- 0:10Hey, listeners. This is Nick from scripture
- 0:12Central, and today's podcast addresses, the question.
- 0:16Why was Jesus proclaimed to be the Son of God at his baptism?
- 0:23When Jesus was baptized at the beginning of his ministry,
- 0:26several Divine manifestations, confirmed to all present that he
- 0:30was the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world.
- 0:34These very meaningful, manifestations included, the
- 0:36opening of the heavens, the Holy Ghost descending Upon Jesus and
- 0:41the voice of the father, speaking from Heaven, Mark and
- 0:44Luke. Quote, God is speaking directly
- 0:46to Jesus himself, and there came a voice from Heaven saying, Thou
- 0:50Art, my beloved Son, in whom I am.
- 0:52Well, pleased. Eased.
- 0:53Matthew recorded God's voice as being directed to the audience
- 0:56who witnessed Jesus baptism in any Royal investiture words were
- 1:02naturally addressed both to the one being elevated to the
- 1:05throne. And also to the people who would
- 1:07then honor that ruler as their divinely appointed leader.
- 1:10All three of these gospels commonly referred to as the
- 1:14synoptic gospels appear to be quoting or alluding to Psalm 2,
- 1:17which is often viewed as a prominent Royal Psalm associated
- 1:21with the coronation. Of ancient Israelite Kings.
- 1:24I will declare the decree. The Lord hath said unto me, thou
- 1:28art my son this day. I have begotten thee in the
- 1:33ancient near East. It was common for Kings to be
- 1:35referred to as the son of a deity and for them to go through
- 1:39a ritual initiation process to receive the power and authority
- 1:43to act in that God's name. In this respect, Kings were
- 1:47regarded as having Divine qualities, thus as Jasmine.
- 1:51Rapidly is noted to be To be a Son of God is at its core to
- 1:55inherit Divinity and assume a form of deity proclamation of
- 1:59Jesus. Sonship is tacit confirmation of
- 2:03his godhead. Matthew be brown, is observed
- 2:06that the initiation of the King was tied directly to the temple
- 2:09Precinct and involved. The king being admitted into the
- 2:12presence of God. It is significant that many
- 2:16elements of the Israelite Temple then appear in Jesus baptism
- 2:19when he initiated his ministry and the presence of Three
- 2:23members of the godhead became manifest, for example, the
- 2:26reception of a new name. Specifically the identity of the
- 2:30Son of God is coupled with the reception of washing and
- 2:34anointing ordinances. The washing right readily
- 2:37correlates with Jesus being immersed and therefore Washed by
- 2:40water at his baptism. As for the anointing, this
- 2:43occurred symbolically. When the Holy Ghost came in the
- 2:46form of a dove and rested Upon Jesus in the Old Testament.
- 2:50Isaiah specifically connected the Spirit with anointing and
- 2:54Peter, would later tie this concept even more directly to
- 2:57Jesus experienced in the Jordan, God anointed Jesus of Nazareth
- 3:02with the Holy Ghost. And with power, Joseph Smith,
- 3:05further connected, the sign of the dove at Jesus, baptism with
- 3:09the proper identification of angels, another Temple related
- 3:13theme finally, when Jesus came up out of the water at his
- 3:17baptism, it is noteworthy that the heavens were torn open.
- 3:20According to Mark chapter 1 This rending or parting of the
- 3:24Heavenly Veil. Jesus was admitted into the
- 3:26presence of two members of the godhead.
- 3:29He himself being the third member incarnate, his baptism,
- 3:33thus ultimately led to a type of divine confirmation or encounter
- 3:37much, like prophetic colleagues found in the Old Testament, the
- 3:41baptism of Jesus was the inauguration of Jesus ministry
- 3:45and salvific work Jesus is identity as God's only begotten,
- 3:49son was confirmed in a dramatic manner.
- 3:52As the veil Between Heaven and Earth was rent and the presence
- 3:56of all three members of the godhead became manifest, such a
- 4:00Monumental experience, sets, a precedent for each of us to
- 4:03follow as Nephi expressed near the end of his life.
- 4:07And now if the Lamb of God, he being holy should have need to
- 4:11be baptized by water to fulfill all righteousness.
- 4:14Oh then how much more need have we being Unholy to be baptized?
- 4:19Yeah, even by water. Elder, Bruce are mcconkie taught
- 4:23to fulfill. All righteousness is to perform
- 4:26every ordinance. Keep every commandment and do
- 4:29Every Act necessary to the attainment of eternal life.
- 4:33These ordinances Commandments and acts include those performed
- 4:37in the Holy Temple, which are prefigured by the ordinance of
- 4:40baptism by making covenants with the Lord.
- 4:43We too can take upon us. The name of the son of God, and
- 4:47follow the path. Jesus said regarding our own
- 4:50Journeys on this Covenant. Jasmine rapidly has observed.
- 4:53Jesus Christ. Promises his followers that
- 4:56those who repent of their sins and embrace.
- 4:59The gospel will have joint access to Jesus identity as a
- 5:03son. In other words, by following the
- 5:06example, that Jesus said, all individuals can eventually
- 5:09approach the Lord and be admitted into his presence as
- 5:12Covenant, o Sons and Daughters of God.
