- 0:11Brandan: And welcome to the Seahawkers podcast.
- 0:14I'm your host, Brandan Schulze, and I am joined by my good buddy
- 0:17Clinton Bonner, as we are doing a Hard Knocks post episode recap.
- 0:23So hopefully everybody tuned in right when it was available on HBO if,
- 0:28i- if you're going to follow along with this conversation, because,
- 0:31we, we were right there at the beginning, and, here we go, buddy.
- 0:35Clinton: Blue Angels, the whole thing already, Brandan.
- 0:37Spoiler alert, the spoilers will spill out.
- 0:40So if you have, have not watched it yet, well, I don't know what to tell you.
- 0:42Get in.
- 0:43But Brandan, winners get sprinkles, and our Seattle Seahawks got
- 0:48a whole bunch of sprinkles.
- 0:49And I feel like the entire content community and all the 12s, all
- 0:52the Flockers, that was fun.
- 0:55And it was like, I was very kind of enamored with…
- 0:59I love storytelling, and I kind of like documentaries in general.
- 1:02But dude, what, 55 minutes, and there's probably three, four, five
- 1:06major storylines they pumped in there.
- 1:09And I'm excited to see what you thought was the most like, you know, maybe flashy
- 1:13or fun or exciting or, or net new for you.
- 1:16But dude, kudos to the people who put that all together because that's
- 1:20a lot to jam in one episode in one week of NFL, you know, pre-season.
- 1:25That was awesome.
- 1:26Brandan: They, they packed in, America With the Blue Angels and the Eagle.
- 1:32And the Bald Eagles.
- 1:32Yeah, yeah.
- 1:32they packed in, vomit.
- 1:35they packed in, Brady Russell getting peed on.
- 1:40Yeah.
- 1:40and, and they packed in a monster truck, like right at the beginning with
- 1:45Minotaur Derick Hall rolling in in, the truck that I think we all wish
- 1:48that we had when we were 10 years old.
- 1:50Clinton: The coolest part about that truck is that when you watch
- 1:52Derick Hall, you know, on whatever other stuff you might follow him, you
- 1:56realize he puts those things together.
- 1:58Like that's the cool part.
- 1:59Like he doesn't just go buy a cool truck.
- 2:02He works on trucks like that with his hands and his brain.
- 2:06So, kudos to Derick Hall, not just for the short shorts, because
- 2:10boy oh boy, Brandan, they were leaving little to the imagination.
- 2:14Brandan: The short shorts.
- 2:15I know, Lisa was excited-
- 2:17about the short shorts and Derick Hall.
- 2:19We've got our live executive producer, Ryan911, coming in with a 999 super chat.
- 2:25That was awesome.
- 2:26I need a get the F lined up hoodie.
- 2:29maybe, maybe we start there with our favorite lines because, I've
- 2:34got a question for you, Clinton.
- 2:35Clinton: Yes.
- 2:36Brandan: Where's my super suit?
- 2:38Clinton: Amazing.
- 2:39Love Leo breaking out, the Incredibles breaking out, you know, Samuel L.
- 2:43Jackson, Frozone.
- 2:45I gotta tell you, I wa- I wanna hear about your favorite line as
- 2:48well from the entire episode too.
- 2:50But for me, I w- I, I wr- I went into this, Brandan, really in
- 2:54love with the man Leo Williams.
- 2:56I exit this maybe more in love with the man Leo Williams.
- 3:00Didn't think it was possible.
- 3:01Did not think it was possible, Brandan, but here I am, 55 minutes later, being
- 3:04like, "That dude might be my favorite human being on the entire planet."
- 3:08And, I don't know what to say about it.
- 3:09Just he's- He's got, he's got it all.
- 3:12And there was other things he did in this episode that I
- 3:14thought were really cool too.
- 3:15But I love that line.
- 3:17What was your favorite line of, or most memorable for you?
- 3:19Brandan: Okay.
- 3:19My, my favorite part, it, it was actually a combination of lines between
- 3:24two people because you had, little Jack Macdonald in the office out looking
- 3:30over the football field, and his, he's saying to his mom, "Football."
- 3:34Clinton: Mm-hmm.
- 3:34" Brandan: Football."
- 3:35And then the very next line you hear is Sam Darnold saying- Sam … "Football."
- 3:39Clinton: Yeah.
- 3:40Great, great editing.
- 3:42Did you notice, so Jack Macdonald's, he's, you know, got a driver in the office.
- 3:46That's always great with a, with a, you know, the mom there,
- 3:49I think her name's Stephanie.
- 3:50and did you notice the jersey that little Jack Macdonald was rocking?
- 3:54Brandan: He was rocking, Mr.
- 3:56Witherspoon's jersey.
- 3:57Clinton: He sure was.
- 3:58That's right, a 21 jersey, right?
- 4:00So just these little droplets, just these little things, these little hints.
- 4:05That section where, where they really kind of just dialed
- 4:09in with, with Schneider, and then back to Spoon in his car.
- 4:12He's like, "You know, when you got a player like me," just, he's like-
- 4:17Just, just pay me.
- 4:17You know, just like, it was kind of simple, like just pay a great,
- 4:19unbelievable corner that could do all the things that I can go do.
- 4:23Do you, did you exit, we talked about it this, this week a bit in a
- 4:27couple different shows, did you exit this episode more confident, less
- 4:32confident that Spoon will get paid?
- 4:33And like on the Soon-O-Meter, what did, what did you think?
- 4:36Anything change for you?
- 4:38Brandan: I, I think I exited being confident.
- 4:41Because I, I don't think that they set up that storyline
- 4:44without it paying off, right?
- 4:46Yeah.
- 4:46Because th- they've kind of set it up now with, okay, they talked about the
- 4:50agent and having, and John Schneider being, oh, real concerned about the,
- 4:55that Spoon was wigged out by the fact that it went out in the media- Mm-hmm
- 4:59and felt like it was the, the organization trying to pressure him.
- 5:03And them going, "Hey, you gotta, you gotta get on the phone with the agent
- 5:07to say it wasn't coming from us."
- 5:08Then you had Spoon in the car.
- 5:10So I, I feel like it, it's getting the ball rolling to pay off
- 5:13before the end of Hard Knocks.
- 5:15Clinton: I like that.
- 5:16So what was it, five episode run, correct?
- 5:18We got four more.
- 5:19Brandan: It is five episodes, yeah.
- 5:20Clinton: Okay.
- 5:20So maybe by, by the time…
- 5:22'Cause it's one of those things where if there's a real arc, you
- 5:25don't do this in like episode five.
- 5:28You take care of it somewhere like three and a half, four, so you can
- 5:32like continue the, continue the Spoon story and the arc into the season
- 5:36without worry hanging over you.
- 5:37You know, like you watch a superhero movie, the last scene is
- 5:40not the, him beating the villain.
- 5:43There's, there's, they beat the villain and then there's some conclusion
- 5:45where, where storylines wrap up.
- 5:47So this is Hollywood after all, Brandan, so three and a half weeks in or so,
- 5:53Spoon will be signed, put in the books.
- 5:55Brandan: I, I do feel like, yeah, there's a story to be told there and,
- 5:58and the fact that they started with that.
- 6:00Just the idea too of what a great, thing for Hard Knocks, and
- 6:04appreciate Michael Knight coming in with the $10 Super Chat.
- 6:07But-
- 6:07Clinton: Yes,
- 6:07Brandan: thank you … what a, what a great thing for Hard Knocks.
- 6:09Because so much in the past- We get bad teams.
- 6:13Yeah.
- 6:13And now we get the Super Bowl champions.
- 6:15And so we get to see what it's like.
- 6:18A- and it, and it started off in the episode, right?
- 6:20With the, the ring ceremony, and gosh, the, the frigging rings dropping down
- 6:24from the ceiling- … so that everybody could get theirs all at the same time.
- 6:28and, that was almost as wild as Derick Hall's truck.
- 6:33Clinton: Almost.
- 6:33I love the very, very beginning, with the rings.
- 6:36We knew they came down from the ceiling.
- 6:38We, we, you know, saw that on social media previously.
- 6:41What I loved was, I like a little bit buzzed John Schneider.
- 6:45I'm a fan of a little bit buzzed John Schneider.
- 6:46He gets l- a little loose, and you can see in the very beginning, I
- 6:49think he's talking to Kupp, 'cause Cooper already saw the ring, 'cause I
- 6:53think he was like, 'cause he's in…
- 6:54He's at…
- 6:55Well, Cooper's at everything.
- 6:56Cooper's at Taylor Swift's wedding.
- 6:57Cooper is a coach.
- 6:58And Cooper apparently helped design the ring with De Beers.
- 7:02But all these things, but you get John a little bit loose.
- 7:05You see he's got a glass of beer, very fancy Art Deco glass of beer, by the way.
- 7:09Very nice.
- 7:10Very classy.
- 7:11but you get John a little bit loose.
- 7:14You know, you can hear a little bit of a slur to his speech,
- 7:16and you can see he's having fun.
- 7:18And then you get Mike with the little bit of scotch, nice and neat, classy.
- 7:22And then you see John back up on the stage, and he's, he's cheers, and while
- 7:25the, while everybody's celebrating the, the Super Bowl, so the, the rings.
- 7:29That was a cool start, and it was…
- 7:31One, one other thing I think that also you mentioned, like, we got bad
- 7:35teams and some bad organizations in years past with, with Hard Knocks.
- 7:40In general, I think the Seattle organization looks great.
- 7:45You know, not only are they Super Bowl champions, but it j- like, the
- 7:48facilities, the VMAX, the way, the setting, the team, the coach, the
- 7:53smarts, the, the fired-upness of the assistant coaches, the, the depth of
- 7:58some of the veterans on this team.
- 8:00Like, the holistic picture so far is, like, this is an
- 8:04extremely well organization.
- 8:06And while some things in Hollywood are, you know, kind of fan fiction, Brandan,
- 8:10I don't think that one is actually…
- 8:12They don't gotta stretch to be like, "This is a very well-run organization."
- 8:15Brandan: Yeah.
- 8:15And I think that's gotta be one of the big takeaways to start things off, right?
- 8:20It was, that's, it, just the approach and, and the way of building it.
- 8:26we, we, we've gotten little bits here and there through the press conferences,
- 8:31through the reporting of, of, what it sounds like behind the scenes.
- 8:37But then, you know, the cameras take us in to…
- 8:39You know, we get to see the, the PowerPoint up on the, up on
- 8:43the screen of, of how they wanna do things and, and talking about…
- 8:47Now, I wasn't super happy that they let loose Mike Macdonald's secret
- 8:51sauce and, and him quoting the, the secret sauce is connection.
- 8:56'Cause I, I really do think that that's what it is.
- 8:59And,- A- and, and so I think he's onto something there.
- 9:03So, beyond all that I think that one of the cooler things for me too
- 9:09was this was the first time that we got to see Coach Mike with just
- 9:14one-on-one with individual players- Mm
- 9:16and seeing how those types of interactions go.
- 9:20Clinton: Yeah.
- 9:21I mean, and it's, it's…
- 9:23He seems a bit more, even more natural in the one-on-one settings, where he,
- 9:26where he s- seems to be probably still finding his voice as a head coach.
- 9:30And I love when he's in front of the full room, he's…
- 9:33And he knows it, but he's got a little bit of Michael Scott to
- 9:36him, but in an endearing way.
- 9:38But he's a, he's an insanely competent Michael Scott.
- 9:41Like, take all the great things- Sure … that Michael Scott is as a caring human
- 9:45being for the humans he cares for, right?
- 9:47In a fictional show.
- 9:48But, but he's got that awkwardness, and he leans into that awkwardness
- 9:52in front of a, a larger crowd.
- 9:54One-on-one, you know, he's, he's got, he puts on the, the
- 9:58psychology hat strongly, right?
- 10:00And really kind of keeps fo- the team and the players individually seemingly
- 10:05focused on what they need to focus on.
- 10:07I think the Nick Emmanwori piece was pretty cool.
- 10:11It's nice that, like, Mike could have a conversation like that in
- 10:15front of cameras and all, all that jazz, but he, like, to me, he didn't
- 10:20have to go say too much to Nick.
- 10:23He actually could be like, "Well, what do you think I'm gonna say?"
- 10:26Like, what, that, "You've heard this before.
- 10:27What do you think I'm gonna say here?"
- 10:29And, and that was kind of neat.
- 10:31It w- I liked that as well, Brandan.
- 10:33So don't know if you had more about his kind of psychology
- 10:36hat, or I also wanted to ask you about, did anything concern you?
- 10:41I just brought, brought up Nick Emmanwori.
- 10:42Any concerns about that piece or, or anything else we saw in the episode?
- 10:47Brandan: I, the, I suppose the concern is just over, around the concern that,
- 10:53how much they, emphasis they put on Nick Emmanwori being- Mm-hmm …
- 10:58an important part of that defense.
- 10:59We got J Scott AZ in chat saying, "In a way, his philosophy seems the
- 11:04opposite of the do your job idea."
- 11:06Mm.
- 11:06"Do your job feels so individual focused."
- 11:09And, the one thing that I, I liked from Mike with that interaction
- 11:13with Nick Emmanwori was him saying, you know, "The number one thing is
- 11:18what's best for you and the team."
- 11:19Clinton: Mm-hmm.
- 11:20Brandan: And that was the quote that I took away from that.
- 11:22the, the next thing was, h- how even, you got to see even
- 11:29Coach Mike taking or having, w- taking receipts, right?
- 11:32The, the- Yeah … Rex Ryan bit and- Yep … and him saying, "This new
- 11:36hotshot coordinator is terrible," and how that stuck with him, and, yeah.
- 11:41The, that's, he's even kept taking note of that and how he's
- 11:45turned Rex Ryan around from that.
- 11:46Clinton: Yeah.
- 11:47I, I do…
- 11:47It's nice because you, you don't really get even that side of Mike
- 11:50too often or think that he's,…
- 11:53You know, we all have a bit of pettiness, and, and maybe that's pettiness, maybe
- 11:56it's not, but just that I'm gonna keep that in my little locker and keep
- 11:59that chip on my shoulder type thing.
- 12:01And, you know, for Mike at this point, after a…
- 12:04I mean, he, he's so young, and yet he has very little, in my
- 12:08opinion, to prove as an NFL coach, which has gotta be his own battle.
- 12:12You know, like- But I think he's wired, extraordinarily well to not only lead
- 12:17the men in that room and, and everybody in the, in the organization, but to
- 12:21keep challenging himself in a way, too.
- 12:23You know?
- 12:24I think these-- He, while he's talking about the '91 Bulls, which is cool, and
- 12:30about how Phil Jackson got basically Michael Jordan to spread the ball around
- 12:34or the team to s- to stop relying on Jordan to dump 50 every mon- every
- 12:37night, and they got better as a team.
- 12:39But in the back of my head, I'm like, I understand the point of like, yeah,
- 12:43we wanna go get better, but we were 17 and 3 last year, and I didn't
- 12:48feel like there was a Michael Jordan.
- 12:50It felt like, to me, last year was more like, well, that was kinda
- 12:53like the '91 Bulls already somehow.
- 12:55Right.
- 12:56So maybe are we…
- 12:57Is the point, well, we could just march on to the '92, '93 portion of this.
- 13:02I, I was kind of tussling with that.
- 13:02That was more
- 13:03Brandan: my takeaway of it, is just that importance of that was
- 13:07what got them there the first time- Mm … and now this is what we need
- 13:10to continue to go on to, to do the two-peat, three-peat, type thing.
- 13:15So y- that was definitely more of my takeaway with it.
- 13:17And Amy Helms in chat saying, "Didn't feel as much like receipts as I don't want to
- 13:21be the guy that cares about that anymore."
- 13:23Because yeah, th- it was one of the things that we heard from Mike,
- 13:25too, is that he was that guy- Yeah
- 13:31Clinton: Now
- 13:31Brandan: very- He has moved on from that.
- 13:32Clinton: Yeah, very, very good point there, Amy.
- 13:34We're gonna dissect that further.
- 13:35You're, you're, you ain't wrong, a- as we'd say.
- 13:38So, so that was…
- 13:39So the Emmanwori part was interesting to me as well, not just the
- 13:42conversation, but the clear…
- 13:44And again, you know, HBO is gonna capture what they capture and
- 13:47they're gonna create narratives.
- 13:48That's what documentaries do.
- 13:50You leave out way, way more than you put in.
- 13:52That's just the way it goes.
- 13:54But he still said what he said about, like, when he's sitting around
- 13:57the couch being like, "Hey, if we don't have Nick, he's a pretty,
- 14:00pretty big freaking loss, right?"
- 14:02And he has to look around and be like, "Right?"
- 14:03You know?
- 14:03So interesting, and, you know, h- hopefully Nick is just making
- 14:08his way back easily to week one.
- 14:10But I mean, dude, it's August 4th right now, and we play a game in 35 days.
- 14:17So- Is
- 14:17Brandan: that right?
- 14:18Clinton: I, I just…
- 14:19What, September 9, right?
- 14:20So-
- 14:20Brandan: Yeah
- 14:20… Clinton: I just wonder if he'll be actually ready if
- 14:24he's scooting about a week ago.
- 14:25It, it seems a little bit, it seems a little unreasonable to think
- 14:30he'll be out there full speed if last week he was scooting around.
- 14:34Brandan: Yeah.
- 14:34Well, that'll be part of the storyline too.
- 14:36So,- Sure … we'll get to see how, how that continues to go.
- 14:39Michael Knight in chat saying, "I even, I have even less doubt now.
- 14:43We are building a dynasty based solely on the quality of brass we have.
- 14:47Hopefully, the new ownership team stays out of the building."
- 14:51yes, we, we can, we can hope that, that it just continues
- 14:54to build on last season.
- 14:56DJ Nichols saying, "More than the talent on the team, Mike's
- 15:00whole philosophy has me delusional that we really can repeat."
- 15:03That, I, y- and yeah, I don't think it's delusion to, to think that it can,
- 15:07to think that we can't repeat.
- 15:10Marlon85 saying, "Do you think a deal has been done, but
- 15:13waiting to make a storyline?"
- 15:15I, I think the- Maybe … I don't think that they would be able to
- 15:19keep that under wraps, Marlon.
- 15:21But I think that they probably know enough between the two sides that,
- 15:29that it has to resolve itself, I think, by the start of the season.
- 15:32I, I think that I just don't know if they would feature it that much if both
- 15:38sides don't have that sense that there's going to be a resolution at some point.
- 15:42Clinton: Mm-hmm.
- 15:43Yeah.
- 15:43I-
- 15:43Brandan: And that's more where I was going with it, not, not necessarily that I, I
- 15:46think that they, they're keeping it under wraps only to resolve it on the show.
- 15:51Clinton: Well, and it's also not that big of a surprise.
- 15:54Like, it's going to happen.
- 15:55He's going to get, he's going to get paid.
- 15:57And you c- And the, the nice part from this, the last thing I'd say about
- 16:00Spoon is, you know, he's not sitting there with a, with a grump on his face.
- 16:05You know, he's there, he's very, very engaged, he's having fun, he's barking,
- 16:10he's talking, you know, talking his talk, and he's just, he's out there smiling.
- 16:15You know, so he's not sitting there like, you know, "Woe is me, I haven't gotten
- 16:18my, my $150 million extension yet."
- 16:21He knows it's coming, which, which I think is really cool.
- 16:23So Brandan, there was, you know, let's see.
- 16:26There was a kind of a, there was a segment on Sam, there was a segment on
- 16:30Eman, there was a segment on, Spoon.
- 16:34one player and room we haven't talked about yet at all, we
- 16:38haven't talked running backs yet.
- 16:40What'd you think about the running backs segment in general, and some
- 16:44of the shine that they were clearly putting on JD, or, you know, JP,
- 16:49very, very early in his career?
- 16:51Brandan: Yeah, we got to see senior offensive assistants and running
- 16:54backs coach Thomas Hammock, leading the meeting room there,
- 16:58and, that was interesting.
- 16:59I, I think, we had some- Yeah, the F
- 17:01Clinton: bomb Thomas, the F bomb Hammock.
- 17:02Brandan: Yeah, he- Thomas the F bomb Hammock, yes.
- 17:04He likes that word.
- 17:04no, no, no censor ship, on HBO, so, you get it all.
- 17:09And yeah, so we didn't get to hear from Jadarian Price, but we got to hear from
- 17:17all of the teammates, we even got to hear a little bit from the coaches.
- 17:20We got to see Coach Hamm saying, that, he doesn't talk much,
- 17:24but, that he's very competitive.
- 17:26Mm-hmm.
- 17:26We got to see Spoon and Byron Murphy, both, being impressed
- 17:32with, with Jadarian Price.
- 17:34We got to see him catching passes downfield.
- 17:37So, yeah, he was well featured despite not being micd up.
- 17:41Clinton: Yeah.
- 17:42well said.
- 17:44The, the Price stuff, of all the things you just mentioned, you
- 17:48know, the footage is gorgeous.
- 17:50He's a- carved out of marble, he's absolutely jacked.
- 17:54he did, he did speak a little bit, right?
- 17:55He had, like, a little segment where he was talking off-camera, like one-to-one.
- 17:58He did.
- 17:59Okay.
- 17:59He was, like, in the facility.
- 18:01and extremely, extremely smart dude, coming from Notre Dame.
- 18:06And so to go from Notre Dame, which is very, very well run in, from a college
- 18:10football sense, to the Seahawks, very well run, he seems very
- 18:14grateful to be there, which I think is amazing and, and very cool to see.
- 18:18The Byron Murphy stuff, when he's talking about- Price's cutback ability.
- 18:23Like to me, that's the biggest blossoming, like, okay cool.
- 18:27First of all, Murphy knows a lot about stopping the run in the NFL.
- 18:31A lot, a lot, a lot.
- 18:33And when he can spot a talent that could cut back a field and go back against
- 18:38the grain, you know, okay, so they're pr- whatever, they're running right,
- 18:41and, and the lane, and it overshifts and he, he has to break it back left
- 18:44and, you know, bounce it around the edge, or take it back through the,
- 18:47the three or something like that.
- 18:49But to hear Murphy be like, "Yeah, the way he moves when he, when he wants to
- 18:53cut it back against the grain," he's like, he's like, "That's something."
- 18:56So that got me excited, Brandan, because again, Murphy's seen a lot,
- 19:00and this goes back to his Texas days.
- 19:02He played high, high level college football, and and
- 19:06he's been on a, a heck of a line.
- 19:08So that part in particular, mixed with the footage, I was like, oh man, I think,
- 19:12I think Price's stock in general, like fantasy football stock and all that
- 19:16stuff, I guarantee you his stock as a, oh man, he's, he might be the, the,
- 19:20the starter, is rising as we speak.
- 19:23Brandan: Yeah.
- 19:24It, it'll be interesting to see if they give us any more shots of
- 19:28the board and the general manager.
- 19:29I don't know if it was, in John Schneider's office, but I think it was.
- 19:33Clinton: Right, right,
- 19:33Brandan: when they had the blank names.
- 19:35Yeah Of, of the board that they had all the names, and everything was blurred
- 19:38out, but obviously they were pointing at the running back where it was about
- 19:42five deep, and you had one pushed in a little bit, which I have to assume was
- 19:47Zach Charbonnet because he's injured.
- 19:49Mm.
- 19:49And so, you know, who, how do you know if there's, a couple names
- 19:53above, or you, you could see there was a couple names above there, and you
- 19:57could see in the quarterback's area too where it was, you had one name-
- 20:01One … and then you had two side by
- 20:03Clinton: side.
- 20:03One, two.
- 20:03Yep, yep, yep.
- 20:04So- You noticed that too, right?
- 20:06Very good.
- 20:07I, I- Trying to
- 20:08Brandan: pick up as much as I can because-
- 20:09Clinton: I know …
- 20:09Brandan: you know, th-
- 20:10Clinton: Oh no, they, hey, the cameras are there, you know, for us Matlocks.
- 20:13Now the fu- I have to admit, when you just said what you said, that
- 20:16the cameras were, the cameras blurred the names, I didn't realize that.
- 20:21I was like, oh, they're just all blank and they're setting them up for later.
- 20:24I liter- I literally thought that.
- 20:26That's what I thought, and then like, of course, they just
- 20:28blurred the names, dum-dum.
- 20:29So that's on me.
- 20:31that's, that, that's me.
- 20:33That's dumb.
- 20:34But, that, what you said makes a lot of sense, 'cause that was true, but the
- 20:37quarterback part was interesting, right?
- 20:39Yeah.
- 20:39Just like, okay, you know.
- 20:40So is there a battle at two?
- 20:42And-
- 20:43Brandan: Well, we heard there was a battle at two.
- 20:44Clinton: Correct
- 20:45Brandan: Based off of what, Ian Rapoport's reporting, right?
- 20:48And we kinda made fun of it a little bit.
- 20:50Well, of course, you know, the, the two quarterbacks- Right … behind
- 20:53Sam are gonna be battling.
- 20:54But when you see the names side by side, it does, I think- Give
- 20:59that maybe a little more…
- 21:01It, it gives the reporting a little bit more…
- 21:03There, there's more to it- Yeah … than just the obviousness of it.
- 21:07Clinton: Well, and the thing with this team is, we talk about
- 21:10it a lot, it's a deep roster.
- 21:12So when you get down to 53 in your practice squad, and who can you sneak
- 21:15to the practice squad, look, keeping three quarterbacks, it, it stops
- 21:20you from keeping one other dude, who might be Emmanuel Henderson, right?
- 21:24If Cody White's the…
- 21:25So just guys like that that are, like, solid.
- 21:28so that part's very interesting to me too, because whatever, I think A- Adams
- 21:32Do Better was the guy who, like, had these trade ideas and was like, "Trade Milroe."
- 21:37It's like, no, I, I think the way more likely scenario, if they were to make
- 21:41a trade, would be if Milroe progresses the way he seems to be, would be one
- 21:48quarterback is going to get hurt.
- 21:49I hate to say it, and I'm not saying a Seahawks quarterback.
- 21:51I mean, a quarterback in the NFL is gonna get hurt in the next four weeks.
- 21:54Brandan: Right.
- 21:54Clinton: And you, if, if Milroe is ready to take over that true two
- 21:57spot, well, then you trade Drew.
- 21:59You say, "Drew, go ahead.
- 22:00Go, go play football."
- 22:01Go be a
- 22:01Brandan: number one somewhere.
- 22:02Clinton: Go be a- Yeah
- 22:02go play.
- 22:03Go throw the ball around, dude.
- 22:04You know you can.
- 22:05And you give him a crack to go do that, and you probably recoup
- 22:07a third or a fourth, because of the, because of the need.
- 22:11Not, not that he would get that in Nev- normally, but in that situation,
- 22:14he might, he might garner that.
- 22:16especially if it's a team that feels that they could compete or if it's,
- 22:19like, the quarterback's out for six weeks, not the full year type thing.
- 22:23Stuff happens.
- 22:24So it'll just be interesting to watch- Well, we play the Cowboys on
- 22:28the 15th, I think, is the first game.
- 22:30How much Milroe we see, how progressed he is.
- 22:33But I mean, he, we didn't get a lot of him in, in, in Hard Knocks.
- 22:36I know we're reviewing that now, but we got a lot of Milroe this last past
- 22:39week, and he does look markedly better, so certainly something to watch.
- 22:43Brandan: Yeah.
- 22:43It'll be interesting if we get a little more depth at the, the
- 22:47quarterback battle- Mm-hmm … as we go throughout, the, the Hard Knocks.
- 22:51You know, one thing we haven't talked about yet was what was featured at the
- 22:54end, Clinton, and that was the fighting.
- 22:57Clinton: Yeah,
- 22:57Brandan: yeah.
- 22:57We got some fighting.
- 22:59Clinton: I didn't mind it.
- 22:59You know, especially as you watch…
- 23:02I don't think Mike, more importantly, like what do I mind?
- 23:04It's like, oh, cool.
- 23:06Yeah, dude.
- 23:06but more importantly, Mike Macdonald didn't mind it either.
- 23:10He didn't like some of the cheap stuff.
- 23:12He didn't like- Yeah … some of the kinda name-calling stuff, and he called it out.
- 23:14Brandan: And the stuff that he didn't like, he- He
- 23:15Clinton: called out directly
- 23:16Brandan: yeah, he called it out and
- 23:18- Clinton: Right, right
- 23:18… Brandan: and, yeah, tried
- 23:19Clinton: to fix the
- 23:19Brandan: issue.
- 23:20But,
- 23:20Clinton: but, or/and as it was starting to simmer, it's because Mike's
- 23:25like, "Hey, we're, we're losing this…
- 23:27We're losing 15-1."
- 23:28He's like, "We're losing 16-1," the way, whatever the however they keep
- 23:31their scoring mechanism- Mm … like play by play, or maybe it's series
- 23:34by series, probably play by play.
- 23:36But he's like, he's like, "Hey, defense, you're getting your ass handed to you
- 23:40by the offense over and over and over."
- 23:43I mean, you know, in, in a hockey game, you go down 2-0, 3-0 and you're
- 23:46getting pushed around, usually you're…
- 23:49Somebody drops the gloves.
- 23:50You try to stimulate something, and you try to ma- you lit-
- 23:55literally try to manufacture something to s- create a spark.
- 23:59It's no different.
- 24:00luckily, you know, no one's getting hurt and stuff like that.
- 24:03I do- I personally don't mind the fighting whatsoever.
- 24:06you know, a- and then if they wanna get mad at Hall for
- 24:08ripping a guy down from the back-
- 24:09Brandan: From behind, yeah
- 24:10… Clinton: from Cable do.
- 24:11don't hurt anybody, that, that's all.
- 24:13But, but the chippiness I think is very, very healthy in my opinion.
- 24:17Brandan: Yeah.
- 24:18I, I think that, well, and that's something that we see in every
- 24:21training camp, I- Yeah … feel like.
- 24:23I haven't watched Hard Knocks, but I have to imagine that's not the first
- 24:26time that a fight has been featured.
- 24:28Clinton: Didn't, didn't Metcalf swing a helmet a couple of years ago?
- 24:31Like, hard.
- 24:31Brandan: Oh, yeah.
- 24:31Yeah.
- 24:32it- that was at a training camp that I think I was even at.
- 24:35It, that seemed, yeah, more brutal than even what we saw here, so.
- 24:39Clinton: Well, yeah, 'cause he was using a weapon.
- 24:41Right.
- 24:42Yes.
- 24:42Helmets hurt, man.
- 24:43Brandan: So yeah, Derick Hall just, going after Cable do from behind.
- 24:47But, yeah, and that, that felt like the more serious one because
- 24:52it was, like, Connor O'Toole and Bobby Horton getting into it.
- 24:55Yeah.
- 24:55And I'm like, "Okay, well, if these guys, fight, okay."
- 25:00But, yeah, it got, a little more serious I felt like with,
- 25:04Derick Hall getting into it.
- 25:06Clinton: Yeah, I agree.
- 25:07and then, and then the more playful side of it after practice, they show the
- 25:11hugging and all that stuff, which was fun.
- 25:13But how about Derick Hall trying to wrestle Leo Williams- Yes
- 25:16and Leo Williams being like, what'd he call him?
- 25:20Unc.
- 25:20He called himself Unc.
- 25:21Yeah.
- 25:21He's like, "Nah," he has, he has, like, that Unc strength.
- 25:24I mean, imagine how strong Derick Hall is 'cause I can tell you, he's really strong.
- 25:27You know, he's like this- He's really strong.
- 25:28He's really
- 25:28Brandan: strong.
- 25:28He has, he has, like, the long arm leverage too.
- 25:31Clinton: Yes.
- 25:32Brandan: Yeah.
- 25:32And Leo still,- Still- … took it over and took him down.
- 25:35Clinton: Yeah, that was another reason Leo was my favorite.
- 25:37But still,
- 25:37Brandan: with that too, I'm thinking, "Oh, please don't get hurt.
- 25:39Please don't get hurt."
- 25:40Right.
- 25:40Of
- 25:40Clinton: course.
- 25:41But…
- 25:41Yeah, of, of…
- 25:42Absolutely.
- 25:43Don't get hurt.
- 25:44and luckily just whatever the…
- 25:45It was a clean takedown by Leo, but just goes to show you
- 25:49freaking Leo's absolute- Yeah
- 25:51crazy, crazy strength.
- 25:53yeah, I mean, man.
- 25:54So I get to l- we get the Fro Zone.
- 25:56Oh, how about one last, one last…
- 25:57Well, we've got Sam.
- 25:58Mm-hmm.
- 25:58Anything about Sam.
- 26:00Spinning the ball, it looks beautiful.
- 26:02It's in slow motion, how could it not look good?
- 26:04but any takeaways from our quarterback?
- 26:09Brandan: Man, he just…
- 26:11Well, I think the one quote that stood out was him having to remind himself
- 26:19or, or being reminded that, yeah, we, we won the Super Bowl, and I kind
- 26:23of love that about him, that he…
- 26:25It didn't stick with him like, like, oh, going into the season, "Well, hey, now
- 26:30I'm, I'm Super Bowl champion Sam Darnold."
- 26:32he obviously doesn't think that because it, it j- seems like Sam hasn't
- 26:38changed because of, of, you know, the team going the distance last year.
- 26:44Clinton: I, I think so, too.
- 26:45You know, he see- he seems extremely well-grounded and kind of satisfied.
- 26:50I'm not saying he's not hungry and trying to get better every day,
- 26:52but, like, not that like, "Ooh, I've arrived, so I can stop," but
- 26:57more like, "I've, I'm here, and I'm, and I'm at a good spot," you know?
- 27:02He seems, he seems settled in that way, and I mean that in a
- 27:04positive way, not the negative way.
- 27:06Brandan: Now are you concerned, though, that he dropped the ring?
- 27:10Clinton: Not really.
- 27:11It was tricky.
- 27:11It came from the ceiling, so I'm not, I'm not too concerned, right?
- 27:14So, you know, his more important ring with the fiancée that became the
- 27:18wife, successful, so all, all good.
- 27:20But yeah, that was…
- 27:21The, the piece for Sam that I thought was a little bit constructed
- 27:25by the HBO gods was when they jammed the LeBron stuff in there.
- 27:29They j- you know, like, I know LeBron's news.
- 27:31He's the biggest basketball player in the world.
- 27:32I get all that.
- 27:33But when they're talking about like, and Sam says, "Oh, man,"
- 27:36the people are getting on him 'cause he went to Philadelphia,
- 27:38and Philadelphia's a good team.
- 27:39Brandan: Oh.
- 27:40Clinton: I was like, "Sam, are you projecting a little bit,
- 27:42like, a little, a little bit?
- 27:43Is there some projection here that you, you're manifesting?"
- 27:46I thought-
- 27:46Brandan: He thinks he's LeBron.
- 27:47Yeah.
- 27:47That obviously- … that's what Sam's there.
- 27:49Clearly.
- 27:50Clinton: He's, well,
- 27:50Brandan: they had- He's, he's definitely directly comparing
- 27:52himself to LeBron James.
- 27:53Clinton: Well, they had the goat at the beginning when Brady Russell got, got
- 27:56peed on, and Brady Russell seems like fun.
- 27:59One dude you want at a wedding with you- Of course
- 28:00Brandan: he would be the one to pick up the goat.
- 28:02Clinton: Exactly.
- 28:03" Brandan: Oh, I can pick him up?"
- 28:03Clinton: Exactly.
- 28:04"Oh, it's a, it's a full petting zoo?
- 28:06That means I can pick the goat up?"
- 28:08You know, you're…
- 28:08He's like, like Sloth.
- 28:09Like, you're, "You're gonna live with us now," right?
- 28:12It's like, by the way, the end of "Goonies," what, what are the cops doing?
- 28:15There's a billion dollars floating away slowly, slowly.
- 28:20They're like, "Ah, just don't worry about the, the pirate ship
- 28:22with billions of dollars in gold."
- 28:24And then they're gonna let Chunk and family just take home Sloth.
- 28:28It's just like, you, you're, you're gonna live with us now.
- 28:30But Sloth
- 28:31Brandan: is a grown adult.
- 28:32He can decide who he wants to live with.
- 28:34He, and where he wants to-
- 28:34Clinton: Man, there are statutes that I think, I don't, I don't know.
- 28:38If we have any Esquires in the crowd, I, I'm not sure that Sloth
- 28:41is, can make those decisions.
- 28:42I love Sloth, but we might have gotten off the rails here, Brandan, possibly.
- 28:46Brandan: Yeah, we, we can blame it on Brady Russell because,-
- 28:50between the goat and him dancing, at the start of the meeting,
- 28:54yeah, DJ Nichols in chat saying, "Brady Russell might just
- 28:57be this generation's Luke Wilson."
- 28:59Clinton: Right,
- 28:59Brandan: yeah.
- 29:00And, I think that's true.
- 29:01Clinton: Yeah, very, very fun.
- 29:02I guess the last thing for me that came through, Brandan, was-
- 29:05We started calling Cooper Kupp, you know, Coach Kupp last year.
- 29:09Mm-hmm.
- 29:09And it's like, okay, it seems like, it seems like this is what's happening.
- 29:13And oh, by the way, people say this is what's happening that are in the room.
- 29:16Right.
- 29:17Any impressions?
- 29:18Brandan: I need to go back and watch that scene, or maybe you can break
- 29:20it down fully, because that was one of the things that I- it didn't fully
- 29:25hit me e- exactly what was happening between him and Coach Mike and Coop
- 29:30saying something, and then like-
- 29:32Clinton: Yeah,
- 29:32Brandan: but he celebrated
- 29:33Mike Macdonald putting his hands in the air.
- 29:34I, I, I feel like that's one that I need to go back and diagnose
- 29:37what happened, but maybe you saw.
- 29:38Clinton: I mean, it's just, I mean, Mike says s- very simply like,
- 29:42"Oh, they were under center the whole time," something like that.
- 29:44Something about them just being under center.
- 29:46So I think my, my brain went to that there was a concept that
- 29:52they can run under center, maybe that last year or some form of it.
- 29:57They were, they were like, "We, we can't do that from under center."
- 30:00Like that was the, that's what I think was happening.
- 30:02Like, "Oh man, they're doing it from under center."
- 30:04So I m- I, I don't know.
- 30:05Maybe, maybe- Yeah … Kupp was showing them something.
- 30:07Also, it didn't exactly seem in that moment that Kupp actually did
- 30:11anything in that particular scene.
- 30:13It seemed like Mike thought about it, and then Kupp was like, you know, "You're
- 30:16welcome," but I don't think he meant it.
- 30:18I think that was more HBO magic in my opinion.
- 30:20Mm-hmm.
- 30:21Okay.
- 30:21I really don't think that was something that Cooper magically unlocked.
- 30:24I think HBO just wanted to make it look that way.
- 30:26That was my take.
- 30:27Brandan: Okay.
- 30:27All right.
- 30:27Well, it, it was, it was a scene where I, I felt like I was missing
- 30:31something, and so, yeah.
- 30:34Clinton: I think they were trying to make a little bit of a storyline that
- 30:37maybe wasn't exactly, there in that moment, which is what documentaries do.
- 30:42But I, but the idea of Kupp being that player coach, and whenever
- 30:47this contract is up, the fact that he is from Washington, I mean, I
- 30:51think he could literally just stay.
- 30:54Like, okay, like you now run the wide receiver room, or you're now,
- 30:57you know, assistant, OC or heck, who knows what happens, right?
- 31:02So after Fleury becomes a, a head coach after we win another Super Bowl, maybe-
- 31:06Brandan: Yeah, don't let him leave like he left, let KJ Wright leave.
- 31:09That's-
- 31:09Clinton: Exactly.
- 31:10Exactly
- 31:10… Brandan: Ryan911 saying, "I'm a long time fan of Cooper Kupp since last year-"
- 31:14which I assume was his first year in the league."
- 31:17That it's really the only time that matters.
- 31:19Whistle Jacket, Lisa in chat, "Giving the googly eyes to the Minotaur."
- 31:24Clinton: Yeah.
- 31:25Everything about the short shorts, the, the, the Ford.
- 31:28Was it a Ford?
- 31:28I don't even know.
- 31:29The, the, whatever the big ass truck he had, and also he was fun.
- 31:32You know, he was fun.
- 31:33They showed, by the way, last thing for me, they showed shadow boxing and
- 31:36I still think shadow boxing's stupid.
- 31:38It doesn't, like-
- 31:38Brandan: I don't, I don't understand the moves.
- 31:40- I
- 31:41Clinton: don't get it.
- 31:41Brandan: Yeah.
- 31:42Clinton: It's just like, well, you gotta like-
- 31:43Brandan: I need a breakdown.
- 31:44Clinton: I don't.
- 31:44Brandan: Explain it to me.
- 31:45Clinton: Break it down.
- 31:45I don't.
- 31:46I don't.
- 31:46I wanna ignore it and just, if they like doing it and it's
- 31:49brotherly love to them, fine.
- 31:51But I'm just like, well, I don't, I don't get it.
- 31:54I wanna,
- 31:55Brandan: I wanna get into the competition.
- 31:56That's-
- 31:56Clinton: I don't.
- 31:57I don't.
- 31:58They can have it.
- 31:58That's- It's cool.
- 32:00Brandan: All right.
- 32:01Well, a big thanks to everybody who tuned in to us live after the show.
- 32:07It, it was fun.
- 32:07Maybe we'll do this maybe weekly.
- 32:09We'll have to see how it goes.
- 32:11Clinton: I mean, I'm available on Tuesdays.
- 32:12I don't know about you, so Tuesdays are great.
- 32:14Brandan: I'm gonna be watching the show anyway, and now I feel like it's, it's
- 32:17gotta be appointment television for me.
- 32:19Now it's- It's our Seahawks.
- 32:20I know.
- 32:20When do we…
- 32:20When have we ever gotten a, a Seahawks show that's, on HBO, that really feels
- 32:26like we have to watch it, I think to-
- 32:28Clinton: today.
- 32:28Yeah.
- 32:28Today was
- 32:29Brandan: the first time
- 32:29Clinton: ever.
- 32:30Brandan: It was, it was the first time ever, so.
- 32:31Clinton: Right.
- 32:31We got four more, so I'm in if you're in.
- 32:33Like, why not?
- 32:34Well, we also got almost 200 people with u- with us live right
- 32:37now, so if you haven't already, hit the like, hit the subscribe.
- 32:40If it's your first time watching the Seahawkers podcast, well, what can we say?
- 32:44Welcome.
- 32:44Welcome to the Flock.
- 32:45Welcome,
- 32:45Brandan: welcome.
- 32:45Get
- 32:46Clinton: in.
- 32:46And thanks to- Subscribe
- 32:47… Brandan: our producers, Ryan911, Michael Knight, for coming in, and thanks to all
- 32:51the little Flockers who joined us in chat.
- 32:53and yeah, we will be back later on talking Seahawks.
- 32:57Clinton: It'll be fun.
- 32:58And hey, you and Adam just put out the Know Your Rivals yesterday with the Rams.
- 33:02Yes.
- 33:02It's two hours.
- 33:04It's a lot of fun.
- 33:05It's a lot of making fun of McVay, and then you guys spin it and talk
- 33:08about the 49ers in the second half.
- 33:10So if y- anybody out there hasn't seen that yet, I enjoyed it all this
- 33:14morning, and it was a lot of fun.
- 33:16So it's just…
- 33:16I love that.
- 33:17It was good stuff, plus you get to make fun of McVay, and who doesn't like that?
- 33:21Who doesn't?
- 33:21Yeah.
- 33:21It's the best.
- 33:22He's the worst.
- 33:22Of
- 33:22Brandan: course.
- 33:23well, and that's the thing.
- 33:24We aren't gonna get to see the Rams until Christmas.
- 33:26Right.
- 33:26So this is really…
- 33:28I mean, we're still gonna be following along our NFC rivals throughout
- 33:32the year, but th- that's probably gonna be the last time you get as
- 33:36much Rams content from us until the week leading up to Christmas Day.
- 33:41Clinton: Correct, and when the Rams are two and three in their first
- 33:43five, and Aaron Donald's like, "Eh, maybe I won't come back," 'cause the
- 33:46team's not really that good, that'll be a delightful, delightful start.
- 33:50But that's five weeks into the season.
- 33:51We got about five more weeks, four more weeks of Hard
- 33:54Knocks, so we'll be back, Bran.
- 33:56This is fun.
- 33:57Brandan: Yep.
- 33:58All right.
- 33:58Thanks again to everybody for tuning in, and I think with that-
- 34:00Clinton: There's only one thing left to say
- 34:02… Brandan: go Hawks.
- 34:03Clinton: Go Hawks.
