- 0:00The Tibetan Book of the Dead describes the period from the
- 0:03time of death to the adoption of a new body.
- 0:06In a new birth the individual departs the physical body, which
- 0:11begins to decompose. Next the vital sheath dissolves
- 0:16and following that the mental formations.
- 0:21All these external instruments are left behind in the general
- 0:24case. The Buddhist teaching does not
- 0:27identify a soul or psychic being.
- 0:31Rather, it references the clear light of pure awareness and the
- 0:35stream of awareness that carries out the cause and effect through
- 0:39dependent origination based on the energy and trajectory of
- 0:44past actions. However it is described, it is
- 0:48clear that some form of consistent awareness traverses
- 0:53the state following the death of an individual being in the
- 0:56physical world and encounters experiences and opportunities
- 1:02whereby the past stream of actions bring about the
- 1:06conditions for assuming a new birth in a new body, life, mind
- 1:11complex. Srioro Bindu and the Mother
- 1:14recognized the existence of a psychic being, a soul entity
- 1:19which carries the pure awareness beyond birth and death and
- 1:24rebirth. The psychic being accumulates
- 1:28experiences in each lifetime, and through that it grows and
- 1:32matures in both its conscious awareness and its power to
- 1:36effectuate its focus on the body, life force, and mind that
- 1:41it assumes in each successive birth.
- 1:45The esoteric question arises when we look at the stream of
- 1:48consciousness that persists from life to life and then attribute
- 1:52to it awareness and agency. We see that in the case of the
- 1:57reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and other similar cases that it
- 2:02is possible for the consciousness present in the
- 2:04pure awareness or the psychic being to direct and specify
- 2:09future incarnation conditions. How far can this ability go for
- 2:16a fully awake and fully formed psychic being?
- 2:19The mother clarifies that such a developed soul need not take
- 2:23random births for further experience, but can choose to
- 2:27return to carry out a consistent process and thereby carry with
- 2:32it not just the essence of its experiences but actual mental,
- 2:38vital, or physical capacities as well.
- 2:43While such an instance may be extremely rare, it is useful to
- 2:47understand this possibility, as it may help to explain phenomena
- 2:52we find in certain children with special knowledge or capacities
- 2:56that were clearly not developed and new in their short
- 3:00lifetimes. A disciple asks mother, since in
- 3:06each new life the mind and vital as well as the body are new, how
- 3:10can the experiences of past lives be useful for them?
- 3:14Do we have to go through all the experiences once again?
- 3:19The mother responds quote That depends on people.
- 3:24It is not the mind and vital which develop and progress from
- 3:28life to life, except in all together exceptional cases and
- 3:33at a very advanced stage of evolution.
- 3:35It is the psychic. So this is what happens.
- 3:40The psychic has alternate periods of activity and rest.
- 3:45It has a life of progress resulting from experiences of
- 3:50the physical life, of active life in a physical body, with
- 3:55all the experiences of the body, the vital and the mind.
- 3:59Then normally the psychic goes into a kind of rest for
- 4:04assimilation, where the result of the progress accomplished
- 4:07during its active existence is worked out.
- 4:11And when this assimilation is finished, when it has absorbed
- 4:15the progress it had prepared in its active life on Earth, it
- 4:19comes down again in a new body, bringing with it the result of
- 4:23all its progress. And at an advanced stage it even
- 4:27chooses the environment and the kind of body and the kind of
- 4:32life in which it will live to complete its experience
- 4:35concerning one point or another. In some very advanced cases, the
- 4:40psychic can, before leaving the body, decide what kind of life
- 4:45it will have in its next incarnation.
- 4:48When it has become an almost completely formed and already
- 4:51very conscious being, it presides over the formation of
- 4:55the new body, and usually through an inner influence, it
- 5:00chooses the elements and the substance which will form its
- 5:04body in such a way that the body is adapted to the needs of its
- 5:08new experience. But this is at a rather advanced
- 5:13stage. And later, when it is fully
- 5:16formed and returns to earth with the idea of service, of
- 5:20collective help and participation in the Divine
- 5:24work, then it is able to bring to the body in formation certain
- 5:28elements of the mind and vital from previous lives, which
- 5:33having been organized and impregnated with psychic forces
- 5:37in previous lives, could be preserved and consequently can
- 5:42participate in the general progress.
- 5:46But this is at a very, very advanced stage.
