- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 182. Lucas, I've been craving something. Lucas: Oh yeah? What's that? Luna: Chapati. That soft, layered flatbread. I had it last week, and I want more. Lucas: Aww, chapati is amazing. Perfect topic today. Let's learn how to order chapati in Swahili. Luna: Yes, please. I need to be able to say 'I want chapati' without pointing. Lucas: That's easy. 'Nataka chapati.' Say it with me: Nataka chapati. Luna: Nataka chapati. Lucas: Exactly. Now if you want more than one, you ask 'Chapati ngapi?' — how many chapatis? Luna: Chapati ngapi? So if I want three, I'd say 'Chapati tatu, tafadhali.' Lucas: Perfect. Tatu is three. So 'Chapati tatu, tafadhali.' Means 'Three chapatis, please.' Luna: Chapati tatu, tafadhali. I love how straightforward it is. Lucas: For sure. Now, you'll want to ask the price. 'Bei gani ya chapati?' — what is the price of chapati? Luna: Bei gani ya chapati? So if they say 'Chapati ni shilingi elfu moja,' that means one chapati is one thousand shillings. Lucas: Right. 'Shilingi elfu moja.' So in a conversation, you'd say: 'Nataka chapati. Chapati tatu, tafadhali. Bei gani?' Luna: Let me try the full exchange. I'm at the market. I say: 'Nataka chapati. Chapati tatu, tafadhali.' Lucas: Good. Keep going. The seller says 'Bei gani?' — you already asked. Actually, you ask 'Bei gani?'. Luna: Oh right. 'Bei gani ya chapati?' And they say 'Chapati ni shilingi elfu moja.' So I say 'Asante sana.' Lucas: There you go. You just ordered three chapatis. Let's do a quick roleplay. I'll be the seller. Luna: Okay. Habari? Lucas: Nzuri. Unataka nini? Luna: Nataka chapati. Chapati tatu, tafadhali. Lucas: Sawa. Bei gani? — actually, you ask me the price. Luna: Oh! Bei gani ya chapati? Lucas: Chapati ni shilingi elfu moja. Tatu ni shilingi elfu tatu. Luna: Asante sana. Lucas: Karibu. You nailed it. Luna: This is so practical. I'm going to use this tomorrow. 'Nataka chapati na maharage.' Maharage means beans. Luna: Nataka chapati na maharage. Yum. Lucas: Great. So today we learned: 'Nataka chapati', 'Chapati ngapi?', 'Chapati tatu, tafadhali', 'Bei gani ya chapati?', and 'Chapati ni shilingi elfu moja'. Luna: That's a solid set.
