- 0:42SPEAKER_02: This is part two of the Otakon experience.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Well, sort of.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: It's conventions in general.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: This is the show where my lovely and talented co-host Lila,
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: the six-year-old,
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: tells you what's on her mind.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: I'm six.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: I said 16.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: You said six.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: I'm six.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: Sweetie.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: You'll always be the little girl in my heart.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, Lord.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: I can't believe you're growing up so fast.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, my God.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: My eardrum.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: Anyway, would you... Singular.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Would you like to sing for a little bit?
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: Oh, shut up.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: You sure?
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: I didn't know it was going to start.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, no, no, I'm not recording right now.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Totally.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: You should totally start singing.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: No, no singing?
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: No.
- 1:26Okay.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: I'm good.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: Maybe at the end.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: I don't want them to...
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: Two, not forever?
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: No, trust me.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: They'll be like, oh my gosh, she has such a lovely voice.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: She's like... Anyway.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: So, last episode, we talked about...
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: um, conventions in ye olden days when everything was geared towards white men.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, it really was white men.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: Dinosaurs were walking the earth.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, pretty much.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was men and it was mostly white men, right?
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: Um, women weren't really welcome.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Black people weren't really welcome.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Nobody was really welcome except for white men.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, this is, this is kind of like, you know, um, uh,
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: What was the first one?
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Was it Comic Skate?
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: Girl, I don't know.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: Fuck.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: There's been so many of them, I kind of lost track.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: The thing they started in 2016 that got Trump kick-started.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: I could swear it was called Comic Skate.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: But it was... Okay.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: Well,
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: anyway,
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: it was a bunch of really,
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: really angry white guys who were mad that women were involved in stuff.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: It was either video games or comic books or whatever the hell it was.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: God forbid.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: And they just raged and raged and raged.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: Oh, Lord.
- 2:50SPEAKER_03: Did you see that they have... Oh, God.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: You guys know GTA?
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: Grand Theft Auto?
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: Of course.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: So, I think actually maybe you told me this.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: In the new one, GTA 6, they're gonna... Which hasn't come out yet.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: Everyone's very mad.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: It's a joke.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: Like a running one.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, GTA 5 came out like...
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: It's been a long time.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: There's going to be a female character that you can play as, right?
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: And not, like, a stripper.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: Oh!
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: Wait, she keeps her clothes on?
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: Well, it's not an NPC.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: Like, it's you.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: You can play as her.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: And everyone is,
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: like...
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: Just so you're aware,
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: Grand Theft Auto is the game where you can beat up prostitutes and steal their money.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: So... So, the fact that there's a woman...
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: Like, as a playable character now... No.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: Everyone's like, oh my god, GTA's woke!
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: We can't play this game anymore!
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: Like... Actually, I'm surprised they didn't have... Please.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: GTA V was, like, super customizable.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: Like... No, no female... And there was no female in that one.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: That whole time.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: they updated it a gazillion times to customize it,
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: and they never added a fucking woman that whole time.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: I... I just would have assumed...
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: You would think, right?
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: really,
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: GTA V was like the World of Warcraft of action video games because they just made
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: the one and then they just added new levels and new maps and new quests for literally,
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: this has been going on for almost a decade because it was such a huge,
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: popular open world game,
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: they didn't need to make a new one.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: But I just would assume you could have played as a female because... Nope.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: Why wouldn't you have that option?
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: Because they were appealing to men, of course.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: And now they're trying to appeal to other players, so how the fuck dare they?
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: Not even!
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: Like, it's just... Like, I thought everyone loved Chun-Li.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: You can play as Chun-Li.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: Like, what's the... I don't know why...
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: Like,
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: just,
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: if you're that mad and you want to sexualize this character so badly,
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: just play as her and then,
- 4:57SPEAKER_03: like,
- 4:57SPEAKER_03: shift your camera down so you can look up her panties or something.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: Look up her skirt.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: Like, it's not that serious.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: Seriously.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, oh, okay.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: Like, it's pixels on a screen.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: I promise you'll survive if she has long hair and a butt.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Thank you for listening to Lila Explains, a special summertime edition of the Opinionated Ogre podcast.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: The podcast, like the newsletter, is free.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: There will never be a paywall,
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: but there's still a lot of loving effort put into delivering this content for you
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: to enjoy.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Please consider becoming a paid subscriber for only $5 a month or just $50 a year.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Your support makes all of this possible,
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: and I cannot thank you enough for being a part of the overabundance.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: All these years that we've been playing video games with male characters,
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: you want to be a boy now,
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: right?
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: That's how it works.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: You're right.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: I mean, you wake up every day and you go, God.
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: I wish I had a joystick.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: Anyway, so we're going to move on.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Sorry, I didn't mean it.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: I'm just completely off the call.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: So anyway, so Lila.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Why don't you tell the nice folks at home what conventions are like now that
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: they're no longer a white sausage fest?
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: So, convention culture is definitely a lot different now.
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's definitely still, like, creepy people, old white dudes that will creep on you sometimes.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: Not as common.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: And you can easily go and report them, and it should be taken care of if it's at, like, a...
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: a place that's properly staffed, which is most conventions nowadays.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: I mean,
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: Otakon has literally a thousand people staffing it,
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: and that's not even including the security of the actual convention center.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: It's insane.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: And there's, like, every person ever there.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Like, every size, gender, race, doesn't matter.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: Like...
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: You could be anyone and walk into a convention and be fine now.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: And this was very, very surprising for me.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh, shit.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, maybe if you're... Like, I've had a couple experiences where I was, like, creeped out.
- 7:18SPEAKER_03: But I never felt like, oh, this guy's gonna follow me home and murder me.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: Like, I've never had that.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: Like,
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: maybe if I'm wearing a skimpy costume and a guy looks at me weird and I see him,
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: like,
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: in the corner of my eye,
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: like,
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: a few too many times,
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: I go,
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: ugh,
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: and then I go to my mom and it's fine.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 7:40SPEAKER_03: But, like, never...
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: Now... Physically assaulted or anything.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: Lila is... She's 16, she's tall, she's very pretty, and she's annoyingly curvy.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: Which is something that's been annoying the crap out of me since that happened.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: It's like... Sorry!
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: This is gonna cause her problems down the road.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: Um, which it has in school.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: No.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: No.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, you definitely had problems when you were in, uh, Hammond.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: More than once.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: What do you mean?
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: Because guys are just dicks.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: I guess.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: Especially in Hammond.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: A little less so in Washington Liberty, but definitely in Hammond.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: No, I just get told I'm fat at WNO.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: Well, they're fucking weird.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: Moving on.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: But yeah, so this has been a thing that Lila just has to deal with.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: She's got the pretty privilege and the disadvantage.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: I'm cursed.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: I'm so gorgeous.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: Everyone wants a photo with me.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: My cosplays are so amazing.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: I just can't get a break.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: is what he's saying, basically.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: How many pictures do you get at a convention?
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: A lot.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: Although she does have really good customs.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: I do.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: I just said that.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: I thought you were being sarcastic.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, no, when I'm being sarcastic, you'll know I'm being sarcastic.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Okay, whatever.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: See, that was me being sarcastic.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, shut up.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Excuse me.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: So, yes, I was... Now, the first convention we went to was... It was smaller.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: It was more science-y, so it was a little less diverse.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Only because it was a little more science-y, a little more straight-up nerdy-nerdy, as opposed to geeky.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: But then we went to a proper regular convention,
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: and it was just like...
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: I don't even remember what that first convention was.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: It was in a hotel somewhere, but it was... I don't remember.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was like a proper full anime convention.
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: Was it not Oracle?
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: No.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: It was before that.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: I don't remember.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: It might have been Anime USA, but it was a proper regular anime convention, and it was just...
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: like, just straight up rainbow coalition.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: You know, it was everything, just all along the spectrum.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: there were black people,
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: there were Asian people,
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: there were Latino people,
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: um,
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: there were still a whole lot of white people,
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: but they were just,
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: it was obviously a lot of gay people,
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: because they were just...
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh,
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: I,
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: they're such,
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: um...
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: like, a strong connection between, like, gay people and conventions now.
- 10:20SPEAKER_03: Like, I swear to God, you could go up to, especially cosplayers.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: Like,
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: if you talk to a cosplayer and they don't have a pride pin on their bag,
- 10:29SPEAKER_03: like,
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: I'll be so surprised.
- 10:31SPEAKER_03: Like, 75% of the people in wigs at conventions are gonna be gay.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: Like, from personal experience, like, me talking to people...
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's just a really, really open and accepting atmosphere.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: And one of the reasons it's so many is because it is... The atmosphere is wildly different.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: It's so inclusive that this is a place where people know they can come and be who they want to be.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:06SPEAKER_03: Like,
- 11:06SPEAKER_03: I know furry conventions are a separate thing,
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: but we just went to Otakon,
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: which is specifically anime...
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: Bunch of furries.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: And, like, no one cares.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: Nope.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: Like, anything is allowed.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: And that was one of the things that we found to be really, really interesting about these conventions.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: They're not just inclusive.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: They're incredibly supportive of everybody.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Like, they're just... There's people who go and have fun at these conventions.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: Like, in all the... Like, we've been to...
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: We've got to be up close to a dozen conventions in just the last couple of years.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: Because we go to multiple conventions in a year at this point.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: It's like three, sometimes four, if we're pushing it.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: But have you seen... And I was talking to your mother about this.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Have you seen any fights?
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: No.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: Have you seen any heated arguments?
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: No.
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: I've heard stories, but I've never...
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: Encountered now these are conventions.
- 12:15SPEAKER_03: Why was that a thing?
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: I mean it was all guys.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: So there were But I mean these are conventions with 40 plus thousand people.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah awesome con which is another one.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: We go to has over 60,000 people and
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: Sometimes the AC does not work very well.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, sometimes it's really gross and hot and it smells bad because I'm sweating.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: So it's hot, it's sweaty.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: and these are people who are in really elaborate costumes,
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: which makes it even hotter and even sweatier.
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: Yes, it's hard sometimes.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I was just, I was wearing...
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: you want to thug it out for the cosplay yeah i was wearing long sleeves and pants
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: and i was like oh my god i'm miserable and that's not even remotely as heavy as
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: some of the other stuff that people wearing right so these people who are hot
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: sweaty and you know they're they're doing it for their costume but oh my god it's
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: miserable and yet
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: No fights, no huge arguments, no shouting matches.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: It's just people just being calm and enjoying themselves.
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: And there you go.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: I know you were saying at older conventions it's more about promoting things.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: Like, now, I mean, there's definitely that sometimes.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: Like,
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: if you go to,
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: like,
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: the artist alley or something where people are selling their prints or their little figures.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's a huge thing, but that's that floor.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: Not, like, there's, like, panels and workshops and stuff.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: Like,
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: sometimes people just,
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: like,
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: start these little random play dance things,
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: like,
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: in the middle of the hallway.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: I miss that.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: They're so fun.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: That was so awesome.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: They're so fun.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: There are concerts.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: Like, honestly...
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: Just like anything that you can do.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, these shows, these are conventions, right?
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: So now they have panels that talk about a wild variety of stuff.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: They talk about the history of sci-fi or the history of anime or the history of a specific genre.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: of whatever right right there's like cosplay making workshops like they'll teach
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: you how to make like like scaled armor or something like it's yeah how to work with
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: certain plastics or how to work with foam or how to work you know if you want to
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: learn how to make cosplay you know certain stuff cosplay better there's arts and
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: crafts and i don't mean cosplay i mean just regular arts and crafts you know
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: anastasia's
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: made a couple of stuffed animals i learned how to do a ladder stitch at one of
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: these that was a couple of years ago which is you know that was awesome it's like
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: oh crap i don't know how to make a
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: So it's just, there's useful stuff, but some of it's just cutesy.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: And some of it's just, you know, Anastasia made a Pokeball Habitat last year.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Which is awesome.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: It's still up on our shelf.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: It's really cute.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: I'm not even going to get into how to make it.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: But it's super, super cute.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: And it was really easy to make.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: But a lot of fun.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: There's, like, every age is there.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: Like, you'll see, like, parents with their little kids.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: You'll see, like...
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: 60-year-old guys.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: And then also, like, obviously there's me, teenagers that come with their friends.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: Honestly,
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: I would say that the audience,
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: especially,
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: like,
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: these more anime-centered ones,
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: I would argue that it's mostly 20- to 30-year-olds now.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: The exact opposite of what it used to be.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: Because that was the group that wasn't there when I was a kid.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: When I was your age, they weren't there.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: But now it's mostly...
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: In between your group and my group.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: People don't care as much about what you watch and do in your private time.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, but also it's just much more, I mean, anime is way more acceptable.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: So, but even at AwesomeCon, you know, it's just a huge variety of people.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: But again, it's also a very accepting and nurturing atmosphere, right?
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, amateur performers go up on stage and they get wild applause.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: And it doesn't matter... Oh, little idol groups.
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's really cute.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: So what idols are, they're people... I mean, it's mostly women, but not only women.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Some of them are girls.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, some of them... Like, one of them was a senior in high school.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: This is my strong suit.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: I want to explain.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: Go for it.
- 16:41SPEAKER_03: Okay, so...
- 16:42SPEAKER_03: Usually,
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: it's from two,
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: one of two rhythm games that are super popular and also come with,
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: like,
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: their respectable animes.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: What's a rhythm game first?
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: A rhythm game, well, I'm sure you guys know, like, Dance Dance Revolution, stuff like that, right?
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: What do you mean?
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: You know, like, Piano Tiles?
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: You guys ever played Piano Tiles?
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: these are the games where you just dance on the...
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: You do the steps on the thing and the screen...
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: You have to follow the instructions on the screen.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, these games have been around for... It's not that, but... But it's something similar.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: Just, like, little, like, mobile games that come with, like...
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: their set of, like, original songs by these voice actors.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: And there's, like, a bajillion characters.
- 17:31SPEAKER_03: Like, at least... So there's Love Live!
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: and there's Project Sekai, which are the two biggest ones.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Project Sekai comes with... I mean, they're popular here, but they're huge in Japan.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: Ginormous in Japan, yeah.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Huge in Japan and Korea.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: Project Sekai includes all Vocaloid.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: So, like, if you think of Hatsune Miku, which is, like, if you know Vocaloid...
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: Now, a Vocaloid is a completely computer-generated... It's just a voice.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: It's a computer-generated performer.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: This is not a real person.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: Several people have the rights to her.
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: You can,
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: like...
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: As long as you get the voice software,
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: you can just make a song,
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: publish it,
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: and if it's her voice,
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: it's by Miku.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: And it'll go under... It's not an AI...
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: exactly no but it's a program that you can write the song and she will sing it yes
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: yeah and there's a character yes right there's all these different characters the
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: most popular long flowing blue pigtails right the most popular one is right which
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: anastasia absolutely adores go look her up we've had i'll put a picture of her in
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: the thing like anastasia's had a post of her for years
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, anyway.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: But there's the Vocaloid and then all these,
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: like,
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: smaller bands within the game that are not Vocaloids but characters.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: And,
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: like,
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: people will dress up as them and perform the songs,
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: like,
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: with other people cosplaying from that group.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: Right, they don't sing the songs.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: They don't sing.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: They lip-sync.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Or not even sometimes.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, sometimes they lip-sync.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: Sometimes they sing it.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: But they perform their own original dances.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: No.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: Wrong.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: They're not... They don't necessarily do the dance.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: Love Live.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, I don't know about Love Live.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: I'm talking about the... Project I... That we've watched.
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: Those are original dances.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: Those are choreographed.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Well, they're choreographed, but they're not from... Five... Yeah.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Wait, Anastasia.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: The dances that Project... That Project... They play... Star Trek.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: When you're playing the game...
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: They have the dance behind the screen.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: They're doing that.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Are you sure?
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: That's how everyone knows what to... It's already done.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: It's the stances that Star Shark Diva does.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Are those original dances or are those from a game?
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: Well, are they cosplaying people from... I don't think so, but they're doing... Then that's different.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but they're doing... It's not an original song.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: They're doing, I mean, it's not their song.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: It's a song in Korean.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: Korean?
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: Well, it's either Korean or Japanese.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: K-pop?
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: I can't tell.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: You can't tell?
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: It's Japanese.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: It's Japanese?
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: It is Miku.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: So it is.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: But is it... It doesn't seem to be... It doesn't seem choreographed.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Like, they're... It doesn't seem like the dance is from a game.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: It seems like dance is that they came up with.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: It probably is.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: We're gonna have to check that one.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: I'm telling you it is.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: Alright.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: That's why they have... Do you remember, like, the Love Live dance plays?
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: Random dance plays.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: It's that.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: People know the dances to certain songs.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: Like, you can look up, like, Miku music video.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: She's doing a dance.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: They're probably doing that.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: I'll have to show you a video, because you haven't been with us too long.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: No, I don't know what you're talking about.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: You haven't been to Starstruck Diva.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: No.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: That sounds like their own group.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: I don't know about that.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: That's what I'm saying.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: You would love them.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: They're so much fun to watch.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: Went on a little tangent here.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Me, Anastasia, and Lillian discovered them last year, and her and Lillian love them.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: When was they last year?
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: Wait, where are you?
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: When was they?
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: oh yeah that was them yes those were choreographed dances by those were vocaloids
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: yes yes okay all right yeah all right all right all right anyway so i'm right
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: you're wrong thank you whatever i know more about this than you so i will shave
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: your head oh exactly wear a wig that's true for your cosplay it'll be less sweaty i
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: don't even sweat under my wig though
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: I don't know why it's so uncomfortable for you guys to wear a wig.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: Like, it's not that bad for me.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: And I have a ton of hair.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: That's probably why.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: You already have a ton of hair.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: I can't feel it.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Your sweat glands are probably dead already.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, wow.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: Lila has extremely thick hair.
- 21:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: Her sweat glands have probably just... Do they know what I look like?
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: I don't think so.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think I've posted pictures of you.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: Thanks.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: Okay, so she's about five... So, anyway...
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: Just edit that out.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: They get up on... Hell no.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: What do you mean?
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: Leaving it all in.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: So they get up on stage,
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: and they do these things,
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: and sometimes they are great,
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: and sometimes they are not great.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: But you cheer anyway.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: You cheer anyway.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: Last year, a woman got up on stage, and she was singing.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: Very pitchy.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: Now, she was singing, singing.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: And...
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: Objectively bad.
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: We sat there and we sat through it and we applauded and we just all just kept our
- 22:46SPEAKER_02: faces stone straight,
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: even though on the inside we were all dying because she was not...
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but you can do that at a convention.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: But you can do that at a convention.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: You can go and be bad, and people will be like, yes, amazing, love.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: You won't get made bad.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: Everyone was very supportive.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: No one booed her because they probably would have been taken outside and beaten.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: If anyone had booed her,
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: they would have been booed,
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: and then they would have taken outside and been hurt.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: It's all for fun anyway.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: Women who would not feel comfortable dressing in particularly revealing outfits...
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: Would, are very comfortable wearing those outfits at the convention.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a lot of cheek.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: A lot of cheek.
- 23:29SPEAKER_02: A lot of cheek.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Sometimes way more than I'm comfortable seeing.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: Especially when it's younger people and it's like, please stop that.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: The rules are you just have to have your nipples covered and your two holes covered.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sometimes.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: And that's pretty much it.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: Some people take advantage of that a little too much.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: There's a thing called, like, bunny girl cosplay.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: I'm sure...
- 23:52SPEAKER_03: you can imagine just think playboy bunnies but it's like a character like you take
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: someone from a show you put their wig on like the makeup that you do for their
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: usual cosplay and then a bunny suit and you go oh yeah i'm power from chainsaw man
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: but like bunny girl like okay all right then but you do what you want like doesn't
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: matter yeah
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: I'm not super jazzed about that because, you know, people do bring their kids there.
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: That's true, but there are also, like, hentai vendors.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: Like, they sell, like, body pillows and stuff.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: So what are you going to do?
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah,
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: well,
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: hentai,
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: if you're not familiar with it,
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: is Japanese...
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: I think they're probably happy to not...
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Well,
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: if you're going to mention it.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: Japanese porn.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: My bad.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: Basically.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: Japanese animated porn.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:38SPEAKER_03: So, which is... There are also hentai panels, hentai showings, past...
- 24:44SPEAKER_03: like 11 i thought it started like 9 or 10 no that's 18 plus stuff yeah after like
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: 11 you do have to have like a you can't just walk in you do have to have like a
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: badge and like your id saying like yeah so after 11 is when they get to like the
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: really really adult stuff so if you have your kids leave them every time i tell
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: anastasia yeah i'm gonna stay late and go to that she's like no so
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: It's very funny.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: Anyway, so, yes, conventions are wildly different now.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, these conventions are with 40-something thousand people.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: Anastasia, this year, right, she's 14 now, felt safe enough...
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: to stay by herself at um an idol show that she wanted to finish and stay there by
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: herself like an extra 30 minutes and then come find us afterwards because me and
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: lillian wanted to go to a different panel that was starting and she wanted to
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: finish because she was really enjoying the show and a year ago she never would have
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: done that
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: And even now, in, like, any other circumstance, she would never be by herself.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: She would just not be comfortable hanging by herself someplace and then coming to find us.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, I go off on my own all the time.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: Well, you do.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: But you're 16.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: That's true, but I was 14.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but you're also, like, bigger and more physically capable.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: You just call me fat.
- 26:14SPEAKER_03: Everyone heard it here.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, I didn't want to say, no.
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: You just called me big and manly.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: But, I mean, you're a lot taller.
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: You're also a lot stronger.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: Anastasia is smaller and slater than you.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: And not as strong.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: Also, not quite as into the self-defense as you are.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: I haven't gone in forever.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: pretty sure you could break her in half if you put your oh right well we're not
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: gonna find out um what no cage match if you pay what two dollars
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: Five, four dollars.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: Fight, fight, fight, fight.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: So, you know, but this place, I mean, even with 40,000 people, she felt so comfortable in this place.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, granted, she's been here, like, this is her fourth time in this particular hall.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: In this convention center.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: You get familiar.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: Which is huge.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: Because even with 40,000 people, even with 60,000 people, it's never that crowded.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's across three buildings.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: That's how big it is.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: It's large.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: And yet it's pretty well laid out.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: Like, you never really get lost.
- 27:27SPEAKER_03: It's well regulated.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: So she was so comfortable that she just stayed and then she came and found us.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: And it wasn't a problem.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: It was easy for her to come find us.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: It was like, hooray.
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: Like, I, okay.
- 27:40SPEAKER_03: This, it's very fun.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: Everyone is very accepting and stuff.
- 27:44SPEAKER_03: There are, like, I have a couple stories.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: Like, nothing crazy.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: But still.
- 27:50SPEAKER_03: Like, creepers sometimes.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: Well, I remember that one guy from last year.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: What one guy from last year?
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: We were in the,
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: I forget what show it was,
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: but he,
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: like,
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: we had moved over,
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: and then he just kind of courted you and started chit-chatting you.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: And we didn't notice that at first.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: We were like, where the hell is Lila?
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: And we turned around and you were talking to a guy,
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: but we were far enough away that we couldn't tell if you wanted to talk to him,
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: if you were voluntarily talking to him,
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: or if he had kind of cut you off and you were trying to figure out how to get the
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: hell away from him.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: It was definitely that, but I didn't feel...
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: I was just like, oh.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: How do I do this nicely?
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: Like he wasn't like, can I sniff your panties?
- 28:34SPEAKER_03: It wasn't like anything crazy.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's the other Japanese anime.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: Which is thankfully not really like a thing here.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: By the way, for our audience, I swear to God, there are vending machines in Japan that sell used anime.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: Used?
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, you didn't know that?
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: What are you talking about?
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: There are literal vending machines in Japan that sell used schoolgirl panties.
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: Okay, but it's not, like, on every corner.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: Oh, no, it's not on every corner.
- 29:05SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: But it is a thing that exists.
- 29:08SPEAKER_03: That's sad.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: Japan's obsession with schoolgirls is so creepy.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: Well,
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: Japan,
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: Japan,
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: it's one of the things when American women are like,
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: America's so misogynist,
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: and I'm like,
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: yeah.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, it is.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: But have you met Japan?
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: They're right.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, my God.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, not to belittle what women go through in the United States, but have you met Japan?
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, they just made, they just raised the age of consent to, what was it, 16 or 17?
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: Crazy.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: This year?
- 29:43SPEAKER_03: What was it, 13, 14?
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: I think it was like 13.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: That's crazy.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: I think it was 13.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: I don't think it was lower than that, but I think it was at least 13.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, gross.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: Because,
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: Japan,
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: even in the United States,
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: with Republicans,
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: even they don't have it that fucking low.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, if they could, but like, they're not that shameless yet.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:07SPEAKER_02: You need your parents' permission and the permission of a judge for that to be a thing, you know.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: They don't just have it as law.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: But Japan did.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: Because... That's crazy.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: Japan.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: That's crazy.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: What?
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: You didn't want to get married at 13 and start popping out the puppies?
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: Guys, play Class of 09.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: Oh, Jesus Christ.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: Oh, boy.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: That's a fucking... That game is... That's an experience.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: Most realistic high school experience ever.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: Everyone should have been Japanese in that game.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: I know they're all anime characters.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: It's American.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: I know, that's what makes it so scary.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: So, yeah.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: What else has happened to you?
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: Oh, I've had a couple guys, like, not really respect my personal space at all.
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: Like, if they ask for a photo, and, like, I'm not going to say no.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: Like,
- 30:59SPEAKER_03: unless you're giving me,
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: like,
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: a really,
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: or if you smell really bad,
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: and,
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: like,
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: I don't really want to,
- 31:04SPEAKER_03: maybe I'll say no,
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: but...
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: They literally sell body deodorant at conventions because people forget to use it.
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: Honestly, I haven't had a smell problem lately.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: The last few conventions didn't really stink.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Except for the guy at the sumo wrestling.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: Holy crap!
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: That was really bad, and it was 9 a.m., 9 a.m.
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, really.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: What are you doing this year already stinking like this?
- 31:31SPEAKER_03: Anyway,
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: I've had pictures of,
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: like,
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: guys asking for a photo,
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: and then,
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: like,
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: their friend takes the phone,
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: and then they,
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: like,
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: grab my waist or something.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: Like, that's... It's like, that's not okay.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's not good.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: Now, they have signs up saying, you know, do not touch without consent.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: Right, cosplay is not consent, yeah.
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: So... And honestly, like, every cosplayer is just gonna, like, if you...
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: If you have a cosplay that you know is going to get attention,
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: not necessarily that it's revealing or anything,
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: if you have a cool prop or something,
- 32:03SPEAKER_03: people are going to want a photo with you.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: If you have anything cool on, you're going to get asked for a photo.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: With that many people, someone's going to recognize it and be like, oh my god!
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: Even if you're from the most niche anime ever.
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: At least one person is going to come up to you and be like, oh, my gosh, this is so cool.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, I've done that.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: I freaked out.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: Someone was dressed as Amalthea from The Last Unicorn.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: And I was like, oh, my gosh, you're The Last Unicorn.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: I need a picture with you.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: And she was very happy I recognized her because I don't think anyone else did because people suck.
- 32:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: But, like, stuff like that.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: Like, just people getting, like, a little too close.
- 32:41SPEAKER_03: There was this one time I had a guy in a Bowser costume.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: I was outside the bathroom clearly waiting for someone.
- 32:47SPEAKER_03: I had, like, three bags in my hands.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: And I was in Nell from Bleach.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: Go look her up.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: The costume is modified a little bit because... Modified a lot.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: well not that much but modified so i'm covered yeah there's no cleavage showing no
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: well there's no cleavage for now i thought there was under boob well oh right yeah
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: that's what it was yeah sorry um the adult version we're talking about this there's
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: a kid version of now then she turns into adult which is such an anime thing
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: I love her, though.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: I love her character a lot.
- 33:17SPEAKER_02: Yes, her character's fun, but, you know, the fact they took a little kid and turned her into an adult.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, that was her true form all along.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: It's like... Right.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: That's so anime.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: It's like, okay, thank you, creepers.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she's my queen anyway, though.
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: Um...
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: What was I going to say?
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: Anyway, this guy in a Bowser costume, like, full-on, like, mascot suit type thing.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: Looked like he was sweating a lot.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: With, like, his friends.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: They looked maybe late 20s, early 30s.
- 33:47SPEAKER_03: They come up to me.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: This was a couple years ago.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: Maybe, like, one and a half.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: Or last Otakon.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Um...
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: And they asked for a photo,
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: and I take a photo with him,
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: and then the guy in the Bowser suit was like,
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: can you pet me?
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: Like, can you, like, pet me for a photo?
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: And I politely declined, and that was that.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: But, like, that's a little, kind of an odd request.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: I also, at this last Otacon, had a guy... You were right there.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: It's not, like, a creepy thing, but, like, I'm just kind of wondering what he did with that.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: Like, okay, so I was in Blair from Soul Eater, which is... I was covered.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: It was, like, my arms and, like, my shins out.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: Like, nothing crazy.
- 34:36SPEAKER_03: And he asked me for a photo...
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: took a photo my little cat pose thing and then he asked me for another photo like
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: the first photo was just me a picture of me and then a selfie like with him like a
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: little too close to my face but like
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: wasn't, like, him trying to squish me.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no.
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: I was just like, oh, I can, like, kind of hear you breathing.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: I don't like that.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: But, like, you know what I mean?
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: And then he had me,
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: like,
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: he gave me a stuffed animal that said something on the front,
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: but I didn't,
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: I couldn't read it.
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: You guys were right next to me.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: I,
- 35:11SPEAKER_03: like,
- 35:11SPEAKER_03: Anastasia or Lillian was holding my bag while this was happening,
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: and I held it,
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: and I posed,
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: and he took a picture,
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: and I don't know what it said!
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: And I'm terrified that it said something horrible and I didn't see.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: It was like a little, it was a cute little like leopard thing.
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: It was small and it was going like,
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: like it was a cute little,
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: and something was on his belly and I didn't see.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: And I hope it wasn't like a crazy.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: Creepy something.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: I'm scared that it was, but I was trying to leave and he asked for like four photos in a row.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: So I was like, okay, well like whatever.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: I'm just trying to.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: Get it done so I can, like, go to this next thing, but... Yep, totally missed that.
- 35:53SPEAKER_03: You were right there!
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: Sorry!
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: Whatever.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: What?
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: I don't police you when you're taking a picture with a guy who's all standing there.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: Generally speaking, if we're all standing there, someone doesn't get too creepy about the whole thing.
- 36:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:05SPEAKER_02: Because we're all standing there.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: That's it, though.
- 36:08SPEAKER_03: I don't really have any, like...
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: But, you know.
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: Crazy con story.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: Certainly nothing that,
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: you know,
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: booth babes used to go to where they would literally get,
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: like,
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: you know.
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: I've never been groped or anything.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, that's good.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: Never been, like, followed out of the convention or anything, like.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: And that's, and generally speaking, that is, I mean, that happens, but it doesn't happen regularly.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: It's rare, though.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: You know,
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: and again,
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: these are huge conventions with tens of thousands of people,
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: and that's just not really a thing.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: You know, and it's not because everyone there is gay.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: It's just... No.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: Just not a thing.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: A lot of them, but, yeah.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: You know, it's just... It's become very family-friendly, you know, except for all the buttcheeks.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: There's that, yeah.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: It's very safe.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: It's very accommodating to just...
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: anyone anyone can go to these you know so if you're on the fence about going you
- 37:05SPEAKER_02: should go yeah I mean even if you're not into anime there's stuff like Awesome Con
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: and there's just oh and um last it was it was last year or earlier this year you
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: went to the um the what was the music video game one you went to what was that
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: called Magfest Magfest music and game fest music and game fest which again I was
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: worried about super fun
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: Because I thought, oh, wait, we're into video game territory again?
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: Video games still tend to be overwhelmingly male-dominated because guys.
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: It was pretty much the same thing.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: You said that I was like, because I didn't get to go to that one.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was just me and my friend, which we weren't walking around with an adult or anything.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: No one was fending anyone off.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: Were you even in costume for that?
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, you did cosplay for that one.
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: I was cosplaying Nico Robin, and my friend was Nami.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: From One Piece, which are also pretty skimpy.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: Like, I was covered.
- 37:59SPEAKER_03: Like, it was, like, a crop top and, like, a long beach skirt type thing.
- 38:02SPEAKER_03: My friend was significantly less covered, but we were good.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: And again, no problems.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: Which I was absolutely shocked about, because... Couple pictures, pretty respectful, like...
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: That's what it was.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: Gamergate.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: That was the first one.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: Gamergate?
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: You didn't hear anything about Gamergate.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: No.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, we're going to have to have that conversation offline.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: I need to tell you about Gamergate.
- 38:26SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: But, yeah.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: So, I was super, super surprised.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: So, even something like games is still a very...
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, definitely.
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: There's still a lot of,
- 38:37SPEAKER_03: like...
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: Touchy world online,
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: but this convention was still...
- 38:42SPEAKER_03: But the thing is,
- 38:43SPEAKER_03: like,
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: the people that you're meeting in,
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: like,
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: a Call of Duty lobby are not the people that are at conventions.
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: Exactly, but that's what I kind of figured.
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: I figured that's who would be at these conventions because it's geared specifically towards gamers.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: And it wasn't, so it was just like... You would actually be really interested in MAGFest.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: Oh, God damn, I'm going next year.
- 39:02SPEAKER_03: Cut that out.
- 39:03SPEAKER_03: But, like...
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: My friend that I was with put a bleep over her name, please.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: We,
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: like,
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: she wasn't the biggest fan of,
- 39:15SPEAKER_03: like,
- 39:15SPEAKER_03: everything,
- 39:15SPEAKER_03: but,
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: like,
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: I was kind of nerding out,
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: and I wanted to stay longer,
- 39:18SPEAKER_02: so you should come.
- 39:19SPEAKER_02: I was dying to go.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: We just, we couldn't afford it.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: Well,
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: it was,
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: we,
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: this was before we,
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: we didn't,
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: we didn't know if there was going to be a government shutdown.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, right, right, right, right.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: So it was just like, I can't do it.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: I wanted to so badly.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: It was fun.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh my god, that's just, it just screamed to me.
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: It was at, uh...
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: Where Kotakon is.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, really?
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: I love that hotel.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's nice.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: I love that hotel.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: What is it?
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: Gaylord?
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: The Gaylord Palms.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: Not Gaylord Palms.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: Gaylord Palms is out of Florida.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: It's the Gaylord, yeah.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: But yeah, oh my god, I love that hotel.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: It's really nice.
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, I'm so excited.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: I'm definitely going this year.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: Because... Bring me...
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: Nah.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: No, you're fine.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: Don't worry about it.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: But only if you beat up on a station.
- 40:07SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: For $4.
- 40:08SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: Alright.
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: We're going to wrap this up.

- 41:12SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 41:13SPEAKER_03: Every year after,
- 41:15SPEAKER_03: like,
- 41:15SPEAKER_03: a con,
- 41:16SPEAKER_03: I just have,
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: like,
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: a solid three weeks where I'm just like,
- 41:21SPEAKER_03: damn,
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: I want to go back.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, con life is, like, is very different than real life.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: It's just so nice.
- 41:28SPEAKER_03: Like, everyone, you can just be so odd and off-putting and no one cares.
- 41:33SPEAKER_03: Like, I can't be a weirdo in real life.
- 41:35SPEAKER_03: Like...
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: I want to be surrounded by freerun cosplays again.
- 41:40SPEAKER_02: Just think of it this way.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: You're 16.
- 41:42SPEAKER_03: I am.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: In about 25 years, maybe 27, eh, about 30 years.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: Short amount of time that I'll have to wait there.
- 41:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: You're going to get to the age where you're going to be like me,
- 41:54SPEAKER_02: where you're going to be like,
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: wait,
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: I don't give a fuck what people think about me.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: So actually that's going to be in 25 years, and I will have to actually wait out those 25 years.
- 42:04SPEAKER_02: I'm afraid you are going to have to wait.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: I'm not down with that, really.
- 42:08SPEAKER_03: I think I...
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: I mean...
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: I think people have to stop caring right now so I can just go to places,
- 42:14SPEAKER_02: like...
- 42:14SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: it did take a while before I just ceased to care what other people thought.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: But when you get there, man, it's just the best.
- 42:20SPEAKER_03: Okay.
