- 0:00Speaker 1: On a dark day for the NBA, two legends step
- 0:02Speaker 1: up with good stories. It's one more thing I'm strong
- 0:06Speaker 1: and Getty, one more thing.
- 0:09Speaker 2: That's good.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Yeah, truly, just a coincidence that on a day that
- 0:13Speaker 3: the big NBA game fixing poker scandal thing broke, we
- 0:18Speaker 3: got a couple of clips from two of the all
- 0:20Speaker 3: time greatest players of all time that happened.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Stories they told recently because the NBA season kicked off
- 0:25Speaker 1: this week, so a lot of NBA players are on
- 0:27Speaker 1: various shows telling various stories because they're you know, announcers
- 0:31Speaker 1: and blah blah blah blah blah. First one is Michael Jordan.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Perhaps you've heard of him. Played for the Chicago Bulls
- 0:36Speaker 1: with some success.
- 0:38Speaker 2: He has the wagging tongue in the steely nerve.
- 0:42Speaker 1: You don't hear a lot out of him. I've always
- 0:43Speaker 1: considered him kind of dumb. He's always seemed like, at
- 0:47Speaker 1: least a very shallow guy to me, with not a
- 0:49Speaker 1: lot to say.
- 0:50Speaker 2: But yes, shallow might be a better description. Yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 1: A lot of people who are really good at focusing
- 0:56Speaker 1: on things to the point of obsession and being great
- 0:59Speaker 1: are kind of well, they're focused on one thing so
- 1:03Speaker 1: they weren't thinking about a lot of other stuff. But anyway,
- 1:05Speaker 1: here's a story Michael Jordan told on the show the
- 1:07Speaker 1: other day.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Do you ever do you ever pick up a ball?
- 1:09Speaker 4: And this ship, I hadn't picked up a ball in years.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Come on, just like walk past. There's got to be
- 1:14Speaker 4: a hoop somewhere at your place. You don't see a
- 1:17Speaker 4: hoop anywhere around here, right, I don't.
- 1:20Speaker 5: It's the last time you picked up a basketball and shot.
- 1:24Speaker 5: I was at the right a cup. Yeah, And I
- 1:27Speaker 5: rented a house from uh from the owner. Sure, he
- 1:31Speaker 5: came over to do pictures and grandkids and I was
- 1:37Speaker 5: beating greet and thank him for allowing me to stay
- 1:40Speaker 5: in the house. And he had a basketball court. He says,
- 1:42Speaker 5: I want you to shoot one free throw. I said, really,
- 1:47Speaker 5: I already paid for the already paid for the house,
- 1:49Speaker 5: and god likely you got to see me. So when
- 1:52Speaker 5: I stepped up to shoot your free throw, it's the
- 1:55Speaker 5: most nervous I've been. Stop it in years.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Stop it. Come on.
- 2:00Speaker 5: The reason being is those kids heard the stories from
- 2:04Speaker 5: the parents about what I did thirty years ago. Right,
- 2:09Speaker 5: So the expectation is thirty years prior and I haven't
- 2:12Speaker 5: touched the basketball. I hope you switched it. Absolutely. I
- 2:19Speaker 5: got the most gratifying that made my whole week is
- 2:24Speaker 5: that I was able to please that kid, not knowing
- 2:28Speaker 5: if I could.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Wow. See that's charming. Oh yes, he early showed that
- 2:34Speaker 2: side through this whole you know, days in the public eye.
- 2:38Speaker 1: It's funny, kind of an idea. I suppose there's no
- 2:40Speaker 1: reason for him to pick up a basketball. It's just
- 2:42Speaker 1: kind of funny that he, you know, having had one
- 2:44Speaker 1: in his hand probably every day of his entire life
- 2:49Speaker 1: from age five until whenever he retired forty one.
- 2:52Speaker 5: For you.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Just you know, why would he? I guess. I remember
- 2:56Speaker 1: I saw Larry Bird being interviewed a while back, and
- 2:59Speaker 1: Larry Bird was ask do you think you could bet
- 3:01Speaker 1: Michael Jordan one on one right now? He said, I'm
- 3:03Speaker 1: old and fat. God, I can't even imagine. He said,
- 3:07Speaker 1: I'd try real hard, I'd make him work for it,
- 3:09Speaker 1: but I'm old and fat. But that was funny. Here's
- 3:14Speaker 1: also a charming story. I thought this was great. This
- 3:17Speaker 1: is Shaq on The Tonight Show. Shaquille O'Neal on The
- 3:19Speaker 1: Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon the other night, there's a
- 3:22Speaker 1: game you.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Were playing against the Knicks and you didn't play so well.
- 3:25Speaker 6: So it was sort of like the karate kid like
- 3:28Speaker 6: he had small little sayings that really didn't make sense
- 3:32Speaker 6: at the time. But so to your next stories. I
- 3:35Speaker 6: had a terrible game versus the Knicks. He made me
- 3:38Speaker 6: fly home, and what I didn't like about the military,
- 3:41Speaker 6: he was like me and me at the house at
- 3:43Speaker 6: oh seven hundred, So now I got to do math
- 3:45Speaker 6: in my head. I met him at his house in
- 3:52Speaker 6: Orlando and we got in the car and he's the
- 3:55Speaker 6: type you don't speak unless you're spoken to. So I
- 3:57Speaker 6: was like, what did I do wrong? He's like, shut
- 3:59Speaker 6: the hell up. So driving and we going to this bridge,
- 4:04Speaker 6: and before we approached the family, he said, you couldn't
- 4:07Speaker 6: handle the pressure, and I was like, yeah, it was
- 4:10Speaker 6: masson square guard and I just Patrick, you and one
- 4:12Speaker 6: of my favorite players. I couldn't handle it. And he
- 4:14Speaker 6: says to me, pressure is when you don't know where
- 4:16Speaker 6: your next meal is coming from. And there was a
- 4:18Speaker 6: homeless family sitting right there, a guy, his wife and
- 4:21Speaker 6: two kids. He said, that's pressure. He said, I'm tired
- 4:23Speaker 6: of you spoil rich athletes making all his money, who
- 4:26Speaker 6: don't perform at the level that you're supposed to perform too,
- 4:29Speaker 6: blaming it on pressure. So he made me get out.
- 4:32Speaker 6: I made contact with the family, I got him apartment,
- 4:34Speaker 6: got him a job, I got into Shade. But things
- 4:37Speaker 6: like that just gave me a different perspective. So pressure
- 4:40Speaker 6: to me is like, well, you don't know where your
- 4:41Speaker 6: next meal is coming from. So I don't really believe
- 4:43Speaker 6: in the word pressure.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Woh my god.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I'd heard him tell that story before, and he said
- 4:50Speaker 1: that changed his perspective the rest of his career. That
- 4:52Speaker 1: was from his rookie year. He just he no longer
- 4:54Speaker 1: felt Pressure's just like just a game. I'm gonna try
- 4:56Speaker 1: my hardest, you know, I'd like to make this shot
- 4:58Speaker 1: or whatever. But it's not life or death. I'm rich,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I'm healthy, I got a great family. What am I
- 5:02Speaker 1: worried about here? Which everybody should be able to get
- 5:05Speaker 1: into that mindset really, but it's hard to do.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yeah right, Yeah. His dad sounds like an amazing guy.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Well he's a big military guy and everything. Yeah, yea, yeah, yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I love Shaq Shack and the love Harry Entertaining dude,
- 5:17Speaker 1: Shack Fu Shack Daddy as hilarious, Katie.
- 5:21Speaker 2: When I was at the University of Illinois, they played
- 5:24Speaker 2: the line I played, Did he go to LSU? Yeah,
- 5:28Speaker 2: they played LSU, and everybody's talking about Shaquille O'Neil, Shaquille O'Neil,
- 5:31Speaker 2: Shaquillo O'Neal, and uh. And I went to the game
- 5:34Speaker 2: and uh, and I came away completely unimpressed.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Really, he's just.
- 5:39Speaker 2: A big, huge dude who backs in with his ass
- 5:43Speaker 2: and flips the ball.
- 5:44Speaker 6: To the hoop.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and he doesn't.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Look terribly skillful. And then he made hundreds of millions
- 5:49Speaker 2: of dollars doing that very thing. Yeah, over and over again.
- 5:52Speaker 1: He was unstoppable there for about three four years.
- 5:56Speaker 2: He showed you.
- 5:57Speaker 7: Huh, hey, Kobe, tell me all my ass tastes. That's right,
- 6:00Speaker 7: Kobe tell me how my ass taste Haro shack ping
- 6:04Speaker 7: of all time? And then my only other Do you
- 6:07Speaker 7: know that story, Katie?
- 6:09Speaker 5: No?
- 6:09Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, I think it was after they won their
- 6:11Speaker 1: NBA championship in Miami. Of course, it was. That's what
- 6:14Speaker 1: he was up so he he and Kobe don't get along.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Lakers are a dynasty. He he and Kobe don't get along.
- 6:19Speaker 1: He leaves and goes to Miami, then wins a championship
- 6:22Speaker 1: in Miami.
- 6:23Speaker 2: So well, he was more or less sent away because hey, Shack,
- 6:27Speaker 2: it's Kobe Steam.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Yeah, so he leaves, he leaves, goes to Miami, wins
- 6:30Speaker 1: a championship in Miami, then goes to a club that
- 6:33Speaker 1: night and is the DJ at the club, and he's
- 6:35Speaker 1: they're scratched free syl. He's freestyling. That was his wrap.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Hey Kobe, tell me how my ass taste. That's right, Kobe,
- 6:42Speaker 1: tell me how my ass tastes.
- 6:44Speaker 2: And there's he did. He was actually pretty good freestyling too,
- 6:48Speaker 2: but that was like the hook.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I love that. Oh my god.
- 6:53Speaker 8: He seems like such a fun guy. I've seen so
- 6:56Speaker 8: many videos of him circulate online.
- 6:58Speaker 1: You know. There was one reason where he was backstage somewhere.
- 7:01Speaker 8: I don't know what he was doing, but there was
- 7:03Speaker 8: this little, tiny kid and he was wearing a Shack
- 7:05Speaker 8: jersey and it was more recent and the security the
- 7:08Speaker 8: kids went to go run to hug Shack, and the
- 7:10Speaker 8: security kind of pushed the kid back, and Shack looked
- 7:12Speaker 8: over and pushed the security guard out of the way
- 7:14Speaker 8: and pulled the kid over and put his arms around him.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And stuff.
- 7:17Speaker 8: It was. He just seems like a real down to
- 7:18Speaker 8: earth dude.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah, he's very generous, Yeah, very generous.
- 7:21Speaker 1: With it's because you know, you heard the story about
- 7:23Speaker 1: his dad. Is his upbringing that guard right, Yeah, So.
- 7:27Speaker 2: My only other Shack story, And Jack was there too
- 7:30Speaker 2: when the original Dream Team was practicing at the Charlotte
- 7:35Speaker 2: Coliseum whatever they call it where the Hornets played back
- 7:38Speaker 2: in the day, when we were working in Charlotte and
- 7:41Speaker 2: the players were coming out of the locker room to
- 7:42Speaker 2: get ready for practice. We were right there on the
- 7:45Speaker 2: court we'd been allowed to observe it or whatever. Super cool,
- 7:48Speaker 2: and all the guys come out, including a couple of
- 7:51Speaker 2: seven footers, and like, wow, that's a big dude, and
- 7:55Speaker 2: blah blah blah. And then standing next to a couple
- 7:58Speaker 2: of seven footers, Shack comes out and it's like, holy shit,
- 8:03Speaker 2: is that just one dude. I mean he was so
- 8:08Speaker 2: thick and so muscular. He made the other giant dudes
- 8:12Speaker 2: look like children. Wow, unbelievable.
- 8:14Speaker 1: That's right. Cool. That must have been so cool.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Stop it with that, right, Yeah, it was incredibly cool.
- 8:22Speaker 2: If you're an NBA fan, Yeah, it was amazing.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Oh yeah, although I was snubbed.
- 8:26Speaker 2: By the great Alonzo Morning.
- 8:28Speaker 1: That's right, That's right.
- 8:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I said, hey, lonso a quick picture and he's like, no, man,
- 8:34Speaker 2: I gotta go over here.
- 8:35Speaker 1: He just walked away.
- 8:38Speaker 2: So that's been a running joke between us now for decades. Nah,
- 8:42Speaker 2: I gotta go over there. Jack. Jack was snubbed by
- 8:44Speaker 2: John John No Rick Berry Rick berrys remember that Rick Berry.
- 8:50Speaker 1: He's in the newsroom for a while. He's a well
- 8:51Speaker 1: known dick though, so it's not that surprising. I said, hey,
- 8:56Speaker 1: I just I just gotta say hello, because, like my
- 8:58Speaker 1: dad will be amazing that I can say. I actually
- 9:01Speaker 1: shook your hand, and he said, you know whatever, went
- 9:03Speaker 1: back to that's what he actually says to a guy
- 9:07Speaker 1: who says what I said. I mean a colleague, no
- 9:10Speaker 1: less and yeah in a radio colleague. That's the opposite
- 9:12Speaker 1: of shack yeah whatever. People idolize me, whatever, who cares
- 9:17Speaker 1: people like me on him?
- 9:18Speaker 8: I've played basketball well, I don't need more, obviously, but
- 9:21Speaker 8: when I was a kid and I got to go
- 9:23Speaker 8: to the Warriors basketball camp, the Junior Warriors in Oakland,
- 9:27Speaker 8: and I'll never forget. They're smaller names, obviously, but Antoine
- 9:31Speaker 8: Jamison and Muggsy Bogues. Back in the day with the Warriors,
- 9:34Speaker 8: they were like the dream team. We got to scrimmage
- 9:37Speaker 8: those guys, and they were so fun and they were
- 9:40Speaker 8: out there just playing with all of us kids, and
- 9:41Speaker 8: I just remember looking up and going, oh my god,
- 9:44Speaker 8: Muggsy Bugs looked huge to me because I was I
- 9:46Speaker 8: was like a little peanut, but it was so.
- 9:48Speaker 2: He was about five eight or something. Yeah, one of
- 9:51Speaker 2: the smallest five to six.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:53Speaker 2: He played for Charlotte when we were there too. He
- 9:54Speaker 2: was amazing to one.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Really.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Oh by the way, if you are an NBA fan
- 10:01Speaker 1: and you like the whole thing, there isn't a video
- 10:02Speaker 1: that I saw not long ago of Shaq and Kobe
- 10:05Speaker 1: talking to each other. They kind of did an interview
- 10:07Speaker 1: with each other shortly before Kobe's death when they had reconciled,
- 10:10Speaker 1: talking about their days together and everything like that. That
- 10:12Speaker 1: was really interesting as a basketball fan, I reckon, Yeah, well,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I guess that's it.
