- 0:02Jesus said unto him, verily. I say unto thee that this night
- 0:07before the cock Crow, Thou shalt, deny me Thrice, hey,
- 0:13listeners. This is Nick from scripture
- 0:14Central. And today's podcast addresses,
- 0:17the question, why did Peter deny knowing Jesus?
- 0:26Following the institution of the Sacrament in the upper room at
- 0:29the Last Supper, Jesus offered several final instructions to
- 0:33his disciples while John devotes the most time and attention to
- 0:37these final intimate moments of Christ's life.
- 0:40All four gospels agree on what aspect of these final
- 0:43instructions. Jesus solemnly told his
- 0:46disciples that he would be seemingly abandoned that night
- 0:50by these chosen Apostles including Peter all ye shall be
- 0:53offended. Offended.
- 0:54Because of me this night, the Savior told them for it is
- 0:57written. I will Smite the shepherd and
- 0:59the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.
- 1:02Peter clearly distraught at the prospect exclaimed in response,
- 1:07though. All men shall be offended
- 1:09because of thee yet. Will I never be offended and
- 1:13John records him giving an even stronger response.
- 1:16I will lay down my life for thy sake.
- 1:20However, Jesus replied that even Peter would deny him three
- 1:23times. Before the night had ended this
- 1:26prophecy can be interpreted in many ways as can.
- 1:30The reason why Peter would have denied Jesus in such a crucial
- 1:33hour? Specifically some Latter-Day
- 1:36Saint, commentators have wondered whether Jesus was
- 1:38issuing a command to Peter. Eric D, Huntsman has explored
- 1:42this event as it is portrayed in all four gospels offering
- 1:46significant insights into what could have occurred on that
- 1:49fateful night. All four gospels use a form of
- 1:53the word Arnie, oh, my meaning repudiate disown or disclaim
- 1:58association with someone or something only Matthew, and Mark
- 2:02use the future tense of this verb.
- 2:04Herb, which has led to the most ambiguity over whether or not
- 2:08Jesus was issuing a command to Peter.
- 2:11However, as Huntsman observes, this verb is used here in a
- 2:15future, definite indicative form, which means the Jesus was
- 2:19for seeing or prophesying, what Peter would do.
- 2:23Well later, Greek texts could use this verb as a command.
- 2:26Such a usage is rare in the New Testament, Huntsman observes
- 2:31that the immediate context of Jesus pronouncement.
- 2:34A a prediction over a command since it was preceded by Jesus
- 2:39quotation of Zechariah 13 and his statement that this prophecy
- 2:43would be fulfilled. Furthermore, neither the Lucan
- 2:47nor the johannine accounts allow the verb for deny to be a future
- 2:51command in the earliest Greek manuscripts.
- 2:53Rendering the statement as the cock will not Crow this day
- 2:57until you have denied three times that you know me, the
- 3:00emphasis for Jesus future statement is on the rooster
- 3:03crowing. Thus, Luke and John appeared to
- 3:06classify Jesus statement as a prediction rather than a command
- 3:11giving Peter a future sign the roosters crow whereby.
- 3:14He may know that what Jesus said would be fulfilled,
- 3:19strengthening this prophetic interpretation Luke's account,
- 3:22adds an interesting detail. We're in Jesus first.
- 3:24Praise for Peter and tells him. Would Thou Art converted
- 3:28strengthen thy Brethren. However, the word translated in
- 3:31the King James version as converted literally Needs to
- 3:35turn back again. The instruction thus implies
- 3:38that Peter will repent in the near future ultimately as Peter
- 3:42watched the trial later that night he would deny knowing
- 3:45Jesus three times just as Jesus had said however as president
- 3:50Spencer W, Kimball observed, Peter never denied.
- 3:53The Divinity of Christ, he only denied his Association or
- 3:56acquaintance with the Christ, which is quite a different
- 3:59matter regardless of the circumstances.
- 4:02Peter was nonetheless saddened by his Ins.
- 4:04As soon as he heard the cock Crow and Peter remembered the
- 4:08word of Jesus, which said unto him before the cock Crow, Thou
- 4:12shalt deny me Thrice. And he went out and wept
- 4:15bitterly, regardless of whether or not Jesus.
- 4:19Originally intended to relay a command to Peter, or simply
- 4:22offer a prophetic statement, Peter had no business being
- 4:26outside, a caiaphas's palace in the late hours of this night, he
- 4:29had already made one mistake by cutting off the ear of the chief
- 4:33priests. It would not be a stretch to
- 4:36assume that he must have been very nervous and insecure and so
- 4:40may not have been thinking very clearly thus John W Welch notes
- 4:44that Peters reaction by the fire was probably not deliberate.
- 4:48He was truly sorry and wept bitterly over the situation and
- 4:53he realized that all of Jesus prophesies would come true.
- 4:57This undoubtedly included Jesus, many predictions of his coming
- 5:01crucifixion. Those were prophecies that Peter
- 5:04And the other Apostles had a very hard time initially
- 5:06believing could should, or would happen to their beloved savior
- 5:11in such a strenuous moment, it would be understandable for
- 5:14Peter to say what he did and also to have expressed such deep
- 5:18sorrow and regret. However, that is not the end of
- 5:22Peter story, Peter chosen to be the chief Apostle would grow
- 5:27from this experience in fulfillment of Jesus desire that
- 5:30when Peter had returned back, he took seriously the charge
- 5:34distribution. That his Brethren as one of the
- 5:36earliest witnesses to the resurrected Christ.
- 5:38Peter would testify of Jesus, salvific mission and boldness,
- 5:43humility, and love for the remainder of his days.
- 5:46Soon after Jesus, resurrection, Peter likewise showed his
- 5:50complete repentance, expressing his love for the Savior three
- 5:53times. Then back in Jerusalem Peter and
- 5:57John publicly healed. A man in the name of Jesus
- 6:00Christ of Nazareth, on the Eastern steps, leading up to the
- 6:03temple. For that Peter and John were
- 6:07taken before the Sanhedrin where they boldly testified of Christ
- 6:11withstood imprisonment and were delivered afterward.
- 6:16They never again flinched to testify openly and unequivocally
- 6:20of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ President.
- 6:24Kimball made the following observation regarding the
- 6:26character of Peter in light of this incident.
- 6:29I do not pretend to know what Peter's mental reactions were
- 6:32nor what compelled him to What he did that terrible night.
- 6:36But in light of his proven, bravery courage, great devotion,
- 6:41and Limitless love for the master.
- 6:43Could we not give him the benefit of the doubt and at
- 6:46least forgive him as his savior seems to have done?
- 6:49So fully, we likely will never know the full details of the
- 6:53terrible night when Jesus was tried and found guilty of death.
- 6:56We will likely never know the full breadth of dangers faced by
- 7:00each of Jesus, disciples, especially those who had
- 7:03followed Jesus. So close to the house of Jesus.
- 7:06Most embittered enemies. However, we can know how deep
- 7:11the love that Jesus and Peter had for one another Peters faith
- 7:15and priesthood power. Cannot be denied.
- 7:18Peter was a man of Faith President, Kimball observed.
- 7:21He healed, the Sick by, they're merely passing through his
- 7:24shadow. Prison Walls.
- 7:25Could not hold him because of him.
- 7:28The dead came back to life. He walked upon the Water soon
- 7:33after Jesus, resurrection. Correction and forgiveness of
- 7:35Peter, Peter was boldly preaching, the temple on the day
- 7:38of Pentecost and Healing The Sick.
- 7:40And he was also imprisoned for preaching that Jesus was
- 7:43resurrected. What should perhaps be the
- 7:46greatest lesson drawn from the denial stories?
- 7:49Is that Peter like all of us could make mistakes but through
- 7:54Jesus Christ, he could be fully redeemed rehabilitated and able
- 7:59to serve Faithfully Huntsman observed, although we will not
- 8:03necessarily be placed in such a dangerous circumstances.
- 8:06As was Peter, we can gain strength from this account of
- 8:09mortal weakness and complete repentance.
- 8:12We can likewise gain confidence as we.
- 8:14Face our own private struggles and seek to stay true to our
- 8:18baptismal covenants, to stand as Witnesses of God at all times.
- 8:22And in all things, and in all places that she may be in even
- 8:26until death that she may be redeemed of God, from all this
- 8:31Peter learned the treading cautiously or trying to be
- 8:33unnoticed as a follower of Christ was not an option.
- 8:37As John W Welch asks, how often do we deny Christ in our lives
- 8:42by saying less than we know. And Then we should we should
- 8:46never shy away from opportunities to be a witness
- 8:49for Christ. And we must be on guard for as
- 8:52may be said, we are closest to sin when we think we are
- 8:56farthest from it. Just as Peter, stood, as a
- 8:59strong witness of Christ for the remainder of his days following
- 9:03this event, we can be Witnesses of Christ.
- 9:05In all circumstances, we may be founded, gaining strength,
- 9:09through Peters, example, of continually relying on, Jesus
- 9:13love and atonement. Thank you for listening to this
