- whisps: So one of my favorite trends going around right now are the cups that are everywhere. Yeah. Yeah, that have like the I I don't want to say blown glass, but also like the glass like little things. They're like stamped with the glass image or like little thing. Like we have bows we both got for Christmas. I have one stream. I got her I got your daughter a croissant one. You did, yes. She also has a strawberry. Well, today I was at Target with my middle and we are looking for specifically Halloween cups for like my social media and just because why not? And Target has ghost versions of those cups. Adorable. And they have bats and they have skeletons. They had a bunch of really cute ones. Anyways, so we get up to where they are and I was like, okay, grab one of the ghost ones. That's what I want. And then my daughter moves the front cup and behind it, everyone on YouTube, you you're gonna have to see this. They had another ghost one. I can see it. Uh-huh. It looks like a normal one. A normal one. Well this one that was hiding Its eyes are in its armpits basically, and its mouth is where its belly button. It does look like sit the sloth. And my daughter, yeah, that's what my daughter goes, Mom, we have to get the derpy one. And I was We're not buying the derpy one. I want like I need this for aesthetics for my social media. Like, I need it to look good. And she was like, But mom, no one's gonna buy it. And then this lady of the aisle, she goes, I mean, I agree with you. No one's gonna buy it. You guys should probably just get it. And I was like, put the fucking thing in the cart, goddammit. I mean, she was really nice. I laughed too, because I was like, I'm like that too. It was like I always get like Noah's gonna love it. No one's gonna love it. I just feel bad. It's like a there Then I get a video and she's explaining to me why it's derpy and she had to have it. Uhhuh. And then she quoted Gray Gray's Anatomy in it. She goes, Pick me, choose me, love me and I was like, get out of here. Anyway, so we are drinking if you see it out of Well, I am drinking out of the derpy cup today. Derp Derp. I love a derpy ghost. It's adorable. He's adorable, maybe. He's an adorable derpy derp. Turn on our ghost tube app and see if there's any derpy ghosts in there. Yeah, but there's been so much activity with that ghost tube app. Like we've gotten so many names the last several times that we've recorded. It's crazy. It's been wild, so we'll just turn it on for fun. Actually, I'll wait till I do my joke because I need my phone for that and then I'll turn it on. I guess I guess I'm up again. Yeah, that's huge. I was I was in my mind like Okay, what's the do we do a joke now? Does it mean? No, it's a joke. It's a joke. Come on, we've been recording a lot lately. You shouldn't even be rusty. I c shouldn't. You should not. She's half alive right now. so do you know the place or hang on, I'm gonna start this again. Do you know the one place where I'm sorry and I apologize don't mean the same thing? No. A funeral. That was amazing. my gosh. That one was good. That one was good. It is. man. All right. 10 out of 10 on that one. 10 out of 10. Whatever. It's a good one. Hello and welcome to Lunatic Soup, the podcast where we go into all things wild, weird and unknown. We're your host, Meg. And I'm Raina. Ready to rope some Lunatic Soup. Let's go. So today, we are drinking. I've been wanting to try this one. Yeah, me too. I've been wanting to try it because they're. Boxes are so beautiful. Like the so this is a Starfall Cider Co. which is a local like PW cider, but everything is like the bo the cans are just plain white and black, but the box is like galaxy, but like actual photographs of a galaxy. And they also did like a star competition for the photos, like at one point. And I was like, I want to do it, and I didn't, but it's Imperial hazy honey crisp. Cider, which is a standard cider, but it is 8.4%. Per produced and canned in Auburn, Washington. Did you say this is a part of shillings? I don't know that it is, but I just say I assume it sounds this is the only reason I assume it is. Why? Is because we have heard a rumor that shillings sues people over their names. And this name, Imperial Hazy Honey Crisp. The Imperial, they cause their im yeah. Imperial is them. It usually means higher alcohol. Is that what it is? Yeah, the imperial. And then like ground control is zero. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And so that's why this may I'm just wondering if this is like a way for them and it's also Auburn, which is where Uhhuh, where shillings is. But then 'cause I know this from the wine industry, like they Sometimes you make too much wine for like how much you are putting out or allowed to put out or whatever estimating. And so you sell your cider to like smaller or wine to smaller companies or like businesses. And so I wonder if this is just not even them selling it, if it's just a smaller like rebranding. And it says on the side it says apple wine with natural flavors, which is which is cider, but I've just never heard of it referred to as apple wine. Anyways, well well Stellar by Nature is what it is. Starfall Cider Co. Stellar by Nature. I like it. Let's do this again sometime. Please recycle. That's cute. Cute. I'm excited. All right. I'm excited too. Did they have a lot of flavors? They had raspberry, which I I almost got, but then I was like it's I think it's good to start with raspberry. That's what that was and then they also had a wouldn't be for you but a spicy pineapple, which I thought that was It that would be exciting. It would be it would be something to sip on. I don't know if I'd want to hold a can. Well I just want it it'd be fun just to try it. Just to try. Well, and that's what I tried to see if they had individual cans because I was like maybe I'll get one of each and we can like sample, but they only got a six pack, so I grabbed them. I was thinking that today. We should do a wine not wine. I mean that too. But like a always wine. A cider sampling night with like get some like apple cider donuts and like some fun things and haven't we already done that in our lifetime? I guess we haven't sampled ciders. No, but we could have we could get like fun little cups. I mean, not anything with fun little cups. Are you kidding me? is she gonna fit? Is she gonna fit? god. no. We're overflowing. no, it's spiced. it's very appley. Ooh. that's really good. That does not taste like an eight percent. I also don't know that it tastes like shillings. Do you know what I'm saying? Does yours have floaty stuff in it? It's just yes. Yeah, it's like the sediment from the bottom. Yeah. The cider sediment. No, it doesn't taste like a shilling. And also, stillings doesn't typically have sediment like that in the bottom. Like that's not a standard I like that though. It's a very I listen like I wanna describe it in a way of wine, but it's like a full bodied apple wine or apple cider. Like the full body, it's like the full apple it's very appley is Extremely apply, but in a very good apply way. Is Star Cider Co I wanna make a rum cocktail with this, like a spiced rum. With this Yeah, wait, wait, wait. They may have acquired. Nope, they acquired a different company. Okay. So this isn't shillings. No, let's see. I can't f find it. No, I mean here's something online that says, thank you, shillings. thank you, shilling cider. And and Starfall Cider Co teams. So I guess not. Okay. Well interesting. I mean, it is delightful. It's really good. I like it. And I kinda I like the sediment at the bottom because I don't know, maybe that just makes it feel like more homemade. It does and it doesn't have a funk. There is no funk. Yeah, it's not as good as I would say, like, what the Canadian ciders are that without the funk, but this is a really good, like not funky at all, like it's a cider. Well, okay, then do we Do we do we do what we should do to it? Because we apparently can't have a normal apple cider without using it. I'm gonna I'm gonna be a wet blanket here. You're not going to. No. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying since it is an eight percent, can we split the fireball? yes. You mean you don't wanna die today? No, If we have to go be productive with our lives. I also love that that's you're like, I don't wanna be a wet blanket. But can we not just get fucked up? Yes, Meg. That's exactly I had book club the the other night. Yep. And it was lovely. It was on the lake. It was beautiful. It was very like this. Where where were you? That restaurant? No, we were at somebody's house. fun. Her parents. Her parents live on the lake. Yeah. And beautiful like little gazebo type thing with a with a ch table underneath and it was very practical magic vibes to me. Okay. It was but my contribution were was bringing angry whores. And I love it so much. I didn't No, if everybody would want everybody had one. And everybody loved it. Did it. Had people had them before? Or this is not a And there were some people that were resistant because they're like, ooh, fireball. I haven't done that since college. Yeah. Which is understandable, but because I mean, honestly, when I'm out and someone's like take a shot, like the things I can take shots of are like whiskey or which I mean fireball or tequila. Can you just just look how pretty this is? This is such a pretty fall drink. It's got the little Ghosties, your little derpy ghosts over there. And it's just this beautiful cider. Wanna know what I want on top of this? Now that we've done this. my god, that's good. I want, you know, the cocktail foam that I did. Yes. Like I'm now sour apple. that's I because I I have a bunch of people asking for more foam flavor. So I've been trying to think about it and what cocktails. And I tried to do one last night and I just wasn't happy with it. And then This just taking a sip, I was like, my god, this with like an apple foam on top. You could so do that. A caramel apple foam on top. I could put like caramel syrup. I don't know, maybe when we're done recording we'll need to just smidge caramel. Test one. Well, it's research science. Research and development. It is research and it's something that is you we gotta do. It's I did buy something that's a write off for the podcast the other day. I'll debut it when it comes in the mail. I'm excited. So stupid you guys, but I'm so excited. I'm excited that you're excited that I'm excited. Very excited. and my daughter told me I'm not allowed to bring we're going to a trailer park themed restaurant in New York. And I'm I know. I know. I when did you no find out this existed? Last night. My friend is in like full p planning mode and she's there's a trailer park themed restaurant in New York City. What is it called? It is called Hang on. I you're telling me that I could have gone there with my child and I didn't. But I'm not allowed to bring these items that I have purchased or my wig. Well what the fuck is wrong with that? I know. Everyone can go away. We're doing a white trash night on our houseboat and like Powell, like I told my mom it and my mom used to be completely like hated that and now my mom was just the most excited to do a white trash night. Look, she my friend made this whole like Google document with everything in it. Okay, hang on. It is called Hang on. The trailer park lounge. So mad because kind of near where my sister lives, too. Where we're in that vicinity. God damn it. I like there's a a pregnant woman on a lounge chair up above sending this to my little sister and saying, You better stew, take your dumb ass over there. I mean, and like we were looking for reviews and everyone's like, This place is freaking look at that, look at this. It is a trailer park themed restaurant. I'm I'm so mad. I know. am so mad. I'm so excited. How but it was my friend sent a couple of options and my second daughter gets to pick because this is her New York adventure. And I'm looking at her and the first pick was Georgian food. Because her name is Georgia. So it was like, let's go get Georgian food. So we're looking at the menu and I'm like I don't know, Georgia. That's a lot of cheese. And I know you're not a huge cheese. She's not? No, it's How did you breathe her? No. my god. She goes, Yeah, but it looks really good. And I'm like, Yeah, it does, but that's a lot of ch I was trying to get her to pick the trilogy. Obviously the trail. But that that's this should this is basically a write-off. It's where you're learning how to do our It's our bit. It's again, research and development. Research and development. now if I yeah, I'm gonna write it off because we can totally do that. I am just deceased that I had the opportunity to go there and I didn't even know it existed. It's gonna be amazing. It's gonna be amazing. I'm very jealous. I'll send picture. I'll probably FaceTime you. I would love to. I will FaceTime you. I just am I I don't appreciate your child for not letting you wear a wig to this because if you do not let your full Jessic out, that Jessica. I mean what are you gonna do? I don't know. But I feel like I feel like you and I could get in some trouble. If we ever went to New York City and we went black eyes. We would ha somebody would need to call us an Uber. W something, maybe an ambulance. God. Take us out. We'd also have it now. Just to get there. But wait, does it does phlegm cakes have a have a red nickname? I I phlegm cakes is not good That's honestly that's pretty that is. What about your child? N I mean, there's George. George. George. You don't like it. Yeah, I mean she's a girl named George. She's just a girl named George. And that's fine. That's fine. Exactly. But flam cakes, I don't know where that name came from. But if do feel like I named her that when we were kids and I I ha I do not recall. I do not recall why, but for twenty five years now that's been her nickname. And I still like it. I'm like, Do you remember why I s nope. Nope. But you know what? Sometimes the best names come like that. Mm-hmm. Just what it is. Yeah. Yeah. sh do we have a do we have a episode? I think we have an episode. What the fuck are we talking about today? Do we even know? Do I? It's kind of this one might be a little bit all over the place, but it's it's two different things that there's not enough of each thing to be its own episode. Okay. So we've kind of touched on both of them before, but I want to go a little bit deeper into them. So it's Tis the season. Uh-huh. Otherworldly things. I love otherworldly things. I think it's great. That's what we're talking about tonight. So as we get closer and closer to Sawin, that means ghosts, paranormal, supernatural, which I mean for us, that's every darn day. Every goddamn day. So today we are going to touch on Willow the Wisps. Willow of the Wisps. And Jack O'Lantern. Okay. Do you remember the the the S and L episode with Nick Cage, where they were having a baby and sitting there trying to pick baby names and every name she came up with he like rejected. No. And you find out at the end his last name was Asswipe, and he's like, it's As Sweepe. So that's why he was rejecting all these names. But one of them was, how about Sweepe? Asweepe. What about Jack? And he goes, yeah, Jack. lantern. That's an old one. That's an old sketch. But yeah, that's what I always think of. That's funny. I already gotta see it. if also if you're watching on the YouTubes, we're wearing matching well, they're not actually matching, but they well, God, they are. They both say they're the same. They're the same but different. What the fuck? Mine's from like Hollister or something too. I don't know. Jenna got it. My friend got it for me. Mine was ten dollars and ninety nine cents from the Walmart. But that is hilarious. But they're it's the same. It's the literally the same print. Yeah, literally. Yeah. That is so wait, what is can you see my l label? I am curious. or if it doesn't have but I think she got it from somewhere like Hollis. wait, here it is. It's it's sewn and it's airy. Airy. Which is like not ten ninety-nine from the Walmart. But for mine to be exactly they're you guys, they are exactly the same. Mine is in the style of a hockey jersey. Yeah, and mine's like an oversized sweatshirt. Is even better. And yours is the Seahawks colors. Mine, what are what's What's orange and black in the sports? is it the the Bangal Tigers? I actually yeah, I I was like I knew tigers, but I couldn't get there. The Bengals, yes. The Bengals. The Bengals. Bang Bangal. The Bengals. Goat balls. Go balls. Go sports. Yay balls. speaking of balls. I'm sorry. I'm gonna just We're gonna get there eventually, guys. Have you seen the what's that actress's name? Something Sweeney? have you seen the ad? And it Have you s like it came on today, we were like advertising sports? And she just kept saying sports and she's naked. She is naked. She is. I mean, you see you see the sad you see everything but the actual bits. Listen, she looks like that's great. What are we selling? However, what the fuck are we selling? And it for women in sports, everyone's like, this puts us back like twenty, thirty years. I was It's like sexualizing us And there's all these women that this is their fucking full time job that they trained their whole goddamn life. And now we're reduced to just names. To just tits and it just looked fantastic. She did. She looked. I looked like that. And she was holding like two footballs against anything else, but she looked great. I just think that that was a huge miss in the marketing department for where our world is and I said to my husband, I'm like What exactly is advertising this for just men? Well he goes he goes, Well, if you're actually watching the the ad, it's sports, Meg. But I guess you weren't watching the ad. You were watching something like that. Well, she just had balls everywhere. There was balls covering everything. But not a lot. But not a lot. But not a lot. But I'm just I like what? I just feel like women in sports already do not get anything they like they do not get acknowledged. It is a very like difficult thing. And then soda Like have a woman come on. Like have a fucking actual if they had gotten like what's her face? The rugby player I I Ilana is that how you say her name? So yeah. Anyways, but you know who I'm talking about. Who is she is buff. She is like that. She's she did she's from my town in Vermont. she really I didn't know that until like Googled her for something. But she did Sports Illustrated Swim Where Walk have her do it. Right. Have her be out there and like Yes, she is not this perfect right body well like f the definition of what society is. She is. But her doing it, but she is a badass sports player. Yeah. Do the same ad with her. Completely different. It would it would be a different message. Completely different. It be a different message. But still it's like so I mean either are yes. Are they gonna pay attention to women in sports because they're talented and work hard, or are they gonna pay attention to women in sports because they wear fitted clothing and you can see their tits and ass, which is the what that says. Anyways. So stupid. That was my rant. How'd we get there? Something about balls. always balls. Balls. Balls, balls. I love balls. Balls. Alright, what are we doing? so we're gonna talk about first the Willow the Wisp. And this comes with a bunch of different names. turning on Ghost 2, by the way. We know Willow the Wisp primarily from Brave. Yes. Willow the Wisps. And she follows the wisp into the woods and it leads her to the the is she a witch? The witch's house? Is she a witch? I think she's a witch. Yeah, the old lady or whatever. No, she's witch. Yeah. Yeah, she's a witch. some call it the foolish flame. And it is an atmospheric ghost light seen by travelers at night, especially over bogs, swamps, and marshes. So it's primarily associated with water. Not always. The phenomenon is known, phenomenon boo-boo-doo doo doo is known in the United Kingdom by a variety of names. Some it conflate jack-o'-lantern with the Willow Wis. Yeah, I was reading the same thing. I was reading some of that. I don't necessarily see it, especially now going into what they are all each mean. Mm-hmm. But that's one of the things that came up. Okay. they also called the Friar's Lantern and hinky punk. I like that word. Hinky punk. I feel like we could name something that we should name a drink a hinky punk. A hinky punk. I mean that's fun. But though so that All of those are the same as like what the wisps, the wheels and the wisps. Yes. And they're they're by a bunch of different I mean, there's even more. But it is said what is They Hide. They hide. The wisps do hide. They do. Woo. they're said to mislead or guide travelers, but like they resemble like a flame or a lantern and mislead in them. the movie Well brave brave. What did they look like? They were like it was It was just like a little ball of light. Yeah, okay. Yeah. It reminds me every time of like multiple little balls of light. It was like it also reminds me of Avatar. Do you remember how they had those like jellyfish? They but they weren't they were like I haven't seen that movie since the first one came out in theaters. honestly. Well, anyways, they have they they're like little things that move and it always reminds me of that, but I n you know Will of the Wisps. And just that's where my head goes for some reason. I don't know. My kids love Avatar for some reason. Really? Like the one with the very tall blue people. Yeah. Like Sigorny Will. Like the yeah, the OG. Okay. right. Yep. I don't know. it's fun to turn on and yeah. I it's not they're not bad movies. No, not I they like all like all of them. They've seen all many are there? I don't know, like three or four. They've seen them. I don't watch all of them. I've only seen the first. I mean sitting down and watching. I'm trying to get better at sitting down. Yeah, get it it's hard too. I do it when I have a project. I have to like have something. You have to have something to do. Yeah. Like high embroidery or dining art or something like that. Yeah. We watched Show out of the Dead last night. Yeah, I know. My husband was fucking dying by the videos you were sending. We were over at my friend's house and he he was like showing the part and none of them knew what the movie was and he was dying. I was like, You know I don't watch fucking zombie movies. It was such a good movie. All my children liked it. It is it you know, Dawn of the Dead is like an actual bullfight zombie movie. This is a spoof. I know that you know I still can't handle spoofs of zombies. There was one part where they like literally disembowel a man and I'm like, okay, maybe look away and then that part's maybe not for everybody. Then they giggle. so am I doing what am I doing with my children? It's fine. It's they're fine. They're fine. equivalents of Willow Wis appear in European floor folklore. There's Ignis Fautus in Latin, Fi Fe Folette in France, Iglick. Pig Latin, Ehrlich in German, Dwalik in Nether Nether Netherlands, and then Foco Fato in Italy. All these things resemble or mean lights. Okay. Paranormal lights. Even though if they might not have the word paranormal, still the same thing. Otherworldly. Otherworldly. They also have they're called Naga fireballs in Thailand. Whoa. And in North America, they're called the Paulding Light in the UP in Michigan, like the Upper Peninsula. Yeah. There's the Spook light in southwestern Missouri and and in northeastern Oklahoma and in Saint Louis they're called the Saint Louis light in Saskatchewan. Okay. They're also in Arab folklore and they're called the Abu Fonus. Like they're everywhere. Everywhere. But isn't that similar to the lights that Min Min Min lights. Yes. Min Min Min. Min Min Min. But also Min Min? Min Min or Min Min. Min Min. Min Min. I want to play. It's with the lights? Okay. Okay. it but wasn't there do you remember when we were talking about Orcas Island, there was something with lights on Orcas Island too? Mm-hmm. There was something like this of like what were they called? I don't remember. We'll have to look at it. But anyways, yeah. Okay. in folklore Willow the Whis are like a lot of people think that they're ghosts or fairies or elemental s elemental spirits meant to either reveal or show a path of direction. Okay. The whips wisps are portrayed as dancing or flowering in like static form. Just like you were describing, like these balls of lights kind of dancing and all of that. and then will usually fade away when they feel they're no longer needed. Okay. Mm-hmm. There's Mexico folklore and it says that the phenomenon is witches who transformed into the lights. And it said that the lights are indicators of places or gold hidden with treasure. So the witches lead you to gold hidden with tr like that's hidden treasure. I wish that was true. I wish it were true. Can I find some hidden treasure? I want some. Me too. Just just a little bit. Just a little bit. Just like a couple gold bars. Yeah, like one mil. I'll be fine. It's not much to but it would it would get me on my feet. You're on your feet. We're on our f but but it would like it would be good. Pay off the house, maybe buy, maybe get some more space. Yeah. you know, like I don't wanna be selfish here. See, and I'm th the pff I need a lot more than that. At least five. Better than I have now. Well, that's true. I mean, if someone just wants to give me a million dollars, I'm not gonna say no. That still is a decent chunk of money. And yeah. I just know how fast that it how fast it goes. it would be gone very quickly. It's wild. Very quickly. It would be some sitting down and strategizing what to actually put money. Always blows my mind when there's like com like competition T V shows and people are gonna win like you know, fifty thousand or a hundred thousand dollars and like this is gonna change my life. And it's funny, but it's really not it really doesn't. Like it like it might you might be able to do a few more things than what you are now. If you go on a vacation or if you invest it properly. Yeah, yeah. But it's that is not life changing money. You can do things with it to that are smart and that help out. Right. But But it's not like it's you still gotta work. I'm always like it's not that's not gonna just all of a sudden put it so you're like No No I mean but but I will give it a good old college trial. Right, and if people are smart with it and don't just blow it all, then you know, it'll do something nice. A million, yeah. Put it in a high yield savings account. Let it roll. Yeah. In Massachusetts, there's the Bridgewater Triangle that we have talked about. And their folklore has these ghostly orbs of light and they have no idea what they are. So Wow. There's no scientific explanation for those. They have in Louisiana and it's the the Fe Foley that I Fey Foley? Yeah, I think that's how you say it. And that obviously is French. And the legend says that they are souls sent back from the b dead to do God's penance, but instead attacks people for vengeance. Ooh. Mm-hmm. Well Is that religious people saying that? Probably. They sometimes suck the blood of children and some level some legends say that it's the souls of a child who died before baptism. So that's Okay. That's cool. I don't like any of that, but I mean they ha they have some sort of version of a wisp in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia. In Asia there's they're called the Aliyah or Marsh Ghost Light, and it's the name given to a strange light phenomenon occurring over the marshes and observed by the Bengali people, especially fishermen. in West Bengal. The marsh light is attributed to some sort of marsh gas apparitions is what they call them that confuse fishermen and make them lose their bearings bearings and lead to drownings. So that almost sounds like they're trying to come up with an ex like a reason for it, but they're still putting it in a paranormal way. Yeah. Right? That does. Like that's kind of weird. And the ghost you just said she hides. Do you want to play she hides? Who's hiding? Where are we playing? Where are you? Hide and go seek. She, what was it? Martha? Mm mm. it was Diane. Diana, but there was a Martha. Wasn't there a Martha? Maybe. Who's Martha? Did I make it up? I don't think there was a Martha because I Martha resonates with me somewhat, but and I feel like we would have said that. But there was last time it was like Diana and like Ethan or something. There was an Ethan. We had a Michelle. Yeah, we had Michelle. And then before that we had there was a bunch of names. It was like Julie and the old hag. Where are you at? I know you. Okay, that floored because Meg and I connected over the old hag. Yeah. So that's funny. Interesting. Alright, well what's your name, hag? Are you calling me a hag? That's rude. I mean I guess I'll did you see your cup? Doop di-doo. Doo. It's a derp did derp. Dr. It is the slap. What is the slot? European folklore say that the lights are the spirits of unbaptized or stillborn children that are in purgatory. I don't love which I don't really like that. In Germany again, it's an unbaptized child, but the child could be redeemed if the remains of the first buried near if they re if they bury the child near a church. Because they say that the rain water from the church will splash into the grave and baptize. Well. That's cool for them. They're actually happening though, so I believe they're not children. Logical. That's not logical. Not in my opinion. I do not believe it's children who haven't been baptized. No. I could say it's children coming back to visit, or like I like nothing. Why don't we have to like stuck like damn them somehow? Well that's like just because you did They're also children. I don't believe children can be damned in any way. Well, I'll never understand about religion is like that everyone like is damned if they don't do exactly That's the one thing I will give the Mormon church. That's the one thing I will give the Mormon church. If you are before the age of baptism and pass away, you're said to just go right back to God. Yeah. So that's that's the one thing that I'll give them 'cause this whole like I remember learning about purgatory and like children and it was just it was so foreign to me. Well, but even like to With Christianity, like my dad was baptized. Okay. But because he quote unquote didn't accept Jesus into his heart. But how can he be baptized if you're not accepting if you didn't because he got baptized as a baby. But as an adult, he didn't like Yeah. Continue that and like devote his life to Christ or whatever. Like, you know, eat his blood or body and blood, you know, it sacrament. we don't call we didn't call it that. We called it starts with a C communion. Communion. communion sacrament. Yeah. I it's sure it's same. I just remember it being called communion. I remember I did it because I just wanted to see what the crackers tasted like and I wanted to drink the grape juice. We had we had bread and water. No, we had it. We had grape juice and they don't do wine anymore? Were we on a budget? Probably at the Catholic church they do. We were at we were at little, you know, just a midway covenant community church in Des Moines, Washington and You're following good. Yeah. Anyways, point point of the story is that like that to me just I that everyone goes is going to hell who didn't do that. Like that is if if this person is can you help me? Nope, we can't. If God is so great and wonderful, he then you don't just aren't horrible just because you don't You came here to live a human experience and you live that human experience. Yeah, and so there's a lot of caveats to what I just said, but you know what I mean. But I know and it just pisses me off that like they're Doing this to children. Like it's not chilling. Like that's like they're yeah. Like, don't. And then to put those poor parents in that spot if they truly believe it, like, it's just horrible. Well, there's this big thing going online right now where a very, very, very big influencer almost got in a like terrible car accident and he swerved last minute and the car it hit the car behind him, killed the driver. The driver was a dad with a young kid. and the influencer who almost died got on and was like, God is so good, I live, da-da-da. And everyone is like, hang on a minute. But God is so good to you, but not the guy behind you. What did that guy do? Right. What if he was also devoted to God and did this? Like, why him and not you? Why is why is God only good? And it just showed like some of the narcissism and some of the things that like is big throughout the church recently. And it was one of those that like it was just it's just sad because it's like that man's poor family is like, you know, they lost him. And it's like to have an influence to be like, God is good. I'm alive. Yeah, don't gloat about that. Shut the fuck up. Instead quietly go on about your life and and help out that family. Literally, go do something, but don't get online and talk about how you're the fucking important one and that guy and that guy's not. Like his his life was less valuable than yours, or like I don't know. It just made me sick because I'm like, just fucking like yes, it's a miracle or It's amazing that you didn't die in my opinion. It just meant it your time was not there. Have some fucking humility instead of being like God is good, God it was all about God and him and it was just like what's wrong with that. Maybe maybe put up something to raise money for this family. Well I'm sure he has now because he got born. I bet he did for Anyways, God, where do we get Willow Wisps? Willow the Wisps. Sorry, tangent. The the Danes, the Finns, the Estonians, Latvians, Swedes, Lithuanians, and Irish people, all the groups throughout Europe and you You gotta note like all these groups are very different like areas of the world, different groups of people. But they say they believe that the Will of the Whips mark the location of treasure buried underground or water. And you can only find it when you are taken there by a wisp. Okay. So I believe stumble across it, nothing like that. So they but they have treasure or water. Yes. And but it has you can only find it by this magical procedure and the wisps have To take you there. Should we go find some wisps? Let's go find some wisps. I would actually love to. I wouldn't I don't think they're anything like that. I f I my thought is they're probably like aliens, and that's a way of them coming down and like observing without being too mm-hmm, or maybe not down, up, through, over balls of light from somewhere came out through the ocean. I don't Well, in Finnish mythology, they're called eternal flames. Okay. And that's that they're eternal flames. So they're like this fairy ethereal flame that will never go out. And again it can lead you to where you need to be. Not just gold, but it can lead to But just anything in life, it'll give you direction if you see one. Mm-hmm. Maybe an ancestor, maybe a Maybe. You never know. Maybe. Just well, what was Brave? What was her name? Merida. Merida wanted to get a w a wish. What did she want? Merida spell. Merida wanted to get rid of her mom. She wanted a spell to get rid of but she wanted Yeah, to make well to make her mom be nicer to her. And she turned into a bear. Or like and she turned into a bear. Yeah. Or like it was yeah, to get rid of her mom or do something because her mom was making they're gonna make her marry a guy. And she just wanted to shoot arrows with the boys. Yeah. She wanted she's women in sports, man. Wim and we circle back. Circle back. Look at this talk. Look at us. Look at us, guys. See, it all makes sense. Now this says hotel. Don't know what that means. Anyways. I don't like hotels. I'm always worried. I'm always worried there's gonna be bugs or like something. I don't like hotels. Even then like the night like I've stayed in a lot of crappy hotels, but even nice hotels, I'm always worried. You don't know. I'm not. I'm in a hotel, full. And I can't sleep in hotels. Well, that's a normal thing. Yeah. So that is like literally your body. it's like I'm heightened it's on defense mechanism. And my my kids always make fun of me. I don't do this intentionally, but when I go to a hotel Who double hose? Again, I always sleep closest to the door. Yeah. My whole family makes fun of me. No matter what position the bed I always will pick the spot closest to and I don't do it intentionally. I just feel like that's like I have to protect. Maybe I don't know. I don't know. But I think in like every room I've ever been in, I always sleep closest to the door. It's just something I that's my side of the bed. It's always closest to the door. I'm well, that's Texanite bed spots. I'm You're well no, well, in our room we are, but it just depends like we always have the same you always have the same scene. We don't we don't have the same side. I just am always closest to the door. And it wasn't until years and years of this that my husband pointed it out. really? Mm hmm. Yeah. No, we're I always have like, you know, we have the same bed spots. It doesn't bother me how close I am to the door. I honestly feel like I'd want my husband closer to the door if he wakes up. No, I got this. I got this. Hospitable. Hospitable hotel. No, hospital. Hospital. That's right. What are we doing to the hospital? I don't want to go. Hotel, hospital? Me either. I will say I stayed in hotel for my sister's 40th in Hawaii. And maybe it's just because I was kid free, but it was this huge king bed to myself with these like blackout curtains. I slept like a goddamn angel. I slept like a baby. I was there are some hotels that I've been in. Like stayed at the Ritz Carlton down in Portland before, like photographing a wedding, and they put me up there. That bed was probably the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in in my life. It was like a fucking I think I remember you telling me about this. I was Tex hated it. He was like, That was not comfortable. I was like, that is all I want is to like I can't sleep in that every day. Yeah, I like my bar. I need like a firmer match. I need to for like every day. This was just This is just for a night was two nights. It was fucking glorious. and give me hotel sheets and the comforter. Give me all the things. I love it. Anyways. Okay. All right. So this is where it circles to kind of the Jack story because in Br yeah. You can't understand. In British tales, protagonists named either Will or Jack are doomed to haunt the marshes with a light for some misdeed that they and we'll talk about that when we talk about the jack-o'-lantern. But that's kind of the British tale of it. That stay away because this is a bad person. Okay. And so they're they're doomed to wander the earth and you don't really want to come across that. Hmm. Yeah. So like These creatures seem to be less about the name and more about the atmosphere that is associated with them. Because when you look up stories of people who have had these experiences with the Will O'The Wisps, there's not a lot of fear involved. It's usually this really strange feeling that they all seem to tell. Okay. It's like this weird, not neither not really good or bad, just a atmospheric change. Okay. When they are associ and they they know that they're not looking at something that is not of this world. Interesting. Some say that the will-o' whisk could easily be explained. A lot of people say it's bioluminescence, especially when you're around water, and a lot of these are associated with water, which you saw that. I mean, I've seen bioluminescence my whole life because of But those things up in you sent me a picture last year or a video. Text through a rock in the water and they just brrr. Yeah, which is insane. But that With that, it's in the w this is like a in the water and it you when it and it's not when the water's sitting still, you don't see anything. It's when it's disturbed. Disturbed is when you so that's why throwing a rock into it or it's the waves crashing. But if you're like kayaking or something, it's gonna be the most insane thing ever. I I have a fear of water. I don't know if I could kayak at night, but in this situation, if I had somebody with me I think I Literally, I think I've told the story before, but was on a sailboat, going from like the San Juans up to Canada, and we stopped in the middle of a channel and jumped off into the ocean into the bioluminescence. And it was quite possibly the coolest magic of my life. Yeah. It was one of those just like pure fucking magic. Is it like like when I saw the the Northern Lights for the first time? Mm-hmm. Like I cried because it was so beautiful. Is it like that? Like I think it probably would be Because I've grown up with it. Uhhuh. It like I grew up with it at Poulton Bay. Like at our property we would see it there. We at camp is we would see it there. So for me it was it's an algae, right? It's an algae. Yeah. Or something or plank dinner. yeah, I think it's an algae. but either way, it it is so cool to see. Feel like seeing it for the first time as an adult. I'd yes, I would probably get emotional. Yeah. it's yeah. I don't know. Like Did it bite you or anything? I don't know. Merrowstone Island. Yeah. That's where you sent me a video of it. They have it up there depending on what time of year. When was it was that like November? I can't. Yeah, yeah. Because it was cold. No, but the kids were still going in the water. no, maybe that was the last time you went there in the spring. Yeah. I wanna say it was cold. Well, I feel like it's usually during the summer is when it's out. So yeah. I don't I don't know, but it was magic. It is it's just always magic. It was so we gotta figure out well we can see when we can assess when it might be around and we'll try and find you some because it is is there are there like like with the whales like there's like it's over here now sort of yeah well you can yeah it'll it can tell you where it's like I guess active or happening or whatever. It is a fun and then seeing like seeing sea life swim through it like light up. It all lights up. The world is so magical. It is. It can be. Love science and earth. Earth science. Earth science. If you will. Yeah. sometimes the Will of the Wisps are considered a bad omen that usher in death to the person who saw it. no. In Wales, this is primarily Welsh. it is said that the wisps would follow the carts in funeral processions because it follows death or it brings forth death. But following the carts in a funeral procession, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. I think you can find comfort loved one or a like or the person showing up for their loved ones or so ancestors. The the lights are everywhere. They're literally on every continent. There's a different story for everything 'cause that's what happens. But to me, that's what brings some truth to it. Like with Bigfoot. Right. Because these cultures didn't know each other existed and they still have the same thing. Yeah. Which I love. And it's everywhere. We've talked about them a billion times. So we don't actually know what it is. But each culture kind of has its own story of what it is. Some good, some bad. I don't like the religious undertones of it being a a child that wasn't baptized. And I know that back in the day when people were seeing it before religion was a thing, in danger it says. Don't know who's in danger. the it wouldn't have had a religious undertone. It would have probably been I mean, could have been like, you know, you'll if you follow it, you'll die. But also like could be like, But that could be true. Like you're in some of these harsh locations. If you f go into the woods, you can bury the Legal that away. Yeah. I mean, that's like the menonungal. Like that's the the whole thing there. Like, don't go into the woods. The menonungal will suck your blood and eat you. Literally. I just still feel like it's probably just like a alien orb that's like following us. Well, that's the other thing. Is that what an orb is? Yeah. Like is a is a wisp the same thing as an orb? Because I saw some people having that discussion. There's nothing there's not a lot out there on that. Mm-hmm. But why wouldn't it be an orb? Well, my thought this whole time was that it's basically just another name for an orb. So Hm. So have we seen Wisps? Because we've seen orbs. Yeah, it wasn't light though. It wasn't. No. Just a It was like a ball. I will never get over that. That was so freaking funny. That was for those who haven't listened to us for forever. Was we were sitting in we used to record my office upstairs and Meg literally we were talking about something. She goes, I don't actually believe in orbs, and goes on this tangent about it. And about two minutes later, this orb Shut your mouth and sit down. Comes from like the side of the thing and We have video of us seeing it. We're both like somewhere at somewhere on our Instagram if you go stock, you'll see it we posted about it. And you can s almost see it like parti Can you see it a little bit in the camera when it happens? And But we saw it in real time and you can see our our faces tracking it. We hadn't talked to each other about it. We just both start tracking And we're like then there disappeared no way it was anything else because it was not a bug. It was not a we it was a circle. You could see, like if you just saw it on camera, you could think it was a bug or dust. But because we saw it in real time. Yeah you watch us both watch it and then we're like, literally track it with surprise. It was the most wild. Like again, it's always something well I always say this. If someone else sees it, it makes you feel 10 times better or it's a whole poof disappeared disappeared. And it was but it was wild. But that was that was a very humbling moment for me. We don't know who, what, where, what it was But it was an orb. It's just like shut up. Mig literally goes, I don't believe in orbs. And it said, hold my beer. Let me show myself, bitch. It worked. One of my favorites. Honestly. I that was a good one. We've had some cool moments on the podcast. That was like one of my favorites. That was a good one. Yeah. I like it. So now we're gonna talk about the jack-o'-lantern. Okay, here's my question. Didn't we do an episode on Jack o' lantern? We very briefly touched on it as like not a Yuletide monster, but something along that line. Okay, wasn't there you mispronounced? I was gonna get there. Okay, good. I can't believe I was trying to read also known as stingy jack. And you called it stingy jack. Stingy Jack. I kept It wasn't that bad. And I'm like and you look at it, you go, That's stingy, you idiot. 'Cause you're kinda like stingy Jack. I don't know if I get it. It didn't like it didn't sit right. I'm like, wait a second. And I look at him like, 'cause it's stingy. Stingy. Not stingy. Stingy. Way more sense. Anyways, continue. All right. Also known as drunk Jack, Flaky Jack, Jack the Smith, Pumpkin Jack. What is it? Shine. Shine. and it is a folk tale and legend from Ireland, which is usually told around all Hallows Eve. So the story goes that centuries ago in Ireland there was a drunkard known as Stingy Jack, and he was known everywhere as a manipulator, a deceiver, and he liked to trick and cheat people out of money, out of anything that would benefit him. And he did this his entire life. One night, Satan overheard that Jack's e overheard j about Jack's evil deeds and how he would talk to people. And The devil went out to find him for himself to see if Jack lived up to this vile reputation. He was like, that's my kind of man. Yeah, let me let me hang out with him. So typical of Jack, he was drunk and watering wandering through the area at night, and he came upon a body on a cobblestone path. The body was had a grimace on his face, and it turned out to be the devil himself. Jack realized that this was his end, because Satan got up and said he was going to collect his soul. Jack made one last w request and he asked the devil to let him drink ale before he departed to hell. The devil was like, why not? Let's go have a pint. Let's go do it. So Satan took Jack to the local pub and bought him as many alcoholic beverages. Please come back. Please come back. We didn't go anywhere. Jack asked Satan to pay for the tab. So he brought him his order all the stuff. Jack said, Why don't you pay for the tab? I don't carry any money with me. Satan w was, Well, I am Lord of the Underworld. You think I got coin on me? Yeah. The fuck. Like I don't have any. So Jack goes, It's okay, you are Lord of the Underworld. You can turn yourself into money. You can turn yourself into coin and pay the tab. And then we can just be on our way. You can bring me to hell. All is good. no. So Satan turned himself into a coin to pay the bartender. And then he was gonna change back when no one was looking. Jack took the coin and put it in his pocket instead of paying the bar. In his pocket, he had a crucifix. So now Satan was stuck as a coin. God damn it, Satan. Mm-hmm. So he coer so after a while, Satan was like, You gotta let me turn back, you gotta let me turn back. Yeah. So this he coerced Satan to agree to Jack's demands. So in exchange for Satan becoming Satan again and being out of Jack's pocket, he had to spare Jack's soul for ten years. Right. Okay. So Jack keeps being Jack for ten years. Ten years go by, and Jack found himself again in the presence of the devil. This time he happened upon Satan in the same setting as before, and he accepted it was his time to go to hell for good. Satan prepared to take him for hell, and Jack asked if he could have one apple to feed his starving belly. Satan agreed. You're not very smart here, Satan. Satan, come on. Mm-hmm. Have we not learned? As he climbed up the branches of a nearby apple tree, Jack surrounded the base with a crucifix. So now Satan was trapped up in a tree and he demanded to be released. Jack did make a second demand. He said, I'll release you if you give me an I'll give me another request. And his request that he would never take his so to hell. That Satan had no choice. So he said, Okay, I'm not gonna take you to hell. Let me go. I got other souls to snatch. I personally am sitting here feeling like Satan has a lot more power than they're giving him. You mean Jack has a lot more power? Satan Satan should have more power. Well, I'm just saying. I see what you're saying. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Okay. Like, come on. Come on, Satan. Come on, Satan. So eventu so Jack went free. Satan left him alone. Eventually, Jack continued with his ways. He drank all the time and he died. Okay. Jack's soul prepared to enter heaven through the gates of St. Peter, but he was stopped. Jack was told by God that because of his sinful lifestyle and deceitfulness and drinking he was not allowed into heaven. So Jack was like, fine, be that way. I'm going to hell. So he went to the gates of hell and demanded to be let in. Satan said he had no obligation to Jack and could not take his soul because of the argument because they agreed. So he gave Jack an ember from hell to light his way. Jack is now doomed to roam the world between the plains of good and evil. So he didn't want to carry ember. It was too hot. So he carved out a turnip, placed the ember inside, and wanders the countryside with his turnip lantern forever. I just wonder all of the very big religious folks who s who Partake in Halloween, which is fine and everyone should partake because it's fun, but light jack-o' lanterns that they're actually lighting a light for Satan. I wonder if they know. Satan's Satan's hellfire. Satan's literally literally. That's what it is. We will come, it says. Well, great. But here's the thing though. Wouldn't Jack be let into heaven because he defied Satan? I mean, that's where we get into all these just saying like if we're really going through it then. He did all he was against Satan. He was he made Satan into a coin. He really he trapped Satan up in a tree. Yeah, like wouldn't he just with a cross? Like, doesn't that mean he's fucking godly? You would think so, but I'm just saying sounds like some contradictions. There maybe a little bit. So in Ireland and Scotland, people actually carve turnips and ruta rutabagas. Into lanterns with grotesque faces and these are meant o to ward off Stingy Jack. Okay. Because if he sees them, he thinks, so this answers that question. He thinks, these are lights from hell. I'm not going that way. So it's like protect your home from from Stin whoever the fuck Stingy Jack is. Stingy Jack and real dirtbag it sounds like. Well, yeah, but what? He's drunkard? I guess. And he's supposed to come around on sowen every year, so that's why you put your your carved turnips. In this case. Mm-hmm. And it'll keep Jack away. The carved vegetables are placed in windows or doorways as protective talismans. And this is tied to ghost light for folklore, which ties into the Willow Wisp, who are ghost lights. Mm-hmm. And it is said, you can put your jack-o' lantern on the table. You could. You really could. What did he say? How did I die? We don't know. I don't know. How Hey, we've gotten that question before. I don't like it. I don't know. We don't know who you are. If you give us your name, maybe we could try and figure it out. But we don't know how you died. Mm. I'm sorry. So when Irish immigrants arrived in America in the nineteenth century, they wanted to continue their rel their their traditions. What'd it say? What brought you here? Well, I this is my house. My house. We're telling stories, Mayan. Yeah, where we talk into our microphones, we tell stories about spooky stuff to people who listen to us because they like to hear about the spooky stuff. What brought you here? That's a good question. Even better. Continue. So immigrants arrived in America. We didn't really have turnips here, but we did have pumpkins. And they're a hell of a lot easier to carve than a turnip. They are. So the Irish brought the tradition of carving pumpkins and making jack-o'-lanterns and putting them out on soin or Halloween. I love it. Isn't that pretty cool? I mean it's a protect your house. Yeah, it must have been. I just remember us talking about it. Yeah. But when you talk about like Stingy Jack or the Jack-O-Lantern, it kind of also has to do with what we talked about, I think it was last week or the week before, of the headless horseman. Which the rider going through the night with a with a lantern. Yes. So all of these things kind of tie together. Basically, if you're out at night, maybe stay away from any lights you don't know the source of. I feel like that is a really good thing to say no matter what. Like that in general is like It could be fine. It could lead to gold, but I don't know. It could lead to gold, or it could lead to your demise. You don't know. Potato tomato. You don't know. It's kind of like today there was a hitchhiker on the side of the road who looked like Santa Claus. cool. And he was standing out in front of our favorite bar, the water hole, and he was flagging me down. And part of me wanted to stop because he looked desperate, but he also had his thumb out like hitchhike status. And I had my daughter in the car, and I was like Listen, I mean, even alone I wouldn't have stopped, but it's like I w if you needed help or needed something, I would love to help you, but there's also like a billion places to like if you he actually needed like assistance. Yes. Around him, like the bar, the Jiu-Jitsu place, there's a restaurant. There's like if he was actually in dire need, he would have had he wasn't in the middle of nowhere. And I was like, Okay, he was also in like board shorts. Is he the one that looks like he almost looks like an old sailor? 'Cause there's this guy that I see all the time who's like white hair, white beard. Yeah, he but he looks like a sailor. I guess yeah, his outfit did it was like striped shirt and the belly shorts. Okay. Maybe that was him. I know he he when I went by him he threw his hands up with he was so mad and I was like, Listen, sir Like you have children with you. And also like the day of hitchhiking is done, what do you expect? I'm just gonna put you in the car and hope for the best. So in the nine probably the early to mid nineties, we were living in New York in the Hudson Valley and my mom brought us home. And then she goes, I gotta h I gotta head back out. She passed two hitchhikers on the road in the middle of the woods and she went and got them and brought home. They ended up camping out in our backyard for like two weeks. Their name were Clive and Julia. They were he was from England. She was from Ireland. They ended up being in contact with us for years and years. They went back, they got they were married. She was really sick when they were camping in our backyard. Turns out she was pregnant. She didn't know it at the time. my god. I have like rings and jewelry from Ireland that she would come back with for me. Like how cool is that? Because there was once upon a time. There was once upon a time. But that's Clive and Julia. I don't know. And Clive looked like Sam Neal. I always got Clive and Sam Neal, like Merlin, like so cool. I wonder where they are. Like, you do you wonder where they are? I do wonder I wonder that all the time 'cause I have the ring, my little ring from Ireland. Like I wonder it all the time, actually. You're like one of those people who you could post that story on TikTok and like you know where things would go viral. I mean, you know, you never want to that but with names like that. And they're from probably in Ireland and like You know, where are they? Or like what happened to you? Or this is ordue or these your parents. Like I could tell you the road. They you're on Matterville Road in Sogadis, New York. Like it's And like you're like or like you're on social media and your mom found out she was pregnant with you while she was backpacking through America. Right. And you know, it'd just be like, Where are you guys? What are you doing? What's going on? What's going on? That would be that'd actually be a really funny I know it'd be a fun if anybody knows them. Yeah. I feel like we need more people to hear it, but but you know, some th sometimes you're like Don't want that, but also you do. Like that'd be so I just to connect again, like be like, hey, it's what I want. They say yes. That would be nocy say yes. That would be a trip. But it's one of those things. It would be. And it's also a it's like a message in a bottle. It is. And it's one of those things where like people love sharing that kind of shit because they want to see The end. They want to see you find each other. It's like a fun little like I mean shoot, so you guys you wanna send me to the UK? Sure. I know. Let's do this. You've got to come with me then. Come on. Well, I feel like we just gotta post it. Well, like we could do it and post it and then just like see what happens. That would be so freaking fun. It would be. It's actually. All we're gonna think about it. We're gonna think about it. I don't believe it. How many people are named Clive and Julia? Like, come on. Yeah. And like Do you have where they were from? You have like there's it's there's I don't know. I don't know. You're right. Nowadays it might be not so hard. You don't have pictures of them, do you? Or does your dad somewhere? Probably. I probably do at some point. I I would have to ask my dad if he could look through the old books. You should and see. Because if you had pictures, that makes it ten times easier. Yeah. And just be like, you know, they were the nicest people. My mom picked them up hitchhiking. They stayed in our backyard in a tent. In a tent. She was super sick. I remember her like being in the tent super sick. Nicest people. And it was the first time I'd ever really heard anybody with accents. Yeah. So it was like a trip. How old do you think you were? It was probably ninety-two, ninety-three, ninety-four. Yeah. Wild. So yeah. That's fun. I feel like we should do it. That'd be a fun experience. I'd actually be really fun.
