- 0:00Speaker 1: Before we get into talking about the high school playoffs,
- 0:04Speaker 1: how about your thoughts overall with things in the Lone
- 0:08Speaker 1: Star State. We've seen coaching changes made, We've seen abling
- 0:12Speaker 1: Christian go into their first FCS playoffs that's going to happen,
- 0:17Speaker 1: and UIW winning as well, and things like that, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: then of course all roads I don't often say this
- 0:24Speaker 1: tip all roads are leading toward college station All roads
- 0:28Speaker 1: coming up a week from this weekend with this restoration
- 0:32Speaker 1: of the Lone Star Showdown. Can you imagine the possibility
- 0:36Speaker 1: if you have Texas and Texas A and M each
- 0:39Speaker 1: with one loss tie the top the SEC race like
- 0:43Speaker 1: they are right now going into the final Saturday night
- 0:46Speaker 1: of the regular season. What that means and how it
- 0:48Speaker 1: turns the SEC on its collective head.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I think it's important to remember that not that long ago,
- 0:59Speaker 2: the state of Texas was I would say, relatively down
- 1:02Speaker 2: from a college football perspective. I mean, we were having
- 1:05Speaker 2: a scrap and claw and talk about, oh boy, Sam
- 1:08Speaker 2: Houston's doing stuff at FCS, and oh keep an eye
- 1:10Speaker 2: on Division two. We've got a quarter finalists. You know,
- 1:13Speaker 2: it used to be that it was kind of slim
- 1:15Speaker 2: pickens as far as like, you know, real contenders are concerns,
- 1:19Speaker 2: but in twenty twenty four it has been like an
- 1:23Speaker 2: embarrassment of riches as far as college football is concerned
- 1:27Speaker 2: at basically every level. You know, the Division III level
- 1:30Speaker 2: with Harden Simmons and Mary Hard and Baylor. You know,
- 1:32Speaker 2: Division two is cooking as well, a number of teams
- 1:35Speaker 2: in the Division two playoffs in cleaning Angelo State, and
- 1:38Speaker 2: then you've got FCS ranking. You know, it's a good
- 1:40Speaker 2: year in SCS and of course at the FBS level
- 1:43Speaker 2: as you mentioned, and not just you know, obviously you've
- 1:46Speaker 2: got what's going on with A and M in Texas
- 1:48Speaker 2: kind of careening towards one another in what could be
- 1:51Speaker 2: a you know, a showdown for the ages of two
- 1:56Speaker 2: programs that obviously know each other extremely well, and our
- 2:00Speaker 2: think looking forward to an opportunity to reconvene in college station.
- 2:04Speaker 2: But also what's going on with SMU with an opportunity
- 2:07Speaker 2: to win the ACC looking good there, and you know,
- 2:11Speaker 2: kind of a wide open Big twelve with a number
- 2:14Speaker 2: of contenders, maybe some you know, maybe some outside shots
- 2:17Speaker 2: here in the state of Texas. A resurgent Baylor program,
- 2:20Speaker 2: which is not something we thought we would be saying,
- 2:23Speaker 2: I would say overall, like if you were giving a
- 2:26Speaker 2: State of the Union for the State of Texas, I
- 2:30Speaker 2: think that the state of the Union is very strong,
- 2:32Speaker 2: and it's the strongest it's been collectively and holistically in
- 2:36Speaker 2: the State of Texas in quite some time at every level.
- 2:39Speaker 2: And that's exciting for us here because we cover it
- 2:41Speaker 2: from tip to tail, and it's exciting I think for
- 2:43Speaker 2: the state that that takes a lot of pride. In
- 2:47Speaker 2: college but in football in general, especially in the college
- 2:50Speaker 2: football ranks. It's a really good time to be a
- 2:52Speaker 2: college football fan in the state.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Of Texas, no question about that.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Greg Tepper, managing ed or Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine
- 2:58Speaker 1: joining us.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Okay, let's jump to the high school Footall playoffs.
- 3:01Speaker 1: The thing that caught your eye the most in Round
- 3:05Speaker 1: one of the playoffs last week was fill in the blank.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Just stunners. I mean, it's not always that you get
- 3:13Speaker 2: a first round of the playoffs that are filled with
- 3:16Speaker 2: that are filled with with upsets, but you had some seismic,
- 3:20Speaker 2: seismic upsets across the state of Texas. I mean I
- 3:23Speaker 2: counted it up and according to the computer from from
- 3:26Speaker 2: Jerry Forrest. I mean there were twenty teams that pulled
- 3:30Speaker 2: double digit upsets. I mean you had, I mean Fort
- 3:34Speaker 2: Ben Elkins over Alvin Shadow Creek is one of the
- 3:37Speaker 2: biggest upsets in the last twenty years. A plane is simple.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I mean, this is a Shadow Creek team that looked
- 3:42Speaker 2: like it was at the very least the chief challenger
- 3:45Speaker 2: to Summer Creek in sixth A Division two, Region three,
- 3:48Speaker 2: and then suddenly they get up ended by an upstart
- 3:51Speaker 2: fourth place four Bend Elkins team. You had that on
- 3:54Speaker 2: the other side of four Bend IOC. You had kind
- 3:56Speaker 2: of their one of their flagship programs in High Tower
- 3:59Speaker 2: go down to Manvil. It was you know, Alvin on
- 4:01Speaker 2: Fort Ben Crime once again. And then you've got all
- 4:05Speaker 2: like a number of other things that really shook things up.
- 4:08Speaker 2: You had a number of fourth place teams. It's the
- 4:11Speaker 2: playoffs and or you know, not just making the playoffs,
- 4:13Speaker 2: but advance to the second round. And that sets up
- 4:16Speaker 2: what's really interesting as far as conversations about you know,
- 4:19Speaker 2: it's every year you hear people complaining all too many
- 4:22Speaker 2: teams make the playoffs, is it's watered down. You give
- 4:24Speaker 2: them an opportunity to play and sometimes they surprise you.
- 4:27Speaker 2: I mean Van Vleck over Blanco is a bracketbuster in
- 4:30Speaker 2: three A Division two. I mean, Blanco looked like a
- 4:32Speaker 2: team that could win Reagion four, and suddenly they're out
- 4:35Speaker 2: in the first round of the playoffs and Van Vleck
- 4:36Speaker 2: wins their first playoff game since twenty eighteen. I mean,
- 4:39Speaker 2: just huge upsets across the state of Taxes. Now, that's
- 4:42Speaker 2: not to say that there weren't blowouts. Certainly there were
- 4:46Speaker 2: some seventy burgers, some eighty burgers. There was a nine
- 4:48Speaker 2: by Burger out there. Certainly those things happened. But I
- 4:52Speaker 2: would contend to you that I think that we had
- 4:55Speaker 2: overall an extremely exciting first round of the Taxi High
- 4:59Speaker 2: School Football Playoff. And you also had a couple of
- 5:02Speaker 2: teams that I think the best way to say is
- 5:06Speaker 2: maybe they got away with one. They played maybe a
- 5:09Speaker 2: first half or a second half that wasn't necessarily up
- 5:12Speaker 2: to their standard, but then they came out and won
- 5:14Speaker 2: cop Hell's. For example, cop Hell took on Prosper down
- 5:16Speaker 2: twenty one to seven at halftime, they roared back in
- 5:19Speaker 2: the second half win North Crowley. Another one tied at
- 5:22Speaker 2: halftime against Byron Nelson, and suddenly they roared back in
- 5:25Speaker 2: the second half. I've made the point on our site
- 5:28Speaker 2: this week about how I think that the time for
- 5:31Speaker 2: you to get your feet wet is now over that
- 5:35Speaker 2: now that you advanced the area around, if you lay
- 5:38Speaker 2: a clunker in the first half of a game, you're
- 5:40Speaker 2: probably you know, airing up basketballs on Monday. So kind
- 5:44Speaker 2: of the margin for error for these teams has been removed,
- 5:47Speaker 2: and that's what makes kind of all of the intensity
- 5:50Speaker 2: moving forward in these one hundred and seventy six games
- 5:52Speaker 2: all the more interesting.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Visiting with Greg Tapper Baditching ed or Dave Campbell's Texas
- 5:56Speaker 1: Football magazine here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zent. Okay,
- 5:59Speaker 1: let me, I'm gonna do things a little different. I'm
- 6:01Speaker 1: going to scroll through regions in these playoff classifications and
- 6:05Speaker 1: just ask for what leaps off the page of For example,
- 6:08Speaker 1: six AD one, You've got a dec Permian in North Crowley,
- 6:11Speaker 1: you have copp Ellen Lake Highlands, you have Midland Legacy
- 6:13Speaker 1: and EULAs, Trinity and Alan and Richardson.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Most compelling out of those, Uh, I.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Don't know, maybe none of the involved. That feels pretty
- 6:24Speaker 2: if you're talking about a region that feels relatively chalky,
- 6:29Speaker 2: feels like we know what we're getting. I would like
- 6:31Speaker 2: to see what Odessa Permian's got left in the tank.
- 6:34Speaker 2: But I think that North Crowley probably woke up last
- 6:37Speaker 2: week and they've probably got to be your favorite. This
- 6:39Speaker 2: Region one looks Region one. This kind of feels like
- 6:42Speaker 2: the week before the week there in Region one.
- 6:45Speaker 3: All right.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Region two duncan Mill, Rockwall, the Woodland, sy Ranch, North
- 6:49Speaker 1: Forty Waksahatchie, and Conroe and Bridgeland.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I'm really interested in Conrad and Bridgeland. I think that
- 6:55Speaker 2: that is a really interesting ball game down there in
- 6:57Speaker 2: the Houston area. Two teams that I think are playing
- 6:59Speaker 2: really well. And then if you're rock Wall, you know
- 7:01Speaker 2: you're taking on Duncanville. Duncanville I think at this point
- 7:05Speaker 2: needs no introduction, but I will just say this, like
- 7:08Speaker 2: get crazy guy in to fight with him, you know,
- 7:10Speaker 2: like like see if you can just turn this into
- 7:12Speaker 2: a wild shootout. Uh, that's probably your best opportunity for
- 7:15Speaker 2: a little bit of chaos. And I also think walks
- 7:17Speaker 2: out to north Ward is going to be interesting as well.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Region three Side Falls, Katie Ridge Point, north Shore, Houston,
- 7:24Speaker 1: Full Parolanta Task Casita Chalk.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Ridge Point, ridge Point, north Shore's box Office. It might
- 7:30Speaker 2: be the game of the week. H It's a great game.
- 7:32Speaker 2: And for ridge Point this is a this is an
- 7:35Speaker 2: opportunity to go out there and and and and kind
- 7:37Speaker 2: of establish yourself in that upper epchelon of Houston area teams.
- 7:40Speaker 2: This is a team that I think has the the guys,
- 7:44Speaker 2: just the dudes to go out there and hang with
- 7:46Speaker 2: north Shore. The question is going to be can they
- 7:49Speaker 2: find a way past what's been an exceptional defense for
- 7:52Speaker 2: north Shore. I think that is the one of the
- 7:54Speaker 2: games of the week across the state at TECHS.
- 7:55Speaker 1: All right, So to extend that line of thinking further,
- 7:59Speaker 1: is Region three in six a Division one, the toughest
- 8:01Speaker 1: region regardless of classification and division. Think about this, Uh,
- 8:06Speaker 1: let's say they win this. This box Office came a bridgepoint.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Now you're probably looking at Katie. You win that, then
- 8:12Speaker 1: you're probably looking either at a rematch with the task
- 8:14Speaker 1: of Seeder or fools here in the quarterfinals.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:17Speaker 2: No, Region three's loaded and it is you know, once Katie,
- 8:22Speaker 2: Katie kind of can go either way as far as
- 8:24Speaker 2: Division one or Division two. Once they piled into Division one,
- 8:28Speaker 2: it really became probably, uh, there's a couple of others,
- 8:32Speaker 2: maybe like three A Division one Region three kind of
- 8:35Speaker 2: brings to mind as far as real heavy hitting, a
- 8:38Speaker 2: ton of contenders, But yeah, look six A Division one
- 8:40Speaker 2: Region three, as it has been in the past couple
- 8:42Speaker 2: of years, it feels like the real blockbuster region at
- 8:46Speaker 2: least at six.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I And then for folks with these parts in region before,
- 8:49Speaker 1: you got Lake Travis against San Antonio, Johnson, East Central
- 8:51Speaker 1: against Westlico, Westlake against Brennan.
- 8:54Speaker 3: But to Johnson against Los Fresno's.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Look Westlake and Brennan's interesting. Okay, a good Brennan team,
- 9:02Speaker 2: but it's I guess I can't really. I don't know
- 9:04Speaker 2: if people down there in your neck of the woods
- 9:06Speaker 2: understand just how much of a thorn in the side
- 9:10Speaker 2: y'all are to San Antonio. I mean, listen, they are
- 9:14Speaker 2: so tired of getting beat by Austin, plain and simple,
- 9:18Speaker 2: because it happened for the past decade basically, and especially
- 9:21Speaker 2: west Lake in Lake Travis is an opportunity with Brennan
- 9:24Speaker 2: and Johnson to go out there and kind of reclaim
- 9:27Speaker 2: one for the for the Alamo City. I'm not sure
- 9:29Speaker 2: it happens. Those are those are the biggest games. Although
- 9:32Speaker 2: I will stay by the way you to Jonathan and
- 9:34Speaker 2: Lilis Fresdos is fun. That is a Saturday afternoon affair
- 9:37Speaker 2: at the Alamodome to high power offenses on a fast track.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I think that game is gonna be point C.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Let me jump to.
- 9:46Speaker 1: A game that certainly is gonna have your attention because
- 9:49Speaker 1: you're gonna be on the call as you work with
- 9:51Speaker 1: Gary Reasons Friday Night Brennan and Liberty Hill read the
- 9:55Speaker 1: field in Slugerville.
- 9:56Speaker 3: How about your breakdown on that one.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it's Bob. I'm really excited to be on the call,
- 10:02Speaker 2: you know for Liberty Hill. You know what you're getting.
- 10:05Speaker 2: They're gonna run that slot tea. They are banged up
- 10:08Speaker 2: as heck though, I mean they they are. We were
- 10:10Speaker 2: talking earlier with the head coach there, Kent Walker, and
- 10:14Speaker 2: he mentioned I think they've got eleven guys who have
- 10:16Speaker 2: had at least ten carries this year, and he and
- 10:19Speaker 2: almost none of it is by design, you know, it's
- 10:21Speaker 2: just because Okay, one guy goes down, you gotta pick
- 10:23Speaker 2: up another. One guy, another guy goes down, got to
- 10:25Speaker 2: pick up another. But that slot team just keeps on rolling.
- 10:28Speaker 2: The offense has been terrific. Their defense is going to
- 10:31Speaker 2: get a real test this week against Jacoby Dixon, the
- 10:33Speaker 2: superstar sophomore running back for Brenham. They've got a fantastic
- 10:37Speaker 2: quarterback as well. I'm really interested to see. Basically, I
- 10:41Speaker 2: think for Liberty Hill, can they dictate the terms of
- 10:44Speaker 2: engagement here, go on those long sustained drives and keep
- 10:47Speaker 2: the ball away from Brenham. This is an explosive Brenham
- 10:50Speaker 2: team and so I think a lot of this ultimate look.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Every Liberty Hill game comes down to the same thing,
- 10:55Speaker 2: which is can you diagnose and slow down the slot tea?
- 10:58Speaker 2: If you can, you got a great chance to and
- 11:00Speaker 2: if you don't, then you're gonna look silly by giving
- 11:02Speaker 2: a five hundred yards rushing like that's the that's the
- 11:05Speaker 2: name of the ball game. And I'm fascinated to see
- 11:07Speaker 2: it play out. Two great coaches and Danny Young's and
- 11:10Speaker 2: Kent Walker and a spot playing for Thanksgiving on the line.
- 11:13Speaker 2: It's gonna be a lot of fun, and I think
- 11:15Speaker 2: there's an opportunity that it gets it gets a little
- 11:17Speaker 2: point c because I think both these offenses are playing
- 11:20Speaker 2: at an extremely high level. I think we're I think we're
- 11:22Speaker 2: in for a really good one on Friday.
- 11:24Speaker 1: All right, And finally I was going to get to it,
- 11:26Speaker 1: and you brought it up anyway, So I'm glad. And
- 11:28Speaker 1: that's three a D one Region three where you got Palestine, Westwood, Columbus, Fairfield, Yoakum, Franklin,
- 11:36Speaker 1: die Ball, and Hitchcock Tigue where I just see Hitchcock
- 11:40Speaker 1: and Franklin and obviously the winner of this Westwood Columbus
- 11:42Speaker 1: gang being the main players here.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Absolutely, Yeah, Hitchcock's a little bit banged up. We don't
- 11:48Speaker 2: know what the status of a number of their players are.
- 11:50Speaker 2: That's a big question this one. Franklin, I think the
- 11:53Speaker 2: quietest four time four constsutive state focalists in America has
- 11:58Speaker 2: just kind of been rolling along. But they The game
- 12:00Speaker 2: that's going to catch everybody's attention this week is Palestine
- 12:02Speaker 2: Westwood and Columbus. Matt step on our podcast this week
- 12:06Speaker 2: said that he thinks it's the best quarterback matchup in
- 12:08Speaker 2: the state this week, and I'm kind of inclined to
- 12:10Speaker 2: agree with him. Kavian Bryant, if you have not seen him,
- 12:13Speaker 2: the unbelievable sophomore for Palistine Westwood. He is terrific going
- 12:16Speaker 2: up against Adam Shobel, the TCU commit who has been
- 12:19Speaker 2: so good for them. I think it's going to be
- 12:21Speaker 2: a high scoring affair in that one. And yeah, I
- 12:24Speaker 2: think that the winner of that game probably has a
- 12:26Speaker 2: date down the road with Franklin, and that's going to
- 12:29Speaker 2: be really really interesting because it's the Franklin team that again,
- 12:32Speaker 2: I think flying under the radar, which is not something
- 12:35Speaker 2: Mark Fanns team has done in the past couple of years,
- 12:37Speaker 2: but they've got an opportunity to make it five consecutive
- 12:40Speaker 2: trips to AT and T Stadium.
- 12:42Speaker 1: He's Greg Temper, managing editor at Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine,
- 12:45Speaker 1: co host along with Aaron Hartigan and whenever I can
- 12:48Speaker 1: get back.
- 12:48Speaker 3: In the studio with him, they're on the.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Scoreboard Live and you'll be on the call with Gary
- 12:52Speaker 1: Reasons Friday night. There you'll see it on your local
- 12:55Speaker 1: fan duel outlet. There to see that matchup between lib
- 13:00Speaker 1: Hill YEP playing back on television again and Brenham.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Hey, I appreciate the time, enjoy that this week.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I'm excited, pyl All right.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Take care.
- 13:09Speaker 1: That's Greg Tepper managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Well,
- 13:14Speaker 1: I'm more coming up on sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 13:16Speaker 1: the Zone,
