: I would always sit on the bench for the towel
25:16
Speaker 5: over my head and enjoy the crowd, because remember, all
25:19
Speaker 5: I want to do is play. So I would sit
25:22
Speaker 5: and be like, if I were a fan, what would
25:25
Speaker 5: that be like? Because I'm not a football fan, but
25:28
Speaker 5: if I were a fan, I would watch games and
25:30
Speaker 5: be like, Wow, that was okay? Would I stand to Oh,
25:33
Speaker 5: I'm gonna spill my beer? I see a guy drop
25:35
Speaker 5: a hot dog. I'm doing all this during the game,
25:39
Speaker 5: and Mike Homgern would come over or he would get
25:42
Speaker 5: on the headset and tell me to get on the phone,
25:44
Speaker 5: and then he would say, come and stand next to me,
25:46
Speaker 5: and I would go stand over and he would just
25:48
Speaker 5: talk to me, just like me and you were talking
25:51
Speaker 5: right now. So when I got Hope, I got a
25:54
Speaker 5: really good system. And then I got ownership. And I'm
25:58
Speaker 5: speaking for me, person know I got ownership of that system.
26:03
Speaker 5: And I know what Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen felt
26:09
Speaker 5: in the triangle offense in Chicago. I know what Steph
26:14
Speaker 5: Curry and kd felt in the triangle system in Golden State.
26:19
Speaker 5: I know what the late Kobe Bryant felt being in
26:23
Speaker 5: that system in LA I know what that feels like
26:27
Speaker 5: when you only have to focus on being yourself. That
26:32
Speaker 5: alleviates a whole lot of mental gymnastics that slow you
26:37
Speaker 5: down from being the best player you can be.
26:40
Speaker 1: And to that point, bruh, Like Pete Carroll was my coach,
26:45
Speaker 1: and when he came, you know, prior to him coming,
26:50
Speaker 1: like they didn't even know really what to do with me.
26:53
Speaker 1: But then Pete puts us in the bump and run,
26:55
Speaker 1: teaches us all the steps and punching and all that
26:57
Speaker 1: kind of stuff. And to your point of whether you
27:01
Speaker 1: make a mistake or you know, like you like, I learned,
27:05
Speaker 1: like what the step, the step, the punch, read the
27:09
Speaker 1: route based on how he's pressing against pressing back up
27:12
Speaker 1: against me, all of those kinds of little techniques. And
27:15
Speaker 1: I'm like thinking, well, wait a minute, I kind of
27:19
Speaker 1: like this, and I think I can I can learn this,
27:22
Speaker 1: and I could get good at this, and and I
27:25
Speaker 1: can remember getting beat you know, rarely, especially if we're
27:29
Speaker 1: playing the Packers, I would be I would I would
27:33
Speaker 1: go to the sideline and you know, and Pete would
27:35
Speaker 1: you know, look at you and say, you know.
27:38
Speaker 2: What happened, Oh okay, just just fix it.
27:43
Speaker 1: And and and in that process he's walking away and
27:47
Speaker 1: I'm like thinking, well, you know, I was expecting to
27:50
Speaker 1: get maybe yelled at, or I was looking to get
27:53
Speaker 1: somebody to start from the beginning and give me the whole.
27:57
Speaker 1: But but what that what that is is that's you
28:01
Speaker 1: being accountable.
28:02
Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, I gave it to you, and now you
28:06
Speaker 2: have to be the one to do it. And if
28:10
Speaker 2: you can't make it work.
28:11
Speaker 4: I can't do it.
28:12
Speaker 5: Yes, yes, And I think.
28:14
Speaker 1: That's and see, And I think that is something that
28:17
Speaker 1: I think coaches today they don't understand. I think they
28:21
Speaker 1: kind of buy into the idea that my coaching is
28:25
Speaker 1: going to be the thing that's going to get you
28:28
Speaker 1: any success and or make us win.
28:31
Speaker 2: No, Okay, that player has got to be accounting.
28:34
Speaker 5: Let's look at let's let's look at what Kansas City's doing.
28:38
Speaker 5: You know, Andy Reid was in Green Bay with me.
28:41
Speaker 2: Oh that's right.
28:42
Speaker 5: I don't know all of their new verbic, but I
28:44
Speaker 5: know most of it. The system, the system Philadelphia. I
28:50
Speaker 5: don't know all of Philly's calls, but I know most
28:54
Speaker 5: of it. The system allows you to not have to
29:00
Speaker 5: change who you What did Jalen Hurts do that that
29:03
Speaker 5: he did was so different that he did at Alabama
29:08
Speaker 5: or at Oklahoma nothing. He looks just like the same
29:11
Speaker 5: guy because the system allows him to play his way confidently.
29:20
Speaker 5: And so the thing about a mistake is it's only
29:22
Speaker 5: a mistake if you do it twice. It ain't a
29:25
Speaker 5: mistake if you do it one time. It's only a mistake.
29:28
Speaker 5: That's interesting, only a mistake if you do it twice. Now, Carl,
29:32
Speaker 5: if you play bump and run and you let me
29:34
Speaker 5: grab the outside of that jersey and yank it down,
29:39
Speaker 5: and you go over to the referee and be like, bruh,
29:42
Speaker 5: the play. My shirt wasn't like this when the play started, Lisa,
29:49
Speaker 5: let me explain.
29:50
Speaker 2: Let me explain this, Let me explain this play.
29:53
Speaker 4: And I know you were yeah, and.
29:59
Speaker 2: I should have This should have been the end of
30:01
Speaker 2: our relationship.
30:02
Speaker 5: Right. So so I'm.
30:08
Speaker 1: Pressed up against him, you know, and he shakes and like,
30:13
Speaker 1: and I reached my arm out to punch to get
30:15
Speaker 1: to his shoulder, and he grabs me and literally like
30:20
Speaker 1: pulls my jersey like almost over my helmet.
30:27
Speaker 4: No, and I'm guessing that was part of the system.
30:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's part of his system. He So he takes off,
30:36
Speaker 1: it's a great throw. He dies and catch it. I
30:38
Speaker 1: try to dive. I'm about four yards behind him, I'm
30:42
Speaker 1: lunging for it.
30:43
Speaker 2: He makes the catch.
30:45
Speaker 1: I get up and I'm looking at the official and
30:47
Speaker 1: I'm like, how did my jersey get like this? Because
30:50
Speaker 1: my whole shoulder pad is showing and he's and you're saying, yes, that's.
30:55
Speaker 4: Cheeting, Is that Lambeau? Or was this okay?
31:00
Speaker 2: I thought it was yeah, So then okay. It makes
31:02
Speaker 2: it even worse.
31:03
Speaker 1: It makes it even worse because you all, because you
31:07
Speaker 1: all had had the officials.
31:11
Speaker 5: You're on the same sideline, that's right. So I was
31:14
Speaker 5: just like, you know, bro, I'm sorry.
31:17
Speaker 2: There was no sorry. There was no sorry in that.
31:21
Speaker 5: I was thinking it. Bro read the mind. Bro read
31:24
Speaker 5: the mind. I was thinking it.
31:28
Speaker 1: Was that's probably the worst play and or for sure
31:35
Speaker 1: the one play I will never ever ever forget. And
31:39
Speaker 1: I don't even know if it's just because we're friends
31:43
Speaker 1: now or just because it was like, how does somebody
31:47
Speaker 1: do this to me?
31:50
Speaker 5: I will tell you that Eric Allen, who is also
31:54
Speaker 5: a twenty twenty five member of the Pro Football Hall
31:57
Speaker 5: of Fame, I did it to him too, and he
32:00
Speaker 5: said the exact same thing you said, mister. My jersey
32:06
Speaker 5: wasn't like this was to play star.
32:09
Speaker 1: But you don't feel you don't feel like no kind
32:11
Speaker 1: of like like you don't feel bad about this, like
32:14
Speaker 1: you know, we we well past our game.
32:17
Speaker 2: You could say you're sorry?
32:19
Speaker 4: Who won the game?
32:20
Speaker 5: You know what I'm gonna do? You know where You're
32:21
Speaker 5: gonna get off the phone a little prayer chare, I'm
32:25
Speaker 5: gonna pray about it. Okay, I'm gonna feel good.
32:28
Speaker 4: You know what he's doing? The Lord, you might be right.
32:32
Speaker 5: I'm gonna go with my little prayer chair and I'm
32:34
Speaker 5: gonna sit down and have a talk. And like I said,
32:38
Speaker 5: only I'm gonna say.
32:40
Speaker 4: But who won the game? Stirling? Who won the game?
32:43
Speaker 5: They won the game? Wait a minute, I believe they
32:47
Speaker 5: won the game. Okay, really I think they won a game.
32:50
Speaker 4: You think Carl would remember that?
32:52
Speaker 5: No?
32:52
Speaker 2: I remember the play?
32:53
Speaker 4: Okay?
32:54
Speaker 1: Oh no, I don't get you know what. And to
32:58
Speaker 1: to that, to that question of like who won do
33:01
Speaker 1: you remember like a lot of games that you won
33:04
Speaker 1: or lost?
33:05
Speaker 5: I don't even like, like I never concerned myself with winning.
33:13
Speaker 5: That wasn't my job. I mean I didn't. I didn't
33:16
Speaker 5: bring in this defensive line from Kansas City I didn't
33:19
Speaker 5: bring you in, this linebacker from Pittsburgh. So I don't
33:23
Speaker 5: know how you or what they how they are going
33:27
Speaker 5: to figure into helping us be better than we were
33:31
Speaker 5: a week ago, a month ago, or a year ago.
33:35
Speaker 5: I never concerned myself with winning and losing. I couldn't.
33:38
Speaker 5: I was so giddy that I had fooled them. And
33:43
Speaker 5: then for another week that I get to play, and
33:47
Speaker 5: people think that I'm I'm making this up, and I'm like, no,
33:50
Speaker 5: y'all don't understand. You see when and that's all I
33:54
Speaker 5: ever wanted to do was play. Now, I don't know
33:58
Speaker 5: how I'm gonna ave this, but I know I'm on
34:02
Speaker 5: the right path because I'm playing high school football. I
34:06
Speaker 5: know I'm on the right path because I'm playing college football. Okay,
34:10
Speaker 5: now I'm in the NFL. I don't have to stay here.
34:14
Speaker 5: I don't have to stay here ten years. I don't
34:16
Speaker 5: have to stay here for twenty years. I guess what.
34:19
Speaker 5: I just want to play. So if it's if it's
34:21
Speaker 5: to play for two years, you may say, well your
34:27
Speaker 5: career was cut short. Well based on who Once again,
34:33
Speaker 5: this is my life. There are many like it, but
34:36
Speaker 5: this one is mine and I think where we fall
34:40
Speaker 5: short as sports fans is we are so quick to
34:44
Speaker 5: pin my expectations on you. True, and so I don't know.
34:51
Speaker 5: I used to hear stories about how Jerry trained, and
34:55
Speaker 5: I would be like that, that's great, But there are days.
35:00
Speaker 5: There are days in this South Carolina heat and Carl,
35:03
Speaker 5: you and I used to do my football camp for
35:05
Speaker 5: the seventy ten years I did it, and we would
35:07
Speaker 5: work out during lunch and in this South Carolina heat
35:11
Speaker 5: where it's one hundred and five and one hundred and
35:13
Speaker 5: fifteen the humidity, and Carl's like, yeah, we're gonna run
35:16
Speaker 5: eight two hundred. We're gonna run eight hundreds, and we're
35:19
Speaker 5: gonna run six fishes. And I was like, bro, I
35:23
Speaker 5: thought the Santa Monica Tract Club was in California what
35:26
Speaker 5: we do. But I'm like, oh, so this is how
35:32
Speaker 5: they are training. This is how he's training. Well, if
35:35
Speaker 5: he's training this way, he ain't training to tackle, he
35:39
Speaker 5: ain't training to score touchdown. He training so he can
35:44
Speaker 5: do battle with you. I'm learning something. And so now
35:48
Speaker 5: I got to watch him and Leroy Butler talk about
35:50
Speaker 5: how they split and how they're trying to use the
35:53
Speaker 5: outside hand and bump how they're trying to force you.
35:57
Speaker 5: So when you start to pick up on, you want
36:00
Speaker 5: stuff and you have the ability. And when I say ability,
36:04
Speaker 5: I'm not talking about the skills set. I'm saying just
36:08
Speaker 5: the ability of going. Oh so that's what you don't
36:10
Speaker 5: want me to do. Well, my job is to figure
36:13
Speaker 5: out how to get there. You don't want me inside,
36:17
Speaker 5: then I got to get there. So it's no longer.
36:19
Speaker 5: It's a lot less physical and it's more mental. And
36:23
Speaker 5: I learned so much from football camps talking listening to
36:28
Speaker 5: these were talking about football pro bols getting an opportunity.
36:33
Speaker 5: I got a chance to. I think my first autograph
36:36
Speaker 5: session was in Minnesota because Carl was like, hey man,
36:39
Speaker 5: you know we have an autograph session up here and
36:41
Speaker 5: a guy on a Green Bay packer, can you make it?
36:45
Speaker 5: What do you do at autograph session? You sign autographs? Oh?
36:51
Speaker 5: Because I never did it, because I never did that,
36:53
Speaker 5: and in person in Green Bay. I never signed autographs
36:56
Speaker 5: in person. I never said no because no eliminates options.
37:02
Speaker 5: I never said no. I always said not right now,
37:06
Speaker 5: not right now, wow, because no, don't, won't and can't
37:10
Speaker 5: eliminates options. I never said those words. So I learned
37:16
Speaker 5: more so how to lead by following. And what I
37:23
Speaker 5: realized is is by following, I was actually leading. And
37:29
Speaker 5: it's kind of a weird dynamic. And my brother has
37:32
Speaker 5: brought this to my attention on several occasions because I
37:37
Speaker 5: never really taught my brother anything. I never really showed
37:40
Speaker 5: my brother anything. I never really told him, I think
37:43
Speaker 5: only two times what he was going to do in
37:45
Speaker 5: our life. But he was watching, and I never paid
37:51
Speaker 5: attention to that. So I was so thankful that I
37:56
Speaker 5: was watching. Based on being a but I would consider
38:00
Speaker 5: a good follower and learning to follow my grandfather, my grandmother,
38:06
Speaker 5: my mom did a tremendous job. My mom didn't get
38:08
Speaker 5: anywhere near the credit by letting us leave Chicago and
38:12
Speaker 5: go live in Georgia with our grandparents. People don't understand
38:15
Speaker 5: what that dynamic is like when you get a chance
38:18
Speaker 5: to get out of the hustle and bustle and get
38:21
Speaker 5: somewhere slow. Where you got, you didn't have chores, It
38:24
Speaker 5: was who you were. You know, you had ownership. And
38:27
Speaker 5: I say that all the time. I'm so glad that
38:30
Speaker 5: I had ownership. I didn't own any hogs, or any tobacco,
38:33
Speaker 5: or any corn or any soybeans. But I had ownership
38:36
Speaker 5: of every one of those fields that we worked in.
38:39
Speaker 5: And when you have and carl and I used to
38:43
Speaker 5: have Bible talks all the time. When I would be
38:45
Speaker 5: in Charleston. We would go to service and come back
38:48
Speaker 5: and tear the service apart or the lesson or the
38:51
Speaker 5: message apart. There's a difference between possession and ownership. Yeah,
38:58
Speaker 5: possession tells you it's yours, but you got to go
39:00
Speaker 5: take ownership of it. God said it is yours, but
39:02
Speaker 5: I was laying as yours. All that's yours, But you
39:05
Speaker 5: got to take possession of it. And I was able
39:09
Speaker 5: to own my dream. An older gentleman, I will say
39:13
Speaker 5: this being in the South. I'm not racist, but I
39:16
Speaker 5: got to say it this way because an older gentleman,
39:18
Speaker 5: older white gentleman said it. He said hey, and he
39:22
Speaker 5: added the word boy. He said, hey, you you you
39:25
Speaker 5: you you you over there at Carolina And I said yes, sir.
39:28
Speaker 5: And he said, oh, so you you fulfilling your dream?
39:31
Speaker 5: I said yep. He said you know where to dream is,
39:34
Speaker 5: don't you. I said, well, you know, I kind of.
39:37
Speaker 5: He said, a dream is a gift that you give
39:40
Speaker 5: to yourself and I was able to fulfill mine by
39:45
Speaker 5: just playing the game of football high school. I played
39:49
Speaker 5: one year JV. Four years of high school. I was
39:52
Speaker 5: in college for five, that was in the NFL for seven,
39:55
Speaker 5: and I got to fulfilled and live my dream. And
40:00
Speaker 5: I might not have done it the way others would have,
40:04
Speaker 5: but I did it my way. And when you're your
40:06
Speaker 5: own standard, you've never failed.
40:08
Speaker 6: So, Sterling, you've taught me a new phrase. Not right now,
40:12
Speaker 6: So that's going to be like that. I'm going to
40:14
Speaker 6: live by that. I mean, that's perfect, not right now.
40:16
Speaker 6: It doesn't eliminate the options. That's perfect. Well, I just
40:19
Speaker 6: want to do a little, you know, play pretend here
40:23
Speaker 6: and just ask you. I mean, you know there's been
40:26
Speaker 6: changes to the game that coaches and owners you know
40:30
Speaker 6: of the NFL have have played a part in ot rules, kickoffs, replay,
40:35
Speaker 6: assist all those things that they've played a part in
40:37
Speaker 6: making change. Let's just pretend if you were an owner
40:41
Speaker 6: or a coach, what would be some of the changes
40:44
Speaker 6: you would make to the game.
40:46
Speaker 5: I would really love to answer that. I'm not sure
40:50
Speaker 5: that I can, Okay. The reason being is I have
40:56
Speaker 5: great memories of the way the game was played when
40:59
Speaker 5: I'm I would relish those rules. I understand the safety
41:09
Speaker 5: of the game. Let me tell you, the players today
41:13
Speaker 5: are bigger, they're stronger, and they're faster. The players today
41:18
Speaker 5: have more access to a system that fits who they
41:23
Speaker 5: are and what they do than we did. The players
41:28
Speaker 5: today are better conditioned, They're put in better situations. They're
41:33
Speaker 5: better prepared than we ever were. I don't want to
41:38
Speaker 5: change their game because it's their game right now. I
41:41
Speaker 5: relish the way the rules in what I played, and
41:46
Speaker 5: I came into the game at I got the last
41:50
Speaker 5: three years of straight up I don't need to go
41:53
Speaker 5: to the huddle, bump and run. It's me versus you
41:56
Speaker 5: for four quarters and you are constantly filing away information.
42:02
Speaker 5: With the advent of the new spread offense, where we
42:06
Speaker 5: got run passed options on everything, I think the players
42:10
Speaker 5: now have to be more, have to be smarter than
42:13
Speaker 5: they do athletics. In my day, you had to be
42:17
Speaker 5: athletics and you had to be mentally and I'm not
42:20
Speaker 5: challenging anyone's mental capacity. You had to be mentally strong.
42:26
Speaker 5: Because I'm straight up, bump and run on every single
42:30
Speaker 5: play and we ain't calling nothing. Okay, we ain't calling anything.
42:35
Speaker 5: I don't want to change the rules of today because
42:38
Speaker 5: I don't play today. The memories I have of football
42:42
Speaker 5: are when I played the rules that I played under.
42:47
Speaker 5: I didn't complain, and I would tell the officials, look,
42:51
Speaker 5: don't call anything on him, because I'm gonna do so
42:54
Speaker 5: much stuff to him as gonna have a guy. Don't
42:55
Speaker 5: call the thing. I would really be not the one
43:01
Speaker 5: to ask that question because I remember my playing days
43:06
Speaker 5: and I wouldn't change the ruling. Or I played in
43:10
Speaker 5: an era where defenses could impose their will on you.
43:14
Speaker 5: I played in defenses work. I played against defenses where
43:18
Speaker 5: they made you make decisions. You knew when the play
43:24
Speaker 5: was called if you were going to make the right
43:26
Speaker 5: decision or not. They were able to impose their physical
43:32
Speaker 5: strength on you. Can't do that now, and so it's
43:35
Speaker 5: a little different now. I don't dislike what little football
43:40
Speaker 5: I see, but I'm not gonna cheapen their game by
43:44
Speaker 5: saying my game was better. I just loved the era
43:47
Speaker 5: in which I played, and that's the memories I have.
43:50
Speaker 2: I'm going to take the case, make the case that
43:52
Speaker 2: it was it was better.
43:55
Speaker 5: Back then. Yes, yes, okay.
43:59
Speaker 1: Just because of the but and unfortunately. I hate to
44:02
Speaker 1: say it this way, but the physicality of it and
44:05
Speaker 1: the way players played, they went out knowing that that
44:08
Speaker 1: was how the game was gonna be. You you came
44:12
Speaker 1: into the game and, like you say, like you know
44:15
Speaker 1: that there's gonna be bumping run the whole game. I
44:18
Speaker 1: know I got to chase you all day. You know,
44:20
Speaker 1: I know I'm gonna win. I know I'm gonna lose.
44:22
Speaker 1: I know there's gonna be a tie, there's gonna you know,
44:24
Speaker 1: and you you accept that as what the game is today.
44:30
Speaker 1: I think they're better athletes. I think everything that you said,
44:32
Speaker 1: I think is exactly right. I just don't know if
44:35
Speaker 1: they can appreciate what what the game was.
44:38
Speaker 2: I think it's your the further back you go.
44:40
Speaker 5: But but but that's the thing. They don't have to.
44:43
Speaker 2: They don't have to.
44:43
Speaker 5: They don't. You're right because when I when I came
44:46
Speaker 5: in the league, I can't imagine Jim Marshall clothes line
44:49
Speaker 5: to me just because I'm standing that I'm right, right, right,
44:59
Speaker 5: And so I I think we as older players have
45:03
Speaker 5: to be careful because they have made or attempted to
45:09
Speaker 5: make our game safer. Yes, not for the players playing
45:15
Speaker 5: right now. But for when they retire and they get
45:18
Speaker 5: to be my age at sixty, you know, what are
45:22
Speaker 5: they going through? I loved at two hundred and twenty
45:25
Speaker 5: four pounds. I was like, you're gonna stand there for
45:28
Speaker 5: four quarters? Oh this getting ready to be real good.
45:31
Speaker 5: Wait a minute, I want to see what you look
45:35
Speaker 5: like after standing there for four quarters. And so now
45:40
Speaker 5: you know, remember the corners were long, they were big,
45:44
Speaker 5: they were physical. The safeties were even bigger. So when
45:49
Speaker 5: you had the force block and you went in and
45:52
Speaker 5: Joey Browner saw you coming, You're like, well, guess what
45:56
Speaker 5: the decision is? Broh. The fine print say I got
46:00
Speaker 5: to come in there. So that's what the fine president.
46:04
Speaker 5: You know what, man, that was a physical game. Who
46:07
Speaker 5: you got next week? We got Denver, We got Steve
46:10
Speaker 5: at Warris, Dennis Fithh never got back. Hey, hey, thank
46:16
Speaker 5: god we get to go home next week. Who you
46:18
Speaker 5: got David Foulcher? Oh my god? You got rock at
46:22
Speaker 5: two sixty? You know. But the thing is is, that's
46:26
Speaker 5: the is I appreciate. That's what I had to do
46:31
Speaker 5: to play in that game. That's what my level of
46:34
Speaker 5: I came into the league going no contact. I actually
46:38
Speaker 5: like contact. You can't I can't quit on contact being
46:42
Speaker 5: an old Georgia farm board work. This ain't worked. Work
46:46
Speaker 5: is when you don't have a shirt on. Work is
46:49
Speaker 5: when you're standing out there and all you see is
46:51
Speaker 5: hate and or tobacco. Work. Work is when you doing
46:57
Speaker 5: it for the family. When you work for the family,
47:01
Speaker 5: guess what you don't get You don't get paid work.
47:05
Speaker 5: This here is not work. So I can stand a
47:08
Speaker 5: Mike singletary. This is a slant. I'm coming in there
47:13
Speaker 5: and guess what. You can't hit me. You don't have
47:16
Speaker 5: to tackle me because if you hit me, there's gonna
47:19
Speaker 5: be a gain of thirty because if you don't make
47:22
Speaker 5: the tackle, Ronnie Lott certainly ain't making it. Okay. So
47:28
Speaker 5: that was the mentality that I had, which I love because,
47:33
Speaker 5: like I said, respect is given. The Bible teaches us that.
47:37
Speaker 5: I learned to respect everybody that was at that level
47:41
Speaker 5: because even though it wasn't my journey, everybody went on
47:44
Speaker 5: a journey to get there, and I appreciate everybody's journey.
47:47
Speaker 5: I really did.
47:49
Speaker 2: Sterling. This is producer Matt.
47:51
Speaker 7: My family's all from up in Wisconsin, so we're all packers.
47:54
Speaker 2: Fans, I didn't.
47:55
Speaker 5: Really know you are.
47:57
Speaker 2: You were in the minority here.
47:59
Speaker 4: I love it much.
48:01
Speaker 7: So you were talking a little bit ago about when
48:04
Speaker 7: coach Mike Holmbrin came in and how that kind of
48:06
Speaker 7: changed and a new system was put in place. I'm
48:10
Speaker 7: curious that for a couple of years there, you also
48:13
Speaker 7: got to play with Brett Farv when he took over
48:15
Speaker 7: his quarterback. In fact, he caught forty five touchdowns from him.
48:19
Speaker 7: I'm curious what things were like when he took over
48:23
Speaker 7: his quarterback. Did did that change the way that you
48:26
Speaker 7: played the game any or what was kind of the
48:29
Speaker 7: team vibe there.
48:31
Speaker 5: No, I'm going to speak for me because I've had
48:34
Speaker 5: this question before. First of all, when Brett became our quarterback,
48:38
Speaker 5: he was just another quarterback.
48:40
Speaker 2: That's fair.
48:40
Speaker 5: He was just another guy. What I love playing with
48:44
Speaker 5: him was he threw firmer, not harder. He threw firmer.
48:50
Speaker 5: I played a lot with my back to the defense,
48:53
Speaker 5: so I played a lot in the middle. You know,
48:55
Speaker 5: you're running stops and in between linebackers, and skinny scene
49:00
Speaker 5: means you want to be able to cheat. That's why
49:03
Speaker 5: I've never been hit in the face. When you can
49:06
Speaker 5: cheat because you know a ball is not going to
49:08
Speaker 5: move because it's Wendy and Lambeau. The ball's not going
49:12
Speaker 5: to move. One of the windier games we played in well,
49:16
Speaker 5: we played in New York, I think in ninety two
49:19
Speaker 5: or ninety three, and it was really Wendy and I
49:22
Speaker 5: caught I think eleven, but I caught eleven because he
49:26
Speaker 5: could throw it through the wind. And so playing with
49:30
Speaker 5: you know, I'm going to combine Mike because he brought hope.
49:35
Speaker 5: When I say hope, he came from San Francisco, you
49:39
Speaker 5: would be foolish not to know what they accomplished by
49:42
Speaker 5: the time we got Mike in nineteen ninety two, and
49:45
Speaker 5: you knew he was calling to play. So he was.
49:48
Speaker 5: He wasn't the architect of the system, but he was
49:51
Speaker 5: the architect of what they were doing. And so the
49:55
Speaker 5: hope was, we're going to score points. We are not
49:59
Speaker 5: going to lose games seventeen, fourteen, thirteen, ten, nine, seven.
50:06
Speaker 5: We ain't losing those games. We're not gonna have any
50:08
Speaker 5: more of those. So he changed that hope. Okay, now
50:13
Speaker 5: if we're if we can score twenty eight, where does
50:16
Speaker 5: that put us. We know we're gonna get off, We're
50:19
Speaker 5: gonna probably score twenty four. Now twenty four in the nineties.
50:22
Speaker 5: Let me tell you something, not the track that would
50:25
Speaker 5: attract me tonight. If you're going to score twenty four,
50:28
Speaker 5: that's attract me. So when when when Mike and Brett
50:32
Speaker 5: and all of that hope came together, we had to
50:36
Speaker 5: take off because now you got to look. Reggie White
50:39
Speaker 5: wants to come play with you. Sean Jones, Sean Jones
50:44
Speaker 5: wants to come play with you. People don't remember Seawn
50:47
Speaker 5: Jones in Houston. Sehn Jones was a monster. John Jones
50:51
Speaker 5: wants to come to Green Bay. You know, I made it.
50:55
Speaker 5: I always tell a story. If you've seen what love
50:58
Speaker 5: got to do with it with Phil told said that
51:01
Speaker 5: he wanted to do a song with Tina. I was like,
51:04
Speaker 5: I turned it. Yeah, Reggie White want to make a
51:06
Speaker 5: song when I can see him? Yeah, you know, Sean
51:09
Speaker 5: Jones want to come to Green Bay and play with
51:11
Speaker 5: I can Tina. You know. So the hope changed because
51:16
Speaker 5: now these people want to come to Green Bay and
51:21
Speaker 5: play football. Green Bay when I first got there was
51:24
Speaker 5: the NFL graveyard. If you went to Green Bay as
51:28
Speaker 5: a veteran, your career was over. Laying his simple, short
51:32
Speaker 5: and sweet, and so all that hope and change kind
51:36
Speaker 5: of happened at once, and so now you start to
51:40
Speaker 5: get the free Hey look remember now Charles Woodson came
51:43
Speaker 5: to green Bay and played. Yeah. You see, when you
51:49
Speaker 5: start to change the hope and you start to change
51:52
Speaker 5: the mentality of the players to where not we wish
51:58
Speaker 5: or we hope we can win, it's like, well, they
52:03
Speaker 5: are going to score thirty, we just have to give
52:06
Speaker 5: up twenty nine. We give up twenty nine, we win.
52:08
Speaker 5: And so all that rush kind of started to flow
52:14
Speaker 5: into green Bay from about ninety three on until I'll
52:20
Speaker 5: say ar left a couple of years ago. And so
52:25
Speaker 5: when you have that, and I think, when I look
52:28
Speaker 5: at my green Bay Packers, now I'm saying this, I
52:30
Speaker 5: don't watch a lot of football, but they are two
52:34
Speaker 5: players away of hope to where they get in the
52:39
Speaker 5: game against Philly and they're not trying to win or
52:43
Speaker 5: hoping to win. They go out do what they need
52:46
Speaker 5: to do. They are two players a way of changing
52:49
Speaker 5: that mentality, I believe. And I don't know what position
52:52
Speaker 5: those two players are. I'm just saying that's what I
52:55
Speaker 5: know because I lived I lived it. Here at South Carolina.
52:58
Speaker 5: I lived it when I came here. I've lived it
53:01
Speaker 5: in Green Bay, and I think when you can get that,
53:04
Speaker 5: we got a Brett Farr. Nobody knew who he was,
53:07
Speaker 5: what he brought to the table. He was a lot
53:10
Speaker 5: like me, enjoyed playing football. It wasn't a game. It
53:13
Speaker 5: wasn't work. It wasn't oh I'm just hey man, hey
53:17
Speaker 5: Sterre you running the curl? Yeah? I mean you know.
53:21
Speaker 5: And I've told this story, well, Brett told this story first.
53:24
Speaker 5: I would have never told this story when his first
53:27
Speaker 5: when he first came in the game against Cincinnati in
53:30
Speaker 5: nineteen ninety two, he didn't know the signals. I called
53:34
Speaker 5: all the players and they couldn't understand. Mike couldn't understand
53:38
Speaker 5: how I knew the signals. And I wasn't, of course
53:40
Speaker 5: back beat root. But the thing was, it was so
53:46
Speaker 5: wonderful to be in that group with Brett and John Mkowski,
53:52
Speaker 5: Ty Detmer, Mark Brunnell, Kurt Warner. I had Kurt Warner
53:56
Speaker 5: for a training camp man. Just being around guys like that,
54:00
Speaker 5: learning and more importantly laughing, because trying to win a
54:05
Speaker 5: game wasn't a struggle. Trying to win a game was fun.
54:08
Speaker 5: I mean in the nineties, my last few years playing
54:12
Speaker 5: foot trying to win a game was fun because we
54:16
Speaker 5: knew we had a system offensively, We knew we were
54:19
Speaker 5: building a system defensively. We had Reggie White and Sean Jones,
54:23
Speaker 5: just to name a few, the right butler in the backfield.
54:27
Speaker 5: It was just a matter of time before it came together.
54:33
Speaker 5: And when it came together, you're like, they're gonna be
54:35
Speaker 5: here for a while now, I mean, this ain't the
54:38
Speaker 5: one This ain't the one hit wonder. When this comes together,
54:42
Speaker 5: they gonna be here for a while.
54:43
Speaker 2: Yeah.
54:43
Speaker 6: I have one last question for you, Sterling, because we
54:46
Speaker 6: know you have you're a busy guy.
54:47
Speaker 4: You have lots to do.
54:51
Speaker 6: Actually, everybody, okay, well we'll let you get ready, We'll
54:55
Speaker 6: let you well, let's watch Jeopardy.
54:59
Speaker 4: Whatever does you have to do?
55:00
Speaker 6: But so my question is, I know that after you retired,
55:03
Speaker 6: you entered the broadcast booth and you were an analyst
55:07
Speaker 6: for ESPN for a few years, and then you were
55:10
Speaker 6: also a studio analyst for the NFL network.
55:12
Speaker 4: Are you still currently doing that? I thought you were,
55:15
Speaker 4: but maybe not.
55:16
Speaker 5: No, I am completely retired. Okay, you guys have bothered me.
55:23
Speaker 6: I was just I was going to ask you, so,
55:27
Speaker 6: did you have any challenges moving from the field to
55:30
Speaker 6: the broadcast booth?
55:31
Speaker 4: But did you find that not at all?
55:34
Speaker 5: No, you know, and I don't mean to sound racial,
55:38
Speaker 5: but I came up in racial times, right. The white
55:41
Speaker 5: American dream was you go to college, you get your
55:45
Speaker 5: degree so you can compete for a job. Okay, I
55:50
Speaker 5: did that. I just happened to play football on the side.
55:53
Speaker 5: I got my degree. I don't know what I can do,
55:58
Speaker 5: but you said that this will allow me to knock
56:02
Speaker 5: on someone's door and say this is what I can
56:04
Speaker 5: do for your company. To show you how ironic my
56:09
Speaker 5: life is has been will be. I didn't talk to
56:13
Speaker 5: the press as a media, and when I played, I
56:15
Speaker 5: didn't talk to the media. So how did I end
56:18
Speaker 5: up at ESDN Because it wasn't that I couldn't talk.
56:23
Speaker 5: I just didn't think that I as a player, as
56:27
Speaker 5: a young player, I didn't think I was being treated
56:31
Speaker 5: fairly when you asked me a question, if you say
56:34
Speaker 5: to me, Carl said that you might have been the
56:37
Speaker 5: slowest receiver he ever covered. I got to address what
56:41
Speaker 5: Carl said. You're not asking me about me and my
56:44
Speaker 5: struggles when I'm dealing with what I'm going through. So
56:47
Speaker 5: if you come to me and say, my head coach
56:49
Speaker 5: says that two twenty you're too big to play receiver,
56:52
Speaker 5: what am I going to say? You don't know what
56:54
Speaker 5: he's talking about. You know what we need to do
56:57
Speaker 5: is to get a new head coach up in here.
57:01
Speaker 5: I'm going to address that. If he said that, then
57:04
Speaker 5: I guess we need to get on a plane where
57:06
Speaker 5: we can lose some weights. I just thought it was
57:08
Speaker 5: unfair to me. If you want to know about me
57:11
Speaker 5: leading me with someone else's question. That was half of it.
57:15
Speaker 5: The other half is when I left South Carolina after
57:22
Speaker 5: training in the heat and understanding what the NFL brought
57:25
Speaker 5: to the table and what it was, and I was
57:27
Speaker 5: comfortable in our system, I was like, they're gonna want
57:30
Speaker 5: to talk to me and I ain't gonna have none
57:33
Speaker 5: to say. But I never said no. I would always
57:37
Speaker 5: say not right now, Hey, Starlett, can we talk to you?
57:40
Speaker 5: Not right now? Guys. I would go get in the
57:42
Speaker 5: shower and get dressed, and the guys would be like, hey,
57:44
Speaker 5: can we talk to you not right now? Guys. I
57:47
Speaker 5: get my car and go home, come back the next day. Hey, Starling,
57:51
Speaker 5: Kimp not right now. That's how I.
57:54
Speaker 4: Love that prase Iver.
57:57
Speaker 1: I have heard him say that to a thousand and
58:00
Speaker 1: people with me and him be together.
58:03
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, literally. What about my other favorite? How can
58:09
Speaker 5: you tell a kid no? Well, first of all, I
58:12
Speaker 5: didn't tell you kid no, and I say no to
58:15
Speaker 5: my kids. If I could say no to my kids,
58:18
Speaker 5: it's really easy to tell your kid you're just gonna
58:24
Speaker 5: have to hang in there.
58:27
Speaker 2: See me. At another time, I might say.
58:29
Speaker 5: Yes exactly, but no, my my, my NFL career, my
58:35
Speaker 5: time playing football has been so wonderful, and like I said,
58:39
Speaker 5: I've made some tremendous friends, and carl Lee and his
58:42
Speaker 5: wife Donna, and son Dominique and his mom and his
58:45
Speaker 5: family have been wonderful to me. And the years and
58:48
Speaker 5: the summers and the springs I would come up to
58:51
Speaker 5: Charleston when he was coaching at uh AT in Charleston.
58:54
Speaker 5: There at the school West Virginia State. It was just
58:58
Speaker 5: so much fun to be around people that loved doing
59:01
Speaker 5: what they were doing. And it's you know, there's a
59:05
Speaker 5: lot of people doing a job, but they're not doing
59:07
Speaker 5: what they want to do. When you're around people who
59:10
Speaker 5: do what they want to do. It's infectious. You want
59:13
Speaker 5: to be around that. You want to understand their journey,
59:15
Speaker 5: and they're walking, you want to go. You know, well,
59:17
Speaker 5: I don't want to make my walk better. I just
59:19
Speaker 5: want to know about your walk and how you did
59:21
Speaker 5: this and how you got here, and you know what
59:23
Speaker 5: heels and did you have any obstacles and all. I mean,
59:27
Speaker 5: it was just so, you know, and like Carl, And
59:31
Speaker 5: I can't even tell you the last time I saw Carl,
59:33
Speaker 5: But anytime we get on the phone, it's fifteen seconds
59:38
Speaker 5: is serious, and forty five seconds, forty five minutes the
59:41
Speaker 5: last you know. It's just that's just the way we are.
59:47
Speaker 5: And I don't have to talk to him for another
59:49
Speaker 5: two months, and it's just like I talked to him yesterday.
59:52
Speaker 5: But that's what I learned about life in sports, is
59:56
Speaker 5: that if you end up chasing someone else's dream, you
1:00:00
Speaker 5: were gonna be a miserable cuss when it's all sit
1:00:03
Speaker 5: and doune, and you're gonna feel like you're gonna hate
1:00:07
Speaker 5: people for not seeing your career the way you see it.
1:00:10
Speaker 5: You're gonna hate people for thinking that. As a matter
1:00:13
Speaker 5: of fact, I was in the doctor's office today, and
1:00:15
Speaker 5: the guy was like, Hey, can I bring my buddy
1:00:17
Speaker 5: in here? Who he's just signed in to be a
1:00:19
Speaker 5: doctor here. I'm like sure, doctor goes, hey, name the
1:00:22
Speaker 5: three greatest game cops. He goes George Rogers, Sidney Wright,
1:00:27
Speaker 5: Alexon Jeffert. Then he walked in and sees me and
1:00:31
Speaker 5: he goes, Oh my god. I can't believe I why
1:00:36
Speaker 5: that's your listen. I can't be mad as your listen.
1:00:40
Speaker 5: I just want you to know, though, ain't nobody wore
1:00:43
Speaker 5: number eighty, nobody wore number two since nineteen eighty seven.
1:00:46
Speaker 5: I ain't saying those other guys ain't good that nobody's
1:00:50
Speaker 5: worn number two since nineteen eighty. Now George's number is
1:00:54
Speaker 5: retired and the number two is retired. Those other guys
1:00:58
Speaker 5: are outstanding players. But I like your list. I like
1:01:05
Speaker 5: your list.
1:01:06
Speaker 1: Well, let me let me let us let me close
1:01:09
Speaker 1: us out by first, Sterling. I want to I want
1:01:12
Speaker 1: to make sure people are are aware if our friendship
1:01:17
Speaker 1: has been started on the field but ended up. I
1:01:22
Speaker 1: really believe in his opportunity to come to West Virginia
1:01:27
Speaker 1: State when I was the head coach.
1:01:29
Speaker 2: He brought uniforms home and away. Oh wow, we'd played.
1:01:33
Speaker 1: We played a couple of games down in South Carolina,
1:01:36
Speaker 1: or maybe it was in North Carolina, and yeah, we can't. Yes,
1:01:42
Speaker 1: so he put us up like the whole hotel bill.
1:01:48
Speaker 1: He covered it.
1:01:52
Speaker 5: To me.
1:01:52
Speaker 1: When you look at that, that told me then if
1:01:57
Speaker 1: I didn't know on the field, the fun that we
1:01:59
Speaker 1: had on the field, the conversations that we had after that,
1:02:04
Speaker 1: if I didn't know he was a friend and a
1:02:07
Speaker 1: great friend and a great person, that would have that
1:02:11
Speaker 1: That was enough because who does that?
1:02:14
Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, and come down?
1:02:16
Speaker 4: He could have said right now.
1:02:19
Speaker 2: Exactly. And the guys that that played, you know, snooty,
1:02:25
Speaker 2: aren't they?
1:02:28
Speaker 1: All those guys they what.
1:02:34
Speaker 4: Hollis?
1:02:34
Speaker 1: Yes, I mean those guys remember us. Yes, Hollis was
1:02:38
Speaker 1: there too. And all those guys remember that. And and
1:02:44
Speaker 1: what I'm proud of is for them they're thinking in
1:02:48
Speaker 1: their mind. Man, we met Sterling Shaw, and not only
1:02:51
Speaker 1: did we meet him, we became his friend. He became
1:02:54
Speaker 1: our friend, and he did all these things for us.
1:02:57
Speaker 1: He'd show up on the way games anywhere close to
1:02:59
Speaker 1: South Carolina, North Carolina, he was gonna show up. He
1:03:02
Speaker 1: was going to be at the hotel, you know.
1:03:04
Speaker 5: To aim to an October game at Wesen.
1:03:09
Speaker 2: Not gonna do that again.
1:03:13
Speaker 5: But yeah, came to a winter.
1:03:15
Speaker 6: Day like what, I hope they bought you, like a
1:03:19
Speaker 6: yellow jacket, jersey or something.
1:03:22
Speaker 5: He said, you know what, Carl that and that had
1:03:25
Speaker 5: nothing to do with me or you, because me and
1:03:29
Speaker 5: you were both those guys. We were the Siegs man.
1:03:32
Speaker 5: We were looking for help. I'm like, you know, I
1:03:36
Speaker 5: went from when I was younger, based on how we
1:03:40
Speaker 5: grew up and where we came from. I was looking
1:03:42
Speaker 5: for a hand and I think based on how I
1:03:48
Speaker 5: saw our situation or how we saw our situation, that
1:03:51
Speaker 5: looking for a hand turned into a handout because that's
1:03:54
Speaker 5: what we need. And we went from a handout to
1:03:59
Speaker 5: a hand And I didn't have to bow or had
1:04:03
Speaker 5: to promise or you know, if I ever, I don't
1:04:06
Speaker 5: have to do that. I'm like, look, somebody asked me
1:04:09
Speaker 5: for help. I'm helping. Now. I might not be able
1:04:11
Speaker 5: to help the way you won't, but I'm gonna help.
1:04:14
Speaker 5: And I just think that is a direct result in
1:04:17
Speaker 5: how we were raised. That's a direct result of the
1:04:19
Speaker 5: people that were in my life. As like I said,
1:04:23
Speaker 5: when I was following. I got a chance to follow
1:04:25
Speaker 5: some tremendous leaders who did not lead from the front.
1:04:30
Speaker 5: I wish young people would stop believing that to be
1:04:33
Speaker 5: a leader, you gotta yell the loudest, you got to
1:04:36
Speaker 5: run the fastest, or you got to lift the most weights.
1:04:39
Speaker 5: You don't get to pick and choose when you're gonna
1:04:41
Speaker 5: be a leader. You can't be a leader if you're
1:04:44
Speaker 5: flunking algebra. It's not possible. It don't work that way, Carl,
1:04:50
Speaker 5: be a leader if you're not going to listen to
1:04:52
Speaker 5: your parents, Okay, don't work that way. You can't be
1:04:56
Speaker 5: a leader if you can't lead devotional service on Sunday
1:04:59
Speaker 5: at your church. You don't get to pick and choose
1:05:01
Speaker 5: when you're going to be a leader. You either are
1:05:05
Speaker 5: or you are acting.
1:05:10
Speaker 4: I like it.
1:05:10
Speaker 5: There are many like it, but this one is yours.
1:05:13
Speaker 5: And a lot of people have possessed have ownership. They
1:05:18
Speaker 5: just don't take possession of their own line.
1:05:21
Speaker 1: Well, Brad, we I truly, truly, truly appreciate you coming
1:05:24
Speaker 1: on and.
1:05:25
Speaker 4: Uh, thank you so much and we'll catch up again.
1:05:29
Speaker 2: Man.
1:05:31
Speaker 5: Hey, Uh, As a matter of fact, I need to
1:05:33
Speaker 5: get that some of that money back I'm glad you
1:05:36
Speaker 5: brought that up. There's a couple of hotel bills I'm
1:05:40
Speaker 5: gonna need right now. You know, I didn't I didn't
1:05:44
Speaker 5: want to say anything publicly, but you're trying to rush
1:05:47
Speaker 5: me off.
1:05:48
Speaker 2: The phone, ready to be in the mail. It's in
1:05:51
Speaker 2: the mail.
1:05:56
Speaker 5: Yeah, thank you for having me on a play. All right,
