Transcript
- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've.
- 0:11Preached. But to go beyond the sermon and
- 0:13talk about what we're learning and what God is doing in US and
- 0:16in our community. You can find more information
- 0:19about our church at fumccollingswood.org.
- 0:22Thanks for listening. Our Scripture reading this
- 0:27morning comes to us from the book of Exodus chapter 3,
- 0:33beginning in verse one. It's Exodus 3 beginning in verse
- 0:38one here, the Word of God this morning.
- 0:42Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law,
- 0:46the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the
- 0:50wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.
- 0:53Then the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of
- 0:56fire from within a Bush. Moses saw that though the Bush
- 1:01was on fire, it did not burn up. So Moses thought, I will go over
- 1:07and see this strange sight, why the Bush does not burn up.
- 1:12When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, Moses called
- 1:15to him from within the Bush. Moses, Moses and Moses said,
- 1:21Here I am, do not come any closer.
- 1:25God said, take off your sandals for the place where you are
- 1:28standing his holy ground. Then he said, I am the God of
- 1:32your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of
- 1:35Jacob. At this Moses hid his face
- 1:38because he was afraid to look at God.
- 1:41The Lord said, I have indeed seen the misery of my people in
- 1:45Egypt. I have heard them crying out
- 1:47because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their
- 1:51suffering. So I've come down to rescue them
- 1:54from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that
- 1:57land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk
- 2:01and honey, the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites,
- 2:04Amorites, parasites, Hivites and Jebusites.
- 2:08And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and
- 2:11I've seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them.
- 2:14So now go, I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the
- 2:18Israelites out of Egypt. But Moses said to God, Who am I
- 2:23that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of
- 2:26Egypt? And God said, I will be with
- 2:29you, and this will be the sign to you, that it is I who have
- 2:33sent you. When you have brought the people
- 2:34of Egypt, brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God
- 2:38on this mountain. Moses said to God, Suppose I go
- 2:42to the Israelites and say to them, the God of your Father's
- 2:45has sent me to you. And they asked me, what is his
- 2:47name? Then what shall I tell them?
- 2:50God said to Moses, I am who I am.
- 2:55This is what you were to say to the Israelites.
- 2:57I am has sent me to you. This is the word of God for the
- 3:02people of God. Thanks be to God.
- 3:05Good morning everyone. I am so excited to be in God's
- 3:11house this morning with you all. And this sermon might be a
- 3:16little unique in a couple aspects.
- 3:18I'm going to give you those warnings now.
- 3:22First off, I may pray more than shortly and the closing one, but
- 3:27I will let you know when the closing prayer is happening.
- 3:30And I also want the altar to be open to you at all times, even
- 3:37during the sermon. If God is speaking to you and
- 3:40meeting you in this time, that's far more important than
- 3:45listening to me. My wife is saying she doesn't
- 3:48want to hear me. So if you could turn that down a
- 3:50little bit more, we'd appreciate it.
- 3:53And so I just wanted that to be open and available to you.
- 3:57This morning I was given free rein, which is dangerous in this
- 4:02sermon theories as we're talking about hearing from the Lord.
- 4:07And I wanted to focus in today about how to hear God's voice.
- 4:13And so for those that are fans of my sermons, due to their
- 4:17brevity and being much shorter than Scots, I can sum up this
- 4:21whole sermon with one word, which is listen.
- 4:27And so that's what we're going to do in this time.
- 4:29Let's go to the Lord in prayer. Lord, we thank you so much for
- 4:39the opportunity to come before you in Your house, to be amongst
- 4:43your children, to hear your word that You have provided, Lord,
- 4:49that you would put me aside and that you would speak, that Your
- 4:54spirit would speak to your people.
- 4:56Lord, that we would listen the best that we know how.
- 5:01Lord, even in this time, Amen. And so we have quite the journey
- 5:20to go on. But before we can talk about how
- 5:25to hear God's voice, some people made me asking why would I
- 5:32listen for God's voice if I'm not sure that that's even
- 5:36possible nowadays? And so to that I would say, of
- 5:41course we can. Jesus said so.
- 5:43And if you don't believe me, during a back and forth with the
- 5:47Pharisees in John chapter 8 verse 47, Jesus says this.
- 5:53Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.
- 5:58The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.
- 6:05We want to belong to God, right? We do not want to associate with
- 6:09the Pharisees. I don't know of any stories in
- 6:11the Scriptures where we think, I wish I was more like the
- 6:14Pharisees, right? But you may be sitting there
- 6:18thinking, well, pastor, I know I belong to God, but I don't think
- 6:23I've ever heard his voice. My question to you lovingly and
- 6:32respectfully would be, do you want to hear God's voice?
- 6:39And that may seem far fetched, that may seem ridiculous.
- 6:44And I'm sure everyone would say, yes, that would be great to hear
- 6:47God's voice. Why would I not want to hear
- 6:50God's voice? And yet sometimes it's more of a
- 6:56God knows where to find me. If he wants to tell me
- 6:59something, he'll crack the sky open.
- 7:01A deep voice will come in and tell me exactly what I need to
- 7:05hear, right? And then I will listen to
- 7:09whatever he has to say. And it can be more of a passive
- 7:13way that we would like to hear from God.
- 7:18But are we actively seeking to listen for God's voice?
- 7:24And you may be thinking, well, I don't have time to just sit
- 7:27around in the quiet and listen for God.
- 7:29I have things to do, and since I don't think I've heard from God
- 7:33before, why would I waste my time listening for something I
- 7:38haven't experienced before? We talked a lot this morning and
- 7:42Sunday school in the discussion group about experiencing God and
- 7:47experiencing communication with Him through prayer.
- 7:52And if that is the case, may I argue that your individual
- 7:57experience up to this moment is not above Scripture, nor the
- 8:04experience of Christians over the past 2000 years?
- 8:08And that's why, before we even talk about how to hear God's
- 8:12voice, we need to wrestle with the question of can we hear
- 8:17God's voice? And do we even want to hear
- 8:21God's voice? A great quote that our college
- 8:26kids heard at the Passion Conference in Dallas just a
- 8:29couple weeks ago originally came from Louis Giglio and then was
- 8:34quoted once again by John Tyson. Was this.
- 8:38The value of an object is measured by the intensity of the
- 8:44pursuit to obtain it. I'll repeat that the value of an
- 8:50object is measured by the intensity of the pursuit to
- 8:55obtain it. And when reflecting on intense
- 8:59pursuits of God, I was brought back to Solomon, who, when
- 9:03offered anything he wanted from God, asked for wisdom, and in
- 9:09addition to that, God provided him wealth and honor.
- 9:17But after a while, Solomon was more focused on the blessings
- 9:22than the God that had blessed him, and I think that can be the
- 9:27case for all of us at times. Focus more on the things we can
- 9:32buy with the money God has provided us.
- 9:35Focused on the blessing that is our girlfriend, boyfriend,
- 9:39spouse, children, grandchildren. Our focus can shift far past
- 9:45being good stewards of what God has provided us and making those
- 9:51blessings idols in our lives. I hope that instead we would
- 9:57have an intense pursuit after the presence of God, just like
- 10:02David in Psalm 27 four, which reads, one thing I asked from
- 10:08the Lord, this only do I seek that I may dwell in the House of
- 10:14the Lord all the days of my life to gaze on the beauty of the
- 10:20Lord and to seek Him in his temple.
- 10:26It's hard to listen to someone without being in their presence.
- 10:32How am I supposed to listen to my hippie cousin that is in the
- 10:36mountains of California if I am not with him face to face
- 10:41talking with him? And you may be thinking to
- 10:44yourself that, well, there's something called cell phones,
- 10:48right? There's a way to communicate
- 10:51with someone even if you're not with them face to face, right?
- 10:55Or if you're a little more old fashioned, you can write letters
- 10:59and see what they have written for you.
- 11:03Now, sadly, my cousin being the mountain man that he is, even if
- 11:07I text or call him, I may not hear from him for multiple weeks
- 11:11or multiple months at a time. But just because I do not hear
- 11:16from my cousin doesn't mean that I believe that he's stopped
- 11:20speaking or stop being capable of speaking with me.
- 11:26And so at this moment, I want us to come together again in a word
- 11:32of prayer as we check our hearts on the intensity of our pursuit
- 11:37to hear God's voice. Would you join me?
- 11:44Lord, we rejoice in who you are and the blessings you provided.
- 11:53Again, we've rejoice the blessings that we could do a
- 11:58testimony service for weeks of all the things You have provided
- 12:01each and everyone of us. Lord, would you make clear to us
- 12:08if we have put anything that you have provided above you?
- 12:19Would your spirit make a fresh the heart knowledge that you are
- 12:28the provider of all good gifts and all good gifts come from
- 12:34you? Would we share the heart of
- 12:39David in that Psalm that the only thing we seek is to be in
- 12:46your presence all the days of our lives in Jesus name, Amen.
- 12:58Once we believe we can hear God's word, God's voice, and we
- 13:03desire it, how do we do it? What is the secret formula to
- 13:10make that happen? Well, if we try to copy the
- 13:14circumstances in scripture, then it would make sense to find a
- 13:20Bush. Oh, I forgot a lighter.
- 13:22I don't see Tina and we go, we have a a plethora of bushes out
- 13:28front and if we get a burning Bush we should then hear from
- 13:34God, right? Do we have any trustees against
- 13:37this plan going once going Ken is against it.
- 13:41OK, well now I have to pivot. OK, so that is not the case.
- 13:48We may be chuckling at even just the idea of setting a Bush on
- 13:53fire outside of the church. Don't worry, the can is empty.
- 13:56I checked. And yet there can be a deep
- 14:00desire for it to be that simple or that easy.
- 14:05If I fold my hands the right way or say the right words in the
- 14:11perfect sentence or paragraph, I'm guaranteed to hear from God.
- 14:17But if we look back at the Old Testament, God speaks in a
- 14:21variety of ways. He speaks through angels,
- 14:27visions, dreams, just in Genesis alone.
- 14:31He speaks through a gentle whisper, miraculous signs,
- 14:36through the prophets, through symbolic actions.
- 14:41What's important is not the specific way that God speaks.
- 14:47It's more important that God speaks the creator of the
- 14:52universe speaks to his people and you may be thinking well
- 14:59that's Old Testament. We're Christians so we need to
- 15:02focus on the New Testament or may think some of those that are
- 15:09well read that maybe I would be staying away from Hebrews
- 15:13chapter 1 because some people that argue that we can no longer
- 15:17hear from God today would point us to Hebrews chapter 1 which
- 15:22connects the Old and New Testament and how God speaks.
- 15:24It says in the past God spoke to our ancestors through the
- 15:28prophets at many times and in various ways.
- 15:32But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He
- 15:37appointed heir of all things, and through whom also He made
- 15:42the universe. In the last days God spoke to us
- 15:47by His Son. So does that mean that the red
- 15:51letters are the last time that God spoke to His people?
- 15:56No, and if you don't believe me, let's go back to Jesus.
- 16:00He knows better than me. And that is how God spoke to His
- 16:03people according to Hebrews 2. So if we jump to John chapter
- 16:0716, starting in verse 12, this is what Jesus says.
- 16:12I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
- 16:18But when He, the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into
- 16:23all the truth. He will not speak on His own.
- 16:26He will speak only what He hears and what He will tell you.
- 16:30What is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is
- 16:35from Me that you will receive what He will make known to you.
- 16:40All that belongs to the Father is mine.
- 16:43That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what He
- 16:48will make known to you. What belongs to the Father is
- 16:53mine, and the Spirit receives from me what He will make known
- 16:57to you. The entire Trinity is involved
- 17:02here when it comes to God communicating to us.
- 17:07So we should be reassured that God does speak to his people in
- 17:10the Old Testament, the New Testament, and today.
- 17:16We know that there is no direct formula to force God to tell us
- 17:20something. And you were supposed to tell us
- 17:24how to hear God's voice. Jeremy, I know, I know.
- 17:29What I'd like us to look at are maybe some common themes about
- 17:34when God speaks in Scripture. Number one is they usually knew
- 17:41that it was God speaking and what he was saying.
- 17:46I wrestled with this point in reflecting on my own personal
- 17:50experiences. When I have heard from God, I
- 17:56kept thinking, yeah, I've questioned if it's God or my own
- 17:58thoughts and going back and forth.
- 18:01But depending on the situation, I have found that there are two
- 18:06things that I I was actually wrestling with within myself.
- 18:11That wasn't the question of is it God speaking or my own
- 18:14thoughts. One of the first things I
- 18:17normally would question is am I worthy or capable of doing what
- 18:21God has called me to do? And that's something that we see
- 18:26Moses also wrestling with in chapter 4 in the same
- 18:31conversation he's having with God where he says, pardon your
- 18:35servant, Lord, I have never been eloquent neither in the past nor
- 18:40since You have spoken to your servant.
- 18:42I am slow of speech and tongue. The Lord said to him who gave
- 18:48human beings their mouths. We get so self-conscious we
- 18:53forget who God is and what He's capable of.
- 18:58And the other times when I feel like I hear God calling me to
- 19:02say or do something, I want Him to show me what fruit will come
- 19:07from it so that I can balance in my mind if it is worth the
- 19:12hardships or potential embarrassment that would affect
- 19:16me. In regards to the fruit that
- 19:20will come from being faithful to what He has called me to say or
- 19:24do #1 if you remember, they usually knew that it was God
- 19:30speaking and what He was saying #2 God spoke uniquely to the
- 19:35individual, right? We have fires, we have donkeys,
- 19:41we have plethora of avenues. For me, I find that God needs to
- 19:47pester me in the best way possible.
- 19:51He won't let something escape my mind.
- 19:54He'll bring it back to my memory, which is very hard to do
- 19:57with my memory. And it's especially hard if it's
- 20:01something I don't desire myself. If it's not something I'm
- 20:04seeking after, it's not usually running through my mind with all
- 20:08of the things that I'm juggling and #3 hearing God's voice is
- 20:14the experience. Sometimes we may seek to
- 20:18experience God at work and see Him do something great.
- 20:23And think that, well, if we heard from God, then we do the
- 20:26thing and then we get to see God at work.
- 20:29But it would be really odd for Moses to leave that time with
- 20:34the burning Bush and be like, well, now that that Bush is
- 20:37done, let's see what God's going to do, right?
- 20:40Having God speak to us here and now is God at work.
- 20:47It should be sufficient in itself.
- 20:50It should spur on faith, hope, and a deeper loving relationship
- 20:55with Him. And so by what means do people
- 20:59typically hear God's voice? I believe I have four of the
- 21:04main ones. Excuse me #1 is Scripture.
- 21:11I want to quote some of our our best theologians of the day
- 21:16since God always gets to quote people.
- 21:19Bethany Alexander is one of our youth and during a small group
- 21:25discussion when we were talking about reading God's Word and how
- 21:31he speaks to us depending on the situation that we are in, the
- 21:36way she described is like as she's reading Scripture, that
- 21:39God through the Holy Spirit would highlight a phrase for her
- 21:44and it would be more profound and sinking and stand out to her
- 21:49even if she was familiar with the Scripture.
- 21:52And for me, that just clicked with my experience that I've had
- 21:55where even if it's familiar and you're going it over the same
- 21:58time that it just feels like in your mind, it's just being
- 22:02highlighted and popping off of the pages.
- 22:06But sometimes the, the, the Scripture doesn't speak to
- 22:12everyone at the same time in the same way, right?
- 22:15It's the living Word, and at different times it speaks to
- 22:18different people. And so if you remember, I don't
- 22:24know how many months back last year, I preached A sermon
- 22:27revolving around Romans, chapters 6-7 and eight.
- 22:31And just a month or so ago, Lillian Schwim came up to me and
- 22:37said, hey, Jeremy Wise, favorite teacher, favorite Jeremy,
- 22:42something along those lines. She said, next time you preach,
- 22:48can you preach on Romans chapter 6-7 and eight?
- 22:52And at first I thought she was kidding.
- 22:54And I was like, you know, that was like only two sermons ago.
- 22:58I preached on that. And we ended up looking up the
- 23:00YouTube video, and she's on the thumbnail for the video that she
- 23:03was playing in the band that day.
- 23:06And yet as she's in the Word, God is speaking to her through
- 23:11that and what leading her to dive deeper into it.
- 23:14And so how God is able to reveal himself and speak through His
- 23:19word at different times to different people, I think that
- 23:22is what we should seek in His word instead of nitpicking
- 23:26scriptures that we want to fit into our specific circumstance
- 23:31or situation. So first is scripture.
- 23:34Secondly, prayer. Not that God would adjust to our
- 23:39desires, but it would be a time for us to adjust to his desires
- 23:44for us and the world around us. And listening should be a key
- 23:50part of that time together with the Lord.
- 23:54Thirdly, through circumstances and this one, I'm just going to
- 24:00throw up some red flags as we try to navigate these waters
- 24:05together because I believe circumstances is one that a lot
- 24:09of people like because they always have circumstances
- 24:13happening to them, whether they're in the word, whether
- 24:16they're praying regularly, circumstances are happening
- 24:19around them and they don't feel like they have to be intentional
- 24:22about it. They just have to figure out if
- 24:25it's of God and and what it could possibly mean.
- 24:28They have to translate the circumstances around them.
- 24:32But one of the things I want to make clear is that just because
- 24:38something feels good doesn't mean that it's necessarily
- 24:42always from God. And if something feels bad, it's
- 24:47not always of the devil. I think we can associate those
- 24:53things separately. And I'll, I'll, I'll give
- 24:55examples because the devil can make you feel good.
- 24:57If you won the recent Powerball for like $1.4 billion, you're
- 25:02not going to be sad and mope around after reading those
- 25:05numbers like, oh, I want to move a billion dollars, right?
- 25:08That's not going to be the reaction.
- 25:09But the life you live afterwards could be much more focused on
- 25:14the distraction of what that wealth can provide you in this
- 25:17lifetime, rather than point you into deeper relationship with
- 25:22God. And to the contrary, when
- 25:26something doesn't feel great in the moment, it doesn't mean that
- 25:30God can't be pruning those that are fruitful servants, that He
- 25:35couldn't be disciplining his children that He loves so
- 25:39dearly. And so do not translate what
- 25:42happens to you without God and that conversation.
- 25:48Ask for clarity. Seek clarity for the situations
- 25:52around you from God. And sometimes the what happens
- 25:57around us is the consequences of our sins or others.
- 26:01And through it all, God is able to do good out of it all.
- 26:06But the roots of it we can't assume unless he makes it clear
- 26:10to us. And lastly #4 I believe the
- 26:14church, when we were at Passion Conference, we got back from one
- 26:20of the sessions and we have little family meetings in the
- 26:22Airbnb with all of our college students.
- 26:25And Rebecca went on this long rant, as you all know she does,
- 26:31And she went on this rant about how the last speaker was not her
- 26:34favorite. She understood where he was
- 26:36going. She liked the scripture that he
- 26:38was using, but just didn't really connect with it at all.
- 26:42And shortly thereafter, four of our college students said that
- 26:45was the best one we've had so far.
- 26:48God spoke in so many ways to me and I was taking notes left and
- 26:51right. And so God is able to speak
- 26:56through His church when we gather as His body.
- 27:00But again, we shouldn't get hung up on those on the stage, right?
- 27:06We can feel so connected when Pastor Scott is preaching in Oh
- 27:10man, I always hear God speak through Pastor Scott or I look
- 27:15forward to this conference every year because God always speaks,
- 27:19but we shouldn't get locked in on how God does it, but that God
- 27:25is speaking. That can't be the only Ave. in
- 27:28which he is seeking to speak to you.
- 27:32God also speaks through other people filled with the Holy
- 27:35Spirit. That means those in the pews as
- 27:38well. And this also takes discernment.
- 27:42I think people and churches can get a little tricky and using
- 27:45the language that I've heard from God and they can use that
- 27:50to their own advantage. One that is mocked very often,
- 27:54especially in younger circles is God told me you're going to be
- 27:58my wife and if he hasn't told you yet, you should go and pray.
- 28:04I find that the sincerest ones usually don't personally benefit
- 28:09from the message they share from the Lord, and discerning this
- 28:13should always be done in contrast to scripture and time
- 28:17of prayer. I believe all of the things God
- 28:21wants to say to us within these four can be discovered if we
- 28:26share the desire of David's heart in Psalm 27 for yeah, I'll
- 28:35take this with me, Tim, you can pop up the the Scripture.
- 28:39I don't want to get too close to that right when we're reading
- 28:46this scripture, One thing I asked from the Lord this only do
- 28:51I seek that I may dwell in the House of the Lord all the days
- 28:55of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek
- 28:59him in his temple, right? We're talking about the old
- 29:03temple where everything is a no longer available to us, but we
- 29:09are now the temple for the Spirit to reside in US.
- 29:13And if you think of the old temple, it was designed by God
- 29:18to every single piece of it, everything inside the
- 29:22dimensions, everything designed by God to point people towards
- 29:27him and for him, for his glory. And I think that's also pertains
- 29:33to us as the temples of the Holy Spirit and yes, Aaron's going to
- 29:39start playing. So you know we're getting close
- 29:40to the end. You're welcome.
- 29:43And and as we sit in the Lord's house this morning, I'm at going
- 29:48to ask you to actually participate.
- 29:50I want you to point to something in this room that's purpose is
- 29:54to draw your attention to God. What is something I I get a
- 29:59unique view. I see the giant crosses stained
- 30:02glass in the back. We have cross, we have the
- 30:05stories throughout scripture and the gospels on the stained
- 30:08glasses around us, all the beautiful designs that have much
- 30:12more significance than maybe any of us in this room know a lot of
- 30:17history. We have plaques throughout
- 30:20reminding us of the Saints that have gone before us and how
- 30:23their lives glorified God. And we can't be in church all
- 30:28the time, right? We can't just set up shop and
- 30:30live here all the time and have this space to point us to God,
- 30:34and we can't be in the old temple.
- 30:37And so how do we intentionally seek to be in the Lord's
- 30:42presence? One way I find is in nature, in
- 30:48the way that God we know reveals himself to us through nature.
- 30:53I think of the Grand Canyon, one of my favorite spots.
- 30:58Not the first time I went. The first time I went, I
- 31:01complained the entire 3 hour drive from Phoenix saying, mom,
- 31:05it's just a big hole in the ground.
- 31:06Why are we going to go see a big hole in the ground?
- 31:09And then we got there. I look over the edge.
- 31:12I was right, it's a big hole in the ground.
- 31:13Can we go now? That was my first experience.
- 31:18And then later I had the honor to a hike in the Grand Canyon
- 31:22with a said hippie cousin that now lives in California.
- 31:26And getting to walk through the layers and see the grandness and
- 31:29think of how big our God is if this comprehensively large thing
- 31:36is so small in comparison to creation.
- 31:40And seeing the moonlight hit the water and the river, this
- 31:44rainbow circle around the sun, which I had to goop later to
- 31:48make sure I wasn't hallucinating.
- 31:50It's a real thing and all of this, which I think can even
- 31:54reflect our time in Scripture. Something so deep and profound
- 31:58that at times we may not appreciate what it is, but then
- 32:01God makes us aware of it at a later time.
- 32:06And I know that we can't just move our entire congregation to
- 32:10Arizona to be at the Grand Canyon all of the time, though
- 32:13I'm open to us looking into that.
- 32:16Anyone else? Anyone else?
- 32:18We got it. We can't leave Ben out there all
- 32:20alone as he prepares for college.
- 32:22And so we also can't just sit in nature all day every day, right?
- 32:28Most of us have to work. We need money, we need food on
- 32:31the tables, roofs over our heads.
- 32:33And I've been thinking a lot about as we enter the and Sunday
- 32:37school into a series called Pray Like Monks Live Like Fools.
- 32:43That monks, you would think that they just pray constantly and
- 32:48sit in quiet rooms or on mountaintops and pray.
- 32:51But they, a lot of them and many of the monastic orders had to
- 32:55create things and build things to sell in the marketplaces to
- 32:58afford their lifestyle. But during that time, as they
- 33:02were working with their hands, they were singing God's praises,
- 33:06they were quoting Scripture, they were praying.
- 33:09And I had the incredible opportunity thanks to Dick
- 33:13Escher. Where is he at?
- 33:15I can't think. There he is.
- 33:17Blessed me with the opportunity. For those that don't know, he's
- 33:20worked with stained glass before and he has a little workshop in
- 33:24his basement and I have some pieces of stained glass that are
- 33:29dear to my heart from my home church, Pitman UMC, that burned
- 33:33down when I was 7 years old. And we have pieces of the
- 33:36original stained glass and he's going to help me try and create
- 33:40something out of it. And the first step is cleaning
- 33:44the stained glass. And so I'm there in his basement
- 33:47and I'm, I'm literally cleaning the soot of the fire off of the
- 33:52stained glass of my home church. And I felt selfish in that
- 33:57moment. I was like, I could be home with
- 33:59my family. I could be prepping for the
- 34:01sermon that I'm giving right now.
- 34:03But here I am doing a little private project for myself.
- 34:09How could I turn this into time with God and being in His
- 34:12presence? And so I put on some worship
- 34:15music on my cell phone and just got in this rhythm of singing
- 34:18his praises and praying and talking to Him and asking him
- 34:22what he wanted to share this morning as I'm scrubbing off the
- 34:27SUT of a building that was designed to point people towards
- 34:32him and bring people closer to him.
- 34:34And yet he's still able to use that same stained glass to draw
- 34:38me closer to him and bring me into his presence.
- 34:43And so I, I would implore that any intentional time you, you
- 34:48focus your attention towards him can be a time in his presence.
- 34:55And lastly, if you feel like there's no space in the world
- 34:57that you can concentrate, noise cancelling headphones are really
- 35:00cheap nowadays and you know how to close your eyes.
- 35:03And so I would advise that anywhere, at any place, you can
- 35:07draw your full attention to the Lord.
- 35:11And I would just hope that our desire to be with Him would be
- 35:17above our desire for anything else that this world has to
- 35:20offer, even if the things we desire came from Him, that the
- 35:25blessings wouldn't take over our priorities and our desires to be
- 35:31with the one that blessed us. And so with that, I want us to
- 35:35all draw into his presence in a time of prayer.
- 35:40You're welcome to the altar. You're welcome to be stay in
- 35:43your seats and then we'll continue to dwell on him with a
- 35:47with a slight, slight song change.
- 35:50Remember, the bulletin is a suggestion, but I believe that
- 35:54the Lord is speaking and leading even in those changes.
- 35:57And so would you join me in a time in the presence of our
- 36:02Lord? Oh God, we thank you so much for
- 36:08this opportunity to be in your presence, the opportunity to sit
- 36:14and listen for whatever you want to say to your children.
- 36:24Would you speak now as we humbly come before your throne of
- 36:30grace? Would we create time and space
- 36:41that focuses our eyes on you amongst the chaos of life and
- 36:50things that we feel must get done and some must get done?
- 36:59Would we seek to walk with you all the days of our lives, to be
- 37:05in your presence, to listen for your voice, to align our desires
- 37:16with yours, whether it be in the gentle whisper, through a
- 37:26brother or sister in Christ or a burning Bush if you like?
- 37:32Would we always be open and seeking what you want to say to
- 37:38us in Jesus name, Amen.
