- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, I've got to tell you I was a bit disappointed.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Earlier in the week.
- 0:03Speaker 2: I was certainly hoping that my next guest was going
- 0:06Speaker 2: to be the Minister for Northern Australia. He joins me
- 0:08Speaker 2: in the studio right now, it is Luke Gosling, the
- 0:11Speaker 2: Member for Solomon.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Good morning to you, Luke.
- 0:13Speaker 3: How are you Katie?
- 0:14Speaker 1: Oh mate?
- 0:14Speaker 2: I was waiting for it to come out, and I
- 0:16Speaker 2: was like, please let him be the Minister for Northern Australia.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Yeah, you weren't the only one hoping that.
- 0:23Speaker 1: All in good time? Were you disappointed?
- 0:29Speaker 3: I certainly, naturally. I suppose it's a you know, it's
- 0:32Speaker 3: a group of people who want to be part of
- 0:35Speaker 3: the leadership of the nation, and you know, there's a
- 0:37Speaker 3: lot of high quality people and a lot of a
- 0:42Speaker 3: lot of ambition. But it's kind of one of the
- 0:45Speaker 3: things that we always struggle with from the territory is numbers.
- 0:50Speaker 3: You know, politics is at numbers game, as you know,
- 0:53Speaker 3: so some of the other states obviously had a bit
- 0:57Speaker 3: more pool. But having said that, I was really encouraged
- 1:01Speaker 3: by the conversations I have with people about the future,
- 1:05Speaker 3: Like I'm really clear on that that there is a
- 1:09Speaker 3: future in the ministry for me, and as time goes
- 1:13Speaker 3: on that very may well occur. But in the meantime
- 1:19Speaker 3: it's just such a big job taking over government getting
- 1:22Speaker 3: sorted out in the portfolio area. So I'll just be
- 1:26Speaker 3: assisting those that are in like Madeline King who's in
- 1:30Speaker 3: that role, and also Matt Keo, both from WA in
- 1:35Speaker 3: that role, and I'll be working closely with them.
- 1:37Speaker 1: She's based in Rockingham.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I mean a lot of our listeners asking during the week,
- 1:41Speaker 2: how can you be the Minister for Northern Australia when
- 1:43Speaker 2: you're in Rockingham.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Well, I think you know, obviously Northern Western Australia is
- 1:50Speaker 3: in Northern Australia.
- 1:54Speaker 1: As in Kunara, not Rockingham.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, the Pilburgh and the Kimberley and it's all
- 2:00Speaker 3: all only a flight of a flight away. One thing
- 2:03Speaker 3: I do know about Madeline is that she does get
- 2:07Speaker 3: Northern Australia as it pertains to Western Australia, and I've
- 2:12Speaker 3: been speaking with her just this morning. What I'm really
- 2:15Speaker 3: happy about is that Northern Australia has gone into cabinet,
- 2:19Speaker 3: so it is around the table where the big decisions
- 2:23Speaker 3: are made, So she'll be a well, I'll ensure that
- 2:26Speaker 3: she's a good voice for the Northern Territory. I mean,
- 2:29Speaker 3: that's obviously what my job is and what I'm passionate about.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Just because I'm not in that room doesn't mean that
- 2:36Speaker 3: i can't make sure that our interests looked after.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Any word on when she's going to have her first
- 2:43Speaker 2: trip as the Minister for Northern Australia to the Northern Territory.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Now she's looking at her diary right now, she's reading
- 2:49Speaker 3: the briefs that come from the Department about the KNAFE
- 2:52Speaker 3: and where that's at and what it has done and
- 2:54Speaker 3: hasn't done. I've flagged with her that I've supported various
- 2:58Speaker 3: territory businesses in grants that they've got in the North
- 3:02Speaker 3: Australia program. And we've spoken about that this morning. So
- 3:07Speaker 3: it won't be long and she'll be up here because
- 3:09Speaker 3: of course she's also resources, so in many ways, North
- 3:13Speaker 3: Australian resources go together. You know, I'm really keen to
- 3:19Speaker 3: see her and Chris Bowen what they can do in
- 3:21Speaker 3: the energy space. We know that energies are incredibly important,
- 3:25Speaker 3: Solar and our opportunities they are incredibly important to me,
- 3:29Speaker 3: and yeah, just look forward to her first visit.
- 3:32Speaker 2: And were speaking a little bit earlier this morning about
- 3:34Speaker 2: the gas crisis that the rest of Australia is experiencing
- 3:37Speaker 2: at the moment, and you know, the Beaterloo and the
- 3:40Speaker 2: prospects that we've got there. We know that there are
- 3:42Speaker 2: still obviously a lot of different you know, a lot
- 3:45Speaker 2: of different hoops that need to be jumped through before
- 3:47Speaker 2: we get to the point where we.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Are exporting our gas.
- 3:50Speaker 2: But how important do you think that that is going
- 3:52Speaker 2: to be in that portfolio that she's taken on as well.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Yeah, it'll be very important to work all that through,
- 3:59Speaker 3: and she were talking to people on the East Coast
- 4:02Speaker 3: at the moment about the challenges there. But also what's
- 4:07Speaker 3: really important is that there's social license, social support for
- 4:14Speaker 3: the development of different projects, including the Beaterloo, And yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 3: I've had a conversation about that with her this morning
- 4:24Speaker 3: because there's a bit of work to do. There's going
- 4:27Speaker 3: to be a lot of investment needed because wherever the
- 4:31Speaker 3: energy is coming from, whether it's solar gas or what
- 4:34Speaker 3: have you, we need that enabling infrastructure to get that
- 4:38Speaker 3: to market. And the other thing is I spoke with
- 4:40Speaker 3: her about the fact that WA has got a.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Has got that.
- 4:46Speaker 3: What's it called when they keep some of their own
- 4:48Speaker 3: the resources.
- 4:49Speaker 1: We did talk about that a bit earlier this morning.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Actually, guess the reserve is that I can't remember exactly
- 4:54Speaker 2: what it's called, but Tom Morgan was talking about it,
- 4:57Speaker 2: and I think that that's a really good idea and
- 4:59Speaker 2: something that we obviously need to look at doing for
- 5:01Speaker 2: the territory.
- 5:02Speaker 1: So that's obviously on your agenda.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what we spoke about this morning. WA's had
- 5:07Speaker 3: that reserve in place for some time for the territory.
- 5:13Speaker 3: That needs to be part of a discussion like it
- 5:16Speaker 3: is with some cable. You know, is power going to
- 5:20Speaker 3: Singapore viron undersea cable, but Darwin and Parmesan and our
- 5:25Speaker 3: grid is going to get some of that on the
- 5:27Speaker 3: way through. If there are more developments of gas resources,
- 5:32Speaker 3: what does that mean for our industry here as well?
- 5:34Speaker 2: It seems only right I think when you're talking about
- 5:36Speaker 2: our resources that we do keep some of that to
- 5:39Speaker 2: help territorians. Now, Luke, I want to ask, because we
- 5:42Speaker 2: had quite a few messages from listeners throughout the week
- 5:45Speaker 2: really concerned that with the you know, with the portfolio
- 5:49Speaker 2: sort of structuring that Veterans Affairs had fallen out of
- 5:54Speaker 2: the inner ministry.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Is that correct?
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yeah, previously to the previous government it was, and it
- 6:03Speaker 3: seemed to be as a result of where the Nationals'
- 6:09Speaker 3: leadership changes went is where Veterans Affairs were sent. I
- 6:13Speaker 3: think they had six or seven Veterans Affairs ministers and
- 6:16Speaker 3: because of the National leadership Nationals Party leadership changes, it
- 6:22Speaker 3: got into cabinet and I thought that was a really
- 6:25Speaker 3: good thing because like Northern Australia now being in cabinet,
- 6:29Speaker 3: it's great a profile and there's a lot to be
- 6:32Speaker 3: done in the veterans space as well, and you want
- 6:35Speaker 3: to make sure that veterans' interests are absolutely paramount. So
- 6:41Speaker 3: Matt Keo from Western Australia as well has picked up
- 6:44Speaker 3: that defense personnel and veterans and there's a really good
- 6:48Speaker 3: guy called matthis Ulthwaite from Sydney that's supporting him as well,
- 6:51Speaker 3: very experienced parliamentary that I know is very passionate about veterans.
- 6:55Speaker 3: So I'm just going to see how they go. I
- 6:58Speaker 3: know Shane Human, who was former Veterans spokesperson from the
- 7:03Speaker 3: labor side of myself, will be giving those two as
- 7:06Speaker 3: much support as we possibly can, and there's a Royal
- 7:10Speaker 3: Commission on Just in this last couple of weeks, we've
- 7:13Speaker 3: had a defense suicide, We've had a veteran suicide right
- 7:18Speaker 3: here in Darwin. These are real issues that need to
- 7:21Speaker 3: be dealt with, which is why I pushed so hard
- 7:24Speaker 3: for that Royal Commission. So we need to see that
- 7:27Speaker 3: Royal Commission work through. But the work can't wait until
- 7:30Speaker 3: the recommendations of the Royal Commission because this is something
- 7:33Speaker 3: that's impacting our people right now. But I must say,
- 7:35Speaker 3: as I always do, Cadie, the overwhelming majority of veterans
- 7:39Speaker 3: get out and are just full of experience and skills
- 7:42Speaker 3: and just want to get into work. And I just
- 7:44Speaker 3: say to all the employers out there, get them on board,
- 7:47Speaker 3: and I'll be doing everything I can to make sure
- 7:49Speaker 3: that there's those opportunities.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I've got a message here from Ian Ingray and it says, Hi, Katie,
- 7:54Speaker 2: as a veteran, can you ask Luke Gosling his thoughts
- 7:56Speaker 2: on the Labor Government's removal of the Vet Affairs portfolio
- 7:59Speaker 2: from the and how it's going to affect services to
- 8:02Speaker 2: defense and the veteran community.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Do you think that it's going to have any impact now.
- 8:07Speaker 3: I think, well, I know that Albo cares deeply about
- 8:11Speaker 3: veterans and that's why I with him called for the
- 8:16Speaker 3: Royal Commission force the Morrison government to call the Royal Commission. Look,
- 8:22Speaker 3: I'm going to I'm going to Perth tomorrow. I'm going
- 8:26Speaker 3: to meet with Madeline King and meet with Matt Keo.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I'm going with the Prime Minister to Indonesia and when
- 8:33Speaker 3: we come back, we'll come back through Darwin and the
- 8:36Speaker 3: will be an opportunity for the community to meet our
- 8:39Speaker 3: new Prime minister. It's really exciting. So I don't want to,
- 8:43Speaker 3: I guess, judge this movement before time. But one thing
- 8:48Speaker 3: I will absolutely do is make sure it doesn't matter
- 8:53Speaker 3: that I haven't been promoted into the ministry at this
- 8:56Speaker 3: point because there will be an opportunity in the future.
- 8:58Speaker 3: But I'll be fighting every day for Territorians, and my
- 9:02Speaker 3: colleagues who have been promoted into the ministry know that
- 9:05Speaker 3: if I'm asking them to consider something, they're going to
- 9:09Speaker 3: be listening to me.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Well look, there's lots of messages coming through, but there's
- 9:11Speaker 2: one here that says, don't worry Luke, just keep doing
- 9:14Speaker 2: what you're doing.
- 9:14Speaker 1: It's only a matter of time before elbow.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Works out at Rockingham is at the bottom, not at
- 9:21Speaker 2: the top. Your day will come, brother says that text message.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Look, I've really appreciated all the messages of support from people,
- 9:30Speaker 3: but we can't also forget the fact that I've had
- 9:34Speaker 3: a massive show of support from people in Darwen and
- 9:37Speaker 3: Palmerston and we're in government so we can deliver and
- 9:41Speaker 3: I'll be making sure we do well.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Luke Gosling, it is always good to catch up with you.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Thank you very much for your time. We'll talk to
- 9:46Speaker 2: you again. I'll be very keen to get an update
- 9:48Speaker 2: after you've been to Perth and met with the Minister
- 9:50Speaker 2: for Northern Australia. But make sure you let her know
- 9:52Speaker 2: she's gonna have to come on here and have a
- 9:53Speaker 2: chat to us as well.
- 9:54Speaker 1: She will good stuff. Good on you, Luke. Thank you
